Campco Federal Credit Union
Area lending institution specializes in ‘life improvements’ C
ampco Federal Credit Union was started in 1971 by 10 members as Campco School Employees Federal Credit Union. As stated in its name, Campco served only employees of the Campbell County School District, immediate family of those members, and employees of the credit union. At the time Campco was chartered, business was conducted from a member’s home with only share accounts and very small loans being offered to its membership. Only later in the 1980’s did Campco generate enough business to relocate to its first leased office, which was shared by a local accounting firm. In Campco’s 20th anniversary year, it had grown to its first $5 million in assets, Campco School Employees FCU was now Campco FCU; and was serving all Campbell County government and City employees. Soon after, land was purchased and plans began for Campco’s new main branch and building at 902 E. Third Street in Gillette. In 1993, Campco FCU officially moved into its new location. Three years later in 1996, and at nearly $10 million in assets, Campco’s charter was amended to a community charter that would serve all those who live, worship or work in Campbell County. Continuous growth in the 1990’s also led to the opening of Campco’s Wright Branch that began in leased office space in the small community of Wright. Because of this new branch, Campco was able to reach out and provide increased convenience to all residents of Campbell County. But the most significant growth that Campco has ever experienced, was between the years of 2002 when Campco reached a milestone of $25 million in assets to 2008 when it doubled its assets to $50 million. It was also in this timeframe that Campco was able to purchase additional land in the Wright community to build a new building for the Wright Branch. Today in 2011, Campco FCU will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary at $62 million in assets and welcomes all Campbell County residents to join.

The Chophouse
Private meetings, special occasions, or just a dinner out on the town – we won’t let you down C harles and April Schlesselman first came to Gillette in 1991. Charles was an executive chef before selling wholesale groceries for Sysco foods until 1999, when April and Charles decided to take on a restaurant career running the Wagon Box in Story, and later another restaurant in Gillette. A lifelong dream to own a restaurant came to reality in May 2010 when Ed and Phyllis Vanscoy decided to sell their business to the Schlesselman family. Some changes they have made since they bought The Chophouse include expanding into catering business, greatly expanding the wine inventory and introducing new and exciting promotions like half-price Crown Royal on Mondays, half-price wine by the bottle on Tuesdays, and $5 glasses of wine on Wednesdays. April and Charles have found that they are the best team in the restaurant business. Whether it’s catering or a busy night at The Chophouse, the management team is up to the challenge! The Chophouse Restaurant is committed to giving you the best dining experience in Gillette. The great thing about The Chophouse is that it is still an intimate place to have that special meal because it’s not a food factory that treats you like a number. The employees at The Chophouse feel privileged to help their customers. The Schlesselmans value their hard-working staff of both family and friends. Without them, they know The Chophouse would be just another restaurant. Being a family-owned business means long hours, hard work and a real commitment to customers. When you hear Charles’ or April’s voice on the radio or see them in the restaurant, you know why their slogan is “We won’t let you down!”

Gillette News Record
We’ve been watching out for you since 1904 W
hen it comes to local history, no business in town can claim to be more involved than the News Record. We’ve been providing reports of that history for 107 years — only we call it “news.” While there were scattered editions of the newspaper from Gillette’s beginning in 1891, the Gillette News began its continual operation in 1904. The Campbell County Record began publishing in 1913, mainly because Republicans couldn’t stomach the liberal leanings of Roy Montgomery, who had since taken over the publication. Arthur Nisselius combined the two operations in 1925 after working for about three years at the Record. That marked the start of a long history of journalism
in the Nisselius family. Art continued working that the News Record until his death in 1962, and his wife, Hazel, worked until her retirement in 1967. Their son, Jack, had begun work at the News Record after he returned from World War II and continued publishing the paper until his retirement in 1991. In 1970, Nisselius added partners to his operation. Bruce and Betty Kennedy joined him as co–publishers of the newspaper, a partnership that lasted until the Kennedys bought the paper from Nisselius and his wife, Chris, in January 1991. The two families also had collaborated on several other Wyoming newspapers. Ann Kennedy Turner, the Kennedys’ daughter, moved to Gillette in 1989 to begin work at the paper and has been editor since 1999.
All total, these two families have had their hands in the day-to-day operations of the News Record for all but about 15 years of its 107year history. We know how a community’s past is part of its future. We understand that it is the people who energize a community, and it is news of those people that vitalize a newspaper. That’s why we launched a project to do stories about Campbell County’s historic ranches this year for the county’s centennial celebration — 52 ranches in all. In their histories, we can see the uniqueness of those around us. In their commitment, we can trace the roots of our community. The commitment of those early day ranchers is being carried on by their descendants today. Just as it is at the News Record.

Marshall Jewelry
It’s where she’ll love it, guaranteed B
ruce and MaryAnn Marshall first came to Gillette to work for Zane’s Jewelry downtown in 1987. Bruce managed the store for the Marsden family until the Marshalls bought it in 1997. Around 2001, they decided they either needed a major remodel or a move in order to have room for all the merchandise and diamond inventory that they kept buying. When they heard about the Silverado Center, they liked the location, the expanded showroom potential and the larger customer parking area. After paying rent for years, they also liked the fact that eventually they will own the space, so they decided to move. Some changes they have made since buying the new store are computerizing the inventory and customer information, greatly expanding their inventory and increasing their staff from six to 14. Bruce and MaryAnn have found that they can buy diamonds directly from the cutting factories in Antwerp, Belgium, and eliminate the price increases put on the diamonds by the manufacturer and wholesale distributors. It also allows them to look through hundreds of diamonds for one that measures up to their requirements. It is amazing to see a diamond dealer in his office with millions of dollars worth of diamonds where you still do business with a handshake. Another change they made in the store was the price of the items. Zane’s Jewelry had marked the prices up so they could have a 40 percent or 50 percent off sale and still make money. The Marshalls lowered all the prices to the sale price and quit having sales. This way they have one low price year round. The great thing about being in the jewelry business is that the staff at Marshall Jewelry gets to help people celebrate special occasions – whether it is with a piece they have in stock or

Roberto’s Cafe
Come on in for a hearty helping of down-home cooking and friendly service I
f you’re hungry for “the best burger in town” – well according to the regulars anyway – head out south of Gillette to Roberto’s Cafe. Roberto and his staff invite you to enjoy great food in a friendly non–smoking dining environment. The cafe just celebrated its one-year anniversary in February and is located in the former Countryside Cafe building, which was a cozy staple of our community for years. Now that building is home to a new cafe which is fast becoming a favorite spot to grab a bite amongst the locals. Roberto’s Cafe is owned and operated by Roberto Gonzalez. Roberto – or Robert to his friends – moved to Gillette in 1989 from Jackson. He has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years, working at a small Mexican restaurant in Gillette until he decided to finally venture out on his own in 2010. Roberto’s Cafe has a total of six employees, whom along with its customers are treated like family. The regulars say they like Roberto’s because it is convenient, the food is great, the prices are reasonable, and the homemade salsa is a must. The cafe’s menu boasts a large variety of breakfast options including its well-known breakfast burrito as well as the usual favorites, plus a large lunch and dinner selection that includes burgers, sandwiches, and several Mexican dishes. Robert and his staff invite you to stop in and enjoy a hearty home-cooked meal with them anytime, Monday through Saturday from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Above, the crew at Roberto’s — Hope, from left, Robert, Rhonda and Emmalee — are ready to serve you. The staff also includes Veronica and Amparo, not pictured.

Suite Escape
One of Gillette’s oldest places to gather is now one of Gillette’s newest places to get together W
hen Wil and Pam Mondragon bought the little building on the corner of Third and Brooks in August 2007, they thought owning an equipment rental store would really come in handy. They knew the building was old, you know, the kind of old that makes you think “WOW, historical!” Which it is, but more on that in a minute. It also brought comments: “You bought what?” (That came from Wil.) “You’re not going to tear it down?” (That came from the well intentioned public.) “We can fix it up a little.” (Which came, of course, from Pam.) “What was I thinking?” (Pam later could be heard muttering.) The fact that the building has endured long enough to be restored at all is testament to the sometimes unexpected tenacity of the small and insignificant, be it matter or mortal. It was clear the building had been lovingly tended to by the Jericho Baptist and previously the Church of God of Prophecy Baptist, which originally built it. The history still is a little sketchy. It seems it always has been a church, though research is now being conducted as to an actual build date. It would appear possible that when the structure was started, meaning a “tar paper shack” it could still have been in Crook County. The City of Gillette and Campbell County

do not have any documentation, nor is there any information yet found in the News Record archives. What does appear to be accurate is that a man named Orlis Shroyer was instrumental in its construction. Whether that means original or improving an existing structure is unclear. There are two buildings of similar style in Lusk and Guernsey. So, what exactly has the church become? While it has
retained its aura of being a church, God clearly still resides there. The upstairs has been preserved as much as possible to what appears to be a renovation in 1940. Newspaper clippings found under the fir tongue-in-groove flooring attest to the date. Chandeliers twinkle softly, giving the golden walls a glow. The ornate doors in front, vintage restrooms, the old windows with their fussy curtains, all warmed
by wood accents, make visitors feel welcome and relaxed. It’s not a particularly large room, or building. In fact, though the city assigned it a capacity of 104, a more comfortable number is around 75. But whatever the number, all who visit have been charmed by the ambiance. And, of course, it still has church roots. When you step up on the stage you want to burst into song, make a speech,
or do a theater performance. Turn on music and visions of a private concert or dinner theater form in your mind. The acoustics are quite remarkable. Weddings still are the most popular event. Add the luxury suite in the basement, the beautifully landscaped grounds, the privacy, and freedom to bring in whatever food and beverage you want, and you have the makings of a spectacular event. During foundation work, the old shallow cellar-type basement was transformed into a beautiful apartment-style extended stay suite. Those who see it for the first time are astonished to behold such a comfortable and inviting space under this little old building. The possibilities are endless. Executives from out of town might enjoy the home-style atmosphere of the suite while conducting presentations at his or her convenience upstairs in the hall. Truly, Suite Escape is the perfect get-away, right in town. (No noisy neighbors pounding on walls in the next room. Park next to the door.) Other amenities include: Cable TV, internet and a laundry room. No pool, but the oversized whirlpool tub is a pretty fair substitute and you can send the kids to the Rec Center to swim. A barbeque area at the rear of the property, plus volleyball in the backyard and plenty of room for an RV or two in the parking lot suggests a family reunion. ■■■

ake Jackson’s vision was to eventually open a retail store providing sales and installation of both home and car electronics with great customer service. His desire to start the business came from a lack of businesses of this kind in the area. Jake began providing services to customers out of his home in 2006. Even then, his business foundation was based on customer service, knowledgeable sales associates, expert installation and honest business practices. In November of 2008 he opened his retail store, Soundworks. The store carries a large assortment of home and car audio and video equipment. With pricing comparable and more affordable then the big box stores. Jake feels his business finally fulfills the need of a great electronics store in Gillette. Soundworks also provides the areas only certified home and automotive electronics installers. Jake, Dusty, and Sonny are committed to being experts in their fields and running an honest business for the Gillette community. Jake and the staff at Soundworks thank you for your continued support.
