BATAVIA – “The girls” walked slowly into the small arena – some of the horses content with a casual stroll. Others rolled around on their backs and otherwise enjoyed an opportunity to stretch their legs. After they exited, a group of “boys” hustled into the arena. A little more aggressive, the horses still were calm, content to get some exercise and hang out with some friends. It’s the scene on a typical Saturday morning at Field of Dreams, a horse rescue and adoption facility that sits just south of the Dick Young Forest Preserve near Batavia. Teams of volunteers work at exercising the horses, cleaning the stalls, preparing their food and washing them. And the horses, the ones that have been rescued and are awaiting adoption, are going about their business as they wait for their special day. Of the 11 horses housed there now, six horses are meant to be there temporarily, searching for their true home, their “field of dreams.” Five are boarded there, and some actually have been adopted by someone associated with the organization. The nonprofit organization, based in St. Charles but with the facilities near Batavia, seeks to spread its message on at least three levels. It wants horse owners who are experiencing difficulty caring for their horses to know they have an option. It wants those who are seeking to purchase a horse to consider one housed at Field of Dreams. And additional volunteers always are welcome. Those interested on any of the levels can visit www.fodonline.org. Craig Knight, president of the organization, said the horses come to the location through a process, and that officials field calls every week from those looking to bring horses there. He said part of the goal is education because some people interested in owning a horse aren’t necessarily familiar with the cost. He said the cost of caring for a horse at Field of Dreams is $530 a month a horse, and that cost could be higher for some horse owners.

“We want people to know that, yes, a horse is more expensive than a goldfish or a cat,” said Knight, who added that for someone considering becoming a horse owner, a stint as a volunteer can help one gain valuable experience and information about what it takes. Calls come from the area, but also from throughout the country. He pointed out a few who were there, including TJ, a former thoroughbred. Knight said TJ, a 7-year-old with a chestnut color, raced at Arlington Park and got injured, then found his way to Field of Dreams. “He might be the next horse to be adopted out,” Knight said. There is Kallie, a rescued horse from Michigan who stands out with blue eyes and
is ready to be adopted. A mare, Wildfire, was rescued from near Wisconsin and is expected to be ready for adoption soon. There is a process. Potential adopters are met with, and there is an interview process to make certain they understand all that is involved. And horses, when they first come in, need time for recovery. Knight said that when horses arrive, they often have lost a lot of weight because they are underfed. He pointed out one 1,200-pound horse, Willie, who recently had been adopted by volunteers. Willie came in 500 pounds underweight. Another horse, Jessie, is more than 30 years old and is one of the organization’s “ambassadors,” along with a 48-year-old donkey. Knight said Jessie had been owned by someone who had difficulty feeding her, and had resorted to feeding Jessie table scraps. The owner knew this wasn’t a good situation, and she called to have Jessie sent to Field of Dreams. Knight said that was
the right call, as volunteers and those with the organization were able to provide Jessie the help she needed. Knight said the organization has more than 130 volunteer workers, who operate in two shifts each day. Each shift has a supervisor. On Saturday, the shift supervisor was Sandy Ahern, who became involved in the organization five years ago, after reading about Field of Dreams in a newspaper article. She said her children were getting older and “leaving the nest,” and she was looking for a meaningful way to fill that time. She said she learned how to ride horses when she was young, but she never had owned a horse. Now, she owns a horse that resides at Field of Dreams. Ahern, a South Elgin resident, said she works two night shifts and one day shift each week. She said some volunteers do more, and some might work one or two shifts each month. She said volunteers don’t need any previous knowledge of horses when
they begin, as they can learn what they need to know. She said “it’s amazing” to see people come in without any experience and then become leaders in the barn. One such volunteer, Montgomery resident Jill Davis, was at the barn Jan. 11. Davis works as a mentor, and a girl she was working with wanted to volunteer at Field of Dreams. Davis said she was intimidated. “I never even had touched a horse,” she said. She kept coming because she had to, but she learned the tasks and started warming to the place. She enjoyed it so much that she started coming even when the girl had moved away. “Now, I feel like how could I have gone all my life and not have done this,” she said. Davis said she would recommend it to anyone, adding that though it can be physically demanding, it also is highly rewarding. “There is never a bad day here,” she said. “There are hard days, but no bad days.”

GETTING INTO ALIGNMENT
The Republican • Thursday, January 16, 2014 • KAN
The visual defect known as “strabismus” is characterized by eyes that are misaligned and point in different directions. One eye may look straight ahead while the other turns inward, outward, upward, or downward. Strabismus may cause reduced vision or amblyopia (“lazy eye”) in the weaker eye. The brain will recognize the image of the eye that sees better while ignoring the image of the weaker, or amblyopic, eye. This occurs in approximately half the children who have strabismus. Amblyopia is often treated by patching the “good” eye to strengthen and improve vision in the weaker eye. Children who get treated before age five will usually recover almost completely normal vision, although they may continue to have problems with depth perception. P.S. All children should have a complete eye examination at least once between ages three and five.

Fermilab experiment close to launch By CHARLES MENCHACA editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Fermilab is one step closer to starting a large experiment after moving a 13-ton block underground Jan. 10. The block actually is a piece of the NOvA near detector, located 350 feet under the Fermilab campus in Batavia. A crew the morning of Jan. 10 used a crane to lower the massive block down a large shaft. The near detector at Fermilab will be used with another detector in northern Minnesota to conduct The NOvA Neutrino Experiment. Neutrinos are among the most abundant particles in the universe, according to Fermilab. The experiment will help scientists determine the role that neutrinos played in the evolution of the universe. “The neutrino is a quiet light ... hard to detect,” said Xuebing Bu, level 3 project manager for the experiment. Bu on Jan. 10 stood with his fellow NOvA collaborators next to the other seven large blocks of the near detector. All researchers get to the detector on a two-minute industrial elevator ride below ground level. Bu explained that he and his fellow researchers have to use a particle accelerator like the one at Fermilab to produce intense beams with many neutrinos. By building up the volume of neutrinos, it will be easier for the big detectors at Fermilab and Minnesota to spot the infinitely small particles. Researchers said they will send the neutrino beams underground straight through the earth and close to the speed of light to the NOvA far detector in Ash River, Minn. The block moved Jan. 10 was the eighth and final block needed for the Fermilab detector. The process to get it down

to the underground facility took about 25 minutes, including attaching the crane and lowering the block onto a platform at the bottom of the shaft. Once the block from Jan. 10’s move is added at Fermilab, the researchers will begin to fill the entire detector with a liquid through which the particles will interact. Filling liquid and also adding electronic
equipment to the detector likely will last through this spring, said Karen Kephart, assistant division head for Fermilab’s Particle Physics division. The entire far detector in Minnesota will be complete and ready to operate this summer. It is more than three times as high and wide as the detector at Fermilab. “They make you feel real small when you are standing at the bottom of them,” Kephart said of the detectors.

GHS students to perform at All-State Festival in Peoria
By SARAH VETTER planitkanenews@shawmedia.com Four Geneva High School students recently earned the right to toot their own horns. They’ve just been selected to represent their school at the prestigious Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Festival, the group’s highest honor for high school musicians. The students will travel to Peoria for the festival, which will take place Wednesday, Jan. 22, through Saturday, Jan. 25. At the event, they will join other gifted young musicians from across the state to perform together in concert. Brandon Evert and Kevin Farley, both seniors and trumpet players, will play in the band group; junior Sophia Spiegel, cellist, will perform in the orchestra division; and senior Alex Howe will sing in the choir as a tenor. “I was in normal All-State last year, but when I made honors All-State this year I wasn’t expecting it, and I was shocked beyond belief,” said Howe, who started out in his sixth-grade middle school choir and has been progressing ever since. Spiegel was smaller than her instrument when she started playing at age 5. “I honestly chose the cello because I got to sit down to play it,” she laughed. All those years of commitment and hours of practice have really paid off – “Making AllState is a wonderful surprise and quite an honor,” Spiegel said. MYSTERY DINER Restaurant reviews
JuRin Japanese brings quality at affordable prices GENEVA – Affordable is not an adjective normally associated with good sushi. At least, so I thought. That is, until I discovered JuRin Japanese Restaurant in Geneva. JuRin means forest in Japanese, but it’s nestled in a strip mall behind Jersey Mike’s Subs just north of Fabyan Parkway. Recognized as one of the best restaurants for sushi in the 2013 Kane County Chronicle Readers’ Choice Awards, JuRin combines friendly, attentive service with great value and a casual, family-friendly atmosphere. For $34.40, my dining companion and I ordered four sushi rolls, which came with two complementary orders of miso soup and salad. JuRin also has a Maki Combination lunch special for $8, which includes the diner’s selection of three rolls – including the California, Boston, Alaskan, Philadelphia, Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon, Shrimp Tempura, Salmon Skin and Negihamachi – as well as soup and salad. Around 12:30 p.m. on a Friday, the restaurant buzzed with activity. Though the restaurant interior is plain and slightly outdated, it was filled with families, smiling faces and happy people all around. The sushi chef kindly greeted each person who walked through the door and bid farewell to every satisfied diner. Nicely-dressed, whirling waiters tended to tables of families and businessmen/ women on their lunch breaks. The chef stationed at the restaurant’s teppan-yaki grill twirled, tossed and stirred a heap of rice splayed like a hand across the grill top. Seated next to my dining companion and me was a JuRin regular, who mentioned to the sushi chef that she was celebrating her birthday. After dropping off our soup, salad and waters, our waiter handed us a slender strip of paper and menu held together with a pen. After checking the boxes next to the Crunchy

JuRin Japanese Restaurant in Geneva serves traditional and specialty sushi rolls, including Red Dragon rolls (front) and Rainbow rolls.
If you go Where: 17720 S. Randall Road, Suite 190, Geneva Phone: 630-262-9590 When: Lunch hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday; dinner hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday Note: If visiting during dinner, try to make a reservation.
California roll (eight pieces for $6), the Rainbow roll (eight pieces for $11), the Red Dragon roll (four pieces for $7) and the Godzilla roll (four pieces for $8), we handed the sheet of paper over the bar to the chef who got rolling right away. Sitting at the sushi bar, various filets of fresh fish were
delicately situated in a clear compartment so that we could see exactly what goes into each roll. The salad’s chilled crunchy leaves with a layering of sweet ginger sauce served as a nice contrast to the hot cup of Miso soup. We were only a few minutes into the soup and salad course before – one-byone – our sushi orders started pouring in. Word to the wise, JuRin uses imitation crab in some of its rolls, which is probably what keeps prices more economical, but there are plenty of options without it. The only roll we ordered with the imitation crab was the Godzilla – a deep-fried roll with cream cheese and imitation crab filling, green onions and a drizzle of two sauces – and it turned out to be my dining companion’s favorite.
The chef also added an extra four pieces to what usually is a four-piece order (at no additional charge), so my dining companion was thrilled. My favorite, the Red Dragon roll, was a four-piece roll made with spicy tuna and topped with fresh tuna and avocado, tempura crumbs and green onions with drizzled orange glaze. On my next visit, I plan on trying its two counterparts – the White Dragon roll (with spicy white tuna) and Orange Dragon roll (with spicy salmon). Neither the Crunchy California – a California roll with deep-fried tempura crumbs – or Rainbow roll – a California roll with tuna, white tuna, salmon, yellow tail, shrimp and avocado on top – came with a drizzling of sauce. The rainbow roll was fresh and delicious, but I’d probably skip
the Crunchy California roll next time. With leftovers in tow, the sushi chef gave us a parting gift before we left, a calendar featuring Japan-scapes that I had admired earlier in the dining experience. Further proof that JuRin takes care of its diners. Kindness, generosity and fair-priced good food go a long way. I’m happy to say, that I have joined the ranks of JuRin regulars.

Water Street Studios to celebrate new opening PLANIT KANE planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Batavia-based Water Street Studios will be celebrating the opening of its newest facility, PrintLab, at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at 117 W. Main St. in St. Charles. Festivities will begin with a ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m. with St. Charles Alderman Rita Payleitner, followed by an open house where the public can talk with some of the instructors and member artists of PrintLab. PrintLab is a member-based, shared studio space for artists working in a variety of fine-art print media. “Thanks to grants from the Kane County Riverboat program, as well as the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, we have been
able to purchase a wide range of professional equipment,” Water Street Studios’ director of development Jim Kirkhoff said in a news release. “The equipment and space is then made available to artists to work in ... various media.” Mediums include screenprinting, lithography, monotypes and wood-cut relief. In addition to the member-based print program, PrintLab also will host art classes for students between the ages of 5 and 11. In the release, Kirkhoff said beginning Friday, Jan. 17, there will be weekly screenprinting workshops for those ages 13 and older. “Screen printing is a really interesting medium, and it is exciting to see how students translate their designs to posters or pieces of clothing,” Kirkhoff said in the release.
At the 56th annual Grammy Awards, a former Fox Valley resident will be honored alongside The Beatles and Kris Kristofferson as a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. The late Maud Powell, one of the world’s greatest violinists and a former resident of Aurora, will receive a Grammy posthumously Saturday, Jan. 25. A formal acknowledgement will be made during the Grammy Awards telecast on the CBS TV Network the night of Sunday, Jan. 26. In addition to The Beatles, Kristofferson and Powell, other honorees of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award include Mexican-born singer, songwriter and pianist Armando Manzanero;
the late Blues Hall of Fame inductee Clifton Chenier; pop music group The Isley Brothers and electronic band Kraftwerk. “It is a great privilege to recognize such an exceptional group of honorees and celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to the recording industry,” The Recording Academy president/CEO Neil Portnow said in a news release. “This astoundingly unique and gifted group have created some of the most distinguished and influential work in our musical history. “Their legacies are timeless and legendary, and their creativity will continue to influence and inspire future generations,” he said. Born in Peru, Ill., in 1867, Powell moved to Aurora at age 3. Starting from a young age, she received the best musical education in the U.S. and Europe, where she became the first American-born con-
cert violinist to achieve international stature, according to the release. At age 16, she debuted with the New York Philharmonic Society. By the 20th century, it was evident she had become the best violin player of her generation, the release stated. The Victor Talking Machine Co., which was experimenting with recording the human voice, chose Powell as its first instrumental recording artist in 1904, later making her the first violinist to create best-selling records, the release stated. The world-renowned violinist died in 1920 in Uniontown, Penn. Powell’s legacy continues locally in the form of the Maud Powell String Quartet, which is made up of members of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra – a scholarship ensemble for high school and college-age advanced string players in Elgin.

Coming off a win at the Lincoln-Way East Invitational on Jan. 11 with a year-best mark of 146.15, the Vikings team bested that mark by outdueling the St. Charles co-op, 146.2142.5. Leading the charge for the Vikings were seniors Dominique Brognia and Claire Scatterday, along with freshman standout Claire Ginsberg. Brognia capped the win for the Vikings with a 9.45 in floor, while Ginsberg placed second with a 9.35. The senior-freshman duo placed in all four events to help Geneva post its best score of the season, something not lost on coach Kim Hostman. “I’m really happy. I wanted us to hit a 146 tonight regardless of the outcome, and we just try to focus on us,” Hostman said. “We just have to keep progressing on and improving our score. The girls really try to focus on our goals each week and so far our accomplishments have been amazing.” St. Charles had a strong start to the event as Rachel Dugan placed first in the bars with a 9.55. Besides a strong showing in the vault that saw Dugan tie Ginsberg for first and Cathryn Gotlund take second, St. Charles was nearly shut out off the top spots with just a Sidney Copeland third place in the floor, along with Dugan’s first in the bars. “We have a lot of girls who are just getting back from injuries and are getting back in the lineup so we’re feeling pretty strong,” Dugan said. “I was definitely really nervous for bars; that was the one event coming in that I was most nervous for. Getting that out of the way first, but most important-

Geneva’s Claire Scatterday competes on the balance beam Jan. 13 during the Vikings’ victory against the St. Charles co-op team in Geneva. ly hitting it, that was big for me.” The turning point in the meet came in the second rotation as Geneva placed Ginsberg (9.7), Brognia (9.45) and Scatterday (9.25) atop the scoring. Meanwhile, only Copeland (9.2) was able to break the 9.0 mark as three St. Charles competitors fell off the beam during their routines. That left St. Charles coach Amy Lill wanting more. “I’m a little pleased with tonight, but we have a lot to work on,” Lill said. “I’m very pleased with all of my girls tonight. Next week we don’t have any meets which will be really nice so we can work on some things and get ready to
go into conference.” Brognia didn’t let the emotion of senior night get to her, placing second in the allaround (37.1) just behind Ginsberg (37.85). Brognia placed in all four events, including third in the vault (9.1), third in the bars (9.1), second on the beam (9.45) and rounding out the night with a win in the floor (9.45). “I was emotional at the beginning. I put it behind me and tried to focus on the meet because we really needed these points for conference,” Brognia said. “I just had to focus on what I was doing but also the team. I think floor is my best event and it’s all about the landings and stay-
ing under control.” Ginsberg also placed in all four events for Geneva, tying for first in the vault (9.4), placing second in the bars (9.4) and second on the floor (9.45) while setting a school record in the beam with a 9.7. “I think a 9.5 was my high earlier in the season. I was surprised but the judge told me she was really impressed,” Ginsberg said. “It’s exciting especially as a freshman to see where we can go. Getting high scores and breaking school records is just boosting our confidence.” Dugan took third overall in the all-around with a 36.35 Sidney Copeland of St. Charles Cowhile Copeland was fourth op completes her floor exercise with a 35.9. routine during their dual meet.

As he said in his Nobel acceptance speech: “But in spite of temporary victories, violence never brings permanent peace. It solves no social problem; it merely creates new and more complicated ones. Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding; it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love.”King continually preached a message of peace and love over hatred and violence.

r. Martin Luther King Jr. was a preacher, a father, a scholar and one of the strongest voices of peace and freedom in American history. King was the youngest man to win the Nobel Peace Prize, at the age of 35. He was an activist and leader in the civil rights movement who pushed for equal rights and acceptance for all people, no matter their race or background. King is known for his leadership and effectiveness using nonviolent measures, meaning that instead of going to war with his enemies, or using violence to further his cause, he sought to change the world through peace.
