The third-grader admits she was a little scared, but her mom recalls the minute the family was allowed back in the house, Kylie was chatting away with firefighters, telling them what had happened.

“It was very reassuring that she helped me out,” Cindy Fiermuga said.

Danny was at work when the fire happened, but he got home before the firefighters left. A police officer himself, he was proud of Kylie’s response during the emergency.

Among the firefighter-paramedics from the Addison Fire Protection District who responded to the Fiermugas’ home was Mark Weller, Kylie’s public education teacher.

He’s been teaching public education courses for a handful of years, but he has never witnessed one of his students execute the skills they learned in class. Weller explained that sometimes it can be difficult to tell if students are understanding everything they talk about, but Kylie’s experience was reassuring.

ADDISON – At the smell of smoke, 9-year-old Kylie Fiermuga scooped up her dog to meet her mom and sister at the tree in the parkway outside their home, just like they’d practiced two weeks ago. Except this time, it wasn’t a drill.

“We just sat down to double-check homework and get ready for bed,” said Cindy Fiermuga, who was home with her daughters, Kylie and Kasey, 12, when she smelled smoke.

Just before 9 p.m. April 29, the Fiermugas’ dryer caught on fire, filling the house with smoke. But with Kylie’s escape plan fresh in their minds, they all made it out safely, including Smokey the dog, who was named long before the fire.

“She was completely calm,” Fiermuga said.

Fiermuga and her husband, Danny, had helped Kylie put her escape plan together as part of a homework assignment for the public education course the Addison Fire Protection District gives Addison third-graders each year.

Kylie, who attends Stone Elementary School, said she never thought she would have to use the plan, but she still drew up the map of her house, des-

Kasey had gone through the same program three years earlier and the family had practiced an escape plan, but Cindy Fiermuga said the recent refresher with Kylie definitely helped.

The Fiermugas are still waiting to hear back from their insurance company about repair costs, but the fire did little structural damage before it was put out, although Fiermuga said there was plenty of smoke damage.

“It could have been a lot more devastating had they not gotten out of the house,” Weller said.

Cindy Fiermuga was thankful that while they were all in their pajamas, no one had gone to bed yet.

To honor Kylie’s bravery and levelheadedness, Weller – along with a slew of other firefighters, including Fire Chief Donald Markowski – presented Kylie with an award in front of her classmates during their final day of fire safety class on Monday.

With a bashful smile, Kylie admitted the congratulations felt good, but she said her reaction was simple.

“I did what I was supposed to do,” Kylie said.

Addison ends electrical aggregation program SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ADDISON – The village of Addison has ended its electrical aggregation program after failing to secure a 12-month rate that would guarantee a cost savings for residents.

Residents who have had Integrys Energy Group as their electricity supplier through the program have received notice that effective in June, Integrys no longer will be their supplier, according to a village

news release.

Residents may choose for themselves which company they would like to be their supplier. For the time being, the village will return to ComEd as the supplier, but residents will have two full billing cycles to determine if they can find a lower rate on their own and contract with another company, the release stated.

ComEd rates will be 7.596 cents a kilowatt-hour for the summer months (June

through September) and 7.42 cents per kWh in the winter (September through May).

Other electricity suppliers, including Integrys, offered rates of more than 8 cents to the village for the next contract year, according to the release.

Since electrical aggregation began in 2012 in Addison, the village has entered into only one-year contracts to review ComEd’s rates annually. In two years with Integrys as its electrical aggregation suppli-

er, residents have saved more than $2.5 million, but the gap between ComEd’s supply rate and that of other suppliers has closed, the release stated.

Since the village cannot guarantee savings to residents, the decision now is up to each of them.

Addison suggests residents consider termination fees, terms and conditions of the contract, and any additional monthly fees that may be added to a seemingly lower rate.

Residents who do not wish to remain with ComEd need to sign an agreement with a new supplier 20 days before their August bill date. If they do nothing, their electricity will be supplied by ComEd until at least June 2015. The village plans to revisit the idea of electric aggregation then, according to the release.

Republican legislators seek voter input on tax increase extension SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, and Rep. Dennis Reboletti, R-Elmhurst, are part of a group of House and Senate Republicans who introduced legislation Tuesday that would put a statewide advisory referendum on the November ballot asking voters whether the 5-percent temporary income tax increase should become per-

manent.

“A number of issues are expected to be placed on the ballot in November as a way to gauge public sentiment,” said Reboletti, whose district includes parts of Addison and Wood Dale, in a news release. “The proposal we are introducing today would ask the voters to decide whether or not the 5-percent ‘temporary’ income tax increase should be made permanent.

“Extending the income tax increase hits residents and small employers directly in the pocketbook. They deserve the opportunity to weigh in on the decision.”

All Republicans in the House and Senate oppose raising the income tax because “it does nothing to help the 550,000 unemployed Illinoisans to find work,” the release stated.

Illinois’ unemployment rate

of 7.9 percent, as of April 2014, is the second-worst jobless rate among the 50 states, according to the release.

By the time the 2011 income tax increase is set to expire in January 2015, it will have taken more than $31 billion from the pockets of working families and small businesses, the release stated.

“This non-binding advisory referendum would allow us to

poll the voters about how they feel about making the ‘temporary’ tax increase permanent,” Sandack said. “The increased taxes have cost the average family of four making around $50,000 about $1,000 annually. They have had to make sacrifices on necessities for their families.

Before any vote is taken to extend or make the ‘temporary’ tax permanent, the voters should have their voices heard.”

ADDISON – The Addison Lions Club recently formed the Leo Club at Addison Trail High School, creating the only Leo Club in Illinois where all members have a visual impairment.

The club offers students opportunities to expand on their leadership and teamwork skills, and it includes 22 members from the School Association for Special Educa-

cial records. Club members also contribute in the planning and preparation of club fundraisers.

Proceeds help the group fund various projects and activities, according to a District 88 newsletter.

The Leo Club allows students with visual impairments to understand the impact they can make on the world and gives them the confidence to succeed outside of Addison Trail, the release stated.

Legislators react after judge delays state pension law

ELMHURST – The state fight for a solution to its pension problems took another turn last week when a Sangamon County judge decided to delay its latest effort.

On May 14, Judge John Beliz ordered a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the reforms set out in Senate Bill 1, which cuts cost of living increases, lowers contributions required of current employees, guarantees state contributions and raises retirement ages for state workers.

There currently are several suits challenging the constitutionality of the measure signed by Gov. Pat Quinn in December. The Illinois Constitution currently states that contractual benefits of state workers “shall not be diminished or impaired.”

“This is an important first

step in our efforts to overturn this unfair, unconstitutional law and to protect retirement security for working and retired Illinois families,” said Michael T. Carrigan, president of the Illinois AFL-CIO, in a statement on behalf of worker coalition We Are One Illinois.

Beliz ruled on a lawsuit filed by the Illinois State Employees Association Retirees and several other plaintiffs.

In his official filing, Beliz said that the there was sufficient evidence those named in the suit would “suffer irreparable harm” if the injunction was not issued. Implementation statewide will now be held until Beliz or a higher court decides on the constitutionality of the law.

Thanks for another wonderful school year It’s hard to believe another school year is coming to an end, but on June 8, we will graduate nearly 1,000 students from DuPage High School District 88.

It has been another wonderful year filled with many accomplishments, and we know those successes are because of our knowledgeable and supportive Board of Education, our COMMUNITY dedicated and passionate VOICE staff, our engaged students Scott and our involved parents and Helton community members. It truly takes a team to build futures for the students of District 88, and I thank you for your partnership. Below are five highlights from the 2013-14 school year.

1. Preliminary numbers show about 90 percent of the class of 2014 at District 88’s high schools, Addison Trail and Willowbrook, has been accepted to a two- or four-year college or university.

2. More students than ever enrolled in Advanced Placement courses this year, which allow students to earn college credit while in high school.

3. So far this year, 68 student-athletes from District 88 have qualified for Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state competitions, and one student-athlete received All-American recognition. In the West Suburban Conference, District 88 has won six conference titles, and 41 student-athletes from District 88 have signed to play their sport at the collegiate level.

4. Our students and staff continue to give back to their communities. They raised more than $50,000 for the American Cancer Society, hosted blood drives to benefit LifeSource and once again participated in the Park Pride Cleanup in Addison and the Salt Creek Cleanup in Addison and Villa Park.

5. We joined together with the county to educate students, parents and community members about the heroin epidemic in the county and state. We hosted a Student Leadership Symposium, where students from 23 schools from throughout DuPage County gathered to discuss how to combat this issue. We also hosted public symposiums at each school.

Because of those successes, Addison Trail and Willowbrook have once again been recognized by The Washington Post as two of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” and ranked in the top 6 percent of U.S. public high schools for 2014. District 88 has been ranked in the challenge index for seven consecutive years, since 2008. The end of the school year is a wonderful time to acknowledge all you do for our students. Thank you for helping us accomplish our mission of working for the continuous improvement of student achievement.

I was at Lilacia Park this morning in Lombard, and a worker there was spraying the faded tulips (bloom was done) with Roundup (glyphosate). I asked why, and he said it helps them [helps restore color]. Is this really necessary? Do we have to have everything look perfect?

Such a beautiful place seems natural, but then you learn they think they have to manipulate things with chemicals. Do we really need more chemicals in our ground, which eventually go into the waterways? Glyphosate has been linked to more than 20 adverse health effects, including birth defects, infertility and cancer.

Questioning D-58 stats On the Opinions page in the May 14 Downers Grove Suburban Life, James Eichmiller shares with us some feelings and findings of the District 58 Technology Program. He said student achievement approved as measured by the math testing. How do we know the improvement was caused by technology? Could good teaching have caused the gain? He then said collaboration, ownership, engagement, staff flexibility and choice also increased. Again, could good teaching have caused these improvements? I am not sure you can state that all of these gains are from a take-home technology program. I am not sure we can afford to give every student a device to use at school and at home. Our taxes are going up, we have pension obligations to meet and we need to show some type of fiscal restraint.

No need for library renovation in Lemont I am at the Lemont library on a regular basis for various reasons and agree with others who have written to Sound Off. I love our library and what it offers. But there is absolutely no need for remodeling, additional meeting rooms, computers, etc. Even the funds already spent for analyzing the “needs” was not necessary. The governing bodies of Lemont need to make more frugal decisions with our tax money. If you’re “looking” for ways to spend tax money, it could be better spent elsewhere in our community. I don’t think there’s a need for examples.

Lombard’s Got Talent!

This new talent completion replaces the former Just Sing competition. Lombard’s Got Talent will take place on the 4th of July on the main stage from 3pm-5pm at the Taste of Lombard. There will be three categories: Singing, Dance and Comedy.

Anyone that would like to participate in the competition must audition. Auditions will be held on Sunday, June 8th at Enchanted Castle in Lombard. Auditions will begin at 9:30am and everyone who would like to audition must pre-register as time slots will be assigned to everyone auditioning. Performance must be a minimum of 3 minutes, max is ive minutes. Song choice is up to you so choose wisely.

Dance- must be 12 years of age and older. Routines must be 3-5 minutes long and you need to provide your own music on a CD clearly labeled with your name. Music on the CD should be the only music and should be the length of your routine. Participants may perform solo, in a duo, trio or in a group. Max number of people for a group is 7, no exceptions. Participants must sign a waiver. No acrobatics will be allowed in routines.

Comedy- must be 18 years of age and older and be able to provide a valid photo ID. Must perform solo and material must be original. Three minutes will be given for monologues, no profanity or disrespecting the country will be allowed.

Please note: Those that make it through to the competition on the 4th of July will be notiied on Wednesday, June 11th. A mandatory rules meeting and group photo will be held on Wednesday, June 18th at 7pm at the Lombard Jaycees Clubhouse.

ADDISON – Senior Abby Meinen was named Addison Trail High School’s May recipient of the 88’s Best recognition for her academic accomplishments.

At the end of her senior year, Meinen will have successfully completed 11 Advanced Placement and 10 honors classes. Meinen is a two-time member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar with honors and an Illinois State Scholar, according to a District 88 newsletter.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. Troop 46 Scoutmaster Jeff Baeder, who teaches high school science, said he was happy to see the Three Fires Council put on the event.

“I think it is a great idea to have all the hands-on activities and explore what can be done and be challenged by it,” Baeder said. “It’s also nice for them to see some of the jobs they can do in the field of science.”

“We anticipated a tough legal challenge which is why we planned ahead and did not expect to realize any savings in Fiscal Year 2015, so this ruling has no real impact on the budget or pensions at this time,” Durkin said in a statement. “Ultimately, the real question will be addressed by the Supreme Court because whoever is on the losing end of the lawsuit will appeal to the higher court.”

Sushi House’s signature selections on a roll DOWNERS GROVE – Good sushi restaurants can be hard to find in the Midwest.

It’s usually not a matter of technique, but freshness.

Even the best restaurants can sometimes fall short because they don’t have access to high quality fish, obviously the key component in a dish that often consists of only raw protein, rice and seaweed.

The Sushi House in downtown Downers Grove proves a worthy entry on the suburban sushi scene. Its interior hearkens very much to the classic sushi setting – serene design, occasional pieces of Japanese artwork on the walls, and the sushi chef station right at the center of the action.

At a cursory glance, the menu is also fairly traditional – the typical, three- or four-ingredient basic roll, sashimi and nigiri on one side and the flashier rolls on the other.

There also are a number of regular entrees, including a couple of intriguing bento box combinations.

To experience the full gamut, our table ordered the lunch combination and one of the fancy rolls.

The combo included a basic tuna roll and spicy salmon rolls, as well as a cup of miso soup. The tuna had good texture, but my preference was the salmon. It melted in your mouth, while a nice bite of cucumber added a refreshing crunch to the wrap. The spicy mayo was understated.

Looking at the “signature rolls” part of the menu was overwhelming, but in the best possible way. I always feel a little intimidated by the depth of ingredient options at whatever sushi restaurant I am at – Sushi House’s 2011 Roll alone is topped with four different kinds of caviar.

There always seems to be a hint of a dare contained in that half of the menu. As if the sushi place is saying, “You want to get your socks knocked off? Here’s the best we got. Try to not enjoy eating these rolls.”

Sushi House, nestled in downtown Downers Grove, offers a diverse menu of both basic and intricate sushi offerings, as well as several options for those who aren’t fans of raw fish.

The Spicy Angel Roll was a delightful indulgence, marrying zesty fla- meaning Sushi House won that particular dare. vors with quality seafood.

I decided to go with the Spicy Angel Roll. When it came to the table, I was appropriately impressed. When I put it in my mouth, I was giddy.

The roll had it all – tempura shrimp, octopus, tuna, scallop and avocado. Inside was some of the spicy mayo I had wanted more of in the salmon roll, providing a creamy and lightly spicy base. Alongside the fish in the middle was a

small line of roe for a nice salty snap. On top was a sweet and smokey sauce and pickled jalapeño.

All together, it came out hitting multiple levels of spiciness without overwhelming the seafood flavors. It was definitely the dish that drove me from contentedly full to stuffed, because I just needed to have those last two pieces.

It completely elevated the meal from solid to very good,

Adding to the comfortable ambiance, the server was attentive without being pushy – stopping by to refill my water and take my order when I closed my menu.

The restaurant also gets a special shout-out for having real pickled ginger, the spicy white version instead of the tame and tangy pinkish stuff most places put out. It’s a small thing, but makes a big difference. It also has a patio that looks amazingly appeal-

ing, and will only look better as the weather improves.

All in all, Sushi House is a nice experience with good to very good food offerings. I would love to return and let the signature roll menu continue to bowl me over.

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ADDISON – The progression of Addison Trail’s softball team during the regular season the past two years has been obvious. Now, the Blazers need to show the progression in the postseason.

As the No. 13 seed in the very tough Bartlett sectional, the Blazers have an uphill battle to do so, but the team should be riding an emotional high after an impressive comeback win Monday against Willowbrook.

AT scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to win 7-4 against its District 88 rivals.

“We kind of caught some lightning in a bottle there and got the momentum and it all panned out for us,” coach Mark Olson said. “We just found every hole.”

The Blazers entered Thursday’s game against Niles North with a 19-15 record, which is well beyond the 13 wins AT won in the last two seasons combined.

“The steps and the progress the girls have taken, that’s what you love to see,” Olson said. “This season has been incredibly successful in what we’ve accomplished and how we’ve played overall other than one or two bad days. The first Willowbrook game was a bad day for us, as was the Downers Grove South game [on May 7, a 19-1 loss], but other than that we’ve been competitive.”

Last year, the Blazers entered a regional semifinal game as a No. 12 seed but lost to Bartlett 9-1. The forgettable performance was a learning experience for the team.

Olson is hoping this more experienced group will be more ready for the postseason.

The Blazers will have a regional quarterfinal against Larkin, the lowest seed in the regional, to initiate them into the postseason, and they are the favorite to win the game.

“We’re happy that we have a play-in game because last year we had a young team and we had a lot of jitters going into that playoff game,” Olson said.

Senior Crystal Marinelli continues to be a rock for the team in the lineup. In addition to pitching, Marinelli was hitting .490 entering Wednesday’s Hinsdale South game.

“She is just an incredible athlete,” Olson said. “We have to play her probably out of position as our No. 1 pitcher, but she has done incredible things with the bat. She has those intangibles. You watch her play and she plays so hard. She’s been the glue for us.”

I don’t think it was necessarily easier. It’s always just a close game between them and us. It’s just about the chances that we have and finishing them off.

I was focusing on club soccer last year and my sophomore year. I wanted to play this year because it was my senior year. I kind of did wish I was a part of it, but what can you do?

GIRLS SECTIONALS Willowbrook The Warriors will have two representatives at the state meet, which takes place today and Saturday at Eastern Illinois. Molly Krawczykowski won the 800-meter run at the Wheaton Warrenville South sectional and is seeded fifth entering the Class 3A state meet.

Fellow senior Taylor Burton was second in the 400 to also book a place at state. Willowbrook was fifth at the meet.

Addison Trail Kaleen Smith qualified for state in two events, including the long jump and the 100-meter dash, by placing second in both events at the Wheaton Warrenville South sectional.

Freshman Lauren Kroll is state-bound after taking second in the 200, and AT’s 4x100-meter relay also is headed to Charleston after taking second.

The Blazers were sixth at the sectional.

Matt Burns led the way with titles in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, and he was second in the long jump.

Jimmy Funteas won the 3,200 and took second in the 1,600. Donnie Hawkins won the 300-meter hurdles and placed third in the 110 hurdles.

Other high finishers were Dylan Jones (second, 100), Jake Bloemke (third, 400) Devin Childress (second, 110 hurdles), Hayden Adams (third, triple jump) and Elijah Rochelle (third, discus).

The 4x100 relay won a conference title and the 4x200 was second.

Addison Trail The Blazers’ 4x800-meter relay and Ronald Duling (high jump) won conference titles at the West Suburban gold meet.

Jaavion Bradley also was third in the high jump. Other top-three finishers were Darrion Conrad (second, 200), Darius Conrad (third, 100), Israel Olascoaga (second, 300 hurdles) and Juan Valdez (third, 800).

The Broncos have two relays and six individual entries to the Class 2A state meet.

Montini won the 4x800-meter relay and was second in the 4x400 at the Glenbard South sectional. Sectional champs were Jasmine Woodley (discus), Brittany Fisher (800) and Madeline Jamrozek (400). Other state qualifiers were Gianna Salzbrunn (long Glenbard East Jack Peters took second jump, 300-meter hurdles) and in the 800-meter run at the Maggie Hallerud (3,200).

Diet trend offers healthy benefits One particularly healthful diet trend is the Mediterranean diet, so named after the tastes and habits of the people living around the Mediterranean Sea. Brine for two hours in a half gallon of water and a quarter cup of salt. Rinse under the tap and pat dry.

Make breading mix by combining flour, garlic, baking powder and soda, pepper, salt, buttermilk and pepper sauce if using. Dip steak into egg and then breading mix. Then repeat.

Skillet-fry beef in pairs in a quarter inch of oil or shortening for six to seven minutes.

Transfer to a platter and keep warm. Prepare gravy (see below).

Pour gravy over steaks and serve with mashed potatoes and a vegetable. Serves 4.
