Atthestartofanewdecadethereisalottolookforward to.Manypersonswillbemoaningaboutincreasedcosts, fuelbillsandotherhandicaps,butnecessityisthemother ofinven'ion.Therehasneverbeensomuchscopeand incentiveforthetrueaeronauticalinventorintheamateur fieldsofaviation.Therearcnewmaterials,newengines andnewtechnologyavailable.TheAssociationcameinto beingbecauseofthelackofultralightaircraftatatime whencostswereproportionallyjustashigh,andoutof thisrosesomeexcellentlowpoweredaircraftmanyof whicharestillflying.To-daythereareseveralsmall enginescapableofbeingadaptedforuseinaircraft. Materialsofnewformsarebecomingreadilyavailableand moderntechnologyisavailableformoreefficientairfoil sections.Wehaveseeninthelastdecadeasuccessful man-poweredaircraft,asuccessfulsolarpoweredaircraft, andawholelineofaircraftusingtheglassfoam techniquesdevelopedbyBurtRutan.Whatmorecanwe askfor?Wehaveourownorganisationtocoverthe airworthinessaspectshelpedbyaverysympathetic airworthinessdivisionoftheC.A.A.Allthatremainsis forustoquitthedreamerstageanddosomething!

OnSaturday4thAugustWhiskeyZuluandIwent uptoInvernessforourannualholiday.Wefollowed thesamerouteasofpreviousyears—withabreakfor teaatSunderland.Theweatherhadbeenverygood asfarasSouthShields,butatthispointithad becomeverymurky.Lowcloudandpoorvisibility hadpreventedaPFAcontingentfromSunderland whowereinboundtotherallyatFearn,gettingany furthernorththanBruntonAirfieldinNorthumberland.
AtSunderlandImadeaseriesofattemptsat contactingPerthandDundeeformynextenroute stop,butneitherairfieldwouldanswerthephone. decidedthereforetosavourthehospitalityofthe BritishAirportsAuthorityatEdinburgh.They answeredtheirphoneandtoldmetheywereopen24 hours,hadfuel,40kmsvis.and2oktasat2000ft.I tookoffandfollowedthecoastandrailwayNorth.I passedBruntonandobservedthegroupofPFA aircrafthuddledtogetherontheground;itwasabit darkbutIneverhadtocomebelow2000ftandpretty soonIturnedthecorneratStAbbsHeadandwas headingwestuptheFirthofForthinbrightsunlight. IcalledupEdinburghandtheygavemeastraightin ontoRunway26.Theapproachisspectacularasyou flybetweenFettesCollegeandEdinburghCastlewith thetwoForthBridgesupinfrontandslightlytothe right.Theairportwaslookingparticularlyquietthat lateafternoon.Nothingseemedtobehappeningbut theykeptmeverybusychangingfrequencyfrom approachtotowertoground.AftertouchdownI wasclearedtothegeneralaviationterminalonthe southsideofthefield.Thebuildingwasoneofthese prefabricatedsinglestoreyjobs,verymodernin aspectwithlotsofwoodandglass,itcontaineda smallloungeandteabar—whichwasshut—and therewasnoonearound.TheTowerhadgivenmea telephonenumbertocallforfuelsoIwenttothe handsetonthewallanddialled,nothinghappened.A noticebesidethephonesaidlocalcallsonly,thecode Ihadbeengivenmeantnothingtomebutitwasquite clearthatthisphonewouldnotacceptthenumber.I wasabouttogobacktotheFourniertocallthe TowerovertheradiowhentheCFIofthelocalclub walkedin.Hebrokethenewstomethatthefuel installationclosedat5o'clockintheafternoonandif Ididgetholdofanyonetherewouldbeaturningout feeof£17beforeadropoffuelpassedthenozzle.I nearlyfaintedandexplainedIonlywantedtwoor threegallonstosafe-guardmyarrivalatInverness wherefriendsawaitedme.Bygreatgoodfortunethis lovelymanwasafriendofmyhosts,andsotohelp meonmywayheofferedmefueloutofoneofhis clubaircraft.TogetherweshovedtheFournier beneaththewingofaCessna150,andwiththeaidof sixfeetofplastictubingwhichIcarryforsuch contingencies,wesyphonedoffacoupleofgallons directlytanktotank.
IreachedInvernessthatevening,LixandPaul Gliddonmetmeandsaidseveralaircrafthadmadeit throughtoFearn,includingaMusketeerfrom Sunderland.SomeoftheBruntonlothadreturnedto baseandleaptintoabiggerandfastershipandhad pressedthroughtotheparty.
SundaydawnedatypicalHighlandday—heavy rainshowers—spectacularcloudformations followedimmediatelybywonderfulvisibilitythat enablesyoutoreadanewspaperheadlinefromfifty miles.LizandPaultookmedowntotheairfieldand
asIwasgettingWZreadyforthefifteenminutetrip acrossCromartyFirth,ClivePonsfordnowofCega Aviationwalkedovertosayhello.Iwassurprised anddelightedtoseehimagain.FormerlyShoreham basedandnowcharterflyingfromGoodwood,Clive haddoneabitofhourbuildingforhiscommercial onWZandstillhadawarmspotfortheRF4.Itook offandcrossedovertheCromartyGapandletdown intotheFearncircuit,alineofaircraftwereneatly parkedontheupwindendofrunway11.ATipsy Nipperwasrollingtoahaltfromitslandinganda marshallerwasontherunwayassistinghimtopark.I poppedthegeardownanddroppedontothe concreterunway,scatteringgnatsanddandelion seeds,themarshallerwalkedouttomeetme—good grief—itwasGrahamPostancefromShoreharn! "FirstCliveandnowyou"Isaid,"I'vejustcome 600milestogetawayfromyoulot".
IwasescortedtotheControlTowerwhichwasa mostcurioussight,atypicalRAFTowerofWW2 vintage,everywindowhadbeenremovedbythe farmerwhooperatestheairfieldandincorporated intohisownhouse.Additionalholeshadbeen knockedinthewallsforeaseofaccessandinthecase ofthefirstfloortoincreasethebreathtakingviews. InalltheseaperturehungPFAmemberslike monkeys,wavingandcheeringanditwasplaintosee averygooddowasinprogress.Iwasled upstairs—thegroundfloorbeingoccupiedbythe farmer'ssheep—andintothemainlivingroom.This waslinedwithstrawbales,calorgascookingranges pumpedoutnotonlywelcomeheatbutbangersand beefburgers.Acupofscaldingsoupwaspushedinto myhandsandInoticedaverypotentbrewofhome madebeerwasavailabletothosewhoweren'tdriving orflying—judgingbythenumberoflanguidbodies thatlayaroundinsleepingbagsithadbeenquitea Saturdaynight.
Therallywounddownabout5o'clock,Islipped backintoInvernessjustintimetobegrabbedby PaulwhoshovedmeintoaBolkowHelicopterfora quicktriptopickupsomephotographsforashort detailatNairnShipyard.I'dneverbeeninaHelio before(Navalterm—onlypeasantsreferto choppers,choppersarefalseteethandwhenusedin thesingularmeansomethingquitedifferent!)itwas fantastic.Itreallyiseverythingyou'veeverdreamed aboutflyingcarpets,andtheadversecommentsI'd heardaboutnoiseandvibrationwerecompletely cancelledoutbyspeedandinstantmotion.
ThenextdayIgotmysecondHelioride.Paul installedmeinthefrontseatofabigBellHelicopter andIwentwithhimtotheZapataNordicOilRig,40 milesnorthofInvernessandjustoutsideterritorial waters.Wewerecarryingareliefcrewofroustabouts totherigandcollectingthosewhowerecomingoff duty.ZapataNordicisnotbigbyoilrig standards—buttomeitlookedhuge.Theroundtrip tookabout40minutesandwasflownataround300 feet,againIfailedtonoticethevibrationasthesea slippedpassedtheperspexpanelbelowtherudder pedals.Thistrulyistheworldofmagiccarpets.
OnTuesdayIhadadayoflocalflying,andvisited Banffairfield,desertedexceptforweekendswhen theHighlandAeroClubrunsaday'sflyingtraining forthosenotabletogettoInvernessandDornoch. Dornochisadelightfulgrassfieldofconsiderable antiquityjustnorthoftheTaMDangerArea.The flightwasabitfraughtbecausetheTaMrangewas active;therewereafewrainshowersbetweenmeand theairfield,somewereabitheavyish,anddespitemy radiocontactwithLossieRadar,andaclearanceinto

thestrip1twicefoundRAFfighteraircraftknifeedgingroundtowardsmeastheylinedupontothe attackwelloutsidetheirareawithmebetweenthem andthetarget!This,whenyouareinandoutofrain showersandinanUltraLightaircraft,canbevery frightening.Howevernoharmwasdone,butIdid askLossieRadartokeeptheircowboysawayfrom me,Idon'tthinkthecowboyexpressionwentdown toowell.IflewacircuitofDornochinbrilliant sunshineandnoticedsealsbaskingonasandbank justeastofthethresholdofthegrassrunway.This airfieldhastheseaontwosidesandisonlyafew minuteswalkfromDornochTownacrossagolf courseandneatcampingsite.Thenearbymountains makeitanidyllicspot,itisnearlyalwaysinthesun.I noticedthatwhileithadrainedelsewheretheground atDornochwasquitedryandpuddle—free.
Wednesdaydawnedfine,andaquickvisittothe Met.officeandacoupleofphonecallsshowedthat theWestCoastofScotlandwashavingitsbest summerdaysofar.Idrewsomelinesonmymapand gotintotheFourniergivingStornoway—hopefully —asmydestination.IdecidedtorouteviaBonar BridgeandLochShinbutI'dkeepmyoptionsopen andwouldbepreparedtoconiebackifIcouldn'tget throughthemountains.Cloudbasewasbetween 3000and35001twithmountainsgoingupto380011. Thecoverwasabout4oktaswithbrightbluesky showingthrough,sooffIwent.Therewereoneor twoshowersaboutbuttheydidn'tamounttomuch and1wassoonupatBonarBridge,Ifollowedthe railwaylinetoLochShinandthenIsawapretty heftyrainstormsometwentymilesaheadblotting outtheendoftheloch.Itookthelefthandvalley whichwasbathedinsunlightandfollowedthe narrowroadwhichcrossestheHighlandsfromEast toWest.Afterabout15minutesflyingIrealisedI waslookingdownatunnel,mountainsoneitherside roofedinbycloud,atsomethinginthedistancethat wassobrightIhadtoputsunglasseson.ThenIsaw PopularFlying,January-February,1980
itwasthesea—thiswastheNorthMinchesand nothingnowseparatedmebutwaterfromtheOuter Hebrides.ThecloudabruptlyendedasIcrossedthe coastlineatLochinvar,aheadIcouldmakeoutthe mountainsonLewisandHarris,tothesouthlay Skye.Thecrossingtook24minutes,theseawasthe bluestIhadseenforyearsbuttheHebrideswere makingtheirownweatherpatternandATCat Stornowaytoldmetheywerehavingarainshower. ThismademynavigationveryeasyasIsimply pointedWZatthedarkbitofcloudupaheadand sureenoughIspottedtheairfieldunderneathit.I joinedoverheadat20000andtooksome photographs,tothenorthofthefieldstoodthevast hangarthatIhadpreviouslyheardabout,built duringthewarwhenthefieldwasexpandedforthe RAF.Ithadsufferedratherfromlackof maintenance,theroofgirdersarerottenwithrust fromthesaltairanddroopbeneaththeweightof Starlingdroppings,itiscondemnedandhasjustbeen lefttocollapse.
Idroppeddownontotherunwayjustasthe showerstoppedandpulledofftheintersectionand taxiedtotheapron.BehindthetowerstoodaBritish AirwaysViscountjustarrivedfromInverness.Inside thetowerImetthecrew,theCaptainwasexRoyal NavyandhadservedonHMSPeregrine,better knowntousasFordAerodrome,soheknewthe SouthernStrutareawell.HisfirstofficerPeter HarrisonfromJerseyhadlatelyreturnedfromStuart Mackay'sDHMothRallywherehehadcaptainedhis syndicateRapide.Bothturnedouttobefriendsof LizandPaulGliddon's.OneoftheAirTraffic Controllerswashavinganindepthconversation aboutplasticmodelbiplaneswithspecialemphasis ontheRapide.TheAirportManager'ssecretary mademeacupofteawhilstImadeplansforflying South.UnfortunatelyIwasnotgoingtogettoBarra asthetidewaswrong,no—TheFournierisnota seaplane—Barrastripisonthebeachandonly useableatlowwater!ButIwasgoingtobeableto visitBenbecula.TheViscountcrewwentoutand madetheirdeparturebacktoInvernessandI followedwithmymapsrefoldedandnewlines drawn.ThefirstthingInoticedwasthatWhisky ZuluhadcollectedanInternationalPlasticModel AircraftAssociationstickeronthetailfin.Sitting besidethebigViscounttheFournierhadlookedabit likeaplastictoy.
ItookoffandsetcourseSouth.TheIslesofHarris andLewisareverymountainous,thelocalsfarm sheepandmakeHarrisTweedfromthewool.They alsokeepaveryausterekindofSunday,which makesitdifficulttovisittheOuterIslesoveraweekend.AfterHarris,NorthUisthoveinview,thislittle islandseemedtobeonlyafewfeetabovetheAtlantic swell—itwasdeeplypitedwithfloodedholesand lookedverylikethephotographsofFlandersinthe FirstWorldWar.Ofcoursetheseholeswerereally rairsi.?edlakes.Isawnotreesandtheredidn't appeartobeabladeofgrass,justthisflatbrown rocksurfacecoveredbylichen,itisthislichenthatis scrapedofftherocksandstewedtomakethedyesfor thetweed.AsingletrackcrossedtheIslandandI couldmakeoutoneortwolowstoriedcrofts—the lifelookedashardastheterrain.Nextcame Benbecula—asmallislandwhichatfirstsight appearstobeallairfield.Therunwaysareverylong, andwereexpandedforMilitaryflying,thoughof coursethefielditselfisveryoldandwasusedbefore thewarbytheinterislandDragonsandRapidesI gavetheToweracallandtheysoundedsurprisedto hearfromme.Theyaskedmetoorbitonthedead sidewhilstanambulanceflighttookoff.Despitea stiffishwestwindIwatchedawhiteIslandertaxiotil

Iparkedontheapron,theFireEngineandfuel bowsercametearingoverandsodidanRAFOfficer fromthebase;theyweredelightedtoseealight aeroplaneandWhiskyZuluwasthefirstFournierin theHebrides.ILeftWZtotheadmirersandwent intotheTower.Iwasstartledtohearavoice shouting"comehereandsitdownyoustupidbitch".
AsmyheadclearedthebannistersIcouldseeitwas thecontrollertalkingtohissheepdogpuppy.He introducedhimselfasJockKerrandafineno nonsensecharacterhewas.1satandlistenedtohim foraboutanhourashepointedoutthelocalland marks;thenturningtofacethewestheshowedme thedistantsmudgeonthehorizonthatwasStKilda. At5.30Imadeamove,startedupandtaxieddown thedesertedrunway,didmychecksandtookoff,I turnedleftandcrossedtheMinchestotheIsleof Skye,theCullinsstoodoutwhiteinthesunlightandI climbedupto2000ft.Therewerestilloneortwo showershangingaboutoverthemainlandshoreline andtheInnerIslands,butyoucouldseethemand takeavoidingaction.MyonlyconcernwasthatI couldn'traiseScottishontheradio,butsuddenlyasI passedoverEiggandRhumtheycamethroughfives. ThenextdayIputthebatteryonchargeandgave theFournierarest.Paultookmeforafinaljauntin ahelicopterandIpreparedtoreturntoShoreham.I departedfromInvernessat9.30ontheFriday morning—Iwassadtogobuttheweatherforecast fortheweekendwasdreadful.Itwasanother fantasticday,visibilitywasagainunlimited,Icrossed theCairngormsandhadatailwind,whenIgottothe FirthofForthIhadmadesuchgoodtimeIdecided tocarryonstraightdowntoSunderland.AsIcrossed theTyne,SunderlandToweraskedmeifI'djoin themforafishandchipslunch!Thisisoneofthe reasonswhyIlovethisairport,kindlyandgenerous staffwhotakearealprideintheservicetheygive.
Iwassoonawayagain,theNorthernRegional Glidingcompetitionsweregoingfullblast,asI passedSuttonBankIsawgagglesofsailplanesall acrosstheValeofYork—weusedtocallawell loadedthermalfullofglidersaplywoodcloud,nowI supposeyou'dcallitaglassfibrecloud.At Pontefract,industrialeffluenceandathinveiloftop cloudwascuttingofftheconvection,Ipassedtwo sailplanesbattlingitoutoverthetopofthecooling towersastheytriedtostaveoffgravity.Istoppedat Tollertonandpickedupsomefuel,aKestrel sailplanefollowedmeintotheconsternationofthe AirTrafficController."Hecan'tcomeinhere withoutaradioetc.etc.",Idepartedinhaste.
BackatShorehamIputWZintothehangar,a compressioncheckwasaboutdueandIhadthe hourstoworkoutinthelogbook,therewasnosign ofthethreateningweather,Isighedandwenthome,I wasverytired.

"There'sachapbythenameofDonChisholmat RugbywhohasboughtadamagedLutonMajor,he wantstoformagrouptorebuildit,whatdoyou think"?"Hangon,I'lljustgetmytoolkitoutand comeover,"Isaid."Wellhehasinvitedusoverfor lunchonSunday,12thAugust,canyoumakeit?" "SureI'llringBrianandseewhathesays".Brian Thurlandanotherstrutmemberandmyselfhadbeen thinkingaboutbuildinga'planefornearlyayearand wehadsettledonaBruggerColibri.Weweregoing tovisitBrian-PerkinsinBristolwhohadbuilta Colibnwithawingfoldingmod.Bernardhadstarted onaFred,againmainlybecausethewingsfold.
TheSywellStruthasbeeninbeingforeighteen months,wemeetonthelastFridayofeverymonthat theSywellMotel.Wehavehadguestspeakersfrom aircraftbuilders,airhistoriansandaircraft renovators/repairers.Butmanyofthemeetingsare spentindiscussingwaysofgettingintotheairas cheaplyaspossible,obviouslyagroupschemewould beawayofflyingintheshortestpossibletime,but noneofushadthe£4,000orsoforaplane,sowe wereatthedo-it-yourselfstage.
haveIboughtaloadofjunk"?"Asourexperienceis verylimiteditishardforustogiveanhonest answer,"Isaid"butitdoesnotlookimpossibleto me".Theothersnoddedinagreement,"Butwhere's thefuselage"?Donsaidthathecouldn'tbringthe fuselagebecausehistrailerwasnotwideenough,the wheeltrackisnearlysevenfeet,buttherewasno damagetoitastherudderhadtakenthefullforce.
OvercoffeeDonshowedusthepaperworkthat camewithit.Theallupweightwasdownto1030 pounds.WhenIfirstthoughtofaLutonMajorasa projecttheP.F.A.officehadwarnedmeofpoor performancesoifweweretoflyitasatwoseaterwe wouldneedabiggerengine,butourfirstconcernwas findingalargeworkshop.DuringlunchJimsaidthat perhapsGeoffThomasalsooftheSywellStrutcould help,GeofffarmsrightontheedgeofSywellAirport perhapshehadabarnhecouldloanus.Jimwould askhimontheMondayandalsohewouldcontact P.F.A.Officeforanytechnicalinformationon LutonMajors.
GeoffThomaswasonlytoohappytolendusone ofhisbarnsandverykindlyhadelectricityfitted,all thatwasrequiredwasaslidingdoorandtwo windows.Afortnightlaterweallmetatthebarnto clearitout.Wewereabouttoretiretothepubwhen Dondroveupwiththefuselageontowbehindhis car,DonhadbroughtitupfromYeovilton,no wonderthetyreslookedshot!!Sowehurriedlygot herintothebarn,nowwewouldhavetogetcracking tomakethebarnsecure.BeinginthebuildingtradeI wasabletogetholdofsomescraptimber,fromthis wemadcupaslidingdoor.Bernardmadeupthe windowframesandinstalledthem,wealsomadeup someshuttersforthewindowstokeepout"uninvitedguests"whomightmanagetogetpast Geoff'sdog.
FromJohnWalkerwelearnedthatthelowall-up weightwasduetothelowpoweroftheWalter Mikronengine,ifweinstalleda90-100hpengineplus modificationstothewingstheall-upweightwouldbe increasedto1,400Ibs.sowecouldflyitasatwo seater.

Thephysicalqualitiesofaluminiumleadoneto believethatitisaneasymaterialwithwhichtowork. Thiscanbefarfromthecasewhenonewishesto worktoahighstandardofaccuracy.Manf craftsmenwouldfarratherworkinsteelthan aluminium.
Neverthelessmostofthealuminiumalloysusedin aircraftconstructionhavegoodtoexcellent machiningqualities,andlittledifficultyshouldbe foundinproducinggoodworkprovidingthecorrect toolsandpracticesareused.
Themachiningoperationsgenerallyundertakenby theamateuraircraftbuilders(particularly gyroplanes)arelimitedtodrillingandreaming,a simpletask,butoneoversizeholeinagyroplane mastcanbeanexpensivemistake.
Thephysicalandmechanicalpropertiesofthe aluminiumalloysenablethemtobemachinedat muchhigherspeedsthansteel,thespeednormally onlybeinglimitedbythepowerandspeedavailable onthemachine.Themachiningcharacteristicsofany materialaredirectlyinfluencedbythefollowing properties;thermalconductivity,thermalexpansion, modulusofelasticity,shearmodulusandcoefficient offriction.Sincethealuminiumalloyshaveahigh coefficientoffrictionwithsteel.Cuttingtools,drills andreamersinthiscase,shouldbekeptsharp,highly polishedandwelllubricatedifoneistoproducegood holes.
DRILLING
Brightdrills,notthenormaldullblackfinish, shouldbeobtained,preferablywithafastspiral.The fastspiralandnarrowlandsreduceabrasionandheat generationandpreventbuildupofmaterialonthe lipsofthedrill.Onthistypeofdrillthepointangleis moreacutethanstandard,beingIOWasopposedto 118°.
Aftermarkingthepositionofthehole,useapilot drilltostartthenormaldrillaccurately,don'trelyon thecentre'pop'mark.IuseNo.3centredrillsforthis purpose,thissizebeingsuitableforanyholeover dia.upto3/8"dia.Thistool,bytheway,hasa maximumdiameterof1/4",butdon'tbetemptedto drillallthewaythrough.Onemaygetawaywithit onceortwice,butonewillfindthatitpicksup materialonitscuttingedgesasthefulldiameteris reached,itis notdesignedtodrillholes! Havethe worksecurelyclampedduringalldrillingoperations andensurethatthedrillisrunningtrueinthechuck. Useplentyoflubricanttoprolongthelifeofthe cuttingedge,theoldcraftsmenusedparaffinon aluminium,andasaneasilyobtainablelubricantit stilltakesalotofbeating.Usethehighestspeed availableonyourdrill,wearelookingforacutting rateintheregionof300feetperminute.Toolowa cuttingspeedisoneofthecausesofthedrillpicking upaluminiumonitscuttingedges.Fora1/4"dia. drilltheRPMrequiredisgivenby:-

Onefinalpointonusingabenchdrillingmachine, ifyouhavelonghairwearahat,cap,orthewife's hairnet,andkeepyourhairunderit!,it'snojoke beingscalpedbyahighspeeddrill.
REAMING
Whydrillundersizethenreamtheholeouttosize?
Inaircraftworkweareusingourboltsnotonlyto clampthepartstogether,butalsotoaccuratelylocate theseparts,andwearetomaintainanaccuracyin holesizetoamaximumof0.001"oversizeifthisisto beachievedsuccessfully.Thisdegreeofaccuracyis notpossiblebydrillingalone.Also,adrillnever repeatedlyproducesagoodfinishedhole,therefore wereamtoproduceasnearaperfectholeaspossible. Rememberascratchorscourinsideaholecan produceafocalpointforstressconcentrations,just ascanascratchonanexteriorsurface.
Inourworkshopastandardreamershouldprove adequate,Iusehandreamersinthebenchdrill. Thesehaveataperedleadandareeasytolineupwith thepreviouslydrilledhole.Thereamermustbein goodcondition,andsharp,ifitistodoitsjob.

Ensurethatthecorrectwintergradeofgrease hasbeenusedinthecontrolandtrimsystems, enginecontrolsandlandinggear.
Theenginemayneedamanufacturer's approvedwintercoolingrestrictortoallowthe oiltobecomewarmenough.
Checkthatcontrolsurfacedrainholesare clear.Waterfreezinginsidecancausedamage tothesurfaceandseriouslyupsetthebalanceof thesurface.
Makesurethecabinheatersystemisworking properly,andthatsummercorrosionwillnot allowcarbonmonoxidefumesintothecabin. Carbonmonoxideiscolourless,odourless, tastelessandverylethal.
Ensurethat all snowandiceisclearedfrom wingsandcontrolsurfaces.Coldhandsare betterthanabrokenneck.
Duringthepre-flightinspection,checkthatthe pitotheatisworking.

StoringAircraftintheOpen
Awoodandfabricaircraftwasstoredinthe openfortwelvemonthsandduringthistimeit wasflownsome30hours.Eventuallytheowner decidedtohavetheaircraftre-coveredanditwas foundthatconsiderabledamageduetowater soakagehadoccurred,includingacomplete disintegrationoftherearsparandseparationof thefaceofthemainspar.Thesubsequentrepair isgoingtocostalotmorethanthehangarage saved.Muchofthisdamagecouldhavebeen avoidediftheaircrafthadundergonesimple maintenancecheckswhichshouldhavebeen carriedoutweeklyinviewoftheexposed conditionsbeingexperienced.Muchofthis damagecouldhavebeenavoidedbyaweekly wipedown,checksondrainholesandeffective shorttermprotection.
Ownersareremindedthatapartfromtherisk ofbreakingtheirownnecksitisaconditionof thePermittoFlythattheaircraftshallbe maintainedinanairworthycondition.Failureto complynotonlyinvalidatesthePermitbut invalidatestheinsuranceaswell.

MelbourneAirfieldwasthevenueforyetanother successfulgyroplanerallyonthe29th&30th Septemberlast,whenatotalof14gyroplanes attended.Severalgyrogliderswereactiveduring mostofSaturdayafternoon,onlystoppingtomake wayforpoweredactivitiesandthearrivaland departureoffixedwingaircraft.
AlastminuteeveningbookingofYaphamVillage Hallwasmade,atwhichMikeLangtonwasableto showhisfilmsofOskosh,Rockfordandfeatherlight activitiesintheU.S.A.Theeveningwasroundedoff withavisittoaYorkRestaurantforamealanda chat.
AfairlyearlystartwasmadeonSundaymorning, withallthegyroplanesarrivinginconveyfrom HenryBeeversestablishmentatPocklingtonwhere theyhadbeenleftovernightwiththeexceptionofthe localmachines.
But;flyingstartedlate—waitingforacrosswindof some15knotsplustoswingontotherunwaycanbe veryfrustrating,particularlywhenitdoesn'thappen, andtochangerunwaysmeansre-arrangingthewhole siteasfarascar,aircraftandgyroparkingis concerned,butitwasdone—nothingstopsthe N.G.S.atMelbourne.
Thewindwasstrongandroughanddeterredmany membersfromflyinganything,eventhegliders. Newermembershadlookedforwardtoair experienceflightsonthedualseatglidersbutittakes agoodtowcardrivertojudgehisairspeedinthose conditions,andthegliderfallsoutoftheskythat muchquickerwithtwoup.EvensoEarlTesto, GeraldTaylor,Ken&VincentWillowsandEamon Kennymanagedtokeeptheglideractivitygoingand sevenfixedwingaircraftvisitedtheeventoverthe weekend.
TheNorthernGyroplaneStrutCo-ordinator, VernonKelk,fromwhomtheabovereportcomes, hasrecentlybeenco-optedbytheExecutive Committeetorepresentgyrocopterinterestswithin theAssociation.Inadditiontodesigningandflying hisowngyroplane,Vernon'ssparetimehasbeen consistentlyusedtobringaboutanimprovementin gyroplanepublicrelationsthroughtheformulation ofusefultheory/datatohelpthewould-begyro constructor,andthroughco-ordination—initsmost meaningfulsenseaone-timegroupofisolated individualswithgyroplaneinterestsintotheN.G.S.
WewishyoueverysuccessVernon,butcannot guaranteethattheensuing'paperwork'willmake lessmessinthehomethandidyourgyroproject.
NORTHKENTSTRUT
DuringthemonthofSeptemberlast,membersof theNorthKentStrutweresaddenedbythelossof oneoftheStrut'searliestmembers,DavidGaskin.
ForDavid,whogainedhislicenceonTigersin'68, learningtoflywasbutthefirststep,andwastobe followedbymanyyearsofdevotedbutintermittent workontheconstructionofhisLutonMinorwhich hadgotalmosttothecoveringstagewhen,attheage of34hediedofCancer.
AttheStrut'sOctobermeetingfollowingthe announcementanumberofmembers,somewith projectsalreadyinhand,bandedtogetherto purchaseandcompletetheaircraftasDavidwould
havewished.Theaircrafthasbeenrelocatedina garage/hangarofthewriter'sthussharingspacewith theAircamperbutwithprospectsofanearlierF/F. Worktowardsthecompletionissharedbyother membersofthegroupasandwhentheyareableto attend,confirmationofworkinghoursisbyprior 'phonecall.Thesystemhasbeenwellreceivedby othermembers,givingasitdoes,anopportunityfor thenewerandasyetnonbuilderstogettheirfeetwet andseewhatbuildinganaeroplaneisallabout. Completionisscheduledforsummer'80and hopefullyintimefortherallywhereuponitwillbe fittedwithasuitablyengravedplaquetoperpetuate thenameofDavidGaskin,thepersonalregistration G-BDJGwillberetained.
SEVERNVALLEYSTRUT
TheSevernValleyStruthasbeeninexistencefor justayearnowandareshowingthattheycanhold theirownwhenitcomestoorganisingability.
Besidestheirseveralvisitstomilitaryairbases throughoutlastyearthestrutheldtheirfirstfly-inat DeffordonSaturday15thSeptemberwhichthey describeasamodestsuccess.Withgloriousweather thedaysawthearrivalof9visitingaircraft,themost notableamongstthembeingtheimmaculateTaylor MonoplaneG-BEVSofDaveHunter(featuredon thecoveroftheSept/OctissueafterwinningtheAir SquadronTrophyattheInternationalRallyat Leicester).OtheraircraftattendingcamefromLong Marston,StokeOrchard,Pershore,Stavertonand AshHouseFarm.
Despitethelowattendancetheorganisersare undauntedandintendtoholdasimilarfly-induring thisyear.TheStrut'sthanks,andthoseofvisiting pilotsisextendedtoClivePorterformakinghisstrip availablefortheevent.

TheStrut'sOctobermeetingwaswellatendedand wasthesourceofsomeusefulinformationimparted byEricClutton.BarryVickersbroughtalongthe rudderofhisJodelonwhichhewasabletoillustrate someoftheproblemsencounteredwhenattaching boltstoawoodenstructure.
Thediscussioncontinuedfromthistopicandledto variousaspectsofcoveringandpainting,typesof engineswerealsoraisedandproducedauseful amountofknowledgewhichissodifficulttofind outsideofhomebuildingcircles.

Aftertheinitialideaitwasthoughttobeabetteridea toenhancethevisitbyflyingacrossfromPophamto Odiham.TheRAFreadilyagreed,andsoitwasona fineAutumnFridayafternoonthatsevenaircraft gatheredatPophamtotakenineteenstrutmembers acrosstothehelicopterbase,anepicfifteenminute flight!
Thevisitwasathreehourtourofrelevantareasof interesttoPFAtypes,theitinerarybeingcomposed bythePublicRelationsOfficer.
Priortodepartureabriefingwasheldtodecideon orderofdepartureandcommunicationsaircraft,this beingnecessaryasthemilitaryairtrafficwere somewhatapprehensiveofhandlingnon-radio aircraft.Itwasdecidedtoleadoff,fastestaircraft firstsoaswewouldnotgetourselvesinatanglein Odiham'scircuit.
"Captain"Cummingswaselectedformation leaderintheultrasonic'BravoSierra',andsoweset offacrosstheHampshirecountryside.Wearrivedin suitableorderwithyourstrulybringinguptherearin GeorgeMatthews'Auster.TokeeptheRAFontheir toesChrisBaines'Austerdecidedtoturninlefthandturnsonly.Guesswhichwaywewere directed—aseriesofrighthandturns!!!
WeweremetbytheP.R.O.Fly.Lt.SteveAustinVauticr,whostartedofftheP.R.exercisebyhavinga 'happysnap'takenofourassembledselvesand machines.Afterthatitwasashortbusridetothe Stationbriefingroomwhereweweretreatedtoan illustratedtalkontheHistoryoftheRAF'spresence atOdiham.Itappearedtostartoffinthesummerof 1918onsimilarlinestoaPFAfly-in.RodPoynter devastatedStevebypointingoutthatforthe CoronationreviewatOdihamheinfactwasina participatingaircraftandtooksomeaerial'shots'of theevent.Therewasnoanswertothat!

OurnextstopwasthehelicopterOCUfortherestof theafternoon.Onceagainnoeffortwassparedto putusinthepictureontheRAF'sHelicoptertraining methods,indeedthiswascarriedoutbythe SquadronC.O.Afterthisanhourwasspentatthe 'Sharpend';inthehangarwherecrewmemberswere availabletoguideusovertheWessexandPuma.
ItwasinthehangarthatamemberofAirTraffic finallytrackedusdownforourlandingfees.Theuse ofallmilitaryairfieldshasastandardrateof£5per metrictonne.CertainStrutmemberswereseentobe tryingtheirhardesttosecretethemselvesinthe darkestcorners!
SofarbehindwereweinourschedulethatATC washavingtostayopenforus.Aftersincerethanks totheWingCommanderourbustookusbacktoour 'planes.

WehadarrivedthepreviousafternoononaNorth CentralAirlinesConvair580fromChicagovia Milwaukee.TheflighttimefromMilwaukeewas scheduledtobe20minsbutwasmadeevenmore enjoyableaswehadtoholdforafurther25min. Despitethunderyactivityintheareathetrafficon approachtoOshkoshwassoheavytonecessitate suchalonghold,howeveronarrivalyoucouldsee thereasonwhy,aircrafteverywhere!
ThisSidewinderisfinishedinoverallwhitewith blueandblacktrim.TheSidetvinderisatwoseat vonplaneofmetalconstructionandwasdeclared outstandingdesignin1969.
WestayedattheUniversitycampuswhichwas comfortableandreasonablypriced,aswerethemeals forwhichyoupurchasedaticketandateallyou wanted.TheBusserviceprovidedfortransportation toWittmanFieldwasexcellent.Wewerereturningto thecampusontheSaturdayeveningwhentheBus suddenlystopped.ThedriverhadsightedtheRutan triointhecircuitoverhead.TheyweretheDefiant flownbyBurtRutan,DickRutanintheLongEze andtheVariViggen.
Thesightofsomanyaircraftonthegroundcan onlybedescribedasamazing.Theaircraftareparked inseparateparkingareasaccordingtotheirclass.
Thefirstaircraftyouseeafterpassingthroughthe receptionareaaretheantiqueaircraftintheParkon theright.ThisparkcontainstheWacoBiplanes,the Beech17s,Stinsons,'FairchildArgus,TigerMoths, andaPussMothwhichhadbeenrestoredandcarried itsorieinalCanadianmarkings.Variousotherolder
typessomeofthemsoleexampleswereonshow,such asPipersfirstlowwingdesignthePT,whichwas builttocompeteforaUSAFrequirementbutfailed infavouroftheRyanPT-26andtheFairchild Cornell,bothofthesetypeswerepresentatOshkosh. ThereweremanyBoeingA.75Stearmanpresent. Someofthemhadbeenmodifiedtosuchanextent withenginecowlingsandcanopies,theywerehardly recognisable.

Twiceayear,agroupcallingitselftheBritish MedicalPilotsAssociationholdsameeting,usually intheU.K.LastSeptemberRNASYeoviltonwasthe venue;Icouldhardlybelievemyluckwhenthe Saturdaymorningdawnedbrightandclearwithan anti-cycloneplacedrightwhereitmattered.Itook offfromSunderlandat8.30a.m.andafterasuperb flightroutingoverGamston,Daventryand Gloucester,arrivedatYeoviltonat11.20.
Itwas S000 apparentthattheRoyalNavywere goingtoliveuptotheirreputationforhospitality, withawelcomingcommitteeofWrensonthetarmac readytolookafterthearrivalsandthebriefing officersreadytomakearrangementsformetforthe returnjourney.

Duringthecourseoftheweekend,inbetween eatinganddrinking,wehadtheopportunityto examineatclosequartersandhearabouttheR.N. versionoftheHarrier,theirLynxandWessex helicoptersandalsoseeadisplaybytheSeaFuryand SwordfishastheyreturnedfromanAirDay.It wouldseemthattheuseoftheHarrierinconjunction withthe'Ski-Jump'isgoingtobeamostimportant facetoffuturecarrieractivities.
Yeoviltonstillplacegreatfaithinfalconstokeep theairfieldclearofbirdsandreducetheriskofbird strikes.OnSundaymorningitwasrefreshingtosee natureatworkamidstsuchhightechnology. FollowingthistheMuseumwasvisitedwhich providedacomprehensivepictureofcarrierborne aircraftuptothepresentday.Thismuseumisof courseopentothepublicandnextdoortoitthe originalConcordeisbeingpreparedforpublic display.

Someyearsago,wheninCypruswiththeArmy,I cameacrossastrangeandheavy-lookingtraining aeroplaneoutsideagarageinLimassol.Itwasthe onlyYakIIIhadeverseenandwasapparentlybeing deliveredfromCzechoslovakiatoEgypt,whenitwas obligedtodiverttoCyprusandmakeaforced landing,whichcausedquitealotofdamagetothe airframe,andespeciallythepropeller.
Itappearedmostunlikelytoflyagainandrecently, Iwassurprisedtohearthatithadbeenboughtbya Britishbusinessmanandhehadovercomealmost impossibleproblemsofsparesandengineeringtoput itinflyingcondition.Iwasevenmoresurprisedtobe invitedtoflyaroundtheKingsCupAirracecourse withracingpilotTonyTrowbridgeoneweekday, beforethemajoreventonthefollowingSaturday.
TheYakwasoneofaseriesofdesignsusedfor primaryandadvancedtrainingintheSoviet countriesand,apartfromtheEgyptianexamples,I canfindreferenceonlytoasmallnumberusedin Austriaduringthe1950s.TheTypeIIwasapparently theheaviestoftheseriesandresembledtheNorth AmericanHarvardingeneraloutline,buthadmuch lesswingareaandanadditional150hp.intheradial motor,whichgaveitaverybusinesslikeandnotvery forgivingappearance.
ThisYakwasveryexpertlyrebuiltbyspecialistMr. Doug.BianchiofHighWycombe,andhehadonly thebarestofinformationtoworkfrom,aspartswere quiteunobtainableandtheRussianswouldnoteven admittohishavingtheaeroplane,farlessprovide data.Hisstoryofobtaining2propellerbladesfrom anundisclosedmilitarysourceinaneasterncountry makesinterestingreadinginitsownrightand,no doubt,suchthingsarenotcomebycheaplyor withouthazard.
Mr.Bianchifacedthedifficulttaskofsettingup carburation,controls,andinternalsystemsfromfirst principlesandonthemorningIarrived,theyhad achievedexcellentresults,despitethecomplexityof thefuelmeteringequipmentwithitsassociated mixturecontrolandsupercharger.Theywerenot quitesatisfiedthatfullpowerwasbeingdelivered
PhotoAirPortraits andsuspectedthattheenginehadbeende-ratedat sometime,butitwasdifficulttoprove.
MuchdesignseemsborrowedfromtheHarvard, aspanelsdetachedfromthefuselagesideandunder thewingsforveryeasyaccesstothesystemsandthe wholeaeroplanewasveryruggedandwellplanned. TheairintakehadthecharacteristicRussianaperture foundinmanycameras,adjustableforverycold conditions,theflapswereoperatedbycompressed air,likemostservicesandwereeitherupordown, andnotverystronglymade.Anemptymachine-gun bayinthewingwascoveredoverandfurther inspectionprovedthattheenginewasquite conventional,butdroveanaircompressortocharge areservoir,uponwhichdependedtheundercarriage andbrakes,inadditiontotheflaps.Incaseof failure,anemergencyreservoircouldbeselectedand youhopeditlasteduntilthelandingwascomplete!
Mostofthedifficultieshadcentredonairleaks robbingthesystemofpressureandsincetherewas unlikelytobeenoughairinthesystemforstarting, whichwasalsoapart,asinthemanyRenault engines,acylinderwasconnectedtoaservicingpoint intherearfuselage.
Theinteriorwaswellarranged,withgoodstrong controlsandplentyofspace,veryliketheHarvard andstartingprocedureswerealmostidentical,apart fromtherathernoisyplumbingwhichcarriedtheair supply.TonyTrowbridgeadmittedthattheYakwas stillsomethingofanunknownquantityandwewere luckythatChampionAerobaticpilotNeilWilliams hadbeenabletoflyaYakvariantinMoscowin 1968,ashisexperiencewasdrawnuponheavily.
Muchplumbingandprimingensued,asairleaks werefoundandcured,theleathersealingwashers givingsometrouble,and,witharushofair,the enormoussabre-likepropellerbladessweptround, theenginecomingtolifewithadeepcough,much smokeandaheavypulsatingrhythmcommontoall radials.
Theairpressurewasrathermarginal,butthe sourceofleaksweremostlyknownandone apparentlyflewtheYakiftheycouldbekepttoan

acceptablelevel,thustheenginewasallowedtowarm up,runupwithagloriousamountofnoiseandthe counterweightpropellersystemcheckedforfunction aspartoftheroutine.
Herewasaverypowerfulaeroplanecompared withanythingIhadseenbefore,possiblyexcepting theHarvardandTony'sdemonstrationoftaxi-ing provedittohaveaveryhardundercarriage, massivelybuilt,soonehadtobecarefulonrough grasssurfaces.Thevisionforwardwasverypoor,as thenoseiswideandonehastoweaveleftandright constantly.
Therewasanotablelackofruddertrimforso powerfulanaeroplane,butTonyassuredmethat therewasenoughrudderontake-off,otherwise,the checkswereconventional.Iwasexpectingarather carefulapplicationofpowerandsteadyacceleration, butwastoldthatHighWycombewasnotlong enoughforthatandthetake-offwastobe commencedfromthefence,wellbeforetherunway andweweretomakeuseofallofit!
Thusourfirsttake-offwastheclassic'short' variety,withmuchpowerapplied,beforereleasing thebrakes,movingquicklytoaflyingattitude,much rudder,or,Ishouldsay,ALLtherudderneededin theprocess.Theaccelerationwasfrighteningandthe Yakmissilethundereddowntherunway,which seemedalmostcompletelyusedupbeforeiteven thoughtofleavingtheground.Infact,itflewat 85kts.,veryunresponsiveatthatspeedandbecame manageableat120kts.,thenearestthingtoa recommendedclimbingspeed.HighWycombewas certainlynottheplacetotrainonthisaeroplaneand anydifficultyatallduringtake-offwouldleadsurely toanaccident.However,wewereintheairand almostimmediatelyfoundthatthehighpowersetting stilldidnotchargetheairreservoirenoughtoretract theheavy,wideundercarriage.Theredstalks remainedobstinatelyinthe'partiallyextended' positionoutonthewings,thusourspeedwaslimited to120kts.untilweworkedupenoughpressure.The leaksunfortunatelyoutpacedthecompressorandthe decisionwasmadetoland,makinguseofthe emergencyreservoir.Theflaps,whichwentdown acceptably,drainedthereservoirgreatly,the undercarriageneedingverylittleair,asitsweighthad takenitalmosttothedownposition,whereitlocked, toourintenserelief.
Thisleftthelanding,fromacircuitinwhichquite largeanglesofbankwererequiredtokeepthe airfieldinsight.Despitethelowairspeedbeing usedtheapproachwasnecessarilycurved,asitwas verydifficulttoseeclearlyahead,comparedwith mostlightaeroplanes.Wesweptdowntothethreshholdreducingspeedfrom120kts.,theYakfloated onlybrieflyandwasonthegroundwiththestick hardback,stillmovingveryfast.Theairfieldpassed atahorrifyingrate,thebrakesbeingusedasfaras possibletostopbeforegoingontothemotorwayat theoppositeend!Wemanagedit,butonlyjust,using alltherunwayandapartofthecurvedtaxi-way beforecomingtoastandstill,theemergencycylinder completelyexhausted.Fortunately,therudderwas fairlyeffectiveatlowspeeds,butthiswascertainly notabeginner'saeroplaneandanytrainingonone wouldrequireagreatdealofspace,whichtheysurely haveinRussia!
Wehadlunch,muchwiserforourexperience, whileengineerslocatedatleast3leaksandsucceeded incuringtwoofthemcompletelyandthethird acceptably.
Justonegoodleaksomewhereintheundercarriage,whichseemedmostcommon,couldrobthe flapsandbrakesofmuchairandiffacedwiththe situationwhichTonyhadjustlandedin,Iwouldopt for28LatHeathrowandintowindatthat.

TheYakwasjudgedreadyforflightagainandwe started,thundereddowntherunwayand,withrelief, sawtheundercarriageindicatorsrunthefulldistance to'Lockedup'.Nowwecouldshowourpaces.The Yakiscertainlynotaslowmoveranditssmallwing area,highloadingandpowertakesitwellbeyondthe Harvardclass,nearertothatofthewartime HurricaneMk.1,soitisamostrealisticfighter trainer.Thecontrolsreallyareadelightathigher speedsandmakeforamanoeuvrableplatform, whichisneverthelessfairlystableandagood mountingforarmament.

WhilsttheYakcannotbecalledveryeconomic,it certainlygoesplacesandasensibleRPMsetting, boostandmixturesettingssurelyresultsinauseful range,despiteitsnotverygreatfuelcapacity.Thus, asatrainingaeroplane,itiscertainlyintheadvanced class,demandingagoodlevelofjudgementand plentyofspaceforthestudenttowork,butitisan enormouslyinterestingaeroplane,conventionalin everyfeature,welldesigned,exceptfortheprobable weaknessesoftheairsystemandathoroughly representativetypeinitsclass.
ThoseusedtotheHarvardwouldbeableto graduatetoitwithoutmuchdifficulty,providing theywerenotinahurrytotakeliberties,butone alwayswalksawayfromtheYakwithadeeprespect, asIdid,onouruneventfulreturntoWycombe,this timewithplentyofairpressure.
TheRussianshaveneverreallyforgiventheowner forpaintingalargeredstaronthewings,butthey lendtherightatmosphereandInotethattheNATO designationforthetypeis'Moose',averysuitable choice.Itreallyisatough,determinedbullofan aeroplane,suretotrainapilotinthosequalitiesof strictobservanceoftherulesandahealthy discretion.Onthesportingside,itisarealfun machine,fortheexperienced,itsperformancea breathtakingeducationandaracingtypewhichis surelynoteasytoawardahandicapintheKingsCup event.
Afterflyingit(sufficiently!),mysecretambitionis togoformynextinstructor'srenewaltesttoa horrifiedexaminer,hopefullyoutofhisdepthatthe firstsightoftheYak,andbeabletoflyitbetterthan hecan!
WishfulthinkingI'msorrytosay,buttheYak doesgreatthingsfortheimaginationandremainsthe mosteducationalaeroplaneIhaveyetfoundtodate. I. Foreword:Someofourhome-builtdesignsare approaching40yearsofageanditisreallytimethat weintroducedanewlook.ThereforetheP.F.A.now invitenewdesigns,usingthefollowingguidelines:Singleortwoseat. Horsepower125maximum. Weight1750lbs.maximum. Spanfolded7' 6' maximum. Rateofclimb400fpmminimum. Range250statutemilesminimum. Aircrafttobeeasilyroadtransportableandflyable withinmins.withouttheneedforadualinspection ofcontrols.

2.TheDesignSub-Committeeagreedontwo furtheradditionstotherulesasdescribedabove,and oneamendmentasfollows:-
Thepurposeofthecompetitionistoencourage newdesigns.Accordingly,thecompetitionisnow opentoanyaircraftofadesignwhichhasflown before1stJuly,1976,(thisdatebeingthatonwhich theruleswerefirstformulated).
ThecompetitionisopenonlytoNationalsof EuropeanEconomicCommunityCountries(EEC), whoarefullypaidupmembersofthePFAfromthe timeofmakingtheirentryuntilthetimeoffinal judgingoftheentries.Failuretoremainamemberin goodstandingwilldisqualifytheentrant.
Itisintendedthatthedesigncompetitionshall beanon-goingeventwhichwillbejudgedannuallyat theP.F.A.RallyheldinJuly.Anyentryshouldbe forwardedtothedesignsub-committeenotlaterthan the1stApril,togetherwithdrawingsorsketchesof theproposedaircraft,accompaniedbysufficient detailtosatisfythemthattheproposalmeetsthe requirementsofthecompetitionasdescribedabove.

DearSir, Ihear,withsomedismay,thatfuel(aircraft)isto increaseinpriceyetagain.
Itseemstomethatinaviationweareatthethin endofaverynastywedge.Weareforcedbyour masterstousethe100LLbrewinordertostaylegal andinsured.Thismeansthatthemakersareina totalmonopolypositionbecausewehavebylawto usetheirproduct.Hencewhatevertheychargewe havetopay.
Apartfrompriceconsiderationsthishasbrought aboutthesituationwheresomeaircraftareflyingon fuelwhichisunsuitableandshortensenginelife.Not bad,whenyouthinkthatthisisbroughtaboutbyour legislatorswhoseinterestinsafetyisparamount.
Nowthereareoneortwothingswhichstandout aboutaircraftenginesandthefirstisthatevery exampleweusecanbetracedbacktoapre-war design,(theonlyoriginalthoughtrecentlyproduced theTiarawhichishardlyforus).Thusthesecrude engines,byto-day'sautomotivestandards,willrun onjustaboutanypetrolofasuitableoctanerating.
WhatIwouldlikearenon-politicalanswerstothe followingquestions,bearinginmindthattheaverage lightaircraftdoesnotoftengoaboveabout3000feet andneednotbeleftforageswithfuelinthetanks.
I.WhatisthedifferencebetweenaVWengined aircraftflyingat2000feetandaVWBeetlebeing drivenacrosstheDerbyshiremoorsataboutthesame height?

Weallknowaboutwhatprobablyhappensinthe sticks.Thelargerthepricedisparitybetweenaviation andcarfuelthemorelikelypeople(notusofcourse) arelikelytousethelatter.

Thefundamentaldifferencebetweenaviationand automobilefuelsisthattheaeronauticalfuelistoa fixedstandardagainstwhichenginesaretestedwhen theyareassessedforratedpower.Thisstandardhas finelimitsofleadcontent,etc.whichmustbe maintainedbeforethefuelisreleased.
Automobilefuelisonlymanufacturedtothefuel costspecificationandmaybechangedwithout notice,indeeditisusualpracticeforthefuelbuild-up tovaryaccordingtothetimeofyearthefuelis manufactured.Thisisdonetopromoteallthose likelyextraattractionswhichoneseesonTV commercialssuchasimprovedstartinginWinter, betterfueleconomy,etc.Theresultisthatthese additiveScanmakematerialdifferencetothe volatilityofthefuel,andalsototheamountofnoncombustibleswhichareliabletobefoundinthe supply.Whilsttheseareaddedwithverygoodreason bythefuelcompany,theymaynotbeentirely suitableforaircraftengines.
Afurtherpointisthattheautomobilefuelis designedforarapidturnoverduetohighuseofthe vehicleunlikethesituationthatexistswithaircraft.

Manyaircrafthavelargetankscapableofcarrying considerablequantitiesoffuel.Thesetanksmay remainpartiallyfilledforconsiderableperiods,and itisduringtheseperiodsthatgumdepositscan separateoutfromthefuelscausingproblemsata laterdate.

Inthesupersonicseventies,chewinggumisno longeranessentialitemofaircraftspares,butearly aviatorsneededmorethancourageandan adventurousspirit–theyneededingenuityaswell.In theearlyyearsoftheahmailservice,currently celebratingitsdiamondanniversary,chewinggum andinsulatingtapeusedtogethermadeanexcellent stop-gap—literally—forleaksinwater-cooled engines.
Butinventivenessdidnotstopattemporary repairs.InthethirtiesaGerman,HerrZucker, successfullyexperimentedwithmail-carryingrockets firedfromtheSussexDowns,butlateralmostblew himselfupattemptingtofirearocketcarrying4,800 lettersfromHarristotheIslandofScarpintheOuter Hebrides.
Evenbeforetheintroductionofapublic internationalmailservicein1919,peoplehadbeen experimentingwithlettersbyballoonandeven pigeonpost.IntheFranco-PrussianWarof1870, photographedmessagesweresentbypigeonfrom TourstoParis.
In1911,thecoronationofGeorgeVwasmarked byanairservicebetweenHendonandWindsor, whichcarriedspecialpicturepostcardsinenvelopes andalsoacceptedlettersforanydestinationwhich wereincludedintheordinarymailsoncompletionof theflight.Allinall,itcarriedabout900Ibs.ofmail.
Butitwastheenormousdevelopmentofaviation duringtheFirstWorldWarthatmadetheideaofan internationalairmailserviceafterthewarseemnot onlypossiblebutlogical.AtthePeaceConferencein Paris,anAirConventionwassignedby26countries. Amongotherthingsitagreedthataircraftshould keeptotherightinpassingeachother,andthat 'planesshouldalwaysgivewaytoairshipsand balloons.
Thefirstregularairmailserviceopenedbetween LondonandParisattheendof1919.Itwas expensiveat2/6d.anounceandatfirstonly45 lettersadayweresentbythenewservice.Twoyears laterthefeewasdownto2d.andthebusinessof sendinganairletterwassimplifiedbythe introductionofbluelabelsstucktotheletterto distinguishitfromordinarymail.
LaterthePostOfficealsointroducedbrightblue pillarboxesforairmail,andbluevanstocollectit.
ImperialAirways,formedin1924fromthree companies,extendedtheairroutesbeyondthe continenttoAfrica,IndiaandRussia–butnot withoutdifficulty.'Planesstillcouldnotflyatnight and,toalesserextent,werestillsubjecttothe vagariesoftheweather.Onthefirstflightsbetween CairoandBaghdad,the'planesflewinpairs–partly forprotectionandpartlytomakesurethemailswent onifone'planebrokedown.Theweeklyairmailto

Meanwhiletheairmailservicewasgrowing rapidly.By1930,airmailtraffictotalled30tonsa year;by1935itwas187tons.Aftertheintroduction ofthe'all-up'schemein1938,theamountofairmail doubledin12monthsandthendoubledagain.
Previousairmailrateshadvariedwidelyaccording todistanceandweight,butthe'all-up'systemmeant aflatrateforallEuropeandestinationsofl'2d.for halfanounce,anditalsomeantthatalllettersto Europewentbyairasamatterofcourse.

Bythelate1930s,nightflyinghadbecome commonplace.Passengerssleptaboard,but accordingtocompanyarrangementsofthetime,the planeslandedintheeveningfordinnerwhilethe chairswerestowedawayandbunksfittedintheir places.
TheoutbreakoftheSecondWorldWarmeantthe endofthe'all-up'systemforthetimebeing—butnot PopularFlying,January-February,1980
theendofairmail.
Airgraphs,whichwerebasicallyletters photoeraphedontofilm,wereintroducedtosave weighton'planesloadedwithvitalcargo.Used initiallyfortheForcestheyweresosuccessfulthat theywerealsousedforcivilianmail.Afilmof1,600 lettersweighedonlyfiveouncesandcouldbepoked intoanyoddcorner,whereas1,600letterswould havefilledtwosacksandweighedabout701bs.The drawback,ofcourse,wasthelackofprivacy,but despitethismorethan350millionairgraphswere sentinthefouryearsthattheservicewasavailable.
In1942thenow-familiarairletterformwas introducedandmadesuchinroadsontheairgraph service,thataireraphswerediscontinued.Theair letterformhassincebeenadoptedbypostal administrationsthroughouttheworldandinBritain todayaccountsforoneinfourofallairletters handledeveryyear.
NinepercentofBritain'sinlandfirstclassmailis alsocarriedbyair.AspecialRoyalMailairlifthas beenintroducedatLiverpool'sSpekeairportserving initiallyBristol,Newcastle,GlasgowandNorwich. Thenewairlinkswillovercomepoorrailconnections andgiveabetterserviceforcustomersonthefrinee ofthepostalnetwork.
Thenumberofairparcelshasalsogrownsteadily. Nowadaystheairmailparcelserviceisbigbusiness withmanyfirmsusingthespecialratesavailable. Airmailgenerallyisgrowingwhilesurfacemailis decreasing.Theadventofcommercialsupersonic aircraftmeansinevitablythatfuturetrendswillbe towardsexpressairmailanddiversificationof servwes.
Sincethoseearlydayswhenlettersliterallyrodein thecockpitwiththepilot,airmailhasreallytaken offandtodaytheskywouldseemtobethelimit.
AirmailbeingloadedontoaBritishCaledonian707.Betweenthem,BritishCaledonianandBritishAirways handlenearlyalltheoverseasairmarlfromEngland—nearly500 itemsayear,eitherinbagsliketheseor containers.
