TheContinental65h.p.to100h.p.enginesseemto havebeenwithusaslongaswecanremember— good,solid,reliableenginesthatwetendtofitand forgetapartfromcheckingtheoiltanklevelandthe sparkplugs.

Butisyourenginereallyuptodate?–Haveyou checkedthroughtheRolls-Royce/T.C.M.Service Bulletinslately,orever?Itissurprisingthenumber thatarestillbeingissuedfortheseengineswhich poweragreatproportionoftheP.F.A.aircraft.

Nowthattheoverhaullifecanbeextendedfrom 1800hoursto2160hours(subjecttomeetingthe requirementsofAirworthinessNotice35),itiseven moreimportanttomakesurethatyourengineiskept uptoscratch.Pleaserememberthatthelifeextension doesnotapplyiftheenginedoesnotincludelatest modificationsandServiceBulletinsoriftheengine lifesincenew,overhaulortopoverhaulisinexcessof tenyears.

Thefollowingchecksshouldalreadyhavebeen carriedoutonyourengine.Ifnot,theyshouldbe donerightawayandrecordedintheenginelogbook.

R.R. Service BulletinT.171(0-200only)

ThisaffectssomeR.R.builtenginesandalsoU.S. builtenginesfittedwithR.R.manufacturedcylinders (assemblyNo.A50222).

Checkthemarkingstampedintotheraisedbosson thecylinderheadontheoppositesidetotheinletand exhaustports.Ifitcarriestheletters`MT alone (not MTXoranyothercombinationofletters),thenthis isoneoftheaffectedcylinders.

Inspectionsshouldbemaderegularlyfor discolourationorslightoilseepagebetweenthe5th and6thcoolingfinsfromthebarrel/headjunction. Ifthisisevident,thecylindershouldbechanged immediatelyastheheadhascrackedfromthebaseof thethreadwhereitscrewsontothebarrel.Later cylindershaveamodifiedthreadformwhichisnot susceptibletocrackformation.

Crackingofthe'MT'cylindersismostlikelyto resultfromrapidheatingandcoolingoftheengine suchasexperiencedduringglidertowing,parachute droppingetc.whichinvolvehighpowerclimbs followedbyrapiddescent.Alwaystrytoavoidany rapidchangesincylinderheadtemperatureonany

byDonCashmore

engine.Acylinderheadtemperaturegaugeisavery usefulinstrument.

Ontheaffectedengines,therecanbelossofdrive totheoilpump(andtachometerduetoexcessive wearinthesquaredriveonoilpumpgears22354/RR or23403/RRfromthecamshaftinput.Hencelossof oilpressure.Thisbulletinisdeclaredmandatoryby C.A.A.Checkallaffectedenginesasfollows:

Inflight. Ifduringflight,r.p.m.indicationis lost,donotassumethatthetachometerisat fault,butensurethatoilpressureisstillbeing maintained.

Groundchecks. Achecktobecarriedouton theoilpumpgearbacklashnotlaterthanthe next25hourinspection,whichwillindicatethe amountofwearthathastakenplaceonthe squaredriveoftheoilpumpgear.

Thecheckcanbecarriedoutbyremovingthe tachometerflex.driveandmakingupapointeras shownintheillustrationandinsertingitinthedrive suchthatitispointingupward.Thedegreeplate(also shown)isheldinpositionwiththeslotoverthe needle.

Holdingtheplatefirmly,turnthepointereachway andmeasurethetotalmovementtorecordthe backlash.Recordthefigureinthelogbook. Dependingonthemovement,carryoutfurther checksasshownbelow:

Thisconcernsthebushingonthedriveendofthe magnetoshaftandwhichfitsinsidethemagneto gear.Itissituatedimmediatelybehindtheretaining nutandwasherattheendoftheshaft.

Theoriginalbushingsaremadeofsinterediron andtheflangecanbreakawaycausinglossofthe gear.Thesebushesaredarkgreyincolour.The replacementbushismadeofmachinedsteelandhas anundercutbehindtheflange.

Onthe4cylinderengineswithS4LN-21,S4RN-21, S4LN-200,S4RN-200,S4LN-1208&S4LN-I227or S4RN-1227magnetos[henewbushingis Pt.No.10163049.

Removethemagneto,thenitssplitpin,nut, washerandbushing.Fitthenewbushing,torque tightenthenutto15-20lb.ft.,thenfitanewsplitpin.

engagingwithserrationsonthebossofthethrottle leverstopwhichisrivettedtotheshaft.

Theobjectofthenoticeistowirelockthethrottle levertothethrottlestoptopreventthelevercoming offtheshaftintheeventoftheclampingdevicenot beingeffective.

Sincethenoticecontainsseveralillustrationsandis fairlylengthyitisrecommendedthatyouobtaina copy.

Thereareotherthingswhichyoushouldknow aboutifyouaretogetthebestoutofyourengine, mostofwhicharecontainedinServiceBulletins.

OilSystem

Youcannowextendtheoilchangeperiodfrom25 to50hours(A.R.SBT.240).

Ifyouarefortunateenoughtohaveaneworzero timeoverhauledengineitisrecommendedtorunfor thefirst20-30hoursonastraight,nondetergentoil. Thiswillallowthepistonringstobedinmore quickly.Theoilshouldthenbedrainedoffandthe tankreplenishedwiththeappropriatedetergentoil.

Nospecialrunninginprocedureisrequired,just avoidunnecessarygroundruns,excepttocheckfor oilleaksetc.,thentake-offandsetuptocruise power,monitoringtheoilpressureandtemperature aswellascylinderheadtemperature.

TheContinentalshouldbeacleanengineasfaras oilleaksareconcerned,theonlytwoleaksources whicharebeyondnormalprocedureforcuringare thepushrodtubesandcrankshaftfrontoilseal.

Thepushrodscanleakattheinboardendpastthe rubbersleevewhichcanmeanreplacingthesleeve,if perished,orslidingthesleevebackandapplying somenonhardeningcompoundsuchasHylomar. Leakscanoccuratthecylinderheadwherethetubeis swagedintothehead.Theonlywaytocurethisisto remove[herockercover,rockershaft,thenthe appropriaterockerandpushrod.Itisthenpossible toinsertaswagingtool.Tapereddriftsarenot usuallysuccessfulandapropertoolshouldbeused (WicksteedE10-11fromBuck&Hickman).

Leakscanoccurfromthecrankshaftfrontoilseal. Thiscanbereplacedeasilyonengineswith removablepropellerhubs.Onflangedcrankshafts, thesealissplitandcanbeextractedwithasuitable hookshapedtool.Thenewsealshouldbefittedafter cleaningthesealhousingandshaft.Sealingcompoundshouldbeappliedcarefullytothesealhousing beforefittingthenewseal—don'tforgetthegarter springortooiltheseallipwhichmateswiththe crankshaft,otherwiseyouwillsoonhavetofitanew seal.

Starter(DelcoRemy)

Troublesareusuallyconfinedtotheclutchand pinionassembly.Thiseitherfailstodriveduetoa slippingclutchorthepinionfractureswithpossibly secondarydamagetotheothergears,generatorshaft oreventherearcovercasing.

Itispossibletosalvagetheclutch,thussavingthe costofanewonewhichisnowabout£20.Thebest waytoavoiddamagingtheclutchistopreventthe enginekickingbackbymakingsurethatthemagneto timingiscorrect.

Brokenpinionsareusuallycausedbycrash engagementwitharunningengineorincorrect meshingduetotheadjustmentonthestartermotor levernotensuringthatsufficientengagementofthe gearsisachievedbeforethemotorisenergised.There shouldbe9/16"traveloftheclutchspindlewhen the leverclosesthatstartercontacts.Withthestarterpull released,theremustalsobe1/16'clearancebetween theleverandstarterclutchspindle(R.R.S.B.T.052, T.035).

Ignition

Correctignitiontimingisessential.Iftoofar advanceditcanleadtostartergeardamageandalso torapidwearoftheupperpistonringsandgrooves, quiteapartfromcatastrophicdamagedueto detonation.

Noattemptshouldbemadetoadjustthecontact breakergap.Thisissetduringassemblyofthe magnetoandaffectsitsinternaltiming.

Timingmarksareprovidedonthebackofthe propellershaftflangeandshouldbeusedin conjunctionwithapointerlinedupwiththe crankcasesplitline(underneathwhentimingtoNo.1 cylinder).

Openingofthemagnetocontactsshould preferablybecheckedusingasuitable'buzzerbox' unlessaccessissogoodthatyoucandisconnectthe coilleadfromthecontactbreakertoenablealamp andbatterytobeused.Analternativeistoinserta verythinfeelergaugeorpieceofpolythenebetween thecontactsandexertaslightpullsuchthatitis releasedwhenthecontactsopen.

I.Difficultyinstarting.

Noticeablelossofpowerandsluggishthrottle responseinflight.

Roughrunningandspittingbackthrough inductionsystem.

T.255describeshowtocarryoutcheckswitha differentialpressuretesterwhichwillshowup leakagepastthepistonringsandvalveseats.

Ifthisequipmentisnotavailable,atyrepressure gaugetypeoftestercouldbeused,orapressure gaugewithanon-returnvalvefittedinthelineto retainthepressurereadingafterithasreachedits maximum.Handturningoftheenginebefore startingupisagoodpracticeandalsoenablesyouto detectanychangeincylindercompressionwhich shouldthenbeinvestigated.

CarburettorHotMrBoxes

Thesearenotoriousfortherapidrateofwearof thevalvespindlebushes.Itispossibletorepairthese withdifficulty.However,arepairkit(Pt.No. 641689)isavailabletorepairtheoldstyleofbox(Pt. No.628122).ThekitisnotsuitablefortheR.R. manufacturedboxes(Pt.No.628122/RR).

Anewairbox(Pt.No.641534)isavailableandhas teflonbusheswhichcanbereplacedeasilyinafew minutes.

TheP.F.A.DesignCompetitionSub-committee heldameetingon1stOctober,1977,todiscussthe programmeforthecompetition,andanyother instructionswhichitwasthoughtmightbehelpfulto competitionentrants.Theydecidedtowritetoeach entrantasfollows:

2.TheDesignSub-Committeeagreedontwo furtheradditionstotherulesasdescribedabove,and oneamendmentwhichareasfollows:

(i)Thepurposeofthecompetitionistoencourage newdesigns.Accordingly,thecompetitionis notopentoanyaircraftofadesignwhichha flownbefore1stJuly,1976.(Thisdatebeing

thatonwhichtheruleswerefirstformulated.) ThecompetitionisopenonlytoNationalsof EuropeanEconomicCommunityCountries (EEC),whoarefullypaidupmembersofthe P.F.A.fromthetimeofmakingtheirentry untilthetimeoffinaljudgingoftheentries. Failuretoremainamemberingoodstanding willdisqualifytheentrant.

Therequirementtoseeconstructionaldrawings andperformancecalculationsatSywellin1978 isaltered,andthefollowingrequirement substituted:TheDesignSub-Committeerequire intheirhands,notlaterthan1stApril,1978, drawingsorsketchesoftheproposedaircraft, accompaniedbysufficientdetailtosatisfythem thattheproposalmeetstherequirementsofthe competitionasdescribedabove,andinthe relevantpagesof PopularFlying quotedabove. Thisrequirementisinadditiontoanything whichmayhavebeenpresentedtotheSubCommitteeMembersatSywellin1977.

TheDesignSub-Committeealsodecidedtoinvite theviewsofentrantsforthecompetitiononthe proposeddateoffinaljudgingofthecompleted aircraft.ThisisatpresentintendedforSywell1979. Itwassuggestedthatthisdatemightbetooearly.We wouldthereforelikeyourviewsbyreturnofpost, whenthedatewillbere-consideredinthelightof yourcomments.

HangarTales

Thelongevityandversatilityofordinarywoodis incredible.Thattimber,whichoncereverberatedto theclamouroftheFirstWorldWarshouldstillbein usetodayisamarkofitsstayingpower.More surprisingthen,isits(sometimes)lowcost,for VintageAircraftClubMemberColinMason purchasedallofthetimbertobuildthewallsofhis hangarforonlyfivepounds!Thewoodpanelshad allbeenoriginallypartofR.F.C.BarrackHutsin 1917,andnowseasonedbymanysummers,they formthesidesofasturdyfortyfivefootspanhangar builtonthesouthsideoftheairstriponColin'sfarm atMarsh,nearAylesburyinBuckinghamshire.The hangar,liketherestoftheairfieldisatributeto ColinMason'shardworkanddedicationtoflying.It hasbeencreatedfromoldscaffoldingpipes, telephonepoles,coldstoragepanelsandthosetimber panelsandonlyaresourcefulfarmersuchasCohn couldhaveproducedsuchamasterpiece.

Thefirstproblemofalargehangaristhewideroof span.Thiswastackledbyweldingthesteelscaffold tubingintoneat45ft.warrentrussspansand mountingthemuponthesturdyex-telephonepole uprights.Aflatandgentlyslopingroofofgalvanised steelsheetswasthenriveteduponthebroadsteel trussestoformarigidandweather-proofstructure, capableofwithstandingthestrongestgales.The verticalwallsofthehangarwerebuiltofthetimber panelsfromtheFirstWorldWar,givingthebuilding apleasinggreyishcolourwhenviewedfroma distance.Alowbrickwallsurrounduponwhich thesepanelsrestwasconstructedbythepublicanof Cohn'slocal,whoasanamateurbricklayergavea helpinghandwiththework.

Ingenuitywastaxedwhenitcametotheproblem ofthehangardoors.Thesolutionwasprovidedby

CliffLockyerwhoisCohn'sflyingpartner.Cliffwas abletoobtainsomediscardedcoldstoragepanels. Rigidandmadeoflightsheetsteel,thesewereofthe rightheightandconvenientlylinkedtogethertoform aclassicconcertinastylesetofhangardoors providingasecureshelterforthesilverandblue BeagleTerrierG-ASDLownedbyColinandCliff.

Thetotalcostofthehangarwas£500butmostof thiswenttopayforthelargeconcretefloorareaand apronhardstand.Whenonegazesacrosstheneatly mown1500ft.grassrunwayatthenewhangarone hastoagreethatCohnMasonhas,bydintofhard work,achievedapilot'sparadiseatMarshFarm.

Therewasatimewhenaircraftregistrationswere handedoutinstrictsequenceandweallknewwhere wewere.AVintageBuffcouldalmostguessthedate ofanaircraft'sfirstflightbyitsregistration letters...Butnolonger.ItseemsthattheC.A.A. initswisdomwilldispenseanyregistrationlettersat thewhimoftheowner,thusbreakingacherished tradition.

Still,whynottakeadvantageofthesituation? Hereareafewsuggestionsforfutureownersto consider.Forthefellowwhowillusehisplanetotake hissecretaryonlongweekendsthereis G-ROPE. The aircraftpolisheduptowinconcourseventswilluse G-LEAM. Anddon'tforgetthemachinewiththe Welshauto-pilot G-Y-ROS, itusedtobeflownby ourfavouriteuncle,buttheylethimputthenational `G'inthemiddleanditisnowregistered RO-G-ER.

HazyOctobersunshinewarmedthegentlehilltop atWalkeridgeFarm,Hammington,whereCliff LovellandBatCooperhavetheirhangarworkshop. Onthegrassadjacenttothchangarstoodan immaculateDH80APussMoththathadjustbeen overhauledandrecovered.Astockyfigure,puffing awayatapipewasmethodicallymakingapreflight inspectionofthisbeautifullypolishedblackand silvermonoplane.RogerBailey,thenewownerofGABLS,wascarefullypreparingtheaircraftforitsC ofA.testflight.

Roger,byprofessionanAirlineTrainingCaptain, boughtthePussMothin1976fromJeremyMenzies andcommissionedCliffLovelltocarryoutthe necessaryrecovering.work.Originallybuiltin1931 arStagLane,theaircraftwasownedformanyyears byMr.GandarDowerandoperatedatDyceAirport aspartofhisairlinefleetthere.Noexpensehasbeen sparedtoobtainthehighlypolishedfinish.With blackfuselage,silverwingsandgleamingmetal fittingsoneisremindedoftheopulenceofaRolls Roycemotorcarinafancywestendshowroom. Rogerhimselfhasspentmanyhourscuttingbackthe cellulosefinishontheIrishlinencoveredfuselage givingitamirrorlikefinishandthebrightlybuffed stainlesssteelexhauststackalonewillmakethis machineveryhardtobeatatanyfuturevintage concoursevent.Poweredbya130h.p.GipsyMajor lcengine,thePussMothhasausefulcruisingspeed of110m.p.h.whichmadeitafavouritewiththe aviationrecordbreakersoftheearlythirties.Indeed, itwasinPussMothG-ABXYin1932thatJim Mollisoncarriedoutthefirstnon-stopNorth Atlanticcrossingthehardway,i.e.EasttoWest.

TheaircraftwillbebasedatRogerBailey'sairstrip atHeathfield,EastSussexonwhichhehasbuilthis ownhangartohouseagrowingcollectionofVintage Aircraft.Maywesayhowmuchwelookforwardto seeingRogerflyinghisbeautifulD.H.PussMoth duringthecomingflyingseasons.

NotthatIwasreallyalayabout,Iusedtodoafair bitofcycletouringbutthatwasaweekendpastime.I alsothoughtthatIwasgoodenoughtohaveplayed tennisatWimbledon,butonly1thoughtso;yousee I'vealwaysaimedhigh.Thetimewasaround5.15 p.m.andalmostdusk,soarmedwithfivebobI jumpedonmybikeandpedalledlikeh...tothe ModelShopandarrivedjustintime.

Thiswasthebeginningofmyinvolvementwith aeroplanesandfromthenonmymumcussedmydad becausetherewerebitsofbalsawood,sanding powder,glueanddelicateframeworkleftlyingall overthehouse.

Thefirstcoupleofmodels1madeweresupposed tobeflyingmodelsbutIwoundtheelasticuptoo muchononeofthemandsuddenlythetailunit becameintegralwiththenose.1becamedisillusioned withflyingmodelsafteratimeontwocounts: theyneverseemedtoflyand theydidn'tlooklikerealaeroplanes,soItried the'solids'inI/72ndscale.

Funnything...themodelsweresmallerbutthe messwasbigger.

EventuallyIwentbacktoflyingmodelsand graduatedtothemodeldieselengine,aMills.75 whichfounditswayintoquiteafewmachinesbut theonewhichgavememostpleasureandbestflights wascalled'PushyCat'.Therewasasongaroundat thattimecalled"ItautItawapuddytat"—nodoubt therewassomeconnection.

Ialsobecamequiteproficientatplanespotting withthehelpofsomeexR.A.F.silhouettecardsand myObserversBookofAircraftandseemedtoknow alltheaircraftattheAirShowsatthattime.

TimemarchesonandsotoworkasanApprentice Engineer.ThoushaltgotoTECH.forthreenightsa weeksayethmySupervisor,whichreallyputthe mockersonmybuildingtime.

Whenstartinginanewenvironmentitissurprising howonetakesonotherpastimes.BuildingAustin andFordSpecialswasthe'inthing'then,sotrueto formItooktobuildingonebasedontheAustin7. Sufficetosaythatittookmuchlongertocomplete thananticipatedandtheaeroplanestookabackseat (ofasportscar)forsometime.

Thenextbigeventarrivedthroughthepostinan envelopemarked0.FI.M.S.Backintheolddays therewassomethingknownasNationalServiceandI hadtoreportforamedicalandinterview.

Ihadmanagedtogetdefermentsforacoupleof yearsandalthoughIdidn'twanttogoinIthought thatperhapsitwouldbealrightintheR.A.F.

Medical—A.1,goodIthought,that'saircrew grade.IhadtoseetheNavymanfirst."Signonfor9 yearsonlydon'twantanyN.S.menreally."GoodI thoughtIdon'tfancybeingsea-sickallthewhile anyway.SawtheR.A.F.mannext,nowher'smy chanceIthought."GradeA.1eh,pity,wedon't needanyhealthyonesthisintake,unlessyouwould liketosignonfor9yearsasamalenurseorinthe R.A.E.Regiment.Getstuffedwasapopularsaying atthetimeIremember.

SixmonthslaterIwasinthebloodyInfantry.

Asithappened1gotmoreflyinginthanmostof myfriendswhodidgetintheR.A.F.Iflewin Beverleys,Brittanias,Sycamores,Whirlwinds, Wessex,andforawholeweekatFarnboroughin 1961intheWestlandBelvedere,onlyasapassenger ofcourse.

Onexercisewhenplayingatsoldiers;wehad enemyaircraft(eitherSeaVenomsorVixens,Idon't rememberwhichexactly),andfriendlyaircraft (Hunters)participating.AtlastIcouldusemy aircraftrecognitionknowledgetogoodeffect.We hadbeenonthemoveforabout4hoursandhalfway acrossSalisburyPlainasweweremarchingindouble fileIspottedaloneVenom(orVixen).Ishouted "enemyaircraft"andimmediatelyranoutofthe columnastheplanedivedtowardsusinastraffing run.Tomyamazementtherestofthemjustkept walkingonandwavedattheaircraftasitwentpast twoorthreetimes.Somuchformyaircraftspotting talents.

Returningtocivilianlifefrom£310s.Od.perweekto somethinglikeft8Os.Od.perweekandwithawife alsoearningIdidn'tknowwhattodowithallthe money.CouldIreallyaffordflyinglessonsatlast! YesIcould,soIdidforaboutthreeyearsuntilour daughterarrived.

EveryonerememberstheirfirstsolobutI remembermineforadifferentreasontomost people.ItwasaNovemberafternoonandgettinglate inthedaywhenmyInstructorhadtakenmeona coupleofcheckcircuitsandsaid—"O.K.offyougo, onecircuitonlyandpickmeup here." OffIwent happyasabird,didaperfectcircuitbutbygollyit gotdarkquickly,theyswitchedtherunwaylightson whenIwasdownwindeventhoughIwasusingthe grass.

Tocompletemyperfectcircuitaperfectthree pointlandingandafterclearingtotheleftIthoughtI mustpickuptheInstructor,butitwassodarkI couldn'tseehimsoIturnedtheaircraftthrough360° butstillcouldn'tseehimanywhere.Iwaitedforwhat seemedlikeagesandfinallythoughthemusthave changedhismindandwalkedbacktotheClub House.

SooffIwent(likeBobNewhart'sbusdriver)taxiingtheAusterbacktotheClubhouse.Halfanhour lateraverytiredandirateChiefFlyingInstructor toreastripoffmeformakinghimwalkbackovera mileacrosstheairfield.

Acoupleofyearslatermywifepresentedmewith adaughter,thatwasallverynicebutitputanendto myflyingsoItookupaeromodellingagain.

InanefforttogetbackintotheairIstartedto buildagyro-glider.ApartfromthenosewheelIdid getasfarasacompletedrollingchassisbutIdidn't fancymakingmyownrotorsandflighttestedones weremuchtooexpensivesoonceagainthingscame toafullstop.

Ibecameinterestedinsailingandwassurprisedto findhowmuchcommontheorytherewasbetween sailingandflying.Theactionofthewindoverthe sailsispreciselythesameastheairoverthewingof anaircraft;itcreateslift.Thereisthe'slot'created

Theirpresencehaspassedalmostwithoutcomment, astheymaketheirunobtrusivewayintoaviation backwaters.PracticallytheonlyoneseenintheUK isthenowbeautifulG-AJPI,newlydisplayedby LeisureSportaftermanyyears,Ibelieve,asthe Girls'VentureCorps'pride&joy.Irememberit beingadvertisedformanymonthsbyShackleton'sin Flight anditjustWOULDNOTmove!

TheArguswasusedextensivelythroughout Europeasanair-taxiandmostofthosesupplied fromtheUSAcamethroughtheUKinthemid-war. SomewentontoIndiaandflewalongsidetheAuster thereasanArmyco-optype.Mostofthesurvivors wereleftinGermanywhenhostilitiesceasedand bothradialandin-lineexamplescouldbeseenfor someyears.ArecentRANGERexampleenteringthe UKisG-BCBL,seenbymanyatShawDene, NewburyaftersalefromBelgium.Attimeofwriting, itisnowalmostrestoredatnearbyKingsclere.

SowhatwastheArgusallabout?Iwasvery fortunatetohaveafreehandwithaWestGerman Argus,D-EKAS,fittedwiththeWarnerradialmotor andthiswasoneofthreerescuedbythewell-known KZ&VeteranflyKlubbenofDenmark.'ASwasthe onlyflyingoneofthetrioatthetimeandgavean appearanceofsolidarity.Ithadsuchfeaturesas wind-upwindows,andwellpaddedcabin,very Americanandquitecosy.Sittinginthepilot'sseat givestheideaofsteppingintoanentirelynewclassof aeroplane.VisionsofStearmansand1-farvardscome tomind,mostlybecauseyouaresittingsomuch

higherthaninthemoreusuallightaeroplanes.There isalotofspaceinthecabin,whichiswelllaidout andhassolidcontrolsrightwheretheycanbe reachedbest.

OurAr0LISwasthe165h.p.variant,butthereisa 185one,givingaddedperformance.Onecantrace Americandevelopmentdownthroughtheyears,as theArgushastoebrakes,justliketheCessnaanda many-turntrimintheroof,fortheelevators.found inmanyPipertypessince.

Therewasnothingmagicaboutstarlingtheengine. Allradialsrequirecaretoturnthepropellorfirstto avoidhydrauliclocksandconsequentdamage,but primingwasveryeasyviathepumpandtheignition setalittleretarded,thenweweresuckedinandready togo.TheArguswasdemonstratedbyMr.Vagn. Stevnhoved,fromGrenaa,theonlypilotaroundwith anyexperienceontype.InDenmark,theLaw requiresthateverynewtypemustbedemonstrated byanexperiencedpilotwhoexaminesthecandidate andsignshislicencetothateffect.

deeprumbleoftheradial,quitedifferenttothe modern172swefly.TheWarnerisnotahighRPM motorandforallitsagedoesnotconsumealotof oil,orthrowmuchOul.Thechecksarequite standardandlimitationsplacardedforalltosee.The visionforwardisquitegood,despitethebigcurved nose,mostlyduetoahighseatingpositionandample windowstowardstheside.Whatyoudon'tseeis aboveorbehind.

Thetailwheeldoesnotlock,whichmakesforan interestingride.TheArgusisabulkyaeroplane,not verylonganditswingsratherreadily.Againstthis, theundercarriageiswideandsteady,whichdoesnot makeformuchrolling,evenoverroughground.Itis notlikelytogetblownoverontoawing-tipina cross-wind,farmorelikelytoground-loopifcontrol islost,withfailureoftheundercarriagecomingfirst.

Thebrakeswerequitefirminbothdirectionsand necessarywhentaxi-invonanyconcrete.Therudder isnotverylargeandpilotsneedallofitwhenmoving ontheground.ForanyonegoinguptotheStearman orHarvard,theArgusisdefinitelyontherightlines asarepresentativetype,withside-by-sideseating andpleasantcabintomakethedemonstrationtask verycomfortable.

Ishouldaddthatthebrakesdofadealittle,when usedacrossawindforlongperiods,butwhatbrakes don'tandtheyshouldnotbesofierceastocausea nose-over,inanycase.Thebigwoodenpropelloris almostirreplaceable!

OurArgusmovedwiththroatyburstsofpowerto theholdingpointatStauning,withatendencytooilupandbecome"rough"ifneglected.Arun-up producedagloriousamountofnoise,butthechecks werenodifferenttothoseofamodernCessna, exceptthattheignitionadvancewasset"advanced" forflight.Flapswerenaturallymanualandasmall amountwasusedfortake-off.Theprogrammewas toflytonearbySpjald,agrassairfield,letmeget usedtotheaeroplaneandthenreturntoStauning's hardrunwayforthemoreinterestinglandings.

Itpaystoopenupthepowerslowlyontake-off andusethetail-wheel'sdragfirmlyontheground whenrudderingfordirectionalcontrol.Thereis certainlyatendencytoswing,butitisnotdangerous toanyonewhoknowsthetail-wheeltypes.

Oncepastthatstage,therestiseasy.Theelevators arequitepleasantandtransitionintoaflyingattitude notdifficulttojudge.Itfeelslikealotofaeroplane tothoseaccustomedto,perhaps,anAuster,andit doestakesomerunwaytogetairbornebutitis safelyoffinthe60sandclimbingquitesafelyat about80m.p.h.Anicedeeproarofengine,not muchover2000rpm;noneofthoseshrill2600softhe flat-foursthesedays.Therateofclimbisrespectable anddoesnotfallbelow500fpm.evenwhenloaded. ThisisreasonablebesidetheCI72ofthesedays.The Argusisnotafastaeroplane,however,andcruises atasteady100mph.SomeCessnasarefasterinthe cruise,asthe172rangehasbeenrefinedsteadily. Intheair,theArgusisrock-steadyandthe controlsarewell-co-ordinated,notabitskittishand nicelybalanced.Thestickisbigandsmoothin action,withtherudderhardlyneedinganyattention inthecruise.Itdoes,whenchangingspeed,however, asthereisquitealotofpoweravailable.Climbingat quitelowspeedsandhighpowerdemandsastrong leg,butbewareoftheenginetemps.inthisarea,if youhaveanyambitionsabouttowinggliderswithan Argus.Iwouldn't,outofrespectforthescarcityof Warnerparts.

Icouldfindabsolutelynovicesinthestallandthe Argushardlygoesbeyondamushing,noddingsink ratherbelow60mph.clean.Itdoesnotdropawing readilyandalwaysrespondswelltorudderif mishandledintoawing-drop.Itisaverywellmanneredaeroplane.Ididnotspinitbecauseit resistedalleffortsunlessoneisgoingtobereally roughwithit,misusingpowerintothebargain.It wasnotunlikeabigPA17Vagabondinthatrespect.

Corningbacktoland,itisbesttoallowquitea longapproach,togetusedtothecorrectattitudes.It wascomfortableat80mph.,withpartialflap. Landinglikethisguaranteesafairrateofclimb,even ifamislandingismade.Rememberingtoleveloff 'high',butstillnotlookingdowntheundercarriage,I concentratedonthebignoserisingupintotheview ahead,thenabumpandwehadsettled,thestickwell back.Forthefirsttime,thisFELTquiteaheavy aeroplaneanditrollsalongwayafterlanding comparedagainwiththelightAustersetc.Itisnota verygoodideatouseharshbrake,asthisfadesfast. Muchbettertoallowtherightamountofspaceand flytheaeroplanetothefieldattherightspeed.It floatsalittle,butnotexcessively,ifthelandingis arrangedcorrectly.Whatdoesgivecauseforalarmin somecasesisthekeepingstraightafterlanding,still withsomespeedon!Rudderrunsoutandbrakeis usedwithtoesasrequired.

Itisquitepossibletonose-overduringalandingif standingheavilyonabrake,sothishastobe watched,evenwiththestickhardback.Cross-winds dorequirealotofcare,themoresoonconcrete runways.TheArguspilotisonlyreallycomfortable whenthelandingisoverandwecometorest.Believe me,it'snotoveruntilyouhave!Ongrass,tostart with,thiswasfairlystraightforward,butthe advancedworkatStauningbroughthomethe problemstome.Notleastwastheunexpected tailwheelshimmywhich'KASsetupshortlyafter touchdownonthehardrunway.Thisistheverydevil tocureandrequiresjusttherighttyrepressure.

Feelingbraver,Iexploredtherealmsof overshoots,thenfull-flaplandings,withover-shoot. Firstsurprisewasadeeporgan-likenotewhich scaredthelifeoutofmewhenIselectedfull-flapon approach!Thiswascausedaerodynamicallyinsome wayclosetothecabinsides.Thereisalotof trimmingtobedoneinthisareaofperformanceandI waswindingfuriouslyatthehandleabovemyright ear,relievingsomesizeableloadsontheelevator. TheArgusapproachedquitenicelyat70mph.with mushybutsafecontrolsforashortlanding.Iwould notcaretogomuchslowerandtheaileronsareafair indicationofwhatcanbedoneatlowspeedsand wheretodrawtheline.Offthisapproach,theroll wasshort,althoughanAusterwilldoitinratherless. Theweightisthedifference.

Overshootswithfullflaparenoisy,pulsating affairs,withflapcominguppartiallywhenreally clearofthegroundandmuchtrim-winding.Iwas quitebusy,buttherateofclimbcouldneverbe describedasdangerous.Therewasquiteadequate power,butIwouldn'twanttotakeriskswithaheavy loadandsmallfield.

Ilaterwentontoconvert3otherpilotsontothe Argusandenjoyedeveryminuteofit.Justoneword ofwarning:NEVERdoalongglideapproachasMr aforcedlanding,withoutwarmingtheengine frequently.It'snotsomuchthatitgetscold,but HOWitoilsup!Theunwarypilotopensthethrottle foragracefulovershootandisgreetedwithaseries ofhorrifyingcoughsandbangs,cloudsofdenseblue smokeandthenthewholethingpicksup,ifyouare lucky.Ifyouarenot,orhavegottoolowbefore openingupanyway,youhavedoneaverynasty bounce,probablywhereyoudidn'tintendto!

TheJurcaMJ5Siroccofirstflewon3August,1962andwaspoweredbya150hpPotez4E-20engine.Ithada fixedlandinggearbutthiswaslaterchangedtoaretractablegearandthepowerplantexchangedfora160hp Lycoming.StructureisverysimilartotheTempete,anearlierJurcadesign,withanall-woodone-piecesinglespanwing,fabriccoveredandanallwoodbasicrectangularsectionplywoodcoveredfuselage.Thetailunitisa cantileverall-woodstructure,tailplaneandfinsbeingplywoodcovered,elevatorandrudderfabriccoveredas aretheailerons.

IsOurP.P.L.Adequate?

Asourskiesbecomemorecrowdedwithnew pilots,isitnottimetothinkagainaboutourprivate pilottrainingmethods?TheP.P.L.courseatpresent usuallylastsupwardsoffortyhoursorthirty-fivein thecaseofaC.A.A.approvedcourse.Inthis comparativelyshorttimethestudentpilotmustbe educatedtoso-calledprivatepilotstandardsby qualifiedinstructors.Tobetaughttoflyan aeroplanetakesbetweensixandtenhours;therest beingmainlyinvolvedwithhowtorecognisewhen somethinggoeswrongoronemakesamistakeand howtorectifythesituation.Todaysinstructormust adheretothesetB.L.A.C.syllabuswhilstgivingthe customervalueformoney.Therearenosetrulesas towhenthestudentiscompetentenoughineach individualexercise,thisdifficulttaskbeinglefttothe instructor.Theinstructormustbeableto differentiatebetweenskillandover-confidencewhich althoughatfirstthoughtseemseasyenough,insome casesisnot.Sopupilandinstructormustapproach thesettasksinaprofessionalmanner.Sometimes studentslearntoflybecauseitimpressestheirgirlor boyfriends—thisisridiculous.Itisawellknownfact thatunlessyoureally want todosomethingyou cannotdevoteallyourattentionstoit.Learning capacityveryoftendependsonthestateofmindof boththepupilandtheinstructor.Itisagoodideafor everyprospectivepupilpilotbeforeheembarksona courseofflyingtohaveatrialflightwithafullflying instructor.Therearelessreputableorganisations whowillsendacompletenewcomerupwithafreshly qualifiedfiftyhourpilot.Thisisasitweretheblind leadingtheblind.Afterhalfanhourorsoofpleasant flyingtheinstructorshouldspendalittletimehaving aninformalchatintherelaxedsurroundingsofthe clubbarorloungetofindoutwhytheprospective pupilwantstoflyandwhatwashisorherreactionto theflight.Themorequestionstheinstructorisasked thebetter,nomatterhowsillyorirrelevanttheymay seemtohim.Hemustunderstandthatthepupilis sometimesnotconversantwithaviationmatters. Obviousasthisunderstandingmayseem,quiteoften anewstudentisdismissedasstupidjustbecausehe hasnotbeentaughtsomethingthatiscommon knowledgeintheaviationworld.

Nowwehaveapersonreadytolearnhowtofly. Notover-confidentbutconfidentenoughthathecan learnwithavalidreasontowanttofly.The B.L.A.C.syllabusisaneffectivesequenceof separatenumberedexercises.Exceptfortheamount ofsolo,solocross-countryandinstrumenttimethere isnolegislationcoveringhowmanyhoursarespent oneachexercise.OfcoursetheGeneralFlyingTest willshowtheimportantfault,ifany,inapilots trainingbutistheG.F.T.stringentenough?Withthe largeincreaseinairtrafficinthepastfewyearsthat isboundtocontinue,anewkindofP.P.L.courseis, inmyopinion,essential.Arevisionofthepresent B.L.A.C.syllabuswithadditionsbeneficialtoboth pilotsafetyandinstructionaltechniquewouldbe ideal.TheGeneralFlyingTestshouldalsobe changedsothatthequalifiedexaminerexamines eachpupilforeachindividualexercisewhenhis instructorfeelsheiscompetent.Moreseparation then,acollectionoflessonsfollowedbyacollection

ofexaminations.Thiswouldalsogivethepupil greaterincentivetoworktowardseachseparate examination.Aconfidenceboosterforperhapsthe depressedstudenthalfwaythroughthecourseora trippingwirefortheover-confidentbeginner,who thinksinstructorsareonlytherejustincase somethinggoeswrong.

Aneasysystemtoimplementwouldbeasetof certificatestheflyingcluborschoolsC.F.I.would issueasthestudentcompletedeachphaseofthe syllabus;withparticularreferencetostalling, spinning,enginefailureaftertake-ott,forced landingsandinstrumentflying.Notenoughcanbe saidaboutthelackofinstrumentexperienceinthe P.P.L.course.Somanyaccidentsstilloccurbecause aninexperiencedpilotfliesinweatherconditions beyondhisinstrumentflyingcapabilities.Somany instructorssharemyopinionthattheP.P.L.course shouldincludemorecomprehensivetrainingin instrumentflyingorperhapsafewhoursinasimple simulator.Atthemomentwecanonlyadvise inexperiencedpilotsonwhennottofly.Thesixtyto ninetyhourprivatepilotmustbemadetorealisehis

TheholderofaGroupAratedP.P.L.isatpresent qualifiedtoflyanysingleenginedaircraftupto 12,500poundssoapilottrainedonaCessna150is allowedbylawtostepstrightintohisSpitfirethathe boughtfor£150.00afterthewaranddowhathelikes withit.This.isaratherextremeexamplebutitisnone thelesspossible.Therearemanysecondhand aeroplanesavailablethatcouldcauseserious problemsforapilottrainedonsuchtypesasCessna orCherokeeiftheproperconversiontrainingisnot given.TheChipmunkforexampleisaverytempting littleaeroplanethatcanbeobtainedatattractive prices.Thisaircraftandmostaircraftofitstypeneed alittlemorecarewhenhandling.Thedifficultiesof conversionfromtricycletotail-wheelareofcourse knownbutstillitislegalforaninexperiencedpilotto attempttoflythesetypesofaircraft.Perhapsafew differenttypesofaircraftcouldbeintroducedinto

InmyviewourpresentPrivatePilot'slicencein somecasesneedstobechangedwiththetimesandto suiteachindividual.Wecannotattainperfectionbut thelittlesuggestionsImakehereIfeelarejustified.I wouldbeinterestedtohearothersopinionsonthe subject.

Ifourcorrespondentexaminestherequirements forthe'wings'hewillseethatwhenamembergains hisP.P.L.hehasafurther40hoursinwhichtofly2 tailwheeland2nosewheeltypes,obtainanR/T licenceandextendhistechnicalknowledgebefore takingthesilverwingsoralexam(costNil).Aftera further100hours,duringwhichheobtainsanI.M.C. rating,hecouldqualifyforhisGoldWings.

BUILDINGASCALE MUSTANG

Theideaofbuildingyourownaeroplaneisnot somethingthatcomesovernight.Inmyowncase, everythinggoesbackto1969partwaythroughmy PPLcourse.IhadjustsoloedinaCondorwhenthe wholethingwasputintocoldstorageforasixweek tripabroad.AsfarasthePPLwasconcerned,this breakwasexactlywhatIdidnotneed,butitdidset methinkingaboutwhatIwoulddowiththelicense whenIgotit.WhatIdidknowwasthat,firstly,I wouldneverownanaircraftand,secondly,thatClub aircraftwerestrictlylimitedwhenitcametodoing onesownthing.

Whileawayand,waitingforanaeroplaneat Auckland,Iboughtacopyof AirProgress fromthe newsstand.Thiswasamagazinewhichatthattime, washomebuilderorientated,andsetmethinking duringthenexteighthoursoverthePacificabout homebuilding.Now,oneofthefewthingsthatIam anygoodatismakingthings,andmyeyewasdrawn tothetwo-thirdsscaleMustangbeineadvertisedin planformbySturgeonair of Canada.Theretractable gear,afterall,shouldnotbeaproblem,justabit morework!Ifyouaregoingtobuildanaeroplane,it mightaswelllooklikeone!

ReturntotheU.K.foundtheCondorgoneanda Chipmunkinit'splace.Induecourse,thelicensewas finishedandalmostimmediatelytheClubwent broke.Thismeantachangetoflyingtinaircraft which,oncethenoveltyhadwornoff,mademethink onceagainaboutwhatIwasgoingtodowiththe PPL.Thethoughtofbuildingmyownaircraftwas stillatthebackofmymind,butIhadnoideaofhow togoaboutit.Thewholesystemofconstructingand maintaininganaircraftseemedtobeabout203/4 spannersand80,170mambojumbo,andIhadnoidea thatP.F.A.evenexisted.

Quitebychance,readinganoticeabouta"fly-in" atShorehamledmetomaketheacquaintanceof P.F.A.WhatIsawwasimpressiveinsomeways. However,therewasnowaythatthehardwareon displaywouldevergetme,at6'4"and280lbs.,off theground.BacktotheMustang.

Obviouslymoreinvestigationwasnecessarybefore astartcouldbemade.PeoplewhomIhadspokento shooktheirheadsandstartedmutteringaboutCurrie WotsandLutonMinors,butavisittoaSouthern Strutmeetingbroughtdifferentresults.Ican rememberStuartMacKayandDavidFaulknerBryantbeingscepticallyenthusiastic,andJohn Walkersaying"Isupposeifwedon'tletyouflyit youcanalwayswritetothe DailyMirror". IdidnotsavthisbutifIdiditwouldbenothingless than TheTimes, F.1.V.W.

Thenextstepswereobvious.HappilyIhavealong garage,sotheworkcouldbedoneathome,and, equallyhappy,Iownedaracingcarwhichcouldbe soldtofinancetheproject.Boththesefactors workedoutwell.Firstly,Icanneverseeanypointin spendingmoretimeintravellingtoajobthancanbe spentonthejoband,secondly,thereisnopointin startingsomethinglikethisifyoucannotseethrough thefinancingaspect,howeverdimly.Ithereforesold thecarandwrotetoP.F.A.toseeiftheywould accepttheproject.FromP.F.A.camealittlegreen bookletwithProject06-10010onthecover,and fromthebuyerofthecarcameacheque,soallwas setfair.

AtaboutthistimetheRedhillStrutwasbornandI startedtoattendtheirmeetings.Thereceptionthat myprojectreceivedwasratherinteresting,again scepticalenthusiasm.BrianDunlopagreedtobethe inspectorfortheproject,sayingineffect"It'sagreat lumpofathingtomake,butifyoumustgoodluck".

Formy150dollarsIreceivedapackofplansabout 3feetlongand6inchesindiameter.Ihavenever countedthem,buteverypartwasfinelydetailedbya professionaldraughtsman.Thearrivaloftile drawingsco-incidedwithChristmas1972,andasthe holidayisalwaysadeadtime,partofitwasspent goingthroughtheplansandtracingthroughvarious componentsviasubandmainassemblytoseeif, whentheyweremade,theywouldbeusable.Tomy surprise,thedrawingswereinfactverygood.Oneof twosystems,withhindsightcouldhavebeenmadein adifferentwaybut,basically,thedesignwassound, havingbeenbasedontheJurcaMJ7'GNATSUM'.

WhathadbecomeobviouswasthatIneededa24 footlongbenchwhichwasrigidandleveloverit's wholelength.Thiswouldbethe"clean"benchon whichassemblyandalignmentscouldtakeplace,as distinctfromthe"dirty"benchwherecomponents wereactuallymade.Theclean/dirtydemarcation becamedifficulttoachieve,particularlywithlarge components,butthegeneralprincipleisworth pursuing,particularlywithmetalandwood componentsbeingmadeatthesametime. Fortunately,Ihadavailabletomesomelengthsof6' x3"RSJandaccesstoapowersaw,sothebench framewasasimple,ifarduousjob.Thetopwas threesheetsof8x4xfchipboard.Unfortunately, madethewholethingabout6"toohighfor comfort!ThepurchaseofaBurgessBandsaw,the

NearcompletedflapoftheMustang.

loanofadiscsanderandaplane,completedthebasic toolsexceptforclamps.Accordingtotheplans, about30clampswereneeded,againwithhindsight thiswascorrect.Theavailablehardwarevariedfrom veryheavymalleableirontoinadequatestripmetal, sothefirstjobforthebandsawwastomaketwo patternssothattwenty6"andten10"clampcastings couldbemadeinaluminium.Forthoseinterested, thescrewsweremadefromstuddingandstandard wingnutsfromthelocaltoolshop,theclampfooton myprehistoriccentrelathe.

Enquiriesaboutsuppliesindicatedthatwoodand sheetmetalwasreasonablyeasytoobtaininthis country,sotostartoffIorderedfromSlingsby Sailplanesenoughwoodandplytomakethefuselage bulkheads,finandrudder,enoughsheetsteeland aluminiumforeverymetalpart,andfrom SturgeonairinCanadaenoughtubetomakethe completeundercarriage.IdecidedonAeroduxglue asagainstAerolite,mainlybecauseIcouldseewhere itwas.ThecolourisasnastyasthesmellandIhave shirtsandtrouserswhich,evennow,aretestimonyto it'sdurability.Ihave,forthelastfouryears, attendedtheP.F.A.dinneratSywellwithapartly Aeroduxshirtasamatterofprinciple!

ThetubingfromCanadatookthreemonthsto arrive.ButIthrashedupfromSouthLondonto KirbymoorsideonaSaturdaymorningtocollectthe firstfromSlingsby,andtomaketheacquaintanceof thepeopleIwouldbedealingwithforthenextfour years.

1mustsaythat,onceworkstarted,theStrut becameenthusiastic,andalthoughthiswasaone manprojectfromstarttofinish,alotofhelpwas forthcoming,inparticularoverwheretogetbitsand pieces.

Backinthedimpast,whenIwasanapprentice,I hadbuiltmyfirstspecialoutofAustinSevenparts. AtthetimeIhadboughtthepartspiecemealfrom breakersandothersources.Thispracticeprovedto methatitwouldhavebeenmoreconvenientand cheapertohaveboughtacompletecarasraw

ConstructionoftheTailplaneSpar. material.Iwasnowignoringthatexperienceand collectingpartspiecemealagain.Findingpartsona projectlikethisisaneverendingjob,andminecame fromallsortsofplaces,someboughtthrough PopularFlying, someoffacrashedaircraft,andthe enginefromAmerica.Theenginemostsuitedtothe designwastheFairchildRanger;aninverted6 cylindersomewhatsimilartotheGipsySix,but happilyonlyhalftheweightandproducing200hpat 2,450rpm.PublishedintheU.S.A.isapapercalled Trade-a-Plane. Thisissomethinglike Exchange& Mart, butallaeroplanesandparts.InthisIfoundmy engineandsourceofsparesinNewYorkState. Fortunately,throughafriendintheStatesIwasable tobuythiswithknowledgeratherthanblind,as wouldhavebeenthecasewithouthishelp.Theprice wasveryfairforazerohourengine,andhappilyit wasshippedbeforethepoundsterlingstartedto imitatealeadballoon.

Withthesesimplepartsmade,thenextstepwasto startonallthecontrolsurfaces,thatis,elevator, rudder,flapsandailerons.Inallcasesthesewereply coveredonply/spruceribsandspars.The arrangementwithBrianDunlopwastomakethe wholethingcompletewithallmetalfittings,but withoutthelastplysection,thisbeinggluedonafter inspection.Ihadsomedifficultyinfollowingthe designer'sthoughtswhilemakingthesepartsbecause therudderhadfourribsoveraboutfourfeet,the elevatorfourribseachsideoveraboutninefeettotal, buttheflapsandailerons,eachaboutfivefeetlong, containedfifteenribseach,alldifferent.

SuchwastheprogressbySeptember1973,six monthsafterstarting.Thesumtotalwasallthe controlsurfaceshangingintheroof,thefuselage bulkheadsandjustaboutallthesmallmetalfittings. Further,astarthadbeenmadeonsomeofthemetal partswhichneededwelding.Themethodadopted herewastofabricatebytackweldingthemmyself.I wasluckyenoughtohaveaccesstowelding equipment,andthejobwasdoneafterworkinalot ofsmalldoses.Ultimately,Ihadagoodbatchofbits andpiecesandthesewerethensentouttobewelded byaqualifiedwelder.Becausethesepartshadbeen madewellaheadofdemand,Icouldaffordtoleave themwiththeweldertobedoneinhisowngood time.Hence,wedidn'tgetoneachothersnerves,and thecostwasalsokeptdown.Oncetheseparts returnedtheywereallplatedandpassivated,andthe insideofallstructurescoatedwithlinseedoilto preventinternalcorrosion.

JustbeforewintersetinIwasabletomakethe horizontalstabilizer.Thiswasagainaplycovered structure,butwithanewtwist.Thetwosparswere spruce/plystructures,butcurvedinplanandtapered insection.

Steamingwasallnewtome,anditappearedtobe newtoanyoneIaskedadvicefrom.Intheend,an oldcarpropshaftwasusedasthechamberforthe wood,andanelectrickettleconnecteduptoitwith braidedPVChose.Ragswereusedforbungingupall theholes.Ifthereaderisfacedwithanythinglikethe sameproblem,myexperiencemaybeofhelp.The sprucewas20mmx20mmandwasleftinthe chamberfor30minutes.Itwasthenbentintoajig madeonthebenchtop,andleftuntilthenext eveningbeforebeingremoved.Onremoval,the woodwantedtospringbackslightly.Ifoundit necessarytoinitiallyoverbendthepartbyabout50 inordertoobtainthedesiredeffect.Muchlateron intotheproject,somepartsofthewingribhadtobe treatedinasimilarfashion,butofcoursethesections weremuchlighter.

Upuntilthistime,Ihadbeenobtainingasteady supplyofpartsfromSturgeonairinCanada. FortunatelyIhadrunaheadfurtherthanwas necessarybecausetheywentbankrupt.Thiswasnot entirelyunexpectedasnolettershadbeenanswered forsometime,andnosensehadbeenforthcomingby telephone.Thelastpartstoarriveweresome mouldings,thecanopybubble,andenoughtubeto maketheenginemount.Thislastitemdidnotstrictly havetocomefromAmerica,butIfeltthat,withsuch animportantcomponent,itwouldbebesttousethe exactdrawingspecificationratherthanargueabout therelativemeritsofU.S.versusU.K. particularlyastheAmericanstandardwall thicknessesarealsodifferent.

STRUTTINGAROUND

NORTHEASTERNSTRUT

DavidBucklegaveaveryinterestingtalkatthe Septembermeeting,entitled'Goingabroadinalight aircraft'.Hecommencedbydescribingthe preparationoftheaircraft,suchasoilchange,tyres, plugsetc.,andmanagedtoslipinacommercialfor somespareshehasavailable.Heexplainedhoweasy itistoaltertheC.G.oftheaircraftifoneloadedup withpresentsonthereturntrip,andhownecessaryit istomakesurethatlifejacketsarewornanda dinghycarriedandtohaveaditchingprocedure. Davealsolistedpersonalandaircraftdocuments,a usefultipforconvertingmetrestofeet,flightplans, dangerareas,alternativeaerodromesetc.,etc.John TowersandRamseyDrydenbroughttheeveningtoa closebyshowingsomeexcellentaerialslideviewsof theAlps.Thoseofyouwhoforonereasonor another,couldnotgettoYearbyonSunday25th September,missedafullandexcitingday.Although reportswerereceivedthattheweatherwasnottoo goodinsomepartsoftheregion,thesunshoneout ofaclearblueskyatYearbygivingtheearlyautumn dayatouchofgoldenmagnificence.

Allvisitors,whethertheycamebyairorroad,were servedwithfreerefreshmentsbyMrs.Tower,Mrs. MarshallandMrs.Buckle(thankyou,Ladies,for yourwillingandgeneroushelp).BobSwinn, AppointedAirTrafficControllerfortheevent,was keptverybusywiththesignallampandtherewere occasionswhenhehadmorethanoneaircraftonthe circuit.JohnConnollywithhislittlebagoftricks, soonhadaswopshopoperating.Therewasno aerobaticdisplaybyBarrySmithbecausehisaircraft wasdismantled,butJohnWhitinginhisTailwind, gaveacropsprayingdemonstrationthatputthe707 displayatTeesideintheshade.

AsafinaltothislastN.E.Strutfly-inof1977,we mustthankJohnTowersfortheuseofhisairstrip, whichmustbeoneofthemostscenicinthecountry beingsituatedonthenorthernboundaryoftheNorth YorksNationalParkandonlyafewmilesinland frombeautifulruggedcoastline.

WESTMIDLANDSSTRUT

Eachmonth,thankstotheeffortsofColinPenny andthegenerosityofourmembership,weareableto reportthat'ourlibrarycontinuestogrow'.Itisnow understoodfromRalphGreenfield,thatthe PracticalMechanicsmagazineserieswhich introducedtheLutonMinorallthoseyearsago,will soonbeavailableforloantomembersfromthe library.Onceagainweappealfordonationstothe librarywhichis,webelieve,asignificantandunique achievementforaP.F.A.Strut.

Thesepasttwomonthshaveseenafurther strengtheningofourmembershipwhichnow standsat46withafurtherfourpending,sothatwe shouldreach50soon.Itwasencouragingtoseeyet anotherrecordturn-outforourSeptembermeeting (27present),whichcertainlyprovedthepopularity ofHaroldJones'talksaboutbuildingmetal aeroplanesandprobablyofinstructionaleveningsin general.Fromthis,wehopethatourprogrammefor thecomingyearwillbesimilarlypopular.Thiswill commencewithaseriesoflecturestobegivenbyMr.

TheOctobermeetingoftheNorthKentStrut yieldedanattendanceofthirtypeopleincluding severalprospectivenewmembers.Mr.John Alexander(theguestofmemberKeithBlake)gavean interstingtalkaccompaniedbyslides;thesubjectwas Airships,onwhichJohnhasspentmanyyearsof research.Inanswertoquestions,Johnexpoundedon manyofthefinerpointsofAirshipoperationswhile pointingoutmanylessobviousdetailsshowninhis slidesandthereasoningbehindthem.

DavidWise,onetimeaircraftspotternowturned strutmember,followedonbyshowinghisslidesof aircraftpastandpresentandgivingbriefdetailsand history.

Whennotservingliquidrefreshments,the 'Barman'wasseentobeindeepconversationwith severalmemberswhowereengineprospecting.The namesLycoming,Continental,andCorvairwere heardtobementioned.Corvair?Hrn.,Strange,very strange!,eventheirbeerwentFLAT.

AtalkbyMauriceWhitewasgiventomembers presentattheSeptembermeeting.Hisexperiencesof operatinghis2seatJodelD112G-AYMUoverthe pastyearand92hrs20minsflyingtimewere described.Duringthistimehecarried32different peopleandvisited21airfields.Mauriceproduceda costanalysiswhichhasaveragedapproximately £10.00perhour.

TheFly-inatBarton,Manchester,organisedby theNorthWesternStrut,wasfavouredwithmuch betterweatherthanlastyear'sevent.Sunday morningofthe7thAugustdawnedclearandsunny inNorthernEnglandatleast.Furthersouth,(he weatherwasadifferentstory.Thosethatdidarrive werefromfairlynear,orfromfurthernorth.The longestflightwasmadebyaSiroccofrom SunderlandbeatingtheJodel'FWflownbyF. Altogether13aircraftarrivedfromotherairfields, inadditiontheOlympia163sailplaneofTerry Hogbenwastrailedin.Aseparatearrivalslogfor aircraftattendingtheFly-inwasnotkeptthisyear, allarrivalsbeingloggedintheLancashireAeroClub normalbook,togetherwithalltheusualclub arrivals.TenaircraftresidentatBartonalsotook partinthefestivities,acompletelistofaircraftwill befoundattheendofthisreport.

TheOlympia463sailplane,afterbeingassembled, wasflownbyTerryHogben,aero-towedbyfan JennisonintheBeagleHusky,andgavean impressivedisplayofaerobatics,gracefulandsilent; apartfromslipstreamnoiseinthelowzooms.The BartonChipmunkflownbyRowanStevensthen gaveanequallyimpressivedisplayofaerobatics althoughofadifferentcharacter.

Allvisitingpilotsweregivenafreemealinthe Bartonclubhouse;mealvouchersandP.F.A.stickers dispensedtoallvisitorsbySusanMinor-Clarkson, whowelcomedguestsandloggedarrivals.Rick BennisonactedasStrutAirTrafficControlOfficer fortheday,PaulConnattydidhisnowusual'thing' asbatman,marshallingtheaircraft.

NewsoftheformationoftheSunderlandStrut, theforerunneroftheNorthEasternStrut,wasgiven inaletterfromLesRichardson,publishedin Popular Flying (Jan/Feb.1973).OnOctober8thofthe preceedingyear,ameetinghadbeenheldat SunderlandAirportinanavailablehangar.The airport,nowoperatedbySunderlandCorporation, waspreviouslyR.A.F.Usworth,thebirthplaceof 607Squadron.

Aphotographillustratingthisoccasionshowssome ofthefoundermemberswhoincluded:Les Richardson,FredHodgson,JohnGladish,Fred Greenwell,BillWalker,RamsayDryden,andCyril Wedlake.Twenty-fiveprospectivemembersattended thisfirstmeetingandtwelvevisitingaeroplaneswere linedupwithLesRichardson'sCurrieWotGAPNT,DougCollinson'sFaIkeG-AXEOand severalultra-lightbelongingtoSunderlandgroups.

Earlymeetingswereheldmonthlyonthe1st Sundayat2.00p.m.andwerealternatedbetween SunderlandandTeesideairports.Itwassoon realisedthataSundayafternoonwasthewrongtime toholdameetingforflyers.Followingtwoattempts byFredHodgson,theOrganiseratthattime,tofind asuitable'Tavern',theBlackHorseatCoxhoe,was selectedasthemeetingplace.Meetingshereareheld onthe3rdWednesdayeveningofeverymonth.

FromMay1974,thenameofthestrutwaschanged toTheNorthEasternStrut.Anannualsubscription of£2.00permembertocoverprintingandpostageof thenewsletterischargedatthepresenttime.

Thehomebuildingsuccessesofthisstrutinclude thefirsttwoCavalierstoflyintheU.K.,aSirocco,a NipperandaCurrieWot.Inadditionquiteafew projectsareinvariousstagesofcompletionand severalmembersareownersofcommercially manufacturedaircraft.TheStrutholdsanannual camp-in/fly-inrallyusuallyinJune,atBruntonin Northumberland,amidthescenicbeautyof England'sundiscoveredland,whereonecanretreat intoaworldoffolklorelegend.

BRUNTONFLY-IN1801-19thJune,1977

ThisyearsFly-inatBrunton,organisedbythe NorthEasternStrut,wasagreatsuccess,being attendedbyforty-twovisitingaircraftandalarge contingentofcarsandcaravans.OnSunday afternoon,thenumberswereswelledevenfurtherby thelocalsfromthesurroundingarea.

TerryBoyesandhistwoA.T.C.cadetsearnedthe praiseofeveryonebyprovidingteas,coffeeand mealsoverthewholeweekend.Alongsidethis activity,theystillfoundtimetolistthevisiting aircraftinorderofarrival;(seeaccompanyinglist).

Theweekendweatherwasovercastandcoldbutit didnotrain.OnSaturdayeveningabarbecueand bonfirewasheldontheairfieldwhichwasobviously appreciatedbyeveryonethere.

OnSundaymorningthefly-incommitteemetto arrangethespotlandingcompetitionandinspectthe homebuiltaeroplanesthatwerecompetingforthe WhitleyBayGuardianTrophy.Forthespotlanding competitionthehelpwasenlistedofalocalresident, MajorBuckle,retd.,norelationtoDavidBuckleour Vice-chairman,andtwovisitingpilotsfrom Glasgow.Thecompetitionstartedat14.00hrslocal timewithelevenentries,MajorBuckleactedas adjudicatorbymeasuringoffthedistances. UnfortunatelyforFrankRyman,asheapproached thespotafewsheepstrayedontotherunwaycausing himtoovershoot.

ThecompetitionwaswonbyLesRichardsonflying JodelG-BACJwithadistanceof18yards,just beatingJohnTowers'distanceof20yards.

Afterthiscompetitiontheawardswerepresented byLesRichardson,asfollows;

TheWhitleyBayGuardianTrophy, forthebest homebuilt,andwhichcanonlybeawardedtoNorth EastStrutmembers,wentjointlytoRidleyKendal andOliverSmith.Thesub-committeedecidedthat theonlywaytheycouldrecognisetheachievements ofthesebuilders,wastoawardthetrophytobothof themforsixmonthseach.

TheLongestDistanceShield, whichwasdonatedbv DavidBuckle,wenttoSandyHendersonwhohad flowninfromInvernesswithAllisterSutherlandin JodelG-ARNY.

TheSealedTimeofArrivalPrize, waswonbyMr. McEvoyofGlasgow.HehadarrivedonSunday morningat10.35hrsinaVictaAirtourerG-AZZU. TheSpotLandingTrophy, asreportedpreviously, waswonbyLesRichardson.Finally,apresentation wasmadetoAndrewRobinson,withthesincere thanksofTheNorthEastStrut,forhiskindnessin allowingthemtousehisfieldyearafteryear.The successofaneventsuchasthisdependsuponthe helpandsupportofmembers,theirwives,friends, andvisitors.Insteadofnamingindividuals,the Organisersthankeveryone,onbehalfofTheNorth EastStrut,whocontributedtowardsthisenjoyable weekend.

AtSolent'sSeptemberstrutmeetingtheevening beganwithageneraldiscussionoftheP.F.A. AnnualRallyatSywell in1977.Thiswasfollowedby theshowingofthefilm'WindintheWires',brought alongbyDerekCarterand wasfollowedbyanother filmaboutBrooklands,theBritishmotorracing circuitofthe1930's.

Itiswithgreatsadnessthatwehavetorecord thedeathofDougBianchi.Doughadalways heldagreatinterestinthePFAandhadacted asourChiefInspectorforovertwentyyears. Asaprewarlicencedengineerhehadalways maintainedadeepinterestinlight aircraftimmediatelyafterthewarhoweverhe wasresponsibleforsettinguptheBritish EuropeanAirwaysEngineeringSchooland latertookpartintheearlyprovingflightsof BritishSouthAmericanAirwaysasflight engineer.Hewasperhapsbestknownasthe founderofPersonalPlaneServiceswhich devotedallitsactivitiestolightaircraft.PersonalPlaneServicesprosperedandinvolvedall oftheBianchiFamilywithhiswifeEdnaand histwinchildrenTony&Angie.Dougwasa manofboundlessenergyabundantenthusiasm andasuperbsenseofhumour.Aboveallelsehe wasanenthusiastwithanaturaldesiretomake aircraft.Heisbestrememberedforhisreplica aircraft,particularlythoseforthefilm"The MagnificentMenintheirFlyingMachines"for whichhebuilttheDemoiselle.Thissparkedoff otherreplicasandthehangarsatBookerholda hostofaircraftmadebyhisownhands includingtheFokkerEnttheMoraneN,the ManningFlandersandtheVickersMonoplane tonamebutafew.Healsowasafounderofthe "WarBirds"whichhaskeptmanywartime aircraftintheair,allinmagnificentcondition. Asamanhehadinfinitekindnessandpatience toanyonewhowasinterestedinaeroplanes.He wouldthinknothingoftravellingmanymilesto helpafellowenthusiastortothrowopenthe hangardoorstohelpsomepoorpersonwho hadgotsomeseeminglyinsurmountable problemwithhisaeroplane.Hewasnotaman whohadtimeforcommitteesorpaperworkbut preferredtogetinamongsttheworkwhichhe lovedandenjoyed.Iftherewasanytroubleto besortedouthewasreadytolendahand.In theformativeyearsofPFAhegaveusalotof helpandguidanceandweshallalwaysbeinhis debt.Hisinfectiousgoodhumouralwaysrose tothesurfacewithabigsmileandachuckle whichmadehimafriendofallwhomethim. Hewillhesadlymissed.

Itisalsowithgreatsadnessthatwerecordthe deathofNeilWilliamson11December,whenthe SpanishbuiltHeinkelIIIhewasflyingfroma SpanishAirForceBasetotheUK,crashedin mountainouscountry.HiswifeLynnandthetwo engineers,JosephDonaghyandStephenParnell accompanyinghimontheferryflighttoBlackbushe andtheHistoricAircraftCollectionthere,also perished.

Suchwashisreputationandability,thatfew peoplewhoknewNeil,werepreparedfortheshock newsthathehadmethisdeathdespitethefactthat hehadbeenreportedoverdueonthisflight,for surelywithhiswideexperienceandcarefulplanning hewould,oneimagined,alwayscomethroughinthe end.Butalas,itwasnottobe.Andwehavelosta goodfriendandanexceptionalairman.ForNeil WilliamswasagoodfriendtothePFAandallit stoodfor.HelearnedtoflywiththeCardiffUltra LightClubsome26yearsagoatthetenderageof17 andneverlosthisinterestorenthusiasmforourkind offlying(andatthetimeofhisdeath,wasrestoring aTipsyBforhisownuse).

Neilrosetogreatheightsinhischosenprofession. Hismanyachievementsthroughouthisrelatively longanddistinguishedcareer,intheRAF,the aviationindustryandsportingaviationarealready wellknown.Hewonmanyawardsincludingour ownRoderickTurnerawardforhisoutstanding contributiontolightandsportingaviation,andthe Queen'scommendationforhisairmanshipinthe nowfamousZlinSparfailureincident.Thelistis endlessandmanywillnowseekacopyofhis autobiographicalwork'Airbourne'.Tolearninure ofNeil'srichexperienceforhewasalsoan accomplishedwriter,whosestylewaseasytoread andunderstand.Manyfeelthathisbookon aerobaticswillbecomethe'StandardWork'ona subjectthatheunderstoodandlovedsowell..4 dedicationthatledhimtobecomebothBritishand Europeanaerobaticchampionandhighlyplacedin Worldchampionships.Itisnotpossibletorecord here,evenafractionofhisexploitsand accomplishments,sufficeittosaythathebecamea householdnameandalegendinhisownlifetime,a manwhocould'namehisprice',yetturnedupyear afteryearat'our'SywellRallytogive,without recompense,themostpoeticdisplayofflyingweare everlikelytosee.
