Bulldogs tennis has same players, new lineup By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia brands its student sections as “The Dog Pound” in a nod to the school’s alliterative nickname, Bulldogs. Apart from the occasional spirited barking of football players, perhaps no athletic team personifies the moniker better than the boys tennis program this season. Batavia returned each of its top 11 players from 2013, but instead of forging with the status quo, coach Brad Nelson conferred with athletes about some role reversals. The result isn’t particularly different than past seasons. The Bulldogs may have changed positions in the lineup, but they’re equally fierce. “I think we can all play pretty well together after a
couple of matches under our belt,” senior Jeff Lorden said. “So I think it was just figuring out who we were going to play with, and then once we figured that out, we could just start working together.” Lorden played No. 1 doubles alongside junior Adam Maris last season. The duo helped Batavia to a second straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division team title before losing a state qualifying match to Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy at a daunting West Aurora Sectional. Coupled with a handful of other close sectional calls that ultimately produced zero state qualifiers, the result weighed on the shuffling. So, too, did the conference landscape. Knowing St. Charles North was especially strong in doubles, the Bulldogs moved former top singles play-
er Ryan Sterling alongside Maris while grouping Lorden with junior Josh Boyle in the second doubles slot. “You have to be a little strategic about balancing that out a little bit,” Nelson said. “That’s what we looked at going into the year.” North visited Batavia on May 8 after edging fellow contender St. Charles East, 4-3, last month. The Saints topped the host Bulldogs on April 29, 4-3. Entering the May 3 Huntley quad, Batavia’s four doubles pairs were a combined 59-7. Each of the top three groups – including the No. 3 team of sophomores Andrew Nelson and Emerson Hinzy – had at least 17 wins, helping the Bulldogs to three straight weekend event victories. While East’s doubles split went a long way toward its dual win, the top two tandems
held serve. Friends off the court, Sterling and Maris hardly doubted that reality. They aren’t cutups, but they hardly get particularly down on themselves, either. “I don’t think I will ever get too tense, even if we were playing in the best, most prestigious tournament in the world,” Maris said. “He always is going to make me laugh, or sometime during the match. It’s easy to play with when you have someone who makes it that easy. And he’s skilled, so it takes a lot of the pressure off.” Senior Tim Murat, who climbed from second to first singles after Sterling’s changeof-scenery shift, still acknowledges some anxiety. Batavia drew many of the same teams as last season in the Saturday, May 24, Wau-
bonsie Valley Sectional. Still, the April 28 4-3 victory against one of them – traditional Suburban Christian Conference power Marmion – boosted the Bulldogs’ confidence about stacking things up for state. “It’s a little bit more pressure on us, and it’s more motivation that everyone wants to end their senior year strong,” Murat said. “Losing a decent chunk of our starting lineup [after this season], we want to go out with a bang.” Murat calls Nelson’s coaching approach “more heavily mental this year” as some athletes blend singles principles with doubles, or vice-versa. However they line up, the Bulldogs always have one thing in mind, and it speaks to their strategic nature. “Make sure we’re playing steady from the back,” Murat said, “and then take our oppor-

BATAVIA – Batavia High School junior Kelly VanTreeck wanted to make a video that showed how harmful bullying can be. Along with sending a powerful message, the video also recently took home a firstplace award in the annual Chicagoland Television Educators Council Video Festival held at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville. She took home the award in the category of public service announcement. “I never expected it at all,” VanTreeck said, in talking about the honor. “I hope it will make more people aware of their actions. A lot of parents and classmates told me it was really good.” In the video, a high school girl is bullied by two other girls who place a sticky note on her backpack. She goes home, and the viewer discovers that she has received many of these sticky notes, and the viewer sees her pain. The video is being shown on BATV as a public service announcement. VanTreek is a video production student at the high school. VanTreek’s honor was one of four first-place awards Batavia High School won at the festival. Vincent Tieri took first

BATAVIA – To Batavia High School senior Joseph Doyle, working in the dining services department at The Holmstad retirement community in Batavia has been more than just a job. “We’re friendly with almost all the residents here,” Doyle said. “It’s been more of a close relationship than just working for them.” Doyle was one of nine graduating seniors May 7 who received $1,000 scholarships from The Residents’ Association Scholarship Committee at The Holmstad. Doyle plans to study engineering at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The committee awarded $9,000 worth of scholarship money to graduating high school seniors whom work in the dining services department at The Holmstad. Since 1992, Holmstad residents have awarded $93,100 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have worked in The Holmstad’s dining services department for at least six months. “We like to encourage them in their education and let them know that we are proud of them Scholarship Committee
Chair Linnea Root said. To select the winners, the committee reviewed each student’s transcript, autobiography and recommendations from two teachers, a counselor and their Holmstad supervisor. The funds come from several sources of resident activities, including The Holmstad’s annual holiday bazaar. Geneva High School senior Alice Paul, who also was awarded a scholarship, has been working at The Holmstad for more than a year. She plans to study psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “It’s been a nice experience,” she said. “You get to know a lot of the residents really well.” Other students who were awarded scholarships include Batavia High School seniors Delaney Corbitt, Jeffrey Heise, Mitchell Kavalec and Gabriel Monarrez. Geneva High School seniors Benjamin Borowiak and Stephanie Condon also were awarded scholarships, along with West Aurora High School senior Francisco Gama. In addition to awarding the scholarships, Holmstad residents gave all the 18 graduating seniors who worked in dining services $50 each.

Residents with allergies might face a tough transition to warm weather this year, local experts said. Remember the polar vortex? That long and brutal winter has delayed the growth of trees and the production of their pollen. Those with tree-related allergies might have enjoyed low pollen levels so far, but a “double whammy” allergy season could be in store, said Dr. Sakina Bajowala from the Kaneland Allergy and Asthma Center in North Aurora. The tree season historically has begun in early to midMarch, but it didn’t get started until April this year. That delay means the season will peak with high pollen counts during the grass season, which is expected to start this month like normal, Bajawala said. “For individuals who are allergic, they can feel pretty miserable during that time,” she said. Beyond the usual allergic symptoms of runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing, a combination of high pollen counts
could trigger trouble breathing and wheezing. An airway that’s inflamed from allergic triggers could develop into asthma, Bajawala said. She noticed her usual influx of patients came in later this year compared to past years. Dr. Priya Bansal noticed the same thing at the Asthma and Allergy Center in Bloomingdale. Instead of activity in midMarch, Bansal started seeing patients come in two weeks later. The polar vortex might have contributed, but the pollen counts collected in the Chicago area keep increasing year after year, said Bansal, the immediate past president of the Illinois Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Like Bansal, Beth Koch of Sugar Grove recommends that people take their allergy medications a month before the season hits. “A lot of people don’t think ahead – they wait until [their allergies] are bad,” Koch said. Koch said she used to bathe her son every day to make sure the pollen was out of his hair. She noticed he had spring allergies as early as two years old.
Koch recommends that parents start charting when their children display allergy symptoms; when they occur and what the weather was like at the time. Treatment for the Koch family includes immunotherapy in the form of allergy shots, and also over-the-counter medicine. Koch said it has made a world of difference for her family. Another person who has thrived with immunotherapy is Tom Moeller of North Aurora. Moeller said he is allergic to “pretty much everything outside.” After missing two days of work in August with acute allergic symptoms, he began receiving immunization shots in December. Moeller said he actually is excited for the allergy season because he wants to see if his twice-weekly series of three shots at the Kaneland Allergy and Asthma Center has been worth it. “I’m hoping that people who are suffering from allergies will reconsider going in for treatment,” he said. “The way they’re done now as opposed to 20 years ago is more convenient.”

ComEd’s announcement this month that higher electric supply rates would result in rate increases for its customers also will affect rates for municipal electric utilities, a spokesman said. “It’s not the ComEd rate increase. These charges result from the PJM auction,” ComEd spokesman David O’Dowd said. “So that is what is driving this is a new electric supply rate. It results in an increase in energy supply costs
regardless of who a customer chooses for their electricity. This impacts rates regardless of who you receive your energy supply from. It will affect all utility customers regardless of who their utility provider is.” The increase will cover payments PJM makes to power generators to ensure there is enough power to meet peak demand on high-power usage days, O’Dowd said. PJM is a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of 13 states and the District

of Columbia, according to its website. The increase is capacity charges paid by all utility customers, O’Dowd said, regardless of whether they are ComEd customers, have municipal utilities like Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles, or if they are part of an aggregate package for lower costs. The increases will begin Sunday, June 1, he said. Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said ComEd’s price increase and the increase to be seen by all aggregate packages “and all of the cheaper electricity are rapidly coming to an end.” Geneva has its own gas-powered generators for peak periods and is a member of and has a contract with Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency for an entitlement share of 35 megawatts in Prairie State Generating Company. “The analysis we have conducted shows that Geneva’s prices will be between 7 percent and 18 percent lower than rates being provided between the aggregates and ComEd,” Burns said. “Our investment in Prairie State is long term, 30 years, not just for tomorrow and today, but we are focused on 11,000 tomorrows to come,” Burns said. “Our power portfolio proves that our investment is a wise one and is in the best long-term interest of our citizens and businesses.” Officials from Batavia and St. Charles did not return messages seeking comment.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – In response to the recent “sexting” incident in Batavia, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon is encouraging parents to talk to their kids about responsible use of social media. “This is really a teaching opportunity,” he said May 6 during his monthly meeting with the media. McMahon raised the issue the day after the Batavia Police Department announced charges would not be filed against the Rotolo Middle School students involved in the incident. Police have said students took inappropriate nude images of themselves and shared them with other students through cellphone text messages. Although two boys have been charged with possession of child pornography in a sexting case in Barrington, McMahon said criminal charges didn’t need to be filed in the Batavia case to accomplish the goal of educating students about the inherent dangers of sharing such content. Provocative images could attract attention from people with ill intent, McMahon said. For example, he said, children who post such pictures are more likely to be targeted by those looking to exploit them for commercial gain. McMahon advises parents to talk with their children about responsible use of social media, preferably when the kids are first given access to a cellphone or social media. Parents should address the potential short-term and longterm effects that come with sharing certain personal information, as well as the fact that not everyone has good intentions, McMahon said.

SMOKING GUN
adno=0275553
According to a recent population-based study, smokers are more likely to need cataract surgery. Researchers found that smoking more than 15 cigarettes per day led to a 42% higher likelihood of needing cataract surgery during 12 years of follow-up. The good news to report is the fact that the study also found that giving up the smoking habit reduced the need for cataract surgery (but not to the level of someone who had never smoked). Generally speaking, the longer a person smokes, the longer it takes for his or her risk of developing cataracts to decline once he or she decides to quit. That means that even smokers with a 15-a-day habit remained at significant risk 20 years after quitting. P.S. Cigarette smoke contains toxic metal ions (including cadmium) that can accumulate in smokers’ eye lenses.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kane County officials May 9 celebrated the groundbreaking of a nearly $2 million project that will increase training opportunities for law enforcement. “This has been a culmination of many years of planning, some level of frustration,” Sheriff Pat Perez said to a group gathered at the site of the future Kane County Regional Training Center. Located on the same campus as the Kane County Judicial Center and Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the 5,700-square-foot firearms range will have six shooting lanes and the capability to accommodate different training scenarios, such as traffic stops and low-light conditions. “We’re very, very excited about this project,” Perez said. The Kane County Sheriff’s Office has been without a shooting range for more than a year. Its Fabyan Parkway facility flooded and was contaminated by lead and mold.

Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez and Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen (both in center) toss ceremonial shovelfuls of dirt May 9 during a groundbreaking ceremony. Since then, the sheriff’s employees have been forced to rent time at St. Charles’ outdoor range, which can be logistically difficult when inclement weather preempts their plans, Perez said. “We’re a slave to the weather,” he said. Other agencies will be able to rent time at the Kane County Regional Training Center, which also will include a classroom, Perez said. On May 9, Perez celebrated
its groundbreaking with others from the sheriff’s office, as well as County Board members and County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, who welcomed the crowd. “Today we’re celebrating progress,” Lauzen said. Construction on the center is expected to be completed by the end of October. Cordogan Clark – a full-service architectural, engineering and construction firm – is working with the county on the project.

Grant to fund St. Charles park projects By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com The St. Charles Park District is preparing to make the Fox River more accessible to those wanting to partake in water sports. A $259,000 grant funded by the state’s Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development Program will help the Park District complete several projects at Ferson Creek Park, including the installation of a paddle-sport appropriate dock. Laura Rudow, the superintendent of parks and planning, said the amenity will be open to kayaks, rowing sculls, canoes and paddle boards. An equipment rack also will be available so the watercraft can be safely stored, she said. “Had we not gotten the grant, we wouldn’t have done it,” Rudow said. The St. Charles Park District was one of nearly 50 park or for-
est preserve districts to receive a share of the $16.5 million in OSLAD funding this year. Gov. Pat Quinn announced the recipients in April. “Parks and outdoor recreational activities help make Illinois a great place to live and work,” Quinn said in a written statement. “These projects will create jobs, allow more families to get active outdoors and promote healthy lifestyles.” Recipients are required to contribute at least half of the total project cost. For Ferson Creek Park, Rudow said, the grant also will help with shoreline stabilization, the creation of outdoor classroom space and regular capital improvements that include replacing the fishing pier with one that is ADA compliant and replacing the playground and pavilion. The upgrades should be completed in upcoming years, Rudow said, noting not everything
was budgeted for 2014. The Kane County Forest Preserve District was another OSLAD recipient. It was awarded $389,200 to help acquire a high-quality woodland in Big Rock Township. The 37-acre property, which is within the Big Rock Creek watershed, has pocket wetlands and ponds underneath hardwoods, according to the forest preserve district. Plans for the site include a woodland/wetland interpretive trail, a parking area, an overlook and habitat restoration. Forest Preserve Executive Director Monica Meyers said in a written statement that the organization is thrilled to receive the grant and to have the ability to preserve and protect the open space. “Big Rock Creek is one of the highest-quality tributaries to the Fox River,” she said. “This project offers a first-time opportunity to invest in land in this section of the watershed.”

Taste of New Orleans Photos by Sandy Bressner - sbressner@shawmedia.com
Historic home converted into Patten House restaurant By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – St. Charles resident Nancy Luyten is bringing a taste of New Orleans to downtown Geneva. Since 2013, Luyten has been transforming a historic house at 124 S. Second St. in downtown Geneva into a multi-level restaurant and lounge called The Patten House. “We’re going to have a New Orleans flair,” Luyten said. “We have some incredibly good recipes and the house lends itself to that. It’s more of a French Quarter-type menu. We’re not doing the heavy fried food. We’re doing a lot of seafood, poor boy sandwiches and gumbo. Some of the recipes are from chefs we’ve known from New Orleans.” Those who attended the 60 Men Who Cook fundraiser in April got to try the restaurant’s gumbo. “It went over well,” Luyten said. The house, located in the city’s historic district, was built in 1857 by lumber man George Patten, and Luyten purchased the two-story house in March 2013. Luyten said she wanted the restaurant’s name to reflect the family’s heritage. “I wanted to honor the family and the tradition of the house,” Luyten said. According to historic records, the house served as a temporary Kane County courthouse between March 1890 and September 1892, when the present courthouse, located at 100 S. 3rd St, was completed. The project to transform the house into a restaurant is winding down, and Luyten hopes to open the restaurant’s doors later this month. “The whole property needed a lot of care,” Luyten said. “When I bought the house, there were a lot of shrubs and trees on the property, and you could not even see the house.” Luyten put a new face on the house inside and out.
“We upgraded everything, including putting in new bathrooms, adding air conditioning and redoing the existing floors,” she said. “It just needed to be upgraded, especially for commercial use.” At the same time, Luyten said she wanted to keep the historic feel of the house. “We kept the integrity of everything in the house we could,” she said. Luyten turned to local businesses to help with the project, including Elburn-based Good Call Plumbing and Heating. The furniture and furnishings in the house are supplied by such local businesses as Geneva Home Works and the Strawflower Shop in Geneva. “I wanted to stay local,” she said. Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns lauded Luyten for her efforts. “Nancy’s efforts are a quintessential example of sweat equity,” Burns wrote in an email. “Her hard work, patience and attention to detail [have] resulted in a new landmark for downtown Geneva. I’m very proud of her and look forward to celebrating the grand opening of The Patten House and all that it will provide to our community.” The Patten House will feature five different dining rooms on two levels along with a bar. “We have a lot of spaces for parties and banquets,” Luyten said. The restaurant and bar will be able to seat about 150 people at one time, she said. The Patten House will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Appetizers will run between $8 to $12, and entrees will be priced between $17 and $25, Luyten said. “I don’t want to be the type of restau-

rant that we price out anybody,” she said. Luyten said she is happy with how the project has come together.
“We’ve done and redone the house so it would be exactly as we wanted,” she said.

‘Whose Live’ coming to Batavia By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com
P
robably best known for his appearances on the television show “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” Greg Proops will join his castmates on stage Friday, May 30, at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre for “Whose Live Anyway,” a live version of the show. The Batavia Arts Centre is located on the Batavia High School campus at 1201 Main St., Batavia. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available by visiting bataviafineartscentre.org. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Proops about the upcoming show. Eric Schelkopf: You are probably best known as an improvisational comedian on the show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Why do you like being on that show? Greg Proops: It’s opened up a whole world for me. I can’t say enough about how it has opened every door for me as far as being a comedian. I’ve worked with Ryan Stiles from “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” for over 20 years now. We’re getting on to 25 years. He’s just a pleasure to work with. He’s so professional. It’s just fun. We make each other laugh, and we really try to hit the stage as hard as we can. All in all, it’s been a positive experience. I got lucky and ended up on a show [that] ran for 14 years, and then out of nowhere, 10 years later, we’re back on the air again. What are the chances? Schelkopf: What is the difficulty in doing improvisational comedy? Proops: There’s really not much diffi-
culty. Making the stuff up is fun for us. We like flying by the seat of our pants, and we like the challenge of the audience yelling stuff out. Really, the difficulty is making it as funny as possible and not disappointing yourself. Schelkopf: So, is that it, you are playing off the rest of the cast and the audience, and it just comes naturally to you? Proops: I don’t think anything comes naturally for anyone. I think you have to work at all these things. It’s like saying someone is a natural athlete. That doesn’t acknowledge they put in the time. I have been doing this for over 30 years, so I put the time in and probably perform 200 to 300 days a year. When I was in college, I went to see an improv group, and I said to myself, “I can do that.” And I had never done improv at that point. And I went the next week and I volunteered to be in a sketch, and then they offered me to be in the group. Schelkopf: So, what should people expect from the live show? Because you’re live, is there more pressure on you guys? Proops: Well, we’re big and loud. And we hit the stage running. We’re not shy and retiring. We’re putting on a big show with lots of music. We sing, we jump around. It’s funny. So, there’s that. And also, there’s way more audience interaction than on TV. We have volunteers coming out of the crowd. We’re really an audience show. We’re about what the audience wants to see, and we’re about bringing the audience up and putting them in the show.
I think you’ll find it’s a lot more exciting. Everyone is involved. Everything is based on audience suggestions. Schelkopf: Your weekly podcast, “The Smartest Man in the World,” has been called “some of the boldest comedy on the podcasting frontier.” Did you expect such accolades? Proops: No, I don’t go out looking for the accolades. The podcast is my baby, so I can be as opinionated as I want. And I’m very, very opinionated about politics and feminism and the class war and the rich and all that. It’s a different bag. It’s really worked out for me. It’s been such a labor of love, and it’s just me on my own. My wife and I really put the whole thing on. I get about 60,000 downloads a week, so I do pretty well. Schelkopf: As far as inspiration for your comedy, where do you get it from? Proops: All around me. I’m full of anger. I’m furious with the way the world is going. And there’s plenty in the newspapers and on the Internet to keep me busy. I find inspiration every moment, one in how beautiful people can be. The podcast has struck such a chord with people that I couldn’t be happier about that. And then all the “Who’s Line” people, they all love us. We’re not characters to them. So, I really feel lucky like that, that I get to be myself. I think that people are beautiful and that they have to fight always against what the interests of the rich are. The world does not have to be the way they want it to be. And that’s always my message to everybody.

SPORTS&REC Batavia rallies to sweep series with Geneva By KEVIN DRULEY
Batavia’s Andrew Siegler tags out Geneva’s Jason Croci at second May 13 in Batavia. The Bulldogs claimed a 5-4, eight-inning victory to earn a three-game sweep against the Vikings and improve to 21-3-1 overall and 15-2-1 in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. Geneva falls to 16-11 overall and 12-10 in conference play.
kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Micah Coffey jogged to first base while Reagan McReynolds advanced home May 13, two Batavia baseball teammates combining to cover the last 180 feet of the Bulldogs’ comeback trail. Officially, Coffey’s game-ending walk scored McReynolds to complete a 5-4, eight-inning victory against Geneva and secure an Upstate Eight Conference River Division sweep. Still, Coffey contends the

where we’ve had to fight and scratch and claw for everything that we wanted, so to be able to see our guys compete and fight for a win like that is really important at this stage in the season.” Batavia (21-3-1, 15-2-1 UEC River) strengthened its grip on the conference lead while Geneva bemoaned 10 walks – three intentional – which added up to thwart its bid to avoid a sweep. “That’s a game that we need to have,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said. Moments later, Hahn also played the perspective card on the Vikings (16-11, 12-10). Earlier Tuesday, fifth-seeded Geneva learned it would join Tri-Cities brethren Batavia (No. 1), St. Charles East (No. 2) and St. Charles North (No. 3) as top-ranked teams in the upcoming Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional. “That’s kind of been the way it’s been in the four years we’ve been in the Upstate Eight, is the four of us have kind of been at the top of the sectional,” Hahn said. “It’s got to be one of the better sectionals in the state, you know, top to bottom. We’ll be ready to compete.” The Vikings might have to do so without Florida Statebound sophomore shortstop Nick Derr, who left the game in the sixth after suffering an injury to the fingers on his right throwing hand. Derr’s opposite field triple
three batters into the game scored Jason Croci to give the Vikings an early lead. Ben Chally and Brandon Evert added run-scoring singles later in the inning. Batavia center fielder Laren Eustace helped the Bulldogs start to answer by lining a leadoff homer to right in the bottom half. Coffey’s two-run, opposite field single to left with the bases loaded drew Batavia to within 4-3 in the fifth. McReynolds, the No. 9 hitter, helped turn the order over with one of his three walks on an overcast afternoon. “Today, I really saw the ball,” McReynolds said. “It’s not that bright outside.” Holm felt just as strongly about his vantage point on the play after the Coffey hit off Vikings starter Bret Reed (five innings, three runs allowed), when a relay from left fielder Garrett Davis erased Jeremy Schoessling to end the inning. Holm argued Geneva catcher Nate Montgomery blocked the plate before the throw arrived, but the call stood. Holm eventually was asked to remain in the dugout for the remainder of the game – he did not coach third base after the fifth – but he later likened his motives to “the old Earl Weaver.” That is, arguing to inspire his players. One of the emboldened was junior right-hander Nick Rogalski, who worked around two hit batsmen to earn the victory with three innings of scoreless relief of Evan Acosta. “You know, the funny thing is, people get on. They do not score on him. They just don’t,” Holm said. “And knock on wood – there’s a bunch of wood around here – he’s been incredibly effective.” Geneva reliever Ben Slattery (1 1/3 innings of relief) took the loss.
