EDITORIAL

Theaircraftandvisitorshaveall returned,thetentsarealldismantled,theairfieldistidyand Sywellhasreturnedtoitsnormal levelofactivity.

Ithasalmostbecomeahabitthat eachSywellisbetterthanthelast andthisyearwasmostcertainlythe biggestandbestattendedyet,truly livinguptoitsreputationofthe biagestrallyinEurope.Nodoubt theexcellentweatherhelpedbutthe spiritoftheweekendwaswell expressedbyaletterreceivedat PFAHeadquarterswhichsaid 'Therewasanintangiblesoinething whichgavethatpleasantatmospherewhichisablendofgoodwill andenthusiasmwhichmadeavery happyweekendforvisitors.'WithoutdoubtSywell75willberememberedasa"VintageYear".For thosewhowerenotabletobeat Sywellover450differentaircraft visitedtheairfieldbySundayevening.Inthistotaltherewere70 homebuilts.48vintage.8warbirds, 4gyrosand3glidersplusonehotairballoon,whichpeacefullyascendedintotheairat6.00a.m.on Sundaymorning.Duringtheevent thevisitingaircraftamassedsome 4,000plusmovements.

Sywell'75wasequallynotablefor thevisitorsfromsuchdistantplaces asAustralia,Sweden,Switzerland andJapanwhethertheycameby jet,homebuiltorevenbicycle.

Praisemustalsogotothemany un-namedmemberswhodothe retdworkbehindSywellbothin organisingtheeventandperhaps

evenmoreimportantdoallthetidyingupaftertheevents,indeedthe moststalwarthelpersaresurethat themostnotableeventofSywellis thelunchforallthehelperswhichis heldonthefollowingMondayto quenchthethirstandrestthebacks ofallthehardworkerswhostay behind.

Onalesshappynote,the Treasurerhadtoreportthatinflationhadcaughtupwithusand thepresentsubscriptionwouldno longercovertherunningofour Association.Hisproposaltoincreasethesubscriptionsto£7.50 fromJanuary1976metwithunanimousapprovalattheA.G.M.which thisyearreceivedarecordattendanceofover300members.

Bythetimethisisinprintthe firstmeetingforSywell'76willhave beenheld—itisjustawayoflifeto manywhodeserveallourthanks.

Itiswithdeepregretthatwe havetorecordthedeathofMrs.

G.J.C.Paul,wifeofourPresident,AirCommodoreG.J.C. Paul,afterashortillness.

Fortyyearsagothesailinecrowdwereeithervery richorquiteimpecunious.Theveryrichwereamixed lotbutthoseattheotherendofthescalewere,without exception,worthwhilepeople

TheydidupoldboatsandmaintainedLhemthemselves.Veryoftentheybuilttheirownboats,andthere werenokitstosavethemtheheavywork.Theyknewa greatdealaboutwindandweatherandthewayofa shipinthesea.Andwhentheywenttoseatheywent withtheireyesopenanddidnotexpectanyoneelseto riskhisnecktogetthemoutoftrouble.Theysought thequietanchorageandthecrecksidepubandapipe andafewpintsingoodcompanywhentheycamein fromthesea.

Sadlythathasallchanged.Everyanchorageis packedsolidwithplasticcontainersthattheirowners fondlyrefertoasyachts.Thenightsaremadehideous withhalliardsslattingontinmasts,andtaperecorders andtransistorsatmaximumvolumetobeheardover theclatterofbatterychargingengines.Thecreekside pubhasbecomeachromiumplateddivecomplete withjuke-boxandfruitmachinesandthesensible fishermenareworkineaprofitableIMeinsalvage.

Andthepeople—ohdear!

Ihavediscoveredtomydelightthatourkindof flyingisinthesamestatethatsailingwasfortyyears ago,andexceptforthejargon,thepeoplearethesame astheoldsailorsTusedtoknowandwhosecompany Irelished.

Whentheystartproducingplasticaeroplanekitsfor homeassemblyhangupmygogglesforgood.

DavidSchofieldhadofferedtofabricatemyundercarriageformeandwhenheranguptosaythatitwas readywemadeasortieintothewildsofNorthern Wiltshiretocollectit.

Davidandhischarmingwifewelcomeduswithtea andthenDavidwhiskedmeofftohislocalairfield wherewefoundhisglidingclubinfullflightandRay Wales,frommyownstrut,flyingthetue.

DavidtookmeforacoupleoflaunchesinaSleicher KI3andonthesecondlaunchwefoundsomeliftand managedtostayupforIdminutes.Itwasthefirst glidingIhaddonesince1937andthoughitfeltstrange atfirstwithoutanengineinfrontitdidnotseemto havechangedmuchin37years.

WhenRaycamedownforabreatherIwentupin thePiperCubforhalfanhourofpurejoy.Afteryears ofnothingbutthechummylittleCessna150'sIhad almostforgottenthepleasureandthefeelingof commandthatcomesfrombeingabletolookover bothsidesoftheaeroplane,andtoflyholdingastick inone'shandinsteadofawheel.

Imaybewrongbutitseemstomethatoneonly needsawheelifitisnecessarytousebothhandsand exertconsiderablestrengthtoflytheaeroplane,asin aWellingtonwhenforsomereasonitgetsoutoftrim, forexample.Wherethisisnotrequiredastickgives farbetterandmoresensitivecontrol.

BackatDavid'splace,wemountedhisV.P.onits undercarriageandrolleditoutfromhisoldgarage whereithadbeenborntotheassemblyhangar—his newgarage.

Onthewaywehungthestabilatoronthesternpost, putthepetroltankandfairinginplaceandDavid climbedintotryitforsize.

Whatwithpausesforadrnirationandhunting aroundforbitsandpiecesitwastenp.m.beforewe finallyleft,loadedwithaeronauticalgoodiesand muchthewiserforthebenefitofDavid'sexperience

andadvice.

BackathomeIstowedmytreasuresawayagainst thedaywhentheywouldbeneededandgotonwith thestabilator.Neverhavingbeenshipmateswitha fullyflyingempenagebeforethiswasanewwordinmy vocabulary.Unlikemostconventionalaircraftthe V.P.Ihasnofixedtailsurfaces—nofinortailplane. Insteadithasapartlybalancedrudderandelevator. Bothhaveanti-servoLabswhichworkautomatically toreturnthemtothecentralpositionandinaddition theelevator,orstabilator,ismassbalancedwithabout sevenlbs.oflead.

Thehollowboxsparofthestabilatorpresentedno realproblems.AllgluingwasdonewithLheassembly clampedfirmlyLothejigtableoverasheetofMelinex topreventanyriskofstickingitpermanentlytothe tabletop.Beforeclosingitupmyinspectorhada lookinsideandapprovedofwhathesaw.

Iwasworriedaboutkeepingeverythingstraightin thefinalassemblyonaccountofthedoublecurvature oftheaerofoil,butintheeventitturnedouteasy enough.Ifittedtheleadingedgestemporarilyinplace andthenfittedandgluedthetrailingedgeswiththe wholetrailinaedgeclampeddowntothetable.This cockedtheleadingedgeupintheair,butatleastit wasfirmlyanchored.Ithenlineduptheleadingedges withastringlinebetweenpinsonthecentrelinesofthe extremeribswhoseheightsabovethetabletophad beencheckedasequal.Thisseemedtoworkasthere isnoperceptibletwistinthefinishedjob.

Thetrimmingtabreallyhadmestumped.Itseemed oneneededfourhandsandfingerstwenty-oneinches lonetoholdeverythinginplacefordrillingandrivettine.SointheendItookallmybitsandpiecestoa localaircraftfirmwholaughedindulgentlyandaareed todothebendingandassemblyforme.

Ihadbeenalittleworriedbyotherpeople'sdescriptionsoffittingtheleadineedgeplywithelaborate systemsofrubberbandsandwedges.Evansdismisses theoperationwithoutcommentsoIassumedthathe musthavenailedhisdownwithbrassbrads.

WhenIcametofeatherofTtheleadingedgethe brassnailheadssandedawayaseasilyastheply.

Fwasjustfinishingoffthestabilatorwhenthe ruddertubearrived.Ihadbeenworriedforsometime aboutgettingthisgluedupabsolutelytrueandwithouttwistsinceIcouldthinkofnowayofmakinga jigforit.HoweverbyfollowingEvans'instructionsto theletteritwenttogethereasilyenough—though stillcan'tthinkwhy.

TheonlysnagIencounteredwaswhenIcameto assembletherudderinthefuselage.Ifoundtherejust wasnotclearancetogettherudderhornin,though whenIcheckediffoundthateverythinghadbeenbuilt exactlytothefigureddimensions.Howeverbyinvertingthehornfitting—andthereisnoreasonwhyit shouldnotbesoinverted—everythingslippedeasily intoplace.tlnnkthatoneofthefigureddimensions musthavebeenchangedinthecourseofdevelopment andtheworkingdrawingsnotbroughtuptodate.This isnotunusualinengineeringpractice.

WiththeempenagestructurallycompleteIdragged theairframeoutofthegarageandtrieditallon.Much tomydelighteverythingfittedfirsttimewithoutthe useofeitherbodgersorbadlanguage.Ispentalong timeadmiringit,photographingitanddrinkingits health.

BackinthegarageFtookeverythingapartagainfor internalvarnishing.Mike,myinspector,likestoget everythingcoveredwithaprotectivecoatassoonas possible.ForthatreasonIhadalreadypaintedthe fuselageuptothepenultimatecoatoffinalcolour. hadevengonetothelengthofpaintingonmyPEA constructionnumber-7,007—.Witha au mberlike thatwhowouldn't,andatleastitgivesthelittleaeroplaneanidentity.

Ifmyassumptionsonlandingloadsarecorrectthe axleshavetobemachinedoutofmedium(22ton minmum)hightensilesteel,towithstandthebending momentatthechangeofsectionfrom,3,:"diameterto ,;-"diameter.

AfriendlyStrutmemberlentmeascrapCessna axleforcheckingpurposesandtogetideasfrontand fwasinterestedtodiscoverthatalthoughthispattern wasobsolete,havingbeenovertakenbydevelopment design,itdidnotaccordcompletelywiththeone shownonEvans'drawings,whichmustbeaneven earlierpattern.Soitseemsprobablethatallbuilders intheU.K.willbefacedwithproducingtheirown modificationssofarastheaxlesareconcerned.

Theyearrollsroundandthetimehadcomeforthe annualpilgrimagetoSywell.So,loadedwithcameras, wemotoredNorth.

Onlyayearbefore,007consistedofjusttwobulkheadsandapileofspruce.blow,lesswings,sheis nearlyreadyforroll-out.Nextyear,perhaps,shewill arriveatSywellonherowntwowings.

Sywellseemstogetbettereveryyear.Hourbyhour, moreandmorebeautifulaircraftappearandpark themselvestobecomethefocusofhundredsofexpert critics.

TherewasthelittleStarlet,lookingabitlikea Lysander'scolt:theE.A.A.Biplane;TheLutonMinor whichmustsurelybethemostbeautifuloneeverbuilt: theFlyingFlea,presumablynolongeraerodynamicallysuspect:leaniesTeenyfromSwitzerlandand—was thataSprite?Ithoughtitwas,butcouldnotconfirm it.

Theseandalotofothersallbuilttoastandardthat

Itwasatthisstagethatanewissueof PopularFlying arrivedandthefirstthingIsawonopeningitwasan articleonfuelflow.TomyhorrorIdiscoveredthat accordingtotheauthoritativewriterIneededaminimumflowof12.8gallonsperhourandnotthefigureof 5.8e.p.h.towhichIhadbeenworking.

AtthefirstopportunityFconsultedMikewho agreedthatthiswascorrect.FortunatelyIhadnot finallyinstalledmyborepetrolcockwhichgavea flowatminimumheadof7g.p.h.,soFremoveditand drilleditoutto,3,-"bore.Thisnowgivesaflowof12.9 g.p.h.sohonourissatisliect—just.

DavidhadtoldmeofafirMcalledZipkartswho makeverygoodwheelstotake600x6tyresbut,inhis experience,hadprovedtobeindifferentcorrespondents.Soonahighsummer'sdayofdrivingrainI motoreduptoHoddeston.Hcrts,insearchofwheels formyundercarriage.Itwasadrearyandtedious PopularHying,September-October,1975

Iwouldhavethoughtimpossibleforanyamateur, andwouldcertainlynotbeeconomicalforacommercialbuildertoattempt.

Asonewho,bynow,shouldknowalittleabout buildingaeroplanesIcannotbegintoimaginehowit isdone.Howdoesanamateurdevelopthesesortof skillsor,indeed,findthetimeforsuchperfection?

Amongtheveteranaircraftitwasdelightfultosee abeautifullyrestoredD.H.60Moth,thetypeonwhich Ilearnttofly,lookingasgoodasonthcdayitleft StagLane.Thereissomethingremarkablyattractive aboutthatuprightengineandthesquare,unstaggered, wirigs.

Themindbogglesattheamountofworkthatmust havegoneintothatresurrection.Oneoftheminor frustrationsofthebuilderorrestorer'sexistenceisthe factthatmostoftheevidenceofthehundredsofhours oflovinglabourishiddenundertheglossyfinishso

thatonlytheeyeoftheinitiatedcantrulyappreciatethe endproduct.

I wasbeginningtogetthoroughlydepressedand concludingthatinthefaceofsuchcompetition,I couldnotpossiblybring007toSywell,whenacross thepaddockIsawalittlesportscardrivingalong towingatrailerthatcarriedsomethingthatlooked remarkablyfamilar.

ItwasindeedaV.P.IallfoldedupinwhatEvans describesasitstowingconfiguration.

Bymyreckoningittooktheowneronehouranda halftorigitreadytofly.Thiswassomething I had wantedtoseedonehutneverexpectedtoseeatSywell.

FortheV.P.builderthisparticularaircraft,BAPP, anditsinfinitelypatientandcourteousownerwerea mostvaluablesourceofinspirationandknow-how. Hemusthavethoughtmeanunconscionablenuisance withmycamerasandmyquestions,buthenever showedit.Heevenwentoffandgothisfileofrelease

notestoansweroneofmyqueries—andallinthe middleofrigginghisaeroplane.

Hismodificationtotheundercarriagebracing accordedwithmyownideasandwasalmostexactly whatThadsketchedoutforsubmissiontomyinspector.

Evansassumesthateverybuilderhashisownswage blocksothattheendfittingstothebracingwirescan beswagedinplace.Failingthisyouhavetotakethe completeundercarriageassemblytothenearestrigger andtrusthimtogethisdimensionsdeadrightsince thereisnoprovisionforadjustment.

Iwasunhappyaboutthisandproposedtoputa pairofriggingscrewsintotheassemblywhichwould entaileyeboltsthroughtheupperpartoftheundercarriagelegs.ThiswasjustwhatBAPPhad,so I snappedhappilyawaywiththecamerainorderto provideacceptablesupportingevidencetomyinspector

Accordingtomycalculationsthegreatestloadone islikelytoputintothesebracingwiresisabout 1950lbsThiscallsforabreakingloadinthewireof about4000lbs.ataloadfactorof2,andturningto themanufacturerstablesonefindsthattheonly diameterwirethatwillmeetthisrequirementis I x19 stainlesssteel—indeedthereisonegradeof,17"wire withaminimumbreakingloadofonly1920lbs.,so onecouldbeintroubleifonepickedthewrongone.

Itfollowsthatalltheotherfittingsshouldbegood foratleastaton. I foundthatGibbsofWarsashmake stainlessriggingscrewsforyachtswithguaranteedsafe workingloads,soIboughtapairoftheseratedata toneach.Mikewasalittleworriedabouttheirweight butasitwasslightlyforwardofthecentreofgravity heletitpass.

Iamconstantlyamazedattheeverreadyand friendlyadviceandpracticalassistancethatisalways availablefrommyinspector,fellowstrutmembers andotherconstructors,oftentotalstrangers.Thefact thatsomanylittleaeroplanesgetbuiltatall,bears witnesstothisextraordinarystreamofgoodwill,since mostofthemwouldnevergetfinishedwithoutit.

Atleasthalfthefunofbuildinglittleaeroplanesis inthepeoplewecometomeet,thecompanywekeep.

OBITUARY CECILH.LATIMER-NEEDHAM

Oneofthelastsurvivingfigureheadsofthelightaviationscenebetweeuthetwowars,heledachequeredcareerandgained distinctioninmanysectorsofaviation.Asearlyas1924hebecameinvolvedinthedesignofaseriesoflightaircraft—theHalton AeroClubMayflyandMinus.

AnearlypioreerofglidinginEngland,hebecamefascinatedbytheflightofbirdsandspentmanyyearsanalysingtheweight, musclepowerandwing-loadingofdifferentspecies.Atonetime,hearrangedfordeadbirdstobesenttohimfromthezoofor measurement.TheAlbatrossglider,builtbyRFDinGuildfordin1930wasoneresult.

HeestablishedtheDunstableSailplaneCompany,wasappointedthefirstChairmanoftheTechnicalCommitteeoftheBritish GlidingAssociation,andadvisedonthedesignofbothpoweredandnon-poweredaircraft.In1935,Latimer-NeedhamlefttheR.A.F. formedhissecondcompany—LutonAircraft—attheBarton-in-the-Clay,Bedfordshire,andembarkedonthedesignandconstruction ofthelightaircraftincludingtheBuzzard,theMinorandtheMajor.Thefollowingyear,thecompanymovedtoGerrardsCross whiletheDunstablecompanyofferedkitsofpartsfor the Kestrelsailplane,anotherfromCHIN'sdrawingboard.

Concurrentwiththis,Latimer-NeedhambecameseniortechnicalofficertotheAirborneForcesExperimentalEstablishment, andlaterhebecamechiefengineertoFlightRefuellingwithSirAlanCobham.Helookpartintheearlyflightrefuellingtrialsincludingthenon-stopflightfromLondontoBermudain1947.

AmongthegrowingnumberofPiperCubsthatare registeredintheUnitedKingdomthereisonevery specialone.ItistheonlyremainingJ-2CubinexistenceonthissideortheAtlantic.andstrictlyspeaking itisnotaPiperbutaTaylorCubastheearlyconstructionnumbersuggeststhattheaircraftwasbtnit justbeforethePiperAircraftCorporationwasformed in1937.Onlyoneyearearlier,thecompletely redesignedJ-2CubwasofferedwithagreatlyimprovedContinentalengine.Thedevelopmentofa trulysuccessfullightplanehadbeenheldbackbythe lackofareliableandeconomicalpower-plant.The SzekelyandAeromarineenginesbeingusedwere extremelyroughinoperationandtheirexcessix•vibrationmadethemimpracticalinalightairframelike thatoftheCub.Althoughithadbeensteadily improvedsince1931.theContinentalA-40wasexpensiveandduringthefirstfewyearsofitsuseintheCub ithadpresentedaseriesofexasperatingdifficulties_ However,by1937thc"bugs-hadbeenironedout andmorethansixhundred.1-2Cubswereproduced, severalofwhichwereexportedtotheU.K.where theyenjoyedaratherlimitedsuccessamongstthe moresophisticated(butfarmoreexpensive)lightaircraftavailableatthetime.

ThishistoricaeroplaneisnowownedbyJohnand MonicaDowsonwhohavejustcompletedamajor overhauloftheaircraftandgivenitanewcolour schemeallyellowwithblacktrim.Registered G-AEXZ,thisoldCubhashadmanymodifications duringitsmodestflyinglifeoftwelvehundredhours andmostoftheworkwascarriedoutbyformer ownerMickLoyal.FirsttogowastheoldContinentalA-40engine.Thiswasreplacedbyalaterandmore reliableContinentalA-75powerplantrequirMga greatlymodifiedcowlingandexhaustsystem.Asthe fuelconsumptionofthenewenginewasnearlydouble thatoftheearlier37hp.modeltheexistingeight gallonfueltankwasfoundtoberatherlimitingand anauxiliaryfourgallontankwasbuiltintothefuselagebehindthecockpit,requiringfuelpumpstobe

fittedtotheenginetoprovidethenecessaryfuelflow. Withtheincreasedpoweranewpropellerwasneeded andabrakingsystemwasfittedtoassistaround ha!idling.

TheJ-2Cubisaverylightaeroplane,andwith doublethepoweranditsbroad35ft.wingspan, G-AEXZcanleapoffthegroundlikeascaldedcat. albeitalittlemoregracefully.MickLoyalandhis partnersusedtotakepartinairshowswiththisCub andaZatmkoenigG-ALUAdemonstratingthe extremelylowspeedhandlingcharacteristicsofboth aircraftandtheamazingshorttake-offperformance oftheJ-2.

JohnandMonicawillbekeepingtheirveteranCub atLeicesterEastwhichisonlyafewmilesawayfrom RearsbywherethelaterC.G.Taylor-designedaircraftwerebuiltunderlicenceintheU.K.asthe Austerseries.NicetothinkthuttheGrandadofthe wholetribeisaliveandwellandlivingatLeicester.

Theobjectiveinthedesignofa.pylonraceris simple,togetaroundashortcourseintheminimum time.Theoriesonhowtoachievethisendvary,some peoplefavouringsmallmanoeuvreableaircraftofbasic designandconstruction,whileothersprefermorecomplexandhopefully,moreefficientsemi-monocoque typesofmachine.

Thephasesoftheracetobeconsideredarethree; thestart,whenaccelerationisparamount;the straights,whenlevelspeedisimportant;andfinally, theturnswheretheminimumspeedlossisrequired. inadditiontofulfillingtheseconditionstheideal racershouldhaveexcellentvisibility,goodreservesof strength,wellharmonisedcontrolsandalsodocile stallingcharacteristics.

Factorscontributingtotheaircraft'sfinalrace speedarepower(thrust),profileandinduceddrag. Thethrustproducedbythepropellerdependsonthe aircraft'strueairspeed,thepowerdeliveredbythe engine,andtheefficiencyofthepropeller.Since propellerdesignandtheaircraftTASarenotentirely underourcontrol,enginepowerand,propellerchoice areallthatreallymatter.Thereisnoknownmethodof determininganalyticallytheproptousebecausethe variables(TAS,BHPv.RPM,courselength,prop efficiencyv.RPM)aretoonumerous.Trialanderror istherulehere,thoughonewouldnormallyapproach theidealfromanrpmthoughttobelowerthan required.Apropthatistoofinewillgivegoodaccelerationatthestartbutwillnotgivetopendperformance onthestraights.Thepropthatistoocoarsewillresult inarelativelysluggishtake-offandtheaircraftwill notevenapproachitsrealtopspeed,becuasethespeed lossintheturnsismorepronouncedatlowerspeeds. Testsonpropellersshouldbecarriedoutrounda standardsizedcourseastestsdonestraightandlevel willgiveanimpressionthatacoarserpropisneeded, duetothehigherspeedthatwillbereached.

Enginedevelopmentisasubjectinitself,butagood ruleistotrytoreducetheinternalpowerlossestoa minimum.Theselossesarequitelarge,beingabout 20HPforaContinental0200at2750rpm,60';<,of thisprobablybeingringdrag.Awellrun-inengineis thereforeamust,possiblysavingasmuchas61-IP, whichwouldresultinagainof4mphona200mph aircraftorroughly150yardsperlap.Balancingthe enginemayhelp,likewisematchingandsmoothingthe ports,butitisworthbearinginmindthataero-engines runatlowspeedasenginesgo,andsothepowermay wellbeimprovedbythebetterchargemixingoverthe normalroughfinishmayproduce.Goodenginecoolingisalsoimportant,anenginerunningtoohotwill notproduceitsbestpower,andmaysufferexpensive internaldamageaswell.Infactagoodcoolingsystem willpayforitselfnotonlyinenginelife,butalsoin speedsinceanefficientsystemcanuselessairand thusproducelessdrag.

Theprofiledragcanbesplitupintovariouscontributionsfromthecomponentproducingit.Irefer tothesepartsbyhorse-powerbecausethismakes comparisonwiththepoweravailableeasier.Fora formulaonethethrusthorsepowerappliedisabout 110x80=88hp.About30ofthisgoesaswing profiledragorabout0.5persquarefoot.Becauseof thistheminimumareaallowedisnormallyused,even thoughthisconflictswiththeneedformaximumspan. Onewayofreducingtheexposedareaistousealarge rootchord;sincetheareaismeasuredgrossthishides someinthefuselagewhilestillcomplyingwiththe minimumarearule.Ttismoredifficulttocalculate dragforthefuselage,undercarriageandcooling,but myguessisthatthefuselageisabout35hp.,andthe U/Candcoolingaround10each.Muchmoreofthese amountscanbesavedbycarefulgapsealingand ductingofairthanmightbeatfirstthought.Anyair thatpassesthroughtheaircraftmustlosesomeofits momentumandthiscreatesdrag.Anyoutwardleaks thatdonotpointaftareanalmosttotallossof momentum.Theobjectivehereistomaketheaircraft aswellsealedasasolidmodel;athoroughjobalong theselineswillproducerealresultsandismost effectiveifthoughtthroughwhiletheaircraftisbeing builtorbefore.

Theinduceddragvariesaskxn2XW2(kn2W2) wherebspan nloadfactor

U2b2U2b2 Waircraftweight kshapefactornormallyaround1.15 andasaresultisaminimumatleveltopspeed,when n=1andUismax.AtypicalfigureforanFlis3or 4hpat190kt.Thustheweightandspanhavelittle effectintheseconditions,howeverina31gturnthis figureisfactoredupbytenandthenbecomesavery significantpartofthetotaldrag.Thefirststepisto reducetheemptyweighttotheallowedminimumof 50Olb.;oncethishasbeendonetheonlyvariablesare thespan,whichislimitedbyweightandstrengthconsiderations;andalsotheconstantk,whichtakesin irregularitiesinspanwiseliftdistributionbrought aboutbythewing/fuselagejunction,theplanform, twistandtipshape.kisideally 1, sothereisscopehere foruseofcleverlytwistedrectangularplanforms, tapers,andellipsestosomeeffect.Thesavingis negligiblewhenlevelbutprobably3to5hpinthe turns.

Whenattemptingtodevisealongerspanwingthe problemarisesthatforagivenwingareaandroot chord(requiredonmidwingaircraftforpilotaccess andspardepth),anincreaseinspannaturallyresults inamoretaperedwing.Thiscannotbecarriedtoofar withoutcausingtipstallingproblems,andalsoresults inincreasedweightunlessthewingrootthicknessis increased.Thiswillincreasethewingprofiledragand reducetheallimportantlevelspeed.Itisclearthereis nogaininsacrificingtopspeedforturnperformance unlesstheracecourseissoshortthatthetopspeed wouldneverbereached.

AlthoughtheabovemainlyrelatestoFlaircraft,it isequallyapplicabletoFormulaVeeorindeedtoany aircraftattemptingtoachievehighperformanceon relativelylowpower.Thedifferenceinspeedbetween anaircraftdevelopedalongtheselinesandtheoriginal hasprovedtobe20mphormore,onanearlierspeed of180.Thisalsomeansthecruisespeedisupaswell, savingnearlyagallon/hourat120kts.

Teaseintocloseformationwiththe150fromthe starttosavetimejoiningup.Bitraggedatfirstonthe climb,and I rememberreadingHansRudel'swords, "Nothingeverworksinpractice,exceptthatwhich youhavepractised."Thecockpitnoise-levelrequires alotofshoutingtomypassenger,Colin(Half-Tanks) Chambers,toestablishthccorrectship-to-shipfrequency,sincehishead-setisujsand I can'ttakemy eyesofftheleaderlongenoughtofiddlewiththe selectorontheothersideofthecockpit.Can'tbreakoffanddoitmyselfeither,becausesomewherebelow meaninvisibleHarvardisclosingfast,readytoslide intopositionbehindmystarboardwing-tip.Anyway, 'Aviate,Naviaate,Communicate,'astheysay,andwe finallygetitsortedout.

Jugglingwiththrottle,stickandrudder, I easethe JodeltowithintwentyfeetoftheCessna,whilethe cameramanmakeselaborateincomprehensiblegestures,andbangsoffshotaftershot.Thislowwingloadinaformationstuffistoughgoingforarookie,and I findmyselfcrankingon'pro-leader'bank,while carryingoppositerudderintherelativelysafeposition belowandbehindhisrightwing.Occasionallywehit

asmoothpatchand I amalmostabletorelaxaswe sailmajesticallysidebyside,withbarelyacorrection necessary:then,"Bump!",andI'mlookingatthesunlightflashingonthetop-surfaceofhishigh-setwing. Howdidtheymanagewithrotaries?

I getthego-ahead,butI'mnotsatisfiedas I hear Colinshoutthathe'sglimpsedtheHarvardstillon ourright.Eyesgluedtothe150,Trefusetobudge 'til hear,"BravoPapafromAlf-alpha,"(Gwyn'svoice) "I'mbelowRomeoPapanow—you'reclear."

Withafeelingofsomereliefthatthatbig,yellow nosed,radial-enginebruteisnolongerbreathingover myshoulder,wewheelawayinanecstaticbreak, holdingtop-rudderawhiletoallowasmanyshotsas possibletobetakenofourpaleblueunderbellyand thebigblackunderwinacrosses,untilthenosedrops awaytowardstheWelshhills,andwepulloutand lookbackatanemptysky...

Iread"EncouragementforFools,-byRisteardMacRoibin (FliAtht, August22nd)withgreatinterest;interestwhich,Iam sure,issharedbysomanyother"fools"thatIwouldliketo intrudeuponyourvaluablespacetosuggestthatthosekeenon amateurconstructiongettogethernowwithaviewtotakingthe matterastepfurtherthansuggestedbyMr.MacRoibin.

Whileitisagreedthatthepiesentisnotagoodtimetotackle theauthoritiesaboutthefutureofsport-flying,Isuggestthat thoseinterestedshouldnotbecontenttositbackawaitinga moreopportunemomentinwhichtopressthcircase,hoping thatinthemeantime"agroupofexpertswithapracticalknowledgeofaeronautics"willproducea"testedandapproved design."Onthecontrary,Ibelievethatweshouldgettogether nowtoformaclub,society,association—callitwhatyouwill— whosegeneralaimwillbetopromotethewell-beingofthissport-flyingbusiness,andwhoseimmediateobjectwillbetostarta fundforthepurposeoffinancingthedesign,constructionand testingofamachinewhichcanbebuiltbytheamateur.Other objectsmightwellincludetheproductionofworkingdrawings ofsuchamachineforsaletomembersoftheorganizationata nominalfigureandtheprovisionofapprovedinspectionfacilities forthosebuildingtotheapproveddesign.

Havingproducedthedesignandmadeavailabletheseother facilities,thesuggestedorganization(asrepresentativeofthe amateurconstructor)wouldbeinagoodposition,whenthe timearose,topresenttotheappropriateGovernmentdepartmentacaseforrevisionoftheC.ofA.regulationsinsofaras theyaffectfineweatherfun-flying.Itiscertain,atleast,that suchanapproachtotheauthoritieswouldstandamuchgreater chanceofsuccessthanwouldbethecasewereeachindividual amateurtoattempttoobtainapprovalforhisownprivate design.

ShouldMr.MacRoibinoranyotherreadersbeinterestedin mysuggestions,perhapstheywouldgetintouchwithme.

Thearticlereferredtowasapleafromapre-warPoux builderfordesignswhichcouldbebuiltbyanamateur withouttheneedforrigorousC-of-Ainspection.

Designshewasadvocatingwereasingleseattail-less pusherwitha35hpflattwinandasimplehelicopter similartothosedevelopedinGermanyduringthe war.Nothingreallyappearedtocomeofitforsome timeandinthemeantime,apartfromAusters,only aeroplanesintheluxuryclasswerebeingbuilt. Percival'sofferingstartedwith200hpand£2,900and thecivilMessengerhadallof155hp.

Thescenewasnottostagnatcformorethana decade.IndeedasTigerMothswerereplacedbyChipmunksinRAFservice,sotheyweresoldbytender.I rememberG-ADGXbeingsoldcompletefor£16.00 andIboughtmyPJPfor£1210s.Od.lessengine.

Severalattemptsatsomethingdifferentweremade, perhapsthemostambitiousbeingthePlanetSatelite. WithaGipsyengineburiedneartheC-ofGitneeded anextensionshafttodrivethepropeller.Somuch vibrationwaspresentinthisshaftthatitwasnot possibletoflytheaeroplane!

Theold'A'licencedisappeared,togetherwithits necessaryqualificationofthreehours'soloin1949 andwasreplacedbyaPPLcallingforthirtyhoursof dualandsoloflying.Thatwasthepicturefortheclubs inthefifties,butelsewhereotherdevelopmentswere takingplace.

"UltraLightAircraftAssociationGroups"were beingformedasaresultofMr.Clegg'searlyenthusiasm.Parttimeenthusiastswereencouragedtohelp withoverhauls.ExRAFinstructorsgavetheirtime

Averyrealturningpointcamein1956.TheVolkswagonanditsassociatedTurbulentairframeappeared intheUK.Herewassomethingthatcouldsafelybe builtathomebythemaninthestreetandreallythis typestartedtheBritishhomebuildingcult.The ULAA,bynowthePFAwasequaltothetaskandit wasthroughtheofficesofthePFAthatthisnewtype receivedaPermittoFly.

TheJet!VolalsowithaRorergasturbineengine

Beforethewar,JohnCurriebuilttwoWotsat Lympne.Unfortunatelytheseweredestroyedby enemyactionin1940.WhilstchiefengineeratEastleighin1958'Joe'dugouthisoldplansandaidedand abettedbyVivBellamyproducedthefirstofwhatwas tobecomethemostpopularhomeconstructedbiplaneoftheseventies.AfewyearsearlierIhadhelped Joecommenceconstructionofahybridmachinewith aTigerfuselage;MaaisterouterwingsandaGipsy sixengine.Perhapsfortunately,itneverflew. interestwasrevivedinthelateLatimer-Needham's LutondesignsandbytheendofthefiftiesJohnTaylor hadhisfirstdesignairborne.Perhapsanothergolden decadeofBritishaviationwasabouttobegin.

Toeveryoneinterestedinultralightaircraftcame thesadnewsinMayofthepassingofCecil H. LatimerNeedhamwho,earlyin1937,evolvedtheLA4'Minor' asapracticalpersonalaeroplanefollowinghisrather unsuccessfulLA2designwhichhadbeenintendedto fillthevacuumcreatedbytheoutlawingoftheFlying Fleaandwhichboreavaguesimilaritytothelatter, havingnotsomuch'tandem'wingsasasetofbiplane wings,independentlysupported,withenormous staggerandverysmallgapbutdifferedbyhavinga conventionalempennage.

TheprototypeLA4'Minor'G-AEPDembodied manypartsofitspredecessorincludingtheinordinatelylongfuselagewhichremainsafeatureofthe Minorasweknowittoday.

Hewouldhavebeenveryproudtohaveheardabout thcgatheringofMinorsthattookplaceatSywell75. Altogethersevenexamplesweretobeseenincluding thetwo-seat'Duet'varientandtheoccasionprovided grandopportunityforpilots,constructorsandenthusiaststogettogether,compareperformancefiguresand generallydiscusseachother'smachines.OnSunday

morninganimpromptuformationRightwasaaranged. Thisturnedouttobenitheraglorioasshamblesdue totheratherwidevarietyinperformancerangngbetweenthe32h.p.JAPenginedG-ASEAofLaurie MansfieldtoJimScott's55h.p.Lycomingpowered G-AZPV'LittleGrunt'whichgoeslikearocket.Howeverwedideventuallymanagetogetroughlytogether inthesamepieceofskyforthebenefitofManDunn's camerainRobinOwen'sJodel.UnfortunatelyDick Sharphousewasunabletotakepartinhisnewly re-engined(witha1600ccVW)G-ATCJwhenhistailwheelfracturedthepreviouseveningafteritsfirsttest flight.

ComingtoTermswiththe"NewType" orSingleSeater

Theinstructorisfrequentlyaskedto'Checkout'a pilotonanunfamilartype,orapilotwishestoflya single-seateronwhichnodualinstructionisavailable. Thesecasesarenotreallya'check-out',whichstrictly meansacheckflightonafamiliartype,onwhichthe pilotisoutofpractice.Theworkactuallyreferredto isthe'Conversiontotype',whichrequiresadifferent approach.

Asalways,abriefingbyaninstructorisessential, makinguseofhandlingnotes,asavailable,sothatthe pilothasaclearideaoftheaircraftlayout,characteristicsetc.,beforeflight.Equallynecessaryisagood lookatitbeforeattemptingtostartit,asthereismuch tobelearntduringaninspectionandsometimespent sittinginit,justfindingoutwhereallthecontrolsare andtheirmodeofoperation.

ITthissoundselementary,considerthenextpoint; Muchcanbelearntfromanaeroplane'sappearance andanideaofitsperformanceaccuratelyforetold whenstillontheground,thusthepilotaskshimself thesequestions:

(I) Howlongdoestheaeroplanelook?(Besides checkingdata.)

Howlongisitincomparisonwiththespanand howmuchrudderisavailable?Thisgivesagood ideaofdirectionalstabilityandanydifficulties whichmightbemetinkeepingstraightintake-off andlanding.

Howmuchpowerisavailable?Thisalsohasa greatbearingon(2),asnobodywantstoapply morepowerthanonecancontroltheeffectsof!

Howwideapartarethewheels,istheCofGlikely tobehighorlowandhowmuchwingareaisthere?

Thesefactorsallpointtothedegreeofcrosswind whichmightbesafe,asanyaircraftwithhighCof G,largewingarea,andanarrowundercarriageis toberegardedwithcaution.

Howmuchwingareaisthereincomparisonwith theweightandthepoweravailable?Thisindicates probabletake-offdistanceandspeedrequiredto becomeairborne,alsowithabearingonthelanding.e.g.Apowerful,heavyaircraftwithlittle wingareawillclearlyacceleratequickly,butwill needtoreachahighspeedbeforeflying.

Wherearetheflaps?Normally,flapsmountedon alow-wingaircraftwillcauseittopitchgently nose-down,whentheyarelowered,withlittle effectonairspeed,unlessalargeamountislowered. Conversely,mosthigh-wingaeroplaneswillpitch nose-up,withlossofairspeed,withtheneedto trimFORWARD,unlessspecialarrangements aremadetoavoidthischaracteristic,whichisnot desirableintrainers.

Arethereanynon-standardcontrolsetc.,which willmakenecessaryanynon-standardprocedures?

Electricflapsareanexampleofthisandsomerun DOWNonlywhentheswitchishelddown,but UPallthewayastheswitchisheldintheUP positionunlessreturnedtoNeutral,asincertain Cessnavariants.Also,inastandardforcedlanding sequence,'MasterSwitchOFF'meansbeing deprivedofflaps,sotheorderhastobechanged.

Thesearejustexamplesandmuchelsecanbefound inanintelligentassessmentofthemachine.Assuming thatagoodbriefinghasbeengivenandthepilotis readytofly,thetaskisthesameinthecaseofeither conversion,assingle-seataeroplanesllymuchthe

sameasanyothers.Thereforethetaskisoneof investigationintotheperformanceanddemonstration.

Ialmostforgettosay,watchoutforaeroplaneswith pointedwings,whicharemoreinclinedtodropat thestallthantheplank-likevarietyandanyaeroplane whichisfittedwithleading-edgeslatsorslots,in additiontopointed/taperingwings,almostundoubtedlyneedsthem.

Whenseated,withtheenginerunning,thekeyto allsituationsisNEVERtobeinahurryandtoallow plentyofspaceforallthatistobeattempted.Thus oneshouldtaxislowly,takingintoaccountthevision forward,orlackofitandgainthefeeloftherudder, withaviewtotake-off.Anyswingswhichmaybe lurkingwillbeapparentinthisphaseandtheeffects andusefulnessofbrakecanbeseenatthisstage, especiallyiflittleruddercontrolisavailable.Whilst taxi-ing,theattitudeforalandingcanbedigested,as thisiswhatyouhavetoreturntoeventually.

Thebest'Firsttake-off'ismadedirectlyintowind, tohaveanyweather-cockeffectinyourfavour,with asmuchspaceaspossibleaheadandplentyofWIDTH toeitherside,incaseofanunexpecteddepartureata tangent.

Needlesstosay,thepowerisappliedONLYwhen theaircraftiscorrectlyalignedandatastandstill,and insmallquantities,asnobodywantsanythingto happentooquicklyforcomfort.Theaircraftshould movesmoothlyforwardwhileonecountersanyswing, andwhenfulldirectionalcontrolisestablished,one canbealittlemorebravewithpower,workingupto aflyingattitude,afterwhichtheaeroplaneshouldfly whenitfeelsready.

Asafeclimbingspeedshouldbeusedasperbriefing andifanycontrolsfeelsineffective,itissafetoincrease it.Themainobjectofthisphaseistogetplentyof heightbeforestartingworkontheperformance,soa suitableRPM,propellerpitchandspeedforall requirementsshouldalreadybeknown,toavoidsuch hazardsasengineoverheating,poorrateofclimbetc.

Onceatasafeheight,setuptypicalconditionsof cruiseandifthisareaisamystery,itissufficiently safetosetuptheengineataroundhalfpower,an averagepitchsettingandseewhatspeeditallmaintainsheightat.Thisallowstimetotrythefeelofthe aircraftbysimplyflyingaroundandespeciallyinturns whichgivesasoundappreciationofhowthecontrols areharmonised.

Therealdetailtobestudiedliesinflightatvarious airspeeds,sincethisrevealstheperformanceofthe wing,andthuswewouldusethefamiliarP.A.T.procedure,todiscoverwhatpowersettingsetc.are requiredtomaintainheightatthewholerangeofairspeedsstartingwiththehighonesandworkingdownwardstothelowest,ineasystages,alldoneslowlyand deliberately,withsounduseoftrimineachcase.

Theeffectivenessofthecontrolsthroughoutthe rangewillbeapparentandonewillinvariablyfind thereisonespeedatwhichtheaircraftmaintains heightwiththeleastamountofpowerapplied,asany attempttomaintainheightatalowerspeedrequires MOREpower.Thisisanimportantspeed,asitshows whentherelationshipbetweenliftanddragisatits mostfavourableforendurancepurposes.Also,the aircraftshouldbeatitsmostefficientintheglideand intheclimb,althoughforthepurposeofa'recommendedclimbingspeed,'thatfordescendingandthe

slow-safecruise,asmallmarginisaddedtothisfor thestudentandtheengine,toaffordbettercontrol andintheclimb,cooling.

Goingontothelowerairspeedswillquicklyestablishwhattheaeroplanefeelslikewhenflyinginefficiently,probablyverysoggyandunresponsive, requiringagooddealofpowerandtrim,withmuch attentiontobalance.Thereforespeedsinthisrangeare notusefulforanythingexcepttheshortlanding.Carefuluseofflapsatallspeedsbelowthe.flaplimiting speedwillestablishjusthowusefultheyareandthe effectsonthewingaccordingtotheamountused.

Attheendofthisphase,aclearunderstandingof thewing'sperformancewillgivethepilotconfidence enoughtolookintothestall,firstwithoutflapand later,with.Herethedesiredinformationisthestalling speed(s),thetendencytopitch,ifany,thepossibility ofthewing-drop,theeffectofanymisuseofaileron onthewaytothestall,oratit,theamountofheight lostandthedegreeofcontrolmovementneededto makecorrection.

Thisareawellsampled,afull-scalespincanbe tried,ifthetypeisclearedforsame.Astalletc.out ofaturn,poweredandunpoweredcompletesthis section,afterwhichthetypemaybeaerobatedwithin itsairframe'sstatedlimitswithafairideaofwhatis involvedandanappreciationofwhathappensifany manoeuvreismishandled.

Knowingsomethingaboutasafeclimbing/descendingspeed,asuitableapproachcanbesetup,allowing plentyoftimeforthoughtandjudgment,foradjustmenttobemadewhileheightremainsandwith optionsopenforovershootingetc.Thefirstlandingis alwaysexperimental,asoneistryingoutanewrange ofspeeds,attitudeswithandwithoutflap,statesof

trimandarrivingatthethresh-hold,anewundercarriageheight,whichhastobelearned.Oneisalways preparedtogoroundagainifanyfactorisnotentirely inorder,but,assumingthelandingisacceptable,itis besttolettheaeroplanerollforsomedistance,with noharshuseofbrake,justtoseehowquicklyitruns outofrudder.Assumingthatenoughspacehasbeen allowed,thereshouldbenotendencytorunoutof airfieldandthebrakesetc.canbesampledinsmall amountswhenappropriate.Thewholeflightwill normallyLakeaboutIhourforthetasktobedone properlyanditwillbepossibletoflyonother occasions,gainingmuchexperience.

Aninstructor or experiencedpilotwillnecessarily learntowalkbeforerunning,thusanyventuresinto thecross-windcharacteristics,shorttake-offand landing,sideslipping,wheellandingetc.areaswillbe takenwithcaution,workingupfromasmallworkloadtoagoodall-roundexperienceofthetype.

Itwillbeseenthattheconversiontotypeisamuch neglectedareaoftrainingandnottobetackledlightheartedlywiththe'Quickcircuitandyou'reonyour own'approach',whichmayleavethepilotwithahuge greyarcaofignoranceaboutsomevitalcharacteristic oftheaircraft,untilitcatchesupwithhimbystealth!

Itiswisetogainexperienceinforcedlandingsand alltheotherfringeareasassoonastimepermits,so thatanypilot,whethergoingontoanewdualtypevia aninstructor'sconversionprogrammeorthenew ownerofasingleseatercantakeadvantageofthe bestadviceavailableandapplya'findingout'procedure,leadingtoacompleteworkingknowledgeof thetype.

InMr.Pothecary'sArticle'LightAeroplanes39-45', hementionsseeingaHawkerTomtitusedasaroad block.Ithoughtyoumightbeinterestedtoknowthe historyofthismachine.TomtitK1786wasallottedto KenleyonJanuary,20th1931,whereitwasheldin storeuntil1934.KI786wasdemobbedonAugust26th, 1938andwasregisteredasG-AFTA.Itwasusedby theLeicestershireAeroClubuntilSeptember1941, whenAlexHenshawboughtG-AFTA,anduseditas apersonalhack,from1948to1945itwasusedasa roadblock,untilboughtbyaMr.Shea-Simmonds, andrestoredtotheregisteronFebruary.Ilth1946.

OnApril27th,1949,NevilleDukeacquired'ETA' anduseditforRacingandasanacrobaticmount. Duringthenexttenyearsitappearedatgardenparties anddisplayswiththerestoftheHawkerfleet.

In1960G-AFTAwashandedovertotheShuttleworthTrust,andin1967flownovertoDunsfoldfor overhaulandrepainting.K1786wasthelastTomtit built,andistheonlysurvivingTomtitoutofaproductionbatchof36aircraft.

TheRallytookplaceinthemiddleoftheremarkable Juneheatwaveandattractedvisitingaircraftfrom manyforeigncountriesincludingHolland,Germany, Switzerland,Sweden,NorwayandUnitedKingdom givingatrulyInternationalflavourtotheproceedings. TheKZClubisaveryactiveorganisationbasedon theuniquerangeofnativeDanishKZDesigns, examplesofallsurvivingmodelsincludingtheimpressiveKZIVTwin,beingpresentatStauning.AVWpoweredreplicaofthefirstKZDesigntheKZIwhich bearssomeresemblancetotheChiltonisalsobeing builtbutthiswasnotreadyforthisyear'sRally.How ever,the"Veterantly"movementinDenmarknow embracesallvintageaircraft,therebeingenthusiastic

followingsforPiperCub,Auster,TigerMothand otheraircraft.

StauningAirportisanexcellentvenueforaRally ofthiskind,theaerodromeauthoritieshavingactively encouragedKZactivitiescentredonStauning.Plans havebeenpreparedandfundsarenowbeingraisedto createapermanent'living'museumatStauning.

Some9or10aircraftattendedtheRallyfromBritain andgeneralfeelingwasthatthe700-800miletripwas wellworthmaking,andrepeating,infutureyears. Thereisawarmwelcomeandgreatenthusiasmfor vintageaircraftandvintageaircraftenthusiastsin DenmarkwhichmustassuretheannualKZRallya firmplaceinthelistofInternationalTly-in'events.

Mostnumerousofthenative DanishKZDesignsweretheKZ III,atypicalexamplebeing0YDAE,datingftom1936.TheKZIII ispoweredbythe100h.p.Cirrus MinorII

AdevelopmentoftheKZIII,the KZVIIispoweredby125h.p.or 142h.p.Continentalengines.0YDSBwasoneofanumberofvery fineexamplesoftheKZVIIseen atStauning.

Well,anothersupersuccessfulSywellisnowbehind usandyouwillbereadingallaboutitelsewhere. Sufficientonthispagetosaythatwewereverypleased toseesomanyofourGroupsattending.Thevalueof meetingrepresentativesonsuchanoccasion—tohear aboutyouractivitiesandtolistentoyourproblems andgrouseswasprovedbeyonddoubt.Tothosewe didictgetaroundtomeetingintheexcitementofthe occasionweapologiseandlookforwardtohearing fromyoufromtimetotimenevertheless.

Thisyearaspecialprizewasonofferforthebest turnedoutGroup-operatedaircraft,takingintoconsiderationthegeneralcondition.standardofmaintenanceandequipmentandsoonoftheaircraftas wellastheextentofactivitiesoftheGroup.Thelarge numbersofGroupaeroplanesattendingmadeforan unenviabletaskforthejudges.HowevertheDerwent FlyingGroupwiththeirbeautifulredandwhiteJodel 117G-AXHVrichlydeservedthefinaldecision.The Group,comprisingsixmembersundertheleadership ofChairmanDonCashmoreandSecretaryKenPayne operatefrontHucknallandtheirmachine,withits distinctivechequeredcolourschemehasbeena familiarsightatmanyralliesupanddownthecountry, includingSywell,forseveralyearsnowyetstillreflects (literally)thedetailedattentionpaidtoit.

calmeddownenoughtogettoSywell.TheGroupare holdingaFly-Inattheirairfield,theOaks,Long Mountain,overtheweekend27th-28thSeptemberin conjunctionwiththeVintageAircraftClubandeveryoneiswelcome—onfootoronwing.TheGroup's TigerMothG-ANJKsuccessfullynegotiatedanother C.ofA.earlierintheyearafterconsiderable(expensive!!!)workhadbeencarriedoutontheenginetogetherwithsomerecoveringofthewingsandfuselage. Tofinishitoffandreallysmartenituptheaircraftwas resprayedorangewithwhitetrimandletters.Their effortsonthisfrontprovedespeciallysuccessfulaswas witnessedatthePresentationofAwardsatSywellon Saturdayevening.Notsatisfiedwiththebusinessof operatingoneaircraftthough,theyarewellontheway towardscomple6onoftheirownV.P.I.Withthe structurecompleteandcoveringfollowingclose behind,theaeroplanewillbefinishedinfleetcolours tomatchtheTiger.TheVWengineconversioniswell inhandunderthedirectionofJohnJonesandwhen allthatisfinishedattheendoftheseasontheyare goingtoextendtheClubhouseandalsobuildona kitchen.Phew!!!

Finally.allGroupsareremindedthataffiliation subscriptionsfor'75[76felldueonIstJulylastand tothoseofyouwhohavestillnotyetreturnedyour RenewalFOrm(withyoursubscription,ifapplicable) weurgentlyrequestyoutodosowithoutdelayto enableustokeepourrecordsstraightanduptodate.

TheubiquitousJodelwithoutdoubtalsoremains themostpopularaircraftamongstoperationalPFA Groups,theDIItoD120rangebeingjustaboutthe optimuminuseful,simpleeconomy.

SincetheinstitutionoftheGeneralCouncilofthe PFA,ithascomprisedonlyrepresentativesfromlocal Strutsandforsometimeitwasconsideredrightthat Groups,beingamajorpartoftheAssociation'sactivities,shouldalsohaveavoiceontheCouncil.Thusit wasthatattheCouncilMeetingatKegworth,DerbyshirelastApril,afterdetailedconsiderationoftheir operationsoveryearspast,theirrecordinpromoting ourkindofflyingandtheirgeneralenthusiasmtowardssportingaviationaswellasmanyotherfactors thattheMcAullyFlyingGroupandtheMontgomeryshireUltraLightFlyingClubwereinvitedtobe representedontheCouncil.BoththeseGroupshave givenlongstandingsupporttolightaviationintheir ownparticularfields.Wewelcomethemandlookforwardtothevaluablecontributiontheywillmake towardsformulationoftheAssociation'sgrowthand directioninthefuture.

WhenwearrivedonFriday,July27ththeCassutt wasreadyforitsfirstflight.JoeVogtwithmanyhours flyingbehindhimandplentyofexperienceinthe MidgetMustangwastomakethisfirstflight,butthe winddelayedituntillateintheevening.Allthrough theafternoonandearlyeveningitblewacrossthe stripanditwasnotuntilalmostsunsetbeforethe windsockwentlimp.Joesetoffdownthestripon whatwastobeacheckrunbutheliftedoff,heldthe Cassuttjustabovethegrassalmosttotheendofthe stripandthenclimbedawayoverthetrees.After severalcircuitshelandedinthefadinglight.

OnthewaytoOshkosh'73,1spentafewdayswith EdFisherandhisfamilyattheirhome,"Birdland". Here,withanairstripbythehouse,thewholefamily areinvolvedinbuildingorflyingaircraft.Thehouse andhangarstandbesideacountryroadfromwhich thestriprunsawayatrightanglestoendinthick woodland.Thepowerlinesalongtheroadandthe treesattheotherendshortentheeffectivelengthofthe field.

Edworksinanengineeringplantsomemilesaway, nearCleveland,butacceptsthecommutingforthe pleasureofcountrylifeandtheprideofowninghis ownairfield.Apartfromhisownaircraft,thereisspace forlocalEAAmemberstohangartheiraircraftand aviationfuelisavailableforotherpeoplewhooperate fromtheirownfieldsnearby.

Joereportedthattherewerenomajorproblems.The engineshowedsignsofoverheatingandtheflapswere notoperatingcorrectly.Apartfromthisallwaswell andtherewasnowproofthattherewasamplelength inthestriptosuittheCassutt.Afterringingmostof themembersofthelocalEAAchaptertotellthemthe news,Edreturnedtothehangartoworkwellintothe nighttomodifytheenginecowlandcorrecttheflap gear.HesettoworkagainonSaturdayandlaterinthe dayflewitforthefirsttimehimself'.

ThelargestresidentisaBarnardNewStandard biplane,theonlysurvivorofaprototypebatchbuilt beforethewarinthehopeofanarmycontract.Itwas rebuiltbylocalenthusiastsandlinishedinservice colours.Takingupafairbitofspaceforahomebuilt isaSmithTermite.Theowner,BillKleinsorge,was polishingitupforOshkoshwhenwearrivedbutthe forecastofstrongheadwindsmadehimdecideona tripbycarinstead.DwarfedbytheStandardwasJoe Vogt'sMidgetMustang,coveredbydustsheetsto protectitfrontthecarelesshabitsoftheindoorflyers nestinginthehangarroof.

TherestoftheaircraftbelongedtotheFishers.Just insidethedoorwasaTaylorcraftinrathersadconditionwithitswingsoff.Behindthiswasthepart finishedfuselageofaPietenpolAircamperbeingbuilt byMrsFisher.Isawotherpartsofitbehindthe furnitureinthelounge.Inacornerofthehangarwas Ed'sfirsthomebuilt,ablackandwhiteStiffsSkycoupe. Partoftheenginewasmissinghavinggivenittothe latestcreation,theCassutt.Finallytherewasan AeroncaChampionclaimedbyEd'seldestson.Pride ofplacewenttotheCassuttfinishedinbermudablue

OnSundaytheweatherwasperfectandmostofthe localenthusiastsarrivedbyairorcartoseethe Cassuttperform.SoonaSuperCat,TaylorcraftBC 12DandL2,AeroncaChief,Commonwealth185and aCitabriawerelinedupbythehangar.Theownerof theStandardtookusonlocalflightsandIwasable toseeLakeEricfromtheair.Iwasalso a bletosee howsmalltheBirdlandstripseemedsurroundedby acresofwoodland.Inspiteofthiswelandedinless thanhalf

WhileEdfussedovertheCassuttthevisitorstalked shop,tookturnsatracingroundthestripinago-cart orjustlayinthesun.Oddaircraftcameoverfrom nearbyConcordtoseewhatwashappeningincluding aTravellerwhichlookedasthoughitwouldlandbut thoughtbetterofit.

AtlasttheCassuttwasstartedandEdtookoffand demonstratedhiscreationtohisownandeveryone else'ssatisfaction.Atlasthelanded,whippedoffthe cowlingbeforeitmeltedandthepartywasover.The visitorsdepartedinquicksuccessionandwepushed thelocalaircraftintothehangar.Iwasleftwithfeelingsalmost of disbeliefthatsuchadaywaspossible, andenvyforsomethingthatwouldbealmostimpossible in thiscountry.

WeleftforOshkoshthenextdaybutEdstayedto workontheCassutt.BytheendofAugusthehad loggedover40hoursinitandwasverysatisfiedwith itsperformance.Hewouldadmittonofurtherplans butsaidhethoughtheoughttohelphiswifefinishher Pietenpol.InspiteofthisIamsuretherewillbean N3EFunderconstructionbeforelongtojoinN2EF.

BobHeadisprobablyuniqueintheU.K.inhaving learnttoflyAFTERamotoraccidentlefthim paralysedinbothlegsandhespentsome18monthsin thefamousStokeMandevilleHospital.HislatestprojectisaRollasonBetaRacerandheplansbothtorace itandtourwithit,hismajorambitionbeingtoflyto Australia.

'fftwasquitebychancethatIwenttoDenhamwith somefriends,whowerethenflyingaTigerMothand themainthingabouttheFlyingClubwhichappealed tomewastheatmosphereoffriendliness.Iappreciated peopletotalktoandaplacetogoto.Itwasn'tlong beforesomeonesaid:"Areyouflying7andI was somehowputintotheTiaerandflown,ftwasaareal experienceandgraduallyitoccurredtomethathere wasanewkindoffreedomwhichmightnothe impossibleforme.Idecidedtotryflyingandalthough taxi-ingwasquitedifficultandrequiredalotofawkwardleg-work,itwasnotreallybeyondmeaslongas Ididn'thavetomovetheruddertooquickly.

wastakingai;hortcourseatBrunelUniversityand foundthataflyingGroupwasbeingformedamong studentsatBlackbashe,inassociationwithaFlying Club,so1tppliedforaMedicaltofindoutwhetherI wouldreallybeallowedtoholdalicence.Thedoctor wasveryreassuringandfoundthatitwasquite possibleformetofly,althoughpossiblynotalltypesof aircraftandIwasexaminedbyasecondMinistry doctorwhoflewwithmetofindoutmylimitations,if any.

ThehappyoutcomeofthiswasaStudent'slicence andtrainingonthePiperColt,whichwasreckonedto beastraightforwardtypeformyneeds.Therewasa lotofcompetitionforaeroplanesandIoftenhadto drivealongwaytotheairfieldandwaitaroundto claimaflight.butImadeprogressandeventually'went solo.

WhenIgotontoCross-countryflights,thecontrollerswereabitsurprisedtoseemearrivesolowith myqualifyingform,havingparkedrightoutsidethe towerandgoneupthestepsoncrutches!Thefinal handlingtestwasnotreallyaproblem,asIfeltableto copewitheverythingandeventhespinwentaccording toplan.

I was verypleasedtogainaPPLwhichmeantthatI couldagaintravelaboutatquitehighspeedsandsee placesIneverreallyexpectedtogettowithjustan InvalidCar,whichisprettylonelydriving.AnaeroplanemakesyoumuchmoreapartoftheClubandis moresociablealtogether.

Fortunately.Ihaveneveractuallygotlost,butwas abitworriedduringsomeofmyCross-Countryflight aboutweather.itwassometimeshardtokeepaway fromcloud,butTalwaysmanagedtogetthere.

I'mcertainlynotthebestpilotintheworld,butthe ideaofmoreinterestingaeroplanesappealedtomeand decidedtotrysuchthingsastheStammTigerMoth andChipmunk.Taxi-ingandcross-windsgaveme sometrouble,astherudderworkisverytiringandT willadmitthatthereoremanydayswhenIwouldnot flyoneofthesetypesbecauseofwind,whichwould notworrytheaveragepilot,butit'sbesttoknowone's limitationsandIthinkEmawareofmine.

Ididtryoutsomehandcontrols,tocopebetterwith therudderandtheywereagreathelp.Afriendofmine, whoissimilarlyparalysed,butwaspreviouslyapilot, hasCAAapproveddevicestofitontoPipercontrols andoperatestherudder by handandIthinksome arrangementlikethiswouldmakeitquitepossiblefor metoflyadvancedaeroplanesonequaltermswiththe ablebodiedpilot.

IbecameinterestedintheBeta,afterseeingonefly attheTigerClubandfrankly,Ilikedthespeeditwent at.Iboughtapart-completekitandthisisnowalmost finished.ItreallylooksveryniceandIthinkifItake itcarefullyuntilTgettoknowitproperly,Ishouldbe abletoraceit.Perhapsnotanall-timewinner,butto haveracedandbeenplacedwillbeagoodstart,with somethingbetterwhenIgainexperience.

TheproblemwithconvertingontoaBetaisinfindingsometwoseaterlikeitwhichdoesn'tbite,asaway ofgainingexperience.Wecompromisedandftrieda DH.Chipmunk,fromtherearseat,andnotusingthe flaps,soitfloatedanawfullotonlandingandthe attitudesandhandlingweresomethinglikewhat wouldexpectfromatail-wheelRacer.Nothing actuallywentwrongand,if'Ichoosemytimeandplace withcare,Idon'texpectanyalarmingdifferencesin theBeta.

Itsperformanceisusefulasatouringaeroplane,too. Itis so fastthatagoodtouraroundEuropeisquite possibleonitsendurance,givenfairweather.Iam goingtotrytheRF4togetusedtothecockpitand seating,asthevarevery'similarinlayout,andIthink Tcouldbecomfortableenoughtoflyforquitelong distances.

Allthisisveryexpensiveandcanonlybemanaged withalotofovertime,butitis,forme,aprojectto lookforwardtoanditmaybeameansofraising moneyforcharityetc.ifIcanbesponsoredonsome longerdistanceflyingaroundFlyingClubsinEurope, toinspireotherpeopleinmypositiontobranchout andfeelunrestrictedbyphysicallimitations.

Already,FhaveflownaStammwithafriendtothe IsleofManandaroundScotland,oneweekinJune withperfectweather.Thatreally was agoodholiday, aswellasprovingtomyselfwhatcouldbedone.Aerodromescanbeabittiresomewhenyouhavetowalka long way fromwhereyoupark,butwithgoodplanning,itwasmostlypossibletoovercomethisand fortunatelymycrutchesstowedneatlyawayinthe Stampeastheyaretelescopic.Wealwayscarriedan umbrellain easeofrain,asyoucangetverywelin even 100yardsifyoucanonlywalkslowly.Everyone hasbeenveryhelpfulataerodromes,whichisencouraging.

Ishould verymuch liketodosonicinstrumentflying andonedayhaveanInstrumentRating.Ihadalook ataerobaticsintheStampeandthatlooksinteresting, too,astheBetaisknowntobequitecapableofgood thinas,ifaclearancecanbeobtained.

FlyingtoAustraliaisverymuchinthefuture,but T don'tseewhythatshouldnotbepossibleforme.Flyingisaveryinterestingclub,andgoesalloverthe world,sothetravelandthemeansofmeetingpeople iswhatIhavereallygainedfromit.Itwouldbeso easytositaroundathomeanddonothingmuch,but flyingisfullofthinastofindoutabout.

ThenextstageistolearnsomemoreaboutnavigationandIhopetodothisbyflyingtoDenmarkanda fewotherplacesunderinstruction.Theseadoesn't reallyworrymemuch.Ifit'stheshortestwaytoa place,it'sstillthemostsensible,ifyouplanthings carefully.
