(Group project in collaboration with Simran Bajaj) The growth of a city can be seen as functions of space and time. The physical progression of its form over a certain period of time shapes the city and its evolution. This scheme takes the concept of a growing city and intersects it within a 3d grid ; a system that not only infuences the growth but almost controls and directs it. Visualizing a city that operates on a set system of rules derived from a seriers of game moves results in the gamification of this process of growth and progression. This city starts off with a 3D grid derived from a 2D playing field from the Lancaster house. This projects explores how from a baseline plan of a mansion in London, the poche can be used and altered to fit the scale of a city
2D to 3D Game development
3-D City | Space, time and Growth
This city starts off with a 3D grid derived from a 2D playing field from the Lancaster house. The blocks, extrapolated as 3D forms from the variety of rooms in the Lancaster house form an exhaustive kit-of-parts. Further, these blocks have been adapted and evolved to suite the unique needs of this 3D City. The spatial and the structural elemnts have been merged to create these forms that are now ready to get added in the city. A city is not only an aggregationof individual spaces but also of the collective; the public spaces. Here, the public spaces emerge as a response to the growing needs of the city. The public space might seem like a 2D area but it is infact an intangible poche of the 3D form. In a way, this city is both; a living machine and a design machine. A design machine that influences and sets the framework for growth; and a living machine because it almost takes over the blocks and acts as a driving force in this act of progression.

3-D City | System, growth and development 1. The initial 2D playing field of the game is carried into the scheme and acts as a 3D grid system for the city to develop into. 2. The grid consists of the main structural system and the intermidiate structural system that materialize for the blocks to attach onto 3. Selected blocks from the kit-of-parts, now evolved to adapt into this 3D system are added and placed at desired location 4. The 3D grid further supplies additional grid support to the blocks and the resolution of the city increases. 5. Public spaces emerge as a response to the addition of these blocks. this includes connecting bridges, platforms, elevators and escalators 6. Further development occurs ensuring a minimum of 1 & maximum of 3 grid distance from the existing blocks to ensure a control in density & growth
