1.0 THE OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL CENTER P R O J E C T : C U LT U R A L LOCATION : CHICAGO,USA

While researching the history of Chicago and digging deeper into the south-side, where the Obama Presidential Center is proposed site, there is a huge history to reflect on and a history to be made. We live in a world where a lot of social, economical, political issues are happening around us such as discrimination, climate change. In his book “Palaces for the People”, author Eric Klinenberg wonders why people lose their lives in specific neighborhoods, such as Englewood on the South Side of Chicago, at 10 times the rate of those who live in other neighborhoods? Why there is a huge gap between different groups of people? He states that “The explanation had to do with social infrastructure. The social Infrastructure is the missing piece of the puzzle, and building palaces where all kinds of people can gather is the best way to repair the fractured societies we live in today.”( Klinenberg, 2018) Design, in general, plays an important role in bringing us together and shaping our future. The Obama Presidential Center will be a place for education and celebration; for creating jobs and providing economic opportunities; and a place where current tensions are resolved in new ways.

“So much of black life in Chicago happens in Washington Park even if you are from the West Side or the North Side, it is hard not to find yourself there at least once each summer. The African Festival of the Arts, the Bud Billiken Parade, and family barbecues all find a home in the massive park.” (Ewing, 2020)

The walking path, which is cutting through the building, is creating a similar experience to the little back streets and small lanes that gives you a cozy feeling when you are walking between the buildings.

The main change we did to the existing academic building is we relocate the community center from the north side to the south side to be connected visually and physically to the public square. THE PROPOSED ACADEMIC BUILDING PROGRAM

There is a strong relationship between the existing building’s wall. They are almost creating a space between them that should be invested.

By locating the Obama Presidential Center (OPC) Parallel to the school building, we’re creating a Place “ The Public Square” In terms of a sense of a place, we need to make the public square safe and comfortable for people to stay and socialize. While many factors contribute to the comfort of a place the most significant is its degree of architectural enclosure-the amount that it makes its inhabitants feel held within a space. By having the continuous three walls of the buildings with well-defined edges, we are containing the square which will attract people to be in that place to enhance the social infrastructure; that’s a sense of place.

Washington Park has a lot of walking paths around the site, and one of the main paths is cutting through the Obama presidential Center site. Although we have a specific program, we didn’t want the building to change the existing people’s norm of the park. Instead, we made the people’s norm shaping the architecture.

Additional to the path cutting through the building we added a secret garden which will be an addition to the park experience. Moreover, the secret garden will work as a courtyard for the buildings and will provide more natural daylighting and natural ventilation for the building’s program.

To enhance the special experience through the secret garden, the buildings curtain walls were manipulated horizontally to create even more organic and smooth experience.

Adding a perforated double skin facade which will reduce the direct solar radiation to the glass building.

The secret garden will work as a semi public space, which will divide the building into two (north and south) independent zones .

At the corner of west side of the building, we added a vertical circulation element to connect the park visitors to the surroundings.

Adding the green roof will work as a thermal insulation and provide a roof top garden that allows the community to socialize and explore different vistas of Washington Park.

DIN G

The exterior envelope will be a curtain wall system and covered with a Perforated double skin system which will allow for a controlled visual connection between the interior and exterior spaces. The building’s perforated double skin will be inspired by the craftsmanship and the arts of the local African American community.

THE OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL CENTER (NORTH-EAST FACADE)

3D Perspective of the Obama Presidential Center inspired by the site and the Public Square.

THE PUBLIC SQUARE ( NORTH FACADE) The Public Square is a form of social infrastructure by creating a live scene in the middle of the site. It has a great impact on its surroundings and the power to bring people from different backgrounds to celebrate and socialize the formal and informal events. The Public Square is a multi-purpose space which can be utilized by the local communities to gather or to have their local market. Also, it can be used in the winter as a sledding land to enjoy the snow and the nice weather.

The Secret Garden

In addition to the walking path that gives the similar experience of the little back streets and the small lanes that make people feel cozy. The sunken secret garden is another form of social infrastructure to bring people together. Besides its environmental features, (provide natural daylighting and ventilation), we designed the secret garden to be sunken in order to create a sense of curiosity and mystery within the park experience.

The3idea behind the building skin is to celebrate the struggles and the achievements of the local African American community. Ideally, we ELEVATION 3 would let the local community participate in designing the pattern of the skin which they feel best expresses their culture in this context. In our project, we used FAWOHODIE is one of the Adinkra symbols from West Africa. The symbol is used on cloths and metalwork and represents:

We used many different research methods to help us understanding the psychological and physical atmosphere of the space. Such as Interviews, surveys and space analysis. We found the most important issues of the office to address them while designing our proposals .

PHASE II : DESIGN PROPOSAL

In this phase we started design by thinking of our Design Parti through design guidelines and look and feel board. Then, we started the schematic and design phase of our proposal.

BRING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE The main principle behind biophilia is rather simple: connecting humans with nature to improve well-being The main strategy is to bring characteristics of the natural world into built spaces, such as water, greenery, natural light, elements like wood (where the grain is visible) and stone “Is the link to all that makes up earth and its ecosystems from textures, features, patterns, and systems.” When people hear the term biophilia they usually immediately think of plants. Nature is not composed of just organic parts, but also inorganic parts such as stones and systems of patterns in river and lighting formation.

WOOD The exposure to the natural environment positively impacts human health and well-being, both physical and psychological • Lower stress levels • Improve attention and focus • Greater creativity • Quicker recovery • Reduced pain perception

PUBLIC SPACES BRING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE The public spaces of the HIDA office of student success such as the entryway, reception area and the waiting area, designed in a way to make them welcoming, multi-functional and accommodate the ADA requirements. The entryway is the perfect space to brand the identity of HIDA before entering the suite, and adding a display wall to display students’ artwork and student swag added so much to the space. The other space is the waiting area, in this proposal we wanted to create a multi-functional space for not only the visitors to use it, but also for the staff to use it during the day for socializing or just changing their work space . Here is the MoodBoard of the public spaces. Since we are using the biophilic design idea, the best way to achieve it is by using the materials and colors. We used the wood as the main material and its colors to enhance the biophilia atmosphere inside the space. While the touches from nature used to be the secondary selection of materials and colors such as Terrazzo flooring (stones) and the colors as a branding technique. The type of furniture we used in the public spaces are modern style from SteelCase. This type of furniture is flexible; you can rearrange the pieces of furniture as you like.

HIDA

OFFICE

PROJECT: OFFICES LO C AT I O N : T E M P E , A Z

FLEX-SPACE BRING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE WHAT IS THE FLEX SPACE ? Flex space is a space for students to work, socialize and have fun. To make the space visually accessible to the ones who are sitting in the waiting area, we added a glass wall in between to let them see what is going on inside the space. The flex space divided into three main zones : •The collaboration zone •The lounge zone •The private zone This is the MoodBoard of the Flex Space. We wanted to make the flex space different from the offices ,so we used more from the Touches From the Nature and a little bit from the Wood. In order to create an exciting space for the student and enhance creativity and productivity .

HIDA

OFFICE

PROJECT: OFFICES LO C AT I O N : T E M P E , A Z

THE CONFERENCE ROOM BRING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE The conference room is the face of the office and gives the first impression of the whole place. So, we designed the space with technological systems and to create a space for collaboration and Sharing Experiences. The opposite area of the conference room we added a white board to the space to allow people to brainstorming together or doing workshops inside the space .

4.0 PHOENIX COMMUNITY CENTER PROJECT : COMMERCIAL LOCATION : PHOENIX, AZ

The Community Art center is a place where the community enjoy the art and taking some classes in specific subjects. The center consists of art gallery, class rooms and outdoor spaces. It is inspired by its site in terms of design, materials and passive and active strategies. The idea is to design a place where it reflects its location . MAIN DESIGN STRATEGIES : • Regarding to the site analysis we designed the Art Center to be oriented on the north axis. Which is the best side to place our windows and have the outdoor connection. • Trees sited on the north side for the outdoor spaces to provide shading, cool air and reduce the noise coming from the streets. • All landscaping is native desert species requiring little to no water use and little maintenance. All plant choices are located within 100 miles of the site.

BLUE CHEETAH CAFE PROJECT : COMMERCIAL LOCATION : HAIL,SA

The concept behind the design is to reflect The Blue Cheetah Identity ,which is provided by the owner, into the space by using the design elements. We used the industrial design style to achieve our goal by the use of simple and lightweight furniture design , simple materials and some art pieces . The cafe design has to follow the rules of the city by providing two sections; family section and the singles section. The family section has two areas open and closed areas .

PRIVET VILLA PROJECT : RESIDENTIAL LOCATION : ALQASSIM,SA

I always believe that houses are one of the most important spaces to be designed. We spend most of our time indoors, which significantly impacts our physical and mental health. The concept behind The Private Villa Design is to create a well-designed interior environment. In order to achieve our goal we used the idea of minimalism and simplicity . “Simplicity is the ultimate form of Sophistication” One floor plan Villa has three bedrooms ,living room , and kitchen .
