By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Tears streamed down Kayla Taylor’s face June 6 after meeting “Dancing With The Stars” champion Maksim Chmerkovskiy during his appearance at Aliano’s Ristorante in downtown Batavia. “He touched my heart,” said the 16-year-old Oswego resident, who is a dancer herself. “He kissed me on the cheek, and he told me to save a dance for him.” Chmerkovskiy won this season’s “Dancing With The Stars” with his dancing partner, Olympic ice dancer, Meryl Davis. Aliano’s was hosting a trunk showing of Chmerkovskiy’s new line of men’s fine jewelry, which he designed himself. Taylor and her mom, Debbie, waited in line for more than three hours for the chance to meet Chmerkovskiy. Even though he arrived at the restaurant later than scheduled after his limousine got stuck in traffic, Taylor was not deterred. •

Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy (center) arrives at Aliano’s in Batavia. “I want to thank him for being an inspiration to me,” she said moments before meeting him. “He needs to know that he is an inspiration to others.” Debbie Taylor also has been a longtime fan of the show and of Chmerkovskiy. He first appeared in season two of “Dancing With The

Stars” and won the championship in the show’s 18th season. “He finally won it, and I am so happy for him,” she said. Stephanie Seydone and her husband, Degauld, also stood in line for more than three hours for chance to meet Chmerkovskiy. “We’re big fans of the show,” she said. “Our favorite

season was this season. I really respect his talents. I think he is very passionate.” Chmerkovskiy expressed his gratitude to those who came out to see him. “This has been an amazing trip,” he said to the crowd of people lined up outside the restaurant. “I had no idea people would show up like this.” That included Christina Carrasco of Oswego and her mom, Arina. “He was as nice as could be,” Christina Carrasco said after meeting him. “He thanked us for waiting as long as we did.” Aliano’s Ristorante owner Mario Aliano said he was glad the event helped to create a buzz and bring more people to downtown Batavia. “It is a great draw for the community,” Aliano said. He also shares a bond with Chmerkovskiy, as he is a GIA certified gemologist and master goldsmith and owns Rossario’s Fine Jewelry in Wood Dale. “I’m just blessed to be able to do something like this,” Aliano said.

FEELING BETTER

THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF VISION LOSS OVER 50 If you’re a middle-aged individual, you should know that “age-related macular degeneration” (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss among those in your age group. While the disease does not cause complete blindness, it does cause a gradual loss of central vision, which is needed to read print, drive, identify faces, and perform other important tasks. This happens as a result of the central portion of the retina (macula) becoming thin and degenerating over time, which is the case with the most common type of AMD, “dry” AMD. In one in ten cases, “wet” AMD leads to much more sudden vision loss due to blood vessel hemorrhaging. Regular comprehensive eye exams can lead to early detection of AMD. P.S. If you look at a special piece of paper with horizontal and vertical lines (Amsler grid) and see any missing or distorted lines, then AMD is a possible cause of the visual problem.

GENEVA – The Illinois Department of Transportation has committed $45 million to the Longmeadow Parkway Bridge, county officials announced June 4. News of the financial boost received a round of applause during the Executive Committee meeting. County Board member Maggie Auger, R-Algonquin, said she was pleased to learn the county was awarded this money and thanked all involved. The Longmeadow project will add about 5.6 miles of road from Route 62 across the Fox River to Huntley Road in the Algonquin, Carpentersville and Lake in the Hills area. Construction on the fourlane bridge could begin as soon as 2015, according to Kane County. Costs are estimated at $120 million. County Board Chairman

Chris Lauzen said he is “delighted” to have met and exceeded his goal of securing an additional $10 million to $15 million of state or federal funding. “Timing was just right in this case,” Lauzen said, noting teamwork also was key. Kane County Transportation Director Carl Schoedel said in a written statement the Longmeadow project has gotten “unprecedented support” from local government bodies. Kane and McHenry counties have passed resolutions supporting the project, as have 10 municipalities, including Algonquin, Barrington Hills, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Hampshire, Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Sleepy Hollow and West Dundee, according to Kane County. The Kane/Kendall Council of Mayors, of which Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke is chair, contributed $5 million of the $45 million, Lauzen said.

Tolls will contribute to future funding. Prices have not yet been set for the tolls, which will be collected with an I-PASS-compatible system in cooperation with the Illinois Tollway, according to Kane County. Drew Frasz, who chairs the Transportation Committee, said the Longmeadow project is the largest active job in Kane County and rivals the Stearns Road project in South Elgin. The Stearns Road Bridge Corridor opened in December 2010 and connected Randall Road in eastern Kane County to James “Pate” Philip State Park in far western DuPage County. The Longmeadow project has completed the Phase I engineering stage, and the county is continuing with land acquisition, said Frasz, R-Elburn. “Things are moving along very well,” he said. asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – With their children and grandchildren nearby, George and Mary Laman of Campton Hills sat next to Gov. Pat Quinn on June 5 as the governor signed a bill inspired by the Lamans’ late daughter into law. George Laman said he has no doubts his daughter is smiling down on the family, proud. “This was something that, even though it was not easy, had to be done,” he said. “We as a family did it.” The Lauren Laman Bill requires all students in Illinois high schools to learn how to use an automatic external defibrillator and administer CPR. Lauren Laman was 18 when she suddenly went into cardiac arrest during drill

“This was something that, even though it was not easy, had to be done. We as a family did it.” George Laman Lauren Laman’s father

team practice at St. Charles North High School in 2008. Although an automatic external defibrillator, or AED, was yards from where she collapsed, it was not used, and paramedics were unable to resuscitate her when they arrived. The Lamans drafted the bill with help from state Rep. Dan Burke, D-Chicago, who filed it in October 2013. Despite people telling George Laman the bill did not

have any chance of success, the right people believed in it, he said, describing the support as “utterly tremendous.” Quinn signed the bill, which amends the Critical Health Problems and Comprehensive Health Education Act, at the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois Convention in Bloomington. George Laman said it was an emotional moment. Keeping their promise to their daughter “means everything to us,” he said, adding he also experienced a feeling of emptiness knowing the price his family paid. “At least we know we will save many lives in her name,” he said. The law takes effect Tuesday, July 1. “Lauren, we love you,” George Laman said. “We will love you forever, from our family.”

HOME AT THE RANGE

Sandy Bressner - sbressner@shawmedia.com

The Range Grill & Tap, previously known as Open Range American Grill, has new garage doors that separate the restaurant’s screened porch from its main dining room.

Under new owners, restaurant boasts new name, menu By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Even though Open Range in Batavia now has a new name, its new management said that regular customers should still expect great food and service. Open Range American Grill, located at 35 N. Water St. in downtown Batavia, in May changed its name to The Range Grill & Tap to reflect a change in ownership. The restaurant had previously been connected to Open Range Southwest Grill, which still operates a restaurant in Sugar Grove. “I wanted it to be mine,” said Jeremy Bertrand of North Aurora, the restaurant’s new co-owner and manager. The restaurant’s co-owner is Rob Piton, who was involved in the restaurant when it was known as Open Range and prior to that, Lodge on the Fox. This is Bertrand’s first venture into the restaurant business. “It’s a great opportunity to use what I know,” he said. Bertrand already has expanded the restaurant’s menu, adding items such as a New York strip filet mignon. “I wanted to give people more options,” he said. Bertrand also has added live entertainment at the restaurant. “I want to have live entertainment every once in a while to spice things up,” he said. The Range also has undergone some physical changes, including the installation of garage doors that separate the restaurant’s screened porch from its main dining room, which will help the restaurant better accommodate private parties, Bertrand said. Those customers who dined at the restaurant when it was known as Open Range American Grill might be familiar with the restaurant’s chef, who now works

at The Range. “I got lucky and inherited him,” Bertrand said. The restaurant’s popular fresh prime burgers served with a variety of toppings are a carry over from the previous menu. “The chef does a phenomenal job with the burgers,” Bertrand said. Bertrand’s favorite burger is The Honky Tonk, which is a fresh prime Angus beef patty topped

with a fried egg, cheese sauce, onion strings, and Applewood smoked bacon on a toasted brioche bun. “It is definitely a meal,” Bertrand said. “You should get your fill. Any of the burgers are unbelievably great.” The Range prides itself on its freshness. “The burgers are never frozen,” Bertrand said. “They are always fresh. We make sure we get new orders every week so we don’t have to freeze anything.” The restaurant also makes its own tortilla chips and smokes its own meat for such entrees as its smoked brisket tacos. “It has a unique flavor,” he said. Other items include ribs, Texas beef

brisket, Maryland crab cakes and stone fired pizza. The Range also does catering. Bertrand said he always is open to suggestions from customers. “I want them to feel comfortable in here,” he said. “I love listening to my customers. I want their experience to be the best experience possible.” The Range, 35 N. Water St., is open from 4 to 11 p.m. Mondays, 11:30 a.m. to midnight Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays. 18 Temperature shifts help

balance Washington wine

D

ramatic temperature swings in the fall mean Ned Morris could show up to work in shorts and a polo and leave wearing jeans and a sweatshirt. The Basel Cellars general manager and winemaker was introduced to the wine through the restaurant industry. As a sommelier, Morris sought out wines with an acidic backbone that could complement meals. The desert of eastern Washington is the ideal location for Morris, who has relished the opportunity to make balanced wines from estate vineyards.

Winemaker spotlight Just like Morris, who adds layers of clothes at night in the fall, the vines at Basel Cellars also undergo a transformation. While the cold might force Morris to add a sweatshirt, the Basel Cellars’ vines are busy losing layers. With daytime highs in the 80s and nighttime lows in the 40s, the vines undergo a dramatic physical change. In the sunshine they are able to ripen and add sugar. But as the temperatures rapidly descend and night falls, the grapes develop a crisp acidic balance. It’s the best of both worlds: wines with New World-style fruit development and Old Worldstyle acidity. “Eastern Washington is so unique,” Morris said. “There is no place like it in the world. The winemakers here have done a great job of embracing our climate and terroir. The wines from Walla Walla show a great sense of place. Our climate is so northern it is on line with Bordeaux. But we get more sun and cooler nights, which is like the Rhone Valley.” Because of his experience in the restaurant industry, where Morris sought to marry food with the perfect wine, Basel Cellars has a balanced portfolio. “The acidity we get from our nighttime temperatures

UNCORKED James Nokes

makes our [wine] more European in style,” Morris said. “Wine should enhance the experience of a meal. My training as a sommelier helps me focus on restraint as a winemaker.”

What to buy • Basel Cellars, Merriment, Walla Walla Valley 2007 ($36): Dark fruit, mocha and espresso notes expertly mingle in this wine. There’s a big mouthfeel that’s held together by a crisp acidity and rocky minerality. This drinks like a special occasion wine at an amazing price. “Merriment represents the best of our vineyards,” Morris said. • Basel Cellars, Claret, Pheasant Run Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley 2009 ($15): This entry-level wine is perfect for a weeknight dinner. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cab franc and syrah has cassis and dark chocolate notes, a velvety mouth feel and a gamey backbone from the syrah. “We want our entry wine to drink like a $40 wine,” Morris said. “We want that kind of value to translate to our whole lineup. We want to blow you away with our quality for the value.”

Wine 101 Basel Cellars is a certified sustainable estate that also is salmon friendly. It’s a certification that ensures the sensitive salmon-breeding grounds in the Pacific Northwest won’t be harmed through farming.

• James Nokes writes a bi-weekly wine column for Shaw Media. He’s been tasting, touring and collecting in the wine world for several years. Contact him at planitkanenews@shawmedia.com.

St. Charles native Brianna Smith teaches English to children at the Helen Doron early learning English school in Austria. Smith will offer Music Lingua summer camps, a program that combines music and foreign language learning for children, in July and August.

Local musician to offer summer language-learning camps for kids By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After living in Europe for four years, Brianna Smith will return to her native St. Charles to share a unique program that combines music and foreign language-learning for children. With a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, the musically inclined Smith will teach Music Lingua – German and Spanish foreign language-learning summer camps – in July and August. Music Lingua is a program that uses music movement, storytelling and art to teach foreign language to children ages 2 to 8 years old (ages up to 10 years old can be considered). “I just think it will be something fun,” Smith said. “When kids are so young, they learn really quickly. People think, ‘Oh it’s too young to learn,’ but I started playing piano when I was 5 years old, and now I still play.” Smith said she fully realized music’s ability to connect to memory when she played piano during a previous summer at the Hunter Club Village apartment community for seniors in St. Charles, where her grandma, who experienced brain damage after having a cardiac arrest, resides. “We were doing these Broadway hits that [my grandma] would have known when she was younger, and right away without even looking at the words, she remembered the lyrics,” Smith said. In addition to Smith’s love of music, she

discovered a passion for languages after living in Vienna, Austria, and Madrid, Spain, where she learned German and Spanish. “Music is one of the best ways to learn other things because it breaks down inhibition and makes it fun to learn,” Smith said, adding that – as a certified instructor – she taught English and music through the Helen Doron early English learning schools in Austria and Madrid. “I did it myself in Austria … so why not try it [in St. Charles] and see if it works, because it worked so well there.” The camps will consist of learning a foreign language through song, vocabulary, visuals, games and crafts. Depending on the level of interest in each language, children will be separated by age, and classes will be coordinated to best fit the schedules of interested participants. The Spanish class theme will be “Under the Sea,” and the German class theme will be “On the Farm.” The location of the class still is being considered. “It depends on how many people sign up,” she said. “See how much interest we can drum up and then go from there if we’re going to rent out a space or if we’re going to do it in my basement or in my backyard [in St. Charles].” If more children sign up, Smith said the MECA music school in South Elgin may be a suitable meeting space. Participants will receive learning materials, books and a CD. For information, camp dates, pricing or to sign up, email Smith at bmusic87@gmail.com or call 630-377-2513.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Jordan Shead anchored two championship relays at the Class 3A girls track and field state meet this past month, winning each by fractions of a second yet hardly leaving doubt. In what has become a rite of St. Charles East springs, Shead stormed down the front stretch to help the Saints capture the 4x800 meter and 4x400 en route to the first team trophy in program history after a third-place finish. A whirlwind season filled with shuffling and lineup permutations ended with the Saints climbing the podium at Eastern Illinois, eager to exhale. All the better for Shead. Along with runners, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year battles sinus troubles stridefor-stride, too. “You are just really fussing and tired and you want to sleep all the time,” Shead said. “You get headaches and a lot of facial pressure and really bad sore throat, and yeah …” Consider it the lone, cringe-worthy attribute of Shead’s performance as a senior. Also consider it history, as she is set to undergo surgery to clear her sinuses Friday, June 13. With her upcoming recovery in mind, Shead recently took to occasional running and biking while visiting family in North Carolina. “Just trying to maintain what I have so it’s not totally all gone,” Shead said. Bed rest aside, Shead aims to be as sharp as possible as she prepares for a college career at Notre Dame. Shead committed to the school in January – choosing the Irish over Dayton, Loyola and Wisconsin – on the heels of a breakthrough junior season in which she took fourth in the 3A 400 while helping the Saints’ 4x400 to a state title.

St. Charles East’s Jordan Shead runs to the finish line May 24 in the Class 3A 4x400-meter relay during the IHSA state track and field finals in Charleston. Shead is the Kane County Chronicle Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year. While she matched the fourth-place finish in the 400 as a senior, her development in the 800 diversified Shead’s skill set while boosting the Saints’ medal hopes. Following coach Tim Wolf’s philosophy to “train outside the box,” she made her 4x800 debut at the 2013 Kane County Meet as the Saints finished in a county record of 9:20.13. An encouraging split and newfound adrenaline in running middle distance inspired Shead in the offseason. “She’s obviously really talented and she’s really fast, so once she started the 800, she was really good at it,” said junior Torree Scull, the lead leg of the 4x800.

Adding the 4x800 and/or 800 to her repertoire also built Shead’s endurance for the 400 later in meets. An extra workload did not affect her wind or sinuses much. Shead tried not to think about them but also knew staying active would help keep any potential problems at bay. The quartet of Scull, sophomore Anastasia Honea, senior Corrin Adams and Shead competed together for the first time in the state prelims. The 4x400 was a different story, as junior twin sisters Allison and Elizabeth Chmelik returned with Shead from the past season’s winning relay. Freshman Casey McNichols filled the spot

left by Britney Williams’ graduation. Shead, a Saints captain, gladly assumed Williams’ leadership void, a role made more difficult by the team’s nearly season-long spate of illnesses and injuries. In the week ahead of the county meet, Wolf said 26 athletes missed at least one practice. “I think I was ready to step up and stuff,” Shead said. “As a captain, I knew that comes with a lot of responsibility. I at least tried to make the younger kids feel comfortable because there’s always lot of nerves, so I’d try to lead by example.” Scull noticed the subtle

style in Shead, admittedly “not an extremely loud, echoing person,” upon entering the program. “She wasn’t ever the runner that was so competitive that you came across as mean,” Scull said. “She was always lighthearted and really friendly, so she was a lot of fun to run with.” Shead looks forward to keeping the momentum going at Notre Dame and is certain her time at East will provide fuel. “It was a really amazing experience, the end of my senior year,” Shead said. “I was just really proud of the whole team and how we were able to get a trophy.”
