AnotherSywellhaspassedandwithout doubtitwasabiggersuccessthanever.A successbecauseeveryoneenjoyed I hemselvesandfeltitwaswellworthwhile.A successbecausetherewereMorenem planesthanever.whateverthetype.There werebetteraeroplanesthanever,indeed thestandardofaircraftintheparkwas verygoodandrepresentedthelovingcare thatPFAmembersputintotheirhobby. Thefinishoftheseaircraftwaswaybeyond thatseeninthemoreconlmercialscene

Hownice,too,toseesomanyvisitors frontabroadespeciallythosewhobrought theirownultralightaircraftacrossthe Channelfromsomanycountries.Letus hopethatsonicoftheotherEuropean countrieswhodonothaveregulations whichviewtheuloalightasfavourablyas overherewillbeabletolearnfromusso thattheircountrymenwillbeabletobuild andflyultralightsaswedo.Itisnotoften appreciatedthattheU.K.hasoneofthe leastrestrictiveapproachestothehomebuilderanywhereandthedisplayatSywell showsthatitcanbedonewithoutsacrifice tosafety.

Havinggivenpraisetoourown authoritieswemustsayhowdisappointing itwasthatnoneofthemcametohavea look,particularlywhenreptesenattives of similarauthoritiesfromabroadcamefor alook-see.Surelyitisworthwhilehavinga lookatthewayhundredsoflightaircraft,

manywithoutradio,canbehandled efficientlyandwithsafety.On(heSaturday itwasquitecommontosecmorelhan twentyaircraftinthecircuitatonetime withafurthersixontheapproach.Once theylandedtheywerehandledquite superblyby(heATCCadetswhodisplayedthedisciplineandcommonsense ofmanyexperiencedprofessionals.

Theonlycloudwhichappearedonthe horizonwasthattheweatherintheNorth ofEnglandstoppedanumberofmembers reachingSywellin(heirownmachines, however,tothosewhocouldnotmakeit betterlucknextyearwhensurelySywell willbebiggerandbelletthanever. TheSywellspiritisnowcatchingon andmoretruehomebuildersarecoming eachyear.Ourrecordsshowthoughthat the attendanceatSmellstillonlyrepresentsasmallcutofthehomebotiding populationofthecountry.Manyofthese honiebuilderstoe'loners'whobuildtheir aircraftalmostentirelyunaidedandtend tobelockedupintheirworkshopshardat work.Tothosepeoplewesaydon'tforge( thatotherslikeyouwouldliketoswop notesandshareproblemsandifyoucan makenextyearpleaseconicalongwith youraircraftevenwitmeansbringingiton atrailerbecauseitisnotquitefinished.

Bythetimethisappearsinprintthe SywellCommitteewillhavede-briefedat itswind-downsessionandplanswillhave

beenlaidfornextyear.Onethingis obviouswithoutadoubtandthatisitwill needmorehelpersandmoregoodwillthan lasttimeandletushope(hatthenew bloodelectedtotheCommitteeatthe AGMwillsetaworthyexampleofa workingcommitteewhichdoeslhinusand getsonwiththejob.

WiththisissueofPFmanyofyouwill ha‘,ereceivedthemagazineinanewwrapping.Thiswrappinghasbecomenecessary becauseoftherisingpostalcostsandhas enabledustogoalongwaytowardsoffsettingtheextrachargesforcedonus.The newstylelabellingshouldalsohelpthe officetoarrangeaspeedierdespatchofthe magazineonceitisreceivedfromthe printers.Theincreasedpostagecharges havehitthePFAparticularlyhardasa largeproportionofPFAmattersaredealt withbypost.Atwentyfivepercent increaseonthesmallestpackagesnecessitate:,economiesfromelsewhere.Not contentwithincreasingthcchargesthe PostOfficeannouncedthattheycouldno longeracceptunsealedenvelopes.Have youevertriedlickingdown1500envelopes —largesize?

"WhiskyTango-hasbeenflyingnowfortwoanda nalfyears,duringwhichtimeshehasflown270hours inatotalof500flights.IhopethatinthefollowingI canpassonsomeofthepleasureofflyingone'sown home-builtaeroplane,inthehopethatitwillencouragethosestillintheseeminglyendlessstruggleto continuebuilding.

HerfirstflightwasonagreyNovemberafternoonin 1971.Allwentverysmoothly—itjusthadto—but then,ofcourse,Idhaditonmymindforthelast coupleofyears.ftwasafeelingexactlythesameas one'sfirstsolo:toherememberedinthesameway. Justonebigcircuitfollowedbyaprettythorough inspectionofallvitalparts.Luckily,theweatherwas goodforthenextfewdayssothetestflyingcontinued uninterrupted,allflightsbeingshort.Ialwayshadan uncomfortablefeelingthatapipeorcablewasworking loose—Imustadmittotakingthecowlingsoffafter eachflightjusttomakesurethatallwaswellwithin.

ALthat lime itseemedawfullyimportantthatthe enginebehavedasitshould.Thenextbigepicwas

thetwohourendurancetest,thisfeltliketwodaysas youare,ofcourse,restrictedtoyourdistancefromthe airfieldandmostairspacearoundRedhillbelongsto biggeraeroplanes.

FivehourswassoonupandtheCertificateofAirworthinessappliedfor.Ofcourse,bynowitwasmidwinterbutwiththecomingofthebetterweatherall sortsofthingsweredone.Thcgreatestofdreamswhilst buildingbeingfulfilled:crosscountries,airdisplays, rallies,farmers'strips,cross-channelflight,breakfast patrolsandformationflying.

Theserviceabilityoftheaeroplanehasbeenoutstanding.Ihaveneverhadtocancelaflightbecauseof asnag.ApartfronttheannualC.ofA.workIruna 25or30hourcheck,whichcoincideswiththeengine oilchange.rfindinthiswaytheworkiscutdownat theendoftheyear.Thetailspringinitiallyshowed itselftoberatherweaksoanadditionalstrongerleaf wasputin.Thespinnerwasalsoalwaysdeveloping cracksuntilsuitablyreinforced.

Nowfortheflyingqualities.Ifindheravery pleasanttouringaeroplane,verystable,ofcourse, withthetipdihedral.Thecontrolsarequitelightand wellharmonised—inthecruisethestickisrather forward,andIthinkagoodmodificationwouldbeto weldabendinittobringthetopbackabout4inches. AswithallothertypesofJodeltheelevatorneedsa powerfultrimmer.Theoneshownonthedrawings shouldberegardedasaminimumsize.Thestick forcesarequitenoticeableifspeedalterationsare madewithoutcarefulre-trimmingandaileronsget quiteheavywithspeed;this,Ithink,ispartlyaresult oftheshortstick.

Fortheinitialflightsanarbitrary60knotswas chosenbothforclimbandapproach.Ifindthe approachspeedcanbeadjusteddownwardsto50knots forshortfieldlandingsandupto65knotsingusty conditions.Ihaveflownhermanytimesinwindsof22 kts,gusting30ktsandcrosswindsof12ktswithno problemwhatsoever,directionalresponsebeing excellentwiththepowerfulrudderandsteerabletail wheel.Sheismuchbetterbehavedontarmacthanthe DR1050type.

Withoutthebenefitofairbrakesorflapsandbeing rathercleanandlight,theaeroplanetendstofloat considerablyinthegroundeffect,and,ofcourse,the angleofapproachisrathershallow.However,the approachcanbereadilysteepenedbysideslipping, particularlywhenFullcontroldeflectionisusedin conjunctionwithaspeedof55knots.Withperseverencearateofdescentofabout1500ft/mincan beachieved.

Thestallisaprettygentleaffairifenteredfromlevel [light,withthemodificationofthewedgeonthe

leadingedgeofthewingthereisplentyofpre-stall buffet.Infact,withabout1400r.p.m.setupand40 ktsIAS,shejustsitsinalevelattitudegentlydescendingprovidingavibromassage.Thestall, enteredinaturnwithpoweron,usuallycausesawing todrop,sometimesquitequickly;theaircraftthen rotatesquiterapidlyintowhatwouldbeaspin. Applicationofsufficientrudderstopstheincipientspin immediately.

"WT"ispoweredbyaC90-14F,theemptyweightis around750lbs.Therateofclimbwhenflownsolois around1000ft/min.IhavefittedanEVRADI1281B propellerasstandardnow,thisgivesacruiseofaround 95ktsat2100r.p.m.andafuelconsumptionof44 g.p.h.Withthefronttankfullthismeans24hours safeenduranceand44hourswithbothfrontandrear tanksfull. I alsohaveaD1128413propellerwhichruns about300r.p.m.fasterbutthecruiseisalittleslower.

ACondorheatermuffisfittedtotheC90engine, providingplentyofhotairtothecarburettor,though theC90isnotpronetoicing.

Asfarasinstrumentationgoesitisfairlysimple, absolutelybasicwiththeadditionofanairdrivenDI whichmakescrosscountrytrackkeepingeasier.A cylinderheadtemperaturegaugewasaddedwhichwith oiltemperatureandpressureprovidesadequate informationontheengine'sbehaviour.AMc-Mullin 360channelVHFismountedontheparcelshelf becausetherewasnotenoughroomonthepanel,this radiobythewayisreallyexcellent.Forthosepeople whodon'tknowwhethertheyaregoingtofitaradio, don'tforgetthatwhenyouhaveputthewingand fuselagetogetheryoucannotgetinsidetoputthe aerialandgroundplanein.Mygroundplanewas

madefromaluminiumfoiltape2"widestuckontothe insideofthetopdecking,theaerialismidwaybetweenthecabinandrudder.

Nowtoreflectuponthebuildingsaga.Thebasic constructionisquitesimple,infactapartfromthe mainsparitislikemakingabigmodelaeroplane.The spardidinfacttakequitealongtime,butapproached inamethodicalwayitwasnotasdifficultasIhad beenassureditwouldbe.Tohelpconstructiona30' longtablewasmadeup,2'wide,theoutboardparts beinghingedsothattheycouldbeswungupordown inordertoconstructtheupperandlowerflanges accurately.Thetablewasthensetupwiththeoutboardtipsupandthecurvedwashoutonthelower flangeheldwithblockswhilethediaphragmsand rearfacewereglued on. Thiswasthensufficiently rigidtotakeoffthejigtovarnishtheinteriorandhave thefrontfacegluedon.Thesparcanthenbeusedasa

Lt.Col.Hartney,bornaCanadian,joinedtheArmy in1914,afterashortcareerasalawyer.Afterarriving inEnglandasaninfantrymanhetransferredtothe fledglingRoyalFlyingCorpsandservedwithdistinction,mainlypilotingthecumbersomeF.E.2Bin reconnaissancework.Atatimewhenthelifeexpectancyofapilotwasmeasuredinweeksratherthan yearshisexpertisekepthimsafeuntil1917whenhe wasshotdowninanencounterwiththeRichtofen "circus".ThesefirstthreeyearsoftheGreatWarare coveredwithinthespanofthefirstfewchaptersofthis book.Theremainderofthe350pagesaretakenup withaeulogiumoftheformationandoperational involvementoftheAmericanlstPursuitGroupfrom April1918totheArmisticeinNovemberofthatyear. Major,laterLt.Col.Hartneyisunstintinginhis praiseofallthingsAmerican,andthoughhedoes mentiontheinvolvementofotherAlliedforces,itis onlyenpassant.

Thebookiswellillustratedwithsomepreviously unseenphotographsoftheperiodthoughtheaccent isonthepersonalitiesratherthantheaircraft.

"WingsoverFrance" ispublishedasoneofaseries editedbyaStanleyM.Ulanoff,andisprovidedwitha luriddustjacketthatwouldnotbeoutofplaceona pre-war "Hotspur" or "Wizard". Sageadviceis tenderedtotheAmericanpowersthatbe,regarding theconductoffutureairwarsinthelatterpagesof Hartney'sbook.Theyindicatethatheknewagood dealaboutcombatflyinginthefirstGreatWar,but notagreatdealaboutaviation.Theimplicationofthe publishinghistoryisthatthebookwasfirstissuedin theU.S.A.in1940.Itwouldperhapshavebeen kindesttohaveleftitdecentlyburiedontheshelvesof theLibraryofCongress,foritaddsverylittletothe sceneofaviationhistorybybeingdisinterred.

Theauthorofanyworkonatechnicalsubject intendedtoexplainthatsubjecttothelaymanisfaced withthedauntingtaskofexpressinghimselfwith sufficientluciditytobeunderstoodwithoutatthe sametimeappearingtotreathisreadersasbeingsof lesserintelligence.Inanewbook, THEAVIATOR'S WORLD, byMichaelEdwards,thistaskhasbeenfaced andcompletedwithgreatsuccess.Thesub-title, "An EasyGuidetoAircraft,AirportsandAviationasa CareerandforPleasure", apartfromitsodduseof capitals,describesthecontentsaccurately;butunlike somesimilarpublicationsthisbookcanbereadby theexpertwithoutanyfeelingofnauseaortendency tohystericallaughter.

Withtheexceptionofthemanufacturingindustry, Mr.Edwardsexpoundsonthewholediamondof aviation,givesabriefbutadequatedescriptionofeach facet,andshewshoweachmarriestothewhole. Withintheconfinesof138pagesoftext,clearlinedrawingsandgoodhalf-toneillustrationsamplifythe author'sdescriptions.Theamountoftechnicaldetail whichwithoutanylossoffacthasbeenrenderedinto termswhicheventhemostnon-technicallymindedcan comprehendisoutstanding.Asoundbibliographyand comprehensiveindexareagoodbonus.

OnelovelymorninginSpring,aprofessionalpilot tookoffinhislittleprivateaircrafttoflytoanairfield abouttwentymilesaway.Theskywasclearblueand itwasajoytobealoft.

Abouttwelvemilesfromthefarmstripfromwhich hehadtakenoff,hecameuponafoggyarea.ftwas growingbiggerevenashelookedatit,butseemedtobe locatedmoretothewestofhimthantoanyother direction.Itthereforeseemedreasonabletoflyaround ittohisdestination.Oncethere,hecouldhappilyawait theclearanceofthewholefoggymess.Thedaywas suchthatit had todisperseand,sureenough,itsubsequentlydid,thoughnotsoonenoughtoavoidthe incidentIamgoingtodescribe.

Swanningalongtheeastsideofthebadarea,our pilotwasrelaxedinthelovelysunshine,untilhebegan torealisethatitwasclearabovehimbutlesssoaround him.Thefogwasgeneratingallovertheplaceandhe wasrapidlybeingenvelopedinit.

Heoptedtodescendquicklyandmakeaprecautionarylanding.However,onceoverasuitable fieldandatasensibleheighttobeginhisapproach,he begantoconsiderthepositionhewouldbein;he wouldhavetotelephoneandgetsomeonetobring transportforhismachine,loadthebeastsomehow andtrailerithome.Amiserableprospect,compared withasteadyflightbacktothefarmstripfromwhich hehadcome.Therehadbeennotraceofanyfogor cloudthere,sohecouldexpectclearconditionsifhe gotbackthere.

Openingthethrottle,heclimbedsteadilyintothe fogabovehim,carefullymaintainingtherequired compassheading.Thankheavenstherewasnowind toworryabout!Havingnoblind-flyinginstruments. hecarefullykeptthestickcentralanddriftindication

correct.Eventually,heemergedintoclearsunshine afteraboutfourtenseminutesofblindflight.Heading home,helandedwithoutincident.

How,youareasking,cananyoneflyalightaircraft withoutblind-flyinginstruments,inathickfog? Everyoneknowsthatyouendupinvertedordiving. Andsoyoudo,iftheaircraftisafixed-wing.Thiswas gyroplane.Thecompasskeptitonheading.Thc pieceofstringkeptitfromdriftingandpendulum effectkeptitrightwayupsolongasthestickwas centralandneutralinpitch.

Idonotintendtoborereaderswithyetanother stringofcommentsonhowtobuyandwhattobuy. Thetimeforthatisnowpast.However. I amgettinga greaternumberof'phonecallsandlettersthanever, allaskingwheretobuys/hgyrosorhowtobecomethe proudownerofonesomehow.

Itistruetosay.Ithink,thatallofthesafeand wholesomespecimenshavenowbeenboughtup. Therearestillsonicbitsofjunkcirculatingbutplease donotbetemptedtobuy.If I canhelpwithguidance, 'phonemeonDidcot2556intheeveningsorweekends.

Theproblemswiththesebargains,usuallypricedat €250upwards,isthatathickcoatofpaintcoversa multitudeofengineeringsinsandafewbitsofsoft alloy!Notsurprisingly,whenthe ARB surveyorscome toinspectthecraft,theywanttoknowsomethingof theirhistoryandyoujust fry togetthatfromoneof thevendorsofthese'baraainc.Itisanunfortunate factoflifethatgyroslooksosimplethatfolkthink theycanflythcmwithouttrainingorinstruction. Inevitably,somethinggetscrunchedandoutcomes thesoftalloyandarchitecturaltubingandpaintand theresultgetssoldoffquickly.Afterall,thesellercan alwaysclaimthatthebuyermusthavemadethemods. Itishardtorefutesuchstatementsinacourtoflaw.

Ononeoccasion,awould-bebuyeraskedmyadvice aboutamachine.Hedescriheditingreatdetailand hadbeenassuredthatitwasexactlyasoriginallybuilt. (Therewereoneortwoobvious,buttrivial,bothers suchasameltedpistonintheMac,becausethistwostrokehadbeenrunwithoutoil!Trivial,didIsay?). Anyway,theregistrationwasfinallymentionedandit turnedoutthat/hadoriginallybuiltthisgyro!Vet suchwerethenon-existentmodsthatIdidnoteven recogniseit!

Youmustacceptthattherearenobargaingyrosat pricesunder£600to£800.Tfyouwantone,youreally havetobuildoneandthatmeansbuyingthebasickit, orpartofit,fromBensenorBarnettintheStates.

ThenewengineisbeingassembledbyAutocavan ofAldershotandistohaveacapacityof2270cc,which shouldgiveita HP figureof80to90.Withthatsort ofurge,plustheexcellenttorqueoutputofVW engines,therewillbenoneedtokeepthepropeller revsupinthehigh3000's.Operatingatlowerrcvs meansaquieteraircraftandweallknowhowdesirable thatis!

Anyway,itwillbemostinterestingtoseetheoutcomeofthisexercise.Itseemsunlikelythatthc machinewillbereadybySywellbutitshouldbeairbornesoonafterwards.

Backin1946aU.S.ArmyL.I6Awasdoingatour ofdutyintheCivilAirPatrol.Rsyoungpilotwas demonstratinghisnewlyacquiredflyingskilltoan appreciativeandattractivepassengerandseeinga desertedstretchofmotorwayunderconstruction

nearbyhedecidedtolandtheaircraftatthatconvenientlyoutofthewayspot.Thelittlehighwingspotter planeglideddownatexactlytherightspeed.itsstar insigniaandwhitecodenumber47-797contrasting pretillywithitsolivedrabcolourscheme.Toobadthe motorwaysurfacewhichlookedsofirmfromtheair wasverysoftsand.Inthemomentoftouchdownthe undercarriagewasswiftlywhiskedawayandeverythingtumbledtoahaltinacloudofdust.Fortunately noonewashurt,theonlyinjurybeingabruised reputation,buttheAeroncaL.I6Awasbadly damagedandwassubsequentlysoldasscrap_The variousbitsandpieceswerepurchasedbyanenthusiastinAlabamawheretheyweregiventheloving caretreatmentandslowlytheairframe,whichhad startedlifeintheAeroncaCorp.plant.Middletown. ALEOPARDMOTH RE-APPEARS

Atfirstglance,thepictureoftheLeopardMothtrio couldbemistakenforaphotographfromthepre-war De-Havillandarchives.Itwasinfacttakenrecently, whenG-ACLLinthecentrewasrolledoutof ALVAIR'ShangaratCoventry,afteramajoroverhaul.

Wedecidedthatitwasanidealopportunityto photographthiselegantaircraftwithhertwostablemates,G-ACMNandG-ACMA,alsobasedat Coventry.

G-ACLLwasbroughtbyroadtoALVA1Rfrom CastleDonnington,andhassincebeenrestoredto Pristinecondition.TheoriginalGipsyenginehasbeen replacedbyanex-Chipmunk145b.h.pMajor10-2, drivingaFairey-Reesmetalpropeller.Allthefabric hasbeenrenewed,andtheaircraftre-paintedtoits originalcolourschemeofdarkblue,withpaleblue letteringandflashes,outlinedinyellow.Equipment includes24v.starter.generator,radioandenginedrivenvacuumpump.

TheLeoparddiffersfrommanyvintageaeroplanes insofarasbesidesbeingathingofbeauty,which createsgreatinterestwhereveritgoes,itisalsoa thoroughlypracticalmachine,withaworthwhileperformance,evenbytoday'sstandardsThispointis illustratedbythefactthatMr.StuartFilhol,the ownerofLeopardMothG-ACMAmakesregular

businesstripstoIrelandfromCoventry.

Mr.J.J.Parkes,adirectorofAlvair,carriedoutthe C.ofA.testflightandrecordedaninitialrateofclimb of800ft.perminute,andatopspeedof130m.p.h.He regardstheperformanceandhandlingassatisfactory. Heshouldknow!Beforethewarhewasmanaging directoratDe-Havillands,andtest-flew'CLLand 'CMNontheleftofthepicture,whichheowns,when theylefttheD.H.productionlines40yearsago.

Itisrathersad,buttrue,thattherearefewfirms mdaythatareinterestedinoverhauling'rag-bombers' (astheyareknowninthetrade).Sparesaredifficultto obtain,andfrequentlymustbemadebyhand.This makesanoverhaulanexpensiveandtime-consuming operation.AsoneofDennisHancock'senthusiastic teamatAlvair,Ispentseveralhappymonthson 'CLL'sC.ofA.overhaul.andP.F.A-erswillunderstandthedeepsatisfactionofseeingtheresultsof one'slabourstakingtheair.

Alltoooften,historicaircraftarebeingscrapped, s0nplybecausetheC.ofA.costsarenotcommercially viable.ThisisafieldinwhichP.F.A.membersarein astrongpositiontopreservesomeofourolderaeroplanes.Intermsofmoneyandeffort,ifissometimes bettertoobtainandrebuildonoldaeroplanethanto startbuildinganewone.

RYANCHECKRIDE

RecentlyIwasfortunatetobepresentforarare event,anewowner'scheckrideandfirstsoloinhis RyanPT-22,andasthischapisarecentarrivalhere, andhasnumerousfriends in thePFAandtheTiger Club,soIthoughtyoumightbeinterested.

Mr.PeterChickhasbeencomingtoourAirPark, inDelta,BritishColumbiaforaboutayear,andhas mademanyfriendsamongthelocalhomebuildersand vintageenthusiasts,andisnowtheeditorofourNewsletterHisnewaeroplanehascausedquiteastir amongthegroup,andmanyofushavetakenup Ryan-watchingasahobby.

TheaircraftisanAmericanmilitarytrainerfrom theforties,verypretty,metalfuselaae,withfabriccoveredwings.Theengineisadarlingfivecylinder radialmanufacturedbyoneKANNER,puttingout about160HP.Sheisfullyacrobaticandagood teacher,asmishandlingincertaindelicatemanoeuvrescancausehertosnap suchashauling backwhenslowonfinal.Tofindyourselfinvertedat 100feetonfinalcanleadtopalpitations.

There'safinecollectionofflyingwiresand(pardon) strutstogiveonethefeelingofbeinginarealaeroplane,andtheopencockpitmakesitlegitimateto wearhelmetandgoggles...withatrailingscarf.We areallamitejealous.Cruisespeedisabout105mph, andshestallsatabout65.Theventilationissuperband theenginejustlopesalongatabout1600rpmgoing

'chuff-chuff-chuffandwhenyouopenthethrottleto climb,shejustgoes'CHUFF-CHUFF-CHUFF'at apparentlythesamespeed.

Entherain,watertendstorundowntheforehead afterbeatingatattooonyourhelmet,butthewhole atmosphereisofgenialsatisfaction,andthecockpit areaisdevoidofwind.

Peterhadabsolutelynoproblemswithhissolo,as thepicturesattest,butthisbabycanfloatwhenalittle fast,andthebrakestendtobemerelysomewhereto putone'sfeet.Afterthegreatevent,hestoodmeanice cupoftea,andinvitedmealongashisfirstpassenger. Wesetoff to attendanoysterdiggingfly-inupthe coast,butwereforcedbackbymiserableweatherafter pokingalongforfiftyoddmilesatthefootofthe RockyMountains.Weencountered'float'onour return,andasapassenger,myvisionofusgrubbing aroundinthedikewasrathervivid,butPetercooly steeredussidewaysintothegrass,anoldTigertrick.

Shouldanyofyoubeoutthisway,nearVancouver. BC,forgoodnesssakeaivemeacall,andwe'llarrange foraguidedtoursomehow.DeltaAirParkisoneof themostactiveSportFlyingfieldsinNorthAmerica, andtheplaceisbustlingeveningsandweekendswith allkindsofultra-lights,antiques,vintageandexmilitaryflyingmachines.WehavealovelyClubhouse, hangarandworkshop,withasnackbarrunbythe airfieldowner'swife..it'sagreatplace.

FIND AND DELIVEU..

BehindahangarinGermanywasfoundaTaylorcraft'D',witharathertiredengine,butallrestorable. Nearbywasanotherone.Theywereboughtformodest sumsandcartedofftoDenmarkbyroadandrailby Dr.MagnusPedersenandMr.JensToft,afarm machinerydealer.Botharethedrivingforcebehind theKZandVeteranAircraftClubofDenmark, specialisinginthepreservationofhistorictypes.

Myinstructionsweretofindsuitableenginesatthe Britishendoftheoperationandtoprobethemilitary historyoftheaircraft.Oneprovedtohaveservedin Franceduringthe1944/5invasion,buttheotherremainedintheU.K.asatrainer.Bothwereoccasionally brokenandmadegoodagainbyTaylorcraftat LeicesterandwearegratefultotheAirHistoric Branch,Min.ofDefence,fortheirverykindassistance.WefinallylocatedtheveryfirstAutocrat,a conversion,alsoinGermany.

RumourledmetoanenginenearBrighton,where amanwasrebuildinganAusterinhisgarage.Another camefromapartyinEssex,similarlyplaced,after muchferretingroundforinformation.TheCirrus MinorjustgoesintothebackofaVolkswagen Beetle,aftermuchshoe-horningandgrimlanguage. OnewasdispatchedwithaDanishbusinessman visitingtheU.K.andIsetforthwiththeother,stillin theBeetle,alongwithstudentAndrewOliver,who,at 14,couldalreadyflyaChipmunkwithoutattracting adverseattention.

Itis18yearssinceIlastflewa'D'andmademy firstsoloinoneataveryearlyage,hencethebreed seemedtohaveshrunkinthattime.However,thisone flewbeautifullyanditsDanishCofAwassoon assuredtoeveryone'sdelight.Ithensampledasuperb ex-LufthansaChipmunk,boughtbyanaerobatic enthusiastandArhusrevolvedmanytimesaroundus beforewerepairedtothehomeofMr.BertelKring, ownerofabiglaundryandkeenpilot,formuch Danishhospitality.

OurKZ,generallyresemblinganAuster,wasone flownhomefromMalayabyMr.S.Baillie-Reynolds, afternearly20yearsusethere.Fittedwithfull-span slatsandcombinedflap/ailerons,itcanbelanded easilyonthefiguresatthethresholdofarunwaymuch likeaStorchandthisexamplewaslovinglycaredfor byJensToft.

AndyadaptedtoiteasilyandsinceDenmarkhas muchcoastline,withmanyislandsandinlets,much map-readingcouldhelefttohimalso,soIhadvery littleworktodointheair.WithDr.Pedersen,we wereofftoSvendborgnextdaytomeetmorefriends andtoseethespectacularKZ8,ofwhichtheonly otherexampleisflowninEnglandbyMr.Bob Mitchell,atairshowsandcompetitions.

AtSvendborgstoodaKZIIT,anowveryrareopen two-seatmilitarytrainer,notunlikeaGipsy-powered MothMinor,roughlyequivalenttotheChipmunk. Itsownerwaskeenformyopinionofit,whichwas

AfteraseacrossingfromHarwichtoEsbjerg,of whichthelesssaidthebetter,westayedongoodsolid groundwithmemberMr.KurtLauridsen,whohad, amongotherthings,alemonadefactoryandanAiredale,whichwefetchedforhimfromCofA,toa pleasantglidingsite,whereitprovidedthemotive power.IgotaverycoldlaunchinanobscureEast Germansailplane,whileAndysharedthenice,warm Airedaleupfront.

DivertedatStauningAirport,whereDr.Pedersen's Taylorcrafttestflightplans(forCofA)werereaching anadvancedstage,westayed,minusmostofour luggage,whichspentthenextfewdaysgettingsenton, mypyjamasnotmakingituntilthelastday!

WebecameKZ7pilots(high-wingSTOLaircraft), rushingofftothenorthtoseeaboutaradioatThisted, whereIwasaskedtoflyaveryattractiveex-German TigerMothwhichaerobatedwellanddeterminedthe localstolookforanotherone.Theykindlyaskedme howlong1couldstaytoteachthemtoflyit,butwe hadtotakeoveraKZ3(juniorKZ7)andappearnext morningatArhustomeetour'T'Craft,nowrebuilt asnewbymemberMr.VannStevnhoved,andwearing Britishwartimecamouflagewithroundels,etc.,areal masterpiece.

ratherrash,aswehadnevermetbefore,andIasked usefulquestions,ashetalkedaboutflyingcharacteristics.Ithadaverywellplannedlayoutontheinside andInoticedtheownerstillhadn'tgotin,thoughby thistimewehadgottheenginerunning.Heconfidently saidhewouldn'tbemuchhelptomeastherewereno controlsinthefront,soImightaswellflyittosortit out,takingAndyifIwantedto.Nofrontseatwas everoccupiedmorequickly,asIrecoveredfromthe surprise!TheIITwentlikeadream,itspointed, slottedwingsgivingaveryusefulstall/spinfortraining andacrispresponseinalldirections,withauseful turnofspeed.Thestandard'conversiontotype' routineproveditsuperiortotheChipmunk,inmy humbleopinion,andifonewereeverforsale,it wouldn'tbeforlong!

Afterwards,theowner,whomusthavecommendablefaithinBritishinstructors,whiskedmealong somepowerlinesinaBell47andmentionedhe sweepsfactorychimneyswithitaswell,besidessome ratherboringcropspraying.Ibelievehim!We swoopeddowntotheKZ'smicroscopicprivateairstrip,whereonlytheveryskilledknowhowtoextract itandenjoyedsomemoreoftheDanishwelcomeat thefarm.

AlikeStapptalksaboutquiteafewdifferentKZdesignsinhisarticleandtheEditorsthoughtmembersmightnot knowsonicofthem.SohereisareproductionofthehackoftheKZClubsChristmasCaulenvelopeoflastyearwhich showsthecompleterangeofKZdesigns.

Nextday,wereturnedJens'aeroplaneandwereto helpferryhisfamilytoCopenhagen,toseethezoo, bywayoftheirsecondfarm,onthelovelymid-way islandofEndelave.Thisispureunspoiltcountry, unchangedinperhaps50years.WeflewanAutocrat, good,solidtransportforkidsanddogsonthis occasion.Drivinga1929Model'A'Ford,wewent shoppingatTHEshop,bytheminiatureharbourand laterflewroundthetinyislandatzerofeetalongthe coast,lookingforwilddeer.Wecalledintoseea farmer,asmostaviatorstherelandquitecasuallyin fieldsforachat.

VariousotheraircraftturnedupandMrs.Toft valiantlysuppliedcoffeealmostwithoutrespite,tosay nothingoffoodforahungryfamily.Theboysplayed onthebeachanddrovetheirjeepaboutthefarm, sometimeshelpingwithplantingandtractoring.The weatherremainedfaultless.

AnearlystartinthemorningbroughtustoSk8vlunde,nearCopenhagen,whichwaseasilyreached fromtherebytrain.AndyandI,however,weredestined forSweden,alongwithamilitarypilot,inaborrowed KZ7,asitwasrumouredthatarealHavardwaskept justacrossthestraits,bypigfarmerMr.Hasse Hansson.Infact,healsohadaspareoneinthebarn, alongwithenoughsparestoequipafairsizedF.T.S., andweroaredaroundtheskyinhisbeautifulolivegreenmonster.Thatwarrantsawholechapterto itself,suchwerethelessonsIlearntaboutflying.Poor Andyisstillwaitingforaturn,butisknowntohave developedanewinterestinsavingup!

Wejustmadeitbacktotheislandbeforenightfall, theAusterdevelopinganinfuriatingoilleak,which hadtobecured.Wewatchedtheoilpressureasnever beforeandweregladofourlife-jackets.

ArmedwithanotherKZ3,wewereoffnextdayto thefarNorthofDenmark,tovisitMr.Torkild Balslev,aprofessionalphotographerwho,withhis wife,writesdelightfulchildren'sbooks,featuringtheir littledaughterandherdog,thepicturesbeing practicallyatravelogueofScandinaviaandnumerous KZswithskison.Hisdramaticski-run,laughingly calledanairstrip,wasfortunatelynottoomuch troubleforourKZ,andweweremetbyGonzales,

possiblythemostexperiencedSpanielintheworldin airbornesubjects.

TorkildarrivedbyHelioCourierawhilelater,after aday'sglidertowing,and,askinguswhatwewould likefortea,flewusdowntoavillagestoretodothe shopping.TheHeliorosenear-verticallyataround 20m.p.h.,withenormousslatshangingforwardand italsoprovedtohavequiteagoodhigherspeed capability.

Landinginasmallpaddock,weshoppedforingredientstomakeupsomethingwehadneverheardof beforeandflewhomewithanintermediatelandingon thebeach.

Torkildusuallyflieswithamotorscooteraboard, whichenableshimtoreachhisCopenhagenoffice withoutdifficultyandequippedtheHeliowithstereocassettemusicasanaddedrelaxation.

Westayedonenight,thenbacktoDr.Pedersen'sto unloadthenearly-forgottenengine,beforedrivingto CopenhagentostaywithformerTigerMothowner, Mr.JanPeschcke-Keedtandhiswife,Nina.Thereal pleasureinDenmarkliesinDanishhouses,people, eating,and,toarespectableextent,drinking.We neededaday'srestbythistimeandsettledforalook aroundCopenhagen,withavisittotheAirportat Kastrupalmostobligatory.IftherewasaDanish aeroplaneAndydidn'tsee,theymusthavehiddenit fromhim.

Alltoosoonourstaywasoverand,onthelastday, whilstlookingforavantagepointnearaninteresting militaryairfield,theBeetlebrokedown,withanobscureelectricalfault.OnlytheexpertiseofMessrs. Falck,nearestthingtotheAA,producedaresponse andwescrambledbreathlesslyaboardtheferryat Esbjerg,meclutchingmypyjamaswhichIeventually caughtupwithnearthelemonadefactory.

Happily,thecrossinghomewassmoothand altogetherMessrs.Kodakdidwelloutofourtrip. BackintheU.K.wearequietlylookingforanother engine.ThesecondT-Craftisnearingcompletionand plansarebeingmadefortheoriginalAutocrat.

WewonderifanyonehasaCirrusorperhaps Geminiwreckage,willingtodivide,inanycaseagood historichomeisguaranteed!

APiperJ3aircraftrecentlyinspectedwasseverely corrodedinthelowerlongeronsofthetailframe.

TheobjectofthisNoticeistoimpressuponthose concernedthenecessitytoensurebythoroughinspectionthatthesteelstructureofthefuselageissound aftersomanyyearssinceconstruction.

MostJ3aircraftnowinservicewerebuiltinthe 1940'sorearlier.Thatisnottosaythatthestructure isnotsoundbutonlybythoroughinspectioncanyou determinethestateofthestructureandhavepeaceof mind.

PiperJ3aircraftandthoseofsimilarconstruction havecertainlocationswhichareveryvulnerabletothe effectsofmoistureandthetailframesandthelower longeronsinthecockpitareaaretheworstlocations. Badcorrosionhasalsobeenfoundonthetailplane supporttube.

Externalrustwhenfoundisaknownquantityand theremedyisobvious—eliminateand/orrepairand replacetheaffectedtubes.

Internalrustisadifferentkettleoffish.Inthe initialstagesitisdifficulttodetect.Removefabric coveringfromthestructureandlookforsmallrust colouredspotsorpimplesintheprotectivefinish.If thesymptomsarepresenttrypenetratingthemetal withasharpspikedtool.Ifthetoolpenetratesyou haveproblemsandtheaffectedstructuremustbecut

outandsoundmaterialinsertedinaccordancewith Piper'sapprovedrepairschemesorrepairprocedures inFAAPublicationAC43.13.I.AircraftInspection andRepair.Thisisanexcellentbookwithmuch usefulinformationfortheamateurconstructor ownersandinspectorsandnoP.F.A.memberinvolvedinbuilding,flyingorinspectingshouldbe withoutit.

Donotattempttocutoutfaultystructurewithout theadviceandsupervisionofaninspectorexperienced intubularmetalairframestructure.Weldingof approvedrepairschemesmustbedonebyaCAA Approvedwelderwiththeappropriate,endorsement onhiscardofauthoritywhichmustbecurrent.

TitchZK-DFKwasbuiltbyRobbieRobsonwhose wifeMaeImetonabustoOshkoshlastyear.Itissad torelatethatRobbiewaskilledflyingtheTitchlast Decemberaftercompletingover134flyinghoursinit. Hehadjusttakenoffandclimbedto250feetwhenon commencingaturnhewasstruckbyagustofwindand spunofftheturnAlthoughmanagingtopartiallyrecoverheranoutofair.

Robbiewasatthetimeofhisdeathbuildinga Minicabandhadpreviouslybuilt9boats:hewasthe typeofpersonthattheworld-widehomebuilding movementwillsadlymiss.Thisarticleisdedicatedto hismemory.

TheTaylorTitch,designedbythelateJohnTaylor, wasawardedsecondprizeinamidgetracerdesign competitionorganisedintheU.K.in1964.Firstflown in1967,theTitchisacomparativenewcomertothe homebuildingscenebutisalreadybecomingpopular withamateurconstructorsinthiscountry,inspiteof thefatalcrashoftheprototypeinthehandsofthe designer.

TheexampleIflewforthisevaluationispowered withaRevmasterengine,a65hpconversionofthe redoubtableVolkswagenunit,butmaybefittedwith enginesrangingfrom40to95horsepower.

EnteringthecockpitoftheTitchrequiresacertain amountofmanoeuvringbutoncein,theseatingis comfortable,ifrathersnug.AsintheearlierTaylor Monoplanes,yousitverylowinthefuselageandthe horizondirectlyaheadisobscuredbytheseemingly longnose.Visibilityisotherwiseverygood.

Mostofthecontrolsareconvenientandeasytouse, buttheflapleverinthisparticularaircraftwassituated sothatmyrightelbowrestedbetweentheleverand cockpitwall,apositionthatbecameinconvenientat timesinthenarrowconfines.Operationoftheflaps entailedquicklychanginghandsonthestickandthen reachingacrosswiththelefthandtooperatethelever, andseveralpilotsreportedthattheyhadbeenunable tousethefullrangeofflapsettings.Ianisurehowever,

thatthisissomethingthatcouldberectifiedwithout toomuchdifficulty,particularlyonaircraftthathave notyetbeencompleted.

Groundhandlingisquitestraightforward,although itisnecessarytoS-turnconstantlytoseearoundthe nosewhiletaxying(shadesoftheTiger!!).Ialso gainedtheimpressionthattheTitchisjustalittlelight inthetailandthiswasconfirmedlaterwhenIlanded inlongishgrassandconsiderablebackpressurewas requiredonthesticktokeepthetaillowduringrollout,somethingthatisrarelynecessaryintheJTI,so wouldcautionagainstharshuseofthebrakeswhile taxi-ing.

Therudderbecomeseffectivealmostimmediately onopeningthethrottleandtheaircraftissurprisingly easytokeepstraightduringbothtake-offandclimbout,withlittlerudderpressurerequiredtocounterany yaw.Afteramoderategroundruntheaircraftcanbe flownoffandclimbedawayatagoodhealthyrate.

Duringtheclimb-outitquicklybecomesobvious thatthecontrolsarelightandresponsiveallround, givingtheaircraftaverypleasantfeel.Itisnecessary toS-turnslightlyduringastraight-aheadclimbasthe nosestillblocksoutthehorizonaheadanditwouldbe easytomissseeingothertrafficifitwasdeadinfront.

Oncelevelledoutincruisethe'lonenose'isno longerevidentandforwardvisibilityisverygood. Manylightaircrafthavelightandresponsiverudders andelevatorsbuttendtohaverather'soggy'ailerons, butalltheflightcontrolsontheTitcharelightand powerfulandareverywellharmonisedwithlittleor notendencytobecomeheavyathighspeeds.

Noiselevelisatriflehighalthoughnotuncomfortablyso,andcertainlynotashighasIhadexpected consideringthatthisaircrafthadfairlyshortexhaust stubs.Stabilityappearednormalforalow-winger aircraft.

Flapsupstallsarefairlystraightforwardwiththe nosedroppingquicklyafteracleanbreakawayprecededbythebriefestofwarningbuffetsandapeculiar shortwhistle,presumablytheairflowbreakingaway fromthecanopy.ThefirstfullflapstallIcarriedout resultedintheleftwingdroppingfairlysharplyatthe stall,howeverduringsubsequentstallsIfoundthatifI kepttheballoftheTurnandSlipindicatorcentred. neitherwingdroppedandtheaircraftsimplypitched nosedownwithwingslevelatthestallsaftera noticeablylongerperiodofpre-stallbuffetingthanwas evidentduringtheflaps-upstalls.Recoveryisalmost instantwhenbackpressureonthestickisreleased, andevenwhenawing-dropoccurredrecoverywas immediateonapplicationofoppositerudderand forwardstick.

Priortoastallinasteepturntheaircraftbeginsto buffetsufficientlyearlytogiveadequatewarningof theimpendingstall.Whenactuallystalled,theinside wingbeginstotuckunderasthoughtheaircraftis goingtoflick,butthentheaircraftslowlyreturns itselftosomewhereneartheoriginalbankangleifthe aircraftisheldintothestalledattitude,andthen continuesintheturnwhileshudderingandbuffeting.

IstalledtheTitchinsteepturnsbothwaysanumber oftimesandwaspleasedtonotethattheaircraftnever onceactuallyflickedrightunder.

Whileonthesubjectofsteepturns,onanumberof occasionsIturnedtheTitchthrough360degreesin onedirectionandthenrolleditstraightintoasteep turnintheoppositedirection,andeachtimeIdidthis theTitchwouldreefitselfintothenewturnwithout anyextraapplicationofbackstickonmypart,the positiveGloadingbeinghigherthanintheoriginal turnimmediatelybeforethereversalofdirection.

Lowspeedhandlingisverygoodandaccurate approachestolandcanbemadewithlittledifficulty. ThelandingsthatIdidduringtheevaluationflight wereallwheellandingsasrecommended,butIfeel thatthree-pointlandingswouldnotbedifficultfor anyonewhohadbecomefamiliarwiththeaircraft.

IfoundtheTaylorTitchtobeadelightfullittle aeroplanetoflywithitshighrateofroll,sprightly performanceanditslackofadverseyaw,andIhope thatitwilleventuallybeapprovedforaerobaticsasit wasratherfrustratingtohavetorefrainfromaerobatinganaircraftthatissomanoeuvrable.Although designedmainlyasamidgetracer.theTitchisnota difficultmachinetoflyanditisnotbeyondtheability oftheaverageprivatepilot.

InanaircraftofthissmallsizeIwouldhave expectedtoencountermoreevidenceoftorquefrom a65hpengine,butinactualfactdirectionalcontrolis aseasyasin.say,aTurbulent.Whileitmaydropa wingatthestall,itisbynomeansaviolentdropand isnoworsethanmanyotheraircraft,beingeasily caughtwiththeappropriaterecoveryaction.
