Itispopularlybelievedthatengineersknowall aboutengines.Infactformostengineersnothingcould befurtherfromthetruth.Formostofmyworkinglife Ihavebeeninvolvedinthedesignandconstructionof large,immobileobjectssuchasbridges,buildingsand quaywalls,andthelocationanddesignofrailway tracks,generallyintheremoterpartsoftheworld.
InmyapprenticedaysIspentsometimeinships' engineroomsandfellinlovewiththosegreatsteamdrivenmonsters,whoseconnectingrodsmarchedin tnnewiththewillowydanceofthevalverodsswaying onthecams.ThoseIcouldunderstand.Youcouldsee andfeelthepowerasthehugecrankstrampedround atahundredandtwentyrevolutionsaminuteand manoeuveringcalledforateamofmen.onetoeach throttlevalve,onetoeachreversingleverandone, generallyme.ontheengineroomtelegraphkeeping themovementslog
SomehowIhavenevermanagedtocometoterms withtheinternalcombustionenginewithitsunimaginablyhighrateofrevolutionanditsbusylittle partsbeaveringawayattinyclearances,allhidden awayinablackironbox.Itiswonderful,ofcourse, almostmagicalandatriumphtoman'singenuity,but itlacksthesympathyofsteam.ShadesofHiram Maximandhissteam-drivenaeroplane.

FromthenonIfedhimpartsofthePeacockVW conversionastheycametohanduntiloneevening,at aPF.A.strutmeetingAlanaskedhow007was comingaloneandIsaidIwasnearlyreadyforthe engine.
Alanlookedthoughtfulandthensaidthatbecause ofpressureofworkandP.F.A.activitieshehadnot gotveryfarwithmyenginebutwouldIliketoborrow his,whichhewouldnotneedforatleastayear,justto getflying.
Ifairlyjumpedattinsverygenerousofferandafew nightslaterIcollectedtheengine,boreithomeand parkeditontheendofmywife'sgardenbenchclose upto007'sfirewall.
Thenextweek-endIborrowedahandy-billytackle withabrakeonthetopblockfromasailingfriend, slungtheengineandcarefullyincheditintoposition.
Onethingthathadcausedmealotofanxietywas whetherornotthepre-drilledholesinthefirewall wouldlineupwiththeboltholesintheengine.They fittedperfectly,butthetopboltswerehalfaninchtoo short!Ihaddeductedhalfaninchfromthedimensions givenonthePeacockdrawingsbecausetheywerefor aII"thickfirewallwhereasminewasonlyI"thick. However,Ifoundtherewasathickeningoftheflange onmy1600ccenginethatdidnotappearonthe drawingsofthe1200ccengineoftheoriginalconversion.SoIneededthelongerboltsafterall,though thebottomoneswereaperfectfit.
Waitingforthenewtopboltstocomedelayed installationforaweekandAlantalkedmeintotaking adayofftogoflyingwithhim.Itwasadelightfulbreak fromthesteadyslogofworkon007.
WewentfirsttoGoodwood,whereIgotinanhour's flyingwithex-nightfighterDougAdamsofVectair,
tomakemylicencelegalagain.OntoShoreham,where wefoundeverythingclosedbecauseitwastheEaster publicholiday.However,welunchedwellthereand afterwardswentandlookedatGerryPrice'sV.P.I, Esmeralda,inthehangar,fromwhichI.atleast,learnt anawfullot.ThenbacktoGoodwoodforanotherhalf hourofsoloeachandfinally,homerefreshedinthe cooloftheevening.Alovelydaytoremember.
ThenewtopboltsarrivedandwerefittedsothatI couldreleasetheblockandtackleandgetonwiththe hook-upofcontrols.
Formostofayear,eversinceJohnDerrickhad givenmethethrottleunit.Ihadbeenlookingfor someonetomakeupthepush-pullcontrolsthatI wouldneed,hutwithoutmuchsuccess.
Ihadmanagedtogetapianowirechokecontrolfor acar,thathappenedtobeexactlytherightlength,but thethrottleandhot-aircontrolswouldhavetobe speciallymadetofit,andinanycasethethrottlewould needamuchheaviergaugeofyvire.
Nowthattheneedwasurgent.Istartedasystematic searchandeventually,quitebychance.Iunearthedthe onlyremotecontrolspecialistinthecountylessthana milefrommyoffice.
Innotimeatallhehadmadeupmythrottleand hot-aircontrolsandalsothecoppertubewithnutsand olivesthatconnectsmyoilpressuregaugetothe engine.
IhadpreviouslyfittedanylontubewithcornpressionendfittingstotheoilpressuregaugebutMike rejecteditonthegroundsthatanenginefircwould meltthetubeandwouldthereafterfeedthefirewith hotoilNotaprettythought.
Thethrottlehadpresentedmewithaproblem.The actuatingmechanismontheV.W.carburettorconsistedofasmallquadrantofaboutoneinchradius, withalittlearmandballtotakethesocketendofa rod.Imeasuredthechordofthemovementofthe littlearmasEil"andcalculatedthelengthofleverrequiredtogivealittlelessthanthefulltravelofthe throttlecontrolinthecockpit.Theproblemwashow toarrangeabell-cranksystemtooperateonthelittle armanditsballjoint.
ForawholefortnightIworriedoveiituntilone evening,whenIwasgazingatitdespondently.I suddenlybegantowonderwhatwasontheotherend ofthelittleshaftonwinchthequadrantworked.I lookedandfoundanutanda10s.w.g.spacer.When theywereremovedtherewasasquaredendallready toreceivealever.Aquarterofanhourlaterthejob wasdone.
Mikewasnotveryhappyaboutthelackofsupport forthecarburettorwhichwasonlyheldonbytwo
boltsthroughaflangeweldedtotheinletmanifold whichinturnwasFreetorotateintherubberconnectionsateachend.
Theproblemarosefromthelackofasuitable supportpointonthecrank-case.Igotoveritby makinga10s.w.g.stoolofZsectiononeendofwhich wasboltedtooneoftheoilfillerstudsandtheother legsupportedthehotboxtothebottomofwhichit wassecuredwithaT*"bolt.
Theifrboltwouldnotbeaccessibleoncethewhole lotwasassembledsothestoolhadfirsttobeboltedOn tothehot-box,thehot-boxfittedtothecarburettor thenthewholelotrotateddownuntiltheotherlegof thestoolwashalfwaydownontheoilfillerstud.At thispointonecouldinstallthefuelpumpandboltit downbeforethecarburettorplushot-boxandstool couldberotatedtoitsfinalpositionandthelastnut ontheoilfillerslippedonandtightenedup.
Lateron,urgedbyAlanandRichardRamon,I fittedanothersupportattheotherendofthecarburettor—justtomakequitesure.
Evansrecommendstheuseofamarine-type electronictachometer.Thisisclearlybecauseofthe impossibilityofgettingareasonablystraightrunfrom enginetoinstrument.
Thereare,Idiscovered,twotypesofelectronic tachometer.Oneworksbyinducedcurrentinthin wireswrappedroundtheplugleads.Atfirstsightthis seemstheeasiersolutionbut,withdualignition,one mustatsomepointbringtogetherthetwoleadsfiring theplugsonthesamecylinderinordertowrapthe thinwireroundbothleads.Thiswouldcallforan awfullengthofH.T.leadssincetheonesforthetop plugsarenaturallyrunoverthetopoftheengineand theothersfeedinfromthebottom.Isupposeitcould bedonebutIoptedfortheothertypewhichworksoff theearthswitchsideofthemags.
Thisrequiresachange-o‘erswitchandquiteatangle ofwiringbutitisallintheshortspacebetweenthe instrumentandthemag.switches.Imadeiteasyfor myselfbydrawingasimplewiringdiagramandcolour codingthewiring,seeFig.Ibelow.
outfromthegarage.Withherwingshungontheside shelookedlikeabutterflyemergingfromthechrysalis. Wecarefullybridgedtheflowerborderandrolledher ontothefrontlawnwhereshesatsurroundedbyrose beds.
Thewingscameoffandwerelaidontrestlessothat thestrutscouldbefitted.Thenonewingatatimewas offeredupandboltedinplace.Aonemanandtwo womenjob.
Theaileroncableswereconnectedtothestickand thebalancecablecoupledup,andfinallythestabilator wasfittedinplaceanditscablescoupledtothehorn.
Itonlyremainedtofitthepropthathadhungforso longonthegaragewallandwehadaveritableaeroplane.
ImpatientasIwasthepaceofworkwasnecessarily slowaspassers-bykeptcomingintoaskquestionsand beshownround,andeverychildintheneighbourhood hadtobeliftedinandoutofthecockpit.
WeighingtheaircraftforCentreofGravitydeterminationpresenteditscropofproblems.
Ihadlongsuspectedthatmybathroomscaleswere badlyinerrorandsoItriedtoborrowsonicmore accurateones.Theresultofmyresearcheswasto establishthefactthatallbathroomscalesarecongenitalliars,soIsetouttocalibratemyown.
WiththreehalfhundredweightweightsIfoundthat ithadastraightlineerror,asonewouldexpectsince itisspringcontrolled,theproportionateerrorbeing constantthroughouttherange.Mywifewasdelighted todiscoverthatsheweighseightpoundslessthanthe scalesindicateandabandonedherdietforthwith!
Iblocked007uplevel,intheflyingattitudeand introducedthescalesundereachwheelinturn.Precise readingofthescaleswasmadedifficultbythefact thattheslightestbreezesetthepointerswinging.
The"grosslessfuel–weighingforthemaximumaft positionoftheCofG.withmyselfinthecockpit.was beyondthecapacityofthescales,soitwasnecessary toconstructabridgeconsistingofaplanksupported onblocksatoneendandthescaleplatformatthe other,withthewheelcentralinthemiddleofthespan. Thereadingwasthendoubledtogivetheweighton onewheel.Theaccuracyofthisreadingwaseasily checkedknowingmyownweightandtheincrementon thetailwheel.
Theresultswereverysatisfactory.Althoughthe totalweightexceededthat or theprototype,nearlyall theexcesswasaccountedforbymodificationsinterposedbythedesignerandbyU.K.regulations,suchas thetorsionboxesonthewings,thejurystruts,dual ignition,steerabletailwheel,etc.
ThepositionsoftheC or Gaccordedveryclosely withtheprototypeandwerecomfortablyforwardof themaximumpermissibleaftposition.Theworksheet lookedasshowninDiag.II.
IthinkitwasatthelaststrutmeetingbeforeSywell thatRichardRamoncameuptomeinsomeagitation. HadIrememberedtoregaptheplugsto15/1000"he asked."No–,Ireplied,?Did1haveto?",showingmy ignorance."Youcertainlydo,formags",saidRichie. SoIdid.

IspentthenextSaturdaymorningpackingpaper roundtheengineandtryingtoworkoutawayof castingamouldwithoutmakingafilthymessofAlan's lovelymotor.untilIsuddenlythoughtoftheperfect solution.
GerryPricehadsomerathernicecowlingsonwhat appearedtobeanidenticalinstallation,soIranghim upandaskedifIcouldborrowhismoulds.Gerrysaid - Certainlynot-.Hewouldcastthecowlingshimself andgivethemtomeatSywell.

Mikehadtoldinetoarrangeagravityfeedtothc carburettorandleadapipefromthefuelpumpintoa bucket,thenatthecricicalmoment,withtheengineat fullbore,totransferthepipeintoameasuringvessel foroneminuteandafterwardsreadthequantity obtained.
NIyVolkswagenhandbookgavethemaximum pumpdeliveryas400c.c.s.aminutesoitseemedto methatalitremeasurewouldbeadequate.Iaskedmy wifeifshehadoneand,proudofthefactthatshewas asmetricatedasanyoneelse,sheproducedatransparentplasticjugwithgraduationsuptoIlitre.
Alanlentmeagallontinwithatapsolderedinto thebottomandalengthofplasticpipe.Iputhalfa gallonofpetrolhiit,satitontopof007'stankand lasheditinplace.

TheCommitteeMembershavebeenfair,theyhave travelledasfarafield,inthepasttwoyears,asfrom SouthamptontoLancashire,atnotinconsiderable peisonalexpenseandinconvenience,inanattemptto meetourMembersonaregionalbasisandtohear
Asdaylightpeepedbetweenitswheelsandthegrass runwayatBooker,SpartanArrowG-ABWPwas makingatake-offthatwouldendeightgruellingyears ofhardwork,byahandfulofloyalenthusiasts.Eight yearsofarduousdutiesthattheM.P.M.group,ledby RoyMills,hadnotdreamedofwhen,in1968.they undertooktheoverhaulofthisuniquebiplaneforits owner.RaymondBlain.Lookingmuchbiggerthan its30ft.7ins.wingspan,theCirrusHermespowered machinewasdismantledandremovedbyroadtothe group'swellknown'tunnel'workshopinwestLondon, wherethefirstdetailedsurveyofairframecondition wascarriedout.Thisinspectionrevealedtheneedfor anextensiverebuildorboththefuselageandthewings. Ruefullythegrouprealisedthattheyhadtakenona majortaskandthatthesooneritwastackledthe better.
Thefuselagerequiredtwonewbottomlonaerons, newfloor,newenginebearersandinstrumentpanels Thusthewholeframevirtuallyhadtobeconstructed againfromscratch.Similarlywiththewings,thespars ofwhichinparthadtobereplacedwhileothersneeded majorrepairArecordofthehoursofworkwaskept tostartwith.butwhenthetotalreached3.500hours thetallywasabandoned,astheworkwasnotyet halfwaycompleted.Oftheoriginalteamthatstarted theproject,threeemigrated.twomovedtojobsaway
fromtheareaandseveralmorejustgaveuphopeand driftedaway.Despitethesetbacks,Royandfourother stalwartspressedonwiththework,withagrowing awarenessthatitwouldhavebeenaneasiertaskto buildacompletelynewSpartanArrow.Nevertheless by1972progresswasapparentwhenthefuselageand wingswerecompletedandmorehelperswererecruitedasmajorrepairstotheempennagewereputin handandanewlowercentresectionconstructed.
MeanwhiletheCirrusHermesenginewascausing moreproblemsthanwasoriginallyanticipated.The 105h.p.fourcylinderair-cooleduprightrequireda topoverhaul,butthiswascomplicatedbytheconditionofthecylinderheadsandvalveguideswhich wereallslightlydistorted.GeorgeBlainundertook thisworkandhadtojigborenewguidestocompensateforthedistortion.Newsmall-endbearingsand pistonringsalsohadtobemadebecausenospares wereavailable.Eventuallyalloftheairframecomponentswerereadyforcovering,havingbeenchecked byP.F.A.inspectorBrianDunlop.Asallhomebuilderswillappreciate,afabriccoveredlightaircraft comestolifeonlyaftertheairframehasbeencovered andthecoatsoftauteningdopehaveperformedtheir magic.Onlythenarethesubtlecontoursoftheaeroplanefinallyrevealed.ThecoveringoftheSpartan Arrowwasverymuchafamilyaffair,withRoy'swife Margaretmakingupthepre-sewnbagsforthewings, withtheassistanceofthechildren.WhenallthecomponentshadbeencompletedtheyweretakentoBooker intheAutumnof1975forfinalassembly.Withbrand newflyingwirestheArrowwasriggedinafavourable cornerofthehangarnearthedoor,giving.maximum daylightforthejob.Riggingabiplanethesizeolthe SpartanArrowisnosinecure,especiallywithno maintenancemanualasaguide.Thejobwastherefore tackledslowlyandmethodicallyduringthewinterand springmonthswhiletheengine,fuelsystemandnew cowlingsweremadereadyforgroundrunning.During thetestflyingthatfollowed,eachofthehelperswere rewardedwitha30min,flightwhiletheC of A scheduleofmanouevreswereflownbyRoyMills.He foundthatwiththeexceptionoftherateofclimb,all ofthebookfigureswereachievedandthatthecruising speedwasfiveknotshigherthanthatquotedinthe manufacturers'handbook.
WithveteranhelperKenGregoryinthepassenger seat,G-ABWPwasdeliveredbyRoytoownerRaymondBlainatLongMarstononthefirstdayof August1976,eightyearsandfourmonthsafterwork wascommenced.Eightveryhardyears.

TheAssociationhassomeforty-fiveClubsand Groupsaffiliatedtoit.Theiractivitiesvarygreatly— somearefully-fledgedcommercialflyingclubs,whilst othersmaybesmallgroupsbusilyrestoringanaeroplanetofutureairworthycondition.Orperhaps aeronauticalsocieties,withnoparticularaspirations towardsaircraftownership,butagenuineinterestin aircraftandaeronauticagenerally.Forconvenience, werefertothoseGroupsactuallyoperatingoneor moreaircraftfortheirmembersas'operational' Groups,whilstthelatterare'non-operational Groups.Original,isn'tit!Theyallhaveonethingin commonthough—bybeingaffiliatedtheyareall helpingtopromotetheaimsandobjectsofthe Associationandtherebylendingtheirsupportand numbers,tokeepthiswonderfulsportofoursalive andthriving.
ItfollowsthenthatnotallmembersofourGroups orClubsneedbeindividualmembersofthePFA, althoughthisisencouraged.Aminimumofthree individualsmaybeconsideredtoformaGroupand eachGroupreceivestwoadditionalcopiesofP.F.to circulateamongitsmembers.Thevaluetothemovementof Tour Groupbeingaffiliated,mayberealised whenitisconsideredthattheGroupsrepresenteda further1,700individuals,inadditiontotheordinary membership,whentheAssociationsuccessfully counteredproposalstomakethecarriageofradio mandatoryearlierintheyear.InreturntheAssociationisabletoofferadviceonallaspectsconcerning thesettingupoftheprospectiveGroup,itsoperation andlikelypitfalls.Anyoneconsideringembarking uponsuchaventureisencouragedtowritefordetails ofaffiliationandmakeuseoftheadviceandinformationoffered.
Whilepreparingthecaseinoppositiontothe MandatoryRadioProposals,werealisedthatmany Groupswerejustnamesonalistandwereallyknew verylittleaboutthem,howtheyoperatedandtheir activities.Infactwewerehardpressedtoquotemany reliablefactswhenitcametodealingwiththepowersthat-be.Soatthefirstopportunitywecanvassedthe Groupsforinformationaboutthemselves,inthehope thatwemayinthefuturebeabletospeakfroma positionofauthorityonsuchfundamentaltopicsas justhowmanyGroup-operatedaircraftareradio equipped,typicallevelsofinsurancecover,premiums andsoon.TheresponsefromtheGroupswastremendousandtoallthoseSecretarieswhotookthe troubletodigouttheinformation,goourthanks.A returnofabout90%wasreceived—thedefaulterson thisoccasionbeingmainlythosewhoforgottorenew theirsubsinJuly(haveyouchasedupyourSecretary yet?).

NearlyalltheGroupsotherthantheTraining Groupsmentionedearlier,classifytheirflying activitiesastouring/localpleasureflying,although manypracticeaerobatics,especiallythoseoperating thesingle-seaterNipper—quiteapopularmountthis. AlsooneGroupupsandtakesitselfawayforacommunalsummerholiday,whichisamarvellouswayof gettingachangeofscenery,andtwoGroupsarealso closelyassociatedwiththeworldofGliding.
IseethattheSheffieldAeroClub(notaP.F.A. Group,incidentally),atNetherthorpehavedecidedto waivelandingfeesforvisitorsfromotherClubsto encouragemorecross-countryflying.Thisseemstome asuperbincentivetowidenhorizons,insteadofaimlesslyflyingaroundthelocalareaanditisgoodtosec someonewiththeenterprisetoputtheideainto practice.Let'shopeotherairfieldoperatorswilltake uptheidea.
Asexpected,thesurveyshowedthatmostGroups aretrueco-ownershipsyndicates,witheachmember havinganequalshareintheaeroplane.However,all theTrainingGroupswithtwoexceptionsarecommercialFlyingClubsandarefinancedbyannual subscription.TwoGroupsrequiretheirmembersto becomenominalshareholders,whileoneGroup acceptsonlyinvitedmembers.
Themostpopularmethodoffinancingtheoperationofaircraftisbycharginganhourlyflyingrateto coverconsumables,likefuelandoilandanenginefund reserve,plusaregularsubscription.Thisisusually monthly,butoccasionallyquarterly,andinonecase half-yearly,tocoverthefixedcoststhataccrue whetherornottheaircraftleavestheground.This includeshangarage,insuranceandC.ofA.renewal. Legal
Three-quartersoftheGroupscanvassedrequired new memberstocompletesomekindofindemnity form,usuallysimilartotheSpecimenApplication FormofferedasaguidebytheAssociation.Those thatdidnot,wereagain,smallGroups whereindividualsownperhapsaquartershare.Itisperhaps reasonabletoconsideraclaiminthesecircumstances againstyourfriendsratherremote,butinthelightof theveryhighlevelofsettlementsawardedbythe Courtsthesedays,itisperhapssensibletobeawareof thepossibleconsequencesintheeventofadisaster. Thereisverylittlecaselawinvolvingthetestinginthe CourtsofIndemnityFormexclusionsandtheLaw Commissionersareexaminingthewholeaspectof limitingliabilityinthisway,inthelightofcurrent 'consumerprotection'thinkingandtheymaydeclare suchlimitationsvoid.Perhapsthelegaleaglesamongst youhavesomespecialistknowledgeinthefield.Ifso, wewouldverymuchliketohearfromyouonthe subject.
Approximately60%oftheGroupsalsoenforcethe 48hourRule'.Thisisaconditionofexemptionfrom theprovisionsoftheCarriagebyAirActs1961and 1962,whichrequireanyorganisation(notonlycommercialoutfits)tocarryacertainminimumamountof passengerseatinsurancecover.Byclaimingexemption fromtheAct,theGrouporClubmayoptforalower levelofcover(whichisthereforecheaper).Amongst thestringsattached,however,isarequirementthata potentialpassengermustbeamemberoftheClubat least48hoursbeforesettingfootinaClubaeroplane. Altogether57aircraftareoperatedbytheFlying andTrainingGroups.Asmightbeexpectedthe varioustypesofJodelarethemostpopularamongst thesmallerGroups,whileCessnasaretheusual equipmenttobeseenintheTrainingGroupFleets. OneGroupstillproudlyoffersP.P.L.trainingon TigerMothsandinfactislookingoutforAssistant Instructorscapableofdoingtheirstuffinrealaeroplanes.Ifyouareinterestedwecanputyouintouch. Thisisafascinatingbookwhichiswellworth reading.Itcontainsthelifestoryoftheauthorwho wasoneofthefirstpilotstobeemployedbyRollsRoyce,whentheyenteredtheaeroenginebusiness. AsIgotoutofinycaronthepieceofground allocatedtothePFAatBlackpoolAirport:sofor me startedtwodaysonourstand.Italsomarkedtheend ofsixweeksofrusInngabout,numerous'phonecalls andcommitteemeetings.allaimedattheNorth WesternStrutputtingonanexhibitionandshort flyingdisplayattheBlackpoolCentenaryAirPageant andInternationalAirRally or the4th.5thand6thof Junethis\iiear.
Despitetheshorttimebeforetoorganisethings,we werepleasedtohavetenPFApilotsandplanes attendingonSaturdayandsixteenonSunday.On bothdayswehadourflypastatthestartoftheflying displaysnothingspectacularliketheotherstaking partinthePageantbut.atleasttothePEAmembers there.quiteimpressi-ve.Sundaysawtwointeresting arrivals,firstlyDavidBuckle'sCavalierandthenthe Whiting'sTailwind.I,forone,wasyerypleasedthe)„ madeit.
Ourflyingspotwasforonlyaboutfifteenminutes eachday,butourexhibitionwasopenFromtentillsix.
Wckeptourlingerscrossed,forhaditrained,we wouldhavebeenforcedtotrytogetitallinthe marquee.Ourdisplayincludedanearlycompleted MonoandVP2whichstoodonthegrassalongside thelocallybuiltSprite(onlyshortofafewbitsand piecesanddueforanAutumnfirstflight)Otherthings

RollsRoycelentusanenginefordisplayand,one wayandanother,weintheNorththoughtwchadn't donetoobad.Whenwecountedupwhatwehadsold onthePEAshopcounter.weconsidereditquitegood. Allwasduetothehelpwereceivedfromthefolkat Shoreham.StrutmembershelpingoutattheAirfield andCommitteepeoplewhohadracedro Lin dNorth WalesandtheNorthWest,collectingpartsforthe exhibition—atrueteameffort.ILwasgreattohaive thePEAbusdrivenupfromtheSouthbyPatrick Copping(SouthernStrut),whichxsflitthemarquee andother'thingsonboard'wasmostusefultous Thanksallround.
WiththepeoplefloodingawayfromBlackpoolon theSundayaftertheAirDisplay,westartedpacking up,sayinggoodbyetofriendsnewandoldand thankingthosewhohadhelped.Webegantothink whatwehadlearnedand,ifthereisanotherPageant nextyear.whatwouldwedoandwhatimprovements wouldwemake.f-Onethingwewouldhopefornext time—ourPlanestobeneartoourexhibitionarea andnottheothersideofthefield,asthistime.

FollowingWWI,Germanywasverymuchrestrictedintheuseofpoweredaircraftandsoturnedto experimentingwithgliders.By1921astounding resultswerebeingachievedinpartsofEuropeand enthusiasmwasthussparkedMTinEngland.leading tothecompetitionsforglidersatIlford.Sussex,in 1922.
Nowadays,thehang-glidingfraternityarelooking atfittingsmallenginestotheirmachines—soitwasin 1922and.thefollowingyear,1923,ruleswereformulatedforamotor-glidercompetitioninEnglandtobe heldatLympne.Kent.TheDukeofSutheilandgave aprizeof£500andtheDailyMail£1,000.The principalrulebeingthatengineswerenottoexceed 750ccandthewinnerwastobethegreatestdistance flownononegallonofpetrol.Additionally,therewas atransporttest,inwhichtheaircrafthadtobetransportedadistanceofonemilewithitswingsfoldedand beabletopassthroughatenfootwidegateway.Main honoursofthecompetition\Vein10theEnglish ElectricWren,whichhadobtainedHOmphandwasto beseenHyingon27th11.111C,1976atOldWarden!
Thefirstoftwo1924LympeTrialslion4erCygnets lbs.Althoughthe"Moth-hadalreackflown,its Cirrusenginewastooheavytoqualifyandindeed.in somequarters,theMothwaslookedonasbeing outsidethescopeofHightaeroplane-.
In1926competitionswereagainheldatLympne andthepreviousshortlandingandtake-otiplus transportationruleswerepresent,plusanewformula givingan'indexofperfoimance' viz:— Pounds carriedlimesnilles,flown. Ina sixdaymeeting, thiswaspoundsoffuelconsumedflownoveradistance of2.000miles.ThewinnerwasP.E.W.S.Bulmanin theHawkerCygnetwithBertHaywardashisengineer• passenger.Theirachievedfigureofmeritwas2,200, withanAvroAvianclosebehindwith2.100.Thislast aircraftutilisedtheArmstrongSiddeleyGenetengine, asdidsomeMothslatersuppliedtotheRoyalAir Force.Perhapsonaccountofitsduralmag.shaft, theGenetweighedjustunder170lhs.ThecontemporaryPobjoy,withasimilarhorse-power,weighed40 lbs.lessbut.unfortunately.brokeacon-rodjust beforethecompetition.Inthethirteenyearsofpeace remaining,theultra-lightsankintoobscurityandit wastheheaviertwo-seathi-planeswhichwereinthe vanguardofthe-popular-flyingmovement.

ThefirstbirthdayoftheSocietyisnowpast,andit istimetotakestockofitsprogress.Theseconddisplay day,whichisinfactthefirsttoberunbytheSociety entirelyonitsown:thepreviousDuxfordAirDays havingbeeneitherImperialWarMuseumventuresor jointprojectswithotherorganisations,hasalsopassed.
Duxfordisnowwellandtrulyonthetrim)inthe aircraftpreservationworld,withalready oneor the largestmembershiptotalsamongtheBritishAircraft PreservationCouncil,andcertainlythefinestcollection ofairlinersopentothepublictobefoundanywhere. No-oneelsecanclaimtohavethe West turbo-prop airlinerintheworld,theft/is/transatlanticjetairliner. andnowthe Proem' airlinerinserviceaswell!
Aircraftpreservationisinvoguenowadays,'The tremendoussuccessoftheShuttleworthCollectionhas broughttothepublic'snoticethedelightsofseeing earlyaircraftintheair,andatDuxford.withitshard runwayandlargerhangarage,wehopetoextendthe rangeofoldaircraftwhichcanbepreservedandkept flying.Eventhoughsomeofthelargeraircraftarefar tooexpensiveeventoconsiderflyingatthepresent time,itispossiblethatinthefuturefundswillbefound toputthemintheairagain.Afterall,onlytwentylive yearsago,thecostofownMgandrunningamotorcar
wasbeyondthereachoftheminority,whiletoownand flyaWorldWarIIfighterwouldhavebeeninconceivableAndyet,atDuxfordnow,wehaveajet lighterandaheavytwin-engineplanebothprivately owned.TheDuxt-ordAviationSocietywilltherefore continuetocollectthesemoremodern-vintage-aircraft,andkeeptheminflyingcondition,hopingthat onedaytheymaytaketotheairagain.
Theolderaircraftare,however,theonesthatlend themselvesbestbothtorestorationandtoeconomical Hyingoncetheyhavebeenrestored.TheSocietywas verypleasedtohavetheShuttleworthAvroAnson deliveredtoDuxfordforacompleterebuildtoflying condition,andithasalsoacquiredaDeHavilland RapidewithanexpiredCertificate or Airworthiness. TheAnsonhasbeencompletelystrippeddowntoits lighttubularframework.andnowsomewhatresemblesherring-bonewiththefish-headstillattached! TheRapidehashadahardlifeasaparachutejumpers' aircraft,andwillnowhavetobestrippedandrecovered.RapidesoftensutlerFromdampwhichcauses deteriorationinthebottomfuselagemembers.andit willprobablyhavetohavereplacedsomeoftheplywoodinthatarea.Theprospectofbayingoneofthese grandoldbiplaneswithafullCertificateofAir-
worthinessfortheuseoftheSocietywillbewellworth alltheworkandcostinvolved.
TheSocietyisalsostillworkingontheBristol Bolingbroke(that'smoreorlessthesameaircraftasa Blenheim)andtheSpitfirecrewarenowworkingon anotherSpitfire,thebluePhoto-ReccePR11which stoodoutsideatShuttleworthformanyyears.Another aircraftbeingrebuiltistheRI_8of1918vintage. althoughthiswillnotflyagainbecauseitbelongsto theImperialWarMuseumtandtheMuseumpolicyis tokeepitsaircrakontheground.
Onthelivingside,theeventoftheyearwasthe arrivaloftheBattleofBritainflightforaphotographic sortiewiththe13-24Liberatorbeforeitfinallyleft DuxfordfortheU.S.A.TheLancaster.Spitfireand Hurricanewerejoinedontheapronbythe13-17 FlyingFortressandtheMustangaswellastheLiberatortomakeanunforgettableline-upforthephotographers.
Amongtheimportanteventsoftheyearhasbeen therescueoftheVickersViscountG-ALWFforthe ViscountPreservationSociety.Thisoldairliner.the secondturbopropairlinertoenterserviceandthe oldeststillalive.wasflown1.0SpekeAirportatLiverpoolonthe12thApril1972forpermanentexhibition there.TheincreasedsecurityregulationsatLiverpool Airporthas e meantthatthepubliccouldnolongerbe admittedtotheareaoftheairportwhereitstood,and theairportauthoritieshadthreatenedtohaveitbroken upunlessitwasremoved_Theaircraftwasaccordingly boughtatscrapvaluebytheViscountPreservation 'Ernst,whoappealedtotheDuxford Aviation Society togiveitahome.AcrewofSocietymembersaccordinglymadethelongjourneytoLiverpool inorderto dismantletheaircraftforroadtransport,andafter somemonthsworkitwassuccessfullytransportedto Duxford.Afterre-assembly,theaircraftwillberepaintedinitsCambrianairlinecolourscheme.
ItseemsalargejumptomakefromaircraftpreservationtoaMotorwayenquiry,butDuxfordairfieldis nowthreatened,asiswellknown,bytheMI1Motorway.TheMotorwayConstructionUnitplannedthe routebackin1970,whentheairfieldwaslargely disused,andtheroutenowproposedwouldcut some 1100 feetolTtheendoflherunway,thusreducingits effectiveuseablelengthbyoverone-third.Itwasnot untilMarch1976thatafurtherenquirywasheld,and theSocietyputforwardanalternativeroutearguing beforetheMinistryInspectorthatDuxfordwasworthy ofpreservationusawholeandthattherunwaywastoo valuabletobedestroyedinsuchfashion.TheConstructionUnitwentsomewaytowardsmeetingthe objectionbyagreeingtolowertheMotorwaysomesix feetbelowground.butwouldnotagreetodeviatethe route.Theresultoftheenquirywillobviouslyhavea

ItwaswithgreatdelightthattheSocietylearned thatitwas toreceiveoneof thepre-productionConetudesfromH.M.Government.WhateverthecontroversyoverConcorde'sprofitability,theinterestin thisaircraftisimmense,anditisboundtobea continumgattractiontovisitorsformanyyearsto come.Itisaparticularlyworthwhileadditiontothe
civilairlinercollectionatDuxford,andisofficial recognitionofalltheworkwhichhasbeendoneby theSocietytodate.
Atthedateofgoingtopress,itwasnotcertainwhen Concordewouldarrive.Itfirsthadtocompleteallthe testsitwasduetocarryout,andtheninadditionto theweatherconditionshavingtobejustrightforits arrivalatDuxford,therehadalsotobefourengines thatcouldbespared,andagroundcrewwhocould cometoDuxfordandremovetheenginesfortheir returntoWeybridge.
ByjoiningDuxfordAviationSocietyonehasthe chanceofbeinginvolvedintheuniqueexperimentofa majormuseumopeningitsdoorstooutsideenthusiast help.Already,over20,000man-hourshavebeen workedbyvolunteers.TheMuseumhasbenefitedfrom assistancefar more extensivethanitcouldeverpayfor; thevolunteershavehadafarbetterchanceofseeing andhandlingtheexhibitsthantheyeverwouldinthe ordinaryway:andtheaircraftthemselveshavehadthe
careandattentionthatonlyrealenthusiasmcangive. TheImperialWarMuseumReserveCollection,from beingjustastoreforitemswhichcouldnotbeexhibited,isnowoneofthepremieraircraftcollections inthecountry.
Maintenanceofthestaticaircraftisnotnecessarily anexpert'sjob.Paintstripping,cleaning,treatnigwith preservativeandmuch or theminormetalorwoodworkwhichisinvolvedinrestorationisdonebypeople withnotraininginaviationengineering.Peoplewho loathecleaningtheirowncarshavespentalltheweekendhelpingtowashdownunairlinerthirtytimesthe size!

ThePFAwasaskedifwewouldliketoparticipate intheeventand,ofcourse,wedid.Theregularsfrom theHeston/HanworthStrut,supportedasusualby 328SquadronATC.gatheredontheSaturday morningreadytowelcomeourvisitors.Theorganisers askedifwewouldhelpmarshallallvisitingaircraft, whichwewerepleasedtodo.Themorningstarted withDougArnold'snowlargecollectionofWarbirds beingputondisplayand,bylunchtime,manyvisitors hadjoinedthem,readyfortheflyingdisplaywhich wasduetocommenceat13.00hrs.local.

Theonlyrealdifficulty-onthisStauning/Rotterdam legwasaminorlanguageproblemskthBramenATC, whenthecontrollermisunderstoodourreported crossingoftheBramenzoneboundaryandweheard himheavilyaccentedandvsithsomefrustration. NowIneedhardlytellyouthatLaurierequired verylittleencouragementtorunthecallertoearthin theheartofLondon.whereitturnedoutthatthe enginewasindeedcompleteandtheaeroplane attachedtheretowasagenuinepre-warhomebuild LutonNIinoralso,moreorlessintactinawarehouse, oneofitsseveralhomessince1939.Themachinewas builtbyaNILMasonandhisson.Mr.Masonwasa one-timeemployeeofShortsatRochesterandfather andsonconstructedtheaeroplanetogetherbetween 1937and1939.BySeptember1939allwasprettywell CCM) pleteandanumberofenginerunswerecarried outbutthecessationofallprivateflyingactEitiesput anendtotheirendeavoursandthebitswerestored awaytoawaithappierdays.It W. asneverregisteredand neverboreaconstructor'snumberolanykind.In about1950itisreputedthattheenginewasrun,but unfortunatelythcravagesoftimehavetakentheirtoll oftheairframe.Manyofthemetalfittingsmewell rustedandsomeofthewoodworkhasbeenthebirth-
placeofmanyahealthywoodwormovertheyears. However,everythingiscompleteandrelicshavebeen broughttolifefromfarworsecondition,sowho knows—perhapsonedaythisexamplemayseedaylight underitswheels.
Theaircrafthasanovelfeaturedesignedintothe structurebyMr.Mason.Insteadofthetwowings joiningatthecentrehne.a2'6"sectionhasbeenincorporatedmountedonafour-strut.wire-braced cabanestructureatthemainsparinsteadofthemore commontripodarrangement of latter-dayexamples. Thiscentresectionhingesverticallyaboutthefront sparpoint,thesmalldoorflapontheportsidebuilt intomanypre-warMinors,beingduplicatedonthe starboardsidetoaccommodatethetrailingedgeof thesection.Theingsthenfoldback,the'Vliftstrutsfoldingupoutwardstoclipintofittingsatthe wingtips.Quiteaneatarrangementfromthatinnovativeperiodbetweenthewars—afairlycommon featureoflightaeroplanesoftheday,foldingwMgs.
Someoneweknowisalreadyworkingonafolding wingversionbasedontheMinor.Theprinciplesare verysimpleandthereareseyeralschemestochoose lion,onmachinesfromeraspast.Withrisingcosts andhangaragealwaysatapremiumhowabout makingaresolutionfor1977—thinkFOLDING WINGS-FOLDINGWINGS-FOLDINGWINGS -FOLDINGWINGS-FOLDINGWINGS.
Withthewingfinishedandtheproofloadingchecks completed,workhadbeenprogressingatareasonable paceonthefuselagedetails,suchasframesandattachmentbrackets,alsocuttingandbendingthelongerons totherequiredlengthandshape.
Forthisoperationwemadealong,flattablefrom blockboardandscraptimber.Usingthis,webeganto assemblethefuselagedetails.Firstofall,theupper fuselagelongeronswerelaidGattothetabletopand securedinthepositionsrequired.Withtheseinplace theframeswerethendrilledoffandheldwithskin clips,therestofthefuselagestructurebeingstraight forward,butparticularattentionwaspaidtokeeping thingssquare.Otherthanthat,themajorpartofthe fuselageisreasonablysimplewiththeproblemareas mainlycentredaroundthefuselagejointingplates. Thesearesituatedwherethefuselagebeginstotaper andarepositionedbothinsideandoutsidetheskins. Thetroublewiththisisthenumberofdifferentlength boltsneededatthesepositions.whichfromahomebuilderspointofviewpresentsaconsiderableproblem whenitconiestoobtainingtheminsmallnumbers. Thesamethingappliesattheenginebulkhead.where thelongeronsarereinforcedtotaketheengineloads andhereagainthebuilderisfacedwithobtainingtar toomanydifferentlengthbolts.Ithinkaneasierway couldhavebeensoughttoachievethesameresultat allthesepoints,thereforeeliminatingoneofthe reasonswhymanyhomebuildersbecomefrustrated andneverfinishtheirprojects.
Fortheenginebulkheadweusedstainlesssteel,and rivetedthiswith-MONEL-rivets,thisistoreduce thereactionbetweendissimilarmetals,asthestainless steelisrivitedtoL65DuralextrusionBeforeriveting, everythingwasgivenacoatofprimerandaliberal coatofjointingcompound,priortothefinalassembly.
Someproblenswereencounteredwhenwecameto fitthetopdecking,whichwascausedbyoneofthe supportframesbeingthewrongshape.Weovercame thisbyfittingtheforwardframeinpositionandthe extremeaftone,thenwelaidthetopskinoverthese andallowedittotakeupitsnaturalcurve.Itwasthen heldinpositionwithclips,whilstacardboardtemplate wasmadetothecorrectcurvaturetakenupbythe skin,andthenthenewframewasmanufactured accordingly
Whereverpossiblewehaveusedcountersunkrivets duringtheconstructionofthisparticular"SPRITE-, cutcountersinkingbeingusedontheISswgskins, wheretheskinthicknesswouldpermitit,anddimple countersinkingintheareaswhere22swgand26swg skinswereused.Anyrivetsfoundtobeslightlyproud havebeenmilledofftogive,wehope,afinishafter paintingwhichshouldbefreeofprotrudingrivet heads,bumpsanddepressions,whichareoftenfound intheeverydaymetal-skinnedlightaircraft.
Aluckybreakoccurredforuswhenwecameto installthecanopyandwindscreen,whichcameinthe formofapairofMk.3JetProvostcanopieswhich cameupfordisposalatWarton.Asitturnedoutthey werealmostaboutthesamewidthasourcockpit,and withalittlejugglinghavebeenmadetolitperfectly. NIovingontotheenginecowls,thesehavebeena jointeffortbetweenFrankRycroliandBarryCastle. whoarewelladvancedwithanother-SPRITE'',and NIikeJonesoftheDerwentFlyingClubwhomadethe glassfibrecowlsfromthemouldingproducedby FrankandBarry.Theyareverynicelymadeandwe
thinktheygivetheaircraftgoodlooks.Thetimespent infittingthemhasbeenwellworththeeffortbecause, whenyouhavetheendinsight,oneissorelytempted torushthingsinordertogetflying.Wehaveavoided temptationbystickingtoouroriginallinesofthought, andthatwasnottocutcorners.butonlytoflythe thingwheneverythingwasabsolutelycorrect.Ihave spentroughlyayearfittingthemandconnectingup enginecontrolsandindicators.whichItrulythought wasgoingtoLakemeabouttwomonths.WhenIlook atthefinishedproductnow,Ifeelveryproudofwhat wehaveachievedandasincerethankyoumustgoto MikeJonesandmytwogoodfriendsinBarnet.fora beautifullymanufacturedpairofenginecowlsand spinner.
Theseatingisfullyacfiustableforwardandaftand fulllapandshoulderharnesshasbeenfitted.Royand myselftookatriptoafirmnearChesterandboughtan excellentpairofsteel-framedcarrallyseats,thesegive verygoodlateralsupportandareextremelycomfortable,soflyingtheaircraftforthreeorfourhours shouldnotbeanuncomfortablebusiness.
SoniclocalstiffeningofthecockpitHOW'hadtobe carriedouttoattachtheaftseatmountingsandlap straps,butotherwisetheyfitverywellandmakea terrificdifferencetothecockpitinteriorandlookvery attractive.
Asforthecolour,wehavedoneafewschemeson paper.butthefinaldecisionhasnotbeentakensofar aswhichofthemtoadopt.Ithinkthebasecolourwill bewhitewithanothertwocolourstobechosenforthe fancybits.
Regardinginstruments,theaircrafthasafullB.F.P. togetherwithacentreconsolepanel,thisispositioned betweenthetwooccupantsandcarriesengineinstrumentsandfuelcontentsgauging,engineR.P.M.being separatefromthispanelandpositionedonthemain flyingpaneltothePortsideoftheflightinstruments. Amongthesubjectsdiscussedwere:engineering, privateairstrips,theLightPlaneTrialsandareporton therun-downmeetingoflastyear'sInternational RallyCtte.WasYOURStrutrepresented?Wehad Repsfromsuchfar-awayplacesasMontgomeryshire, LancashireandYorkshire.Discussionalsotookplace onthevenueforthePFAChristmasParty,whichin thepasthasbeenheldattheKronfieldClubfollowing theDecemberCouncilMeeting.AsthatClubhasbeen Vandalised,thisisnotpossiblethisyear.Wehopethat bythetimeyoureadthis,asuitableannouncement willhavebeeninsertedwithinthesepagesasthe Magazinegoestopress.
Thereweretwooverseasralliesofparticularinterest tousthisyear.Thefirst,atSt.Junieninmid-France, wastheRSArallyandthePFAwererepresentedwith alooseformationofsixwhichmadethejourneyin company,plusthreeotherBritisharrivals.Includedin thesixwereourChairman,MikeVaisey,CliveCanningandMikeHallam.TheroutewasShoreham,Le Touciet,Dreux,Amboise,DierréandSt.Junien.I understandthatagoodtimewashadbyall,although thefacilitiesforfestivitiesatthesecontinentalrallies apparentlyfallshortofevenourmuchcritisedSywell standards!
ThesecondimportantRallyplannedforwasat Rotterdam.Sadly,thiswasarrangedfortheendofthe summerand,asweallknow,theweatherdidanabrupt aboutturnatthistime.Theweekendchosenforthe Rotterdamshowwasquitetheworstthisyearandthe
onlyhomebuilderwhomadeitbyair(andonintruments)fromtheU.K.,wasCliveCanning.Thiswasa greatpity,asmuchentertainmentwaslaidon.Those affirmingtheirintentiontogoandsobookingthemselvesaplace,whichhadtobedoneaboutthree month'sbefore,wouldhavehadatotallyfreeweekend, nottomentionaroomintheHilton.Imightaddthat ourChairman,whohadbeendesignatedaJudgeof thearrivingaircraft,madeitbylandandsea,after severalattemptsbyair,but I doubtifthereweremany aircrafttogreethim,suchwastheweatherthatweekend!
