Onahot,calmsummereveningwedrovedownthe IndianHeadHighwayinanairconditionedCapri_ Fortunatelytherewerenotraffichold-upsasevena shorttimeontick-overcausedtheenginetooverheat duetothepowerconsumptionoftheconditioning unit,2000ccisabitsmallforsuchacad
Weleftthemainroadforacountryroadthrough densewoodland,tocomesuddenlyoutofthetreesinto theparkingareaattheairfield.Thisconsistsofasingle pavedstripwithterminalbuilding.'Thangarsand tiedownsatoneend.Thehangarsarebigenough totakeoneaircraftandallowareasonableamountof spacetoworkonitInthehangarwewenttothere arethreeaircraftoccupyingthespacenormallytaken upbyjustaBreezy.UnderonewingisConnieMarsh's SmithMiniplaneandundertheotherDaveGrove's WittmanTailwind.
TheBreezyisafrighteningideaforthosewhomeet itforthefirsttime.Along,shallowfuselageofwelded

WacoCJCfinishedinred,blackand while
tube,withnocoveringatall,carriesaCubundercarriage,wingandtailunitwithapusherengine carriedhighaboveitonstruts.Pilotsandpassengers sitoutinfrontofthewingwithnoprotectionfromthe slipstream,butthepassengersareluckyandifthepilot hasbroadshoulderstheycancrouchbehindhimin somesortofshelter.LikeamotorbiketheBreezyis greatonhotsummerdays,butincold,wetweatheris bestleftinthehangar. I sawthisBreezyaboutaweek laterbattlingitswayagainstagustywindabovethe PennsylvaniaTurnpike,followingtheroadthrough theAppalachianMountainsandbeingtossedaboutin theturbulence.Formileswerantogetheruntilroad worksslowedourcarandhewasabletooverflythe lowerspurs,toreachOshkoshadaybeforeus.
'Flighty',ConnieMarsh'sMiniplane,wascompletedbyherin1967.SheracedatRenoandvarious otherplaces,flyingrightacrossAmericainthelittle singleseatertodoso,'Cousin'Connieisnotonlyan excellentaircraftbuilder,sheknowshowtoflythem too.TwiceshehasflowntoOshkoshandeachtime tooksecondprizeforhome-builtsintheAC-EAA FlightRally.AsuccessortoFlightyisnearingcompletionwhichhasaCassutt-likefuselagewithrather highaspectratiobiplanewings.

TheTailwind,althoughhome-built,wasnotbuilt byDavebutwasboughtcomplete.Hewaskeento fulfilapromisemadetwoyearsbeforeintheUKthat I wouldflyinitif lever managedtogettoWashington, astheonlyTailwind I hadseenuptothenwas'YDU atSywell,and I hadnoideawhattoexpect.The amountofroomfortwopeoplewasamplealthough admittedlyneitherDavenormyselfareheavilybuilt. Thepanelappearedtobewellstockedwithinstruments andaradiowasmountedabovethecentre,withthe taildowntheviewwaspoorbutonaccelerationthe liftedtailimprovedthevisibilitytonearperfectin mostdirections.

Weclimbedawaysouthwardsandsoonreached about1500ft.,cruisingatwellover100mph,turning WestweflewtowardsthePotomacRiverwhichatthis pointisaboutthreemilesacrossandlookslikethe sea.NeartheVirginiashoreweturnednorthinthe directionofWashingtonandagoldensun,turningback acrossthcriverthehazylandscapeandglittering amberwatergavewaytoclearvisibilitydownsun. Afterafewsteepturnsoverthecoasttakingpictures throughtheroofwindows,weflewbacktowards Pomonkey.Thestripstoodoutclearlyinthewoods andwesoonjoinedthecircuitfittinginwithaCherokeeandaCitabriadoingtouchandgo'sorwhatever Americanscallthem.
Fromthecircuit I sawseveralaircrafthiddenbehind the'T'hangars.AmongtheusualSpainCansthere wereafewinterestingtypes;mostimpressivewasa WacoCJC.Thisbeautifulbiplaneappearedto bein perfectconditionandfliesfrequently. It seemedapity thatsuchanaircraftshouldbetieddownoutside ratherthanhangared.NearbywasaCougar,alsotied down,thoughtothedisgustofmyAmericanfriends, I failedtoseeanygreatdifferencebetweenaCougar andaTailwind.Surroundedbytallweedsandgrass wereafewaircraftshelteredbyacanopyopenatthe sides.TheseincludedtwoTaylorcraft,anAeronca ChiefandChampbut,ofmoreinterest,aMonocoupe. Thiswasinasadconditionbutwiththepresententhusiasmforrestoration I wouldhavethoughtsomeonemighthavedonesomethingaboutitbynow.
OnthedrivebacktoWashington I heardofpast attemptstoplanatourofEuropeintheTailwind.Of coursethecostofshippingN61.2IUacrosstheAtlanticdefeatedallschemesbutthedreamthatitmight have visitedSywellisinteresting;thefrustrated plannerscausedverylittlestirwhentheyturnedupat Sywellinmycar.

PFA439One of theoldestsUrvivingTurbulentsin theU.K.isG-APOL.Itstartedlifeinthe late I 950sunderthewingoftheVintage AircraftAssociation.andPeterHouston: thefuselageandtailassemblyitisbelievedwerebuiltbytheSaxonFlying Club(nowdefunct?)inCardiffIt emergedasaD.36variantatRedhillin 1962,andsincethenhaspassedthrougha varietyofhands,thelatestownerbeing A.R.LeithofForfar.Angus.towhomit wasregisteredlastOctober.

Enapreviousarticle,fmentionedthatIconsidered theRotordynebladestobethebestcurrentinvestment ifyouhappentobelookingforfactory-built,metal rotors.Sincewritingthat,wehavenowhadachance toair-testthefirstsettoarriveintheU.K.Tshould perhapsmentionherethatonerespectinwhichMessrs. Rotordynedidfalldownwasinthepacking;two of thesixrotor-bladesintheconsignmentweredamaged intransitThiswasdamagewhichwouldhavebeen avoidedbyabetterandstrongerformofpackaging. Wehavetakenthematterupwiththesuppliersand fullyexpectittobecorrectedbeforeanymorerotors areconsignedtothetendercareoftheairlinefreightmen!
ThcreasonImentionthisdamageisthatitisvery easytogetintoaposition,withair-freight,whereyou cannotclaimfromtheairlineorthesupplier.Imyself lostoutheavilyonsuchatrans-Atlanticshipment. Whathappensisthis:thegoodsarriveat,say.Heathrow,wheretheyarehandledbyanagent-youdon't gettheopportunitytohandlethemyourself—andyou finallygetdeliveryeitherbycollectionorbythevan droppingthematyouraddress.Inbothcases,youwill bediscouragedfrominspectingthegoodsatthetime becauseno-onewantsyoutodetainthem.(Icollected mygoodsfromPan-AntatHeathrow).Ifyousignfor thegoods,youwillprobablyfindthatyouaresigning fortheirreceiptingoodorder, if youevengettimeto readtheadvicenotes!Then,whenyoucometounpack thebox,youmayfindthatdamagehasoccurred. Somuchforthatlittledigression;nowbacktoour theme.Twopilots,MontyCurzonandJohnKitchen. haveflownwiththeRotordynebladesandseparately commentedthattherewasatleasta20to30"„improvementinperformance,suchasrateofclimbfor instance.Theweatherwastoodiabolicalforanyprolongedtests,thesewillhavetowaitforbetterweather, butthereisnodoubtthattherotorismuchbetterthan anyofitscommercialcounterpartsatcomparative prices.(R.O.C.hasbeenmeasuredat600fpmonthe Cricket,sincewritingtheabove—P.C.TT.
Thereasonfortheimprovedperformanceliesnot intheaerofoilsection,Ithink,becauseitisreallynot spectacularlydifferentfromtheothersusedonStanZee.KirkwoodandBensenrotors,forexample.The improvementstemsfromtheverysmoothexterior surface.Thebladesaremadebywrappingaskin— about20swa,ataguess—aroundanextrudedspar, bondingthetwotogetherunderpressureandheat. Thetrailingedgesaresimilarlydrawntogetherand
bonded.Theadhesives,preparationsandtreatments areidenticaltothosedevelopedforuseonhelicopter blades,whichhavetosurviveamuchmoresevere loadingthanweareabletoproduceinnormaluseof agyroplane.
Atthelastreckoning,CampbellGyroplanesquoted thepriceofthesebladesasintherangeof£2204230, whichisaboutE30-f40lessthantheBensenrotor.
Rotordynealsomakesomenicerotor-headsand CampbellsshouldbeabletoquoteUKpricessoon.
CRICKETPLANS
Igetafairnuifiberofrequestsforplansforthe CampbellCricket.famafraidthattheansweris alwaysinthenegativeforvariousreasons.Firstly,the plansweredrawnwithagroupoffactoryworkersin mind,whowerealreadyveryfamiliarwiththemanufactureofthestandardBensen138.Secondly.the materialswereavailableatCampbellAircraftin appropriateforms,alongwithmanyspecialsmall parts.Thirdly,majoritemssuchastherotor-heads weresub-contractedandthedrawingsproducedto suitthecontractor.
Whatthisalladdsupto.fortheamateur.isthatthe plansareverylackinginthesortofdetailsandinstructionalnoteswhichhemusthave.Tobringthe drawingsandinformationuptothestandardwhichI. asPFAadvisorongyroplanes,couldhappilypasson toourmembers,wouldrequireagreatdealoftime andeffortwhichIcannotspareatpresentiByilihthee timecandevotesithletimetothematter,t, toolate,becausethestocksofmaterialsarealmost gonenowanyway.SoanydrawingwhichIdowill havetobeonacraftwhich can bebuilt.
TRAINING
fwishIcouldreportthatthisperennialproblemhas beensolvedbutithasnot.Thatisnottosuggestthat no-onecaresaboutit:anumberofpeoplearetrying tofindwaysandmeanstoprovidecompetenttraining. Withoutit,thegyromovementmaydieinBritain. Someenthusiastswill,nodoubt,buildmachinesand creepouttoteachthemselves.Iftheysucceed,howare theytoclaimtheyweretaughtandwhoistoexamine themwithaviewtoissuingalicence?Questions, questions.questions!
ThereisaslimchancethatthesituationwillimproveinthenortherlypartsofBritain.Therearetwo competentgyropilotswhoareverykeentoobtain instructor'sratings,knowingthemboth,Fcanseeno reasonwhytheyshouldnotdososuccessfully.
Iamstillgettingasked if trainingtakesplaceat Membury.Theshortanswerisno.Theenvironmentally-mindedgentlemanwhoboughttherunwaysis havingthemtornup,soonemaysafelyassumethat nomoregyropilotsaregoingtobetrainedthere.
GYROGLIDINGFORFUN
Withallthenonsenseoveraviationfuelandthe generalinterestinhang-gliding,etc.,itisclearthat peoplearelookingforsimplerpursuitsintheflying world.Anythingwhichgetsone'sfeetoffterrafirma isnowreceivingasecondlook.Onthatbasis,Icannot seewhymorefolkdonothaveagoatgyrogliding.It isnotadifficultmattertobuildagyroglider.Even rotorbladesarebynomeansasdifficulttoconstruct assomefellowsseemtothink.Takensteadilyand systematically,itiseasiertobuildarotorthanawing ortailplane.
Havingbuiltaglider,onecanlearntotlyitbyusing itasa'boom'traineruntilsomepartialskillinflying isdeveloped.Onemaythenproceedtoashortrope and,finally,alongerone.(Neveruseanylonrope;it tendstosetupnastyoscillationsveryeasily,usually endinginabentgyro!)A'Boom'trainerissimplya Bensenwithanextendedkeelwhichsitsstraighton thecar'stow-hitchball.Becauseofitsmethodof attachmenttothecar,thecraftcanonlybeswung about30toleftandright.Similarly,ifthetyropulls backthestickfully,heliftsoffthegrounduntilthe cantingoftheairframedepitchestherotorandthat setshismaximumheight,typicallywiththemain wheelsabouttwofeetofftheground.
BecausethisformofflyingneedsnoARBinspectionsorpilot'slicence,itisattractiveasafamily sportintheUSA.GeoffWhatley'sson,andmyown son,learnedtoflygyroglidersbeforetheywereoutof theunder-13eleven!Whynothaveago?

NorthofPortsmouth,anaerodromewaspurchased byamanwhointhepasthashintedatanaffinitvwith older,interestingandexcitingaeroplanes—PFA-style aeroplanesinfact,butnowhavingcontrolofhisown aerodrome,andhousingtherehisownvariedfleetof aeroplanes,heismakingitquiteobviousviarestrictive tactics,landing,parkingandhangarfees,radioonly andgeneralunpleasantness including adictumthat Mirk coveredaeroplaneswerenolongerwelcomeas residents.thatthisishisaerodrome,andallresidents whichappeartobeinthe"acceptable"bracketmay onlystayundersufferance!Whereelseshouldthey go
Shouldtheybeconsideringgoingalittlefurther northtoWhiteWalthamwhereTwasoncetoldthat hangaringaTigerMoththerewasquiteimpossible toquotethemanager:-Wewon't hare oldstuff likethathere butthatwhentheTigerwas

...Aliyes!WhiteWaltham!Theaerodromewas vacatedbytheRAFaboutayearago,andeversince thattimetherehavebeenhystericaloutburstsby varioussectionsofthecommunity,concerningthe fourhundredplusacresthatmakeupthesite.The localnewspapershavebeenfulloftheactionandthe completeignoranceofmanylocalmouthpieceshas beengivenfullvent.OneladyCouncilmemberwas quotedassayingthattheaerodromeisusedregularly bya32seaterjet.Thatstatementiscompleterubbish, butitwasputintoprint,andtheeffectcouldhavebeen toturnthelocidresidentsagainstretainingtheairfield forcivilflying.Fortunately,thelocalsknowit's rubbishtoo,andhavereactedviolentlytosuggestions thattheaerodromeshouldbeturnedintoaCouncil estate,industrialwarehousingorsomethingofeach.
Fortunately,theBerkshireCountyCouncilhaveput offadecisiononthefutureoftheaerodromeuntil afterthcCAAReportispublished.Butopinionisstill verymixed,withfeelingsthatthesiteshouldperhaps becomeagolfcourseorreturnedtoagriculturein wholeorinpart.TheyareconcernedthattheCAA reportwillcomeout too stronglyinfavourofthesite becomingafullblown airpon, with(theythink)concreterunways.afreightterminus,andinclusivetour trafficrunningallthroughthenigln.WithHeathrow 15milesawaythere'shardlyachanceofthathappening!
Obviously,thecaseforretainingWhiteWaltham reliesveryheavilyontheoverallplanningscenefor aviationintheSouthEast,andletushopethatthe CAAReportisrealistic,asTamsureandhopeitwill be.Oneenlightenedmemberofthecouncilhasalready expressedhimselfbysayingthatiftheaerodromeis shut,thentheCouncilmustconsiderwheretheycould providesimilarfacilitiesforthosewhoneedthem. Excellent,andIbelievethat'sthefirsttimeEveever seensuchasentimentexpressed,butsurelythe answeristoleavetheaerodromewhereitisandallow aeroplanestousethefacilitieswhichhavematured overtheyears

AsaBerkshireratepayeractuallylivinginthecircuit ofWhiteWaltham,yetbyforceofcircumstance keepingmyaeroplaneatanaerodromeseventymiles away,andatthesametimewatchingtheerosionof aerodromefacilitiesinthispartoftheworld,itwillbe adisastertoallow any authoritytoclose anyexisting flyingsites.BothCAAandmoreparticularlythePEA shouldbeintherefightingagainsttheincredibleantiaviationlobbywhichpollutesmostlocalauthorities inthissectorofthecountry.Thereisnopointwhatsoeverinwavingtheflagofencouragementforthe constructionandpurchaseofaircraftbyourmembers andfriends,ifthereisnohometogoto.

Oneoftheproblemsofflyingtodayisfirstfindinga fieldtoflyinto,rentinasameandtryingnottodisturb thelocals.
Let'ssayyouareblessedwithluckandmanagetodo this—wherenowdoyouputtheaircraft?Ifmetal,not muchofaproblem,butwoodandcanvas--well!!
Ihavemanagedtofindarunway,East-Westonly. justafewpotholes,plentyofwildlife(fourlegged variety)andawayfromanytown,justanicevillage andajovialpubcrowd,sonowIhadtositandplana hanaar.
Myfirstthoughtswere—plentyofsteelgirders. heavytimbers,corrugatedsheet,concretefloorandthe cost!!ShouldIgiveupflying?Thethoughtoccurred tome—myaircraftwasnotbuiltwithanyofthese thingsanditwassubjecttoagreaterstressandstrain thananyhanaarwouldbe,soalightconstructionwas borninmymind.
ThehanaardesignwastobelikeaT,firstofall whatsizeexteriorplysheetscouldLget.Theseturned outtobe6'x4'xl"sothepanelsforthesidesweretobe 6:x6'i.e.13,-sheetsperpanel—nowaste.Next,whatto fastenthepanelsto,hereagaincostinmindIdecided tousecheap4"xl"fencerails.
Firsttheframewasnailedtogetheredgeupwitha railinthemiddle,thetoprailwaskept4"down,i.e. 5'8"toholdrooftruss,thenthe65(4and6'x2'were dulynailedtothis,nails6"apart,thisnowwasthe pattern—eighteenweremade,butforthereargable thesetwopanelswerecutdownto61x4'each.
Afoundationofcementandonecourseofbricks waslaid,twodoorposts-6"x4"wereletintothe groundandconcretedin320"apart.Thefirstpanel wasboltedtothelefthandsidepost,thesecondpanel wasboltedtothefirstpanel—onesidenow120"long. Thenext6'0"panelwasfixedatrightanglesandthe fourthpanelboltedtoit.Movingnowtotherear sectiontwofurtherpanelswereaffixedtothelatterand Ihadnowonesideerected24'0"long.Thegable panelswerefixedandthesameoperationwascarried outfortheotherside.Myhangarwasnow32'0"wide byITO"andthetailsectionmeasured1TO"x8'0".The aircrafthadtobedrawninbackwards(watchthetail wheel).
Nowtheroof—longsparsareaproblem,butnot anymore.Firstthe4"xl"waslaidflatonconcrete startineattheends4"andariseinthemiddleupto 18"high,spacerswerefixedatanangleforthrustand sag—sayfourforeachtruss,thenthisareawas coveredwithplybutnotall,saytwothirdsafter nailinaply,trusswasturnedoverandplyfixedon oppositeside—resultoneridgedtruss32'0"long.
Fourweremade,thefirstwascoveredcompletein ply,theywerespacedat4'0"intervals,inbetween werefixedspacerboxesoutof2"x".Theseheldthe trussesrigid,thetrussendswereheldbymetalbrackets thenthewholewascoveredby 4" plyor±',"Weyroc, mineralrooffingfeltwaslaidandthejointswere coveredby2Pia"striplaths.Thesectionwherethetail andpartfuselagewashousedcouldhavealean-toroof orsmallertrussescouldbemade—therooflinewould thenbelevel.

DurinehisfouryearsatLATCChebecamevery popularwithallhisOperationsandTels.colleagues andespeciallywithP.P.L.holdersonthefivewatches. Hewillberememberedforhismanyattemptstobuild andflyalightaircraft.Severalflyinggroupswere formedbutwithpromotionsandpostingshefoundit verydifficulttomaintaingroupsofP.P.L.holders.He mademanyplansandinvestedaconsiderableamount ofmoneyinhisBD-5andWhittmanTailwindprojects.Despitehishardwork,theseprojectswere eventuallydroppedinfavourofaready-madePiel Emeraudeaircraftwhichhelocatedandoftenflewat BigginHill,andthewriterwasinvolvedwithDavein thepurchaseandoperationofthisaeroplane.His dreamswerenottoberealised.
DavePerrywasneverhappyontheground,Ilewas onlyinhiselementwhenairbornefromBigginHillat thecontrolsofhisfavouriteCherokee140orthe Emeraudeandhewouldtalkatlengthabouthis frequenthopsacrosstheChannelforhis"DutyFree's" (SpiritsandCigarettes).

Thinkbacktotheearlythirtiesandpictureinyour mindthosemajestichi-planeswiththeirstrutsand flyingwiresthatgracedtheskiesalongsidemonoplaneswithbracedwingsandthenlookattheaccompanyingrarephotographofthesleekMosseraftofthe sameperiod.Aneatlycowled95h.p.PobjoyNiagra pulledthisstreamlinedbeautyalongwithatopspeed of130m.p.h.whileitssmoothcantileverwingswere fittedwithflapsthatallowedatouchdownspeedof only36m.p.h.QuiteacontrasttotheD.H.60Moths oftheday,andallcredittoitsdesignersandbuilders, thefiveMossbrotherswhoconceivedandflewthe prototypebetween1934-35.DesignatedtheMosscraft MA-I,thefirstmachinewasregisteredG-AESTand judgingbythesmilesontheirfacesthebrotherswere wellpleasedwiththeirexcitingaeroplane.Indeed, severalothermodelswerebuiltoverthenextfewyears andthelaterMA-2waspoweredbyanin-lineCirrus Minor90h.p.engineasasingleseaterracer.

ArecentinclusionintheSpecialCategoryisthat veryraretail-wheelwoodenmystery,theSOKOLM IC.Ithasbeenaroundsince1947andhasalwaysbeen thesoleexampleintheU.K.
Thechancetosampleitcametomeonedaywhen ownerDickPhillipsaskedmehowmuchIthoughtit wasworth,soadrivedowntoThruxtonwasindicated toprobeitindepth.
Itturnedouttobeasurprisinglycleanaeroplane, withonly460hrs.sincenew,alwayshangared,radio. fullpanelandnightlighting.Thcundercarriageretractedrearwardsmanually,asintheSud-Est. Horizon,sotherewasverylittletogowrongwiththat andthefactthatithadhadveryfewownerssuggested thatitmustbeaverysatisfactorydesign.
Thegluewasofthenon-deterioratingvariety, soundlycheckedinitsrecentCofAandnoripples wereapparentintheexterior.Thispromisedtobefun, withaprobablefastcruisingspeedfromthe105h.p. WalterMinormotor,reckonedtoconsumeonly4; gallonsperhour.Tankageof22gallonsgaveitanice ranee,soitwasaniceall-roundtouring/training package,andprobablymuchunder-ratedintheU.K.
Primingwasdonefromareservetankbehindthe engine,bypumpinthecockpitandthestarterwasan ingeniousinertiadevicewhichengageditselfautomaticallywhentheelectricswounditupanddisengagedwhentheengineran.
Althoughalittlenoisy,theWalterofferingwas smoothenoughandtaxi-ingprovedthattherudder shouldbeusedtothefull,butacentrallymounted brakelevergavedifferentialcontrolveryeffectively.
Checksareveryconventionalandthefirsttake-off wasdirectlyintowindwithplentyof room forerror. Actually,theSokolacceleratedverycleanly,requiring aboutthesamerudderactionastheAusterseriesand wasairborneatjustover40m.p.h.withIststageoF nap,climbingrespectably.
Althoughithasacontrolwheelinsteadofthe expectedstickforitsvintage,theaileronsweresensitive througharod-systemandallcontrolsgaveapleasant actioninastableairframe.Useofflapproducedall thedesirablepitchcharacteristicsforatrainer,alotof flapbeingavailableforashortlandingandtheundercarriagealsogaveamoderateamountofpitchinthe rightdirections.ON.erall,thetrimcopedverywellwith allcombinationsofthese.

Thepropellerwasfairlycoarse,notthatthisgavea badrateofclimb,andwitheverythingcleanedup,the Sokolreallycameintoitsown,asteady120m.p.h. beingavailableat2100r.p.m.,sometwo-thirds throttle.Inthisarea,itwasaboutasgoodasaJodel Ambassadeurandratherbetterthanthestandard Cherokee.Inthespecialcategory,itisa2seater,but originallydesignedwith3,whichappliesifaGPCofA issought.
Inthelowerrangeofspeeds,aslowsafecruisewas foundat60m.p.h.andaround1600r.p.m.anditwas stillflyingat40m.p.h.withafairmeasureofcontrol, althoughinefficientlybythattime.

Turnswereverypleasant,withnoco-ordination problemsoradverseaileroneffects.Altogether,a nicelyharmonisedaffair,withloadingsonthelight sideandtakingontheairofalittleMesserschrnitt108 TAIFUN.
TherewererumoursthattheMICgaverathera frightwhenstalledorspun,andpilotswerewell advisedtokeeptheirspeedsonthehighside,buta probeintothisareaestablishedthatitonlystalled whenpressedintoaveryhighnoseattitudeatsomethingbelow40m.p.h.However,whenitstalled,it STALLED!
Onemoment,oneisflying..just,thenyouarenot. Therewasnobuffetreally,asintheChipmunkand rememberthathasdeliberatelyfittedbuffetinducing devicesontheleadingedgeandtheSokolhasnot.The ratherpointedwingsgaveamarkedtendencytodrop, withnoparticularpreferenceandthesecharacteristics werestillmoreorlessapparentwithanyarrangement offlap.However,thewholethingwasratheras expectedandtheSokolgivesagoodexperienceofthe stallfortrainingpurposes,withmisuseofaileron givingjusttherequiredadditionalfright.
Recoveryhastobetherightprocedure,but,asin theChipmunk,fullrudderinthespinsituationis effective,withthecontrolcolumngoingwellforward. butitworks.Quitealotofheightcanbelost,sothe areatopracticeisthe'recoverywithminimumloss'. whichgivesnoproblems.
Gettingorganisedinthejoiningprocedure,with specialattentiontoundercarriage.Isetupanapproach,notingtheattitudeswithflap,trimmingand usingthepowersparinglywithplentyoftimetotake itallin.Thenoseisfairlylongforsuchasmall aeroplane,whenseenfromthepilot'sseatandclear visionforwardisonlyavailablewithfullflap,when theapproachissteep.However,Iworkeduptothat ineasystages,landingwithtwostagesfirst,onlya moderateamountoffleetandanicetouch-down, afterwhichitstayedfirmlyontheground.
TheSokolsoonrunsoutofrudder,however,andas intheAuster,ithastobeusedtothefull,withcarefuluseofbrakeifinacrosswind.Theovershootis comfortableandafullflaplandingveryconventional offanapproachat50m.p.h.ifspaceislimited.
Overall,itwasaverysatisfyingaeroplane,with handlingqualitiesjustrightforatrainerandyeta competitivetouringcapability.Ofallthecompromises Ihavemetindesign,thisonecomesoutaheadofthe Pup,andagood20yearsearlier!
Onreflection,thereisn'tmuchinitsclass,asthe Falcoseriesaremorepowerfulandfaster,theJodels arcnotasrefined,althoughverygoodintheirway andbearinginmindthattheSokolwasoriginally aerobalic,too.Iamverysurprisedthatmoreofthem werenotsoldthroughoutEurope.Lookingcloselyat it.youcandetectKlemmandZLINelementsinthe design,givingtheimpressionofaquitesturdyand business-likeno-nonsenseaeroplane,asoneexpects fromthosepartsofEurope.Inthemetalrange,the nearestthinetoitisprobablytheGlobeSwift,althoughthatisheavier,morepowerfulandabitfaster.
Theoriginalquestion,whatisitworth!Well,witha pedigreeandhistorylikethis,itrepresentsagood, non-depreciatinginvestment,andwithafair,useful lifeaheadofit.Theengineisstillavailableandsoare alotofspares,andconsideringwhatmoremodern touringaircraftcost,thisremainspreferable,inmy viewtoahigh-timeCherokeeanyday.Itisalsoalot cheapertorun,whengoingfromAtoB.Whoever buysitwillhaveanicebargainandIratherwishIwas abitmoreaffluent.EvenasaCFIlivingin'reduced circumstances',I'dratherlikeitmyself!Itcouldn't wishforabetterrecommendationthanthat,couldit?

Therudder,tailplaneandelevatorshavebeen finishedandthefuselageisthreequarterscomplete. showeitherfixedorretractablebutthesavingisa meresevenknotsandTerrydoesnotratethisworth wbilefortheextraexpenseandweightpenalty.A criticismofhisisthattheplansalreadycosttoday about[50andthatitemssuchastheretractableundercartplansareextra.Thcreare,apparently,several similar'extracostsforplansforsmalldetailvariationsandaBuildercouldwellfindthattheplan costisrunningawaywithafarhigherproportionof thetotalcoststhanonewouldthinkjustified.

Theconditionofwoodsurfacesatthetimeor glueinghasanimportantinfluenceonthestrengthor gluejoints.Freshwoodsurfacesthataresmooth, uniformandfree from crushedsurfacelibre,;andwood dustaregenerallythemostsatisfactonforglueing purposes.Timberjointsmadebetweenpieceshaving (a)thesamegraindirectionand(b)thesamegraM pitcharestrongest.AnyjoMtinvolvingendgrainisthe weakest,thejointbecomingprogressitelystrongeras theangleofjointtothegraindiminishesfrom90deg. (weakest)tozero(strongest).
Sanding,tooth-planingorothermethodsof rougheningwell-planedwoodsurfacesarebothunnecessaryandinadvisableforfreshsurfaces
Plywood,ontheotherhand.presentsamore complexproblem.Tobeginwith.plywoodisa manufacturedsubstancewhichhasquitedifferent characteristicstonormaltimber,evenlaminated timber.ILhas,forexample,differentrates of expansionandcontractions,adifferentmoisturecontent and,aboveall,adifferentsurface.Plywoodisusually ofbirchsvhichisamoderatelyhardwood,hasahigher specificgravitythanspruceandhasadifferent,more opengrainstructUre(moreproperly. fibre structure). Theglueingthusinvolvessomewhatdissimilar materials.Furthermore,surfaceconditionsmay developduringmanufacturewhichmaymakethe exterioroftheplywooddifficulttobondto.Aresult ofthehot-pressmethodofplymanufactureisthatthe outerveneersbecomeglazedeitherwiththerelease agentfromthepressplatesorfrontgluepenetration. Lightsandingofplywoodbeforeglueingremoves thisglazedcondition.bothrotaryandorbitalsanding tieingacceptablesolongascareistakentoseethat anyreductioninthethicknessoftheouterveneerdoes notexceed10percent.
Aftersanding,thesurfaceshouldbethoroughly brushedwithafairlystiffbrush,suchasthesortusedby paper-hangers.toremovedustintheporesAfairly dampclothshouldthenheusedalloverthesanded surface.Thiswillbringupthegrainandthrowoutany remainingdustandloosewoodfibreswhichcanaffect glueing.
