CHAPTER ONE

DESIGN PROJECT PHASE I - COLLECTING DATA Research is an important component of the design process and it provides evidence for better design solutions.During the research phase and deep investigation of the users and their environment—The Office of Student Success. Integrating the research methods of interviewing , surveying and space analysis , we found the most important issues of the office to address them while designing our proposals .

1

HIDA OFFICE OF STUDENT SUCCESS

HIDA OFFICE OF STUDENT SUCCESS

Research Methods We used many different research methods to help us understand the psychological and physical atmosphere of the space .

Everyone would like: •

• • • •

The space to reflect that HIDA is a design and art school To showcase what the students at HIDA do- ideally though display of student work better /more consistent branding/colors/ lighting Better wayfinding General design consistency Very few people would like: Shared work spaces

Cubicles

Interviews Results Over the last two weeks, we interviewed 9 people who work in the space: 4 academic success coordinators 2 Student Engagement 2 student services staff (front desk) 3 student workers Interviews lasted 20-60 minutes and focused on their use of the space, on their needs for the space, and on their personal opinions and feelings about the space as it currently exists. In addition, interviewees were also shown images of a variety of interiors for the office, waiting, and flex spaces and asked for their responses to those spaces. Finally, they were asked if there were spaces currently around campus that they liked.

3

Everyone agrees the three areas should have different ambiance: Shared spaces should be more engaging /exciting

with

at

least

some

color.

Most advisors wanted a calm/zen feeling for their office, with room for personal variation. Almost all interviewees wanted the flex space to be a student hub with high traffic but a relaxed atmosphere. Scope While they would like smaller scale suggestions to optimize the current space, they would also like to have ideas for a potential space in an eventual newly built building.

Space Analysis Space analysis overall results. The team who was in charge doing the space analysis of office of student success found many physical issues that affecting the whole space • • • • •

The waiting room area The office circulation and wayfinding The private offices sizes ADA Requirements Negative spaces

Space analysis plays an important role in the research phase. It helps designers and architects to find the perfect solution for the specific issue.

HIDA OFFICE OF STUDENT SUCCESS

Survey Results-( Staff ) The survey questions were handed out to the staff of the Office of Student Success. Out of 20 staff members, 12 (n=12) responded. We found out that most of the staff are suffering from lack of the natural lighting inside the space. Also, 75% of the staff would like to have informal lounging furniture. Asking the staff the office branding ,most of the staff don’t feel that the office represents ASU’s and HIDA’s brand . In addition, the staff think that the the office should have more physical representation of HIDA incorporated in the design :

“Student art work displayed in waiting areas would be nice.” “I would love to see more art from the students.” “Student art collection, design, music, digital.” Survey Results-(Students ) Student would like to see the Office Of student succecc to be : • Colorful • Natural lighting • A variety of seating and tables (with outlet access) • More open of a space • Outdoor connections 5

DESIGN GUIDE PRINCIPLES

What does the HIDA Office of Student Success do ?

“facilitate the academic achievement and creative development of students while assisting in the navigation and attainment of their goals. The interior environment of the office plays an important role in achieving their goals. Through our research phase , we found many issues around the space. In this phase,we will focus on creating design solutions to make the space a place where employees and students want to be; a place where they come together in full partnership to make progress possible.

9

FLEXIBLE DESIGN Creating a flexible interior environment through the design elements such as furniture types and wayfinding will make people want to be in this space and spend more time.

ENERGETIC DESIGN Energetic interior environment, especially for the public spaces by bringing the outside inside and more colors to the space, will help to achieve the office goal.

WLCOMING DESIGN They say You never get a second chance to make a first impression So, focusing on branding and welcoming factors, will help to give people a great impression about the space.

LOOK AND FEEL BOARD

BRING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE The main principle behind biophilia is rather simple: connecting humans with nature to improve well-being The main strategy is to bring characteristics of the natural world into built spaces, such as water, greenery, natural light, elements like wood (where the grain is visible) and stone “Is the link to all that makes up earth and its ecosystems from textures, features, patterns, and systems. When people hear the term biophilia they usually immediately think of plants. Nature is not composed of just organic parts, but also inorganic parts such as stones and systems of patterns in river and lighting formation.

WOOD The exposure to the natural environment positively impacts human health and well-being, both physical and psychological • Lower stress levels • Improve attention and focus • Greater creativity • Quicker recovery • Reduced pain perception

TOUCHES FROM THE NATURE Colors have a great influence on people’s mental and physical interact with the interior environment . Using some touches from the Nature as a branding technique and to add the required impact of the space on people by using the Feng Shui design Philosophy of colors .

BRING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE The public spaces of the HIDA office of student success such as the entryway, reception area and the waiting area, designed in a way to make them welcoming, multifunctional and accommodate the ADA requirements. The entryway is the perfect space to brand the identity of HIDA before entering the suite, and adding a display wall to display students’ artwork and student swag added so much to the space. The other space is the waiting area, in this proposal we wanted to create a multifunctional space for not only the visitors to use it, but also for the staff to use it during the day for socializing or just changing their work space . Here is the MoodBoard of the public spaces.Since we are using the biophilic design idea, the best way to achieve it is by using the materials and colors. We used the wood as the main material and its colors to enhance the biophilia atmosphere inside the space. While the touches from nature used to be the secondary selection of materials and colors such as Terrazzo flooring (stones) and the colors as a branding technique . The type of furniture we used in the public spaces are modern style from SteelCase. This type of furniture is flexible; you can rearrange the pieces of furniture as you like. 31

BRING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE The private offices of the HIDA office of student success, designed to be unified and all of them have the same size of space . Since everything is moving to be digital, there is no need to have a big space . The design idea of the create a calm and quiet employee and the visitors. So sphere of the office from the

private space is to space for both the you can feel the atmoMoodBoard next page .

In the private offices we used the woodish more and a little bit from the touches from nature to create the desired atmosphere.

ACOUSTICAL SOLUTIONS The acoustical and visual privacy is the main factor to consider while designing the private office of Hida office of student success, since they deal with confidential documents and conversation everyday . In our private offices we are going to use the three areas of the space ; ceiling and 2 walls of the space to install our acoustical solution . As shown in the diagram next page .

FLEX SPACE

47

FLEX SPACE

BRING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE WHAT IS THE FLEX SPACE ? Flex space is a space for students to work, socialize and have fun. To make the space visually accessible to the ones who are sitting in the waiting area, we added a glass wall in between to let them see what is going on inside the space. • • • •

The flex space divided into three main zones : The collaboration zone The lounge zone The private zone

This is the MoodBoard of the Flex Space. We wanted to make the flex space different from the offices ,so we used more from the Touches From the Nature and a little bit from the Wood. In order to create an exciting space for the student and enhance creativity and productivity .

WHAT IF ?

THE FUTURE OF HIDA OFFICE OF STUDENT SUCCESS! Acoustical and visual Privacy is the main element to put into consideration while designing the HIDA Office, That’s why we see a lot of Student success offices use closed floor plan .because they are dealing with confidential documents and conversation everyday We totally respect the need of having acoustical and visual privacy, but as an interior architect we need to accommodate the design elements that create a welldesigned space for both; Staff and Visitors.
