"TRIALSANDTRIBULATIONS".Thatexpression wouldhavebeenappropriateifappliedtolittlefirms thatsprangupbetweenthewars.particularlynear WorldWar2,tocontendwiththeambitionsofimpecuniousindividualstoownultra-lightaircraft.

NottheleastofthesewasDartAircraftLtd OriginallyknownasZanderandWeyl,thelateE.P. Zanderattendedtothebusinesssideoftheventure whiletheimmensetalentsofthelateA.R.Weyl, A.F.R.Ac.S.,AF.T.A.S.,F.B.I.S.,wereconcentrated ontechnicalactivities.

WcylsawwhatwashappeningcoGermanyfour yearsormorebeforetheoutbreakofWorldWar2 and,beingwellupinthehierarchy,leftthatcountry. bringingwithhimcratescontaininghisaeronautical dataImetAlfredRichardOscarWcylwhengliding atDunstableandsubsequently,whenZanderleft, becameadirectorofthefirmincornpanywiththat brilliantpilotRobertLindsayNeale(laterkilledwith anothertestpilotwhenflyingforBoultonandPaul Ltd.):theideaofthisarrangementwastoensurethat thecompanyenjoyedBritishstatus.

Webuiltandrepairedcurrentsailplanesandmade ancientgliderreplicassuchasWrightandLilienthal foranabandonedthin,aPoudeCielforacustomer, areplicacross-channelBldriotforR.G.J.Nashofthe HorselessCarriageCo.andthenWeylturnedhis attentiontoultra-lightaircraft.Hismainprerequisite. afeaturethathealwaysstressed,wasagoodviewfor thepilotandhishrstdesignforDartAircraftLtd. consistedofaparasol,pushermonoplaneknownas theDart"Pup".

Fromtheoutset,theword"robust"wasverymuch intheforefrontand.whenFdesignedwing-folding mechanismthatinnowayinterferedwiththerigging oftheaileroncontrols,hespentsometimebefore beingsatisfiedfromthestressingpointofview.

Whateveraircraftwasflown,ithadtobedismantled firstandtrundledtoaneighbouringfarmer'sheld,for ourestablishmentconsistedmerelyofatinybuilding andyardatDunstable.However,itwasfuntowork withasmallstaff,evenifonelived"onashoestring", ratherthanbecomingamerecoginthehugewheelof amajoraircraftfactory.

The"Pup"wasfirstflownwitha25-27h.p.twostrokeAvaFrenchengineonthe26thAugust.1936 inthehandsofWeyl,whoreportedthatapartfrom beingunderpowereditwasdelightfultofly,an opinionsharedbyF.D.Bradbrookewhodidmuchto assistthetirm.Subsequently.performancewasenhancedbyatwin-cylinderBristol"Cherub-of36h.p.. butinspiteofthat,duemainly'tothefallibilityof engines,the"Pup"'didnotgointoproduction. Engineswere.infact,thebugbearofultra-light builders.

Therefollowedthe"Kitten",alowwingtractor monoplaneequippedatfirstwiththeFrenchfourcylinder,horizontally-opposedAva.Weylhaddesignedoneofthelirstwoodenlowwingcantilever monoplanes,theUdetU.1of1922,sothathewaswell qualifiedtoproducethisconventionaltype:itfirst flewinJanuary1937.Duetohisgenius(hedesigned thewing.forinstance,withachangeofsectionfrom thebasicNACA23012attheroottoadifferentcon-

Thetake-offwassimple,theviewexcellent,the deliberatestallinnocuouswithouttheslightest tendencytodropawingandthelandingwaseasy.in fact,weallowedanyone,evenoflimitedexperience, tosampletheaeroplaneFrompeoplelikeGeoffreyde Hayilland,JunrandH.A.Taylordowntoapilot whohadtouchednothingsinceperformingonCapronitriplanesinWorldWarI.theaircraftremained intact:thelatterpilotsaidthatashehadlackedpower experienceforsolong,hewouldoni:%.taxithemachine fromoneendoftheaerodromeandback.Turning intowindoncemore,temptationwonandhecompletedtwocircuitswithanimmaculatelanding!

Thesecond"Kitten'',G-AEXT,wasfittedwiththe 32/36h.p.J.A.P.twin,acleaned-upundercarriage withspatsandwasenteredforthe1.0.Mracein1937 toheflownbyF.DBradbrooke.

ForallWeyl'sefficiency.hecouldnotcontrolthe shortcomingsofmailablemotorsandagaintheengine letusdown."Again",becausesmallaeroenginesof

thedayhardlymeritedtheterm"reliable"andwe werebeset aL alltimesbytheirtroubles.

ftisnotconducivetogoodbusinesswhenaprospectivebuyerofanaeroplanesuffersenginefailure eventotheextentofabrokenpiston,thathappened ononememorableoccasion.

The"Kitten"soldforwellunderE-100andwas offered,also,inkitform.Oneortwoarestillflying andanexample.builtinAustralia,notchedmany hundredsofhoursandwasstillgoingstrongafter eightyears.

fnbetweentimeswemadethe"Flittermouse",a braced,pushermonoplane(rathersimilartoaglider primarytrainer)totheorderofDr.Bradbrooke,a brotherofFD.B.ftwasequippedwithaScott "Squirrel"ofalleged28h.p..thatwasfarmoresteady whenidling,afterbeinginducedtostart,thanwhen roll throttlewasapplied.

Thefirmwaskeptgoingmainlyin1938bybeing entrustedwiththemanufactureoftheHandley-Page 75"Manx"poweredbytwo"GipsyMajor"engines drivingpusherairscrews,thegreatman'sventureinto thetaillessheld.Design or thejigswasmyresponsibility.

Sywell,toahundredorsoaviatorsinNorthamptonshire,isasmallvillagewithalargegrassairfield. workshopsandmotelcomplexservingtheimmediate neighbourhood.ToalltheotherPFAmembers,both inEuropeandintheseislands.Sywellisthenameofa Rally.Itisthebiggestrallyoflightaircraft(measured innumberofaeroplanesattending)inEuropeand, indeed,anywhereintheworldoutsidetheU.S.A. Sywellisorganisedbyvolunteers,workingwithintheir homeStruts,attendingSywellCommitteemeetings andaenerallyarrangingallthefinitedetailsthatare requiredtogetanactivitylikethisofftheground.

Sywellisnotanairdisplay,anairshowor a Biggin HillAirFair.SywellisarallyofPilots,byPilots,for Pilots.Bypilotswemeanthosethatflyin,thosethat arebuildingacreationintheirgarage,thosethatare justthinkingandhopingtoflytheirownoneday.Of course,wealsowelcome(andcaterfor)thevintage man,therestorerandthePilotwholikestoflyinto seeusinaclubaircraftorevenabusinessjet.

TheRallystartsonFridaylunchtimeandcontinuesthroughtotheSundayevening.Itincludesthe AGMofthePFA,theAnnualDinnerandthePrizegiving.ACouncilmeetingisheldandalatenight barbequeisalsosuffered.Prizesarejudgedforjust abouteveryaspectofourflyinginterest,frombest home-builttoclosestonthespotlanding.

Howdoesitallhappen?BackinOctoberoflast yeartheSywellCommitteehaditsfirstmeetingtoset outthedetailsof'Sywell75International',asitwillbe called.Alreadyorganisedaretheworkerswhowillbe puttingupthetents,installingthetelephones,testing theVHFradiotelephonegear,diggingtheloosandso on.Thecommercialadvertisersandrentersoftrade standsarebeingapproachedandgraduallySywell75 willbecomeafactforthisyear.Iknownowthatby WednesdaymorningthePFAbuswillbebeingloaded, theprogrammeswillhavebeendelivered,theOffice stockwillhavebeentransferredtothebusandcome midnightthe54-seaterwillbeonthewaytoNorthamptontounfoldanotherPFARally.OnThursday morningothervehicleswillleavewithperishablefoodstuffstojointheovernightconvoyoffencing,loos, tents,batsandeverythingelsethatgoestomakeup OURrallyoftheyear.

ThethingthatmakesOURrallysodifferentfrom alltheotherairshows,etc.,isthat,apartfromthe normalairfieldstaff,everyoneisaVOLUNTEER. Thisyear,aslast,weshallbehavingasystemwhereby youcanvolunteerYOURserviceswhenyoufirstcome ontothefield.Therearevariouspecuniaryadvantages, likefreemealtickets,althoughlastyearquiteanumber ofthesewerenotused.Almostallofthosewhohelped hadafeelingofbeingpartofthesceneandgavetheir servicesreadily.AftermyfirstSywellasaworkerI foundthat,havingtakenpartinit,Icouldbeproudof itasaPFAMemberandItookhomewithmememoriesoftherallythatIhelpedtorun.

SoSywellwillcomeandgoagain,butwith jviir helpitwillbethatmucheasierfortheorganisers,so pleasedocomeandgiveusahandforathree-hour shift,you'llgetthatmuchmoreenjoymentandfulfilmentoutofit.

RODERICKTURNERMEMORIALTROPHY

I.ThePOPULARFLYINGASSOCIATIONhave beenmadeTrusteesforthisTrophywhichispresented byhisMotherandhisFamilyandFriendstobea permanentmemorialforRoderickTurner,flying instructor.

2.Thisisanannualaward,whichlastyearwasmade toF.I.V.(John)Walker,ourengineeringofficer,and whichmaybeawardedtopersonsorgroupswhose achievementduringthepreviousyearhasbeenjudged tocontributemosttowardsFlyingforFun.

3.Thejudgesareparticularlyinterestedinthe aspectsof:

YouthfulenthusiasmanddedicationtoPFA flyinginterests.

Successfulachievementsdespitelackoffinance. Helpingothers.

Achievementontheground:designing,buildingororganisinginthePFAsphere.

4.ItisaconditionthattheTrophyshallbekept withintheU.K.andreturnedtotheTrusteesafter oneyear.

5.Candidatesmaybeofanyage,nationalityorsex.

6.Recommendationsarerequestedfromanybody whowishestomakeoneandmayrelatetoamember ofthePEAoranynon-member.Theonlyrestrictions arethatnobodymayrecommendhim/herself!If possible,recommendationsshouldbesponsoredby morethanonepersonandshouldreachthePEA officeatShorehamnotlaterthan15thJune,1975,and bemarkedCONFIDENTIAL.FORTHEATTENTIONOFAYRCOMMODOREGJCPAUL, PRESIDENTOFTHEPFA.

ForthefirsttimeourRallywillincorporateaserious airraceofourowntype—home-builts.Thisshouldbe acrowd-drawingevent.Wehavealwaysshiedaway fromthespectacular,beingapilots'rally,butthe F.A.R.A.raceisaneventthatcomeswithinour encompassandcantrulybeexpressedasaPFAengineeredandpilotedoccasion.

"TAYLORTITCH"

TheMidgetRacerdesigncompetition of 1964waswonbytheBeta.TherunnerupwastheTaylorTitch.The prototypeconstructedbyitsdesignerJohnTaylorwasunfortunatelydestroyedinanaccident.SincethenoneaircrafthasflownintheU.K.andseveralinFranceandtheU.S.A.

Theconstructioncloselyfollowsthedesigner'spreviousexperiencewiththeTaylorMonoplane.Thefuselageis verysimilar,whilethewingissmallerandtapered.Theaircraftisstressedto9gandenginesuptotheContinental C'90/0200seriesmayhelitted.

Theaircraftisofwoodenconstruction,andshouldgiveno trouble totheamateurbuilder.MetalFittingsarekept toahareminimum.Theconstructorisallowedconsiderablechoicewithregardtodifferentcanopies,undercarriages,optionalflapsandfuselagecovering.

Allthestructuralcomponentsaresmallenoughtobemadeinagardenshedoralmostanyhouse.Thewings aremadeintwopieces,builtupontwospars,theribsbeingdrawnfullsizeontheplans.Thefuselageisbuiltup onfourlongerons,andcaneitherbeply-coveredorpartiallyply-coveredwithfabric-coveredstringersontherear. Thefinandtailareofnormalconstructionandply-coveredThecontrolsconsistofpush-pullaluminiumalloy tubing.

February1975sawthejubileeofthebirthofthe Moth,andifwefollowtheevolvementofthelight aeroplaneduringthesubsequentfiftyyearsthenour ownneedscanmoreclearlybeseenandusefulpointers learnedabouttheformulaforanidealrecreational aeroplane.

Lightaeroplanetrialswerestilltakingplaceannually atLympne.TheMothswereexcludedfrommuchof theracingin1925byreasonoftheirengineweight andonAugustBankHolidayMonday,enginefailure putMothnumbertwooutofanassociatedinternationalhandicaprace.

In1926practicalcompetitionwasappearingagainst theMothsintrialssponsoredbythe DearMail. The Mothwaseliminatedinthesebythefactthatballast weights–tosimulateapassenger—weremissing, believedmissappropriatedbythatage'sversionofa spotter!

ItwastwomonthsafterthefirstflightoftheMoth thatthefar-sightedgovernmentofthedayagreedto subsidisesixflyingclubs.Toeachclubwasgiventwo Mothswithsparesuptoavalueof£2,000€1,000for thefirstyear'sexpensesandGOforeachpilot's licenceobtained.This,coupledwiththeenthusiasm oftheDirectorofCivilAviation,SirSeftonBranker, reallybroughtthelightaircraftmovementintothe publiceye.

RivalstotheMothwerenowbeginningtoappear. Foremostwerethedesigns or AV.Roewhofifteen yearsearlierhadbeenflyingfromShoreham.During mostofthetimesincethenhehadbeenevolvingand reworkingthefamousAvro504formulathetype whichSmith-BarryusedattheGosportSchoolof Flyingindeyelopingthemethodsofflyinginstruction whichwestillusetoday.AvRo'sproducedtheAyiani foldingbiplanewings.CirrusorGenetengine.In1926 theAvian,at€675was€55cheaperthantheMoth, huttherewereextraslikesixguineasforyourC-of4A and£17foracompass!

Blackburn.alsoanameprominentsince1910,producedtheirBluebird,thedifferenceintheirformula wasthattheseatsweresidebyside.

OthermanufacturersseenintheLympnetrialswere atthattimeoccupiedwithServiceorders.Hawker withtheirHartvariants:Bristol,Bulldogs,butWestlands,whohadbeenbuildingmostlyotherpeople's aeroplanesforthepasttenyearsatYeovil,wereto offeraparasolmonoplaneknownastheWidgeon.IL wasstillanopentandemandusedaCirrtisorA.S. Genet, or course.

Eiourtypesthenhademergedby1928.fnthe summerofthatyearMr. 0F Simmondswasto leaveSupermarMesatSouthamptonandinthenext twoyearsbuilt48examplesofhisSpartanatWest End,Southampton.

TurbulentG-AWBM,orBarnstormerasIpreferred tocallher,wasfinished.Twosummersofflyingwith herwereexhilaratingandveryrewarding,butwinter wasquiet.HowImissedthecold,lonelyhoursthat hadoccupiedmytimefortheprevious5yearsspent inmyworkshopbuildingthatdream,butnowshewas gone—sold.EveningsathomewithLindsay(mywife) meantthatlifewasnowasamarriedcouple'sshould be;Iwouldarrivehomefromwork,sitdownwiththe familyoveraneveningmeal,perhapsswitchonthe television,playwiththechildren,andbeinbedby 11.15p.m.Irealisedthatthislifeofluxurycouldnot continue,itwasbadforanyman.

IwasgratifiedtoreadJohnBeeswax'scommentson theappearanceoftheImperialWarMuseum'sR.E.8 atDuxford,andhisreferencetotheEastAnglian AviationSociety'splansonbehalfoftheIWMtorestoreittoflyingcondition.However,itmustbestated thatthepolicyoftheTrusteesoftheImperialWar MuseumissimilartothatoftheRoyalAirForce Museumregardingflyingitshistoricaircraft,andthat theyhaveannouncednoplansforflyingtheR.E.8. MembersoftheEAASinvolvedinrebuildingthisaircraftbelievethattheonlyrightwaytorestoresucha machineistodosotoflyingcondition(ashavethe RAFMuseumwithmostoftheirWWIaircraft),and muchthoughourMemberswouldliketoseeitflyon completiontheyunderstandthatanydecisionasto themethodandwhereaboutsofPublicDisplayofthis aswithanyotherIWMexhibitsissolelythatofthe !WM.

ReadersofPopularFlyingmaynotbeawareofthe extentoftheactivitiesoftheEAASatDuxfordand elsewhere.TheSocietyhasover900members,many ofwhomworkatweekendsatDuxfordontheoverhaulofaircraftnowbasedthere,includingthe ShuttleworthSpitfireV,theAmerican-ownedLiberator,theIWM'sR.E.8andJu52/3mandtheSociety's ownDC3,tonamejustafewofthe30orsoa/c alreadybasedthereandbelongingeithertotheIWM ortheEAAS.Negotiationsareunderwayforthe acquisitionofaTigerMoth,MessengerandWhitney Straight,which,liketheMagister, are toberebuiltto fly,andfortheseprojectsmorememberswillingto helpwiththisworkareurgentlyrequired.Whilstwe wouldliketohavemoreexperiencedhelpersthisis perhapsauniqueopportunityforpeoplewhoarc keentolearntogainexperienceunderexpertguidance, orjusttohelpwiththemanyunskilledbutessential jobsthatalwaysarise.Thewriterwouldbepleasedto hearfromanysuchwould-behelpers!

Followingonfromthesuccessfuldisplaysstagedat DuxfordjointlybytheIWM/EAAS/Shuttleworth Trustlastyearandthis,anotherFlyingDisplayis plannedforSaturdayandSunday,June28/29th,1975 andPFAmemberswillbeinvitedtobringtheiraircraft.Wewillkeepyouposted.

Finally,youmaycaretomentiontheEAAS MagisterGroup(PFAGroupNo.281)andtheir projectofrebuildingMagisterG-AKPF(onpermanentloanfromLaurieTaylor).CarlButlervisited ourworkshopinSeptembertoinspecttherebuilt fuselage,finandrudder,theaircraftbeingclearedby theCAAforcertificationbythePFA.

ThefuselageofG-BABYisslightlydifferentin appearancetotheoriginaldesign.Ihaveblendedthe fuselagereardeckingintothecockpitcanopylineand alsowideneditby2in.Ihavemadeafullfibrecowling (thatwasverydifficultthoughveryinteresting,evenif itchy),encasingtheContinentalengineandfittedthe steelspringundercarriagewithspats.Thefuselageis nowcompleteandthewingsarereadyforcovering.

Iloathetotalktoomuchaboutaprojectthathas notyetreachedtheflyingstage,thatiswhyIhavekept quietaboutmybuildingprogramme.Whensheis flying(February/March),thenI'lldosometalking,but atthemomentIliketothinkofmyselfasa'doef!

Eventheenrouteflyingwasnotwithoutincidentfor justafterpassingStratford-on-Avonwithallgoing smoothlyonthelastlap,theequaninimityofthecrew was'shatteredbyamostappallingtearingnoise'The cockpitwasimmediatelythcsceneofintenseactivity, thethrottlewasclosed(makingnodifference),the gaugeswerechecked,thethrottlewasopenedagain, thewindowswereexaminedforsecurity,butthere appearedtobenothingtoaccountfortheghastly racket,whichcontinuedasasortofstaccatodrumming noise.AprecautionarylandingatEnstonerevealeda stripoffabric,tornfromthetopofthewindscreen, wasflappingagainstthefuselageinamostun-Mothlikemanner.

SinceG-ADNEwasrecoveredatNewtonardsin 1970themachinewasinagoodcondition.soBernard Hardinghashadnomajorrebuildingproblemsusually associatedwitha1935aeroplane.Hehascarriedouta programofcarefulmaintenanceandlovingcarethat hasresultedinaconcoursfinishofredandsilverwith allmetalfittingspolished.Thephotographtakenat CronlieldlastyearshowsBernardHardingstanding bythetailplaneofhislovelyvintagebiplaneHehas takenpartinmostVintageClubmeetingsoverthe pasttwoyearsandhadplanstotourScotlandlast summer.However,theweatheronceagainprovedso we(andwindythatliereluctantlyabandonedthisplan.

Lastyear,duringtheVintageAircraftClub'stenth anniversarycelebrations,ChairmanCarlButlervisited Mr.G.ReesofCarmarthenwhoov)nstheonlystir-

vivingCivilianAircraftCompanyCoupe.Theaircrafthasnotbeenflownformanyyearsanditsconditionhassufferedfromthelongyearsofstorageto suchanextentthatitprobablywillneverflyagain. Thisisasadendingtoastoryofanaircraftwhichwas faraheadofitstimeinconceptanddesign.In1928, whentheD.H.CirrusMothopencockpitbiplanes werecreatingalegendfortheirdependability,ahandfulofmenledbydesignerHaroldBoultbeewcre buildingatwo-seat,enclosedcockpit.highwing monoplane,anticipatingthedaywhentheflying publicwouldbecometiredofleatherhelmetand heavySide&flyingsuits,sonecessaryinthedraughty, opencockpitsofitscontemporaries.Theprototype, registeredG-AAIL,wascompletedintheautumnof thatyearanddispatchedtoMartleshamHeathfor theofficialflighttestsrequiredbytheAirMinistry. Rightfromthestartthelittleaircraftwasastarperformerandverypopularwiththetestpilotswho valueditscrispcontrols.ArthurHunt.whowaschief engineerfortheCivilianAircraftCo.,hasrecalled that'theMartleshamHeathboyssangitspraises'and therewasnodelayintheissueoftheCertificateof Airworthiness.Theproblemsofproductionwerethen investigatedandinJulythefollowingyeartheCivilian AircraftCompanywasturnedintoalimitedcompany toproceedwiththeproductionoftheCoupeatasmall factoryontheboundaryoftheHullMunicipalAirportatHedon.TheCoupewasbuiltmainlyofwood. Themaincomponentssuchasfuselage,wingsand empennagewerecoveredwithplywoodtoforma stressedskinstructure,nofabricbeingusedinany partofthemachine.Allcontrolrunswererigidtubes runninginrollerbearings.Particularattentionwas madetoeaseofmaintenancewithaccessibleinspection coverslocatedatallvitalpoints.Wheelbrakesand steerabletailwheelwerefittedandthewingsfoldedfor lowcosthangarage.Althoughtheprototypewas poweredhya85h.p.A.B.C.Hornetengine,production machineswerefitted WiththeI05h.p. Unfortunately,duetoeventsbeyondthecontrolof theproductionteam,financialsupportwaswithdrawn afteronlyfiveaircraftwerecompletedandthe Companyfolded.Theexistingaircraftwereflownby theirownersalloverEuropeduringthethirtiesbut onebyonetheydisappearedduetolackofspares untilonlyG-ABNTremainstodayinWales.The designer,HaroldBoultbee.wasanearlymemberof theVintageAircraftClubattheageofeighty.Arthur Hunt,ChiefEngineerandpilot,metupwithNevil ShuteNorwayandtogethertheyformedtheAirspeed AircraftCompany,buildingaircraftforSirAlan Cobhamtocarrypassengersathisairshows.

Didyoudeckyourhallswithboughsofhollyat Christmas?StuartMcKaydidn't.Hisloungewas decoratedwithtwoTigerMothfuselagesandhis storedJodelBebeG-AVPD.Mostofusappreciate theconvivialatmospheregeneratedbypaperchains andtinsel,buthowmanyenthusiastswouldsecretly liketohaveevenoneTigerMothintheirlivingroom duringthefestivities(oratanyothertimeforthat matter).Tothoseofusthatsharewhopointofview. Stuart'sloungerepresentssomethingofaparadisein whosecentrally-heatedwarmthnoanti-chillthinners areeverrequired.

GeoffreydeHavillandwasnotcontentwiththe phenominalsaleoftheMoth.(ByMarch1930135 outof206privateaircraftinBreatBritainwere Moths).Flehadtomovewiththetimesandrealised thatsomeprotection•asrequiredforpilotand passenger.Afteracoupleoffalselinesofdevelopment thereappearedtheDF180orMothfirwithitsbraced (folding)highwingandseating3inleatherupholsteredcomfort.£1.000wasthepriceforthenew machine,soontobecalledthePussMoth.

Attheendof1929wecanconvenientlydrawaline. Anewformulawassoontoemerge.Thelowcantilever wing;enclosedseatingandthingscalledflaps.

Beforestartingintopaint.itseemedadvisableto checkthetankforwater-tightness—orratherpetrol tightnessandcapacity.IsetthetankLipontrestles. screwedthecockintothebaseofthesumpandstarted topourinmeasuredquantitiesofwater.

Waterfairlypouredoutthroughthejointsbetween thetankbottomundtheendsThesejointswere made withaglasstapeofisatheropenweavesoIwasnot altogethersurprised.Iemptiedthetankandleftitto dryoutforaweek.

Ithengavethejointsaliberalapplicationofresin andreinforcedthemwithoneounceglassclothbefore tryingagain.

TherewerestillsomeminuteleakssoIfinishedoff withmoreresinandlinefinishingclothandfinally pouredresinintothetankandslowlyrockeditfrom sideLosidewithoneenddownatatimetoallowthe resintopenetratethejointfromthepressureside. Thatfixedit.

011Sunday,the29thDecemberlast,therewasa highlysuccessfulbreakfastpatrolconductedatRedhillAerodromebytheTigerClub,ablyassistedby PFAmembers.Over50aircraftvisitedbutonly6 managedtoarriveunidentifiedandqualifyforthefree breakfastthatwaslaid on bythemanyhelpers.The eighteendefenderswereperhapsthewidestvariety thatareeverfieldedateventsofthistype,beingcomposedofTigers,Stampes,Jodelsandrightdownto theseveralTurbs.thatarepartoftheTigerClubscene.

TheVisitorswereofanequallywiderange,butI thinkthatthehighestscorewastothefactthatthe eventreceivedamentioninthefollowingday's Daily Telegraph- -aneventindeed.

Thegleamingnewshedsandthetowerappearedin thedistanceandIbeganaturnintowardsthenearest runway,regardlessofwind,astheneedlesonthefuel gaugeswereshoutingEMPTY.

TheC.O.wasnotveryunderstanding.Heassumed thatwehadstoppedoverinCyprusforanightonthe townsincetheNicosiannight-lifewasalmostalegend intheMiddleEastatthattime.

ThePFACouncilheldaveryusefulmeetingonthe 13thDecember,1974.ThemostimportantitemdiscussedwastheSportsCouncil'sadditionofrecreationallivingtoitslist.TheAirfieldsCommittee underourPresidentisnowgoingaheadwiththe PFArepresentationtotheSportsCouncil.

TheSportsCouncilisdividedintoelevenregions. EightoftheseregionscontainaStrut,theotherthree areasarelargeregionsofthecountrywithnoStrutas yet.TheycomprisethewholeofScotland.Walesand theWestMidlands.

Each'Sport'willbeinvitedtosendtworepresentativestositontheirrespectiveregionalSportsCouncil andputforwardtheirrequirementseitherintheform ofamenities,orfinancialassistance,orboth.These representativeswillhaveastrongcaseif.forexample. theirareahasoneortwohundredmembers, or which athirdorahalfownorshareaircraft.

AcoupleofmonthsagoIwenttoafriendand fellowPEAmember'shouse,hewasinterestedincompilingaproductionlistandpreservationofAusters. fheartilyagreed,butafterseeinghowmanyAusters weremadefdidnotreallyfancytryingtotracethem rightbacktoTaylorcraftdays_(Nooffencemeantto Austerowners).

Later,thisfriendwroteandsaidhe'sjoinedthe PFA(who??).Ididn'tknowwhotheywere,–They promoteallformsofhomebuiltandultra-light aviation,theyhaveavintagesectiontoo,hewrote. Withoutawaitingnlyreplyhesentanapplication formembershipform.SoacoupleofweekslaterI tooktheplungeandsentt.2.20offtoShoreham.

Thushasbeentheweatherforthelastfewweekends. Gregtooktheopportunitytomakeupanewsetof stainlesssteelexhaustpipesaftertheoldonesgaveway tosomeinquisitivepokingwithascrewdriver.The originalsteelhadcorrodedcompletelyawayjustby theflangesyeiwent(almost)unnoticedunderthe chromiumplating.

Butlastweekendthewearherwasdifferentandfrom thestartpromisedthatwemightatleastgetairborne for,aswemotoredalongthroughyetmorerain,a thin,clearbluelinejustpeepedoverthehorizon indicatingthepassingotithefront.Sureenough,just asweanivedthelastoftherainpassedaway,the clean-cutedgeofthecloudrevealingabrilliantearlymorningsunthathighlightedthedarkgreynessthat hadenvelopedusminutesearlierwhileupwindnota cloudwastobeseeninthegin-clearairthatcalledso urgently.Quicklyweunloadedthegearfromthecar flying!Mits.anoraks,sometools.sandwichesandcoffee —andastackofextrapulloversfortodaywasgoing tohecold—andsploshedourwayoverthegrassto thehangarwhereLenJeffries,theownerofthis beautifulstrip,waswaitingforus.Hisfarmhouseis rightnexttothestripandseeingusarrivehenipped outtheback,unlockedthehangarandwepushedout theaeroplanes.

NowsinceGregfittedhisnewpipeshisenginehad playedup.Severalgroundrunsprovedthatitwasn't goingtorunsmoothly,soarmedwithafewtheories astowhatmightbewrong,acoupleofspannersand activelyencouragedbytilerestofusto"getthe thingsortedout 44hegotstuckinto theproblemsothathetoocouldgetairborne.He

suggestedIgooffstraightawaytomakethebestof theweather,hutIneededverylittleencouragement andwasalreadykittedup.ThetroublewithaMinor isthatyouhavetoheabitofanathletetothread yourselfonboardandwithallthegearonit'sten timesmorediffiadt.Butonceinsidethereisplentyof roomandit'sverycomfortable.Oncealofttheview downwardisquiteunsurpassedandwhenyouget usedtoliftingawingtoseeupthelackofupward visibilityisnoproblem.You'resuchapartofyour flyingnlachineitjustfeelslikeraisingyourarm.

AswingfromGregandafewminutestowarmup andthen,eagertobeoff,ashortrolldownthestrip andaway.Idecidedtostickatabout500feetandhave anosearoundthenearbydisusedairfieldofGransden Lodge.Likesonlanyairfieldsinthisarea,it'sall ploughedupandonlyoddpartsoftheperitrackand severalderelictbuildingsremain.IdlyIcircledround enjoyingthemarvellousfreedonlofbeingairborne againaftersomanyweeksofbadweather.1-watcheda chapexercisinghisdogsandsawhisfacelooking skywaidasIcruisedaroundoverheadandwondered ifhewasenjoyinghisSundayasmuch.

Theairwasalreadybecomingthermicandlittle wispsofcu.spottedtheblueabove_TiringoftheairfieldbelowIheadedwestwardupwindtowardsthe cotton-woolpuffsuntilsuddenlyagentleripple indicatedthepresenceoflift.Circhngcarefullyand bringingthespeeddowntoacomfortable50m.p.h. withthethrottlebackto1500r.p.m.,Iwasableto keepmoreorlesswithinthethermalandbeganto climb.TheMinordieslikeamotorisedbrickcomparedwitheventhemostmeagreperformanceglider butitdoesn'tdetractabitfromtheexcitementof seeingthealtimeterwindingupinagoodthermal.

VerysoonIwasatthebaseofthepuffat1200feet andithaddevelopedlike a hundredothersallround intoaproperlittlecloudthatwouldhavedonecredit toallyself-respectMgsteamtrainLoosingthethermal Iopenedupandchmbeduntil,resistingthetemptation nolonger,fturnedanddivedthroughthetopofa cloudthatpresenteditselfnearby,WheelingroundI divedagainandagainuntilthecloudhadbeenwell andtruly"shotup". Lookingwestwardagainthelittlecumulusclouds werealreadydevelopingwellbuildinginheight.I turnedandheadedtowardthenl,climbingasIwent untilbeforelongIhadreached2500feet.Aheadthe cloudsmergedtogetherasthesuncontinuedtokeep

thepotboiling.Ttoyedwiththeideaofclimbingup throughthecloud.Ihavealimitedpanelandthiswas theperfectopportunitytotryitoutforthefirsttime. I noticedthecloudbasewasnowatabout1500feet anddownwindthecloudswerestillisolatedlittle puffs.Idecidedtohaveago.Verysoonitseemed frommycockpitthatthewholeskyfromhorizonto horizonwascoveredinaloweringdullgreyceiling andTtightenedmystrapsforreassurance.Thena coupleofwisps—thegroundwasgoneandIwassuspendedmotionlessinthegreyvoid.Itseemedanage, fortheMinorclimbsslowly,before I passed3000feet. At3500feetitbegantogetbrighterandIhadaglimpse ofthegroundasIflewthroughaclearpatch—then intothevoidagain.Atnearly3750feetitwasextremelycoldwithoutthewarmthofthesunand althoughthecockpitisquitefreefromdraughtsmy noseandchinfeltlikesomethingapart.Thenanother flashofclearair,acoupleofwispsand I foundmyself inagreatvalleyintheclouds.Allroundtheedges billowstoweredupwardsandatoneendalayerof littlecumuluscloudsstretchedtothehorizonlikea giganticsnow-scape.Above,theskywasacleardeep bluewithjustafewwispsofcirrusandfurthertothe westasheetofhighcloud—perhapsthefirstsignsof thenextfront.Below,theshiningwhitefloorofthe valleywithnotasightofthegroundmadethistruly anotherworld.Thebrilliantsunandthewhitesand greysofthecloudweresobright I screwedupmyeyes andcursedatforgettingmysunglasses.

Icruisedupthevalley,climbingto4000feetthen

surprisejusthadtimetoseetwopinkorbspeering upatmeandrecognisedLeninhisBellancaScout withGregintheback.StuffingawingdownIwhipped aroundexpectingtoseehimcominginagaintoformate.Butnothingwastobeseen.Itremindedmeofthe wartimefighterpilotswhotellofsuddenlyfinding themselvesquitealongafterextricatingthemselves fromafuriousdogfight.ThenFspiedatinydoton thehorizon.Itseemedincrediblethathecouldbeso farawayinjustafewseconds.Howdeceptivedistances areinthisenvironment!Slowlyheturnedandbegan toclose.Falsoturnedtowardshimtakingcarenotto banktoosteeplytokeephiminsight.Thensuddenly hewascominginfastand I couldalmostseethesmile onhisfaceasheraisedhisnoseandfiredastreamof imaginarytracerintomyfuselage.Asquicklyashe hadcomehenowclimbedawaytowardstheclouds— perhapstosamplethedelightsofthatotherworldas Ihaddonejustashorttimebefore.

f hadbecomelostduringthemockfightandturned myattentiontofindingthestripagain.Aftersome minutessearching,duringwhichnothingseemed familiar,Irealizeditwasdirectlybelowallthetime! Bynowthewindatgroundlevelhadsprungupand wasblowingsome30degreesacrossthestrip.Tomake mattersmoreinterestingthethresholdwassituated rightintheleeofsomelargetreesso,withacertain amountoftrepidation, I startedmyapproach.Now theMinorisnotastrong-windmachinebyany standardsandmyexperienceofitscrosswindcharacteristicsaretosaytheleastlimited,soIelectedtohave

levelledoutrealizingthatitwouldtakeanageto climbovertheedgewhichappearedtogethigherevery minute.Suddenly I experiencedamostunsettling feelingofvertigowhen,justabouttoplungeintothe sideofthevalley,thesheerfaceofthecloudseemed sonearandsolidthatIcouldhavestuckoutahand andtouchedit.Theneverythingwasmotionlessagain foracoupleofminutesuntilasquicklyasIhadbeen swallowedupononesideofthecloudfwasspewed outagainontheotherintoanenormouscotton-wool bowl.Ireflectedas I cruisedroundandroundthe rim,occasionallydriftingthroughoddbillowssticking outfromthesides,thatobservingthesewondersfrom theopencockpitofanultralightisfarmoreimpressive thandoingthesamethineinacabin—albeitconsiderablycolder.

Alreadynearlythreequartersofanhourhadpassed asIreluctantlyturneddownwindandheadedfor home.As I nearedtheedgeofthecloudlayerbelow andsawthegroundagainIrecognisedalakeandthe familiarshapeofOldWarden.GraduallyIbeganto descenduntil,attheheightofsmallcu'sthathadnot alreadyoverdeveloped, I levelledoffandwandered homewardnotingthelandmarksthroughtheholes.

Suddenlyalittleredaeroplanediveddownfrom abovemystarboardwing,wounditselfundermynose anddisappearedundermytail.Recoveringfromthe 22

plentyofspeedinhand.Sureenough,intheleeof thetrees,theairspeedvanishedlikeafirst-classconjouringtrick.Thecontrolswenthorriblysoggy, I bouncedoffonewheelandjustcaughtsightoffour criticaleyesadmiringmyanticsfromthehangaras I piledonthecoalsandwentroundagainforanother bash. I wonderedwhpone'sworstlandinghash-ups couldn'tbedoneinprivate.NexttimeroundIhad someideawhattoexpectbuttheremusthavebeena lullinthewindforshesatdownfirmlywithoutany problem.Itaxiedbacktothehangar,switchedoffand satforafewsecondsjustsoakingupthesilence.Iwas gladtobesafelydownafterthatfirstattemptat landingbutstillenthralledatthesightsIhadseen. PresentlytheScoutarrivedoverheadandwassoon alsotaxyingbacktothehangar.Lenreckonedthatif hehadbeenvonRichthofenIwouldhavebeena gonnerand I remindedhimthatwithmy45against his150horsepoweritwasn'tsurprisingandweall agreedhowbeautifulthecloudshadbeen.

Gregdidn'tgethisenginesortedoutthatdaybut weallgotoffthegroundonewayoranother.The nexttime I standshiveringatthehangardoors listeningtotherainontheroofandwatchingthe stratusscuddingpastjustabovetheoutstretchedwindsock I shallrememberlastSunday.Afterall—it'spart ofwhatsportflyingisallabout.

AtameetingatSywelllastyear,theexecutive committeeagreedtotheformationofthreenewsubcommitteestoexplorethepossibilitiesofnewairstrips,engines,andlightaircraftdesigns.

TheP.F.A.dependsuponthesethreeareasforits futuregrowthanddevelopment,andsoitwasgenerally agreedthatthiswasastepintherightdirection.Since thatmeetingtookplace,Ihavebeengatheringinformationwithregardstodesignanddesignerswhich Iwouldliketopassontotheothermembers,together withsomepersonalviewsofmyown.

ApproveddesignsavailabletotheHome-Builder spanaperiodofabout35years,startingwiththe LutonMinor(re-designedin1939fortheHomeBuilder)tothepresentdaywiththeV.P.I.Abouthalf adozendesignsemergefromthisperiodtoformthe mainstayoftheBritishHome-Builtmovement,aircraft liketheTurbulent,CurrieWot,TipsyNipper,Taylor Monoplane,Jodel,andMini-cab,allwellproven aeroplanes,hutratheralimitedlistfortheaspiring newHome-Buildertoselectfrom,havingjustreadone oftheglossyAmericanmagazinesfilledwithnewand imaginativedesigns,it'sonlynaturalforhimtosend offfortheplansofanewandmoreup-to-date machine.Thisisreallythestartofthcproblem,becauseonlyafewoftheAmericandesignshavebeen approvedoverhere,sohehastobuildhisaircraftin thehopethatwhenitiscompletedhecangetit approved,orasanalternative,hecouldsendforaset ofstresscalculationsfromthedesignerwhichhecould thensubmittotheP.F.A.Eitherwayitisagamble

Whyaren'ttheremoreBritishdesignsthen? Certainlynotforthelackofabilityorknow-how. thinkacertainstagnationhastakenplacebrought aboutbytheofficialattitudeoftheP.F.A.whichis clearlyoutlinedintheleaflet"BuildingYourOwn Aeroplane-.Quote:"ThereforetheP.F.A.recommendthatanyonewithoutdesignexperienceshould considerbuildinganexistingapproveddesign"—unquote.This,coupledwithgreatuncertaintyastowhat 'is'andwhat'isn't'acceptablebythe'powersthatbe'. Iamnotsuggestingthatthereshouldbeanyreduction inthehightechnicalstandardsthathavebecome synonymouswiththeP.F.A.,butTwouldhatetosee

thosestandardsstiflecreativetalents.

Theformationofthedesigncommitteeisreallyonly thefirststeptoco-ordinatetheeffortsofseveraldesignerstogettheirprojectsofftheboardandintothe air.IfadesignersubmitshisideatotheDesignCommittee,thereislittletobegainedifthecommittee enthuseabouthis'brain-child',buthanditbackto himhopingthatinacoupleofyearshewillemerge withtheflyingprototype,havingdonealltheaerodynamics,stresswork,andbuildinghimself.The chancesaretheprojectwillrunintoallsortsof difficulties,andthefinalaeroplanewillnotseethe lightofday.

Aback-upserviceisrequired.

Ifadesignevaluatedbythecommitteeisseento havemerititcouldbepassedontoaTechnicalGroup comprisingengineer(woodandmetal),stressman, andanaerodynamist,whocouldcrosscheckthe designer'sfiguresandclearitonbehalfoftheP.F.A., orifthedesignerwasnotsoexperienced,theTechnical Groupcouldpossiblyproducethenecessaryfigures, giveadvice,andensurethatthedesignisuptoP.F.A. standards.Thedesignercouldthenproducehis workingdrawingsfromtheGroup'srecommendations.Totakeitastagefurther,PrototypeBuilding Groupscouldbeformedwiththedesignerincharge tosuperviseproduction,P.F.A.hasmanywilling handsonlytooeagertohelp.

Thesearejusta•fewsuggestionsthatwouldmake forasteadyHowofnewdesigns,uptothetechnical standardsrequiredbytheP.F.A.bydesigners,who atthemomentarenotpreparedtotaketheirideasany furtherthanaone-eighthscalemodelinthepresent officialclimate.

Itwassuggestedatacouncilmeetingheldat Barton,nearManchester,thataDesignCompetition couldbearrangedtostimulatetheflowofideas—good aeroplaneshavecomefromsimilarcoinpetitionsin thepast,andcoulddoagain.
