Regrettably.toomanyhaverememberedthatsavingbetterthantheyhave rememberedhistory:andsufferedinconsequence.!Lasisprobable,Henry FordwasreferringstrictlytotheInstoryofautomobileengineering,he couldhavebeenright:foratthattimeithadnohistory'tospeakof,and HenryFordhimself Was busymakingit.BLittoday,wereanymotor engineerordesignertoapproachhistaskwitha"historyisbunk-attitude, hewouldbedisregardingtheaccumulatedandrecordedexperiencesofall hispredecessors.andwouldwithoutdoubtrepeatinnumerablemistakes anddisastersthatrecordedexperiencecouldhavetaughthimtoavoid.

Sowithaviation.Ourearliestpredecessors,whohadnotyetflown.were mainlyoccupiedinattemptstoemulatethemillionyears'experiencesof flappingwingbirds.TheymightwellhavesaidwithHenryFordthat historyWASbunk,butwiththerealisationthatmanisunlikelyevertofly likeabird,cametheinventionsthatmademannedflightpossible.That, likeautomobileengineering,nowhasitsownaccumulatedandrecorded experiences:whichisnothingmoreorlessthanhistory.Todaythereisa greatmassofaviationhistoryfromwhichweintheP.E.A.canlearn.We havenoneedtorepeatoldmistakes,fallintoancienttraps.andsocause ourselvesunnecessaryexpenseandtrouble.

TheEditorsof Popularflying haveclonemethehonourofaskingmeto writethisleadingarticleonbeginningmythirdtermasyourPresident. WhatIhavetosayisbasedonthethoughtsabove.

Wehavecomealongwayinthelastdecade,andwithover4,000(four thousand)members,andresponsibilityinvariouswaysforsomethinglike 400(fourhundred)airplanes,wearethebiggestnon-commercialflying organisationinthecountryOurAnnualRallyalSywellisthebiggest gatheringofitskindeverheldinEurope.Wehaveanimportantstatus. andareputationtokeepup.Onthewholewedothisfairlywell.Our hnaricialaffairsare Siricdy andwellregulated;ouradministrationisimproving.ourengineeringstandardsarehigh,andthestandardsofflying ofourmembersisreasonable.thoughIthinkitcouldbeimproved.Butwe dostillhavethoseamonguswho,takinghistoryisbunkapproach,will notlearnfrom,orlistento,otherswhonotonlyhavetheexperience,but arereadytodotheirbesttohelpwhoeverispreparedtoask.Wehave availableinourvariousdepartmentsandcommitteesavastfundof experienceandinformation.andtheaimofthoseconcernedistomakeit availabletoallwhoask.AndhereIrefernotonlytotheolderestablished elementsoftheP.F.A.,butalsothenewestcreations,namely,thePilotage CommitteeandtheAirfieldsCommittee:andIthinkwhatwedonotyet have,namely,aCommitteeexpertinalltheregulationsandsafetyrequirementsinvolvedintheorganisationofRalliesandDisplays.

Thisthenismyprinciplethought.Wearealargeandimportant organisation:amongourmembersisavastfundofknowledgeandexperience.Iwouldliketoseeeverymeansusedtomakeitavailabletothose whoneedit—andthosewhoneedittoask.111overthenextfewyears.we canperfectthisuseofrecordedexperience,thenIthinkweshallbebetter equippedtogainthemaximumbenefitsfromthefruitsofourdesign competition:andenhancethegoodnameofP.F.A.evenfurther.

Inthesematters,IconceiveitisthedutyofyourPresidenttobeyour servant,andwilldomybest.

OneofmyearliestairtestswasontheTipsyNipper, builtatthattimebyAvionsFaireyatGossehesin Belgium,andhandledinthiscountrybytheFairey AviationCo.,theninresidenceatWhiteWaltham. Theactualaircraftwas00-NIF,nowontheU.K. registerasG-ATUTI.Theenginewasa40-h.p.PollmanHEPUconversionoftheVolkswagen,andthe aircraft,asnow,wasbuiltwithaweldedsteeltube fuselageandrudder,andwoodenfabric-covered mainplane,tailplaneandelevator.AvionsFaireywent intoproductionwiththeNipperfittedwiththeStark StamoVolkswagenconversion,giving45h.p.,and havingdualignition,whichwaslackingontheHEPU conversion.ManyoftheseBelgium-builtaircraftwere buiItandsolduntilAvionsFaireyceasedproductionin 1961,andsoldalltherights,togetherwithalarge assortmentofuncompletedparts,tothefirmofCobelavia.Thislatterfirmneverproducedtheaircraftin anynumbers;andthelatestdevelopmentistheacquisitionbyNipperAircraftLtd.,basedatEastMidlandsAirport,CastleDonington,nearDerby,ofall rightsandplansfromCobelavia.

TheBritish-producedNipperwasbeingbuiltat KirbymoorsideinYorkshirebySlingsbySailplanes, undercontractfromNipperAircraftLtd.,andfitted withaRollasonArdenMk.Xengine,whichisagain aVolkswagenconversionandwhichdevelops45h.p. Thisengine,ofcourse,hasdualignition,andpermits theBritishNippertobecertifiedinthePublicTransportCategoryforclubuse.Theseaircraftmay,therefore,beusedbyclubsandschoolsforhire,andarenot restrictedastheywouldhavebeenifflyingonthe permitorequivalentcertification.Theenginelifeunder thiscertificationis1,000hours.If,however,aprivate ownerdesiresgreaterpower,andiswillingtooperate underthepermit(orequivalent)certification,hecan alsofithighercompressionpistons,andconvertthe ArdernMk.Xtogive53h.p.andobtaintheadditional performancewhichgoeswithit.A1,600-c.c.engineis alsoavailable.

Twoaircraftwereflownforthisairtest.Thefirst, G-AVKT,isactuallyaCobelaviaproduct,fittedby themwithanArdemMk.Xengine,newcowling,and

broughtuptofullMarkIIIstandards.G-AVKTthus becametheMarkIIIprototype.Thesecond,GAVKH,basedatElstree,isthefirstoftheSlingsbybuiltMarkMs.Bothaircrafthandlethesame;but performancefiguresandspecificcommentsinthis reportreferthroughouttotheBritish-builtaeroplane.

Thecockpit

Entrytothecockpitisovertheportwingroot, usingasectionofthetrailingedgewhichhingesdown toformastep.Thesingle-piececanopyandwindshield hingestostarboard,exposingthewholeofthecockpit toenablethepilottoenter.Whenseatedinthecockpit, thewingsappeartosproutfromone'sshoulders;and althoughthisrestrictstheviewsomewhatoneither side,somehelpisgivenbytransparentpanelsinthe wingrootsthroughwhichonemaylookdownpastthe mainwheels,whicharevisiblethroughthem.Thewing mainsparpassesoverthecockpitimmediatelyinfront ofthepilot,andisinfactattachedtothefuselageby twosubstantialboltswhicharevisibleoneitherside ofthesmallinstrumentpanelmountedontopofthe spar.Viewaheadoverthenoseisgood,thoughthe actualcanopywashardlyuptothestandardsonehas becomeaccustomedtoonSlingsby-builtsailplanes, anddidnotpermitperfectvision;thereisnoclearviewpanel,butventilationissuchthatitisunlikelyto mistupexceptundersevereconditions.

Controlsarenormal,andincludewheelbrakes, operatedbyaleveronthecontrolcolumn.Thesecan belockedonforparking,butanoticeonthepanel forbidstheiruseatover19m.p.h.;onneitherofthe aircrafttestedwerethebrakespowerfulenoughto holdtheaircraftforenginecheckswithoutwheel chocks.Fore-and-afttrimisbymeansofspringbias, adjustablebyasmallleverinaratchetalsoattached tothecontrolcolumn.Althoughnogreatadjustment isevernecessary—stickforcesbeingverysmall—the adjustmentwasstiffandawkwardtomake.One's personalpreferenceisforatrimtab,fittedtothe elevator;thisprovidesameansofcontrollingthe aircraftshouldtheelevatorcircuitfail,andhaving onceexperiencedsuchafailureonanothermakeof aircraft,thispilotfeelsstronglyaboutit.Itisnote-

worthythatontheTigerMoth,whichalsohasa springbiastoeffectfore-and-afttrim,theelevator controlcircuitisinfactinduplicate.

Thecockpitis18-1,in.widealthelevelofthetop longerons,andwhennormallyseatedthenearest instrumentwas18-1,in.fromthepilot'seye.Inthe originalTipsyNipperthecockpitwasrenderedsomewhatuncomfortablebythecross-tubewhichatthe levelofthetoplongeronsalsoformsthetopsupport fortheseat.Thelackofsupportforthepilot's shouldersallowedthelowseatbacktopressuncomfortablyintothesmallofone'sback.TheMarkHI isimprovedinthisrespectbythearrangementofseat cushionsandiscertainlymorecomfortable.Butthere isstillroomforimprovement.Bettersupportforone's shoulderswouldbewelcome,andsoalsowouldmore roomforone'sknees.Thelattercouldbeachievedby movingtherudderpedalsslightlyforward,sothatthe pilorslegscouldbestraighterout.Itisunderstood thatoneownerhas:tctuallvdonethis.

I.A.S.andthenallowedtogatherspeedbefore roundingupintotheclimb.Thistechniqueproduced agroundroll,inzerowind,ongrass,ofapproximately 160yards.Thebestclimbingspeedatfullthrottle, givingjust3,000r.p.m.,ontheclimbseemedtobe 65m.p.h.(56kt.)1.A.S.Itwasnot easyto checkrates ofclimb,partlybecauseitwasadayoffairlyactive thermals,whichsometimesboostedclimbwellbeyond themakers'figure(650ft./min.atfullloadatsealevel):andpartlybecausethealtimeterfittedisa single-needlecoarse-readinginstrumentwhichrenders accuratemeasurementmoredifficultthanwiththe customary sensitive two-needIejob.

Inlevelflightthefollowingairspeedswereobtained attheenginer.p.m.shown.Thereadingsarecorrected forheightandtemperature,butnotforpositionerror. ItisunderstoodthatP.E.isinanycasesmallatthese speeds.

Handling

Groundhandlingisalmostridiculouslyeasyand, aidedbythebrakes,andnosewheelcoupledtothe rudderbar,thegoodviewaheadmakesitalmost impossibletogowrong.Take-offisnomorethana matterofliningupandopeningthethrottle.If trimmedfullyback,theNipperwillactuallyflyitself offatabout65m.p.h.I.A.S.Thisis,however,rather toughtreatmentonabumpygrassfield,andwiththe stickwellback,thoughthepressureislight,theNipper canbeliftedoffatsomethinglike40m.p.h.(35kt.)

TheMk.IllNipperisstablebothforeandaft,and laterally,thelatternodoubtcluetothehighwine positionanddihedralwithit.Itwasfoundpossibleto fly indefinitelyhandsorfeetoff.Allcontrolforcesare verylight,comparablewiththoseoftheTurbulent.

Thereisnosignificantaerodynamicstall\yarning, andinconsequencetheNipperhasawarninglight whichbeginstoflashat39/37m.p.h.I.A.S.(34/32kt.). Theactualstalloccurred(usingatrickleofpower)at 32/33m.p.h.(27/28kt.)andwasaccompaniedineach casebythenosedroppingandsometimesawing. Recoverywasineachcasenormalandspeedy,with littlelossofheight.

AfeatureoftheNipperwhichisworthcommentis thatinpower-offglidesitlosesheightquitefast,and duringturnsstillfaster;useofcontrols,asinallvery smallaircraft,addsnoticeablytothedrag,andforthis reasonitisaswelltopayattentiontokeepingupto thedesiredspeedinpower-offglidingturns,especially ontheapproachtoland.Theoptimumglidingspeed eitherpoweronorpoweroffseemedtobe65m.p.h. T.A.S.,whichhastheadvantageofbeingthesameas thespeedforclimbandsoallthesimplertoremember.

Thisspeedwasusedinthecircuit,taperingthe approachafterturningfinalsto60m.p.h.1.A.S. (52kt.)overthehedee.Usingmorepower,thefinal speedcan,onasuitableday,beslower,andavery shortlandingrunispossible.Using60m.p.h.over thehedge,withnowindandaslightdowngradeon grass,thetotaldistanceusedfromtheboundary,which wascrossedatabout10ft.height,totheendofthe landingrunwasapproximately250yards.Theview aheadisparticularlygoodduringthefinalstagesofan approach,andwithpracticethereisnodoubtthat thisfigurecouldbeimproved.Themakers'figureis 500yardstostandstillafterlandingovera50-ft. obstacle.

Itisovertwoyearssincethelastarticleinthisseries, andwehavebeenawaitingtheopportunitytovisit anotherworkshoptowriteabout.Recently,onatrip uptothePFAInternationalRallyOrganisingCommitteeatSywell,wemadeapointofdroppingoffin NorthamptontoseeJimBenfield'sworkshop.As manyreaderswillknow,Jimhasbeenactiveinthc PFAformanyyearsastheSywellRallyAccommodationOfficer.Itisinthiscapacitythatwehave becomeacquanitedwithhim.

Jim'sworkshopishisdoublegarage,justoutside thebackdoor.Afirstsightofitcouldbedescribedas eitheranAlladin'sCave,withgoodies,oralternatively, aVolkswagencaginegraveyard—-dependingonyour outlookandwhetheryouareanenthusiastfoiour sortofthings

Themainreasonforourvisitwastohavealookat hiscurrentproject,whichisinconnectionwiththe dynomometerwhichhehasrecentlyacquiredandis proposingtofitupasaverywelcomeandvaluable facilityavailabletothePFAforenginetesting.Now, forthoseofyouwhodon'tknow,andwewere certainlynotverysure,advnomometerisameansof loadinganenginewithanartificialload,inorderthat suchenginemayberuituptomaximumpowerwithout therevs,goingcompletelyofftheclock.Infact,being abletovarythisloadatvariousrevolutionsinorder thataneffectivemeansofhorsepoweroutputcanbe calculated.Ourphotograph,Fig.I,givesanideaofthe generalarrangementandfromthedialinthebackgrounditispossible,withsuitablearithmetic,to calculate[hehorsepoweroutputoftheengine.The actualloadiscreatedbypumping150gals,ofwater aroundfromaheadertank,throughthedvnomometer andbackagain.Needlesstosay,increatingthisloud, excessheatisproducedandthusthewaterhastobe cooledbyfan-producedforcedair,making[he operationslightlymoreinvolved.

Thegeneralideaofthewholeoperation,isthatwhen soniemembercolliesupwithanewideaormod,fora VWenginethiscanbeeffectivelytestedonJim's dynamometer,whichheproposestomakeavailable tothePFAInernhershipandtheresultcanthusbe comparedwithastandardVWengine.Thesightingof thispieceofequipment,atthemoment,isinastateof flux.Obviously,onecanhardlyrunanysortofengine atfullboreforaperiodoftimeinagarageina surburbanhousingareaandJimislookingfora disusedruralair-raidshelter,orsimilm,within reasonableradiusofhishome,inwhichtoinstallthe machine,theheadertankandalltheancilliarygear. Inthisconnectionhehasbuiltaweldedframeforthe purposeofrunninginanengineupto100h.p.prior toaloadtestingonthedynometer.Provisionhasbeen madetolashthewholeframetoconcretevialegbolts and,oninquiringoninstrumentsandcontrols,hetells usthatheintendstofitteleflexpipethrottlecontrol andremotereadingengineinstruments. Lo observe whilsthidingbehindasturdywallbetweenhimselfand theengine.

Thisjustgoestoconfirm[hatwhichwe,onthe magazine.havealwaysfelt,thatthereisalotofuseful workbeingclone,outinthebackwoods,sotospeak, outsideourobservation.Whenthesearcjoined togetherwithideasofothermembers.theycanreally helpusontheroadtobetterengines,anaspectwhich wehavealwaysrecognisedaslackMg.

ByalterMgthebaffleswithinthepumpfromthe adjustablewheelinthefrontleftofthephoto.,itis possibletovarytheloadatanyparticularrevolutions. Theengineiscoupledwithauniversaljoint,butone snagthatJimhasencounteredisthat,withtheVW, forexample,asconvertedforaerouse,oncemarried uptothedynomometerthereisnolongeranypropeller toswingandthereforenoeasywayofstartingthe engine.Heisworkingonacrankhandleaduptionto theotherendofthedynomometer,inordertoprovide thestartingrotation.Needlesstosaythelargeraero engineswiththeirownelectricalsystemcanbestarted withexistingself-starters.

Oneofinventionsisatoolforremovingthe oilpumpfromaVWenginewithouthavingtosplit thecrankcasetodoso.Ourphotograph.Fig.2,shows thetopcasingfromIwooilpumps.onehavingbeen removedbyhismethodandMeleftImndonehaving beenremovedbytheprocess of insertingascrewdriver undertheflangetoprizeitout,withtheresultthat canbeseen.His'homemade'toolisillustratedin Fig3.Basicallyitcomprisestwo'feet'whichcanbe insertedintotheoilwaysofthepump,inorderthata 'lift'canbeexertedon[hepumphousing.Jimhas askedustobemostspecific[hatthebottomofthese feetmustbesmooth.inordernottodamagetheoilwaysinwhichtheyareinsertedThephotoinFig 4 showsthelugs or thetoolinsertedintheoilpumpoilways,withthenutsreadytobescreweddownoverthe bridgingpiece,whichwillbeusedtoexertanupward liftonthewholepumpassemblyanddiemetalbridge erectedovertheoilpumpwithitsdownwardpressure pointsestablishedonthecrankcaseitself.Itcan furtherbeseenthatbytighteningupallfour 11uts,one willexertanupwardpressureontheoilpumpand, Jirnhasfound,thepumpwillbeextractedwithout damage,withouthavingtosplitthecrankcasewhich, incidentlyisshownsplitinourillustration.The'feet' forthiswereelectricallyweldedontothestudsand allthepartsofthistoolareeasilymadeintheaverage workshop.Lengthsofsuitable 4" diametersteelbeing threadeddown,oreveninsoniecases,oldboltsbeing used,cutandwelded.Thusonejobwhich,heforone, hasfounddifficult,hasbeensolvedwiththeuseofthis ingeniouslittletool,whichcanbemadebyanyhandyman.

AfurtherinventionofJim'sishisexhaustvalve lifter,madeparticularlyforVWengines.Thefirst requirementisforaglassresinmouldofthetwo cylinderheadcavities,forwhicheversizeVWengine youareusing.Thesearemadequitesimplybyfollowingtheusualdirectionsforusingfibreglass,which doesnotinfactcementitselftothemothershape. Thesearepre-fixedtoasmallpieceofplywood. OntopofthiswecannowplacetheVWcylinderhead fromwhichwerequiretoremovethevalves.Itwillhe obvioustoourreadersthatwiththesefibreglassinserts underneath,itisnotpossibleforthevalvesthemselves todepress.Therefore,wearenowinapositionto depressthevalvesprings.withoutth.evalvesthemselvesdescending.Jimhasdesignedasmallangleiron benchmountingwhich_sits on thebenchandholdsup thehorizontalbaF,rotatingaboutwhichisaleveralso asithappens,inthisparticularcase,inangleiron. Thusthebarcanberotatedaboutitsverticalaxis butalsocanbemovedalongthehorizontalaxisto eachandeveryvalvespringonthecylinderhead Theprinciplethusisthatwiththecylinderheadon thefibreglassblock,eachspringcanbedepressedin turnwithacylindricalspacerheldoverit,whichas thephotoshows,hassufficientmaterialcutawayfor extractionofthecotterpin.Thisisindeedaunique wayofremovingandreplacingthevalvesandseems alotbetterthansomeofthemethodswehaveseen usedbyamateurs.Ratheralotofequipmentyou maythink,todoasmalljob.Thismaybesoifthe engineyouareconsertingistheonlyoneyouever intendtodo,butanyonewhoanticipates'messing about'withVWenginesitcouldbequiteauseful accessory.

strongelementofhome-madeflavourhereisbest representedbyhishome-madejigsaw—yes,homemade.Ajigsawisaveryusefulassettoanyworkshop anduntilyouhavegotoneyoudon'trealisewhatyou aremissing!Therearebigones,smallones,allofthem mostlyexpensiveones.However,Jimhasovercome theexpensewithhishome-madeone,consfiacted frombitsofRSJandpiecesofangleiron.Wecouldn't begintodescribesuchatool,muchlessgiveaconstructionalseriesofhow Lo produceanotherone,but itcertainlydoesgiveOnefoodforthoughtonwhot canbeaccomplished.OurphotoFig.5showsa generalviewofthebitsofmetalhehassseldedand

boltedtogether.Allwecansayisthatitseemstowork verywellindeedandhemustbeacoupleofhundred poundsbetteroffforhishome-madeeffortsthanthose ofuswhohavetogooutandbuyitreadymade.It looksHeathRobinsonbut,believeyoume,asonewho hasseenit,itworkswell.Theresurelyisthespiritof ouradventurer.

Finally,IthinkFshouldtellyouthatheisalso registeredasabuilderoftheVPl.FromwhatIhave toldyou,Ithinkyouwillrealiseitisprettycertain,or highlyunlikely,thatJimWilleverbuildanaeroplane, becauseheissokeenonfindingwaystodothings betterintermsoftools,jigs;andwhat-have-you'sthat hewillprobablyneverreachtheendproduct.However,fullpowertohiselbow,becausethesearejust thepeopleweneedinthePFA,whoaredesigning thingsthataregoingtomakethefutureaeroplanes easiertobuild.Finallyabouthisforaysintothe actualbuildingoftheaeroplane.Hewasoneofthe firsttostartontheVPIprojectandinfacthadclose EasonwithJohnDunfordintheVPsquadronofthe earlydays.Hewassaddenedthough,whenhemade hisfirsttwobulkheadsfromDouglasfiraccordingto Americanspecification.Hebroughtthesealongto Sywelltoexhibitandloandbehold,whenhegotthem outofthebootofhiscartheyhadallcracked.There isnowPFAengineeringadvicetoallwould-beVP1 builders,thatwhereDouglasfirisspecified,use Spruce.ThisisbecausetheDouglasfiravailablein thiscountryisnothinglikethespecificationofDouglas firintheUnitedStates,andJimwasoneofthefirstto discoverthereasonswhy.Havingbuiltthesetwo bulkheadsandspentallthattime,hewasalittle disillusionedatfirst,anddespiteapileofDouglasfir inhisworkshop,hasnonethelessdecidedtocarryon withthePFAorientatedinvestigationswhichweare allhappytosee.

"R.A.E.Cosfordhasbeenco-operativewiththe WestMidlandStrut,whohaveacquiredpermission tousethestationasaflyingbaseinreturnforhelping themuseumthere".

Sadly,thereisnotagrainoftruthinthisreport, whichhasprobablyitsoriginfrominaccuratelyrecordedminutesofourmeetingheldatSywellon2nd April.Thosemimitesread:

ThefollowingflashbackastotheAssociation'searly historymaybeofinteresttoourmembers.

In1947,asmallgroupofenthusiasts(RonClegg, MauriceandIanImrayandmyself)gottoaetherwith theaimofrevivinginterestinprivateflyingwhichhad perforceceasedtofunctionduringthewar.Tomake flyingcheapenoughtobewithinthereachofyoung enthusiasts,wedecidedtosponsortheconstruction andoperationofultralightaircraft,andsofounded theUltraLightAircraftAssociation.

WeweresuccessfulinournegotiationswiththeAir RegistrationBoardtoexemptultralightaircraftfrom theexpenseandcomplicationofC.ofA.requirements. ItwasagreedtheycouldflywithintheU.K.subjectto theissueofaPermittobegrantedonthetechnical recommendationoftheAssociation.ThisPermit systemwasauthorisedforultralightaircraftwhich werethendefinedforthepurposeasbeingunder 1,000lbs.all-upweight,withenginesoflessthan 40h.p.andwithalandingspeednotexceeding 40m.p.h.

Lateron,theAssociationbegantosponsorthe formationofco-ownershipflyinggroups,andpersuadedtheauthoritiestoallowsuchgroupstooperate theiraircraftasjointprivateowners.Unlikethe proprietaryflyingclubs,whoseoperationswereclassed as"forhireandreward"andwhosemaintenancehad tobeonthepublictransportbasis,ourco-ownership groupscouldoperateintheprivateflyingcategoryat consequentlymuchlesscost.Oneoftheleadinglights whotookanactivepartinstartingthisco-ownership groupschemewasLewisBenjamin,whoformeda grouptooperateaMagisteratShoreharnAerodrome.

"Benjie"isstillamostactiveflyingenthusiast,andis nowVice-ChairmanoftheTigerClubandproduces theirpopular "TigerRag" journaleverymonth.

Variousgroupsbegantoformalloverthecountry andwereaffiliatedtotheAssociation,buttheynearly alloperatedTigerMothsorMaggiesboughtex-R.A.F. whichwerewelloutsidetheultralightclassasdefined. Thesegroupsbecamemoreandmoreimportantto ourorganisation,andlatein1950whilstIwasChairmanoftheAssociation,wedecidedtochangeour titleto PopularFlyingAssociation tocoverthesegroup activitiesinadditiontotheconstructionandoperation ofultralightaircraft.

Everydecadehasitsfashions.Thingsinvogue todaywillbethekissofdeathtothefashion-conscious intenyearstime.Duringthetwentiesandthirtiesit wasfashionableformakersofqualitygoodstoaffixa trademarktotheirproductssothatthepubliccould atonceestablishtheirwares.Automobiiemakershad elaboratebadgesor"escutcheons,astheywere known,fixedtotheradiatorsoftheirmotorcars.and itwasthesamewiththelightaeroplanemanufacturers ofthatperiod.

Havingdesignedandbuiltanaircrafttheyemblazoneditwithtransfersofthecompanytrademark. Someofthesetransfersofthethirtieswereofaconsiderablesizeandcomplexity.Unfortunately,unlike themotorcarescutcheonswhichwereofmetaland colouredenamels(andthusverypermanent),the aircrafttrademarkswereephemeral,for,atthefirst CofArespraytheydisappearedforeverbeneatha freshcoatofdope.

Forthetruevintageaircraftenthusiastwhowishes torestorehismachinetoitsoriginal"asnew-condition,theseoldcompanytrademarktransferscause quiteaproblembecausetheyareunobtainable,and thereforehehastoproduceafacsimilebythebest meansavailable.RaymondBlain,ownerofthe beautifulone-and-onlySpartanArrowG-ABWPrelatedhisproblemsinthisareaduringtheP.F.A. DinneratSywellinJuly.

AftercollectingmanyphotographsofSpartan Arrowaircrafttakeninthethirtiesliewasdisappointed tofindthatfewshowedtheSpartantrademarkand nonewereclearenoughtomakeanaccuratecopyof thedesign.Alwaysacollector,Raymondhadthegood

fortunetocomeacrossanoldSpartanSalesBrochure andtohisgreatdelighthediscovereddiecompany trademarkresplendentinredandgoldontheheading page.Thisgavehimthefinalpiecesofinformationhe required—shapeandcolour.Withoutdelayhesetup hiscameraandcopiedthedesignontofilmwhichhe thenenlargedtothecorrectsize,cleanedfromthe aircraftphotographstakeninthethirties.Although thesewerenotsharpenoughfordetailtheyfurnished sizeandlocation.Raymondthentooktheenlareement andoriginaltoaprofessionalartistwhodrewupthe designinred,gold.blackandwhiteontogum-based transfermaterial.Theexcellentresultscanbejudged byanyonefortunateenoughtoseeG-ABWPatany VintageClubmeeting.Theredandgoldmotifenhancesandcomplimentsthepaleblueandwhite colourschemeofthislovelyoldbiplane.

Anothermethodemployedbyvintageenthusiaststo reproducetheseoldaircrafttrademarksistopaintthe designontoasheetofclear'fablon'usingthewell knownenamelssoldinthosetinytinsforaeromodellers.Althoughnotfortransfer,theFablonsheet issothinthatitsedgeishardlynoticeable,andprovidingthesurfaceisthoroughlycleanitwillstick firmlytoanyaircraftfabric.Acoatofclearlacquer aroundtheoutsidetosealtheedgescompletesthejob.

Anunofficialjobwaspresentedtothedesignteamof AirspeedLtd.atChristchurchonedayin1949.Their testpilot,RonaldClear,intendedtoracehisComper Swiftthefollowingyearandwantedasetofwheel spatstoenhanceitsspeed.ExistingComperspats designedinthethirtieswerereallyonlyglorified mud-guardsandtheirshapeprobablydidlittle,ifany, toimprovetheairflowaroundtheundercarriage.

TheAirspeedBoyscameupwithacompletelynew answer—aspatwhichalmostenvelopedthenew 6x600wheel,andwithalengthofmorethantwice thediameter.Theleadingedgewasconventionalbut thetrailingedgehookedsharplydownwardwherethe airflowpassedunderthewingliftstrutarea.Novel, butveryefficient.Whenthespatsweremadeupand fitted,RonClear'sComporSwift(G-ACTF)came fifthinthefollowingyear's DailyExpressRace- not badfora1932aircraftandonly75h.p.!

RonClearpassedthespatdesignontoJohn PothecaryduringthesixtieswhenJohnwasrebuilding G-ABUU.JohnhadpurchasedhisSwiftfrom ChristopherBlandin1962andrecallsthatChriswas suchabigfellow(631and17stone)thatliehadto removehisbootstoEtinthecockpit.

AftercompletelyrebuildingG-ABULl,John PothecarywontheGrosvenorCupin1969andhis successisrecordedinPutman's RecordandPacing AircralE'. Thistimethespeedspatsweremadeoffibre glassandbeautifullylight.Theairflowwasfurther improvedbysheatInngthemetalundercarriagelegs withfibreglassstreamlinesectionsandapartfrom speed,justforsheerlook,John'sComperSwiftis outstanding.Withapowderblueandwhitecolour scheme,trimmedwithgoldlining,thelittleaircraft

gavethesunlitflightlineatSywelladistinctlyracy flavour.Nodoubtaboutit,thespeedspatscomplete theSwift'sfeathers.

Recentproposedlegislationregardingchangesin liabilitytothirdparties,asdiscussedinthelastpieceof 'GroupNews',haspromptedmanygroupstoexamine theprosandconsofformingthemselvesintobinned LiabilityCompanies.Somegroupshavegoneastage furtherandtakentheplunge.Obviouslythereare manypointstobeconsidered,nottheleastofwhich isthecostofformingthecompanyandtEeextrawork involvedinkeepingproperauditedaccounts;aswell asconsiderationofthestatusofthemembers.How dotheystand?Whataretheirrightsandobligations?

Inafutureissuewehopetodetailasmanypointsas possibleonthissubject,toanswersomeofthe numerousenquirieswehavealreadyreceived.We wouldliketoheartheexperiencesofthosegroups whohavealreadyformedthemselvesintocompanies. Thebeginningofthegroupreallystartedin1975, whenfourofus,allmembersofShropshireAeroClub atSleapairfieldinShropshire,agreedthatS.A.Cs. "TinTrikes"werenotforus;norforthatmatterwas £13or£14perhour.Forlong,clubmembershad beenpleadingforaproperaeroplaneforPPLsto fly.Thecommittee'sanswerwasanicenew150Aerobat,which,incidentlytheclub'sinstructorspromptly grabbedfor'circuitbashing'.Themessagewasclear, ifwewantedtofly"realaeroplanes"wemustprovide ourown.Afterareasonableamountofalcoholhad beenconsumedoneeveningattheclubbar,aplanof campaignwashatched.FirstanapproachtoS.A.Cs. managementcommitteetoreceivetheirapproval;not atasktobelightlyundertakeninviewoftheirprevious attitudetogroupsandallthingsP.F.A.Anyway,with aweffireasonedcase,andthethoughtsinsomeoftheir mindsthatwewouldprobablygettiredofthescheme

andabandonitlongbeforecompletion,assomany othershadinthepast,wefinallygotthe"go-ahead".

Therewerefourofusatthestart,DaveLofts,Geoff Robinson,MikeRoulstonandmyselfItwasagreed thatDave.GeoffandIshouldprovideasuitable hangarandMike,whohadincidentlyrecentlysold hisRalleyClub,wouldprovideasuitableaircraft.To startwithwewereinluck.Sometwoyearspreviously, TheHobsonFlyinggroupfromWolverhamptonhad obtainedapprovaltoerectahangarandoperatetheir Austeratffieap.Theyhadstartedtoerecttheframeworkofa"Romney"typebuildingandhadattempted toextendthespanbyputtingextrasteelworkbetween eachofthecircularhoopframes.thusflatteningthe topofthebuilding.Thiswasnotlikelytobesuccessful andtheprojectwasabandonedforthisorother reasonsatanearlystageofconstructionandIunderstand,theyfounda"home"atR.A.F.Cosford.Well, theirlosswasourgain.Igotintouchwiththeirsecretaryanddidadealwithhim.Forthesumof£20.00 Ipurchasedallthesteelworkandanenormousstack oftimberandothermaterials;averitible"Alladin's caveoftreasures".Workstartedalmostimmediately. First,theframeshadtobetakendownandreduced totheiroriginalwidth.Apartfromengineeringand structuralreasonsthishadthebenefitofmakingthe thebuilding"CessnaProof".Youmaylaugh,but duringthecourseofconstruction,many,manypeople wereobservedsneakingawayfromsitewindingup tapemeasuresandwearingdisappointedexpressions ontheirfaces.Therewasmethodinourmadness! Towardstheendoftheprojectwhichtooknearlythe entire-yeartocomplete;westartedhavingthoughts ofinvitingafewmoreofourfriendstojointhegroup, whenweeventuallygotaroundtoformingit.Inthe meantime,MikeRoulstonannouncedthathehad 'twistedKenDavies'sarmuphisbackandboughthis

Minicabfromhim-.Monthswentbyandstillthe hangarwasnotready,andallthetimeMikewas payinghangararechargesatLiverpoolfortheMinicab.Thisapart,hewasnottoohappyabouttheall-up weightoftheaircraftwhenoccupiedbytwoofthe "betterfed"members;sohesolditbacktoits orignialowner.Sad,really.Inevergottoflyinit... hint,hint(IHOPEYOUAREREADINGTHIS DAVEGREENWOOD)...Bythemiddleof1976, the"PlanePagoda-wasatlastcompletedbutalas, therewas'nowt'toputinit.

EnMay1976,itwasdecidedthatwewouldneed moremembersifweweretospreadthecostburdenof operatinganaircraft,togetherwithitspurchaseprice inah.nancially.relativelypainlessmanner.Therehad alwaysbeenashortlistoflikelycandidatesintheback ofourminds,andthesepeoplewereapproachedand thefactsputbeforethem.i.e.estimatedsharecost, monthlyfixedcharges,possiblegrouprules,etc.Four peopleaccepted,bringingournumberuptoeight. ThefirstmeetingofthenewgrouptookplaceinMay lastyearat"Squire-Emberton'shouseinthevillage ofClive,fromwhichthegrouptakesitsname.The purposeofthemeetingwastodrinkthecontentsof the"Squire's-cabinet,smokehisduty-freecigars, agreeon.somegrouprules(basedontheP.F.A.model rules),signbankformsandhandoverourchequesfor theshares.Strictlyinthatorder, it wasamostenjoyableevening(Ithink).

Thesearchforanaircraftlookanewsenseof in-gency.Ithadtobea_lode]withnotntorethantwo seats.Wewereluckyagain,forwithinfourweekswe foundG-AXNJatDunkcswellinapparentlyexcellent condition,havingbeenrebia,moreorless,in1975. Adealwasdone,andonthe23rdofJune1976, accordingtomylogbook,atISIShrs.Itookofffront DunkeswellboundforSleaponwhatprovedan interestingflight.Itwasalmost10yearssinceIhad lasthadcontrolofatwoseatlodel,andIwastrying hardtoremembertheirvariouslittlepeculaiHes.I wassoontolearnthatthisonehadafewofitsown. Online-upIdiscoveredthattheradiohadceasedto l'CceiVe,andontheclimb,Inotedthattheengine seemedtowoikverywellwitha'dry'petroltank— well,accordingtothegauge!Onceinlevelflight,I disco‘ered thatnotonlydidtheelectricalinstruments not NIork.butalsotheA.S.I.-andtheDA.precessed inamostalarmingmanner.Onopeningthe‘entilator paneltheairspeedincreasedbyknots(what..nexcellentidea—ifyoustall,don'tbothertoputthestick forward,simplyopentheventilator)....Suchaie thelessonstobelearnedbythekeenaeroplanebuyer. annoyances,theflightwasmostenjoyable.Ihadthe moralcomfortofasmallhelicopterforcompanyasI crossedtheBristolchannel,believeme,it'sahellofa lotof"OGGIN-tocrosswithnolifebeltandasuspectaircraft.Thehelicopterveeredofftowards CardiffandIcontinuedoncoursetoNewportdoks, thenceviaHerefordtoviewthecathedralfronttheair andontoSLEAP.Theonlythoughtsthatbothered inefromthenonwascouldIstilllandthedarned thing?Atleast.Itoldmyself.1shallhaveattempted tosucceedandtheywillonlyhavethemselvestoblame fortrustingmewiththeir-,7.jsharewhilstmyismine todoasIlikedwith.Whatalousyattitude!The landingasithappenedwasunspectacularandsafe.I wasgladtopeelmystickycarcaseofftheseatand makefortheclubhouseatspeed.Neverhadapint tastedbetter.

TheTailwindhadn'treachedtheholdingpointbefore theheaviestshower or :hetwodaystreateditLoareal monsoon-likedrenching.Withinabout10minutesthe cloudshadclearedtotheeastandwesawbluesky againasJohnandhiscompanionliftedofffortheir returnnighttoYorkshire.Wewerestillgetting20kt, windsatI6.00,so sadly setaboutstrikingcamp.

BLACKPOOL

TheBlackpooleventwasoneofthosemajor aviationmeetings,thathadbeendeclaredasartevent supportedbyPFAthisyear.And,assuch,Headquartersshouldhavemanagedourrepresentation. However,asithappened,theNorth-WestStrutwere leftinisolationtopresentthePEA'face'andwhata magnificentjobtheydid.Asmostofyouareaware. HQsufferedproblemsoverthereplacementbusand then,haditbeenavailable,adriverpreparedtotakeit allthewaytoBlackpoolhadnotemerged,soperhaps theycanbeforgivenfornotfollowingupthepromising start.

However,theNWStruthadmadeplans—very comprehensiveplans,thatdidnotpre-supposeHQ help.Theirteam,ledbyErnieHorsfall,producedover theprecedingmonthsquiteawadofstereo-typed sheetsintheformofadvancedplans,timetables,job requirementsandstandspecifications.Acompleteset ofthesewerehandedtomeatthePageantandwhata completeguidetheyformfortheplanningofaPEA event!Everyaspectdowntosignwritingdimensions, weretakencareofSo,enoughfortheplanning.here's ourstory.

PFMagazinesentuptoBlackpoolarepresentative torecordthehappeningsandneverbeforehadwe realisedtheextentoftheenthusiasmofthemembershipupthere.ItseemsthattheStrut,basedonBarton. Manchester,hasabout90members,ofwhomapprox. 50arehomebuilding.ThisStrut,then,providednot onlytheworkforce,butalsotheorganisationand hardwareforthePFApresentationatBlackpool, about20airmilesaway.

Thegrounddisplay,apartfromalotofhard-worked signsandlogos,includedamagnificentVWconversionbyDaveHunterinverymuch'display'con-

dition,completeongroundstand—verymuchadmired.AlsoaGardanMiniCabfuselagereadyfor covering;aTaylorMonolikewiseandthenewly weldedupfuselageframeforaBabyGreatLakes, whichhadtaken,sofar,sixweeks.Insidethemarquee wasacine-projectorshowingSywellandotherPEA interests,alsoaclosedcircuitTVmonitorshowinga videotapeofscenestakenearlierintheday.Thewhole oftheorganisationofthisgrounddisplaywasinthe handsofDavidDunn,whowastobeseenonevery side,encouraginghere,pushingthere,butalways finishingwithresults.

JohnKirkhamwasdoingaverygoodjob,silting ratheraloneinanisolatedtentonthePFASite, bookinginandoutthevisitingPFAaircraft,not makingalotoffussaboutit,butneverthelessableto supplyPFwithaverycompletelistof'whodonewo( intheflypasts.Thankyou,John.

WeweretakenovertotheoppositesideoftheairportandusheredintoaNissenhut,remarkablebyits tidiness;andhere,incontrolledatmosphereconditions wasanotherprojectunderway.Nolessanenterprise thantheVari-ezebeingconstructedbyGeorge Thornhill,MikeSharpiesandJackCattle.

Therewasverymuchinevidencethekindofconstructionconditionsforglassfibre/resinconstruction thatF.I.V.Walkerhasbeeninsistingon.Thermometer,hygrometer,dust-freeatmosphereandsoon. Tinsofbarriercream,bottlesofchemicals,allthings quitestrangetoourpreviousknowledgeofaircraft construction.

Todescribewhattheyaredoingwouldrequirea separatetechnicalarticle,sothere'sthehint,boys, let'sgetallourmembersclueduponglassresinwork.

JohnRichardson,theRotter,haddisappearedto Francefortheweekendonaso-called'course'(don't knowthesubject!)andlefthischarmingwife,Joan, tofulfilapromiseshehadmadetotheStrut,many monthsago,todothePFABlackpoolcatering,in innocenceofJohn'sproposedabsence.John'slosswas ourgain.YourPFrep.waskeptsuppliedwithtea, wadsandeverythingwithchips,aswerealltheworkers andvisitors.ChairmanBobHarperandwifePhylis wereseenonSundayintwocanvaschairs,sittingback inluxury,enjoyinggiantplatesof'chipswitheverything'.Joanhadseveralback-uphelps,whosenames wedidnotcollect,butwethinkthatMrs.Erniehada littletodowithit.

Finally,theflypast.WewitnessedErnie'sPFA Pilots'briefingwhichseemedverysuccinct.He(and we)weresurprisedatthenumberofradioequipped A/Cthatwereonpresentation,ithavingbeenassumed thatmostwouldbenonradio.Weseefromthe itineraryofresponsibilitiesthatIanJennisonwasto havedonethisflypastorganisation,butperhapsthere wassomechangeofplanhere.

Athoroughlydetailedbriefingatsuchaneventis essentialandthistimeitseemedthatitgotthe attentionthatisdeemednecessary.

TheFlypastwassuccessfullyoperatedonboth SaturdayandSundayand•aswellcommentated on byJohnBlake.Somefeltthattheuseoftwenty machinesleftalittletobedesiredfromthesafetypoint ofview,butperhapsitwasnotthenumbers,butthe ulnaeoftheirspeedandsizethatdeservedmore consideration.Afterall,thepilotofaNipper.taking ofTthreeabreastandfindinghimselfintheslipstream ofanAusterdeadahead,wasjustifiablyalarmed. However,allwentwellanditisonlybyexperiencing minorhiccupslikethis,thatwecanimproveonwhat

mustsurelyhavebeenanearunimprovablepresentationofPEAbyNWStrut.Welldone,lads!

Aninterestinainnovation,foraPEAevent,was RobinLloydwithhisclosedcircuitTVsetup,which usedvideotapetomakeahalfhourfilmofthe morning'sevents,tobeshown,aswesaidearlier,in themarqueeintheafternoon.Thiswasaunique facilitynotfullyexploited,wefelt,duetolackofprior foresightandplanning.Apity.butnofaultonRobin's part.

At16,35hrstherewasafive-minutebreakinthe displayprogrammeforthedepartureonscheduled serviceofBIAHeraldforManchesterandGatwick. Aboardwasyourscribe,takingbacktoPFAHQa glowingaccountoftheenthusiasmandwork,asitwas allhappening,intheNorthWest.

ANNUALSUBSCRIPTIONS

TheAnnualSubscriptionoftheAssociationwas increasedto£7.50onthe1stJanuary1976.Atthat timememberswhopaidbyBankers'Orderwereasked toadvisetheirBankstoamendthepaymentfrom £5.50to£7-50.Alargenumberofmembersfailedto doso,andinconsequencehadtobeadvisedindividuallyduring1976whentheirBankscontinued tomakepaymentsof£5-50.

Now,18monthslater,inspiteofthesereminders,a considerablenumberofmembers'Banksarecontinuingtomakepaymentsof£5.50,andIwouldonce againappealtoallmemberswhopaybyBankers' PopularFlying,SePtemher-October,1977
