BOLINGBROOK – The Bolingbrook Police Department responded to a report of domestic trouble at 12:52 a.m. Christmas day in the 400 block of South Palmer Drive, according to Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa. When they arrived at the home, officers requested additional units while a woman greeted them at the door, motioning for them to hurry inside, Rompa said in a department news release. Upon entering, police saw several people fighting in the living room, according to Rompa. The officers attempted to break up the fight, which resulted in a physical altercation between two involved parties and the police. Juan Espinoza Jr., 24, and Juan Espinoza Sr., 49, both of 402 S. Palmer Drive, were charged with domestic battery, aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated resisting arrest. Ricardo Espinoza, 28, of 402 S. Palmer Drive, was charged with domestic battery, aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated resisting arrest and damaging state supported property. Rosa M. Espinoza, 46, of 402 S. Palmer Drive, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and resisting arrest. Erika Espinoza, 19, and James K. Faught, 22, both of 119 Clyde Ave., in Evanston, were charged with resisting and obstructing but were released on bond. Backup units arrived and assisted the responding police, Rompa said in the release. Two officers sustained minor injuries while involved in the fight. Their equipment was also damaged. A medic was called for Ricardo Espinoza, who was transported to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital for a head injury.

Ask Dr. Webster

Q: Can you offer any tips on floss and flossing? A: There are a few factors you should be aware of when selecting and using the floss that’s right for you. For the most part, deciding whether to use waxed, unwaxed, flavored or plain floss is a matter of personal preference. Floss is meant as a supplement to--not a replacement for-- your toothbrush. It lets you get into those spaces the brush’s bristles can’t reach. One thing to keep in mind when buying, though, is that if your teeth are set very close together, you’re better off with waxed floss. It is less likely to snag and fray in the narrow space. Whichever type you choose, the method for using floss to its greatest effect remains the same: wind the ends of a piece of floss around your forefingers and pull it taut. Slip the floss between teeth and pull it down to the gum line. Pull the floss into a “C” shape and get it between the tooth and the gum. Then, pressing against the tooth, pull the floss up-or down, depending on which teeth you’re cleaning. You are trying to remove the plaque on the side of the teeth, an area where a brush is less effective. Don’t saw the floss back and forth. Keep unwinding the floss a bit as you go from tooth to tooth so that you are always using a clean section. Dental floss, by the way, has been on the market since 1882. Talk with your dentist about its effective use.

Two of Illinois’ biggest and most controversial laws passed in 2013 – concealed carry permits and medicinal marijuana – officially take effect Jan. 1. However, their impact won’t be seen for months, according to government agencies. Illinois State Police will accept online applications to carry a concealed handgun starting Jan. 5 and recently announced the acceptance of paper applications beginning July 1. More than 2,000 registered concealed carry instructors are already listed on the State Police website, said spokesperson Monique Bond, but the first permits won’t be issued until early April. “It could be sooner, but we are going to use the full 90 days to give us enough time to make sure we do it right,” Bond said. In order to obtain a standard five year concealed carry permit, Illinois residents must already have a Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card, pay a $150 fee, submit to a background check and undergo 16 hours of firearm training with a certified instructor. Applications will be processed by State Police, which will issue or deny the card within 90 days. Denied applications will be reviewed by the governor-appointed Concealed Carry Licensing Board. For similar reasons, medicinal marijuana will not be accessible until well past Jan. 1. Not only will there be a time lapse to process applications for distribution and cultivation centers, said Illinois Department of Public Health spokesperson Melaney Arnold, but government agencies are still determining the specifics of the law’s implementation. “I would like to give a time frame, but there are so many moving pieces,” Arnold said. “We’re working as quickly as we can to get it out.” The Department of Public

BOLINGBROOK – While B.J. Ward has benefited from excellent volunteers in recent years, the Bolingbrook elementary school has taken volunteering to new heights with a Parent Volunteer Team program that was launched this school year. “It’s important to get parents into the building,” Assistant Principal Susan Padilla said. “It’s helped change the culture in our building.” Originally launched as Helping Hands a few years ago, the program encouraged parents to do simple tasks like collating paperwork, listening to kids read or helping in the library. But with parent participation lower than they had hoped for, Padilla and Principal Ted Warpinski decided to take a parent survey. “We didn’t know if they weren’t coming in because they were too busy or if they were intimidated or what,” Padilla said.

What they found out was many parents wanted to help but felt they needed some training first. So Ward administrators made some changes. “We’re more concerned about their heart than we are their skills,” Padilla said. “If you love students, you can never go wrong. Everyone has some talent. We just needed to find a way to let them shine.” Members of Ward’s Parent Volunteer Team now must fill out some paperwork that Padilla uses to determine their interests and their comfort levels. Ward administrators are hopeful more parents will sign up to help for the remainder of this year. In fact, Padilla dreams of having two or three parent volunteers from each grade level in the building as often as possible next year. “We need to focus on building the Ward community,” Padilla said. “Maintaining that wonderful connection between home and school is so important.”

As we look back on 2013, we see it was an exciting year with a lot of new things going on, including successes for our participants, staff and friends. I hope you have learned about a few of them here in this column. We have had participants win awards, sports honors and even a legislative victory for students with disabilities. Our disability awareness COMMUNITY program was started to help VOICE our community learn about Karen what it is like to live with Gestautas a disability. We recently launched “Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies,” with our cooperative member agencies. It sets out to specifically assist veterans in fitness and friendship. Shortly after the holiday 2012 season, we began planning our annual bowling fundraiser (which has been taking place in February – brrr!). We decided, for 2014, to move bowling to springtime. So on Feb. 22, we will host, along with Romeoville Chamber of Commerce, a Trivia Craze fundraiser. It looks to be a fun night and, we’re hoping, a successful one, too. If you’re not familiar with the concept, a trivia night pits groups of folks against each other to answer questions asked in categories. You can sign up as a team of eight or come in a smaller group and we’ll help you form a team of new friends. Everyone is an expert at something so bring your “experts” and let’s have a great evening full of laughs together. And don’t forget about bowling later in the year! Watch our website for all fundraising and other updates. Last year’s Summer Day Camp not only provided our school-age participants with a rewarding group of activities after school adjourns, but it gave our part-time staff a wonderful opportunity to log in hours of experience running it. And we all got to enjoy the talent show that caps off the camp experience. If you know someone or if you would like to help us parttime or volunteer, please look at the applications available to download from our website. By the way, our website was newly designed in the past year and it has so much information on it. News and events are updated often so you can stay in touch with us. Looking back on 2013, it is with great warmth and gratefulness that we thank all who support us in so many ways. Good luck to all in 2014.

8SOUND OFF Response to Obama bashing This is for the caller about the [Nelson] Mandela letter who was upset with the newspaper because they print [Barack] Obama bashing. Well, Obama is a liar. If you don’t have anything more as a defense than Bush and Cheney, which was six years ago, then you have no defense at all. Move on. Here is my red line. I am drawing it. Don’t cross it. But never mind, Obama moves his red line all the time anyway.

Well, you make an interesting argument that teens need a break, but I don’t agree with you. Sure you think I may sound like someone’s parent, but I am not. I am 33 and I was in your

shoes at one point. You should appreciate your parents keeping you busy because work builds character and makes you a responsible individual. It also prepares you for the future. Do you really think when you’re in the working world you will get a Christmas vacation? Sure you might if you have paid time off, but some places may not even allow their employees to use that. Do you think when you graduate high school and college, life will give you a break? No way, it’s like a top 40 radio station – the hits just keep coming and by not getting a break now, you will be prepared for life when it won’t give you a break. The biggest positive to any parents keeping their teens busy is that they won’t do anything stupid such as drugs, alcohol or stealing Christmas decorations from people. If you want a break from chores around the house, consider doing some charity work, now is the time people are in need.

officer gets,” he said. Colleen Daley, executive director for the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence and an opponent of the bill, said while the law has some positives, such as increased background checks, extensive training requirements and prohibited locations, its effect is unclear. She expects to see lawsuits challenge the law, but said first, people need to be educated. “People are going to be around others who are carrying legal, loaded guns,” she said. “Some are deeply concerned, some aren’t, but the average citizen should

be aware that something like this is happening.” Dr. Eldon Trame, president of the Illinois State Medical Society, said many of the more than 12,000 current and retired doctors in his organization were taking a “wait and see” attitude toward medicinal marijuana and that members were neither encouraged nor discouraged from prescribing it. “Some physicians are very much in favor of the law and some are very much not in favor of the law,” he said. “But I, at least, will certainly have an open eye and open mind to this.”

Water bill out of control The water bills from [Downers Grove] are out of control. The community needs to get together in protest. We are a family of two. The bill is more than $100 for two months. How are people making it? Enough is enough. Come on people, let’s do something about it. Appears everyone has the money and no big deal?

Show of faith I thank Costello Jewelry Co. for blessing us with their Christmas ad in the Dec. 26 edition. It is refreshing to hear business owners who are not afraid to speak up for their faith. Thank you for the reminder of the true meaning

of Christmas. God bless you.

Attention: Fellow Dog Lover Happy New Year From Belle Aire Kennels & Grooming! It’s been a year now that I have been running our ad for a Free Grooming and we have had 100’s and 100’s of satisfied returning customers. Recently I was checking in with one of our new regulars, and she told me something that was really surprising. She told me she didn’t believe the Free Grooming was for real at first or there was some kind of catch somewhere. (Are you thinking that?) And luckily they finally gave us a call because a friend of theirs told them the free groom was for real. They had just tried us out months earlier and they were very happy with our service.

I get it…. in a world of bait and switch and under-delivering and over promising I can understand their caution and disbelief. Sometimes it takes a friend to give you the all clear it’s safe to give it a try.

recommend for your dog’s health and well-being keep using your regular groomer. SOOOO…If you have a dog that needs to be styled and groomed I invite you to give us a call to receive your free grooming.

With that said we have put in place a couple of conditions….

CALL 630-969-3145 we only have a few spots available a week.

We have found that people who live close to us come back to us (I know its rocket science). What I mean is if you’re looking for a free ride please go elsewhere…don’t call us from Joliet (we actually had someone from Florida request a free groom as well)…we want to become your trusted and regular groomer so you can have a great looking dog all the time.

If you don’t have a dog you can tell a friend about this Free Groom too. I certainly would be very thankful if you passed on our name. Our number again is: 630-969-3145 I will let you go now…I wish you a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

Also if your dog is really old and only gets groomed twice a year please use you regular groomer…. it is very stressful for an older dog to be groomed by a new person. We

Restaurant reviews

Spend an evening in South America at Rio’s ADDISON – One of the joys of living in this melting pot of a nation is that everyone comes here, and they bring their delicacies with them. I love American, Italian, Mexican, Thai and Japanese cuisine, along with several other varieties I’ve enjoyed over the years. But every once in a while, it’s fun to branch out by tasting something new. And something new is exactly what I found at Rio’s Fine South American Cuisine in Addison. Billed as a Peruvian restaurant on various websites, Rio’s also has delicacies from Argentina and Brazil that are sure to tempt your taste buds. When you first walk in, you’re greeted by a bar area that’s tasteful and hip, but not particularly ethnic. You could meet business clients for drinks here and they wouldn’t necessarily even recall that it was a South American establishment – unless they look closely at the wine list, which is filled with selections from all over the continent. Enter the dining area, though, and you’ll find yourself in a scene that’s both elegant and evocative of the dishes you’re about to sample. A massive mural across the back wall combines the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Other small decor touches give hints of South America without overwhelming the room and making it kitschy. I stopped by Rio’s on a recent evening with a dining companion, and I started right off with an authentic drink from south of the equator – a Dona Paula Sauvignon Blanc from Argentina, which the wine list describes as “bright, crisp, tart green apple skin, lime zest, guava, and grapefruit with a touch of minerality.” It proved to be a terrific accompaniment to the dishes that followed. We started with the Peruvian Sampler, wanting to

The sampler includes the ceviche de pescado (a Peruvian specialty), a tamale, anticucho de la pollo (chicken skewer), and papa a la huancaina (a savory sauce over boiled potatoes). I most enjoyed the flavorful

skewer, while my companion was a big fan of the tamale. When selecting an entree, I was immediately taken by the bright pictures of every dish on the menu. One item, the Pollo Enrollado, grabbed my attention right away. It fea-

spinach and cheese. The chicken is rolled in “panko” and topped with Algarrobina sauce. I expected something savory and was pleasantly surprised that it was more complex than that. “It’s got a sweetness to it,” my dining companion

remarked happily after trying a bite. My companion’s dish was even better, the Tallarin Verde con Churrasco. It included a generous helping of perfectly seasoned steak alongside fettucine mixed with Peruvian pesto (spinach, basil, white cheese, walnuts and olive oil). The steak and the pasta both tasted great on their own, but together the flavors were perfectly paired. We both really wanted dessert – interesting items included churros filled with caramel and hot chocolate dipping sauce, and ice cream made with Andean Lucuma fruit – but we were both too stuffed to properly enjoy it. That just means that next time I’ll have to – regretfully – forgo the Peruvian Sampler to save some room to try some exotic ice cream.

Bolingbrook’s C.J. Redmond guards a Joliet West player in a Dec. 13 home game. Team depth is part of the reason the Raiders are off to a strong start this season.

Depth charge By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Most high school basketball teams that lose a star player to graduation could be expected to struggle the following season. Bolingbrook’s boys basketball team is bucking the trend. Ben Moore was one of the best players ever to suit up for the Raiders. After last season, he graduated and moved on to SMU, where he is playing as a freshman for legendary coach Larry Brown. To say that Bolingbrook has handled the transition well is putting it lightly.

“Everybody talks about Ben Moore, and rightly so,” head coach Rob Brost said. “He is one of the best to play at Bolingbrook, but we have a lot of good players on this team this year and we’re very deep. We have a lot of guys who have been big off the bench.” Bench players or starters, a team effort had Bolingbrook out to an 8-2 start before it closed out play at the McDipper holiday tournament Monday. Nearly the entire roster made major contributions through the first three tourney games. Shakur Triplett (16 points, seven rebounds) and Julian

Talent, deep bench key to Bolingbrook boys’ success on basketball court

Torres (11 points, 12 rebounds reached double figures in an 81-63 win over Crete-Monee in the first game. Kenny Williams (nine points off the bench), Prentiss Nixon (eight points, seven rebounds and six assists), and Josh Dillingham, C.J. Redmond and Devin Sams (five points apiece) also were key contributors. Williams and Nixon had 14 points, Gage Davis scored 13, and Dillingham tallied 12 as the Raiders topped Rich South, 66-59, in the second round. Nixon poured in 24 and Davis and Williams reached

double figures in a 71-67 tournament loss to Thornton on Saturday in a game that was actually closer than the final score. “It was a two-point game and we fouled them with two seconds to go,” Brost said. “We did not shoot free throws very well. We were 5 of 14. We’ve been shooting free throws at about 75 percent this season, so if we do that it’s a different game.” The Raiders were set to close out tourney play against a Joliet Central team they defeated, 59-51, in early December. Then comes an extended break until a Jan. 10 home

game against Lincoln-Way East. “We have eight days of practice coming up, which is kind of unheard of during the season to get eight in a row like that,” Brost said. “We really want to take the next week and a half and get after it in practice. A good, sustained effort in practice, and if we do that we’re going to become a much better team. “We’re looking forward to the second half of the season. We have the opportunity to be a good ball club if we get better, and I have every confidence in the world that’s going to happen.”

School: Downers Grove South Sport: Boys volleyball Place: State champs State run: The Mustangs were pushed to the brink with consecutive three-set postseason matches against Glenbard West (regional final), Naperville North (sectional semifinal), Neuqua Valley (sectional final) and Deerfield (state quarterfinal). After powering through in those challenging contests, two-set wins over St. Charles North and Lincoln-Way North looked relatively easy. South’s balanced attack fueled its 25-18, 25-20 win over Lincoln-Way North in the championship match.

Downers Grove South’s boys volleyball team celebrates the state title it won June 1. The Mustangs survived four straight three-set matches in the postseason to win the title. In the final, Nick Timreck led the Mustangs at the net with 11 kills and four blocks. Mike Schmitt knocked down 10 kills, and Will Tischler added seven. Jordan Pawlicki piloted the offense with 29 assists. David DeMarco collected 14 digs. Quote: “This is unbelievable. Words can’t describe what happened these past few days,” Chris Widdel said. “I was hanging out with Nick Timreck last night and we were just smiling. We couldn’t do anything else.”

School: Benet Sport: Girls volleyball Place: Second in Class 4A State run: As the two-time defending champs, the Redwings took each opponents’ best shot all season and still managed to make to the state finals for the third consecutive year. Benet won four of its first five postseason matches in two sets to make it to the state finals. A 25-22,

25-18 win over Crystal Lake South in a state semifinal had Benet playing for its third consecutive championship. In the end, the Redwings placed second after suffering a 25-22, 25-19 defeat to a Mother McAuley team whose only two losses on the season came to out-of-state teams. Number to know: 4 – state trophies Benet has won in the past six seasons with two titles and two runner-up finishes

Name: Odell McFarland, Downers Grove South Sport: Boys track, 200-meter dash Place: Second in Class 3A State run: McFarland was fast throughout his senior season and kept it up in the postseason. Posting times of 21.71 and 21.82 seconds, respectively, he won a sectional title and a state prelim race. In the state finals, he clocked a time of 21.89 in

chilly and wet conditions and narrowly finished second in the state. Additionally, he captured fourth place in the state in the 100 dash with a time of 10.91 seconds for a pair of all-state finishes. Number to know: 2 – South athletes to run in the state finals as McFarland and Jalen Lewis (fifth in 300 hurdles) had all-state finishes.

Name: Austin Dzik, Benet Sport: Boys track, 300-meter hurdles Place: Third in Class 2A State run: Dzik narrowly made the finals in the 300 hurdles, but as he later proved, all that matters is getting there. In the state final heat, the senior placed third with a time of 39.12, his best time of the postseason. Dzik was the only top-3 finisher at state for the Redwings, but teammates Anton Vershay (fifth in 3,200 run), Stephen Hubona (seventh in discus), the 4x800 relay

(eighth) and Bobby Svoboda (eighth in 800 run) all earned all-state finishes as Benet placed 13th as a team. Number to know: 36.8 – Percentage of Benet’s 19 points Dzik accounted for as he earned seven points with his finish.

Name: Aimee Dragas, Downers Grove South Sport: Girls swimming, 100-yard freestyle Place: Tied for second State run: After swimming a 1:43.10 to win the sectional title for athletes with disabilities, Dragas did even better at the state meet. She was seeded fourth heading to state, but with a time of 1:42.90 she ended up finishing in a tie for second place. Dragas also made state in the 50 freestyle and finished tied for third with a time of 47.01 seconds. Number to know: 3.26 – Seconds ahead of the third place 100 freestyle finisher at state.

four of their final six regular season games, including a 7-5 loss to Peotone on the eve of the playoffs. No matter. Lisle won comfortably in the regional and sectional rounds of the playoffs by outscoring the opposition 28-6 in four games. A narrow 5-4 win over Beecher sent the Lions to state for the first time. Kevin Coppin and Alex Ventrella had RBIs in a 2-1 win in the state semifinal as Ryan Van Volkenburg earned the pitching win, and Ventrella pitched five innings of one-run ball as the Lions won 10-1 over Pleasant Plains in the state championship game. Quote: “This is the perfect way to end my senior year,” Alex Ventrella said. “I couldn’t think of a better way. It’s amazing.”

MORE BEARS COVERAGE AT HUBARKUSH.COM

Bears face daunting task for 2014 season Hub Arkush

Marc Trestman scored well in many areas in his first season as Bears head coach, specifically in overseeing the dramatic improvement of one of the league’s weakest offenses and a significant thawing of the icy relationship Lovie Smith had with the Bears’ faithful. An objective look at the Bears’ 2013 season, however, shows the team also took some steps backward. Smith was fired for going 10-6 in his ninth year as the head coach but failing to make the playoffs. Is it reasonable to laud Trestman for going 8 -8 and also failing to make the playoffs after getting blown out in Week 16 by the Eagles and then losing at home on the last day of the season to the Packers when one win would have

clinched the division title? While Trestman should be applauded for the almost surreal growth of Josh McCown, upgrades to Jay Cutler and significant gains on offense, as the boss, he also has to shoulder the weight for the descent of one of the league’s better defenses under Smith to one of the worst in the NFL. Where does general manager Phil Emery fit in all of this? Irrespective of what Brian Urlacher may have had left, the decision to not bring him back doesn’t look good. Would it be different if D.J. Williams and Lance Briggs had stayed healthy? Perhaps, but the fact is the last really good game the Bears’ defense had was against Seattle in 2012 – until the final minutes when Urlacher’s season ended with a hamstring injury. Urlacher is irrelevant, though, because his tank was near empty, and the real problem is where does the defense go from here? Opening day starters Corey Wootton, Henry Melton, Williams, James

Masterbrand Cabinetry

Anderson, Tim Jennings, Major Wright and Charles Tillman are free agents, as is recent addition Jeremiah Ratliff. Youngsters Chris Conte, Shea McClellin, Jonathan Bostic and Khaseem Greene have been disappointing, and that’s probably too kind to Conte and McClellin. Julius Peppers had his worst year as a pro and appears to have lost something, and counting on Briggs to stay healthy in his mid-30s is a crapshoot. There isn’t a single player to rebuild the “D” around. Remember that as impressive as the offensive turnaround and the rebuilding of the offensive line were, Cutler, McCown, Matt Forte and Brandon Marshall were in place for Trestman to build around. It’s also impossible to ignore that while Trestman’s earned our trust as a man who knows offense, Cutler, McCown, Matt Slauson and Roberto Garza are free agents, and Emery has a tough call to make on Cutler. Lost in the tremendous upward

and downward mobility of the offense and defense has been the fact that Joe DeCamillis’ special teams suffered a precipitous drop from where they were under Dave Toub, and Devin Hester also is a free agent after eight years with the Bears. Here is one more disturbing truth about these 2013 Bears: The winning percentage of their 16 opponents was .465, giving them the softest schedule of the six teams that finished 8-8. The only good news is that earns them the 14th pick in the first round of the 2014 draft when they could have picked as low as 19th, where the Dolphins (8-8) stand. A bit more alarming is the fact that of the 13 teams with worse records than them, only the Lions played an easier schedule. Once the balance sheet is laid bare in front of us, it is hard to call this season a success or these Bears anything more than somewhat below average. The trip into this offseason is as paved with uncertainty as any we’ve seen in a number of years.

In the end, Cutler is Cutler ANALYSIS

sports@nwherald.com

He is who he is. In the first half, his offense showed the bad as it stalled on four three-and-outs, although it also showed the good. On his second drive, an eight-play, 80-yard series, Cutler stormed downfield, completing three passes. He topped it off with a 4-yard throw to running back Matt Forte through the cold, misty air, giving his team a 7-0 lead and its only points of the first half. Cutler couldn’t control much of what happened after that, though. He couldn’t control Alshon Jeffery fumbling a precise pass in the second quarter, setting up a Green Bay field goal. “We didn’t make enough plays to win,” he said. “That’s what it boiled down to.” After a question about his hoarse throat – he had a cold – there was silence. No more questions. “All right,” said Cutler. “See you guys.” He hustled from the podium and left the room.
