Third man held on $2.5M bond in store clerk slaying SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BENSENVILLE – A third man has been charged in connection to the January slaying of Hussein Saghir, a Bensenville store clerk, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Stephen A. Russell, 20, of 3503 W. Armitage Ave., Chicago, is being held on $2.5 million bond for allegations he harassed a possible witness in the case, State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah said.

Russell is charged with four counts of harassing a witness or witness’s family member and two counts of intimidation by physical harm, Darrah said, adding other charges may still be brought against Russell.

Two other menhavealready been charged with first-degree murder for their alleged roles in Saghir’s death.

T r e m a y n e Stephen A. Davis, 23, of 1417 Russell N. Lotus Ave., Chicago, and Kenneth Bardlett, 20, of 49th Avenue, Bellwood, also are being held on $2.5 million bond, according to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Davis was charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of attempted armed robbery and one count of obstructing justice, and Bardlett was charged with first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Davis, Bardlett and at least one accomplice allegedly encountered Saghir on Jan. 19 outside Sam’s Tobacco and Foodmart store in Bensenville, as Saghir was preparing to leave for the evening, according to a State’s Attorney’s Office news release.

After a brief altercation, Saghir was shot and later died from his injuries, the release stated.

Davis was allegedly the getaway driver after the murder, according to the release. An investigation conducted by the Bensenville Police Department, the Major Crimes Task Force and the State’s Attorney’s Office led authorities to Bardlett.

The investigation into Saghir’s murder continues.

Man convicted of armed robberies in Bensenville, Glen Ellyn, Lombard SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA An Evanston man serving a 14-year prison term for armed robberies in Cook County was sentenced Monday morning to 14 addi tional years in prison for Jason sticking up Logsdon businesses in Bensenville, Glen Ellyn and Lombard, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Jason Logsdon, 42, of 900 Chicago Ave., Evanston, pleaded guilty Monday to robbing four DuPage County businesses between late 2012 and early 2013, the release stated.

Once inside, Logsdon would hold an employee at gunpoint and demand money. In each robbery, Logsdon reportedly fled on foot.

Logsdon was arrested Feb. 4, 2013, and charged with four counts of aggravated robbery.

Some of the same vendors from 2013’s inaugural event will return, and they will be joined by newcomers as well, said Bernadette “Dee” LaRocca, executive director of the Addison Chamber of Commerce and Industry. One comment LaRocca heard repeatedly after last year was appreciation for the location, Alta Villa Banquets.

“They enjoyed the venue for sure,” LaRocca said.

Alta Villa will again host the expo, which features a variety of vendors, from skin care and cosmetics to flowers and formal wear.

Vegas-style entertainer Vito Zatto will perform at the free event. In addition, three fashion shows will exhibit formal wear, mother-of-the-bride styles and wedding gowns.

With 25 years of experience, Alta Villa’s event coordinator Cheryl Hoest said she’s seen many changes over the years, but she still gives all of her brides-to-be the same advice.

“The biggest thing I still tell the bride is don’t stress the small stuff,” Hoest said. “Just enjoy the day. It’s yours.”

One advantage many of today’s brides have is the wealth of information and guides, she said. There are friends, family, magazines and now the Inter-

“Most brides don’t get as intimidated as they used to,” Hoest said.

But even with seemingly endless resources, some wedding traditions haven’t changed, she said.

“June is still the bride’s month,” Hoest said.

She suggests traditional brides looking for a summer wedding begin planning a year to 15 months in advance – not only to secure a venue, but because a grand wedding requires time to plan.

On the other hand, Hoest said those looking for a simple or off-season wedding could probably spend six or even

County sees record low voter turnout

Only 18.9 percent of registered voters went to the polls March 18, he said, most of them Republicans.

“It’s the lowest percentage that I can find in modern times for this type of election,” he said.

District 88 remains focused on students At District 88, we’re committed to being open and honest with our stakeholders to provide them with accurate information about the district. Two areas you might hear about are the finances/financial ratings of school districts and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers assessments.

Finances/financial ratings:

It is estimated 62 percent of VOICE school districts in Illinois Scott are now deficit-spending, Helton including affluent schools.

That deficit spending has been caused by a challenging economy and the corresponding decline of district property values, or EAV, since 2008. This has led the financial rating of many school districts to decrease, but District 88 is listed at the second-highest financial level for the second year in a row, which is referred to as “Review.”

Three questions we get asked frequently are, “Where is District 88’s year-to-date budget in terms of revenue and expenditures?” “Why is my property tax bill increasing when my property value is declining?” and “Why is District 88 in deficit-spending?” District 88 Chief Financial Officer Ed Hoster answers those questions at tinyurl.com/k4ns287.

PARCC assessments: At District 88, preparing students for college and career is our focus and goal. Addison Trail and Willowbrook continue to implement the new, rigorous Common Core State Standards that have been adopted by Illinois and many states throughout the U.S. The Illinois State Board of Education also plans to change the state assessment program to match the new Common Core State Standards, and full implementation of those assessments is intended for the 2014-15 school year. Illinois’ current state assessment, the Prairie State Achievement Exam, involves a full ACT and the ACT WorkKeys test at grade 11. District 88 is in favor of including the ACT in the state assessment because of its value to students for college entry. Area superintendents and I drafted a position statement and recommendations that have been shared with State Superintendent Dr. Chris Koch, and we also have had discussions with State Rep. The Bensenville Park District’s fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball team recently completed an undefeated championship season.

The Bensenville Park District’s fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball squad is no stranger to success, but the team’s latest season took that to a new level. The team of 10 girls compiled a perfect 30-0 record in claiming their third consective championship.

There’s no sign of any arrogance or bragging among these girls, either, who talked about teamwork and playing together when they spoke to Suburban Life recently.

Coming up on April 12 is School District 4’s 9th annual Family Fun Fair, and it looks like the Educational Foundation for Excellence, which organizes the event at Indian Trail Junior High School, has lots in store. There will be music, food and free games for kids, and the entry fee is just $1. Proceeds benefit the foundation.

Kudos to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for sharing its space with those less fortunate who need a place to be sheltered at night.

Concern over children walking to and from Cossitt School is hypocritical when there are at least a dozen restaurants within a block of the school serving alcohol during school hours.

Comparing La Grange to the fictitious television show “Mayberry” is likely done by a person too young to have known the characters in the show. Barney Fife was a bumbling goof, Aunt Bee was a gossip and Gomer Pyle was a dim witted mechanic.

It was Sheriff Taylor’s good will, politeness and kindness that kept all the other characters in order. Caring for those who are most likely mentally ill is a lesson in compassion that it seems the community of La Grange could use.

Art’s Alive! workshops continue, thanks to donor SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ADDISON – Indian Trail Junior High School students explored theater, music and art through Art’s Alive! workshops in March.

The free after-school program was funded by an anonymous donor, but during the past two years, a grant from the DuPage Community Foundation and the Addison Center for the Arts funded the workshops taught by professional working artists.

Students had the opportunity to sign up for one of four workshops.

During “Streamline Songwriting – How to Get Started on Your Hit Song,” Peter Bartels worked with students to write and record their own songs.

Wendy Rizza led the “Create with Clay” workshop, teaching students the “pinch pot” technique where students first learned how to form a round or oval hollow shape and then embellish it to form fish, birds or other shapes.

Artist Lynn Reising taught students how to create a felted bug in the “Felted Butterflies and Flying Bugs” workshop.

In the final workshop, “Improv into Film,” Cathleen Schandelmeier worked with students to develop improvisational skits, which they filmed to make a mini movie.

Indian Trail art teacher Sue Bortko, along with Addison resident and artist Annette Leiber, worked together to provide the art program.

nlurz@shawmedia.com The DuPage County Board took another pair of steps in its long move toward consolidation at Tuesday’s board meeting, voting both to formally dissolve a fire district in Downers Grove and looked at two new agencies for possible downsizing.

The board voted unanimously to take the next step in dissolving the Fairview Fire Protection District, with only a possible public referendum standing in the way of the consolidation.

The act was the first time a piece of landmark legislation allowing DuPage County to dissolve a county-appointed government agency deemed outdated, defunct or redundant was used in the county. The law, signed in August 2013 by Gov. Pat Quinn, could mean the end of a number of mosquito abatement, sanitary and fire protection districts.

“The rest of the state is watching, and we’re utilizing the tool, the law that the legislature and the governor gave us, and I think we can be proud of what we accomplished here today,” Board Chairman Dan Cronin said.

The Fairview District does not own fire equipment or employ staff, but levied an annual property tax and has an agreement with the village of Downers Grove to provide its emergency response services.

Yet the district owes more than $100,000 to the village of Downers Grove, according to an assessment prompted by the DuPage County Board. The assessment determined, due to tax caps, the district would not be able to resolve the unpaid obligation without a referendum to seek additional money.

Downers Grove agreed to waive the debt, and the county created a Special Service Area for the parcels, which essentially cuts out the middle man. Fairview Fire Protection District will be completely dissolved after 150 days, according

to the ordinance.

Any objecting party can still file a petition with at least 25 signatures requesting the dissolution be submitted to referendum for the ballot this November.

Cronin said he “highly doubt[ed]” that a referendum would come up due to the diligence in research and communication involved in the project.

The board also voted on hiring Christopher B. Burke Engineering to assess eliminating or absorbing two more agencies on their 13-district list of targets – the Highland Hills of Lombard and Salt Creek of Villa Park sanitary districts.

Both districts were identified as having financial issues that presented long-term concerns to the county in a 2012 report from consultant Crowe Horwath. Salt Creek would likely need “significant capital improvements,” the report stated, and Highland Hills was mired in structural financial debt. The consultant recommended the county look at consolidating or sharing services with another entity.

The contract is worth $69,496.85 and goes through June 30, 2015, according to the board agenda.

When they awoke, they discovered the victim unresponsive and cold.

Witnesses were taken to Elmhurst police headquarters and told police the victim had snorted heroin in the hotel room earlier that night, the release stated.

DuPage United nonprofit announces county funding, job program timeline

The initiative, called Career Connect Metro West, will combine resources from DuPage United and two other major organizations to recruit, train and connect the underemployed and unemployed.

Learning center reopens opportunity

mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Walking into one of the communal rooms last week at the new Main Street Community Learning Center, Kim Zoeller saw something that alleviated her concerns.

The Ray Graham Association president and CEO knows transition can be challenging for an individual with developmental disabilities.

What she saw was a man, who initially had reservations about the new space, sitting quietly in a bean bag chair.

“He was totally relaxed because it wasn’t chaotic and it wasn’t noisy,” Zoeller said.

The Ray Graham Association’s Main Street Community Learning Center officially opened March 21 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new space, located a few blocks north of the old facility, will be much more efficient for the staff and the roughly 80 individuals who come daily to use services, Zoeller said.

“This space is beautiful and I think it is going to enhance the quality of our programming exponentially,” Zoeller said.

The new space has seven more washrooms than the old facility, a kitchen and a washer and dryer – features not present in the old space.

The center can now offer cooking classes and teach individuals how to wash and dry their own clothes, said Erica Wright, lead life skills instructor.

“It’s beautiful,” Wright said. “We’re able to provide more meaningful opportunities for people.”

The old space, basically a big room with dividers, didn’t offer much privacy or the ability to conduct multiple programs simultaneously, Zoeller said.

“Even though we had dividers, you still didn’t have rooms with doors to close,” she said.

“It would get loud and disruptive.”

The Ray Graham Association has six community learning centers across DuPage County, including locations in Elmhurst and Downers Grove.

The centers opened about a decade ago out of a necessity to

serve people with developmental disabilities close to where they live, Zoeller said.

“We really try to serve people in their own communities so that when they’re out and about, they’re building relationships,” she said.

The centers are multi-functional facilities used as hubs that focus on aiding people with community volunteering efforts, employment opportunities and health and wellness curriculum, Zoeller said.

“We focus on personal growth and supporting people to really figure out what they want to do and where they see themselves professionally and as a person who wants to have a robust life.”

Dobbs recently entered the MobilityWorks Local Heroes contest, which will award three handicap-accessible vans to individuals living with a disability or who have dedicated their time to helping someone with a disability.

Both of those criteria apply for Dobbs, who last year was diagnosed as disabled after developing a hernia and arthritis, she said.

“I have developed a hernia through lifting Courtney,” Dobbs said, who occasionally uses a wheelchair herself to get around. “It’s very dangerous to get her in and out of the van.

We’re not out to get something that we don’t truly need.”

This is the third year MobilityWorks has offered the contest in conjunction with the National Mobility Equipment Dealer’s Association’s (NMEDA) National Mobility Month, and the third year Dobbs has submitted an entry.

This year, however, instead of entering Courtney, Dobbs entered herself as a contestant, believing b she may have better luck since she is the licensed driver.

Courtney, a junior at Glenbard East High School, is nonverbal, but communicates with her family, friends and teachers by using sounds and hand movements. She is very aware of what is happening around her, and very sociable, Dobbs said.

“She loves people,” Dobbs said. “She may not talk but she expresses herself in a lot of ways. I just wish I could do more for her.”

Clara’s Pasta keeps family traditions fresh WOODRIDGE – Walking into Clara’s Pasta, I was greeted by friendly smiles and a palette of rich, warm colors giving the large restaurant a cozy feel.

While the long-running dining destination in Woodridge has built its reputation on fresh-made pasta and Italian cooking that’s been passed down for generations, it also has created a charmingly modern and inviting setting in its new location.

Dark woods and clean lines make the space appealing for an intimate dinner or a night out with the whole family.

My companion and I dropped by for an early dinner during the week, and were seated right away at a spacious booth.

Our cheerful waiter brought over warm rolls to dip in olive oil infused with spices and Parmesan cheese. I had to remind myself to save room for the rest of the meal.

Otherwise, I might have asked for another basket.

While my companion finished an appetizer of toasted “Old World” bread topped with diced tomatoes, Fontinella cheese and pesto called Bruschetta di Roma, I started on a house salad with Italian dressing. It was simple, but tasty.

For dinner, I ordered one of the house specialties, Cream of Chicken Pesto. Our waiter brought the large plate of sliced chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and roasted pine nuts sautéed in Clara’s fresh pesto sauce with a hint of cream.

The richly flavored treat is served over fresh angel hair pasta. I didn’t know which tidbit to try first, but with a piece of chicken on my fork, I swirled up some pasta and took a bite. Heavenly.

My companion was thrilled with all of the meatless options, and settled on the stuffed shells. He soon cleared his plate of the three large pasta shells filled with seasoned ricotta cheese topped with mozzarella and baked in homemade tomato sauce.

We were each happy with the pesto and tomato sauces we chose, but Clara’s also allows guests to choose from more than a dozen different homemade pastas and top them off with one of 12 sauces.

On a second visit, I imagine the spicy arribiatta marinara made with crushed red peppers, Tabasco and chopped garlic may end up on my plate.

The veal chop Parmigiana also sounded tantalizing.

Clara’s takes a 14-ounce, bone-in veal chop and grills it to medium. It’s served over marinara sauce and topped with golden brown mozzarella, Fontinella, Romano and Parmesan cheeses. Radiatori pasta and tomato sauce are served on the side.

Throughout dinner, our waiter always made sure we

had a refill on our soft drinks before we had a chance to ask.

We never needed to look for him, but he wasn’t a bother either.

While I’m a pesto fan, and Clara’s Cream of Chicken Pesto surpassed my expectations, I already have a few dishes I’d like to taste next time. Even without the entree, I’d go back

seasoned oil. I’m sure I could have eaten the entire basket myself.

Spotlighting highlights for area schools

The two District 88 schools, Addison Trail and Willowbrook, had a number of standout athletes and accomplishments during the winter sports season, so before spring kicks into full gear, here’s a last look back at those winter successes, in no particular order.

1. Willowbrook girls basketball wins first conference title since 1996 After coming up one game short of sharing the West Suburban Gold title a year ago, Willowbrook girls basketball made no mistakes in the Gold this season.

The Warriors went 12-0 in conference play to win the outright conference title for the first time since 1996. Willowbrook finished the season 23-5 after losing in a regional final.

Senior Molly Krawczykowski led the team in scoring and was key to the team’s success.

Fellow seniors Olivia Domin, Melissa Rader and Lauren Carroll were also main contributors.

“This group of seniors is the winningest group of seniors in Willowbrook in 18 years,” Harrell said. “In their two years on varsity they’ve won 45 games.”

2. Carson, Gomez represent AT wrestling at state Two Addison Trail senior wrestlers and two best friends, Bobby Carson and Niko Rocha, got to share a trip to Champaign as state qualifiers.

Rocha was returning for his second trip to state while Carson was making his debut on high school wrestling’s biggest stage.

“It’s great, especially because we’re actually real close,” Carson said of going to state with Rocha. “He’s like my cousin, almost. We do everything together.”

3. Rowland takes first steps to matching brother Willowbrook sophomore wrestler Matt Rowland is trying to at least match the impressive accomplishments of his older brother, Dan. Dan was second in state a year ago and this winter Matt showed he can be as

good or better.

Matt Rowland was fifth at 152 pounds at the state tournament to earn an all-state medal.

He was 46-6 on the season.

“It feels pretty good,” Rowland said at state. “It’s a good way to end my coach’s career because he’s retiring after this season. And to go out with a win is great.”

He was joined at state by senior Jake Kroeger, who went 1-2 at 182 pounds.

In their own pre-holiday tournament, the Blazers knocked off then-undefeated Stagg and later won against conference foe Morton, both in home games. The win over Morton was especially impressive because after that loss the Mustangs won 13 games in a row and made a sectional final.

6. Schmelter bowls at state Addison Trail senior Meghan Schmelter qualified for state bowling and was able to crack the top 100. She finished 89th with an average score of 187.8, for a six-game total of 1,127.

Montini, Willowbrook looking for repeat strong seasons

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Softball teams are forced to deal with the fickle March weather at the beginning of the season, but the first scheduled games started last weekend for teams lucky enough to find an indoor or turf field.

Here’s a look at what the area teams should look like in the season ahead.

Addison Trail Blazers Coach: Mark Olson 2013 record: 11-19 Top players:

Outlook: Three all-conference returners should lead the Blazers this season. Senior infielders Crystal Marinelli and Danielle Ciaglia and junior outfielder Ari Renc make up the core of a team hoping to improve on a 4-8 record in the West Suburban Gold.

Juniors Kelly Delawder, Alex DiSilvio and Rachel Baumgartner and sophomore Carla Muell are also returning starters. “[We] return seven starters from last season, including all three all-conference players and the top three hitters in Marinelli, Renc and Ciaglia,” coach Mark Olson said. “We’re expecting strong seasons offensively and defensively from Delawder, DiSilvio, Muell and Baumgartner.”

Despite all the returners, many of the key players on the team are still younger. Senior Cori Cooney will play at catcher to join Ciaglia and Marinelli as senior starters.

Glenbard South, a power program. Simpson is fresh off a four-year career at the University of Illinois and wants to get the Rams to focus on small ball.

“Small ball is definitely important to the game,” Simpson said. “It depends on the situation and the team we’re playing. We do have some good hitters, and we do have some speedy runners, too.”

Seniors Dana Camp (first baseman), Grace Miller (pitcher), and outfielders Carissa Slobodecki and Kelli Tyler give the team a veteran core.

Sophomores DoniBrooke Ross (shortstop), Marissa West (second baseman) and Kailey Lyons (center fielder) represent the future of the program.

“It’s definitely going to set us up for the future, which I’m excited about,” Simpson said.

Simpson’s focus is on getting excitement back in the program.

“Coaching is definitely different than playing,” Simpson said. “Sometimes I wish I could play. I just want to give the girls the knowledge I’ve learned.”

Outlook: With five returning all-state players and nine returners in total, Montini looks to be a dangerous team in Class 3A this season.

Two-time all-state pitcher Lauren Trojnar is back for her junior year in the circle.

Hitters Sara Ross, Cristina Barrett, Alyssa Sclafani and Isabell Alexander also were all-state selections last year.

Other returners include Morganne Evans and Emily Lezcano. Evans will move from right field, where she played the last two seasons, to third base.

Coach Richie Costante expects the team to start just

two seniors and three juniors with the rest being sophomores. However, all of those players have at least a year of varsity experience.

“This is the first year that we don’t have a freshman starting since I’ve been here,” Costante said. “That’s a good thing. Every girl that’s starting on the field has been on varsity since their freshman year. We still might be young in terms of sophomores and juniors, but they all have experience.”

As for the seniors, Barrett is headed to play for Western Illinois. Ross is bound for IUPUI to continue her basketball career. Despite basketball being her priority and future focus, Ross still came out for one more year of softball, with some flexibility coming from the Montini coaching staff.

Costante is putting an emphasis on the conference season.

“We want to win conference, which we haven’t done in the past three years,” Costante said. “We have to get past the St. Francis jinx.”

Outlook: Armed with talented juniors Alyssa Ressinger and Sam Schmidt and a number of returners, Willowbrook is hoping for another strong season.

The Warriors will have to replace Darian Pelsor, who was the team’s ace and a top hitter last year. However, her junior sister Delaney returns in the circle along with Montini transfer Zoe Dannenberg, who was on the Broncos’ varsity last year.

Schmidt, a Northern Illinois commit, and Ressinger give the Warriors a pair of powerful bats in the middle of the lineup. The team doesn’t feature many seniors but still has plenty of experience from the younger returning players.

She was first to convert a penalty kick in the semifinal of the Windy City Classic against Fenwick on Wednesday and had three goals and three assists in the first four games of the tournament. The Rams next play Lincoln-Way North in the tournament final at Toyota Park Saturday at noon. Paganucci, this week’s the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about her key penalty kick, making the final and the team’s early success.

Have you practiced penalties much in preparation for this

tournament?

We’ve been practicing it so I knew what I was doing and where my placement is.

How are you feeling about the team’s hot start?

It’s really exciting, especially coming out in the very beginning because we have a couple new players. It’s different playing with them and I have a new forward playing up top with me so it’s different, but I’m getting used to it.

What’s the transition been like becoming more of the team’s go-to forward?

It’s more my responsibility to make sure we’re organized and to stay calm and not to make silly fouls up top to get us in trouble.

Cantigny spring golf clinics in full swing SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Cantigny Golf Academy, in partnership with Callaway Golf Fitness, is hosting a series of ‘Spring Training’ workshops to help golfers tune up for the season ahead.

8SPORTS BRIEFS Chicago Bears youth NAYS to host spring basketball tournaments camps coming to area North American Youth Sports will host two youth basketball tournaments in the area this spring.

There will be NAYS tournaments at Elmhurst College from April 25 to 27 and at Romeoville High School from May 2 to 4.

The cost to enter each tournament is $160 per team and guarantees each squad a minimum of three games.

The entry deadline for the Elmhurst tournament is April 4 and the entry deadline for the Romeoville event is April 11.

2. VanderBrug dominates for Timothy boys Not many basketball players have the all-around game that Connor VanderBrug displayed this winter for Timothy Christian boys basketball.

The Trojan senior is 6-foot6 and played all five positions on the floor at different times this season. He averaged 21.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. Despite being

Sophomore Rhashaun Epting was the Suburban Christian Gold Player of the Year after averaging 19.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

“We were excited to win the regional and get the monkey off our back after losing the last two by two points each,” coach T.J. Tyrrell said.
