Pet Pictures with the Easter Bunny

NORTH AURORA – The Fox Valley Animal Welfare League will host a “Pet Pictures with the Easter Bunny” fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 23 at the league’s office, 11 John St., North Aurora. Pet lovers can have their pet’s picture taken with the Easter bunny for a minimum $5 donation, as well as purchase baked goods, jewelry and pet-friendly plants. Pet food donations also are welcome to supply the league’s pet food pantry.

Donations help those who are economically challenged receive a supplemental bag of food. Items should be unused and not expired. The fundraiser will support the Fox Valley Animal Welfare League spay/neuter clinic. The clinic provides services to low income clients, rescue groups and senior citizens. ST. CHARLES – The Easter Bunny is making his rounds through the St. Charles Park District. Each registered participant, ages 1-7, will have the opportunity to get a picture taken with the Bunny and receive a chocolate treat. Parents, the Bunny will call when he is on his way. The fee for one child is $17 for residents and $25.50 for nonresidents. Additional child fee is $3 for residents and $4.50 for nonresidents. Women’s social group about giving back to community

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Members of the Mothers Club of Geneva acknowledge the name of their organization might give people the wrong impression about what they do.

They neither sit around and knit nor do they focus on establishing playgroups for their kids. Some members aren’t even mothers.

These women are focused on philanthropy.

The group gathered Sunday at The Sugar Path in downtown Geneva for their winter membership drive to talk about their contributions to the Fox Valley.

They have donated money to organizations such as the St. Peter Food Pantry and Fox Valley Hospice and have also given of their time at places such as the Northern Illinois Food Bank and Mutual Ground, where they recently gave the shelter’s therapy room a makeover.

The club also annually awards $10,000 in scholarships to Geneva High School seniors, she said.

But the club isn’t able to give through its members’ efforts alone. It relies on the community to support its biggest fundraisers: the holiday arts and crafts show at Geneva High School and the spring fashion show set for April 14 at Riverside Receptions.

“The more generous the community is, the more generous we’re able to be,” fashion show organizer Lisa Adair said.

Philanthropy has been at the heart of the Mothers Club of Geneva since the five women founded the organization

in February 1940, according to the club’s website.

“Originally calling itself The Young Mother’s Club of Geneva, the group’s focus and purpose was the same then as it is today, that of attaining true happiness in family life through learning, fellowship and philanthropy,” the website states.

Now, members estimate the club has about four dozen members.

Membership drives are usually held in the winter and summer, although the club always welcomes new members, Spitzer said.

The annual fee is $25 and there are no residency or meeting attendance requirements.

Members also can participate in social outings, which sometimes include children and husbands.

“It’s a fun group of ladies, for sure,” Spitzer said.

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Brynn Beveridge and her fellow students at St. Charles East High School knew they wanted to make the school student council’s annual walk-a-thon bigger than it had ever been.

But they didn’t know exactly which route to take.

So, in the end, they decided to check “all of the above,” said Beveridge, public relations officer for the high school’s student council.

“We put up posters, set up a Twitter, Facebook and a website, contacted the newspapers, talked to local businesses, and started inviting everyone we could think of,” Beveridge said.

“And I think it worked out pretty well.”

Saturday, the fruits of that effort were on prominent display, as more than 300 St. Charles East students, their family members, and others from the community assembled around the school’s indoor track for the fifth annual fundraiser Walk-a-thon for Autism Speaks.

When the event launched five years ago, it drew only a smattering of students, said Victor Vant, one of the council’s advisers.

“If they got 30 students in here, everyone was happy,” said Vant.

In each year since, attendance has grown, Vant said, reaching about 150 participants last year.

But this year, organizers wanted to take the event to a new level, said Beveridge and adviser Patty Van Lehn.

“There was a more concentrated effort this year to connect with the community,” Van Lehn said.

Beveridge said she felt the

event could grow much larger than it had been, and that it would, if the rest of the student body and the greater St. Charles community only knew about it.

“I participated as a walker last year as a freshman,” Beveridge said. “And I thought it was such an amazing event, and a great cause.

“But I thought we could publicize it better.”

The effort began by extending an invitation to all of the students participating in St. Charles East’s various clubs.

From there, organizers created posters to hang throughout the school and at some St. Charles businesses.

To bolster the fundraising effort, organizers also solicited donations of goods from local businesses for a silent auction.

Vant said the extra effort will result in a collection of more than $7,000 for Autism Speaks, an organization that funds autism research and promotes autism awareness.

“We’ve doubled the number of walkers this year,” Vant said. “I can’t say enough about the job these students have done here.”

Redemption song sweet for North

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com WINNETKA – St. Charles North athletes aimed for redemption during this weekend’s IHSA boys swimming and diving state meet, never officially defining its parameters but still sporting the goal on the back of their T-shirts.

After taking eighth as a team on the heels of last season’s 13th-place finish, the North Stars felt fulfilled enough.

North closed Saturday’s competition with top-six finishes in two relays and strong individual swims from Kyle Gannon, who placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle and seventh in the 200 free. While much of North’s nucleus will graduate, the group left New Trier East in a far better mood than it did last year at Evanston.

Redemption mission accomplished.

“We weren’t really sure coming into this year what our team was going to be like,” North senior Spencer Gray said. “I think we’ve got a lot farther than our expectations. We had a lot of great swims, and it’s been a lot of fun.”

North tallied 62 team points, one behind seventh-place Marmion, which, like the rest of the field, labored to keep pace with host and champion Trevians (189).

Marmion relied on its relays for much of its scoring, as the Cadets qualified for two championship finals and one consolation final.

Mike Burke and Josh Kanute were part of all three relays, and had their best finish when they teamed with Robert Ramoska and Minnesota-bound Jon Thielen in the 400 freestyle relay, taking third in 3:06.15 to close the day.

“Not fully tapering for sectionals last week really made a difference for the relays,” Kanute said. “That definitely put us in position to have our best performance today.”

St. Charles East notched nine points to finish in a tie for 32nd among the 46 teams who scored Saturday.

Junior Will Shanel finished eighth in the 200 individual medley in 1:53.93 – three-tenths of a second from winning the consolation championship – before joining seniors Alec Carnell, TJ Bindseil and Taylor Nunnery on the 11th-place 200 freestyle relay.

The 200 free was the lone relay in which North did not qualify. The North Stars’ quartet of Austin Stapella, David Chokran, Nick Kowaleski and Kyle Gannon opened the afternoon with a fourthplace race in the 200 medley relay (1:34.48).

In the traditional closer – the 400 free relay – Gray, Kowaleski, freshman Stephan Hutchinson and Gannon took fifth in 3:07.51.

Gray also placed 10th in the 500 freestyle, a race that ultimately helped North double its team score from a season ago.

“At the end of last year, we left with a

bad taste in our mouths,” said Gray, also a multiple state qualifier in cross country and track. “This year’s been a lot better.

We’ve had a lot more fun this year.”

Gannon could attest.

He called the end of his standout career “very surreal,” as he happily prepared from race to race while accumulating four medals.

Apart from the relays, Gannon won his 200 free consolation final (1:39.99) and was second in the 500 free (4:31.82), engaging in a duel with the front-runners before eventual champion Reed Malone of New Trier topped Gannon by about eight seconds.

“I was there for 10, 11, 12 laps and then the last 200. ... I don’t feel like I fell apart.

I just felt like the third- and fourth-place guys just had really kind of good last gears,” Gannon said. “I don’t know.”

What’s clearer to Gannon and his teammates is their resolve. Behind the tutelage of veteran coach Rob Rooney – who backed a training-first approach during regular season duals and invitationals – North set its sights on New Trier East and redemption.

“We had some bad swims last year. We had some guys not make it back [to finals] that we thought might make it back,” Gannon said. “So I think this year, to have two relays in the top six, to have two guys score in the [500 free] and swimming in the consolation heat in the 200 free, I’d say it’s definitely a success.”

Mooseheart basketball, regional champions.

Has a nice ring to it, and better yet, there’s a good chance “regional” won’t be the only kind of champs the Red Ramblers are before all is said and done.

Hop on the Rambler bandwagon, people.

Hey, Sly knows (although not from first-hand experience, sadly), that being super tall has its advantages, but it’s still hard not to look at Mooseheart as an underdog when it comes to serious, postseason basketball.

Maybe we’ll have to change that state of mind after the Ramblers took apart a Hinckley-Big Rock program that has been a thorn in Mooseheart’s side in more ways than one this season.

As talented as the Ramblers are on paper, there were still a lot of questions about how they’d respond to postseason pressure and a more experienced opponent. Not anymore. A cold shiver should be going through the spines of the rest of the 1A field right about now.

As for the bigger schools, let’s get this boys basketball postseason rolling, shall we?

It might look like a daunting road ahead for the Tri-Cities boys teams, but Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North have all shown they can beat good team at various points of the season and, hey, Batavia’s got home court and a bunch of seniors who want to keep playing ball.

Let’s see what happens.

Aside from St. Charles East, just about every local team has one of those play-in games right off the bat Monday.

If nothing else, here’s hoping the local teams take care of business (most are favorites) on Monday.

Once you get into the regional semis is when you start getting some more legit postseason atmosphere and, more importantly, who the heck wants to be one-and-done?

Who says February has to be blah? The Marmion wrestling team, for one, enjoyed great success in the shortest month of the year.

Here’s a look: Feb. 2: Handily wins 3A Naperville Central regional, qualifies for dual team state tournament Feb. 16: Crowns two individual 3A state champions – Johnny Jimenez (120) and George Fisher (132) Feb. 23: Places second at dual team state tournament, finishes 26-3 in duals Duncan (106), George Fisher (138) and Cody Snodgrass (195) won by major decision.

“We were confident. We were planning on going to the finals,” said Jimenez, a St. Charles resident who won an individual title at 120 last week.

“Each wrestler was really confident with how they were going to wrestle [in the first two rounds]. Not necessarily taking the pedal off, but the finals match is what we were mainly focusing on.”

Jimenez said the school’s first state trophy is a big step for the Cadets program. The school advanced to state in 2010 but didn’t make it past the quarterfinals.

“A lot of people are going to see that now we’re really growing as a program, doing a lot better. Hopefully get a lot more kids,” Jimenez said. “We’re losing a pretty tough senior class.

It should be exciting to see how Marmion ends up, hopefully getting a lot better than we are now.”

Cubs in no hurry with shortstop Baez

By MEGHAN MONTEMURRO montemurro@shawmedia.com MESA, Ariz. – Getting his first taste of the big leagues, although it’s only spring training, has already helped Cubs prospect Javier Baez.

The opportunity to work and compete alongside Alfonso Soriano and Starlin Castro is paying off for the 20-year-old shortstop, who credits his teammates for pointing out and correcting any mistakes he’s made during spring training. But one piece of advice has stood out among the rest.

“Try not to show off because everyone here knows what you can do and what you do,” Baez said. “So I’m just doing my own thing.”

Baez, the ninth overall draft pick by the Cubs in 2011, has plenty of talent on display any time he steps onto the field or in the batter’s box. Baseball America lists Baez as the 16thbest minor league prospect, and the publication rated him as the Cubs’ best defensive minor league infielder after the

2012 season.

Despite the accolades, it’s a bit foolish to believe Baez will supplant Castro, a two-time All-Star at shortstop, any time soon. Baez, who has never played above Single-A Daytona during his two minor league seasons, has drawn plenty of attention after receiving an invitation to the Cubs’ big league spring training camp. The opportunity even surprised Baez.

“I didn’t expect it,” Baez said. “It is exciting.”

The Cubs have ruled out Baez making the team out of camp, and when manager Dale Sveum was asked if Baez is pushing Castro at shortstop, he provided a one-word answer: “No.” The speculation regarding Baez’s arrival to the majors has begun prompting questions about his big league position, with Castro blocking him at shortstop. Baez, though, displays maturity through his willingness to move to another position if it means playing for the Cubs.

“For me, it don’t really matter,” Baez said. “I can play

shortstop, I can play third, I can play second. I can play outfield if they want me to. I can play anywhere.

“My goal is to get there and stay there.”

Cubs vice president of scouting and development Jason McLeod expects Baez to start the year at Daytona, though he said that plan could change. As the Cubs have proved with first baseman Anthony Rizzo, they have a development plan for each player that they want to see through.

“That’s one thing about spring training, you never try to let the performance dictate too much,” McLeod told Shaw Media. “It’s more about sticking to their individual development plan and how they go about their business every day. It’s more the process with it. Every now and then a guy might force his way into a level higher than maybe we thought, but for the most part we have a plan already in place and it’s been communicated to the players. Now it’s just about getting their work in.”

BLOOMINGTON – Marmion’s wrestlers made school history Saturday at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

For the first time, the Cadets took home a trophy from the IHSA dual team state finals, finishing in second place in Class 2A. Marmion (26-3) lost to Sandburg, 38-17, in the state championship match. Junior Johnny Jimenez went 3-0 on the day, winning by fall, technical fall and major decision.

“It feels awesome. We’re really proud of ourselves, although we didn’t take first, which we wanted,” Jimenez said. “But we really worked hard this season.

We’re proud of what we did.”

At the bridge table, defenders have gotten much smarter over the last couple of decades, letting their partners be their guide instead of guessing.

In this example deal, how should West plan the defense against three spades after he leads the club ace: jack, two, five?

Since South was vulnerable, had a relatively weak suit and 7-22-2 distribution, he opened with two spades, not three. No doubt North should have jumped to four spades, but that would have ruined the story.

West needs to find five tricks. There are two logical ways to procure them: East has the heart ace and the defenders can take two clubs, two hearts and the spade king, promoted as a winner on the third round of hearts. Or East has acejack-third of diamonds, giving East-West two clubs and three diamonds. But how does West know which way to turn?

Under the club king, East can play his nine or his four.

Each can be used to send a suit-preference signal. Here, because East has the heart ace, in the higher-ranking of the other two side suits, he plays his club nine. Then West will know to cash his heart king and continue with his second heart.

East will win with his ace and play a third heart, letting West score his spade king.

Watch out for employing “useless” cards for suit-preference signals when attitude and count are either known or irrelevant.
