IT LOOKS A LOT LIKE

Garran Sparks began decorating his Batavia home for the Christmas in earnest in 2000. His display, which keeps growing every year, includes thousands of lights, included a lighted walk and several inflatable figures that are all synchronized to music. Sparks’ holiday display has become a tradition in the neighborhood, said his next-door neighbor, Shelly McEachern. She said her family looks forward to it every year. “My three kids grew up on Garran’s lights,” McEachern said. “The whole neighborhood enjoys it.” Sparks said the work and expense he puts into his display is worth it. “I like to see kids’ reactions,” he said. “And when you open up the blinds in the house, you can see the lights from every window. It kind of brightens up winter.” Homeowners aren’t the only ones going all out for the holidays. Malone Funeral Home, at 324 E. State St. in Geneva,
is bathed in holiday lights during the holiday season. “It’s become a tradition,” said Dennis Malone of Malone Funeral Home. “We have been doing it at least 15 years. It’s kind of grown

BATAVIA – To say Batavia 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks’ house at 943 Bluestem Lane in Batavia is decked out for the holidays is an understatement. Sparks’ display is so big that it takes up both his front and back yards. Sparks welcomes people to walk a lighted path that extends from the street to the rear yard of his house. It is one of the shining stars among holiday displays, which can be seen throughout the area. While some opt for more modest decorations, some go all out. Sparks’ display started out on a much smaller scale. “I started just putting lights in front of the house,” Sparks said. The display continues to get bigger and bigger every year – and taller, in the case of the 45-foot-tall blue spruce tree that is in his backyard this year. With the help of a cherry picker, Sparks was able to get all the lights wrapped around the tree. Walking along the path, one will encounter a variety of decorations, including Santa and his sleigh and even a peacock. For the fourth year, Sparks is collecting food donations for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. Those who come out to the display can drop off donations in a box at the beginning of the path. Last year, Sparks collected between 12 to 13 shopping
carts of food for the pantry. According to its website, the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry is in need of such food items as cereal, beef stew, beef chili and baby food, and other items such as dish soap, laundry detergent, shampoo and conditioner, paper towels and bar soap. This year’s display almost didn’t happen because of the harsh weather conditions the area has experienced lately. “Two weeks before Thanksgiving, I had three inches of water in my backyard and one week before Thanksgiving, the ground was frozen and I couldn’t get the stakes in,” Sparks said. But with the help of his daughter, son-in-law and their kids, Sparks was able to finish this year’s display. He said laying out the path is probably the hardest part. “I have to put stakes in every foot and a half,” he said. Sparks doesn’t even know how many lights are included in the display. As part of the display, the two-story shed in his backyard is decorated with lights that are synchronized to music. Like others, Sparks has made the transition to LED lights, which have become more popular in the last few years. He said the display doubles his electric bill for the month. “It’s equivalent to running the air over the summer during the hottest month,” Sparks said. “It’s typically about $400, about $200 more than I would usually pay in the winter.”

Youth orchestra now accepting registration CORNEAL STAINING While the corneal surface regenerates like skin, sometimes too many cells are shed, providing an opportunity for bacteria and other microorganisms to enter the eye. Anything that causes friction on the surface of the eye, from blinking to wearing contact lenses, can cause mild abrasions on the corneal surface called “corneal staining,” which is what is visible when fluorescein dye and a black light are used to examine the cornea. While corneal staining happens to everyone from time to time, those who wear soft contacts may be particularly susceptible if they do not regularly clean and replace their lenses. Perhaps the most common is 3/9 staining (corneal staining in the peripheral cornea at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions). P.S. Artificial tears are often used to clear up corneal staining caused by dry eye syndrome.

BATAVIA – Four Batavia firefighters suffered minor injuries fighting a house fire the morning of Dec. 10 at 308 S. Harrison St. Three of the firefighters were treated at the scene, and one was treated at a local hospital and released. The firefighters were hurt after a fall inside the house, Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said. “One was on a ladder, and the other three were working
on the stairs below,” Banker said. All of the occupants in the house were able to get out safely. However, the owner was treated at the scene for a minor injury after ceiling material fell on him as he was escaping from the house, Banker said. The fire caused an estimated $175,000 in damage and left the house uninhabitable. “It is a total loss,” Banker said. Six people were in the house at the time of the fire, he said. Grace McWayne Elementary School students in Batavia collected toys Friday for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program that benefits families in need.
Elementary school collects toys for children By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Grace McWayne Elementary School fifth-grader Vivien Cohen hopes the dolls and books she packed Friday will make Christmas brighter for a needy child. Vivien and other student council members presented more than 800 toys Dec. 13 to organizers of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program that benefits families in need. “I hope their Christmas will be more merry,” she said. Grace McWayne fourthgrade student Madison Foy brought Connect Four, a game that she has enjoyed with her own family. “I thought other kids would enjoy it,” Madison said. Patrick Kackert, Toys for Tots coordinator for Kane County, said the donation was greatly appreciated. Grace McWayne students have worked over the past few months fundraising and
collecting new, unwrapped toys to help support the Toys for Tots program. “Our donations are down this year,” Kackert said. “This will really give it a boost.” The donation represented the largest made by one organization to Toys for Toys this holiday season, Kackert said. “They have definitely gone above and beyond,” he said. The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, which began in 1947, is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December and distribute the gifts to children in need. This is the fifth year the school has collected toys for the program. Grace McWayne fourthgrade student Della Williams and her sister brought in two baby dolls as part of the toy drive. “I think they will like them and be surprised,” she said. Information about Toys for Tots is available at www. batavia-il.toysfortots.org.

BATAVIA – Batavia police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who was trespassing at the Batavia Government Center early Dec. 7 after breaking a glass door to gain entry. Batavia Crime-Stoppers posted a video of the man on its Facebook page. At 3:28 a.m.
Dec. 7, the man smashed a wooden Christmas decoration through a locked glass door on the building’s south side that leads into the Batavia City Council chambers, Batavia Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said. The Batavia Government Center is at 100 N. Island Ave., next to the Batavia Riverwalk. The video shows the man walking through the lobby near the City Council

was to celebrate the arrival of the millennium in 2000. Schielke said the idea would be to make the evening a family-friendly event, with activities beginning at 9 p.m. “It will be a nice event to bring the kids to,” Schielke said. Also as part of the event, the newly formed Batavia Community Band plans to perform a few songs at the Peg Bond Center, Schielke said. The band recently played at the city’s Celebration of Lights festival. In other business, the winners of Batavia MainStreet’s banner contest were recognized. Batavia MainStreet teamed up with Batavia High School graphics design students to create seasonal ban-
ners that will be placed on light poles in downtown Batavia. Students designed up to three banners to be displayed in the downtown in the spring, summer and fall in the 20142015 seasons. Winners were chosen by a combination of Facebook likes and a judging committee. The winners included: Hunter Nott – spring banner, Brooke Belair – summer banner, and Cassie Sychta – fall banner. In addition, the runners up also will be displayed on the Batavia Plaza and Finn Street parking lot poles. Those include: Ken Ryan – spring banner, Colby Green – summer banner and Lauren Tollios – fall banner.

bschory@shawmedia.com In a cost-cutting consolidation move, 37 of the TCF Bank branches located in Chicago-area and Northwest Indiana Jewel-Osco stores will be closed by the end of March, TCF National Bank announced Dec. 11. The consolidation will affect five Kane County locations: 119 Randall Road, Batavia; 652 Kirk Road, St. Charles; 465 N. Route 47, Sugar Grove; 800 N. Main St., Elburn; and 375 Randall Road, South Elgin. TCF Bank spokesman Mark Goldman said there was no “average” number of employees per branch bank, but that the consolidation will affect approximately 200 employees. “It is our focus and intent to retain as many as possible
at TCF,” Goldman said. “We are working with them and encouraging them to apply for other positions.” TCF is based in Wayzata, Minn., and is closing its downtown Minneapolis branch as well, the company announced in a statement. TCF has partnered with Jewel-Osco stores for the past 16 years, officials said. TCF will remain the primary banking partner for Jewel, as it will be keeping 118 of its branch locations, Goldman said. In all, the bank currently has 199 branch locations in Illinois and Indiana. “We have one of the largest bank footprints of any bank in the Chicago area,” Goldman said. The decision to consolidate the branches was based on a comprehensive review of the TCF branch network to see
solidated and resources could be deployed in other products and services, Goldman said. TCF added 52 ATMs at bus platforms in Chicago, he said. “Another factor is the nature of how our customers bank is evolving,” Goldman said. “As more have the capability to do online and mobile banking through smartphone banking, the amount of foot traffic has decreased.” TCF now offers mobile and Android applications for customers to use, so they see less need to go into a branch to do banking, he said. A spokeswoman for Jewel did not return a voicemail message or an email requesting comment on the closures and whether the grocery company plans to have another bank step in after TCF leaves.

Batavia native uses childhood as inspiration for book By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Film and television screenwriter Kevin Jakubowski said his new novel, “8-Bit Christmas,” is “a love letter to Batavia in many ways.” Jakubowski’s hometown of Batavia serves as the backdrop of his first book, which he describes as a comedic look at “kid pop culture” in the 1980s. The story follows 9-year-old Jake Doyle who desperately wishes to get a new Nintendo Entertainment System for Kevin Christmas. Jakubowski Only one kid in Batavia – the rich kid – has a Nintendo system and won’t let anyone else play it. A “comedically tragic” accident involving a Nintendo system causes an uproar in Batavia, and parents are set on banning the gaming system from the city. So Doyle and his buddies set out to try to get their hands on a Nintendo system despite the obstacles. “It’s sort of in the vein of the TV show ‘The Wonder Years,’ or the movies ‘A Christmas Story,’ ‘The Sandlot’ and ‘Stand By Me,’ – movies that are narrated by an older narrator looking back on his childhood,” he said. “It’s definitely inspired by my own childhood growing up in Batavia.” Jakubowski said he considered changing the name of the town and setting the novel somewhere in the Chicago area, but decided against it. “There was really no reason to,” he said. “I definitely poke fun at the town, but I feel like it’s my town. I feel like I’m almost poking fun at myself. ... It’s all lighthearted fun.” Jakubowski is now working as a film and television screenwriter and lives in Santa Monica, Calif. He said this year, he has done most of his writing for Comedy Central’s “Brickleberry,” which is produced by comedian Daniel Tosh. Jakubowski said he is also writing for shows on Nickelodeon that are now in the pilot stage.
If you go Kevin Jakubowski recently published his first novel, “8-Bit Christmas,” which takes place in his hometown of Batavia. Jakubowski will be signing books and giving a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. Registration is required and can be completed by calling 630-879-1393, ext. 500. He also will sign books from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 21, at Limestone Coffee and Tea, 8 W. Wilson St., Batavia; and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at The Paper Merchant, 320 S. Third St., Geneva. He also co-wrote the comedy film “Assassination of a High School President,” starring Bruce Willis and Mischa Barton. Jakubowski said he wanted to write “8-Bit Christmas” as a book, but hopes to turn it into a film. “It was really fun for me to kind of flex a different creative muscle,” he said. “It was fun to find my voice in something that didn’t have to be as structured as a screen play.” He said his own experiences growing up in the 1980s also inspired the novel, which hit shelves on Nov. 1. Kids went to great lengths to get their hands on a Nintendo Entertainment System because “before then, there wasn’t anything as cool as that,” he said. He noted one of his friends, who had never had a Nintendo Entertainment System as a child, purchased one when he turned 18 – long after more modern gaming consoles had been out. “That’s the length people went to,” Jakubowski said. “People have such a reverence for Nintendo. It seemed to strike a chord.”
Batavia native Kevin Jakubowski recently wrote the book “8-bit Christmas,” which is set in Batavia.

Schmidt to bring laughs to Zanies in St. Charles By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Less than three years after graduating from Bolingbrook High School in 1983, Lenny Schmidt was appearing at the highly respected The Comedy Store in Hollywood, Calif. Along with doing stand-up comedy, Schmidt has appeared in such movies as “Joe Dirt” and “The Ugly Truth” and in television shows like “Bones,” “True Blood” and “Big Love.” Schmidt, who now lives in Los Angeles, will be back in the area when he appears at Zanies at Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles, through Saturday, Dec. 28. More information is available by visiting www.stcharles. zanies.com. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Schmidt about the upcoming show.
Eric Schelkopf: It seems like the Zanies club in St. Charles is a regular spot for you. Lenny Schmidt: Yeah, I’ve been playing it for years. I taped my third CD there, actually. It’s a great room. I love

that room, actually.
ES: What do you like about it? LS: I’m from the area, so I get a ton of people that come up from Bolingbrook to see the shows. And for a big room, you don’t lose the crowds. It feels like a small room. I tend to go in the audience a lot and whip up the crowd, and it’s easier to do with an intimate crowd because they are all into it and listening. I’m still just a blue collar guy from the Chicago area. Not a whole lot has changed for me, personality-wise. So, basically it’s just a roomful of people like me. It feels like I am at home.
ES: What should people expect from the show? LS: My whole act always revolves around real life and real-life situations, and what I’m going through. And what I talk about now is being a single dad, and that my kids are 2,000 miles away. I go back home to see them as much as I can. And that’s my life now.
ES: It seems like that would be material that a lot of people could relate to. LS: Yeah, I think so. I got divorced a couple of years ago, and then you realize how many friends you have that are divorced or getting a divorce. I’ve always followed the stages of my life. I talked about
dating when I was single, and being married when I was married. A lot of times, it’s not the life you want, it’s the life you live. You find a way to adjust to the curves that you’re thrown in life, and go on. And that’s kind of what I talk about on stage.
pitched out here; all the big shows are auditioning out here; everything starts out here. Chicago is way better for development and for live performance than Los Angeles.
ES: You graduated from Bolingbrook High School in 1983, and less than three years later, you were performing at The Comedy Store in Hollywood. That’s pretty impressive. LS: Yeah, I moved to L.A.
es are Richard Pryor and Sam Kinison, because they got me into it. But two of the guys I watch now and really appreciate are Bill Burr and Louis C.K. They are two brilliant comics. They talk about not just the good stuff in life. That’s the thing that I think I learned from Pryor more than anything. Any guy that can bring pain on stage in life and make it funny, that’s huge.
almost right out of high school.
ES: Did you move to L.A. just because you thought it would be better for your career? LS: Yeah, that’s exactly why
ES: Who are some of your comedy influences? LS: My two biggest influenc-
I moved here.
ES: How do you think the two scenes compare, L.A. and Chicago? LS: Well, there’s a lot more work in L.A., as far as acting goes. There’s probably more work club-wise or stand-upwise in Chicago, but there’s also way more opportunity and exposure out here in L.A. All the shows are being
ES: What kind of advice would you give someone trying to break into comedy or acting? LS: If you are going to be a stand-up comedian, the best thing to do is just get on stage and start doing it. It takes you a while to figure out what you want to say, and how you are going to say it. As far as acting goes, you have to study. You have to take an acting class.

ST. CHARLES – Crashing pins, clanging ball returns and flashy arcade sound effects all conspire to make noise an essential bowling backdrop. At some houses, even extravagant carpeting seems to scream during the walk from the shoe rental station to the assigned lane. St. Charles North boys bowlers don’t doubt things can get loud at St. Charles Bowl or elsewhere, but they also aren’t ones to raise their voices through the din. Senior leadership, as defined by Isaac Marshall, happens subtly. Players-only meetings near the snack bar need not apply. “To me, it’s just about getting the whole team together and making sure nobody is being upset, trying to get them excited to be here,” Marshall said. “Maybe giving some advice on their shot and making sure that they’re listening and just following directions from coach.” In the handful of years since North, St. Charles East and Geneva made like their brethren to the bowling-loving west and added the sport to the extracurricular state, the North Stars boys have earned their share of accomplishments. Marshall rolled a perfect 300 game at Rockford’s Don Marshall Lanes at a tournament in January. In 2011-12, the North Stars advanced to the second day of the 24-team state tournament behind a senior-heavy group. After stumbling during the state series last season as a young team trying to find its way, North enters the winter with a quiet confidence. Marshall and fouryear teammate Bailey Sebas-

St. Charles North bowler Nate Ioriatti warms up Dec. 11 before the North Stars’ meet against Oswego at St. Charles Bowl. tian are the elder statesmen of a core group that includes Zac Cook, Nate Ioriatti, Alex Kummet, Steven Leitner, Alex Mundt and Nate Slinker. Like most teenagers, the North Stars veer off task from time to time, but don’t usually stray for long. Marshall and Ioriatti, Marshall’s assistant captain, need only point to a season-opening sweep of Bartlett to get North revved up again. “A lot of the guys on the
team, pretty much everybody knows what they’re doing for the most part,” said Ioriatti, a junior. “So the main goal is to just make sure that everybody’s focused and in the zone and we’re bowling as best as we can, because everybody here’s got the potential to bowl 280.” Short of tacking a flourescent-colored ad to the St. Charles Bowl bulletin board, coach Jeff Fett still wouldn’t mind a bigger rah-rah guy
on his side. Fett said it’s “really obvious” among bowler interactions when things are going well, but added the North Stars “tend to shut down a little bit” during adversity. Maybe that’s by design. “It’s not like we’ve got one standout guy and then four that are holding that one guy back,” Ioriatti said. “Everybody’s at the same level, so that keeps a really nice, even team aspect to this sport that’s usually gen-
erally judged pretty individually.” The IHSA added a regional component to the state series this season, decreasing the number of sectionals statewide but increasing from two to six the number of teams who advance from them. More wiggle room figures to bode well for bowlers with a tendency to grow tight. As Fett hopes the North Stars will learn, there’s no harm in opening up a bit.
