FactorsAffectingStallSpeed

Thefollowingarticlehasbeenreprintedfromthe U.S.DepartmentofTransportation,VI'f?Pilot Exam-o-Grams.

Recentreportsindicatethatapproximately80% ofallaccidentsarepilotcaused.Themajorcauseof fatalaccidentsislistedas"failedtomaintain airspeed(orflyingspeed)resultinginastall." Althoughmanyofthesestallsmayhaveoccurred underthestressandduressofotherproblemssuchas disorientationduringlimitedvisibilityoratnight, improperdivisionofattention,etc.,areviewof statisticalanalysesofwrittenexaminationsindicates alackofknowledgeandunderstandingofthe variousfactorsthatcancauseorcontributetoastall. Thisarticlediscussessomeofthemoreimportant, ever-presentfactorsofwhichthepilotmusthavean understandingsothathewillinstinctivelyavoidor compensateforsituations,conditions,andattitudes whichmayleadtoastall-evenunderstressandduress ofadditionalproblemshemayencounterinflight.

Whatcausesanairplanelostall? Allstallsare causedbyexceedingthecriticalangleofattack. Knowingthisparticularfactdoesnotnecessarilyhelp thepilot.Whatismoreimportanttothepilotisto knowwhatfactorsarelikelytocontributetoorcause thisangleofattacktobeexceeded.

is itnecessaryfortheairplanetohavearelatively lowairspeedinorderforittostall? No!Anairplane canbestalledatanyairspeed.Allthatisnecessaryis toexceedthecriticalangleofattack.Thiscanbe doneatanyairspeedifthepilotappliesabruptor excessivebackpressureontheelevatorcontrol.A stallthatoccursatarelativelyhighspeedisreferred toasanacceleratedorhighspeedstall.

Isitnecessaryfortheairplanetohayearelatively highpitchattitudeinorderforittostall? No!An airplanecanbestalledinanyattitude.Repeating againthestatementmadeabove-allthatisnecessary istoexceedthecriticalangleofattack.Thiscan

occurinanyattitudebyapplicationofabruptor excessivebackpressureontheelevatorcontrol.

Doesweightaffectthestallingspeed? Yes!Asthe weightoftheairplaneisincreased,thestallspeed increases.Duetothegreaterweight,ahigherangleof attackmustbemaintainedtoproducetheadditional lifttosupporttheadditionalweightinflight. Therefore,thecriticalangleofattackwillbereached atahigherairspeedwhenloadedtomaximumgross weightthanwhenflyingsolowithnobaggage.

Doesthecentre-of-gravitylocation(weight distribution)affectstallspeed? Yes!Thefarther forwardthecentreofgravity,thehigherthestalling speed.Thefartheraftthecentreofgravity,thelower thestallingspeed.

Doesthismeanthattheweightshouldbe distributedintheairplanesothattheCGisasfarto therearaspossible? No!Thismaypresentproblems withstabilitythatwillfaroutweighanyadvantages obtainedbythedecreaseinstallspeed.

Doflapsaffectstallingspeed? Yes!Theuseof flapsreducesstallingspeed.TheStallSpeedChart (Figure2)takenfromanairplaneflightmanual illustratesthisfact.Thisalsocanbereadilyverified bycheckingthecolourcodingonanyairspeed indicator.Thelowerairspeedlimitofthewhitearc (power-offstallingspeedwithgearandflapsinthe landingconfiguration)islessthanthelowerairspeed limitofthegreenarc(power-offstallingspeedinthe cleanconfiguration).

Thisfactisimportanttothepilotinthatwhen makingno-flaplandings,ahigherindicatedairspeed shouldbemaintainedthanwhenlandingwithflaps. Themanufacturers'recommendationsshouldbe adheredtoastoapproachspeedswithvarious configurations.

Doesanincreaseinaltitudeaffecttheindicated airspeedatwhichanairplanestalls? Anincreasein altitudehasnoeffectonthe indicated airspeedat whichanairplanestallsataltitudesnormallyusedby generalaviationaircraft.Thatis, forallpractical purposes, theindicatedstallingspeedremainsthe sameregardlessofaltitudeinthisrange.Thisfactis importanttothepilotinthatthesameindicated airspeedshouldbemaintainedduringthelanding approachregardlessoftheelevationordensity altitudeattheairportoflanding.(Followthe manufacturer'srecommendationsinthisregard.)If higherthannormalapproachairspeedisused,a longerlandingdistancewillberequired.

Doesanincreaseinaltitudeaffectthetrueairspeed atwhichanairplanestalls? Sincetrueairspeed normallyincreasesasaltitudeincreases(foragiven indicatedairspeed),thentrueairspeedatwhichan airplanestallsgenerallyincreaseswithanincreasein altitude.Undernon-standardconditions (temperaturewarmerthanstandard)thereisan additionalincreaseintrueairspeedabovethe indicatedairspeed.

Ofwhatsignificanceisthistothepilot?It is significantinthatwhenlandingathigherelevations orunderhigherdensityaltitudes,heisoperatingat highertrueairspeeds(andthereforehigher groundspeeds)throughouttheapproach, touchdown,andlandingroll.Thisresultsinagreater distancetoclearobstaclesduringtheapproach,a longergroundroll,andconsequently,theneedfora longerrbnway.lf,inaddition,thepilotisoperating underthemisconceptionthatahigherthannormal indicatedairspeedshouldbeusedunderthese conditions,thesituationisfurthercompoundeddue totheadditionalincreaseingroundspeed.

Doesturbulenceaffectstallingspeed?Yes! Turbulencecancausealargeincreaseinstalling speed.Encounteringanupwardverticalgustcauses anabruptchangeinrelativewind.Thisresultsinan equallyabruptincreaseinangleofattackwhich couldresultinastall.Thisfactisimportanttothe pilotinthatwhenmakinganapproachunder turbulentconditions,ahigherthannormalapproach speedshouldbemaintained.Also,inmoderateor greaterturbulence,anairplaneshouldnotbeflown abovemanoeuveringspeed.

Atthesametime,itshouldnotbeflowntoofar belowmanoeuveringspeedsinceasuddensevere verticalgustmaycauseaninadvertentstallduetothe higherangleofattackatwhichitwillalreadybe flying.

Doesangleofbankaffectstallingspeed?Yes! As theangleofbankincreasesinaconstantaltitude turn,thestallingspeedincreases.Thisiseasilyseen fromtheStallSpeedCharts(figs.2and4)which showtheincreaseinstallspeedastheangleofbank increases—fig.4intermsofpercent,fig.2theactual valuesforoneairplane.Ata60)bank,stallingspeed is40%greaterthaninstraight-and-levelflight(25-27 mphforthespecificexample.)Atanglesofbank

Doesloadfactoraffectstallingspeed? Yes!Asthe loadfactorincreases,stallingspeedincreases.When theloadfactorishigh,stallingspeedishigh.A comparisonofthetwocharts(Figs.4and5)should easilyshowthisrelationship.Loadfactoristheratio oftheloadsupportedbythewingstotheactual weightoftheairplaneanditscontents.Ataload factorof2,thewingssupporttwicetheweightofthe airplane;ataloadfactorof4,theysupportfour timestheweightoftheairplane.Normalcatagory airplaneswithamaximumgrossweightoflessthan 4,000poundsarerequiredtohaveaminimumlimit loadfactorof3.8(Thelimitloadfactoristhatload factoranairplanecansustainwithouttakinga permanentsetinthestructure.)Notefromtheload factorchart(Fig.5)thatthisminimumlimitload factorisattainedinaconstantaltitudeturnatabank ofapproximately75°.Alsonotefromthestallspeed chart(Fig.4)thatatthisangleofbank,thestall speedistwiceasgreatasinstraight-and-levelflight. Whatfactorscauseanincreaseinloadfactor? Any manoeuveringoftheairplanethatproducesan increaseincentrifugalforcewillcauseanincreasein loadfactor.Turningtheairplaneorpullingoutofa diveareexamplesofmanoeuveringthatwillincrease thecentrifugalforceandthusproduceanincreasein loadfactor.Whenyouhaveacombinationof turningandpullingoutofadive,suchasrecovering fromadivingspiral,youare,ineffect,placing yourselfindoublejeopardy.Thisiswhyyoumust avoidhighspeeddivingspiralsorifyouaccidentally getintoone—becarefulhowyourecover. Doesspeedaffectloadfactor? Speeddoesnot,in itself,affectloadfactor.However,ithasa pronouncedeffectonhowmuchofanincreasein loadfactorcanbeproducedbystrongverticalgusts, orbythepilotthroughabruptorexcessive applicationofbackpressureontheelevatorcontrol. Thisiswhyairspeedshouldbereducedto manoeuveringspeedorbelowifmoderateorgreater turbulenceisencountered.Atmanoeuveringspeedor below,theairplaneisstressedtohandleanyvertical gustthatnormallywillbeencountered.Also,below thisspeed,thepilotcanmakeabruptfulldeflection oftheelevatorcontrolandnotexceedthemaximum loadfactorforwhichtheairplaneisstressed.
