ENJOYTHESKY Part12."FirstFlight"

Itissaidthatthereareoldpilotsandboldpilots,but noold,boldpilots.Mysixtiethbirthdayoccurredsix monthsbeforeIflew007onhermaidenflightand IhadthenbeenflyingforsomeFortyyears,so,in termsoftheadage.thatmustmakemeacringing coward.However,afterthree}earsofwork,all directedtowardsthisverymoment,itwasonlyinthe fewminutestakentoputonmyoverallspriortothe momentousswingstartthatIfoundmyselfwishing thatIhadstucktostamp-collecting.Thentheengine caughtandfiredandwewereinbusiness,andvery busy.

Iclimbedintothecockpit.strappedinandtested thecontrolsforfullandfreemovement.Everything seemedtobemovingintherightsense,soIputthe chokecontroltonormal,openedupto1800r.p.m. andtestedthemags.AllseemedwellsoIreleasedthe brakesandtaxiedout.Attherun-uppointIwent throughtheolddrill:

TTrim—nothingIcoulddoaboutitnow.

MMixture—norma1.

Pitch—fixed.

FFuel-mustbeONorshewouldhave stoppedbynow.

Flaps—none.

Giros—onlyoneandthatwouldnotstart untilIgotsomeairspeed.

There mtal besomethingIcoulddo,soIresetthe altimetermicroscopicallytozero.Thebrakeswould notholdheragainstfullpowersoIcheckedthemags at2,200r.p.m.andtaxiedontotherunway.Ilether runstraightforalittleandthenopeneduptofull bore.

Sheunstuckveryquicklyatanindicatedfiftyknots andimmediatelytherewasanoticeablevibration.

"Oh,myGod.-Ithought,"Flutter.-SoIlanded straightahead,turnedofftherunwayandtaxiedback totheapron.OnthelongdragbackIthoughtitcould notpossiblybeflutterbecauseIhadnotfeltitonthe stickandanywayitcouldhardlyhappenatfiftyknots. Couldtheengineboltshaveworkedloose?Iconsulted withtheexpertswhohadgatheredtowatchmeand eventuallyoneofthem—theyoungestandbrightest ofusall—said"It'sgottobewheels.Tryatouchof brakeaftertake-offnexttime."

So[taxiedoutagainandhadanothergo.Thistime thesamevibrationoccurredbutatouchofbrake stoppeditimmediatelyandIclimbedoutatsixty knotsindicated.Sheseemedtohavefartoomuchon theportaileron—Ihadcopiedthetabfromtheother V.P.I'sthatIhadseen.Mike,myinspector,hadbeen opposedtothisfromthestartbutforonceIthought Iknewbetterandnow,asalways.Iwasprovedwrong. BudEvans,thedesigner,hadalsoquerieditsaying thatveryfewofthemanyV.P.I'sthathehadseen requiredanyailerontrimatall.Apartfromthisminor defect,whichIhadbuiltintohermyself,sheflew impeccably.Itookheruptoeighthundredfeetand flewagentlecircuitatanindicated65knots,which seemedtorequireonly2,500r.p.mImadeaglide approachat60knotsindicatedandputherdown reasonablygently,ratheralongwayuptherunway.In viewoftheinstructiontokeepafirstflighttoten minutesonly.Idecidedthatthiswouldhavetodofor theday.

Thepanelofexpertshadscrutinisedmytake-off withcareandreportedthattherewasvisibleforeand

aftvibration of theundercarriageimmediatelyafter take-off,butithaddampedoutquickly,presumably whenIhadappliedbrake.Nextmorning,Ireported allthistomyengineeringfriends,whopromptlypicked herupbyone‘vingtip,whenitwasseenthatassoon asthegroundloadwasremoved,theundercarriageleg movedinwardsundertheweightofthewheelandaxle andthebracingcableswentslack.Miketoldmeto putaplasticpackingpiecebetweenthebracingcables and}vireandtapethemtogether,andthisIhadforgottentodo.Ididitrightawayandalsoremovedthe offendingtrimtabfromtheportaileron.

ButIamgettingaheadofmyselfinmyeagernessto reportthat007isaveritableflyingmachineandmore thanjustgroundworthy.Tobacktrackafewweeks,I hadfilledintheapplicationforaC.ofA.,assoonas theformsarrivedfromtheP.F.A.office,gotMike's finalsignatureandsentitoff,togetherwiththeconstructor'srecordbookandphotostatcopiesofthe weighingsheetandthefuelflowtestrecordsheet.At thesametime,IwrotetoAirChiefMarshallSir ThomasPrickett.whorunsGoodwood,toaskifhe wouldadmitmynon-radioaeroplanefortestflying. SofarasIcanseethereisnoprohibitionagainstdoing one'stestflyingfrontaprivatestrip,butne}erhaving doneitbefore,IfeltthatIwouldliketobeasnearly intowindaspossiblewithplentyofrunwayonwhich tolandstraightaheadifnecessaryordesirable.Almost byreturnIreceivedaPermittoFlytogetherwitha "GoodLuck-messagefromJohn(F.I.V.)Walkerat theP.F.A.Office,andacharmingletterfromSir Thomas,sayingthatIwaswelcometouseGoodwood outofhours.IarrangedsomeleaveandrangA.T.C. atGoodwoodtoletthemknowIwascomingandthe nextday,helpedbyaneighbour,weloaded007onto JimWaller'strailer.

Wewerehavingabeerbeforetakingtotheroad whenthelocalpressarrived.Godknowshowtheyhad gottohearofitandIamafraidIwasrathershortwith theminmyhurrytobeoff.Buttheygotagoodpicture of007foldeduponthetrailer,withBasilstanding grinningbesideher.Helatergotarocketfromhiswife forhorninginontheact—butheismuchmorephotogenicthanIam.Mywifecamewithmetohelpwith theriggingandespeciallytorecruitassistantsforthe heavyanddifficultbits,likeofferingupwingstothe fuselage.Werigged007onthegrassundertheshade ofthetrees.Sheilarecruitedtwoexcellentassistants, oneofthemaveryfriendlyGerman.Ialmostcurled upwithembarrassmentwhenIheardSheilablithely tellinghimthatIhadoperatedinHurricanes,Spitfires andMosquitoes,andprayedthathewouldnotask howmanyofhiscountrymenIhadaccountedfor. Howeverhedidnotseemtoholditagainstmeandwe soonhadtheriggingcompleted.

Mikehadaskedhisfriend,theChiefGround Engineer,todothefinalchecksonriggingandcontrols andBobEdwardscalledonusandsuggestedthatwe move007totheMaintenanceHangar,sothathecould givehertheonceover.Intheeventitwasatwiceand thrice-overbeforeBobwassatisfied.AccordinglyI startedherupand,fortheveryfirsttime,taxiedher underherownpowerforthefewhundredyardstothe hangar.Ifoundherwonderfullyeasytohandleonthe ground,farmoresothanthePiperCub.Bobfound quitealotinmyriggingofwhichtodisapproveand suggestedthatIleaveherforthenightandcomeback

inthemorning,whenhewouldshowmewhathe requireddoingbeforehecouldsignheroffHis principalobjectionwastotherathersloppylitofthe inchdiameterboltintheeyeboltsofthestabilator. Thiswepackedoutwithwashersandshims,untilall theslophadbeentakenout.Healsofoundamusement inmyunprofessionalmethodsofdoingupthelocking wires.

Onewayandanotheritwas4.30p.m.beforewe wereallsianedupandIcouldtaxiherovertothe fuelpointtotakeonfourgallonsofAvaas,whichis wherewecameinIflewheragainthenexteveningfor thirtyminutestogettherealfeelofher.Withoutthe trimmingtabherailerontrimwasnearperfect—just ashadeofstarboardwingdown.Ifoundthehardest thingofallwastogetthestraightandlevelattitude correct.Inthis,sheremindedmeverymuchofthe Hurricane,withit'sslopingnosewhichwasnot obvioustoanyonebutthepilot.Indeed,thoughitmay soundridiculous,herhandlingintheairhadvery muchthefeeloftheHurricane,eventheglideapproach tolandbroughtbackmemories.Perhapsitwasbecause ofthisthatIcameinmuchtoofastandwentround againwithouttouchingdown.Thenextapproachwas muchbetter,asteady60knotsindicatedalltheway down,toaquitereasonablelanding,eventhough, flapless,shefloatedforanawfullongway.

Ilostthenexttwoeveningsflyingastheenginegot temperamentalandwouldnotstart.Eventuallywe tracedthetroubletooverpriming.Allpartofthe businessoflearningthetricks.Beforethenextflight Ireplacedthetrimtabbutthistimebenteverso slightlydownwardsandnowsheflewstraightandlevel withhandsandfeetoff.Itookherupto3,500feet,to checkthestall,whichoccurredat41knotsindicated, withaverygentledownwardbreakandahintofroll tostarboard.ItwasthegentleststallIhaveever encountered.Shejustnoddeddownapparentlywith plentyofaileroncontrol.Igotamoredefinitebreak bypullingthenosehigheratthestart,buttheend resultwasthesame.

So,backtothecircuittopracticeafewlandings. Thetrick,Idiscovered,wastokeeptheapproach speedbelow55knots,indicated,otherwiseshewould floatforever.Ononeapproachat60knotsplusI roundedoutjustabovetherunwaynumbersand toucheddownatthemidrunwayturn-offpoint.The nextnightwastheoccasionofthetwohourendurance test.OnthewayupIcheckedtherateofclimbfrom 500ft.to1500ft.atanindicated55knots.Itchecked outat550ft.perminuteandwithagroundtemperature

or 25degreesCelsiusIthinkthisworksoutatabout 600ft,perminutc—notatallbad.1levelledoffat 2,500ft.andpatrolledbackwardsandforwards,from FordtoShoreham.At2750r.p.m.shewasflying handsandfeetoffatanindicated66knots.Atime checkonfourrunsgaveaTrueAirspeedof72knots or83m.p.h.Again,notbadatall.

Itwasgettingprettychillysittinginadraughtat 2,500ft.andIwasgettingboredwiththisbitofSussex, soIdroppeddownto1,500ft.andwentonatourof Chichesterharbour,thebitofHampshirewhereIwas raised.At2,500r.p.m.Iseemedtobegettingasteady cruiseat55knotsindicated,butitwasaettinglateand coldand007wasgettinglowonfuel.Ihadtogetback tothecircuit.Wewereapproachingtheminimumfive hours,afterwhichthefulltestschedulecouldbeflown.

madeandthecompasstobeswungsoIpottothefield earlynextday.BobEdwardshadaskedmewhetherI hadbalancedthewheelsandIhadconfessedthatI didnotknowIhadto.Fleexplainedthatthere shouldheamarkonthetyre,sshichshouldbelined upwithamarkonthetube,whichwouldhesomewherenearthcvalve.Iwentandlookedatthetyres andsureenoughtherewasaredmarkoneachtyre butineachcaseitwasnearlyoppositethevalve.Here wasthecauseorthevibrationaftertake-off.ThatafternoonIflewherfor45minutesbeforeIstartedthetest schedule.Ihadtogetinanotherfourlandingstocompletethelifteenreqtared.Thefirstwasprettyropey buttherestcameoffreasonablywell—andthat vibrationhaddisappeared.Iclimbedawayfromthe lasttouch-and-gointothetimedclimbthrough500ft to1500ft.Onupto3,000ft.forthestalls,thesideslipsandthemaximumspeeddive.AlltoI ewaythrough shehandledliketheperfectladythatsheis.andatlast downtothewhistlingglideandaperfectlandingI taxiedin,switchedoff.pickettedher,putonthecovers andwenthometofillinthetestscheduleformandget itinthepost.RegretablyIhavetoearnalivingsoit wasawholeweekbeforeIwasabletoflyheragain

Itwasablusteryevening.withafaircrosswind componentontherunwayinuse. I triedtogeta calibrationonthe2,500r.p.m.cruiseandgotsome veryoddresults,patrollingbetweenGoodwoodand ThorneyIslandItcouldhavebeentheinconstancyof thewindor,ontheotherhand,acharacteristicthat AirCdr.ChrisPaulnoticedwhenflyingRichard Husband'sV.P.1,thatafterlabouringalongatall indicatedairspeedof55knots,ifonejustloweredthe noseandallowedthespeedtobuildto60knots,she wouldholdthishigherspeedwhenreturnedtostraight andlevel.Witheverythingagainstme,agustingcross wind.turbulenceontheapproachandaheckofawind gradient,IpulledoffthebestlandingIhaveever performedinthisoranyotheraeroplane.Veryodd. ForonceImusthavebeengivingproperattentionto thebusinessinhand,insteadofwool-gatheringasis mywOnt.

ThefollowingFridaytheC.orA.arrivedandIwas freetoflycross-countrytoJimEspirEsstripatPopham,whereshewastobestationed.butforvarious reasonsitwasSundaybeforeIcouldmakethetrip. Thelong,hotsummerhadbrokenandthevisibility wasprettymarginal,indeeditwasrainingsoftlywhen 1 tookoff.Iclimbedtomysafetyheightandsetcourse overGoodwoodRaceCourse.Almostimmediately thegrounddisappearedinheavyrain.Toaddtomy discomfortitwasexcessivelyturbulent.Itoldmyself thatthis•astheorographiceffectontheseaward

slopeoftheSouthDownsandwouldclearbeforeI reachedPeterslield.

EkeminuteslaterIwasremindingmyselfthatIhad notopenedabookonMeteorologyforthirtysearsor moreand,maybe.Ihadforgottensomethingwhen treesendawindingroadappearedbelow.Therewere alotofcorsontheroadondsthere.Iaskedmyself, wouldallthosecarsbegoingifitwa!,notPetersheld? Veryoftenwegetlettersfrommembersaskingif thereisaPFAGroupintheirarea.Usuallytheycome fromthequalifiedpilot,whojustcannotaffordto continuetoflyasoftenashewouldlike,attherates beingchargedatthelocalCluborSchool.Itisafact thataproportionoftheflyingchargesatthecommercialclubshastopayforthesalariesofthestaff,the instructors,rentandratesontheclubpremises,classroomfacilities,teachingaidsandalltheotherparaphernaliaassociatedwiththemoderntrainingorganisation,nottomentionveryexpensivemodern AmericanorContinentalmachines,oftenlavishly equippedtotakeyouIMCfromLondontotheSouth ofFrance,ortoenableyoutogetthemostadvanced ratingsimaginable.Nowondertheratesarehigh— andfortheequipmentatyourdisposalitisprobably verygoodvalueformoney.Inevitably,though,we findthatmanypilotswhojustwanttogetoffthe ground,donotwantallthissophisticationanddonot feeljustifiedin,ineffect,subsidisingthelearnerpilot. However,byjoiningalocalGroup—orformingone himself—thepilothasaccesstoawholenewworldof sportingaviation.Thereisoftennoneedtohavea sophisticatedaeroplaneandsinceadministrationis inevitablydonebythemembersthemselves(andbeing ahumanactivitythejobofgeneraldogsbodyusually fallsupontheshouldersofoneortwowillingindividuals—withoutwhomtheworldwouldceasetogo round),thecostsareoftenlimitedtothoseofcertifying andrunningtheaeroplane.Afterall—whyusethe Rollstopoptotheshoproundthecorner,whenthe Miniwilldo!Andthechancesare,youcanprobably taketheplaneawayforthedaytovisitaRallyor Fly-in—providedyoudon'thogitallthetime—and beingprobablylesssophisticated,itcanmostlikely getsafelyintoandoutofthemanysmallstripsspringingupalloverthecountry.Youcanmakesomany morefriendsonasinglevisittoafriendlystripand neverhavetodipintoyourpocket,thanyouprobably everwillataclinicallicencedairfield,wherethefirst thingyoudoistoreporttothetowerandforkouta heftylandingfee.

homestead,hehadgazedasachild,acrossthefieldsto wheretheD.H.GipsyMothscircledthenearbyflying clubandhadvowedthatoneday,hetoowouldhave anaircraftofhisown.Thismachineinwhichhenow satwastheculminationofthatchildhoodambition_ NotforTornHayesthesterileutilityofanewproduction'spam-can'.buttheflowingcontoursofasmall aeroplanethatepitomizedthedesignphilosophyof thepre-warera;'ifitlooksgooditwillflygood.'That philosophycouldneatlysummarizethewholeofthe Chiltonlegendand,likeTornHayes,thereareother pilotswhoareoftheopinionthatthesediminutive machinesaretheprettiestultra-lightsevermade.

Thedesignwasconceivedin1936whentwoyoung studentsfromthedeHavillandTechnicalSchool.

WardandDalrymple,setupaworkshopinthe groundsofWard'shomeatChiltonFoliatinBerkshire.TheprototypewasconstructedmainlyBorn engineeringsketchesandveryfewactualengineering drawingswereused.NamedtheChiltonD.W.I,and poweredbyaCardenFordconverted32h.p.motor carengine,theaircraftfirstflewinApril1937.RegisteredG-AESZ,thehandlingandperformance(top speed112m.p.h.)wassoencouragingthatthepartners decidedtoputthemachineintoproductionand formedtheChiltonAircraftcompany.Withahandful ofemployees,threeaircraftG-AFGH.G-AFGLand I2

G-AFSVwerebuiltbeforetheoutbreakofwar.The latterwaspoweredbyaFrench44hp.Traininverted inlineengineanddesignatedaChiltonD.W.1a.Ithad atopspeedof126m.p.h.andwasthelastofthese fabulousmachinestobemade,forwhenthewarended ChiltonAircraftresumedbusinessbybuildingthe firstOlympiasailplanebasedontheGermanMeise glider.Sadly,theHon.AndrewDalrymplewaskilled inaflyingaccidentonChristmasDay1945,bringing toanendamostfruitfulaviationpartnership.The sailplanerightswerepassedontoElliottsofNewbury andtheChiltonAircraftcompanywasfolded.However.theaircraftliveoninthehandsofdedicated enthusiastslikeTomHayes,whorebuiltG-AFGH whentheVintageAircraftClubwasfirstformedand re-enginedherwitha55h.p.Lycomingflatfour.With theadditionofanenclosedcanopytheaircrafthasthe appearanceofaminiaturelighteranddrawsacrowd atanymeeting.

Oursisanassociationoffriends,friendswitha commoninterest.ManyaretheridesI'veenjoyedin othermembersaircraftduringthepastsevenoreight yearsandmanytimes,particularlyatSywell,I've foundmyselfaloftinapassengerseatwithinminutes ofhavingmettheownerofthatparticularaircraft. Whatbettertestimonytothehealthystateofthespirit ofourmovement?

Ithadneverreallyoccurredtomeuntilafellow memberbroachedthe'Insuranceaspect'tomethat, had1beenkilledflyinginoneofmygenerousfriend's aircraftasapassenger,thenitisveryprobablethatmy

dependant'ssolictorwouldmostlikelyhavebeenseekingsubstantialawardsfrommygenerouspilot,or perhapsevenhiswife,hadhenotsurvivedour imaginedaccident.

Well,O.K.,Ithought,hewoulddoubtlessbe insuredforsuchaneventuality.But,saidmyfriend, "Forhowmuch"?Myownaircraftisinsuredonwhat Ibelievetobeafairlytypicalbasis:thehullisinsured for£2,000.ThenIhavethirdpartyliability(excluding passengers)for£100,000andthepassengerseatfora maximumof£25.000.ThePremiumforallthisis £153.Ioutlinedallthistomyfriend(anex-insurance clerk)whothenaskedmeif1everreadthenewspapers and,ifso.hadInoticedthecurrentawardsbeingmade topeopleinjuredincarcrashes—tosaynothingof thesettlementstodependantsofpeoplekilled.Since thenFreadsuchcaseswithnewinterestandIthink nowknowwhysomeprivateownersatleastareless thangenerouswithrides.

TheWeeBeewasdesignedandbuilthereinSan Diegoandflownbrieflyherebeforeappearinginthe RoyalAirForcePageantinthesummerof1949(not 1947asinthearticle)byKenS.CowardandAssociatesasahome-builtproject.ThetriptoEnglandand theappearanceintheAirShowwassponsoredbythe London DailyExpress newspaper.TheWeeBeemade oneflightattheAirShowandappearedatthe NationalAirRaceshereintheU.S.A.ontheway home.Theairplanenowreposesinthe.AirMuseumat BalboaParkhereinSanDiego.

Intheupperphoto,KarlMontijoisatthecontrols ofthislittleairplane(sosmallthatthepilotlayprone onitandnotinit).Atthetime,itwasthesmallest pilotedairplaneintheworld(grossweightwith185lb. pilotis385lbs.),andprobablystillis.Karland1went toEnglandwiththeWeeBee—Karlaspilotandthe undersignedasgroundcrew(thatis1adjustingthe safetyharnessforKarlintheupperphoto).

Thecockpithasbeenenlargedslightly,ashasthe wingdihedral.Thestructurehasbeengreatlysimplifiedtoeaseamateurconstruction.Thismachineisa two-seat.side-by-sideaircraft,hasalowwingof rectangularplanformandatricyclelandinggear.The basicconstructionmaterialis2024-T3Aluminiumand 4130steeltubeandsheet.Therearenodouble curvatureskinsandaminimumofformblocksare usedtomanufacturecomponents

Thewingisa15"„thicknesslaminarflowsection. withthesparlocatedatthemaximumthickness,the wholewingisasingleunitandisfixedtothefuselage withfourbolts.Seats,controlcolumnandflaplever arefixedtothewing.andtheelevatortrimisattached toaboxbetweentheseats.Theaileronsandflapsare piano-hingedtothebottomskin.Aileronsaremass balancedandhaveadifferentialaction.whiletheflaps havethreepositions.Thetailplaneisall-flyingwith ananti-servotab,thepurposeofthistabistoprovide adequatestickforcesaswellastrimmingtheaircraft. Acable-operatedrudderisfitted.

Thefuselagehasanormalstructureofframes, longeronsandstiessedskins.Thebubblecanopyopens backwards.Abaggagecompartmentisprovidedwith acapacityof40Ibs.Themainlandinggearisfixed directlytothemainsparandthenosegearisattached totheenginebearers.Differentialbrakesaretoe operated.

WearepleasedtoreportthattheOfficehavealready receivednumerousenquiriesandapplicationsforthis competition.Setoutbelow,andillustratedopposite,are detailsofoneofthecontenders.Incidentally,other would-bedesignersneednotworry,wewillnotpublish detailsoftheirparticularentrywithoutpermission.So don'tletthatputyouoff.

Mr.Deacon'sproposedprojecthasnotyet,ofcourse, beenvettedbythecompetitionscommitteeandthe statementshemakesarehisown.However,nethink thissuffficientlyinteresting,justtoletyouseethatat leastonememberhasgothisideasdownonpaper.

ForallthereasonsstatedatthePFA.Design Symposiumlastyear,thefore-planedconceptproposedismostlikelytosucceedbecauseofitsinherent economyofmassandenergy.

DavidLockspeiserandhis"taillirst-experimental aircrafthasshownthewaytonewbreakthroughsat ourendofaviation.AlthoughtheDrive-'n-Flydesign wasconceivedpriortoSywell'76fortheP.F.A.design competition,itwaswildlyexcitingtowatchthespirited displayofLockspeiserandhisbrainchild.Thesheer uphillslogofconvincingcommercetobacksucha venture Must havebeentraumatic.TheWright Brothers,andtheywerenofools,werethe fifst toIly thisconfiguration.Unfortunatelywithoutthebenefit of'hindsightandmoreadvancedaerodynamicknowhowavailabletoday,theyabandonedtheconcept.So newlifeistohebreathedintoonoldconceptwhich couldprovetobethemostsignificantadvance,eaLIsed throughneed,totakeplacethisdecadeinlight aviation.

Considertheseadvantagesoftheconnord.Inflight, increasedcomfortbecauseofthereducednoiseofthe rearengineandshroudedpropeller!Alsomostconventionalaircraftprovideliftwithmainplanesonly, whereasthecannarddemandsthatitsharesomeofthe load,thusthemainwingareamaybereduced.The structuralweightofthefuselage,thatintheconventionaltypemerelycarriesthestabalizers,inthe cannard,theengMe,crew,payloadondservicesare carried.thusthecannardfuselageismoreweight effective,whichallowsthespin-offsofbetterpowerto weightratio,thusbetterfueleconomy,lesshangarage required,etc.etc.ThefinaldevelopmentoftheDeacon conceptenablesthehithertoimpracticable'flyablecar' whichIprefertocalla'drive-M-11y'.

Itwouldbepoweredbytwoengines,oneasmall engine,drivingthroughavariablespeedtransmission, theroadwheelsandcapableof50m.p.h.,whilethe minimalniainengine,drivingamulti-bladepropellor inashroudforefficiency.

Theroadwheelsaredrivenduringthetakeoffrun, theroadenginepowerthcnbeingtransferredtoassist thepropellerviafluiddrive,thusashorttakeoffis assured.

Afeatureofthisengineco-operationlayout,isthe bestpower-to-weightratio,thatis,theenginesmay operateatthemaximumefficiencyintheirrespective roles,withouttheneedfor'overload'designweiaht andwear.

Foldingthe'controlsurfacefree'mainplanes, throughthefulllengthflaphingeandthenrotatingthe wholewing18()",swingingthemforwardtobestowed alongsidethefuselage,thusforming'runningboards', provedtobethemostdifficultdesignproblem.

Theslab-elevoncontrolsformingtheforeplane presentedlittleproblem.Furthercontroliseffectedvia

aero-dynamicsurfacessituatedinthehighspeedairflowintothepropellerducting.

ThisisouroldestcurrentTrophyandwaspresented byourfirstPresident,SirPeterMasefield,uponhis retirementfromofficein1957.Ittakestheformofa clock,setwithinthebaseofalightaircraftpropellor andwaspresentedtotheGroup,judgedeachyearto bethemostefficientinthePEA.Havingbeenwonfor tineeyearsinsuccessionbytheArmstrongWhitworth FlyineGroup,theywereallowedtokeepit,anditwas notuntilthesameGroup,in1975agreedtoits e-presentation,thatthecompetitionwasrevived.In consultationwithSirPeterMasefield,thetermsof tferencehavebeenamendedtotakeaccountof changesinthePFAorganisation,asaresultofwhich hecompetitionisopentoGroups.StrutsandSquadrons.Thenewtermsofreferencealsomakequiteclear
