WITH LONG HOT DAYS UPON US, our furry friends may spend a little more time indoors. Finding ways to make your interior pet-friendly is smart and definitely on-trend with current buyers. I recently read an article talking about ‘barkitecture’— where home owners intentionally plan pet-friendly elements into their design, indulging their pets’ needs with special, practically designed areas and using flooring, fabrics and furniture that are stylish, durable, and safe. Thankfully there are many beautiful scratch-resistant flooring options, and if you prefer real hardwood, experts say an oil based finish may make them easier to repair if they become scratched. And while area rugs do offer more floor protection, be aware they can also harbor dander, ticks and fleas. If you use them, vacuum regularly and try using essential oils like citrus to help deter unwanted pests. And don’t forget outdoor elements! WE HAVE A BIG HEART FOR OUR PETS and love to support others who feel the same. That’s why we love The Buddy Foundation, based in Arlington Heights, which has a mission to provide immediate safety and care to stray, abused and abandoned animals. Once they find that an animal is medically sound, they place them in a secure, temporary, no-kill environment.

They work hard to save animals; sadly, four to six million animals are euthanized each year, the equivalent of 575 every hour. But at The Buddy Foundation, their goal is to change the perception of an animal shelter by providing a safe-haven approach. The shelter allows Buddy the ability to evaluate each animal’s needs and give them immediate love and comfort. The staff and volunteers get to know them and look to find the perfect “forever home” for as many as possible. If just the right home cannot be found, animals will stay with Buddy as long as they live!
