Jewelry Museum Integrating museum and performance spaces Project type- Public Site- Atlanta

Instructor- Prof. John Peponis Fall 2020 D + R Studio

The design explores the idea of performance spaces as a key part of the museum and its display. Given the urban context of the site, a space like this will enhance the museum experience and engage the community. This idea is carried into the design of the gallery spaces as well, where interjecting planes overlook into the adjacencies. This creates various moments where some of the exhibits remain hidden to the user, to be explored almost like a treasure hunt, some are in plain sight, and some are visible from different levels of the galleries. As the user moves through, these exhibits reveal themselves and this play of movement mimics an elaborate performance that the user has unknowingly become a part of.

Range analysis is done using space syntax softwares for all the levels of the museum, positioned at the entrance to the galleries to understand the visibility of the exhibits and the space. This arrangement creates various moments where some of the exhibits remain hidden to the visitor, some are in plain sight, and some are visible from different levels of the galleries. The ramp also acts as a viewing deck and provides interesting views into the gallery spaces, as the visitor goes up or down. The isovists map out the visibility from the vantage points (marked in red) and provide insights as to how the curatorial experience of the musuem can be designed.

The Box A branch library in South Downtown Atlanta Project type- Public Site- Atlanta

Instructor- Prof. Charles Rudolph Spring 2020 Design Studio

The intent of the project was the radical reuse of existing materials ensuring a minimal carbon impact with a focus on regenerative architecture. The H.L Green Building, a deco-modern masonry-clad structure in Atlanta was the setting of this project. Having served as a historic Five-and-Dime store for years, the building is currently in a dilapidated inhabitable condition. The brief was to design a public library to contribute to the society along with a community spaces like a gallery/ exhibition space to engage the community.

division of building based on function

opening up the space to the community

adding materiality

This studio project explores regenerative building, an approach to the conception, design development, and technical specification of architecture that seeks to radically reduce its consumption of raw material and nonrenewable energy resources throughout the building life cycle and reshape design practice to ameliorate the current degradation of global environmental health.

design considerations

Since the building had an existing basement, the key move was to open it up by using that space as a community amphitheater. The indoor lecture hall and the amphitheater share a common stage, divided by a wall of foldable acoustical panels, which can be closed for an event/ screening/ lecture or can be opened up to a massive interactive space for a performance/ play or any other community engagement program.

The scheme combines both- the old and the new; by retaining part of the original structure to house the ancilliary functions of the brief while retrofitting the ‘new function’ i.e the library in form of an insertion. The choice of material further enforces the juxtaposition between the old- the existing brick masonry and the new- the mass timber box The proposed design also takes into consideration the new material that is being brought into the system and what part of the existing structure is being reused and recycled. Material accountability helps to understand whether the source materials have been efficiently adapted into the new design.

90% of the existing structural columns reused (I sections from the demolished part have been used for the new floors)

Brick masonry walls and concrete retained for the gallery building

Existing structure CMU blocks reused for the Broad St building

Mass timber and CLT Panels introduced and used for the library box

Existing glass repurposed for the glazing and new glass introduced

Kent State Center for Architecture + Environmental Design Project type- Group work Instructor- Prof. Marble Construction Tech & Design Integration II| Spring 2020 The focus of the assignment was to capture the formal, operational and constructabe relationships and dependendencies between the various building systems of a contemporary casestudy in a digital 3D model. Phases of the assignment focussed on research, data collection and analysis of the building and then building a detailed Rhino model of specific subject areas, using the building’s construction documents as the primary resource to develop a full understanding of the architectural, structural systems along with the construction methods, materials and assemblies.

The whole structural system was studied to understand the construction and materialty. The building was divided further to understand the structural details of a particular area. The drawing shown here breaks down the strutural layout right from the foundation to the slabs and roof system. The details shown next flesh out the entire buildup right from the insulation to the external brick masonry cladding. (All the drawings shown here are from the portion which was under my scope of work. These were produced referring to the CDs made available to us.)

Decoding the Bird’s Nest Beijing National Stadium Project type- Group work Instructor- Prof. Park ARCH 8833| Media and Modeling Fall 2019 Through the course of this project, we studied the Beijing National Stadium and its underlying geometry, 2D schemata and how the 3D form evolves. Based on this investigation and analysis, iterations and optimized design solutions were proposed by analyzing the shade/ shadow patterns and solar radiation studies. (using Rhino and Ladybug softwares) I worked on analyzing the outer skeleton and how the secondary column grid fits into it and the iterations for shade and shadow optimization studies.

African School Project Project type- Competition entry

Site- Malawi, Africa

The competition proposal was to design a secondary school in Benga (Malawi). The main challenge of the program was to not only design learning spaces but to integrate it with sustainable systems and to adapt using local materials, easy constructive systems and energetic technologies in order to make the proposal realistic and efficient.
