Eachyear.theC.A.A.publishesa surveyDEact:Eileen,toaireraDonthe BritishIggister.Thisyearssurvey,relating tonotifiableaccidentsin1975isCAP389, price.1,200,andisworthyofstudyby everyC.F.I.,aswellasanybodyelsewho canlaytheirhandsonacopy.Thefirst thingthatbecomesapparentis,thatofthe 199totalaccidents(excludingballooning andgliding),overhalt-.namely108were roClub,Groupandprivateaircraft,and overthe108,92weretoprivateaircraft. Manyoftheprivateaircraftwereclearly PF.A.types.
Inthesurveyisavarietyofanalysesof thekindofaccidentswhichoccurred.Itis noteworthythat,ofthe108referredto above,toClub,Group,andprivateaircraft.22occurredonlinalapproach;and 31duringthelandingrun.Otheranalyses showthatofthese108,unintentionalspin orstallWasresponsiblefor9;misjudging distancefor18;failingtocompensatefor windconditions21;failuretomaintain flyingspeed14;andtheratherhorrifying numberof17duetoflyingrecklesslyOr carelessly.Afurthercheckthroughthe individualcasesindicatesthat,although someoftheseaccidentsoccurredtopilots withathousandormoreflyinghours.the
majorityhappenedtopilotsofconsiderablylessexperience_
Thereseemtobeanumberoflessonsto belearnedfromthefactsquotedabove. Thefirstisthatitisduringthelinal approachandlandingthatinsufficient (rainingorpracticeshowsupmost dangerously;andtheconclusionwhich followsisthatALLpilots,whateverthey themselvesCOnsidertheirownproficiency tobe,shouldmakcaIcelderLED practicingcircuitsandlandings.andif possible.gettingacompetentpersonto watchandcriticisetheirperformance Thereisnoneedto1CindREAmembersofmorethan one sadcase.Illwhich thesuperbfinalresultofyearsofpatient labourhasbeensmashedtobitsbecause oflackofsuthpractice.
Ofthetwoothermostnumerousitems. failuretocompensateforwindconditions, suggeststhatSomepilotshaveputthemselvesandtheiraircraftinjeopardy, becauseoflackofexperienceModernti cycleaircraft.onwhichmanypilotsarc trained.areverytolerantofcross-wind conditions,uptoapoint,andprovided thattheyarehandledcoriectly.Butthere comesapointwheneventhebesttricycle Willrebeland,whenitdoes,thingscan happensiolentlyandsuddenly.Andfor aninexperiencedpilot.tricycletrainedto expectthesametolerancefromataildragger.isaskingfortrouble.Finally,the numerouscasesofflying,carelesslyor recklessly,callforlitdecomment,andonly fordownrightcondemnation.Pilotswho indulgeinsuchflyingareamenace,not onlytothemselves,buttothewholeP.F.A. movement,andtoprivateflyinggenerally. Eachofushasadutytopursueruthlessly andtocondemnanyonewhocommitsthis sortofoffence.
Toconclude;CAP389reinforces,with facts,theopiniongivenin PopularFlying earlier,andagainhere;namelythatwedo needtolookclosely,eachoneofus,atour flyingproficiency,andthepracticewedo tomaintainit.Andthenewlyformed PILOTAGECOMMEEEEEoftheP.F.A.under theChairmanshipofJohnPothecaryis theretohelpeverybodywhoneedsits advice,guidance,oractivehelp.

OnaneveningattheendofJune,afewnightsbefore Sywell'76,myWifecalledmeinforsupperfromthe garage,where1hadbeenploddingthroughtheseeminglyendlesslistoflittlejobsremainingtobedone. beforemyV.P.Icouldbeconsidered coMplete, when thetelephonerang.Iwaswashingmyhandswhen Sheilahammeredonthecloakroomdoor,"Comeat once.There'ssomeonewantstotalktoyoufrom California".WhenIgotmydrippingbandsonthe phoneavoicesaid."ThisisBudEvansfromLaJolla. CanIcomeoverandseeyouandyourproject?"'It tookmeafewsecondstorealisethatitreallywasTHE BudEvans—EvanstheV.P.--andhewascallingfrom ahotelonlyfivemilesawayandnotfromCalifornia afterall.

Quitesuddenly,andontheveryeveofSywell'76, afterthreeyearsofgestation,007,myveryownV.P.I wasfinishedwiththelastsignatureinthelittlegreen book.1wasseizedwiththewildideathatifIwereto trail007uptoSywellantipresenttheassembled engineeringbrainsoftheP.F.A.withthelittlegreen booktheymightbepreparedtoshortcircuitthepaper workandgivemeapermittoflyunder"A-conditions. sothatIcouldmakemyfirstflightintheplacewhere itallreallystarted.Mikevoicedthestrongestdisapprovalandofcourse,intheevent,heturnedoutto beright.Firstflight,hesaid,shouldbeapproached calmlyanddeliberatelywithtimeforthoughtand.I gathered,inanattitudeofprayer.Flethoughtit
extremelyunlikelythatJohnWalker,ourengineering mentor,wouldaccedetosucharidiculousdemand and,anywaySywell,with it's headyatmosphere.Ws crowdsandconstanttrafficwouldbethewrongplace atthewrongtime.However,withtheendinsight, nothnig.notevenmvinspector'sdisapproval.could determefromtrying.AtthelastStrutmeetingJim WallerhadofferedtolendmeatrailersoIranghim up.FlewashimselfinthethroesofloadinghisLand RoverforthejourneytoSywellbut,yes,Icould comeoverandtakealookatit.
Ihadnotowinghitchonmycar,soIcalledatthe localgarage,whorangroundthesuppliersandeventuallysaidyes,theywouldhaveitreadytofitfirstthing inthemorning.OntoJinisplacewhereIleproduced anenormousflat-beddedtrailerthatheusedforcarting hisbeesaroundandlookedbigenoughtotaketwo V.P.Fs"Right.-saidJim"Let'sgetitovertoyour place.-Wemanhandleditthroughhisorchard. hitchedittothebackofhisLandRoverandaway.All thelooseendssuddenlyseemedtobecomingtogether.
FirstthingontheFridaymorning,Ileftmycarat thegaragetohavethetowhitchfittedanddashed hometostartloading007.Imeasuredupthetrailer and,tomysurprise,foundthatitwasonlyjustlong andwideenoughbymereinches.Ievenhadtomake andfitacradleacrossthetowingarmtotakethetail wheel,inordertogetthemainwheelswellontothe Itar partoftheflatbed.Iwouldhavelikedtohave towedwiththepropellorleadingbuttherewasjustno wayofarrangingthis.ConsequentlyIhadtoballast thefrontendofthetrailerwith230lbs.ofearthinbags togivereasonablepreponderanceofweightonthetow hitch.Onewayandanotheritwashalfpastfourinthe afternoonwhenwefinally-pulledaway,drivingvery carefully.with007ontheback.Afteracoupleofmiles sheseemedtobemovingratheralot,soIstoppedto findthechockshadworkedloose,soIbought apound ofthreeinchnailsataDo-It-Yourselfshopandnailed themdown.AfewmilesfurtheronRonSouch. anotherP.E.A.member,flaggedmedown.Hehad followedusforamileorsoandwasnonetoohappy aboutourlashings.Here-lashedtheloadforusand thenroaredofftogettohisPiperPacerandmakea properarrivalatSywell.Wewentsedatelyonourway. Sheilaremarkinguponhowpleasantitwastotravel alongat30m.p.h.andactuallyseesomethingofthe countryside.
Itwas9.30p.m.whenwedroveintotheaircraftpark atSywelland,judgingbythecrowdwhocameoutto welcomeus,wemusthaveemptiedthebar.Afterfive hoursontheroadallIwantedwasadrink,abathand
abedsowedumpedourloadneartheP.F.A.I3usand leftitforthenight.fnspiteofthefactthattheshades ofnightwerefallingprettyfasttherewasstillalotof activityinthecircuitanditwasnotjustpeoplearrivinglate,butmostlychapswhofoundtruehappiness flyingtheirlittlecreationsandwouldgorightondoing ituntiltheywereforcedoutofthesky.Thisworried meslightly.asIhadhopedtofindaquiettimeinthe eveningortheearlymorning.whenIcouldmakem firstflight.
Afteragoodnight'ssleepIreturnedrefreshedto startoffloadingandrigging007at0830ontheSaturdaymorningandwasimmediatelyswampedby\er welcomeoffersorhelpInanswertomyqueryasto whattimeflyinghadstartedthatmorning,somebod saidthattheywerehardatitat0600hours,whenhe waswokenupbsisomeonenearlycominginthrough thetoporhistent.Thisdidnotauguratallwellfora firstflight,buthavingcomesofar.Icouldonlypress on.Thefirstandmostconstantormyvolunteerswas GrahamPostanceoftheSouthernStrutandthekilted AlistairMackenzie.anotherV.P.builderwasalways aroundwheneverskilledassistancewasrequired.
Alistair,likeme.hadbeenvisitedbyBudEvansand stillcouldnotgetoverit.Betweenuswemanhandled 007offthetrailer.laidoutthewings.stabilatorand strutsandsetaboutrigging.Ihadfoundthatan essentialtoolforliningupthestrutandrootboltsis what,intheshipyards.wcusedtocalladrifta lengthof516thinchroundM.S.bargrounddownto tiinchdiameteratoneend.Withthisandamalletthe
boltsgohomewithaminimumofeffortandbad language.
Itwasatropicallyhotandhumiddayandthesuccessionoffriendlyandinterestedenquirersnecessarilyslowedourprogress.sothatitwas11.00a.m. beforeeverythingwasinplaceanditonlyremained totiehtenupthenutsandcheckonthecontrols.At onetimeffoundmyselflyingonthegroundunderthe fuselage,connectingtheaileroncablestothestickand answeringquestionsfromtwoearnestenquirerslying onthegrassoneithersideorme.AhugeCu.Nim.was buildingup-windfromus,iCsblackhulklitupfrom timetotimebystreaksoflightning.Wecouldnot waitanylongerforourbeerandsowepicketed007. putthecoversonandadjournedtothebar.Wewere halfwayintothefirstpintwhentherewasanalmighty crackofthunderanddowncametherainfnthc ensuingsilenceafemalevoicepipedup"Ellbetit's missedwygarden.-Bythetimewegotbacktowork theparchedgroundhadsoakeduptherainandthe sunwasoutagainhotterthanever.GerryPricehad broughthisVP.I.Esmeralda,sportinganewthree bladedprop.roundtokeepuscompanyandwithhim camealotoftheSouthernStrut.Andwhntanice crowdtheywere.especiallythecharmingPothecary's. Truetohisword.Gerrygavemethecowlingsthat hehadsogenerouslyofferedtomakeforme.They wereabeautifuljobandmydelightwashardly temperedwhenIfoundthatfhadlefttheessentialbits andpiecesforfittingthemathome—andfhad boastedthatIhadenoughtoolsandmaterialsinthc backofthecartobuildanotherV.P.I.Withoutthe cowlingsinplace.itseemedunwisetoattemptafirst flight,asonemightincurcoolingproblems,binf thoughtfmightaswellpersistinattemptingtoshort circuitthepaperwork,andsoIsoughtoutJohn Walker.Hewascharmingbutfirm.Withoutthe formalapplicationforaCertificateofAirworthinesshe couldnotissueapermittoflyunder"A"conditions. andhepointedoutthattobendtheruleswould invalidatemyinsuranceHowever.hetookmeacross totheP.E.A.OfficestandinthetenttoseeirStanley Lauderhadbroughtanyoftheappropriatefornisssith him,inthehopethatwecouldsavesomepostagetime. Alas,Stanleyhadnoformsbutpromisedtodispatch themimmediatelyonhisreturntothe(AliceinShoreham.SomewhatchastenedIreturnedto007andthe streamofenquirersandvisitingfriends.

TheMontgomeryshireGroup.whohadnearlycompletedtheirV.P.I.turnedupinforceandspentalot oftimepeeringroundtheengine.Ihadto20andfind AlanNewnhamanddraghimawayfromhisofficial dutiestoanswertheirquestionswhichwerefartoo technicalforme.MySteinhilberpropellorseemedto arousealotofinterestandIbadtofindChrisLodge who,previouslynotmetinthe'kith,hadobtainedit forme.andintroducehimtomyselfandtheseekers aftertheknowledgethatIwasunabletosatisfy.Mike Vaisey,ofthemostbeautifulLutonMinorcameround andlookedkindlyon007.andJohnDunford,whofor solonghasruntheV.P.Squadron,callecltosee hisgodchildLaurieMansfield.Chairmanofthe
EditorialCommittee,lookedintoassurehimselfthat 007wasfactandnotafigmentoffictionlikeit'snamesake,andtheP.F.A.PresidentAirCdre.Christopher Paulbenignlygaveushisblessing.EricClutton,the designerandbuilderof"Fred",tookonelookatmy ailerongapclosersandshuddered.Hehadhadthe samesystemonasailplaneandfounditfine,untilit blewinsideoutandstalledbothhisailerons,leaving himwithhardlyanycontrolintherollingplane. I had installeditontheverybestauthority,butit'sdefects wereobviouswhenEricpointedthemout,soIripped itoffandsetaboutre-installingtheoriginal Z system whichisfiddlingtofit,butefficientinuse.

OfcourseMikewasright,asalways.Sywellwas quitethewrongplaceforafirstflight,forall the reasonshehadvoicedand,inadditionitwasfartoo hot,sothattheinstrumentindicationswouldbe unreliable,andtohaveafirstapproachandlanding complicatedbytropicalfloatcouldbequiteunnerving. I promisedmyselfthatSywell'77wouldreallybe007's year,whenwecouldflyinperfectlyrelaxedandhave nothingwhatevertodobutfly,andstrollaroundand lookateverythingtobeseen,andfly,andchatto otherbuildersandpilots,andfly,anddrinkshandy's ingoodcompanyandflyandflyandfly.

IntheearlyformativeyearsoftheP.F.A..Billmade hispresencefeltinthesettingupofaflyinggroup,and likesomany,hebelievedthatmanshouldfly,anddid alotbyInsownexampletoshowthatitcouldhedone cheaply.
Coming.ashedidfromanaviationfamily,hewas 10meanaeronauticalengineer,aswellasbeingan accomplishedpilot.Hisinterestinflyingtrainingwas wellknowntoall.Fromtheearliestdays or the P.E.A..hewasalwaysapillarofstrengthwhogave hishelptothosewhoneededit,andsupportedthe aimsoftheP.F.AbyInsknowledgeandgoodnatured displomacy.

The1976Fly-IntookplaceonSunday.IstAugust, inquitetheworstweatherwehadexperiencedfor severalmonths.Theforecastwascloudy,am,some breaksinthecloudintheafternoon,withoccasional sunnyspells,buttherealitywasinfactcloudyallday. strongN.W.windsandsquallyshowers.Wewere. therefore,doublypleasedwiththePilotsandcrewsof the21aircraftfromotherstrutsandclubs,together withthetwoaircraftfromBarton,whodidflyin,alist ofwhichisappendedattheendofthisreport.
Twoaircraftarrived,infact,onSaturday,theday priortoFly-Inday,justtomakesureofbeinghere, BillWoodhamsinhisTipsyNipperfromBickmarsh. andP.CoxinhisDruineD3ITurbulentfromHighwoodHall.TonyYounginhisBeagleHuskyfrom KingwestonSomerset,flewuponSaturdayandstayed overnightwithfriendsinYorkshire.
OnSundaymorning,oneofthefirsttoarrivewas pastN.W.StrutCharimanErnieHorsfallfromBlackpoolinhisJodelAmbassadeur,closelyfollowedby EricCluttonintheubiquitous'Fred'.Fouraircraft arrivedfromHucknall,thelargestgroupfromasingle base,andMikeCurranflewinfromHatfieldinthe Turbi,twoseattandemDruineaircraft.Fly-InControl wassetupintheBartonClubhouse,manned(or shoulditbewomanned?)byMrs.(Ms?)Richardson, wifeofourHon.Sec.whologgedarrivals,issued identificationlabelsandgaveoutfreemealticketsto visitingpilotsofP.F.A.aircraft.
Theweatherwasgettingdistinctlyworseasthe morningprogressed,anditbecameevidentthatthe numberofaircraftarrivalswouldbefewerthanhad beenhopedfor,givengoodweather.Howeveragood spiritprevailedamongstthevisitorsandthewelcoming Strutmembers.ThePubliccarparkwasbeginningto fillupalso,properlyauthorisedaccesstotheClubcar parkandairfieldbeingmonitoredbyagroupofBrian Winstanley'sBlackburnATCcadets.

Thereisasquadronatmosphere,aspatroltime nearsandtheenginesarestartedbythegroundcrews. Theslipstreampullsatourgoggles,aswetake-offand headforourpatrolsector,underahazygreysky.
- Banditsatteno'clock"yellsthepilotashereefsthe TigerMothinasharpleftturn"Where,where?Oh yes,Tseeitnow."WecloseinandInotetheblue registrationlettersofasmartlookingBeagleTerrier. Severalinterceptionslater,welatchontoared Cherokee,thepilotofwhichlooksatriflenervous,as weaccomplishahighquartertogethisdetails.The thirtyminutepatrolseemstohavepassedveryquickly andwearesoonbackdownonthegroundagain,to welcomeourvisitorsandtohandinourresults.
Thesubsequentconsumptionofsandwiches,cakes andteaisfrequentlypunctuatedbylaughter,assmall groupsofclubandvisitingpilotsreplaytheirmanouvreswithdescriptivehandmovements.Thismust
betheultimateinvicariousexistedcewithallthethrills ofanaerialbattleandwithabsolutelynodangerto anyone.
Theonethatgotawayyouareasking?Hewasthe redCherokeewhomusthavebeenonaroutinecross country,passingEinmere—probablythoughtwewere allmad.Wonderifhefiledanairmiss?
OldworkhorsesofthefarNorth
Inacountrywhereweknockoldaeroplanesinto heapsofjunkassoonastheyhavereachedtheendof theirfinanciallyusefullives,itmaycomeasasurprise tomany,thatinotherareasoftheworldoldaircraft arestillatworkafterfortyyearsofservice.Suchan areaisAlaska,thenorthernmostpartoftheUnited States,anareawhereweatherandmountainousterrain haveslowedthedevelopmentofroadsandwhereair communicationformstheprimarylinkbetweenminingandoilworkingcommunitiesandthemainports suchasAnchorage.
Modernaviationhasprovideduswithfourhundred seaterjumbojets,butthesearepatentlyuselesstoa miningsettlementwithathousandfootstrip,onthe sideofamountain,whichissnowcoveredformostof theyear.Aircraftdesignedforthistypeofworkforty yearsagoarestillinharnesstoday,becausenonew designshavebeenforthcomingtosupplantthem.They arenotpretty,theyarenotintheshowroomcondition weareusedtoseeinghistoricaircraftdisplayedinour museumsandvintageairshows.Tothepeoplewho usethem,theyaretakencompletelyforgranted,oil covered,battered,spatless.Buteverydentintheir
Stillinharnessafter,forty-twoyearsofhardwork,thisStinsonSR-5ReliantstillhaulspeopleandfreighttooutlyingcommunitiesinAlaska.NotethcuncowledLycomingR-680-4andlargecargodoor.Thewheel.fairingshavelong sincedisappeared!fuselagefloorcouldtellastory.Themajorityofthese olderaircraftareStinsonRehants.becausetheirperformanceandreliabilityendearedthemtothehighly skilledbushpilots.Thenamewasnoaccidentand Stinsonshadagreatreputationinthefarnorth.One suchaircraftwhichisstillbusynitheAnchoragearea isStinsonReliantSR-5Abuiltin1934.Registered NI3459.itlackstheposhenginecowlingofformer yearsandiscompletelywithoutundercarriagefairings orspats,butitcanstillhaul12001bs.oflumberinand outofawkwardairstrips.Thediversityofitscargois attestedbytheconditionofthewoodencabinfloorboards.Upfrontthepilothasanold-fashionedcontrol wheelmountedonasubstantialyoke,whichalso carriesthethrottleassembly.Moderninstruments havereplacedtheearlierdials,hutthepanelhasnot changedmuchinfortyyearsandradioaidsareconspicuousbytheirabsence.UnliketheIntergullwing StinsonSR-7Rehams,thisSR-5modelhasnoflaps, soitsmanypilotsovertheyearshavehadtoworkthat littleharderatshortlandings.Theundercarriagefairingsandenginecowlingsareneverusedontheseolder workhorsesoftheair.Theirwheelsareexchangedfor floatsorsnowskis,dependingontheworktobedone andthetimeoftheyear.Pilotshavetoservicethe engineduringtransits,socowlingsareusually relegatedLothebackofthehangarandtheresulting smalllossincruisingspeed Is consideredunimportant.
CaptainWRITellDodson,aBoeing737commander ofAlaskaAirlinesknowsalotaboutStinsons.Asa Hy,thistallandgenialAlaskan.helpedhisfatherwith thefamilybushflyingbusiness.In1936theyLook deliveryofabrandnewStinsonSR-8andthisaircraft becamethebackboneoftheir'lyingoperationsforthe nextdecade.Flyingacrossglaciersandsnowbound valleys,theorangeandgreygull-wingmonoplane, registeredNCI6159becameafamiliarvisitortothe isolatedandtinyAlaskancommunitiesItalsogave Warrenhisloveofflying.Herecallsamemorable journeyoverChristmas11:40whenhisfathernewthe wholefamily,includinggrandad.backtoDetroit,for theaircrafttoheoverhauledattheStinsonfactory there.TheroutewasviaWhiteHorseintheYukon, DawsonCreekandGrandRapids,aroundtrip distanceof6,140milesoverruggedmountainous terrain.throughtheseverestweatherconditions imaginable.Certainlyproofoftheamazingskill orthe bushpilotandhisreliableStinson.Warrenrecallsthat hisfatherandtheotherpilotsofDodsonAirwayshad todealwithallsortsofemergencies,andatleasttwo babieswerehorninNCI6159,duringitscolourful workinglife.Themachinewassoldin1946toanother companyandcrashedin1948whileattemptingaland-
ingonahillsideminingcamp.Tooinaccessiblefor repairs.theremainsofthelovelyoldSR-8werebulldozedtoonesideofthemineworkingsandwrittenoff.
NaturallyWarrenDodsonandhisbrotherrememberthoseearlydaysofhelpingtheirDadwithgreat happinessandonecanimaginetheirsurpriseand pleasure.when,onarecentcrosscountryflightin Warren'sPiperCub,theyrediscoveredthewreckageor theirfather'sStinsonneartheoldmineworkings, whereithadcrashed.Theylostnotimeinremoving theremainstoasmallwarehouseinAnchorage,where aninventorywasmadeofallcomponentsthatcould berebuilt.Thefrontendofthefuselagewasacomplete writeMEwiththecomplicatedarrayofsteeltubes hopelesslydistorted.Todate,however,theremainsof anotherSR-8hasbeenobtainedandtheforwardend ofitsfuselagewillbeusedtorebuildNC16159tothe conditionitlefttheStinsonfactoryMDetroitin1936. byClaudeMillingtonSeeingTipsyG-AFVNinhernewliveryatSywell, remindedmeofaflyinglessonwhichwelearnedtogetherinthepast.Duringtheearlypartofthewarin FlyingSchool,Icouldneverquiteunderstandwhat thedevilpersonalhygieneclasshadtodowithflying anaircraft,especiallyastheheroesofthedayalways lookedthescruffiest—longhair,greasycapsetc.After passingout,thefirstthingthebrandnewpilotdidwas togetinsomeserviceattheMessbypouringbeerin hisnewhat,andgreasingupthebattledressby crawlingaroundthehangar.No,whenthehygiene classwasinprogress.Iwastobefoundinthesnooker roomaboveBurtonsthetailors,endeavouringtoearn abobortwo,leavingthecleanonestolearnhowto wash.ftwasnotuntilwellafterthehostilitiesended thatmybeliefsbecamestronger.
Taffwasagoodlad,hehadGuts,thetwotypes.the firstbeingtheRuleBritanniatype,bagsofdetermination—nevergiveinwouldTaff.Theothertype remindedmeoftheSeaCaptainstrollingthedecksof thelugger,onaforceten,whenhenoticedthelandlubberleaningovertherail—"Iseethatyouhavea weakstummickmyman-."Weakstummickbe damnedSir.I'mthrowingitasfarastheothers-.That wasTaff—deadairsick.Ihaveneverseenahuman suffersobadly,anythingtodowithair,hewasaway. Everytimehepassedabarbersshophewouldbelch.
Taff'sothergreatfailingwasthathewashygenic. HewastheonlymanI'veknownthatcouldmakea barofsoaplookdirty.Heusedtoworkatagarageas amechanic,andtoseehintapproachinghisworkplace inthemorning,youwouldthinkthathewasgoingtoa wedding!Hisspannerslookedlikebarsofsilver;the proprietorwentbust,hethoughtthathewasricher thanheturnedouttobe.Hisworkmatesfeltinferior. hemadethemlookliketinkersfromthebush.
IntheearlydaysoftheMontgomeryshireUltra LightFlyingClub,weusedtooperatetheTipsyfrom anairfieldintheSouth,80milesawayfromhome,and itwasherethatTaffjoinedustolearntofly.God shouldnothavedonethistousbyrights.butthereit was,wewerelumbered.Whenwestartedtoopenthe hangardoorstherumblingswerefromTaff,notthe doors.duringthepre-flightcheckTaffwouldmanthe
pumps.Laterwewouldgethimaboardtheaircraft withthehopethathewouldhavenothinglefttopump, butontheapproach,justabouttoholdoff,thewindscreenwouldgoopaquewiththeoddcarrotorpea slidinggentlydowntotherubbergussets.Taffwas cunning—alwayssavedalittleforalloccasionswould Taff.IfeltmanytimesthatIwouldhavetopackhim up,buthewassodertimedtostickitthatIjusthad tostickwithhim.Hewouldcleantheaircraftafterhis tripsocleanthatitlookedasifithadjustbeen deliveredfromthefactory.Thishaditsadvantages, becausebeforetheCofAwasdueyoucouldtakeTaff upforacoupleofspinsthenletTaftaloneforaday onlandingandtheARBwouldstatethatthisisthe cleanestaircraftinBritain.Godhashispointsafter all.
Thesunroseandsetmanytimes,timepassed,the airfieldintheSouthwentbroke.Wehadtomove.As wecouldnotgetestablishednearhome,arrangements weremadetomovetheTipsytoanairfieldintheMidlands,nowalsodefunct.Thedayselectedfortheflight wasbeautiful.Amid-summersdaywithhighpressure, littlepuffsofcloud,bluesky,viz,formiles,outlook thesame.Iawokeearlyandmadeadaftdecision-I 'phonedTaffandaskedifhewouldliketoaccompany meontheflight.Hehadrecentlymadealittleprogress withhisproblem.Rumblingswouldstartafter5 minutes,belching10,butactionstationswouldnotbe soundeduntil60minuteshadbeenreached.Asconditionsweregreat.Ithoughttheexperiencewouldbe ofgreatvalue.Itwas,butnotforTait
Aclubmemberpickedusupanddroveustotheairfield.Tafflookedgreat,shininginthesunlightwith hislittleblackbagcontainingachangeofclothing. Theladwasalwayspreparedfortheworst.Duringthe journeywechattedaboutfishing,shootingandwomen —anythingtokeephismindofaviation.Theroad-trip wassuccessful.Tafflookedpinkandhappy.Checks andnav,completedwetookofffromourrecenthome forthelasttime,withasteady-climbingturntoport wesetcoursefortheMidlands.
Afteraboutthreequartersofanhourflyingwewere approachingtheBlackCountry.Taffwasstillhappy, theTipsywashumming,thesunwashotandI,likea clot,relaxed.Nowperhapsyouknowthatwhenthings happenfast,dangerouslyfast,itappearstothe individualasthoughitishappeninginslowmotionlikeafilm
IrememberoncegoingforarideinaHudson.An aircraftthathadahellofanameforswingingon landing.TheusualthingWOUldhappen.Aswing wouldstart,thendevelop,andtheundercartwould collapse.Thetanks,whichwerebehindtheengines. wouldbesplitbytheundercart.Thefiretendercrew wouldthenhaveaflamerontheirhands,fromwhich veryfewcrewwouldgetout.Thefactsdidtendtoget onealittletwitchy.
Theeventisstillvividinmymemory;wewere approachingtolandatHendon,Iwassittingona spareseatbehindtheradioop.Lookingoutofthe portholeIcouldseethatwewereholdingoff,we touched.Icouldfeelherstartingtoswing,theswing gotvicioustotheleft,thewingstartedtobend.Icould seetherivetspopping,theprop.bentandstopped. Vapourrose,wewererevolvingon.thegrass,thank Godnottherunway.Idivedfortheredhandleonthe door,onemoveandIwasoutandbeingdraggedby thedinghyamongthedaisiesthatImustsaylooked Rood.Theskylarksweresinging,everythingquietand peaceful,exceptforasliehthissingandwhitevapour risingfromthebentwing.Thewholeepisodemust havetakensplitsecondsbuttome,sittingonthegrass, itseemedalifetimesinceIfirstsawtheswingcommence.Thesequeltothiseventwasthatthenextday IwascalledbeforetheWineCo.I/CAirSeaRescue equipment,whoshouldhavebeenpensionedoffwhen Pontiouswasapilot,butwasstillonthepayroll.He accusedmeofdamaeingadinghywhentherewasno needforit.andthreatenedtostopmoneyoutofmy paytoreplaceit.Iexplainedtohimthathisparents werenotmarried,andIthinkthatIwillleaveitat that.

IhaveneverseenamansoFaroutofanaircraftwithoutwearinga'chute.Hewaslyingonthefuselagewith hisarmsoutstretched—hisfingersatthatmomentof timewereabouttwofeetfromtherudderandhewas stillmovingcloser.Myarmsshotoutandlocked aroundhisshins,myrighthandclosedaroundashoe —leftorrightIwasnotsure.Ilookedhack,hehad stoppedslidine,wewerealltogetheragain.Ihad seenwingwalking,butafuselagecrawlwassomething new.SirAlanCobhamwouldhavebeenproudofit. Theloadhavingbeentakenfromtheenginetherevs startedtobuildup.Thegreenpatchbecameagarden theflaeswerewashing—lovelycleanwashingbeing hoistedbyablonde.Shewaslookineup,hereyeswere blue.God,it'stimethatItookmoreaction.Imust lowerthespeed.StickingoutmyleftelbowImanaged toknockbackthethrottle—atleastwewouldnotmake suchabigholeinthelawn.Myrightarmrelaxeda little,fingersstretched,thetipsofsamemanagedto hookaroundthemetalstick.Iappliedalittlebackwardpressure.Thelawnstartedtomovebackwards, theexpressionoftheblondedidnotchange,thecharmingcreaturewentthesamewayasthelawn.The houseappeared,thedownstairswindow,theupstairs window—itneededpainting,thebedwasnotmade-theslates,thenthechimneys,thebluesky,thepuffs ofcloud.Therewasasuddenbump,Taffhadarrived backintohisseat.Myeriprelaxed,withmyrighthand Igavehintanalmightyslapacrosshisface.Hewas lookingintomyeyeswithanexpressionofasmallboy who,afterpassingalittlewind,looksatthevicarat choirpractice.Iyelledathimtogethisstrapson which,whentheaircraftwasonceaeainonaneven keel,wemanagedtodo.AprivateairstripatWalsall appearedbelowus,welanded.Taffcrawledoutand layunderthewing.Istaegeredoutandmademyway tothecanteenforanoldNAFFImueofweaktea.It wasereat.
Thede-briefingofthedisplayafterwardsdisclosed thattheeventswereasfollows:Taffdecidedthathe wantedtomanthepumps,andasweweregoingtoa newbasehewantedtokeephisbestsuit,theaircraft andhimselfclean.ThetinklethatIheardwasTaff withdrawingthepinfronthissafetystraps.Turningto hisriehttodischargethecontentsofhisstomachover theBlackCountry.Atthesametimeheplacedhisleft legatthebottomofthestickforleverageandkicked out.Thestickshottotheinstrumentpanelandthe aircraftcommencedaviscoushunt,diggingthestraps intomeanddischargingTaffintotheslipstream.It wasthenthatinstinctsavedtheday.IfIhadtriedto gettheaircraftoutofthedivefirst,Taffwouldhave goneandthenIwouldhavetotellhisMamthathe hadmadeaholethroughtheroofofWoolworths.
Oh,well,that'showitgoes.Ourlotareastainedand dirtylot,butatleasttheyhavelearnedsincethatday ourmottoorsayingfortheClubis:"Justletitgo.-
ThelasttimeIsawTaff,hewaslikeatrampand smelledlikeone.Apityhestoppedflying,butthe lessonwastoohardforhim.So,donotforeet,Chaps, justletitgo,justletitgo.
BurtRutan'sVari-Eze
Memberswillhavenoticedanannouncementon thenewlygainedapprovalforconstructionofBert Ruttan'sVari-EzeaircraftforthisCountry,which appearedintheNov./DecemberMagazine.Thiswas inthenatureofa'stoppressinsertion,whichiswhyit appearedontheadvertspage(andtheadverts,infact appearedonaninsertedsheet).Wefeltthattheinformationwassoimportantandsoup-to-date,thatitwas ill thenatureofa'scoop'forboththeEditorsand,of course,P.F.A.Engineering.However,forthoseseeking toknowwhattheVari-Ezeisallabout,wecouldnot betteraninformationsheetwhichwasdistributedwith thelastNorthEastStrut'sNewsletter,andwhich,with theirpermission,wenowreprinthere,asfollows.
TheVari-Eze(pronouncedveryeasy)wasdesigned byBurtRutanandisacompletelynewconceptin ultralightaircraftdesign,constructionandperformance.Itisofcanardconfiguration(i.e.tailfirst)with apusherengine.theseatsareintandemandaresteeply reclinedgivingaseatingpositionsimilartoahigh performancesailplane.Thewingsaresweptback18andareof22ft.span,thesurfacesaresmoothwithout ailerons,flaps.etc.,tospoilthecontours.Ateachwing tipthereisaWinglet/Rudderwhichapartfromgiving directionalcontroli-educedthewingtipvorticesand thusthedrag.
Thecanard,anditsdesign.isprobablythemost significentpartoftheaircraft.Aswellascarryinga percentageoftheliftingforceitalsoactsasan elevator,aileronsandflapsThedesignissuchthat thecanardalwaysstallsbeforethemainwingsand thereforetheaircraftwillnotstallorspininthe acceptedsense.Itcanbeflownunderfullcontrol,with fullaftstick,atanypowersetting.Anotherfeatureof thecanardisthatinturbulentconditions,becauseof thedesign,itwilltrytostabihsetheaircraftautomatically.
Theaircrafthastrimcontrolonallthreeaxis,and oncetrimmedoutproperlycanbeflownhandsand feetoffforlongperiods.
Thewingsandcanardareattachedtothefuselage byquick-disconnectfittingsenablingtheaircrafttobe takenhomeonatrailer.
Comparedtotheaveragehomehuiltaircraftinthis countrytheperformanceisspectacular.On100hpit hasamaximumcruisespeedof200mph.andan econonlycruiseof145mph,therangebeing700miles and1100milesrespectively.Thisisatitsmax.gross weightof1050Ibs.—emptyweightis.5301bs.Take-oft
byOliverSmithrunis700ftanditclimbsat1800fpmatmax.all-up weight.Landing,however,isaproblem.Becauseof thepoorvisihilityforwardathighanglesofattackthe landingspeedhastobekeptuptoabout6skts.This, togetherwiththefactitissocleanitdoesn'twantto stopflying,makesBurtRutansaythat[heminimum striplengthshouldhe2400ft.
Themostimportantfeatureforthehomebuilder is themethodandmaterialsofconstruction.Apartfrom theengine.canopy,wheelsandafewbracketsthe wholeaircraftisbuiltfromfoam.glassclothand epoxyresin.Becauseofthisrevolutionarymethodof constructiontheplans,ormorecorrectlytheconstructionmanual,istotallydifferenttowhatone normallyexpects.ILis.infact,verylikcadresspattern withsketches,words,fullsizetemplates.photos,ctc. Eachpart,cg.canard,hasitsownchapterwhichlists allthematerialsandtoolsrequired.andthetimetaken foreachstep.Itreallyisanidot'sguidetoaircraft construction.
Thefoamiscuttoshapeusingahotwirearound templatesforthecanardandwings.andbyknifeand wirebrushforthefuselage.Thesparsarelaidupon thefoamwithglasscloth/epoxyandOnassemblythe wholesurfaceisglassed.Virtuallyallthestructureis intheouterskinwhichmakesinspectionveryeasy. IpurchasedtheaircraftinSept.1974afterseeingit partlyconstructedandstoredatKellerberrin.a countrytownsonie108milesfromhere.ftwasloveat firstsightand,beinganoldie(now59vears)Idecided thatfinishingthiswouldbebetterthanstartingafresh project.Igotthefuselage.mainplane,tailplaneand undercarriageallincompleteplustwoengines,one incompleteandsonteinstrumentsandthreeairscrews allfor1,000dollars.IhadthelottruckedtoPerth,W. Australia.Themainplane.Istoredontheverandah, whichfhadglassedin,andthefuselagestoredinthe garage.Lateritwasfittedwithadummyundercarriage inordertobewheeledoutintothedrivewhenwork wastobedoneonitindaylight.
ThejoboccupiedtwoYearsplusandexceptfora fewweeks'holidayintheU.K.whereIsawtwoother Turbis(andflewone).fdoubtifadaypassedthatI didnotdoatleastanhour'sworkontheproject.
Everyweek-endandallmyholidayswerespentonit. Ibeganbycompletingthetailplane.whichrequired thestabili2ercoveringandhingescompleting.Iguess thejobwasdifficultattimes,despitemylife-longexperienceasaworkshoptechnician.withskillsinall trades.
Thedrawingswereincompleteandsonic40-odd drawingswereultimatelysubmittedandpassedas modificationsbytheDept.ofTransport.Sonic drawingswerenecessaryforalterationsmadetothe throttlecontrols,cowlingsforthe80H.P.Gipsy Minorengine(thishadverylowhoursandwas virtuallynew).Ifittedbrakes.usingHondamotor cyclebrakeshoes.Thebackplatesandfittingswere madeandlikewisethedrums.whichlittedtothebolts holdingthesplithubs.CablestoHondaclutchlevels, thelatterfittedtotherearcontrolcolumn.
Atailwheel\vasfitted,butbecausetherudderhorn wastoohigh,itcouldnotbeusedtocontrolthetail wheelcastering.Instead.Ifittedspringsandasingle stopwhichlimitedthemovement or thewheelto70 degreeseachway.butdidnotallowittopivotaround andwindupthesprings.
ThebatteredGipsyminorcowlwasputtiedupand smoothedtobecomeapatternforafibreglasscowl. Thiscameoutextremelywellandwhenfittedwithan aluminiumstrip,coveredwithurethane,madeaneat fittingfortheupperandsidecowlsofdural.The Dept.requiredastressanalysisoftheenginemount (some30pagesofmaths.)andalotofworkwentinto enginemounts.TheDynaflexmounts,originallyfrom aMothMinorhadperished.fcontactedDunlop Rubberwhokindlysentmeadrawingonhowtomake amouldtore-rubberthese.Thisoccupiedsome14 hoursofmachiningbuttheactualcostofthejobwas surprisinglycheapI.ofcourse,madethemoulds. Aftertrammellingtheenginefrarne,thedistancepieces weremadeandfittedwiththerequiredtaper.New boltsweremadefrom4130steel.Fuellines,flexible andcoveredwithasbestosfiresleeving,werefitted. Anautomotivetachometerwasfittedandthelight flexiblecablewasfoundtocopewithanasty"5bend,beforethecableenteredthefirewall.Iwas advisedtonotworryaboutignitionshieldinguntilit wasprmedtoberequiredTheGipsyminorengineis notliltedwithageneratorand,asakotheradio(an AS.H.360)wasliltedtotherearcockpit.itproved unnecessarytohaveshieldedignition.TheradioI littedtotherearseattoaslotcutintothesideofthe PopularItviig.JanuaBal'ehruary.1977

Completingthewineandcoveringitwasavery satisfyingjob.Theinstrumentpanelisintherearonly andwaschangedseveraltimesbeforeImadeupmy mind.Thetachometerisorrthepanelandonthe coaming.togiveastraightrunforthecable.Theoil pressureandtemparcontheoiliersideforthesame reason.Theignitionswitchbeingalsoonthecoaming. Onlythemainflyinginstrumentsbeingfittedtothe panel.Thefuelgaugeisfittedtothetankcapand consistsofalengthofin.diameterstainlesssteel tubeslottedalongmostofitslength,insidethisis anotherthinnertube(alsostainless)fittedwithacork floatandanarrowlevelindicator.Thetankwas calibratedwiththefuselagelevelandeachgallonis markedbyasemicircularwashersolderedtothein. tube,thetankholds14gallons.
Approachingwinter,Ihadtheaircraftmovedfrom myfrontlawn,whereithadbeenassembled,to Jandakot,oursecondaryairport.TheRoyalAero Clubkindlygavemehangarroomwhereitwas assembledandtheremainingjobscompleted.This tookmuchlongerthanexpected.Ihadtocarrythe requiredtoolsandtravelalongdistanceeachweekend.Thenthedrawingsandstressanalysishadtobe passedandallthepaperworkcompleted.Icarried outfuelflowtests.runningtheenginewithaCarburettorfullafterwarmingitup.thendisconnectingthe fuellinestothecarburettorandcollectingwhatwas deliveredwiththeenginerunning.Thisprovedthat muchmorewasdeliveredthanwouldeverbeused. hadseveralgroundengineerslookitoverand correctedthefaultstheyfound.SuddenlyIhadnothing elsetodoandthepermissiontoflycamejustbeforeI hadcompletedaconversionontoaChipmunk.
IsetthedateforthefollowingSunday,togiveme timeforalastcheckoverandtochargetheHonda motorcyclebattery,whichpoweredtheradio.

Inthelasteditionof PopularFlyingI promisedthat thistimewewouldbringyounewsaboutsomeofour PreservationandRestorationGroups,soweare presentingherethreeprofiles,eachonaGroupthat representsaparticularcross-sectionofactivitiesin thisfield.
Firstly,basedintheLeedsarea,theNorthern AeroplaneWorkshopswasfoundedin1973byJohn Longhorn.withafourfoldobjective,directedtowards thepreservationofouraeronauticalheritage;to perpetuatetheskillsoftheearlydaysofaeronautical engineering,toconstruct,withprofessionaladviceand inspection.airworthyexamplesofoutstandinghistoricaldesigns,tofosterresearchintoallaspectsofearly aviation,especiallyonalocallevelandtoencourage publicinterestinaviationthrougheducation.The Groupwrites:—

"AsearchbeganforasuitableSwallowtorestore orrebuild.Wealsoheardataboutthistime,thata SwallowwaslyingwiththeNorthernAircraftPreservationSocietyatManchester.Wegotintouchwith themtoaskwhetherwecouldcometosomeagreement withaviewtorestoringtheiraircraft.Afterseveral monthsofsetbackshowever,alasthedealfellthrough. ItwasthenimpressedintotheR.A.F.andwasused forevaluationtrialsinglidertowingofvariousconfigurationsatbothThomeandFarnborough.Itwas thendemobbedin1942andremainedinstorageever since.Theworktodateontheaircraftis;allmetalworkhavingbeenstrippedoff,allthefuselageframes havebeenrecleanedandregluedandonesideofthe
fuselagepracticallyreskinned.Theenginehasbeen takenonbyanotherofourstalwartfriendswhoworks atAirworkServicesLtd.,atRhoose.whoisatthe presenttimerestoringthePobjoyenginetoitsformer glory".

EachyeartheAssociationisofferedtheopportunity toparticipateinseverallargeAirDisplays.Thisyear theExecutiveCommitteehavedecidedtoconcentrate onfourmajorevents.

Eachdisplayslotwillbeapproximately20minutes inlengthandwillbesplitintotwosections.Thefirst isFora'star'aeroplanewithacomprehensivecommentarygivingasmanydetailsaspossible.The secondhalfwillconsistofatwocircuitflypastwitha largevarietyofaircraft.Thisschemewastriedlast yearatBigginHill,withDavidBuckleandhis Cavalierinthelimelightanditworkedquitewell.The DisplayCommitteewouldliketoformaregisterof allbuilders,andpilotswhowouldbewillingtobe consideredforoneormoreoftheaboveevents.It mustberememberedthatwewishtoprojectan imageofsafe,funflyingwhichthepubliccanreadily appreciateasbeingwithintheirownpotential.Itis pointlessforustotrytoimitatepolishedaerobatic, orformationdisplays,whicharebetterlefttoprofessionalswiththetimetopractice.
Pilotsjoiningtheregisterwillbesentaquestionaire form,adisplaymapandinformationsheets.Normally participantswillbeprovidedwithfuelforthedisplay andtheflighttoandfromtheaerodrome.Thisis handledontheday,alongwithluncheonvouchers. Wheretheeventissponsored,asmallprizeissometimesgivenbytheorganisersforustoaward.
Inthepastourgroundexhibitionshavesometimes beenadisappointment.ThePFA'smarqueeistobe fittedwithanewpurposebuiltdisplaystand.One sectionwillbeforsalesitemsandmembershipenquiries,withtheremainderopenforaskeletonaircraft.Thecommitteewouldbepleasedtohearof anyone,withanabandonedproject,whichcouldbe transportedaroundfortheseason,oralternatively,a localhome-builtprojectthatcouldbesetup.Another ideaistoprovideaworkbench,wheresomeonecould befinishingoffsomepre-constructedwingribs,which wouldselllikehotcakestohungrysouvenirhunters.

Firstly,therewasthe75thanniversaryofthe foundingoftheRoyalAeroClub.Youmaywonder whatthathastodowithus.butmayalsobesurprised torealisethattheRoyalAeroClubhastakenona differentfacejustrecently,different,thatis,fromthe ClubthatwasinexistenceatthetimeoftheHon.C.S. Rolls,OswaldShortorGeofferydeHavilland.Today, theRoyalAeroClubcomprisesaCouncilofMembers fromalmosteveryaviationinterest.Itrepresentsevery BodyfromAOPAthroughPFAandontoBalloonists. OurrepresentativeonthatCouncilisourChairman, DavidFaulknerBryantanditthereforefollowsthat. whenFIRHThePrinceofWalesattendedtheR.Ae.C. 75thBirthdayevent,PFAwasdulyrepresentedand introducedtoHisRoyalHighness.YourEditorial scribewentalongandcanonlyenthuseatHisRoyal Highness'sinterestandunderstandingoftheaeronauticalscene.Tosaythathisspeechhadus'rolling intheaisles'mightbeoverdoingitabit,butbelieve me,itwasgood.
ThenextmeetingweattendedwastheAOPA PrivatePilotSymposiumattheRoyalAeronautical Society'slecturetheatre.Awholedayoflisteningto expertsfromtheprivatepilotingworld,andverygood valueitwas.TheBLACandnowAOPAholdsthese everyyearandonecannotfailtolearnsomenew informationrelativetogeneralflyingbyprivatepilots. Newthingswegatheredthisyear—fromthelegal pointofview:GroupOwner/Memberswoulddowell totakeoutadditionalpersonalinsurancetoindemnify themselvesagainstoneoftheirpartnersnulifyingthe groupinsurancequiteunintentionally(licencenot fullyuptodate,carryingunauthorisedpassengers. etc.).AnotheritemthatcameupwasthatitisproposedtomodifytheBICrating.Theideaisthata newly-accomplishedPPLcouldcarrystraighton intoaBASIC[MCRATING.withouthavingtowait fortheusual100hrs.tobuildupbeforeIlecan progresstobetterthings.Onthedebitside,itisproposedtoreducetheprivilegeofthePPLPilot,from beingallowedtoflyinginaminimumof1Nmhorizontalvis,toahigherminimumlimitof5kmvis.But, conversely,anyPPLwhoundertakesaBASICIMC (VeryBasic),goesbackto2kmallowableinflight. Yourscribefeltthat,whilstthismayappearanother incursionintotherightsto'flyfree',itwouldbe difficulttoargueagainstitinviewofvariousstatistics thatseemtoprovethatweallkillourselveswithout anyknowledgeofinstrumentflyingatall.
Thiswasfollowedbyacocktailpartyandreception attheRAFClubinPiccadily.whereitisusualto presenttheJohnPlayerAwardforaviation.Ifyou haven'theardofthisbefore,thisisanawardthatis administeredbyAOPA,butisopentoallthosewith aninterestintheUKaviationscene.Lastyearitwent toaVillagePolicemanatMona,ontheIsleofAnglesey,whohadstrivedfortwentyyearstogainaccessto theRAFfieldthereandwhohadrecentlysucceeded, formingaflyingclubsome200strong.Previoustothat, PercyBlamire,anairracingpilotsincethe1950's receivedthetrophy,andbeforethat,JamesBlack, thenBritishAerobaticChampion,frememberbeing handedtheJohnPlayeraward.Thisyear,wewere particularlyinterested,wonderingwhetherthePFA mighthaveashareintheTrophy—butno,orisityes?
Itwenttonootherthan-Ash"Ashburner,theair
trafficcontrolleratourownbelovedSywellairfield. 'Ash'wasintheRFCin1917andsurvivedtomanthe airtrafficcontrolatSywell,ashehadthroughthe years,toseeeverylastairbornevisitorintoPFA International,atSywellin1976.Whatarecord throughtheyears!WhocandobetterthanRFC1917 andstillbeinserviceinPFA1976!Asaluteto'Ash' fromallflyingmembersofthePFA.
Anothermeetingweattendedwas,ofcourse,the PFANationalCouncilMeetingattheRAFMuseum atHendon.Letmesaystraightaway,themeetingwas intheboardroomoftheMuseum,weweren'tallowed toactuallyhaveameetingintheLane,theWimpyor theBeau.Mindyou.Idon'tthinkwe'dhavegotmuch done,hadthatbeenthecase.JohnWalkerwas eventuallyprisedoutofanexhibittochairthemeeting, whichgraduallyincreasedinsizeasotherPEA delegateswereremovedbytheCuratorsandseton courseforourmeetingplace.OurPresident.Air CommodoreG.J.C.Paul,hadseenfittosenda rallyingcalltoallourStrutsandGroups,toputina fullattendance.Theydid—hedidn't.Sadtosay,on thedueday,ourPresidentwaslaidlowwithoneof thoseusualwinter'flubugsandhewasonlyableto sendwordsofencouragement.Somewhere,justsomewhere,theremustbeoneofthoseLatinquotationsto fitthecase!Sadly,weEditorscan'thaveattendedthe rightschooltoquoteoneathim!(politely,ofcourse).
Themeetinghadrepresentationfrom17Strutsand onegroup,andwasalsoattendedbyamajorityofthe ExecutiveCommittee.Inoneofthemostconstructive meetingsoftheNationalCouncilyetheld,onebig pointdidemerge.ThiswasapointbyStanleyWard, freelanceflyingInstructor.exRAFandinvolvedwith theMacCauleyGroup,thattherewaslikelytobea reductionofservicesabletobeofferedby'parttime' trainingschools,followingarecommendationbythe AOPAflyingtrainingadvisorsthatalltraining organisationsberegistered.Thisthenfollowsthat even'privategroup'typeflyingtrainingorganisations (FTO's)havetohavethesamefacilitiesasthecommerciallyorientatedschools.Thismeanssomany squarefeetfortheCFI'sOffice,certaincubicfootage forlecturerooms,andaboveall,yourinstructor-must haveunderhisarm,somanycopiesof'airpilot'and similarpublications,thattheaircraftwillnever take-off,unlessheabandonssomeofit.
Nevertheless,notwithstandingthewholeofthe foregoing,thePFAarestillinbeing,stillreadytogo intothecomingyear,knowingthat,asneverbefore, wearebeginningtohaveavoice,notjustasamateur constructors,butasresponsiblepeopleintheflying community,representedbyknowledgableandresponsiblerepresentativesatthehighestlevelof aviationinthiscountry.
IntheNovember/Decemberissueofthe'Magazine', wepublishedanarticleontheLightPlaneTrials. otherwiseknownastheP.F.A.DesignCompetition. onpages12/13.Weneglectedtotellyou,however,that thearticlewaswrittenbyJohnPothecary,whoisalso theguidinghandbehindthecompetition.Johnhas askedustopointoutacoupleofmistakesinhis article:TheEnglishElectricWrenwon,backinthe 20's.at80milesperGALLON,nothour,andthetime forerectionofanaircraftafterroadtransportshould readFIFTEENminutes.Fromallofwhich,youmay gather.JohnisnotatallpleasedwiththeEditorsat themoment!
Wearestillbackwiththe'What'sinanamecompetition'whichwelaunchedlastSummer.Withan interestthatwehadnotexpectedtoseestirredup,we hadnolessthan88suggestionsputforward,almosta thirdoftheseontheclosingdayforentries.However, theJudges,whoaretheP.F.A.Trophiesandawards Sub-Committee.decidedthat,greatthoughthe
interesthadbeen,therejustmustbesomesuitable generictermsomewhere,whichhadnotbeensuggested yet.Theyfeltthat,withalltheinierestpresently shown,someonemustsooncomeupwithsomething REALLYacceptableand,therefore,withyour indulgence,askedustokeepthecompetitionopen untilthenextInternationalRallyatSywell.Sorryto havetopostponetheprizegivingonceagain,butthat istheirdecision.However,theprizeforthewinning namestandsat£25fronttheEditors,soperhapssomeonewouldliketoaddtoit,justtocreatealittlemore stimulus?
