BATAVIA – In recent weeks, Batavia resident Jamie Palmer has been treated to a majestic sight – bald eagles roosting in two trees in her backyard. Since 1992, Palmer has lived on Woodland Avenue near the Fox River. For whatever reason, Palmer said she has been seeing more eagles than usual this winter. “You can see them swooping down into the Fox River to capture a fish,” Palmer said. “It’s incredible to see them up close. The two trees are 100 feet from my back window.” She uses binoculars to catch their yellow beaks and white feathers in exquisite detail. The bald eagle, the national bird of the United States, is the only eagle unique to North America. Palmer said she typically sees one to four eagles a day perched in her trees. According to the website www.eaglenature.com, bald eagles generally choose to roost in large trees in protected places within eight miles of their feeding grounds. Bald eagles also have been spotted recently in other parts of the county. The Kane County Audubon Society on its website, www.kanecountyaudu-

Sandy Bressner - sbressner@shawmedia.com

Bald eagles are seen along the Fox River in Batavia. bon.org, reported that four eagles were seen Sunday, flying over the Fox River in downtown St. Charles near the Main

Street Bridge, and four eagles were spotted on Dec. 15 flying over the Fox River in Geneva near Island Park.

Living near the Fox River, Palmer has a bird’s-eye view of nature. “In the summer, I see snap-

ping turtles walking up my yard to lay eggs,” she said. “There is so much that is going on all the time.”

Former alderman Hanson named Batavia Citizen of the Year By NICOLE WESKERNA

nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Former Batavia alderman Jim Hanson, 88, will be honored by the Batavia Chamber of Commerce as the city’s Citizen of the Year. R o g e r Breisch, executive director of the Batavia JIM HANSON Chamber of Commerce, said Hanson’s “lifetime of commitment” is what makes him stand out. “It’s humbling to see all things he’s done,” Breisch said. “And to meet him – he’s the kindest, most humble, most generous person.” Hanson was honored Jan.

31 at the chamber’s annual awards event “Inspire 2014: A Celebration of Those Who Inspire Us!” That event was held at the Commons Auditorium at The Holmstad, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia. For information, register at www. bataviachamber.org or call 630-879-7134. Hanson was elected as an alderman in 1961 and served as the chair of what then was known as the planning, zoning and annexation committee, the release stated. During his 16 years in his tenure, downtown Batavia Plaza came into being and land was acquired north of Wilson Street for additional development. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Hanson was one of the driving forces of the original

move to renovate and revitalize downtown Batavia. He said it was during Hanson’s tenure on the City Council that a lot of old factory buildings were torn down, and he helped redevelop the area where Panera Bread and Walgreen’s are now located on Wilson Street. “He was also very instrumental with the arrival of Fermilab in the area in the 1968 and 1967 time frame,” Schielke said. “He’s a great choice. Talk about somebody who’s a giving citizen.” While on the City Council, Hanson also worked on an open housing ordinance that fought discrimination and segregation to ensure fair housing, according to a news release from the chamber. He was instrumental in helping

provide the Muslim community with a meeting place 30 years ago. The Muslim community continues to meet at Calvary Church today, states the release. “He wanted to make sure fair housing had some teeth to it, and his willingness to welcome the Muslim community to the Calvary” are examples of that, Breisch said. The Batavia Citizen of the Year is selected by a committee of previous recipients of the award and is based on nominations from the community. The award is given for extraordinary contributions to the community over the course of the recipient’s lifetime. Breisch said when previous Citizen of the Year Award re-

cipients heard Hanson’s name on the nominee list, they all seemed to know who Hanson was, despite Hanson’s public sector work being long behind him. “Most of his recent activity is very quiet and behind-thescenes,” Breisch said. “When I got this group together, they all knew Jim Hanson.” In addition to his work on the Batavia City Council, Hanson continues to volunteer each month at the Batavia Depot Museum, according to the news release. He was involved with RSVP and resigned from the board last spring. Hanson worked as a teacher in the West Aurora School District and also served three terms as the Kane County regional school superintendent.

Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez looks at the clarity of a water sample Dec. 19 during the Kane County Water Association’s annual Water Taste Test Contest for the Best Tasting Water in Kane County at the Lincoln Inn in Batavia. Aurora earns best water title By ERIC SCHELKOPF

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Once again, Aurora has taken the crown when it comes to its drinking water. A panel of three judges decided that Aurora had the best drinking water based on taste, odor and clarity during the Kane County Water Association’s annual water-tasting contest Dec. 19 at Lincoln Inn Banquets in Batavia. This is the fifth time Aurora has won the contest, the most of any community in Kane County. Montgomery won last year. The award has been presented since 1997. Those in charge of the city’s water production did not take the honor lightly. Aurora’s drinking water is a blend of well water and Fox River water. “We have a well-run plan and an excellent staff,” said Bob Leible, assistant superintendent of water production for Aurora. “You certainly don’t

want your customers to be disappointed with the water that comes out of the tap.” The last time Aurora received the award was in 2008. Aurora now will compete in the state competition next year. “It is a little bit of bragging rights between the communities,” Leible said. Aurora, along with Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, North Aurora, Sugar Grove, Montgomery, Yorkville and Elgin, participated in this year’s contest. On the panel of judges was Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez. The samples from each community were submitted in unmarked beakers so judges did not know whose water they were drinking. Perez said he found the task difficult as he sniffed and carefully eyed the beakers of water. “It was difficult to choose,” he said. “The majority of them were very good. Some were so close I had to give them the same score.”

8NEWS BRIEF 200 cartons of cigarettes taken during burglary

BATAVIA – Offenders took a laptop computer and about 200 cartons of cigarettes during a burglary Saturday at Batavia Pantry, 929 E. Wilson St. The offenders entered the store at 2:24 a.m., according to police reports. The business will provide police with a complete

list of missing items. “They have been cooperating with us,” Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said. He said police continue to investigate the case. He didn’t say whether police have any leads in the case. “I know our guys are working on it now,” he said. – Shaw Media

BATAVIA – Batavia-based Aldi has announced that it plans to open 650 new stores across the United States by 2018, according to a news release. “We’re ramping up our expansion plans to meet growing demand for Aldi from customers across the country,” Aldi president Jason Hart said in the release. “Recently, we successfully entered new markets such as Houston and expanded our presence in competitive markets like South Florida and New York City. “At Aldi, we believe that great quality can be affordable, and we are eager to

bring the Aldi difference to new markets like Southern California.” Aldi officials did not say how many more stores they plan to open in the Chicago area. The grocery chain currently has about 1,300 stores in 32 U.S. states and employs more than 18,000 people, making it the 25th-largest grocer in the nation, according to “Supermarket News” weekly trade magazine. Aldi opened its first American store in Batavia in 1976. Aldi’s 56-acre campus at 1200 N. Kirk Road in Batavia serves as the U.S. headquarters for Aldi Corp. Aldi, short for Albrecht Discount, is based in Germany.

FACTS ABOUT SUNGLASSES

Sunglasses shield the eyes from ultraviolet (UV) rays, which have been linked to cataracts and cancer. They also filter out the blue light that is particularly damaging to internal eye tissues and may permanently damage the retina over time. Everyone who spends time outdoors should wear sunglasses, including children, whose eyes are especially vulnerable to UV rays. People who wear contact lenses should wear sunglasses because contacts don’t protect eyelids and even UV-treated contacts don’t cover the entire eye. Sunglasses are necessary for patients taking medications (such as tetracycline) that make their eyes sensitive to the sun. In addition, those who have had cataract surgery still need sunglasses, especially if they have older intraocular lenses that provide no UV protection. P.S. Light-colored eyes are particularly vulnerable to UV rays, which pose a threat even on hazy and overcast days.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ST. CHARLES – In February, the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles will celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” On Sunday, Feb. 9, the Arcada Theatre will recreate that night with Beatles tribute band The Liverpool Legends. But it will be with a twist – the show will include a visit from George Harrison’s sister, Louise, who was present that night nursing her brother’s 103-degree fever backstage. Louise Harrison is a personal friend of Ron Onesti, president and CEO of the Arcada Theatre. “As much as I love all our shows, this will be one of the most important events we have had,” Onesti said in a news release. “To not only have one of the top Beatles tribute shows in the country

on the actual anniversary is one thing, but to also have a real Beatles family member present who can talk about what it was like that night ... who else has that?” The TV show will be broadcast at 7 p.m. on to the Arcada’s 40-foot screen, immediately after the live tribute performance. Onesti said he selected the Liverpool Legends group for its musical authenticity, showmanship and dedication to The Beatles’ legacy. “This is going to be the biggest year ever for The Beatles with the 50th anniversary of ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ upon us, and we are going to replicate that night from start to finish with every detail,” said Kevin Mantegna in the press release. He performs as John Lennon in Liverpool Legends. “We will even have ‘Ed Sullivan’ there.” he said. More information is available at www.oshows.com.

The local housing market in the Tri-Cities and Kane County saw some year-overyear improvements in November that included increases in home sale prices. According to data from the Illinois Association of Realtors, Kane County was one of 39 counties in Illinois that showed year-over-year median price increases, which were up 16.7 percent to $160,500. Some year-over-year improvements also hit the Tri-Cities housing market, but not in all areas. While the number of homes sold may have increased, home prices may have decreased, or vice versa. In Geneva, 22 detached single-family homes were under contract to be sold traditionally in November 2013, up from 21 sold during that time in 2012, according to data from the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. Detached single-family homes that were under contract to be sold in St. Charles increased 41.4 percent from November 2012, a trend that continued from 2011 to 2012, when home sales increased by 61.1 percent. ‘Guitar Chief’ helping supply instruments to children By NICOLE WESKERNA

nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jerry Gendron of St. Charles remembers when he picked up a guitar as a kid – he had to overcome strings that were too high on the neck for his smaller hands, as well as play through bloody blisters on his fingers. “I know that’s enough to discourage younger players who don’t have what it takes to overcome that difficulty,” he said. So, he decided to start restoring guitars to make them easier for younger musicians to play. Through his eBay website, and Facebook page, titled “Guitar Chief,” Gendron has been selling and marketing restored guitars that are more affordable for families with children who want a guitar that’s manageable for younger musicians to play. “I clean them up, buff them, polish them, put new strings on them, straighten the neck,” he said. “Every one of them is different. I put them in a condition that, for less money than a brand new one, the guitar [is] going to play better than a brand new one.” Gendron, who by day is a financial advisor in Geneva, said he uses the funds from his restored guitar and string instrument sales to purchase other instruments to restore or donate to music programs in the Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles school districts. Gendron said he’s contacted 80 band, jazz band, orchestra and choir teachers in Tri-Cities school districts in hopes of working with them in the future to coordinate instrument donations or to offer more affordable instruments to children whose families may not have the budget to buy or rent them brand new.

A Fender Squier Affinity Strat electric guitar is one guitar for sale on St. Charles resident Jerry Gendron’s eBay page where he sells restored guitars at a more affordable price so families can introduce their children to music without spending a lot of money. Gendron also uses funds from his guitar sales to donated restored string instruments to local school music programs.

On the web Guitars and other instruments restored by St. Charles resident Jerry Gendron can be purchased on his eBay page at www.ebay.com/sch/silanfu/m.html?_ ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1. Gendron makes instruments more playable for younger musicians and more affordable for families whose children might be interested in learning to play. Proceeds also go toward donating instruments to Tri-Cities school districts. The idea to restore instruments came when his daughter started playing violin. He said instead of spending hundreds of dollars to purchase a new violin, he purchased one for $50 that he was able to restore. He said in some cases, it costs a family $300 to $400 just to rent a violin each year. He plans to donate 15 restored vi-

olins to Anderson Elementary School and Lincoln Elementary School in St. Charles. “I’m set up to donate instruments where there’s a need,” he said. Gendron said in addition to restoring and donating string instruments, he acts as an adviser for families who have nev-

er purchased a musical instrument before and may need some guidance in learning what to buy. He said most families will need to spend at least a few hundred dollars for a guitar that’s playable for younger musicians without any adjustments. “There’s gotta be a lot of musicians, or potential musicians,

that could really blossom if they could overcome the instrument they’re playing on,” he said. “Unfortunately, so many of these instruments are blown out of the factory without any quality control.” Gendron said both his love of music and working as a mentor through his alma mater, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, inspired the move to restore, sell and donate used instruments. He said especially with the recession, many families might struggle to afford instruments. “Music has brought so much joy in my life,” he said. “What a shame for somebody not to have that same experience.”

Big names coming to county Cheap Trick, Kevin Costner and Eddie Money among lineup By KARA SILVA

ksilva@shawmedia.com The dawn of a new year also brings a fresh lineup of entertainment. Concerts with band Cheap Trick and actor/musician Kevin Costner are just a couple of the headlining tours coming through Kane County in 2014, but it’s an act that has yet to be revealed that could garner the most attention. “We’ve got an artist who is big enough that we’re bringing them in for seven consecutive days of shows, and we will probably sell out every single show,” said Jim Jarvis, vice president of marketing for Aurora’s Paramount Theatre. Jarvis said performances will take place in late August, and the artist’s identity will be unveiled Saturday, March 1. The Paramount Theatre also will present its next big Broadway show, “42nd Street,” which tells the story of a smalltown girl who moves to New York City to make it big on Broadway. “[The show] has a big, giant orchestra … nobody does that,” Jarvis said, adding that it also features the biggest tap number in Broadway history. “We have like 29 cast members, and each cast member has six pairs of dance shoes now. It’s huge. It’s a family show, and it has a great message.” “42nd Street” opens Wednesday, Jan. 15, and runs through Sunday, Feb. 9. Making a return to the Paramount stage is Poi Dog Pondering for one night – Friday, April 18. “Poi Dog is a Chicago institution,” Jarvis said, adding tickets sell out every time the Chicago-based group visits the venue. “We’ll seat 1,700 people, and once [Poi Dog] hits the stage, nobody sits down. It’s a really cool, fun party.” Voca People, an ensemble

Hollywood actor and rock/country crooner Kevin Costner will perform Monday, April 21, at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles. performing vocal theater that combines a cappella and beat box vocals to create the sounds of an orchestra, will perform the day after Poi Dog, on Saturday, April 19. “They are aliens from the planet Voca, and they don’t talk using words; everything is musical expression,” Jarvis said, adding that the group will reproduce songs by musicians Madonna and Queen without

the use of musical instruments. RiverEdge Park’s season will kick off in June with a craft beer festival. It will announce its concert tour lineup at the end of February. The types of acts to be expected during RiverEdge Park’s second season include country rock, pop rock and “giant, classic rock headliners,” said Jarvis, who also does marketing for RiverEdge.

Similar to last year, the Blues on the Fox festival – Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28 – will kick off the concert schedule. The focus, this year, also is being spent on widening the array of offered events to families and couples, Jarvis said. The “Grease” sing-a-long movie in the park will make a comeback this season, with a new addition to the mix – the

cult classic “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” “Last year, we had ‘Grease’ movies in the park, and, like, 1,000 people showed up … lots of people showed up in costumes,” Jarvis said. Jarvis said between RiverEdge Park and Paramount Theatre more than 300,000 people visited downtown Aurora last year, “and [2014] should be an even bigger year.” “It’s an exciting time,” he said. On the theater front, Albright Theatre in Batavia will round out its 40th anniversary 2013-14 season in June. As an ode to Albright’s history in performance art, box office manager Jeannine Collins said, “We [chose] six shows [and] of the six shows, five of them were things that had been done over our 40 [years].” The remaining shows of the season include the MA-rated drama “Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf” running Saturday, Feb. 15, through Tuesday, March 15; the comedy “The Curious Savage” running Friday, May 2, through Saturday, May 17; and “Love Rides the Rails” running Friday, June 13, through Saturday, June 28. Tickets to each show cost $15. “We always do really good shows,” Collins said. “If we have been around for 40 years – and we have – then we must be doing something right.” Albright Theater’s 2014-15 season will be announced in May. Record store and live music venue Kiss The Sky in Batavia will “have more shows this year than we have in past years,” said owner Steve Warrenfeltz, adding that the monthly concert series will include national acts, as well as local artists. Singer/songwriter Scott Tipping will perform Tuesday, Jan. 28; Train Company and Beautiful Collision will perform Sunday, Feb. 16; Chris Walke and his pedal-steel guitar will take the stage Sunday, Feb. 23; and Jim Green, known as the Wandering Endorphin, will perform in March. Heartsfield will take the stage on Record Store Day – Saturday, April 19 – an international day dedicated to

MYSTERY DINER Restaurant reviews

Prime Bistro brings a taste that’s out of the park ST. CHARLES – The Prime Bistro logo depicts a plump patty nestled between two buns with a steak knife holding it all together. Its concept is clear – burgers are the specialty. Formerly River Rockhouse, Prime Bistro is a sports bar and burger joint with a selection of flatbread pizzas, sandwiches and salads. The sprawling space is anchored by a hive of flat-screen TVs surrounded by a colossal bar. Reclaimed wooden planks scaling the interior walls give the lofty space a rich and textured contrast to the sleek bar top and soft, cushy booths. The square footage continues onto the covered back patio, which is great for dining al fresco during the warmer months. The burgers are assembled using grass-fed beef, which is apparently half the cholesterol of a normal burger and also houses some of the “good” fatty acids found in olive oil, Prime Bistro owner Matt Dakan stated in a previous story the Kane County Chronicle published when the restaurant first opened in September. The burgers are half-priced all day long Mondays, and there are plenty of crafty combinations from which to choose. The Cali burger comes with avocado, Swiss cheese, mixed greens, tomato and ranch; The Cowboy comes topped with onion rings, Applewood bacon, cheddar cheese and is smothered in barbecue sauce; and the Oooo it’s Hot! comes with Monterey Jack, pickled jalapeños, grilled onions and jalapeño cream cheese poppers, to name a few. I narrowed in on the Mushroom Swiss burger ($12), which comes stacked with a heaping pile of sautéed mushrooms atop a melty, Swiss cheese-layered burger patty. The bun is buttered and spends a little time on the grill itself, giving its edges a slight charcoaled crunch to each succulent bite. As advertised in the logo, the burger came skewered with a steak knife. Burgers also come with a

My dining companion, who was thrilled she had the option to order vegetables to accompany her burger, felt inclined to order the Blues burger ($12), a delicate layering of sautéed

Prime Bistro’s Cali Fries feature sautéed onions, green onions, Thousand Island dressing and shredded cheese. mushrooms, grilled onions, blue-cheese dressing and blue cheese crumbles. Of the many blue-cheesecentric burgers my dining companion has sampled at other establishments, she said Prime Bistro was one of the few that actually uses bluecheese crumbles – and not just

the dressing. A small attention to detail not lost on her. We ordered the Cali Fries – which pay homage to the owner’s California roots – although they are nowhere near as healthy as one would imagine a California-inspired dish to be. A thick layer of tangy Thousand Island dressing

and shredded cheese covered the salted fries, which were intertwined with grilled onions and topped with crunchy green onions. We devoured the dish in minutes, not because there weren’t enough for two ravenous diners but because of the combination of flavors that made my taste buds sing. Prime Bistro offers another French-fry infused dish – the Honey Sweet Potato, which is sprinkled with cinnamon, brown sugar and doused in honey. The bistro also serves up appetizers or bar food for sports fanatics wanting to munch while taking in a game. Options include an assortment of flavored wings, such as garlic butter, hot, ranch and barbecue; beer-battered onion rings, mozzarella sticks; and jalapeño poppers. All orders can be made in half or full sizes. In addition, Dakan – having owned a pizzeria in California – offers a bevy of flatbread pizza options, including Hawaiian, Buffalo Chicken, Meat Lover and Chili Cheese Fries pizza, to name a few. The restaurant was empty for lunch on this Friday, but it may have something to do with the turnover of the building and, possibly, its location. It’s seated on the outskirts of St. Charles’ main drag and hasn’t updated its signage just yet. But give this place a chance. Whether it’s pub grub on game day, lunch with friends or taking advantage of half-price burger Mondays, Prime Bistro’s burgers are worth sinking your teeth into. • The Mystery Diner is a newsroom employee at the Kane County Chronicle. jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – Although the Geneva boys basketball team’s lead against East Aurora was disappearing quickly, the Vikings couldn’t be too upset with themselves. Several of the baskets the Tomcats made to draw closer came with quite a degree of difficulty, especially from beyond the 3-point arc. “For the most part, I thought we played good defensively,” Geneva junior Nate Navigato said. “I mean, they pulled up from everywhere, and they were hitting, especially at the end. That’s what got them back in the game. I’m not so sure how you’re supposed to guard that.” Eventually, the Tomcats’ crowd-pleasing theatrics waned, and Geneva notched a 61-52 win Dec. 30 in the championship game of the East Aurora Holiday Tournament. East Aurora (4-9) drew within 48-47 with 4:43 to play in the fourth quarter on a Fred Reynolds layup. But the Tomcats went dry offensively for almost four minutes afterward, failing to score until a pair of Adrian Smith free throws brought the Tomcats’ deficit to 55-49 with 47 seconds to play. The Vikings made 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Tomcats at bay. “I was actually happy to see that they did make a run at us because I wanted to see how our guys were going to withstand that,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “For them to cut it to one and then all of the sudden you’ve got their whole crowd into it, and they’re focused. It got loud in here, and our guys didn’t blink.” The Vikings (12-3) went 4-0 at East Aurora and won their second holiday tournament

Geneva’s Justin Durante goes up for a shot during the Vikings’ 61-52 victory against East Aurora on Monday in the championship game of the East Aurora Holiday Tournament in Aurora. Durante finished with 13 points in the Vikings’ victory. of the season after also finishing first at West Chicago’s Thanksgiving tournament. Geneva led 29-23 at halftime. The 6-foot-7 Navigato made his first five field-goal attempts of the second quarter, mostly on lightly contested attempts around the rim. Ralston would have liked to exploit the Navigato matchup even more but was generally pleased his team kept the game’s pace manageable. “If we were going to get into a track meet with them, running up and down the floor, they would beat us probably

95 out of 100 times,” he said. “Maybe 99 out of 100. Maybe even 100 out of 100. It would not be good odds.” The Tomcats hoisted 25 3-point attempts on the night, making eight. Junior Delvion Pugh’s hot hand late played a leading role in the surge for East Aurora, which played inspired ball throughout the tournament after the recent death of assistant coach Troy Smith. Navigato, named the tournament’s MVP, led Geneva with 21 points. His 3-pointer late in the third quarter sup-

plied Geneva its largest lead at 43-31. Senior guard Justin Durante added 13 points for Geneva, which will begin the 2014 portion of its schedule Saturday, Jan. 4, at the United Center, where the Vikings take on Kaneland. The victory marked Ralston’s 100th since arriving at Geneva for the 2008-09 season. It was a festive way to ring in the occasion as the Vikings snipped the nets after winning the tournament championship, the program’s first

Christmas tournament crown since taking the Chuck Dayton tournament in DeKalb in Ralston’s first season. “Since I’ve come to Geneva, I’ve talked about cutting down nets,” Ralston said. “You want to win championships, and when you win a championship, you want to be able to cut down a net. So that was nice of East Aurora to allow us to do that. I thought that was very classy of them.” Senior guard Chris Parrilli also was a first-team all-tournament pick for Geneva.

Winter travel In order to prevent returning home to a household emergency, there are several simple tasks that should be completed before traveling during the winter. Turn off the main water supply: The main water supply controls all of the water in the house and is one of the best protections against needing to repair water damage and prevent flooding. Turning off the water supply can help prevent pipes from bursting. Winterize the drainage systems: Drain the water out of the toilet and add non toxic antifreeze. Also, pour onehalf cup of antifreeze down the bathroom sinks, as well as down the bath tub. Test the sump pump: In case there is an emergency, make sure the sump pump is working before leaving town. To test the sump pump, fill it with water and wait for the float to rise to the top. Once the float rises, the sump pump should start running. Leave the thermostat turned on: Set the thermostat to no lower than 60 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent pipes from freezing. unplug the electronics: The television, computers, stereos, lamps and any additional item should be unplugged. This action saves money and prevents damage from a power surge.

The next time you’re shopping for a new accent for your home or wardrobe, chances are your eyes will be drawn to pieces the color of a bright tropical bloom. That’s what the experts at the Pantone Color Institute are betting. Every year, Pantone surveys the globe and crowns its Color of the Year, the hue predicted to make a big splash in palettes during the months ahead. For 2014, everything is coming up Radiant Orchid, a vibrant shade somewhere between fuchsia and violet. “It doesn’t surprise me at all,” said Kathy Basil, manager/buyer for Hirshfield’s Design Resource, of Pantone’s choice. She’s noticed pink ascending in popularity, especially among trendsavvy customers. “People in the know, they’re asking for pink in wallcoverings,” she said.

work or a floral arrangement, she said. “I think it’s going to be seasonal, for outdoor areas and porches, maybe in a bathroom.” Orchid is a good complement to other currently popular colors in interior design, including the grays that have become the preferred neutral, as well as last year’s emerald, she said. “It’s gorgeous with green. Think of an orchid on a stem. It’s a beautiful combination in nature.” Does “Color of the Year” actually have an impact on which hues people will be seeing and buying? Yes, said Basil. While many manufacturers of paint and other products issue their own color proclamations, Pantone’s still carries the most weight and has the most influence. Within hours of the Color of the Year announcement, manufacturers and retailers started promoting their orchidhued offerings, from lamps to upholstery fabrics to vases. Often, we crave the Color of the Year subconsciously before we even know what it is, Basil said. For Thanksgiving, she bought an orchid for her table — more than a week before Pantone’s announcement. “It’s a positive color, full of energy,” she said. “Just like my orchid, it makes me smile.” Scripps Howard News Service

However, over time, hard water results in scale formation on the interior surfaces of those pipes and that provides a perfect home for bacteria. nearly 90 percent of American homes have hard water — water containing high levels of calcium and magnesium, according to The u.S. Not just orchid shades, but pinks of all description, from brights to pales. Nancy Woodhouse, senior designer for Gabbert’s Design Studio, noticed a lot of orchid in fashion windows while in London last spring. “It’s beautiful — such a vibrant, romantic color,” she said. Orchid is a feminine color, but you don’t have to be female to like it or wear it.For interiors, Jim Noble of Noble Interior Design expects it to be used as an accent hue to add a pop of color. “It could be great in a house in a plaid or paisley,” he said. Basil also expects orchid to take a limited supporting role in home decor. “I don’t really see it as a wall color,” she said. “It can’t be matte or flat. It has to have depth, like a fabric or a leather. It won’t take center stage like emerald,” last year’s Pantone pick for Color of the Year, she predicted. Woodhouse would use orchid on pillows, vases, a piece of art-
