Bycomparison,the1/2-mil.chartisareal "hogwash"ofinformation.Basicallydesignedfor ratherfasteraircraft,cruisingatgreaterheights,it alsoassumesthattheywillbegoingfurtherandmay makeuseofnumerousaidswhichthe abinitio pilot willnothavegainedexperiencein.Itisthereforea muchmore"generalpurpose"publicationandonce youacceptthat,thetemptationistoputeverything onitwhichcouldpossiblybeneeded,byanyone, anywhere.

Bettertobringupthestudentonthe1/4-mil,then converthimtothe1/2-mil,later,sothathehasa workingknowledgeofmap-readingasasubject,and canusemorethanonechartaccordingtothepurpose ofhisflight.Amuchmoreflexibleattitude.Of course,ifoneisgoingreallyIMC,itistheAerador Jeppersoncharttowhichweturnourattention.But, whatofthebasicplanandwhathappensifwegeta radiofailureandhavetofallbackonmap-readingin murkyconditions?Whynotalsohavetheplanona suitabletopographicalchartjustincasewehaveto abandontheblack-boxmethods,whicharenever totallyreliable,inanycase?

Thereisagrowingtendencytoclutterthe1/2-mil. withinformationsuchasVDFfrequenciesandlots ofotherincidentals,muchofwhichoughtnottobe thereandshouldbegainedfromanAeradguideat theplanningstage,thatisbeforetheneedactually arises.Lowlevelcontrolledairspaceofallsortswill havetoappearonallcharts,butopt/2-mMscale,the reallycomplexshapesandverticaldemarcationscan bequiteconfusing.Thesituationcertainlycanlooka lotmorehopefulin1/4-mil.andsotherealansweris tocarrybothcharts,bereadytouseboth,and thereforeoftenhavetheplandrawnonboth.
