Longtime birders and eagle enthusiasts Margaret and Steven Myers of Blackberry Township go to great lengths to see a bald eagle. “There were days we would go to Carpentersville and stand out there for hours waiting for something to happen,” Margaret Myers said. And other days, it was wonderful watching them fishing and putting on a show.” Members of Kane County Audubon, they would park on side streets and walk to where Steve Myers, with his big camera lens, can get good photos of the Mooseheart eagles, Margaret Myers said, as well as other birds. She cautioned that Mooseheart has certain restrictions about setting up on its property to look at the birds, and said eagles get nervous around people. So the long lens guarantees good photos without upsetting the birds. “When they were nesting on Randall Road, we got good baby eaglet photos,” Margaret Myers said. “When we went to Oswego, we saw eagles, 10 at a time. I don’t care how many times you see them, they are just so majestic and wonderful and surreal. I’ll never get bored.” The United States’ national symbol is back from near extinction now in record-setting numbers, 5,975 counted by volunteers from Jan.1 to 15 this year, Illinois Audubon Executive Director Tom Clay said. Last year, volunteers counted 2,325. In statistics the Audubon provided dating back to 1992, the lowest population was 885 recorded in 1994. Volunteers do the counts on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers, with additional routes on the Ohio and Wabash rivers, Crab Orchard Lake, Horseshoe Lake Conservation Area and Carlyle Lake. Clay said the eagles’ resurgence is a result of the United States stopping the use of the pesticide DDT and other land protection and stewardship efforts in the last 40 years. “They were not extinct, but

Bald eagles are seen nesting on the campus of Mooseheart Child City and School. their numbers in the lower 48 states were certainly in peril,” Clay said. “They were certainly to the point they were on the threatened and endangered list, and now they can be de-listed.” Birders and conservationists are especially encouraged by the number of breeding pairs of bald eagles that are nesting, he said. “There are at least five nesting pairs in Sangamon County,” Clay said, referring to the downstate county where the state’s capital of Springfield is located. “You don’t really think about the Grand Prairie of Sangamon County as bald eagle habitat, yet they are here.” Jerry Hope of St. Charles, historian for the Kane County Audubon chapter, said when the pesticide DDT was used, it prevented adult female eagles from utilizing calcium in their diets in order to make egg shells. So when they laid eggs, the shells were too soft to protect the developing bird. “When they laid eggs, it was a soft egg,” Hope said. “Their

numbers were down due to the thinning of egg shells. All birds of prey numbers were down due to the thinning of egg shells. The weight of an adult bird would crush the eggs during incubation.” Hope said the turning point for the birds was the 1972 prohibition of DDT and other chemical pesticides.

“The bald eagle population in the lower 48 states got down to 200 to 400 nesting pairs by the end of 1960 ... not counting Canada or Alaska, which did not use DDT,” Hope said. “The bald eagle was becoming dangerously low with the risk of extinction, and some areas had no eagles at all.” The last official count in Illinois puts nesting pairs at 200, he said. “That is a fantastic comeback. There were no known nesting pairs in Illinois pri-

or to that because of the DDT problem,” Hope said. “My wife Jean and I have conducted several bald eagle trips. You can just take a stroll from Quarry Park in Batavia and follow the Fox River south. You do that four or five times, and you’re going to find an eagle.” When the Myers can’t get out to look for eagles, they’ve got the Decorah, Iowa, eagle cam at www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles. The live camera is on day and night. “The daddy brings her fish to eat, and they take turns sitting on the nest,” Margaret Myers said. “Then she will leave the nest, and he sits on the eggs. It’s really sweet how they switch.” Margaret Myers said she sees the resurgence of bald eagles as not only a symbol of the nation, but a metaphor for it. “The eagle kind of went endangered and did not do well but [they] are now making a comeback,” she said. “Like our country has done so many times with the depression and wars. And then we make a comeback. I think it’s a great thing.”

Kathy Freedlund is a wellknown figure at the Batavia Park District. She has been an instructor for 27 years and began teaching yoga at the park district 16 years ago. In February, Freedlund received her 500-hour certification from the National Association of Certified Yoga Teachers. Freedlund became a fitness instructor because of her interest in health and exercise. She enjoys being active and is a strong advocate for getting fit. “I like to keep moving,” she said. “We only get one body. It’s not like a car that we can trade in when it fails.” Over the years, Freedlund’s classes have grown in popularity, and several of her fitness participants have been taking her classes for all 27 years. She offers a wide range of classes to suit individuals of all skill levels, including Gentle Chair Yoga, Relax & Renew Yoga and Flow

Yoga. Freedlund also teaches Shape & Tone and “Pole”ates, which combines Nordic walking and pilates. “I absolutely Kathy Freedlund love helping others achieve their fitness goals,” Freedlund said. “It’s very rewarding to see someone take up exercise and make it a lifelong habit.” Part of Freedlund’s success can be credited to her patience and her ability to modify for all skill levels. She firmly believes in adapting to everyone’s individual needs. People who attend her classes can expect to learn in a safe and judgment-free environment. “We need to keep in mind that we are all different,” Freedlund said. “It’s not about trying to keep up with anyone else. It’s about building

towards a goal and working safely to your own ability.” It took 15 years, but receiving her 500-hour certification was a huge milestone and one she was incredibly excited to receive. After all these years, Freedlund is still learning and growing as an instructor. “I have found that the more you learn about yoga, the less you realize you know,” Freedlund said. “It’s a lifelong process, and I will continue the learning journey as long as I can.” If you have not tried one of Kathy Freedlund’s classes, be sure to check out the offerings online at bataviaparks.org. It is important that you clearly communicate your vision needs to the optical specialist when being fitted for bifocals. The reading prescription on the bottom segment of the lens should provide a correction for the distance at which you read printed material. Reading distances vary; while some may hold a book or tablet 18 inches from their eyes, others simply place their reading material and devices on the table and read at a greater distance. With this in mind, reading glasses may not necessarily be helpful for reading the script on a computer monitor, which may be 24 inches away from your eyes. Thus, careful consideration must be given to matching the prescription with the task at hand. P.S. Progressive lenses provide clear vision at three distances and usually offer all the vision correction that a person will need in one pair of eyeglasses.

Batavia girl gets missing scooter back By ERIC SCHELKOPF \jZ_\cbfg]7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd BATAVIA – An electric scooter used by an 8-year-old Batavia girl who has spina bifida was returned to the girl the morning of April 14 after

being removed from a neighbor’s house on the night of April 12. “It was returned, thankfully,” said Shelby Mertes, the mother of 8-year-old Camy, who was born with spina bifida. “It allowed her to have a

On the morning of April 14, the scooter was returned to the same location. Mertes said she doesn’t know who might have taken the scooter. “I’m chalking it up to youthful mischief,” Mertes said. “I do feel the police department was on top of it. Enough people were talking about it in the community. We had an outpouring of support.” At the time the scooter went missing, a basket hanging on the front of the scooter had Camy’s helmet in it, along with some small stuffed ani-

Bus shelters part of bigger transit plan XjcfYf[X7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd

Leanne Redden IK8 8Zk`e^ <o\Zlk`m\ ;`i\Zkfi shelters and concrete pads. Installation began in fall 2012, according to the RTA, and everything was completed by the end of 2013. The improvements were recommended in the Kane County Randall Road Pace Route 529 Plan, the village of South Elgin Transit Improvement Plan and the Kane County 2040 Long Range Transit Plan Community Planning projects, the release stated.

Pedestrian improvements along Pace Route 529 also were supported with a $2.4 million Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant, according to the RTA. The release indicated that the Kane County Department of Transportation has also received $1.3 million in CMAQ funding for improvements along Pace Route 801, including bus shelters, crosswalk markings, pedestrian signals, accessible ramps and sidewalks. “One of our goals is to eliminate barriers that may exist to a person riding our transit system, and these capital projects literally build the connections necessary to retain current riders and attract new ones,” RTA Acting Executive Director Leanne Redden said in the release. Schielke said he has to temper his excitement because – although the project is moving as quickly as it can – it won’t happen overnight. “It’s coming,” he said. “Good things are worth waiting for.”

To Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke, the bus shelters installed along Randall Road in recent years represent more than a safe place for riders to wait for a Pace bus. The structures are part of a broader transit plan that will connect riders along Pace Routes 529 and 801 to such regional destinations as O’Hare Airport, he said. “We’re putting the pieces into place at the moment,” said Schielke, who represents Kane County on the Pace suburban bus board. The big-picture plan involves shoulder construction on Interstate 90, Schielke said, but having acceptable pickup points along Randall Road was an important component. According to a Regional Transportation Authority news release, about $880,000 in grants from the Federal Transit Administration and the RTA’s Innovative, Coordination and Enhancement program funded the 33 bus

Volunteers remove animals March 11 from a farm near Hampshire. The volunteers were recognized April 8 at a Kane County Board meeting.

Volunteers who helped save petting zoo animals receive standing ovation By ASHLEY SLOBODA XjcfYf[X7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd GENEVA – Volunteers who helped move nearly 100 animals from an impounded petting zoo last month told the Kane County Board they’d do it all over again. The volunteers – some of whom since have adopted the rescued animals, given them medical care and welcomed them on their property – received a standing ovation for their efforts at the County Board meeting April 15. “What you see behind me is a representation of people who gave their generosity and time,” said Barb Jeffers, Kane County Health Department executive director. Dozens of people responded March 11 to Kane County Animal Control’s call for help

when the animals – including llamas, horses, chickens, goats and donkeys – were moved from a farm in rural Hampshire Township to an undisclosed location near Maple Park. It followed the March 5 arrest of the petting zoo’s owner, Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin, on one count of cruelty to animals and one count of a violation of an owner’s duty to provide adequate food, shelter and water and vet care to prevent suffering, both misdemeanors. Jeffers said the volunteers – who showed up with such equipment as trucks and hitches – “helped us put the animals in a better place.” The volunteers cheered and clapped when Animal Control

Administrator Robert Sauceda said the animals have been forfeited from Fiebelkorn’s care. She missed a Friday deadline to put up $30,000 as required for the care of her impounded animals. All but seven of the animals have been adopted, Sauceda said, adding Animal Control is working to find homes for the others. In addition to the volunteers, the Kane County Board also recognized one of its

own – Mike Kenyon. Kenyon, R-South Elgin, recently was named a Prairie Farmer Master Farmer. “It’s about time,” said board member T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, presenting Kenyon with a plaque. Since 1925, the Master Farmer program has recognized the finest farmers in Illinois. Recipients are judged on farming excellence, community stewardship and agricultural leadership, Kane County Farm Bureau Manager Steve Arnold said, noting it had been decades since a Kane County farmer was recognized.

New firearms range planned for Sheriff’s Office ty because personnel must not only travel off-site but also must work around the other agencies’ schedules and, in the case of the outdoor range, inclement weather and daylight hours, Perez said. “When the new firearms range is erected on our grounds, it’s a matter of they’ll walk 100 yards,” he said. Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said in an email that use of St. Charles’ range cost $2,000 last year. Exact overtime costs related to firearms training is difficult to determine because the department doesn’t keep separate overtime records, and some deputies accomplished some of the qualifications during normal working hours, Gengler said. An estimate of what it could cost is $60,000 to $80,000, Gengler said, noting that is based on about 2,300 hours the sheriff’s office had reserved on the St. Charles range.

“This would be for a year and total estimate if we had to pay all of our staff to qualify when the range is available and not necessarily when the deputies are available,” he said. Gengler said the estimate accounts for the state mandated qualification, not for additional training. That puts the sheriff’s office at a disadvantage, as one of the biggest dollar lawsuits filed against police departments is a failure to train, he said. “By us not having a range,” Gengler said, “we would be mostly focusing on just the state mandated qualification and not be able to provide consistent and quality tactical training to our staff.” The new range will allow officers to train for various situations and conditions, Perez said, adding that a squad car will be able to be brought inside. Classroom space is also

planned, he said. Other agencies are interested in using the new facility, including North East Multi-Regional Training. NEMRT Director Phil Brankin said his academy provides training to more than 300 police departments in metropolitan Chicago. Because its classes rotate throughout its service area, Brankin said he needs good classroom facilities in dozens of locations. His organization would get a “great deal of use” out of the Kane County sheriff’s classroom, as well as its firearms range, Brankin said. He said the organization currently doesn’t offer firearms training in Kane County. Brankin described the sheriff’s new facility as a good investment because it will help train law enforcement personnel outside of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez – who leads a department with more than 200 personnel needing firearms training – said it didn’t matter to him if a new shooting range would be completed during his term. He just wanted to know ground would be broken on the nearly $2 million project and it would be a reality, he said. In the weeks leading up to last month’s Kane County Board meeting, Perez and his staff stated their case for the firearms range, which came in more than $800,000 above initial estimates. The County Board had the foresight to plan an on-site firearms range when the sheriff’s Fabyan Parkway facility was built in the 1970s, he said. The need for such a facility never changed just because the sheriff’s office moved to

Route 38, he said. The County Board ultimately approved the extra funding needed to build the shooting range, which – depending on weather – should be completed by the end of October. “You have no idea what a big relief this has been to me,” said Perez, who is not running for re-election in November. The Kane County Sheriff’s Office has been without a shooting range for more than a year. Its Fabyan Parkway facility flooded and was contaminated by lead and mold, Perez said, noting it also had ventilation problems. Since then, Perez said, his 244 personnel – deputies, court security officers and corrections officers – have trained at the St. Charles Police Department’s outdoor range off Route 38. His office also has gotten help from North Aurora and Carpentersville, he said. This has resulted in overtime costs and lost productivi-

n a sea of fast food options, Muscle Maker Grill aims to serve up healthier fare. Since January, Muscle Maker Grill has been serving high-protein, low-calorie meals at its location at 1840 W. Main St. in St. Charles. Muscle Maker Grill’s mission is spelled out in its motto – “Great food with your health in mind.” It is the chain’s second location in Illinois. “Muscle Maker Grill is based on the East Coast,” said Jose Venegas, who owns and operates the St. Charles restaurant with Jeff Cade. “They are trying to bring the concept to the Midwest.” The other Illinois restaurant is in Rolling Meadows, which Venegas had managed for a year prior to his current position. Muscle Maker Grill was founded in 1995 in New Jersey, and today there are more than 200 Muscle Maker Grill restaurants open or under development throughout the United States. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Muscle Maker Grill sets itself apart from other restaurants in many ways. “We don’t fry products here, and our sauces are gluten free,” Cade said. “Our beef is grass fed, and our chicken is all natural.” Muscle Maker Grill is recommended by www.healthydiningfinder.com, a site run by dietitians. For those counting calories, patrons will find that information clearly listed on the menu. “I don’t know of another franchise that does healthy meals,” Venegas said. “Plus, the food is good. The food sells itself.”

Muscle Maker Grill in St. Charles offers a variety of wrap sandwiches.

The restaurant offers an array of options, from salads with gluten-free dressings to wraps, burgers and pasta. During the Lenten season, Muscle Maker Grill is serving such items as a crab burger and the Holy Guacamole Fish Wrap. Muscle Maker Grill also takes requests from customers.

“We listen to their feedback,” Venegas said. “If we hear a lot of people asking for a certain thing, we will try to accommodate them.” The restaurant also sells fruit smoothies with no sugar added, along with protein shakes, which have proved to be popular. “Sometimes [customers] come in just for our protein shakes,” Venegas said. Muscle Maker Grill has been partnering with nearby health clubs, including the XSport Fitness club located a few blocks from the restaurant. “The trainers at the club are refer-

ring their members here,” Venegas said. But the restaurant also is seeing customers who are just looking to eat healthier. “We have a good mix, from high school students to senior citizens,” Cade said. Muscle Maker Grill, is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. For information, visit www.musclemakergrill.com or call 847-660-7409. Muscle Maker Grill also offers delivery and catering.

Eric Schelkopf: Great talking to you. How were your shows this past weekend? Lily Costner: They were really great, a really wonderful turnout. My dad’s band has a great fan base. Schelkopf: I understand you are going to sing “Oh, Malley-Mae,” the song that you wrote for the album “Famous for Killing Each Other: Music from and Inspired by Hatfields & McCoys.” Costner: Yes, I will be singing that in my set. Schelkopf: I know that you performed it last year at the Grand Ole Opry. What was that experience like? Costner: It was really special. I don’t know if I will ever get another experience like that again. I just tried to soak it all in,

Schelkopf: Was there anything, in particular, that inspired you to write that song? Costner: It’s hard to say what exactly it was about it. It’s a series of images. The song itself comes from a child’s perspective, of being born into one of these families, Hatfields or McCoys, and not necessarily wanting to have that burden of that name, knowing that you are growing up just to potentially die in this feud. Schelkopf: Does the fact that you are doing this with your dad make the experience even more enjoyable? Costner: It certainly does. It’s a special experience to, No. 1, share the same passion as a parent, and then to actually go out and perform and to see that passion through together. He plays his brand of music, and I am out there playing my brand of music, and then we get to do this duet together. It’s our special moment that nobody can ever take away from the two of us. And we get to share it with perfect strangers who admire both of us. Schelkopf: I know that you’ve had some acting parts in the past. Given that your dad is probably best known as being an actor, did he ever put pressure on you to get into the business? Costner: No, no pressure at

I was very lucky in that my parents exposed me to a lot of different things, my sister and brother included. They exposed us to a lot of opportunities that were available to us. There was a lot of support and a lot of practicality about how you make a dream happen for yourself. They told us it takes a lot of hard work and practice. Schelkopf: Do you want to do more acting or music or do you need both in your life? Costner: I certainly feel like I want music in my life. I never

really needed or desired to be in the acting world. If our dad did a movie in the summertime, that was our summer camp. We’d go be with him on the sets, and sometimes we’d end up in those movies as extras or for fun, just because we were there and we wanted to be involved, we wanted to hang out. Schelkopf: So, it sounds like his movies didn’t take him away from the family, that he tried to include you guys as much as possible. Costner: They always worked really hard to keep us all together. Family was very important to all of us. Schelkopf: Is there a lot of

pressure just being the daughter of Kevin Costner? Costner: I would say there could be if I let it, but I don’t think we ever looked at it that way. That would be a bit more of a selfish perspective for us to take because of all the opportunities that it has provided us and our family over the years. Schelkopf: What are your short-term and long-term goals? Would you like to put an album out in the next year? Costner: My motto is to take one day at a time. But I’m just going to see where it takes me. Like I said, I really like having music in my life. I’m still figuring out how you make that a career.

Sugar Ray, Blues Traveler, more to rock RiverEdge Park in July By KARA SILVA bj`cmX7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd AURORA – This summer, RiverEdge Park in Aurora will set the stage with a popular American pop-rock group from the ’90s. Sugar Ray will perform July 6 at RiverEdge Park as part of the Under the Sun Tour, which also will feature rock band Blues Traveler and country-rock crooner Uncle Kracker, according to RiverEdge vice president of marketing Jim Jarvis, who

confirmed the tour’s stop after the information was leaked by Sugar Ray. With plans of making an official announcement for RiverEdge’s summer musical lineup in May, Jarvis stated in an email that Mark McGrath, lead singer of Sugar Ray, Tweeted that the Under the Sun Tour would be stopping at RiverEdge Park, and that the group was looking forward to playing at the venue. Information about the tour stop also is published on

Sugar Ray’s website. “It’s going to be a fun afternoon and evening of music – cool way to spend some outdoor summer time,” Jarvis wrote in an email. Jarvis said that there will be a couple of major concerts that will be a part of RiverEdge Park’s official event announcements May 1. RiverEdge Park is located at 360 N. Broadway St. in Aurora. Mrs. Geneva to compete for state title By KARA SILVA bj`cmX7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd

M

any a crown has graced the head of beauty pageant veteran and Geneva resident Nicole Elizabeth Cook. Formerly known as Nicole Rash, she represented her home-state, Indiana, in the 2008 Miss America pageant, qualifying as first-runner-up (second place), and nearly taking the Miss America title. Six years later, Cook is at it again. But this time, the 29-year-old will represent Geneva in the Mrs. Illinois America pageant at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Elgin Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. For information, visit www.mrsillinoisamerica.com. In its 34th year, the Mrs. America pageant is open to women 18 and older who are married – with or without children – and serves as the only nationally televised beauty pageant for married women. Kane County Chronicle features editor Kara Silva got a chance to chat with Cook about life in the world of beauty pageants and the upcoming competition. Kara Silva: How long have you been competing in beauty pageants? Nicole Elizabeth Cook: I’ve been competing in beauty pageants for quite a long time. I did a few when I was really young – about 6 or 7 years old – but it wasn’t quite the “Toddlers in Tiaras” style that you

Nicole Elizabeth Cook

see nowadays. ... I just really enjoyed it because I got to dress up like a princess, and no matter what happened – win, lose or draw – we always went to McDonald’s and got cookies afterward. So, I thought it was the best thing ever.

pageant is what you see on TV. But that’s only for a night. What you don’t see is the 364 other days that those women are out in their communities fighting for what they believe in and supporting the causes that are important to them.

Silva: Why did you decide to get involved in the Mrs. America pageant? Cook: I joke sometimes that pageants are kind of like my sport. I just really like competing and the opportunities that you get from doing it. Not so much the prizes or the crown or things like that, but really the volunteer and community opportunities that you get. ... I didn’t realize you could do anything beyond [Miss America], because you either age out or once you get married you can’t compete in [Miss America] anymore. ... I really like how the [Mrs. America] program is centered around empowering and encouraging women to really work together and build each other up and get involved in the community, whether it be through your children or through a cause that you’re really passionate about. ... It kind of just shows that even though you’re married or a little bit older, it doesn’t mean that you’re no longer beautiful. I think there is so much focus in today’s society about youth and beauty, and so I like that I can still be beautiful and still be successful and still be seen as a beauty queen even though I have gotten older and now I’m married.

Silva: What does it take to win a beauty pageant? What are the judges really looking for? Cook: It depends on the pageant system and age level (Miss, Teen, Mrs.). I think a lot of it has to do with confidence in yourself, knowing yourself and being completely confident in your own skin, and making sure that you relay your passions and your true purpose to the judges. ... And I think the judges are looking for someone who will use [the crown] for a purpose. ... The interview (which isn’t televised) is the most important part, and that’s where you really have to show them your true self.

Silva: Why is it important to have a pageant devoted to recognizing married women and what is the Mrs. America pageant’s purpose? Cook: The Mrs. America pageant’s purpose is to really show the importance of the modern American married woman. ... It really shows the diversity that there is and that there is not one right way to be married or to make your life. And so, it’s really just supporting and encouraging and highlighting all of the differences in the modern married woman and what that means in our society today. ... [The] Mrs. America pageant is just trying to show that really there is a lot more value to people who are raising our future – our children. Silva: Some people believe that beauty pageants are antiquated, antifeminist and demeaning toward women. How do you deal with the haters out there? Cook: I just feel like there are a lot of things that aren’t for everybody. Everybody has an opinion, and they are completely entitled to that. I would say that before you judge – just like anything – try it one time either as a contestant or a judge or even a spectator or just talk to a title holder. The biggest misconception is that it’s only focused on beauty. ... Once people get involved, there is a whole other side. The stage part of the

Silva: What is your platform? What message are you trying to get across by competing? Cook: I do some writing, and I am part of developing a website called InspirationalLadies.com, and it just basically interviews women from all across the country who are inspirational in some way. So, it could be that they are an amazing housewife ... who has a blog to help other people; or a doctor; or a lawyer; or someone in a powerful position like a CEO. It spans all across all of the different ways that women can be inspirational and powerful. And I love that platform of women helping women. Unfortunately women tend to think it’s the male roles that are bringing them down, but ... I see so much woman-on-woman hate, and it’s very disheartening to me. And I want to change that. ... I think that’s really keeping us down in a lot of situations. That’s my main platform and what I want to do. (Other platforms include working with children as part of the Children’s Miracle Network and an anti-smoking campaign.) Silva: You’re very involved in the community with volunteer work and philanthropy, but what do you do for you? What do you do for fun? Cook: I love reading a good book. I just finished the “Hunger Games” series and I watched the movies, which was fantastic. I also read “Pride and Prejudice” and some of the classics, which was really a goal for me this year. I like spending time with my husband and my little [Pomeranian] dog. They’re both my world. We go to First Baptist in Geneva, and we’re part of the worship team. ... I love having fellowship and community with other people. Friends and family are most important to me. It’s really what life is all about – relationships and spending time with each other because every day is a gift and you just have to treat it like that.

St. Charles North’s Nathan Bawolek (7) shoots over the head of St. Charles East’s John Cranfill on March 27 during North’s win.

North water polo enjoying banner year By KEVIN DRULEY b[ilc\p7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd ST. CHARLES – Tread water. Lunge. Stay rinsed. Repeat. St. Charles North boys water polo practice ended April 14 with a sequence that’s hardly been seen during the team’s 114-1 start. Thanks to a veteran core pushing the younger players and themselves, there’s not much moving in place here outside of conditioning drills. “We realize that we can play with some of the more elite teams, but we all have to be there fighting for the team, and we all have to sacrifice for that,” senior goaltender Collin Bawolek said. “But it’s a lot higher and a lot more confident.” North stayed on track with a runner-up finish April 12 at

the Naperville North tournament. The North Stars’ 12-6 loss to the host Huskies in the title match marked the first time they’ve allowed double-digit scoring this season. It also was the program’s first encounter with a team ranked No. 1 by Illpolo.com. Narrow victories against Stagg (8-7) and Schaumburg (95) braced the now 18th-ranked North Stars for a challenge that could resurface should they meet the Huskies in next month’s postseason. “We have to absorb their pressure a little bit more,” Bawolek said. “We had a lot of turnovers that game. Just work on holding the ball, playing strong with that and holding our defense.” Of course, North doesn’t just trap and win in an ultra-defensive manner. Junior

John Pretet (eight goals) and senior Nick Traxler (five goals, five assists) paced the attack during the tournament, with Pretet operating in the hole near the front of the goal and Traxler driving in from the perimeter. The usual suspects struck in the program’s first victory April 10 against perennial power Neuqua Valley, although contributions from Ryan Helfers and senior defender Tim Steele helped put North in position. Until last week, the only person in North’s huddles who had defeated the Wildcats was coach Chris Cloy, then a student-athlete at Sandburg. “We put a lot of emotion into it and everyone got up and ready to go,” said Traxler, who scored twice in the final 4:10 to snap a late tie.

Last month, Bawolek notched a personal milestone by recording his first career shutout in a 15-0 rout of visiting Hinsdale South. The team’s full-time goalie since 2013, Bawolek flirted with the feat last season before yielding a goal in the final quarter. After “learning the ropes from the upperclassmen” as a freshman and sophomore, Bawolek, a longtime swimmer who was part of North’s 10thplace 200-yard freestyle relay at the state meet, hunkered down. Swimming helped build Bawolek’s stamina for his first water polo experience in 2011, but it turns out he leaned on a short-lived stint as a freshman soccer goalie more than he fathomed. “I feel like I just combined the two and it worked out,”

Bawolek said. Along with Bawolek, Steele and Traxler, North starts a fourth senior in Ross Davis, another swimming veteran. Classmates Raphael Jabbar and Raheem Khan are reserves. Cloy, in his sixth season, calls this crop of seniors among the most dedicated he’s guided at North. Keep going, and the superlatives could keep flying. The program is after its first state tournament berth, too, as the North Stars await next week’s postseason seedings. “Kids are working really hard,” Cloy said. “They’re listening to what we’re asking them to do and they’re able to see some of the payoff in some of the games that we’ve been having, so it’s been exciting.”
