Thisisbeingwrittenjustbeforethe GeneralElection.Whenyoureaditthe newGoveinmentwillbeinoffice,andwe thePFA,willknowinwhatwaysifany itislikelytobenehtus.Butitmust be clearalreadythatwhoevergetsinweare unlikelytogetcheaperpetrol,lower landingkes,orreducedhangaragelutes: neitherarewelikelytohavetofightany lesshardtoretainsyhatwehave_Nowis thereforeagoodmomenttolakealook alourselves;ouraimsandobjects:the meansweusetoattainthem:andour strengthsandweaknesses.

derousapplausewhichgreetedtheaWalrd oftheRoderickTurnerMemorialTrophy atSvwelltoourHeadofEngineering, JohnWalker.Financehastakenamuch needed turnforthebettersinceour Treasurerhasobtainedaudits:instituted improvedbookkeeping,andinitiateda systemofstockcontrol.Butadministrationhaslaggedinalesshappystate, andIhavehadtheimpressionthatthere arememberswhohavelettisolated,cut offandevenneglected.

Theteasonsforthisaremany;butone whichIknowwilldistressallourmem bersistheunfortunatecaraccidenttoMiss Marshjustatthetimewhenshewas makingmostvaliantinroadsintothetask ofhelpingruntheShorehamoffice.We allwishheraspeedyandfullrecovery.In themeantimeofficeworkhasbeentackled byCommitteemembersintheirspate time.ifindeedsuchmenastheChairman,theHeadofEngineeringandthe Treasurercanbesaidtohavesucha thing!However,worknowinprogress convincesmethatlaythetimethisis publishedouradministration,andwithit communicationwithmemberswillshow markedimprovements.InparticularI refertotheappointmentofnewoffice staff;andtheallocationofspecificresponsibilitiesforvariousaspectsofPEA administrationtoparticularcommittee members-;andtotheworkdonetoimproveofficemanagementandprocedures. ItisinthiscontextthatIwishtomake specialreferencetoourPopularFlying MagazineNotonlyisittheprincipal servicewhichmanymembersget;itisalso ourmostimportantmeansofcommunicationIwouldlikethereforetosee includedinitsuchregularfeaturesas newsfromStrutsandGroups.with

namesandaddresses:newsfromeach PEACommittee;namesofCommittee membersresponsibleforparticularfunctions,e.g.RobinOwen.yourFICWStrut liasonmember,andJackGowlandfor Groups.Squadronnews(MikeYaiseyis formingaLutonMinorSquadron)and(ff courseacalendarofforthcomingevents. Allthiswillimposeaconsiderableloadon theeditorswho.Imustremindyou,are unpaidvolunteers.whoserewardisdoing agoodjobforthePEA.

TomaketheEditor'sjobpossibledemandssupportfronteverybodyelse,and inparticularfromallthoseofficialsand memberswhocanprovidetheinformation listedabove.MayIaskyouonbehalfof theEditorstorespondtothisappeal,and sotohelpmakePEthekindofcommunicationssystemweneed.Itisnot puttingittoostronglytosaythatthclifebloodofthePEAisitsmagazine,without whichtheseparatepartsofourAssociationwillwitheranddie.Thiscannot be allowed.Onthecontrary,ifmyreadingof futureeventsiscorrect,thereisthe greatestneedforusalltoensurethatwe areawellorganisedcohesiveforce,in whichweareallinclosetouchwitheach otherandpreparedforsomehardlights. Therearetimes,especiallywhenIhavebeen strugglingforhourswithnoapparentresult,whenI lookbackandwonderwhy,inviewofmytotallackof leverstartedonafoolenterpriselikethe buildingofaV.P.I.Thercareothertimes,most eveningsinfact,whenIdriveintothegarageandsee thelong,slimlinesofthefuselagetakingshapeonthe jiatableandrealisewithwonderthatthisthMgmay eventuallytakewingsandfly.

Itis,Ithink,importantnottolooktoofarahead. Tieateachlittlejobasanendinitself,evenifitisonly themakingandfittingofapieceofquarterroundtoa cockpitgusset.Thatwaytheworkwillbebetterdone andonewillcontinuallysurpriseanddelightoneself whenalotoflittlejobssuddenlyadduptoonebig one.

Ihadpotteredalongforweekscuttingoutflatpieces ofply,makingupbulkheads,firewallandsternpost andlayingoutandmakingfuselagesides.

Friendswhocametosee''theaeroplane"seemed quiteunimpressedwithmypilesofflatply,eventhe fuselagesideswithstiffenersneatlygussetedtothe longeronsfailedtoarousemorethanpoliteapplause.

InordertoentertainmypublicFevenwentsofaras tomakeuptheinstrumentpanel,completewith instruments,boltittothebulkheadandstickitinthe vicewheretheycouldseeandadmireit.

Then,oneeveningFcamehometofindmywifehad goneoutbabysittingforthegrandchildren.The previouseveningIhadfinishedworkonthesecond fuselagesideso,aftertea.Ilifteditoutofthejigand beganprisingthejigblocksoffthetable.

Iclearedandcleanedthetableandwentontostrike thecentrelineandmarkoutthepositionsforthe four-by-twoblockstowhichthebulkheadshavetobe clampedforassembly.

Foronceeverythinawentright.TheIbur-by-iwo wastohandandonlyneededatouchoftheplaneto

squareitup—alwayscheckeverythingforsquareness. Ihavelearntbybitterexperience,itveryseldomis square.Ihaddecidedtoboltratherthanspikethe four-by-twotothetableandsurprisinglyIfounda hoardofquarterinchboltsbyfiveincheslongleft overfromrebuildingagaragefourteenyearsago.

InnotimeatallIhadtheblockssetup.Iclamped thebulkheadsandthefirewalltotheblocks.Theseat anditssupportdroppedintoplaceandIlookedatit allandwondered,wouldthesidesfitafterallthis? Mightaswelltry.

Thefirstsideslippedintoplace,anice,tightlitatall points.Thesecondfollowed.Abarcrampjustahead ofthemainbulkheadandacoupleofoneinchblocks tackedtothetableoneithersidetopreventany disasters.Ipulledthetailendsinandlashedthemto thesternpostwithalengthofcordandstoodback.

Miraculouslyitlookedlikeanaeroplane.I-walked allrounditadmiringit.Igotthestep-ladderand climbedgingerlyintothecockpit.JustasgingerlyI climbedoutandwentinsearchofcushions.

Aneighbour,walkinghisdog,realisedsomething wasupandcameintoinvestigate.Webothtriedthe cockpitforsizeandwerestandinabackadmiringthe threedimensionalaeroplaneoverafewcansofbeer whenmywifearrived.

FromsomewheresheunearthedaflatcapandIhad togetbackinthecockpitwiththecaponbacktofront. doinganOrvilleWright.

Havingtotakeitallapartnextmorningtostart gluingwasaterribleanti-climax.Itwasawholeweekendbeforeitwasonceagainmoreorlessthree dimensional.

Atthispointitlookedasthoughthefuselagewas nearlyfinishedsoIorderedupmaterialsforthe rudderandstabilatorbutitwasmanyalongweek aftertheyhadarrivedbeforeIwasreadytoworkon them.

Week-endafterweek-endwentbyeachwithitstally ofafewcross-stiffenersinstalledorplygussetsglued inplace.Thefiddlingstagearrivedwherepartshadto bemarkedandmaskedoffandpaintedbeforethey couldbegluedinplace.Onehastowaitforpaintto dryandunlessonehasplannedaheadforitonecan losemostofaweek-endoveracoupleoftopskins.

Ipaintedtheinsidewhitesinceifonewantsto inspectanythinginsideitwouldbedifficulttoseemuch againstnon-reflectivevarnishedsurfaces.Intheenclosedportionofthefuselageaftofthecockpitmy inspectorwouldonlyallowmeonecoatofwhitepaint overthecolourlessprimerinordertokeeptheweight withinbounds.

havealwaysdislikedpaintingasbeinganecessary butunproductivechore,andthepaintingofthis relatily'elyintricatestructurenearlydrovemeto distraction.Tryingtopeerundercrosspiecesor longeronstoseethatallthesurfaceswerecoveredgot paintintomyhairandallovermysweater.Mylittle aeroplanemaynotmeritmanysuperlativesbutitwill certainlybethefluffiest.

Afrienddonatedacastorjusttherightsizeforthe tailwheelsoIwenttoourlocalforgeandmachineshop togetthetailwheelassemblymadeuponitsspring steelleg.Theyweredelightedtofindthemselves transportedfromthefieldofagriculturalmachinery intotheaerospaceindustryanddidasuperbjobata giveawayprice.Itookithomerejoicing,tappedit throughtheslotinthesternpostandbolteditinplace. ThenIhadtotakeitoutagainforpaintingandtofit thetopandbottomskinsattheafterendwhichare speciallystiffenedtotaketherudderbushes.

Thesamelittlemachineshopworkedupthenylon rudderbushesformeandIfittedtheminplaceusing awoodenmandrilturnedtotwoinchesdiametersince theruddertubehadnotarrivedandIwantedtoclose inthefuselage.

Icutoutallthepartsforthecontrolcolumntosize andthenselotapedthemtogetherformyinspectorto takethemtoacertifiedwelderofhisacquaintance,and impatientlyawaitedtheirreturnsothatIcouldinstall thestickanddoalittlesimulatedflying.

InthemeantimeIorderedasuperbcushionfroma neighbouringyacht-builder.AsaV.P.'senduranceis, hopefully,aboutfourhoursandtheseatisanunyieldingpieceofhalfinchply-wood,onecouldfinish uplikethelittleLancashireladwho,onemerging fromanair-raidshelterafteranallnightblitzon Manchester,washeardtoremark"Ee,bygum.Mum, mybum'snumb".

Ihadthecushionoffourinchthickfoamrubber tailoredtotheshapeoftheseatandfittedwithpress studsthatclipunderneathsothatsouvenirhuntersat Sywellwouldhavedifficultyinremovingit.Noseat backisprovidedintheplanssoIgotanultra-lightone fromafirmwhomaketypists'chairs_Bothcushions arecoveredinwaterproofzippedcases.Iintendtobe themostcomfortableofV.P.1pilots.

Oneofthemoreunusualjobsturnedouttobethe makingofthefibreglassfairingaftofthecockpit.I neverexpectedtofindthatacoupleoftrowelswould bepartofanaeroplanebuilder'stook-kit.

"Makeupaplaster-of-Parismould"saytheinstructionsasthoughitissomethingonedoesevery day.Isearchedinvainthroughallmytextbooksfor moredetailedinstructionsandfinallyworkedoutfor myselfthefollowingmethodwhichIthinkIwould useagainindefaultofanybettersuggestions.

Thedrawingsgiveaplanviewofthefairinganda fore-and-aftsectionthroughit.Ilaidouttheplan viewonapieceofscrapplywoodandthesectionona pieceofoneinchplank.Ilaidapieceofhalfinch

blockboardagainstthebackoftheaftbulkheadwhere itprojectsabovetheafterdeckofthefuselage,marked itoffandcutitout.Isetthisprofileupontheplywood baseandnaileditinpositionwithoneinchbyone inchblocks.DownthecentreofthebaseIsetupthe longitudinalsectionprofileandnailedthewholelot together.

Ithengotapileofoldnewspapers.serumpled themuppagebypage.dippedeachpieceinwaterand squasheditintoplaceonthebaseboarduntilIhadthe roughshapeofthefairinginwetpaper.

Ihadboughttenpoundsofmouldingplasterwhich Ithoughtwouldbeplenty.ThisImixedupwithwater andslappedontopofthepapershape,andofcourse, itwasnowherenearenough.

IhadtogetthecaroutlateonaSaturdayafternoon andtourallthechemistsshopswitInnaradiusoffive iridesbuyinguptheirstocksofplaster-of-Paris.Igot anotherfifteenpoundsinthiswayanditstillwasnot enough.ThefollowingMondayIboughtanotherten poundsofmouldingplasterandthatjustdidthejob. Soforthislittlefairingoneneedsaboutfortypounds ofplaster.Mouldingplasterismuchbetterthan plaster-of-Pariswhichshrinksabominably.

Istartedtodotheroughmouldingwithmyhands. buttheplasterstuckmyfingerstogetherandgot itselfeverywherehutonthemould.Isoonfound(hat itworkedmuchmoreeasilyusingawettrowelIfound too,thatafairlysloppymixismucheasierandquicker tohandle.

ForthefinalshapingtipIfoundthattheonlytools whichwereofanyusewereaSurformblockplane.a StanleysmoothingplaneandaoneinchchiselM) sandingdisccloggedupimmediatelyandsodid ordinarysandpaper.Oneessentialtoolisawirebrush forcleaningoutthesurformplaneafteraboutever) thirdstroke.

Thissortofsculptureproducesapervasivedust andaconsiderablethirst,sotoavoiddomestic acrimonyarisingfrontchalkyfootprintsonpolished floorsitisaswelltohaveastockofbeeractuallyat thesiteofthework.

BeforestartingonthefibreglassIwenttoapractical demonstrationgivenbythefirmwhosuppliedthe materials.Thishelpedtogivemealittlemuchneeded confidence.Ihaveneverlikedthestuff,regardingitas anunnaturalandunsympatheticmaterialandits practitionersasdabblersinanecromanticblackart. TheyoungdemonstratormadethewholethMg seemridiculouslysimple,inoreso,infact.thanit turnedoutinpracticetobe.

Onepointthatworriedmewasareportinthe Americanjournal-SportAviation-totheefTectthat anumberofcaseshadarisenoffibreglassfueltanks flakingaftersometimeinuse.Imentionedthistothe demonstratorwhosaidthatthisdidhappeninthe caseoftanksmadewithordinary,generalpurpose, resin.Itisessentialtouseachemicalresistantresin for fueltanksandthisproblemshouldnotariseifthe correctresinisemployed.Fdohopeheisright.Asone mightexpectthespecialresinismuchmoreexpensive thanthegeneralpurposeone.

Icameawayloadedwithyardsofglassmatand Melinexsheeting,generalpurposeresin,chemical resistantresin,fireresistantwaxresin(forcoatingall exposedsurfaces),barriercream,cleansingcream, bottlesofcatalyst.brushcleaner,brushes,aroller, glasstape,releaseagents,andastackofpapercups.

CamethegreatdayandIlaideverythingoutonthe jigtable.ThenightbeforeIhadpaintedthemould withtwocoatsofreleaseagentNoI.asealantsshich driedveryquickl).andacoatofreleaseagentNo. whichdidnotshowanysignofthingatallandgas

stillwetthenextmorning.

InfinediatelyongettingupinthemorningIhad driventhecarsoutofthegarage.closedthedoorsand putthefanheateronfullblasttobringthetemperatureupto60F.

Icoatedmyhandswithbarriercreamandstudied theinstructionsheet,andherecamethefirstand.to tellthetruth,theonlysnag.Themixofcatalystto resinwasgiveninc.c.'sperpound.Ittookmeamessy hourwithallmywife'scookbookstoworkoutthat thisamountedtooneteaspoonful!ofcatalysttoone papercupofresin.Fromthenonallwentwell.

Ipaintedthemouldwithresin,slappedonapre-cut sheet or glassmat.pouredmoreresinontopand beganstipplinghardwithabrush.Thestiffsheetof matmeltedontothemouldandIwenttoworkwith theroller.

Ashortpausetomixtwomorecupsofresin.On withthenextsheetofmat,morestipplingandrolling andthethird,andfinalsheetwasonandcuringall withinfortyminutes.

Itookmybeerbreakwhichsomehowextendedto anhourandahalf,whichwastoolong,sothat trinfiningroundthemouldwithaStanleyknifewas veryhardgoingandIhadtofinishoffwithachisel

ThefairingliftedcleanlyoffthemouldandItriedit ontotheaeroplane.Amazinglyitfittedperfectly.Ileft ittocureforabitlongerandafteraspellofadnPrationandself-congratulation I wentofftolunch.

QuiteawhileafterlunchIreplacedthefairingon themouldanddrilledouttheMspectionholeontop usingthetankcutterthatIhadusedforthefuselage inspectionholes,thenIwashedthereleaseagentoff theinsideofthefairing,sandedthematingsurfaces. daubedresinonthetopoftheafterbulkheadandonto thefuselagedeckwherethefairingwouldsitandput itgentlyintoplace.Probablyquiteunnecessaril) drilledanumberofholeswithmysmallestdrilland nailedthefairingtothebulkheadwithbrassbrads beforeresinandglasstapingroundthcjointbetween thebaseofthefairingandthefuselagesidesandtop deck.Thislastwasamessyjobanddidnotlooktoo goodwhenitwasdone.butintheeventitsanded downtoareasonablefinish_

Ihadhopedtosavethemouldforsomeoneelsehut intheeventitcrackedapartwhenItriedtotakeitoff thejigtable.Incrediblytheplasterconcavesandthe papertheywereformedoncompletelyfilledastandard PopularFlyinu,NmenTher-Dceenther.1074

rubbishbinanditweighedsoheavythatthedustmen wouldnotremoveitsothatIhadtoburnthepaper anddisposeoftheplasterontheCouncilstip.

Fullofconfidenceaftermyrelativesuccesswiththe cockpitfairingIpreparedtotacklethepetroltank, whichismouldedintotheforwardfuselagefairing.It wasatthisstagethatIhadavisitfromDavid,another V. P.I builder,whogavemealotofusefultipssothat muchofwhatfollowsisduetohim—thesuccessful bits.

Iboughtasheetoflightalloytomaketheformer forthetank,butasIwantedtouseitagaintocutout fromitpatternsforthewingandstabilatorribsIhad tokeepthesheetintactandcouldnottrimittoshape. ThiswasamistakeandIshouldhavedamnedthe expense.Theweightofthesheethangingbelowthe fuselageoneithersidecausedittobulgeslightlyoff thesidesoftheforwardbulkheadandthisentailed someratherfiddlingfillingafterwards.

Thewholeofthismouldinghadtobecarriedoutin chemicalresistantresin.

ThemajormistakethatImadeatthisstagewasin

willkeepyourprizedcopies

beingoverenthusiasticwiththerollersothatIput ripplesintothealloyformerwhichofcourseappeared onthefinishedsurfaceofthemoulding.

WiththreelayersofmatontheformerIfinishedoff bylayingasheetof"Melinex"overthetopandrolling iton,workingfromthecentreoutwardstoexcludethe airThefinalsurfacefinishwaslovely,but—oh,those ripples!

Thetankends,bottomandbafflesareallmadeout offlatsheet.Theplanscallfor"Alsynite–butasthis, oritsequivalentseemhardtogetImademyownby layingasheetof"Melinex–onthe ji2 table,building upthreelayersofglassmatonit,placingasheetof "Melinexoverallandrollingouttheairworkingfrom thecentreoutwards.FinallyIplacedasheetofwindow glassontopandleftittocure.

I'vejustreceived"PopularFlying"forJuly-Aug., andwasheart-brokentofindthattherewasno mentionofmysmalleffortstokeeptheBritishAutogyroflagflying!On13JulyIflewoneofmyoldType WA-I16aircraft,witha60hpFranklinengine,ona newautogyroclass worldrecord200km. closedcircuit non-stopdistanceflightof670kilometers(415miles). Averagespeedwas77.5mphat23mpg(subjectto officialconfirmation).(5hours20mins,ontheactual circuit).

Seriously,Ithoughtthatyouwouldhaveheardof thisattempt.AirB-Pwerecoveringthepublicityside andIwastoobusywiththemainobjectivetobother withthisside.Itgotamentionin"FlightInternational".

Coupledwiththeotherultimatespeedandheight recordsalreadyheldbythe Wallisautogyros, this latestattemptshouldhelptoprovethepractical qualitiesoftheultra-lightautogyrowhenproperly designed,builtandflown.

Ineverseemtobeabletogetevenaphotoofmy newmachinesinflight,socannothelpoutinthis respect.Ihaven'tbeenabletoacquireanyfromB-P either(theirin-flightphotosontheattemptareunlikelytobemuchgood,therange,evenwhendropping thelong-rangetankatColtishall,probablybeingtoo great).IfIgetadecentshotinthenearfuture.I'llsend oneon,butIfinditdifficulttofindanyonetopointa cameral.

Theattemptwasrenderedpossibleonlybythevery kindco-operationbypersonnelfromRoyalAirForce Coltishall,WestRaynham&EasternRadar,Watton. TheymannedtheturningpointsatColtishall,West RaynhamandaroadjunctionnearHardingham villageat6a.m.ontheincreasinglydampmorningof 13July.Theflightwaslargelyinheavyrain.Iwasjust unabletocompletetheseventhcircuitofthecourse, topartakeofabottleofcelebratorychampagne(I didn'tknowofthisatthetime!)andfeltitexpedient toturnbacktolandhereaftertheseventhturningat Hardingham.

Theaircraftnevermissedabeatontheflight,and1 nowknowthatIcouldliftfarmorefuel.Witha maximumspeedofwellover100mphthisisquitea usefulaircraft.From1965to1970ithadbeenoperated inCeylonas4R-ACK.ThenithadbeenMcCulloch powered.1draggeditfrom"hibernation"attheback ofmy"hangar"on1January,fittingaWallis-modified Franklin2-A-120,60hptwincylinderengine.There isanelevengalloninternalfueltank,goodforthree hoursplussomereserve.

G-BAADwastwoyearsinbuilding,buttheowner saysthatoftenforquitelongperiodshehadtoneglect italtogether.Heisabusymanrunninghisown business.Materialsusedhavealreadybeenmentioned. Thefuselageisaplywoodbox,stiffenedwithIongerons,struts,stringers,andbulkheads,allinwood. Thewinghastwospars;parallelleadingandtrailing edges,andinconsequenceallribsaretothesame pattern.Itisbracedbydiagonalstrutsincompression, andthecompressionloadsacrossthefuselagearc takenbyheftywoodenmemberswhichformpartof thefuselagestructure.

Theundercarriagecomprisesasinglealuminium membershapedlikeaninverted"Li.andissolidly bracedbytierodswhichareintensionunderlanding loads,andwhichpreventthelegsfromsplayingoutwards.Thereisnospringingofanysort,andtheonly softeningandshockabsorbinginthesystemisthat whichisprovidedbytherubber inflatedtyres.Wheelbrakesare fitted.andG-BAADhasthe addedrefinementofasteerable tailwheel_

Thetailunitisunusualforan ultralightsinceboth"stabilator-andrudderarefully moving,andtherearenofixed surfaces.Botharefittedwith wellharmonisedantiservo tabs,andthestabilatorismass balanced.Therearenopilot controlledtrimtabsonany surfaces,butG-BAADisfitted withabiasarrangementonthe sticktoprovidechangesintrim feelasbetweentakeoffconditions,normalflight,andengineoffglide.Theamountof biasrequiredtoeliminatestick loadsisverysmall,anditschief advantageistoenabletheaircrafttobetrimmedtoflyhands offforprolongedperiodsduringcrosscountryflights.The aircraftisstableaboutallaxes, andthewinghasasixdegree dihedralwhichcontributesto this.

POWERPLANT

G-BAADusesa1600ccVolkswagenenginefroma scrapcar.MostsufferingVWcarsendtheircareers becauseoffrontenddamage,andagoodVWengine isnottoodifficulttoacquire.Itisofcoursenecessary todoagooddealofworkontheenginetorenderit suitableforaircraftuse;forexample,dualignition entailsdrillingthecylinderheadstotakeasecondset ofplugs;andadualmagnetoanddrivemustbefitted.

ThePopularFlyingAssociationsellapprovedplans fordoingthiswork,andthecurrentcostofthese(by DonPeacock)is£6forcompletesetofplansand instruction.TheVWengineflyinginG-BAADisas sweetasanut,andhumsawayatamaximum3,300 rpmlikeasmalldynamoonthefrontoftheaircraft.

Fuelconsumptionistwototwo-and-a-halfgallonsper hour,andissuppliedfroma6%gallonfibreglasstank whoseuppersideformsthetopdeckingofthefuselage betweenthefrontbulkheadandthewindshield.

THECOCKPIT

Thisisopen,andfairlybasic.G-BAADhasavery neatbasicinstrumentpanel,whichincludesaturn andslip:engineinstruments,whichcompriserev counter,oilpressureandtemperaturegaugesare located,togetherwiththedualignitionswitchonan auxiliarypanelbythepilot'sleftleg.Throttle,carburettorhotair,andafrictioncontrolleverare locatedbyone'slefthandatseatlevel,whilstinthe samepositionbutontheopposite(starboard)sidea pairofleversoperatethebrakesofthemainwheels. Thepilot'sseatingpositionisfairlyupright,andapart fromtheverygoodandhighwindshield,whosetube framealsodoublesasprotectionincaseofoverturning,thepilotfeelssomewhatexposedtothefresh air:inthewinteratanyrate,itiscertainlynotthesort ofcockpitforcissypilotsbroughtupinheatedcabins! InCanadathereisatleastoneall-the-year-roundpilot flyingaVP-Iwithanenclosedcockpit.Intheairthe draughtseemstocomefrom behindtheshoulders,andthe bigwindshieldgivesgoodenough protectiontoflywithoutgoggles;thecoldestandworst draughtsseemtobewhen taxyingoutacrosswindonthe ground.

HANDLING

TheVP-Isitsontheground ataflattishangleofattack,and theviewoverthenoseisgood atalltimes.Groundcontrol withthesteerabletailwheelis excellent,andtheaircraftis bothstableandcontrollablein crosswinds.Onthegrassat Sywelltherewasneveratally timeneedtotouchthewheel brakesdespiteatentofifteen knotwind.Ontakeofftheflat angleofattacktakesabitof gettingusedto.Thesloping nosemakesitfeelasthoughthe tailishigherthanitreallyis, andiftheaircraftisallowedto run withoutraisingthetail enoughintheinitialstagesof takeoffaprematureattemptto lifttheaircraftofftheground canresultinnothiigmorethanpushingthetailwheel backintothemudandprolongingthewholebusiness. ThesameeffectcaIbeobservedinaTurbulent,but inthecaseoftheVP-Ithegroundangleisflatter,and theeffectmuchmorepronounced.Butdespitethis sortofmishandlingtheVP-Igetsairbornequitefast (stillairtake-offdistanceisgivenas500feetonahard surface)andclimbsawayverywellat60knots.Higher up,aquickcheckagainstthewatchsuggestedthatthe maximumrateofclimbisattainedat55knotsIAS. Rateofclimbwasnotchecked,butthespecification gives800feetasthedistancefromstarttotakeoff,in stillair,tocleara50footobstacle.Rateofclimbis certainlyasgoodasaNipper.

Controlsfeelsomewhatoldfashioned.Untilone realisesthatthesquarecutaileronsattheendofthose longwingsexertconsiderabledrag,itiseasyto initiateaturnbyrollingintoitandexpectingamodern aircrafttypeturn,needinglittleornouseofrudderto preventyaw.TheVP-Iopencockpitonacoldday soonwakesoneup,andjustliketheTiger(partic-

ularlytheTigerSeaplane!),makesonewatchthe needleandballtoexecuteaproperlycordinateturn. Innormalcruisingat70to75knotsIASallcontrols arenicelycoordinated,andtheaircraftcanbetrimmed toflyhandsandfeetoff.Itisnotatfirsteasytogetthe VP-1setinlevelflight:firstlytheslopingnoseand highwindshieldprovidenoeasyreferencepoints;but moreimportantly,likesomeothersmalllowpowered aircrafttheVP-1seemstorequireacertainknackto getitmoving.Onecanlabourslightlynoseupata particularpowersettingandabout60/65knots, neithergainingnorlosingheight;andthen,without alteringthepowersettingatall,lowerthenose slightly,gatherspeed(andofcoursesomemorerpm) andonresuminglevelflight,continueatsomeeightor nineknotsfasterthanbeforewithouthavingtouched thethrottleatall.Ratherlikegettingahydroplane ontothestep.

Stallsarenormal,quicklyrecoverable,andresultin onlyaminutelossofheight.Withalittlepower,the VP-Icanbeheldnoddinginthestallinstillairalmost indefinitely.TheUSAtestshavecoveredspinning,and theaircraftisreportedtobehaveandrecovernormally: theseUSAspinstestswereconductedatanallup weightof750lbs,twenty-fivelbsofwhichincluded thetestpilot'sparachutewhichmusthavemadehim asomewhatsnugfitinthecockpit.Shoulderharness is,ofcourse,partofthestandarddesign,thatin0BAADbeinganRAFpattern.Stallingspeedwiththis pilot(185lbs)andthreequarterfuelloadusinga littlepowercameat43KnotsIAS.Whetherornot thisisatrueindicationofthelevelpoweroffstalling speedisdoubtful.Oneisalwaysalittlecarefulnotto allowaVWenginetoslowtoomuchintheair,forit isdifficult,andoftenimpossible,torestart;but assumingitwassomewherenearcorrectthena correctiontoTRUESpeedwouldmakethestall somewhereoftheorderof31/32KnotsTrue.The correctiontobeappliedatlowspeedsisconsiderable, andapparentlynotaltogetherreliable:thecorrection graphshownsuggeststhattheASIinthestandard installationover-readsbyaconsiderablespeedall throughtherange.Perhapsthisissomethingwhich requiresfurtherexamination.

Becauseofthewetandmuddyairfieldconditions (thiswasduringtheFebruarystorms)nocircuitsand landingswerepracticed,whichwouldhavebeen desirable.Theapproachspeedusedwas60knotsIAS, andatthisspeedthepilothasaperfectviewofhis intendedtouchdownpointatalltimes,andaglide

pathwhichis(inareasonablewind)neithertooflat nortoosteep.Becauseoftheflatgroundangleofthe VP-Itheflareoutisonlymoderate,andsomecareis necessaryNOTtotouchtailwheelfirst.This,if marked,canproduceanastypitchingmotionasthe aircraftisthrownfirstontothemainwheelsandthen backonthetailwheel.Therebeingnodampingor shockabsorbingintheundercarriageotherthanthat providedbythetyres,itissomethingtobeavoided. Practicesoon....wearetold...makesiteasyto avoidthisrockinghorsetrick;butbeingnewtothe business,anddespitetakingcaretolandonallthree atonce,weneverthelesstouchedalittletailfirst,and weredulyshownamildversionoftheeffect.The landingruniscommendablyshort,andisgiveninthe manualas600feetfromovera50ftobstacle.Once downtheaircraftrunsstraightandiseasilycontrollable.

One'schiefimpressionoftheVP-Iisthatitisan aircraftwhichmakesyouflyitproperly,andtellsyou quitesafely,butfirmly,ifyoufailtodoso.Itshould therefore,inculcategoodhabits,andinconsequence beasoundaircraftonwhichpilotscanbuilduptime andexperience.Thereisnoquestionaboutitsstrength anddurability,forboththedesignandprototypehave beenthoroughlytestedintheUSA,andtheconditions underwhichsuchaircraftarebuiltinthiscountry underPFAsupervisionensurethattheyarefitto obtaintheirCAACertificateofAirworthinessintheir appropriatecategorybeforebeingpermittedtofly. G-BAADisafineexampleofhowthePFAsystem works;aswinneroftheBestHomeBuiltCompetitionin1973onenaturallyexpectsahighstandard andthequalityoftheworkputintoitbyitsbuilder andowneriscertainlyasgoodas,orbetterthanIhave seenfromsomeaircraftfactories.ltisacraftsman's job,comparableinitsownwayintheskillswhichit embodies,withthecraftsmanshiponeseesingood gunsorfurniture.Therecanbeveryfewachievements quiteassatisfactoryasbuildingone'sownaeroplane: testingit;flyingitthereafterasarecreationandhobby. WorkontheTaylorMonoplanebeganafterJohn hadseenCyrilOakin'sexampleatSywell'73and Sywell'75isthetargetforcompletion.Asaschoolmasterinhandicraft.hisaeroplaneistakingshape quickerthanmostprojectsandboysfromtheHucknallNationalSecondarySchoolhavemadesomeof thedetailsfortheVWengineconversiontoDon Peacock'splans.

Ifhadtoidentifythequestionwhichisputtome mostoften,itwouldprobablybe,"Howdoldothis hang-checkbusinessonanultra-lightgyro?Icannot followtheinstructions-.Sincethehang-checkonan ultra-lightgyroistheequivalenttotheweight-andbalanceonafixedwingmachine,itisclearlyofthe greatestimportancetogetitexactlyright,soIam gladpeopledotakethetroubletoaskme.Incase thereareanywhoneedtoknowbuthesitatetowrite or'phone,Iamgoingtodescribethissimpletasknow

Firstofall,whatdoesahang-checkinvolve, generally?Thegyromustbesuspendedclearofthe ground,byaropeorcablewhichisattachedtothe boltwhichcarriestherotor(theteeterbolt).This particularboltpassesthroughthetwopillowblocks attachedtothetopofthemainbearinghousing.

Duringthehang-checkmeasurements,thecontrols mustbeapproximatelyatneutral,thepilotintheseat withabouthisnormalamountofflyingclothingon (thismaybequiteconsiderable,forflyinganaerated Bensen!)andthefueltankmaybefull,half-fullor empty,asisappropriatetothemachineinquestion.

Inattachingthesupportcableorropetotheteeter bolt,itiswisetouseaspecialattachmenttospread theloadacrosstheboltandsoproduceshearloadsin thedesignedmanner,notbendingloadswhichwill ruinaveryexpensive,veryhard-to-come-by"bolt. Figure2showsthesortoflittlegadgetwhichisfinefor thejob.Ifyoucannotmakethat,thentrytogeta cylinderofsteeloralloy,sayoneinchindiameterand exactlytherightlengthtoslipbetweenthepillow blocks.Puttherboltthroughthisandpullupthe bolttoabout10lb.fttorquebeforeliftingthecraftoff theground.

Nowwemustconsiderwhatconditionweare seekingforacorrecthang-checkresult.HereIfeelthe Bensenmanualgetsalittleconfusingforsomefolk andIprefertoconsidertheproblemasfollows:— Relatethehang-checkanglestothetorque-tube,not tothemast.Incaseyoudonotknow,thetorque-tube isthemember,usuallyabout1torlltfinchessquare and8to12incheslong("walltubeofsteelonCampbell-Bensen138sandsolidalloyonsomeAmerican heads,rotor-heads,thatis!),uponwhichismounted theboltforthemainbearing,atitsrearend,thecrossbarbywhichcontrolforceisapplied.Theinstructions intheBensenmanualtendtoconcentrateonrelating thehang-checkanglestothemastandthatseemsto worrypeople.

Thetorque-tubeisparalleltothekeelandtothe groundwhenatfull'down'andisthereforepositioned at0'"incidence".Atneutral,itis9'positive,relative tothekeelandisthereforeatright-anglestothemast, Fig.I.AsIsaidearlier,werequirethetorque-tubeto beheldatneutralduringthehang-check.Thus,our torque-tubeisinitially9'downattheREAR.I emphasisethisbecauseitisusuallywherethetrouble starts.SeeFig.3(a).

Assumingthatyouarehang-checkingaBensenB8, havethefueltankemptyor,atmost,half-full(youwill findthatitdoesnotmakemuchdifference).Attacha protractor,withacentralplumb-lineandbob,tothe sideofthetorque-tubeortoanextensionofit.The extension must beclampedexactlyparalleltothe torque-tube,ofcourse.Whenthemachineisonthe groundandthestickatneutral,theplumb-linewill showa9'reading.Fig.4.

Nowliftthemachineoffthegroundandclimbinto thescat.Donotforgetyourflyingclothing!Youwill findthenosehangsdownalarmingly.Theplumb-line ontheprotractorattachedtothetorque-tubeshould nowbeindicating2'downattheFRONT.Should youbothertocheckit,youwillfindthatthekeelisII' downatthefront,ifyourairframeisaccuratelybuilt.

Itisinorderforthetorque-tubetobedownatthe front,pilotinseat,by0'to5',with2'beingthe optimum.Withinthoselimits,thehandlingcharacteristicswillvaryslightly.Outsidethem,youaregoingto havetobeasmartpilotor,failingthat,astatistic! Pleaseaimforthe20reading.

OnastandardBensen,thehead-platesaredrawn foryou,allyouhavetodoismakethem,carryoutthe assemblyanddoahang-checktoprovethatalliswell. Withotherdesigns,notably'owndesigns',itis necessarytodecidewhetherthefueltankshouldbe fullorempty,etc.,andadjustablehead-plates--if appropriatetothedesign—madeforcarryingoutthe hang-check.Figure5showsthesortofplatesIusefor thispurpose.Theyaremadefrom16swgmildsteelor hardaluminium.Afterail,theyonlyhavetosurvive undersimplestaticloading.Boldtheheadunittoa

Incidentally,ifyouintendtofffanykindofpre-spin fortherotorwhichderivesitstorquefromtheengine, itiswisetoincreasethethicknessoftheheadplates. Onepieceof6swgorevenadoublelayerof10swg L70eachsideissuggested.WithaBensenpre-spin unit,whichisentirelycarriedontheheadunit,thisis notsoimportant,though,personally.Iwouldfollow thebeefing-upprocedure.Withthetwo-enginespin-up, suchanapproachisrecommendedbyBensenAircraft Corp.

Itisnotpossibleformetoadviseontherecommendedhang-checkanglestobeusedon'own design'gyros.Hopefully,anyonewhoisboldenough toembarkonthedesignofagyro.fromwhichhewill danglehisownneck,willalsohavethenecessary knowledgetotellhimhowtodecidehowitshouldbe balanced.

Ifyourmachineisfittedwithanacellearoundthe pilot,oranyotherappendageswhichcanaffectits flyingcharacteristics,itmaybequitewrongtoassume thata2'hang-checkisappropriate.Allyoucandois togetthegeometrytothatstate,byproceedingas above,thengooutanddosomeextensiveglidetestingonatow-ropebehindacar.Trymovingthe CGbackandforth,withheavierandlighterpilotsor withsubstantialbalanceweightsBOLTEDtothekeel andalsotryflyinginthoseconditionswiththefuel tanksfullandempty.Yourexperiemntsshouldcover therangeofhang-checkconditions(relatedtothe torque-tubeheldatneutral,asexplainedearlier)from. say,6'downto1'up.Proceedwithgreatcaution and,evenwhenyouaresureyouhavethebestbalance set-upandarekeentogoontofree-flighttests,be extracareful;thetow-ropehasbeenastabilisingaid duringtowedtests.

Foranyonewhoisinterested,thebesthang-check conditionfortheCampbell'Cricket'was1-to2 downatthefrontofthetorque-tubewiththefueltank halffull.

THENIGHTVISITOR MIKESTAPP

Itwas thcSummerof1953andIhadbeenenjoyinga holiday,campingnearthegrassaerodromeandflying mostdays,hopingtoqualifyformylicencequitesoon. Themorningwasbrightandclear,thepromiseof anotherhourtowardsmytotal,asIenteredtheopen hangartogetoutthefirstaeroplane.

TheMagistersatthere,well-wornanditspaint barelycoveredtheformerRAFroundels,which indicatedalonghistoryofflyinginstruction.Nevertheless,ithadtaughtmemostofwhatIknewabout flyingandIfeltIwasjustbeginningtomasterit.

Iheavedthewoodenbulkoutontothegrassand beganacheck,whichIwasnowtrustedtodobefore atrainingflight.Thefuelgaugecaughtmyeye, readingverylow,anditoccurredtomethatIhad refuelleditquitelatethedaybeforeandIhadn't noticedanyoneelseflyafterthat.

Gaugessometimeslie,butIopenedthefillercap and,sureenough,therewasverylittlefuel.Suspicions cametomindasIwentintotheClubhouseandcalled outtheCFI,averyexperiencedandscepticalmanof fewwords.Ofcourse,ithadhappenedbefore,open hangarsinvitedfueltheftsandonceagainthepolice came,tookthefactsdownandleft,implyingthatwe couldexpectlittleelseifthetemptationwasthere. Theywouldpatrolpasttheairfieldduringthenight, butthatwasalltheycouldoffer.

Duringtheday,asIflewandgrappledwithcross-

fewcircles,sniffing,thensettleddownalongoneside ofthetentanddriftedintodreamsofwhatever nterestsAlsations.

Somehow,Iwasonafarm,thetractorwasploughingafield,quitenoisily,Ithought.Hermannwasthere, growlingatit,thenbarking.Thetractorwasjusttaking onaratheroddshape,whenIwassuddenlyinthe tent,wideawakeandcold,inthebrightmoonlight. Hermannwasstillgrowlingandthetractorwasstill running Iflungthetentflapupandthere,infrontofthe hangarwasaMagister,enginerunningandjustabout totaxi.AsIstoodup,itwasmoving,inthefamiliar zig-zagpatternofthepilotwhoneverseesquitewhere heisgoing.Whoeverwasinitmusthavebeenmad takingitlikethat,andIsupposeitwaspossiblethat someonemightwishtoflyitonaclearmoonlitnight. Theydidduringthewar.I'dheard.Iwasrunningafter it,nopointinshoutingabovethenoise,butperhapsI couldstopit

IwassomehowawarethatHermannwasnot followingme...andthentheshockhitmeaswitha sledgehammer.Theaeroplanewasturning,alittle wayahead,andthemoonlightcaughtitswings.The roundelsstoodoutclearlyandthemoonlightreflected notjustyellowlight,butrealyellowpaint.

Therestcouldeasilybecamouflage.Istoppedasthe slipstreamblewalittlegaleatmeandtheMaggielined

countries,themysteriesofdriftandthedreadedunscheduleddiversion,muchdiscussiontookplaceand byeveningmostofthemembersfavouredsomekind ofguardsystemdesignedtocatchtheoffender.Not surprisingly,itwasnoticedthatIhadbeencamping duringthatweekclosebyanditwassuggestedthatI shouldmovemytentjustalittlenearertokeepalisteningwatch.

Itseemedagoodideaatthetimeand,inanycase. Ihardlyexpectedanyonewasfoolishenoughtocome asecondnight,thusIpreparedtobeddowninaquiet cornerofthefieldalittlewayfromthe'blister' hangar.Thesunsetwiththatgloriousgoldenfirejust aboutwhenthebarclosedandallwasstill.Don'task mewhereanAlsationgotanamelikeHermann,but the namestartedasajokeanditjuststuck.Thusthe doggyformofthatdescriptionpaddedaroundina

up,pausingforjustasecondasthepilotlookedinmy direction,dressedimmaculately,itseemed,inthe leatherhelmetandMk.8goggles,thenitwasonthe moveagain,rudderflappingfordirectionalcontrol, theenginenoteloudandthetailnowintheair.

Abouthalf-wayacrossthegrass,itrosegracefully andflewintothedistance,theenginenotefading steadilylongafterIhadlostsightofit.

Draggedoutofbedhalf-waythroughthenightto answerthetelephone,theCFIthoughtImusthave gonecompletelyroundthebendandhe'dneverheard anythinglikeitin'X'yearsflying

Nevertheless,whenheactuallyarrivedtofindno aeroplane,itseemedappropriatetophonethepolice too.Theycame,lookedandwent.Itwasonlyreally inthemorningthatanythingcametolight.

COLLECTINGVINTAGEAIRCRAFT

InJune1967Iacquiredmyfirstvintageaircraft.I hadbeengiventheaddressofMrR.C.Strealterof SuttonColdfieldwholwastoldbuiltaPou-du-Ciel inthe1930'sandhadsomepartsoftheaircraftstored. IfoundthewingsofHM-14G-AEOHintheraftersof ashedathisfirmandathishouseIfoundvirtuallyall therestoftheaircraftexceptthefuselagewhichhad beenusedasamotorcyclesidecarinthelate1930's. ThisPouwasstartedin1935andflewlocallyin1936/7 beforebeingdismantledwhenthesocalled"Poubancameintoeffect.AfewdaysafterIhadseentherentainstheyweretransportedtomythenhomeat SolihullandIwasfacedwiththeusualproblemfor restorersandhomebuilders—lackofworkshopspace. Planswereputinhandtoextendthegaragebutitwas notuntilearlySeptemberthattheworkwascompleted.InthemeantimeIhadreadina1954Air Britainmagazinementionofth.efactthatthewingsof PouG-AEGVwereinexistanceinNorthampton.Ihad searchedfortheseunsuccessfullyin1954butwasmore fortunateinJuly1967andfoundtheaddress.1was amazedtofindthewingsingoodconditionstillstored intheraftersofagarage.Thesewerepurchasedand joinedthoseofEOHundertarpaulinsinthegarden toawaitthecompletionoftheworkshop.G-AEGV hadbeenbuiltbytheEastMidlandsAviationCompanyatSywell.Thefuselageoftheaircrafthadbeen donatedtoanATCunitin1940anddidnotsurvive thewar.TheDouglasenginefromthisPoufoundits wayintotheClubDroneG-AEJFI.

InSeptember1967Iwentonatouringholidayin NorthernEnglandandScotlandwhichresulted eventuallyintheacquisitionoftheremainsoftwo moreaircraft.IntheraftersoftheclubhouseatDumfriesGlidingClubIfoundthewingsandtailofyet anotherPouwhichhadbeenbuiltnearKirbudbrigh in1937buthadneverbeencompleted.Thisaircraft waslaterallocatedthemarkingsBAPC27bythe BritishAircraftPreservationCouncil.Ialsosawthe DroneG-AEDBinstorageatAspatrianearWorkington.Eventuallynegotiationstopurchasetheseaircraftwerecompletedandthepartsweretransported toSolihullinMarch1968.Iusedaboattrailerto collectthepartsandthistooktwojourneys.

G-AEDB(C/N13)wascompletedasastandard DouglaspoweredDroneinMarch1936andaftera fewhoursinstructionatHanworthitsowner,MrG. ScottPearce,flewittoitsbaseatSconeaerodrome. Perth.TheaircraftbecamewellknowninScotlandin thesummerof'36whenitmadeseveralflightsto airfieldsalloverthecountry.InOctober1936itwas soldtoHumphreyDimock(stillactiveasC.F.I.for theglidingclubsatLee-on-Solent)operatingasthe ElyAeroClubandlaterasCambridgeshireFlying Serviceswhenasecondfieldwasbroughtintouseat CaxtonGibbet.TheaircrafthadbeenslightlydamagedatPerthwhenitranintoafencebutIbelieveit hadbeenrepairedbythetimeitwasdeliveredtoEly TheaircraftwasusedbytheClubfortrainingalong withG-ADSA,G-ADUAandG-AEEP.Theclubhad notwoseataircraftonitsstrengthatthistimeand onlythefourDrones.Themethodoftrainingwasas follows:Alargebagofsandwasplacedinthenoseof theDroneandathrottlestopwasfittedforthepupil tomakehisinitialtaxying.Asheprogressedtheload inthenosewaslightenedandthethrottlestopadjusted togivemorepowerAfterseveralhopsthepupilwas sentonhisfirstsolowhenhelearnthowtotrimthe aircraftintheair.Manypupilsweretrainedinthisway andtheonlymajoraccidentsufferedwasthefatal crashofG-ADIJAatCaxtoninDecember1936.Mr DimockalsohadG-AEJRandG-AEKOinhis possessionforshortperiods,thelatterbeingflown fromSidmouthtoElyinsixhoursinSeptember1938 landingenroutebesideafillingstationtorefuel.In 1937MrDimockdecidedtoconvertG-AEDBtoa tricycleundercarriagelayoutandtoinstallaBristol CherubEliengine.Inthisconfigurationtheaircraft firstflewonJuly18th,1938andcompletedseveral hoursflyinginthenextfewmonths.Inlate1938 CambridgeshireFlyingServicesceasedoperations andG-AEDBandG-AEJR(nowstoredbyGerry EastellatThetford)passed into theownershipofDan BurgoyneofKnowle.Solihull.ThelatterhadpreviouslybuilttwoPouxandalowwingsingleseater originallycalledtheDarleyMonoplane.Afterthe waritwasrenamedtheBurgoyne-StirlingDicerafter modificationsbyaHt.Lt.Stirling.Allthesethree

aircraftboretheregistrationG-AECN.DonBurgoynewhohadin1938rebuiltDronesG-AEJRand G-AEJSafterminorcrashesdecidedtoreconvert G-AEDBtoatailwheelundercarriageandkeepa Cherubengine.Herebuiltthefuselageusingpartsof G-AEENwhichhadcrashedatRamsgatein1936and usedtheenginemountsandCherubIIIoutofthe DartPupG-AELRwhichhadcrashedatTachbrook Aerodrome.LeamingtoninAugust1938.Theaircraft wascompletedinlate1939andstoredthroughoutthe war.ThemachinefirstflewatHockleyHeathon March3Ist,1946andinthenexttwomonthsmade twelveflightstotallingnearlyfourhoursincludinga cross-countrytoBruntingthorpeonApril14th.Whilst theaircraftwasstored.A.C.WaterhouseofLeicester boughttheremainsofG-ADPJfromDonBurgoyne andrebuiltthisaircrafttoalmostsimilarconfiguration

toG-AEDB.G-AEDBwassoldtoPercyNadinof StokeonTrentforashorttimeandwaseventually resoldtoDonBurgoyne.In1955itwaspurchasedby RonaldGrahamofWorkingtonwhotowedtheaircraftbehindhiscarfortheovertwohundredmile journey.Heplannedtorestoretheaircrafttoflying conditionbuthisplanswerethwartedwhenthewings weredestroyedintheearly1960's.Theaircrafthad beenloanedtoaclubforanexhibitionintheMarket Hall.Carlisle,andaftertheexhibitionthedismantled machinewastakentoalocalfarmfortemporary storagebeforeitwasduetobereturnedtoMr. Graham.Howeveritwasbadlystoredandthewings weretrampledonbycowsandeventuallyMr.Graham wasabletogetbackthefuselage,engine,wingstruts andtailsurfaces.

Withthesenewarrivalsmygaragewasfullandso thePouxwingsfromG-AEGVandBAPC27were takentotheMidlandAircraftPreservationSociety storeatStratford.Ihadnoexperienceinaircraft rebuildingsoIdecidedinJanuary1968tobuilda newfuselageforPouG-AEOHbefoieattemptingany workontheDronewhichwaseventuallygoingtobe rebuilttoflyingcondition.

Thisnewfuselagewascompletedinabouttwo monthsinasparebedroomAlsoatthistimeM.A.P.S. werebuildinganewfuselageforG-AEGVandthis completedPouhasnowbeenseenatmanyairdisplays inthelastfewyears.Atthistimemyactisitieswiththe BritishAircraftPreservationCouncilandM.A.P.S. weretakingupmostofmvsparetimeandbetween thenandJuly19701onlymanagedtorebuildthetail surfacesoftheDrone,makeanewcentresection pylonastheoldonehadwoodworm,andreskinthe undersideofthefuselage.Theaircrafthadobviously beenstoredforsometimeindampconditionsand

everyjointwascheckedandmostwerescrapeddown andregluedusingAerolite.

Ihadbeensearchingforsometimeforavintage twoseataircrafttorebuildandafterseveraldisappointmentsacquiredtheMothMinorG-AFOB fromJamesHayStevensin1969.Withthislatest acquisitiontobestoreditwasobviousthatsomeof mycollectionwouldhavetobesoldsoPouG-AEON wassoldtoGordonRileyandBAPC27toMick Abbey,bothM.A.P.S,membersfromCoventry.

MothMinorG-AFOB(C/N94018)hadbeen deliveredtotheNorfolkandNorwichAeroClubin July1939andwasimpressedasX5I17intheNovemberofthatyeargoingfirstto5MAJ.atKemble.On Novemver10thitwasallocatedto613Squadronat OdihamandwentwiththissquadrontoNetherlhorpe inJune1940andtoFirbeckinSeptemberofthesame year.AyearlatertheaircraftwasreturnedtoDe Havillandsforoverhaulandafterthiswasinstore fromDecember1941toNovember1942at46M.U.,

Lossiemouth.TheaircraftwasthenreleasedtoSt. Andrew'sU.A.S.atLettcharsanditsfinalserviceuser was10(0)A.F.U.atDumfriesfromJanuaryto December1943.Themachinereturnedto5M.U.at KembleforstoragebeforebeingsoldtoGroup CaptainW.A.RollasoninDecember1945.G-AFOB wasrestoredtotheregisterinNovember1946toW.R. Scott.designerorScottgliderspre-warandwasconvertedatWhiteWalthambyAmalgamatedAir Services,firstflyingonMarch16th.1947.During restorationtheaircraftacquiredaGipsyMinor enginefromMothMinorC/W94065towhich G-AFPAwasallocatedin1939.Howeverthisaircraft wasoneoftheunfinishedairframestransportedto BanastownN.S.W.andcompletedasA.2I-8forthe R.A.A.F.TheenginewasoverhauledbyD.H.(Australia)andshippedtoEnglandinlate1946.

J.R.McConnellpurchasedG-AFOBinAUL,.Usl 1949andkeptthemachineatNewrounardsbefore sellingitinFebruary1952toGeorgeMeekofDumbartonwhokepttheaircraftatPerth.Itreplaced G-AFRYasGeorgeMeeksaircraftwhichwasin turnareplacementforG-AUNTIwhichcrashedin Skyein1948.JamesHayStevens,thewellknown aviationjournalistpurchasedFOBinFebruary1959 keepingthemachinefirstatElstreeandlatereitherat RamsgateonhisprivatestripatCharing.Afterapost wartotalofover500hourstheaircraftfaileditsCof Ain1961andwasstoredatCharingandlaterat MeadumIremovedthetailsurfacesandtheengine fromthefuselageinJanuary1970andsoonafterthey weretransportedtoSolihullinafurniturevan.Afinal arrivalatSolihullwasasetofDronewingsfrom G-AEJ14(exE.M.A.C.)whichweretransportedfrom ThetfordintheSpringof1970ontheroofofmycar. AlsoonthisjourneytheCherubIIIwasleftatOld Wardenforrebuilding.

InJuly1970ImovedtomypresentBerkshire addressandtheDroneandMothMinorwerestored inmygarageuntilaworkshopcouldbeconstructed. Planningpermissionwaseventuallyobtainedandin November1970Ipurchaseda40'xl2chickenhouse whichaftermajormodificationwascompletedin October1971.Howeverworkwasstartedonthe DroneinDecember1970when1movedthewings intothesunroomattherearofthehouse.Inthree

monthsIcheckedallgluedjoints,repairedse‘eral brokenribsandcompletelyrenewedbothleading edges.Whenthisworkwascompletedthefuselagewas broughtin.ataskwhichinvolvedremovingtwodoors, and1decidedtoreskintherearfuselagesinceithad beenpatchedmanytimesandwasnotatallsmooth. Thenewcentresectionpillarsmadehylaminatingfive sheetsof3mmplywasalsofittedandthefirstmating of wingstofuselageLookplaceinJune1971.This showedthatafewadjustmentswouldhavetobemade inordertogetthecorrectgeometryTherestofthe summerwasspentfinishingtheworkshopandrebuildingwasrestartedinOctoberwiththereskinning ofthefrontfuselageandthecentresection.

Adiversionfromrebuildingwasthecollectionof theremainsofMothMinorG-AFRYfromDumbartoninlateOctober.Thesehadheenboughtfrom GeorgeMeekbyJamesHayStevensin1959huthe hadnevercollectedthem.TheaircrafthadbeenwithdrawnfromuseatPerthin1951.thefuselagegivento theDumbartonA.T.C.wholaterburntit.andthe engine,wingsandtailsurfacesstoredintheraftersof GeorgeMeek'sfactory.Thisroundjourneywas completedintwodaysusingaglidertrailerandincludedadetourtoPrestwicktoseeBobRussell's Kleem25.G-AAUP

Furtheradditionstothecollectioninearly1972 wereaspareCherubengineobtainedafterseeingan advertisementinExchangeandMartandthendashing toClUppenhamtoconcludethedeal.Alsoobtained wasvirtuallyanotherenginelessoutercasingsoI shouldhaveenoughsparesforyearstocome.This enginehadoncebeenfittedintheHeathParasol G-AFZE.EnMarchIcollectedfromWhitchurch. Hants.someMothMinorfoldingflapsandtail surfaceswhichturnedouttobefromG-AFPTwhich crashedontakeoffatWhiteWalthamonSeptember 17th.1947.Thecauseofthisaccidentwaslaterfound tobeduetothefactthatthcairventofthefueltank hadbeenmaskedoverduringaresprayandthetape hadbeenleftonwiththeresultingfuelstarvationon takeoff.Thefinalarrivalin1972wastheMothMinor CoupeG-AFNIpurchasedbyBarryWelford.Itwas collectedfromRochesterinAprilusingaboattrailer andplacedinstorageundertarpaulinsalongsidethe workshop.

Withapracticedeye,theGolfClubSecretary addressedtheball.Thismediumironshotwouldsee hirnonthegreenintwo,hemused,ashecarefully aimedatthepinwhichwasjustvisiblefromhis positiononthcfairway.Quitesuddenlyasilverbiplaneswoopedbetweenthetreesguardingthegreen andliftedthepinneatlyoutofthecupwithitsundercarriage.Aburstofpowerandtheaeroplaneclimbed audaciouslyovertheastoundedgolfers'heads,disappearingintothehazydistancebehindtheclubhouse. CaptainLoftus,theterrorofTingewickHallandhis D.H.60GipsyMothhadstruckagain

ForfouryearsthiscolourfulcharacterflewGABAGfromahundredacrefieldonhispropertyat TingewickintheCountyofBuckinghamshire.His foibleswerewellknownandhissenseofhumour endearedhimtoall.Hewasnotthefirstownerofthe GipsyMothwhichhadstartedlifeatStagLanein 1930tobebrieflyownedbytheBentleyMotorCar Company,followedbyashortspellwithafilm company.However,itscareerinthemotionpicture industrycouldnothavebeenasexcitingasitslifeat Tingewickanditwaswithgreatreluctancethat CaptainLoftushadtoputthemachineintostoreat theoutbreakofwarin1939.Itremainedinstoreuntil 1945whenitwaspurchasedbytwoRoyalAirForce officers.DouglasandPeterHull.whoflewG-ABAG

fromR.A.F.Finmereforsonietwelvemonths.Service commitmentsdictateditssaleand'TheBagiasithad becomeaffectionatelyknown,movednoithofthe borderwithitsnewowneratPerth.Afewyearslater thestorynearlycametoanendwhenaheavylanding brokecillitheundercarriageanddamagedthefuselage beyondhopesofaneconomicalrepair.Onceagainthe oldladywentintoalongperiodofstorage.Newsof hermisfortunefilteredSouthandreachedtheHull brothers,nowsuccessfulbusinessmen.Theywere determinedtoseetheiroldGipsyMothflyingagain soin1968,equippedwithtrailerandchequebook, theysetoffforScotlandtorescueG-ABAGfromher prematureretirement.Muchtoobusytocarryoutthe extensiverepairsthemselves,theytraileredthecomponentstoBlackbusheAirportinHampshirewhere MauriceRobinsonofRobinsonAircraftLtd.undertooktocarryoutthework.

Apartfromthedamagecausedbytheaccidentthe machinehaddonealotofflyingsinceitsconstruction in1930andmanyofitspartswerewellworn.Maurice Robinson'sbriefwastorebuildthemachinetoits'as
