Festival goers spin around on the YOYO Windy City Amusements ride during the 2013 Windmill City Festival in Batavia.
Windmill City Festival will kick off July 10 By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Windmill City Festival will offer more fun this month. An extra night of activities has been added to the festival, which will be from Thursday, July 10, to Sunday, July 13. Activities are centered on the Batavia Riverwalk at Houston Street and Island Avenue in downtown Batavia. The festival will open a day earlier, on a Thursday instead of a Friday. “We just wanted to give people an extra day of fun,” said Kari Felkamp, director of marketing and public relations for the Batavia Park District. The Windmill City Festival is organized by the Batavia Park District, Bata•
via Chamber of Commerce and the city of Batavia. The festival will kick off at 6 p.m. July 10, with a Batavia Chamber of Commerce networking mixer. “Hopefully that will bring a big crowd down,” Felkamp said. The festival’s beer garden also will open at 6 p.m. The country band Back Country Roads will play from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. that day. Windmill City Festival will feature new activities, such as Live Band Karaoke, which will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 12. “People can get up and sing with a live band,” Felkamp said. Organizers have brought back the Touch-A-Truck event, where kids of all ages will be able to explore a variety of ve-
hicles from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 12. That day will be chock full of activities, including the popular pet parade, which will be at 10 a.m. Registration will be near the main stage from 9:15 to 9:50 a.m. Prizes will be awarded in such categories as best trick, fastest wagging tail, most spots, longest ears and most unusual pet. Once again, festival-goers can compete in the ice cream contest at 2 p.m. July 13, which will feature a 100-foot gutter filled with hundreds of scoops of ice cream. The contest is sponsored by Foltos Tonsorial Parlor and the Batavia Creamery. In addition, those who come out to the festival can put their golfing skills to the test in the Tour Edge Golf Challenge.
Participants take their shot at chipping a hole-in-one on a floating green in the Depot Pond. The cost is $5 for five shots. The Batavia Teen Center will hold a Power Hour from 5 to 6 p.m. July 12 and from 4 to 5 p.m. July 13, with all proceeds benefiting the teen center. The Windmill Whirl 5k Run will take place at a new time – 7 p.m. Friday, July 11. Registration is $25 a runner before July 10 or $30 on race day. Information and registration is at www.signmeup.com. “I think people can really enjoy an evening race,” Felkamp said. “They can enjoy the festival activities afterwards with their families.” A full schedule of events is available online at www.windmillcityfest.org.

BATAVIA – Student lunch prices in Batavia School District 101 will go up by another 8 cents in the 2014-15 school year. Prices for elementary school and middle school lunches will go up to $2.38 a meal, and prices for high school lunches will increase to $2.68 a meal. The school board approved the increase June 24. Kris Monn, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance, said the increase is needed to comply with the
Healthy, Hunger – Free Kids Act of 2010. The Batavia School District participates in the National School Lunch Program. Districts that have meal prices lower than the amount of reimbursement being received per meal under the National School Lunch Program are required to increase their prices to an equitable level under the legislation, Monn said. The increase is on top of a 10-cent increase the district implemented in January to comply with the act. In addition, Monn said the district is working with its food

BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members are voicing concerns about how the district will handle advertising requests for a new scoreboard for the Rotolo Middle School football field. Advocate Health is donating the LED-lighted scoreboard, valued at $33,000. As part of the donation, Advocate Health would receive the primary ad-
vertising space on the scoreboard for the next 10 years. After the 10-year period has expired, the Batavia Boosters would take over marketing and selling of the advertising space, district officials said. “Who determines what advertising we are going to have?” Batavia School Board Vice President Gregg Hodge asked at the June 24 Batavia School Board meeting. “How do we not show favoritism towards one entity over another?

BATAVIA – Dr. R. Mark Lee has retired from dentistry after seeing his last patient June 10. Lee sold his dental practice at 34 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia, which he first opened in November 1984. “I really enjoyed getting to know my patients,” Lee said. “They would get to know me just like I would get to know them.” Lee, 61, grew up in Batavia. Of his location in the city, he said, “this was a natural spot to open my own office.” Lee said he felt good about the fact that his practice was consistently named as a top dentist in the Chicago area by patients surveyed by the Chicago Consumer Checkbook magazine. Dentistry runs in his family. Lee was a third-generation dentist. Before opening his own practice, he practiced with his father, Robert, and

also taught for two years at his alma mater, the University of Illinois Dental School. He is a 1979 graduate of the school. Lee’s grandfather, Harry Matthews, also was a dentist. Lee also spent three years with the U.S. Navy Dental Corps after graduating from the University of Illinois Dental School. Dr. Chris Szydelko of Downers Grove purchased Lee’s practice. He is a fellow graduate of University of Illinois Dental School, having graduated from there in 2006. Szydelko also shares something else in common with Lee as Szydelko’s father also is a dentist.
“I felt that he had the same values as I did,” Lee said. Lee said it was the right time to retire, adding “after 35 years as a dentist, it just felt right.” Lee isn’t just sitting around in his retirement, however. Lee and his wife, Wendy, will be riding in RAGBRAI this month, a seven-day bicycle ride across Iowa. This will be the couple’s fifth time participating in the event. In the fall, he will be going on a 1,000-mile bicycle ride. “I’m an avid bike rider,” Lee said. “You just feel really good after a nice vigorous ride. It’s not putting a lot of stress on your body.”

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – In a public defender’s office handling thousands of cases each year, paperwork is bound to pile up. But when the storage of the paperwork is bound by rules which could require the files to be kept for years – perhaps even decades – the documents become more than a pile. They become a problem. Burdened by decades of files, Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress said her office has resorted to storing boxes under desks and in rooms which could be used for office supplies or by employees. “If we could get rid of the paperwork, we would have so

It prevents the light entering the eye from being focused correctly on the retina, causing distortion of vision. Vision changes usually begin in the middle to late teenage years, and continue until sometime between the ages of 25 to 40, when they slow down or cease. Initial symptoms include frequent or sudden large increases in nearsightedness or astigmatism. Keratoconus may occur in one or both eyes. Images may appear blurred or distorted, and glare may present a problem. When glasses fail to fully correct vision, hard contacts may be used to provide an optically smooth surface. In some cases, a corneal transplant may be necessary. P.S. In its earliest stages, keratoconus causes slight blurring and distortion of vision and increased sensitivity to glare and light.

much more space,” she said. The crowding was particularly evident when an area identified as a potential training room couldn’t be turned into such because the files it contained had nowhere else to go, she said. Childress started to help reduce the problem when she joined the office in 2011 by ensuring duplicates of court orders, police reports and other documents tied to a case weren’t saved, she said. This summer, the Public Defender’s Office is tackling the issue even further. With help from first-year Northern Illinois University law students, it is beginning the tedious process of identifying files which can be eradicated. “Even weeding them out will be multiple months,” Childress said. Childress introduced the intern program to Kane County Board members at a committee meeting in March, where she provided photographs and numbers to illustrate the “staggering” amount of paperwork tied to her office. By her estimates, she told the committee, nearly 97,000 files need to be eradicated, and the roughly 406,916 pounds – more than 200 tons – of paperwork is not only stored in the Kane County Judicial Center but also in other county buildings. And if her office ever needs to find an old file, good luck. “There’s no order to them,” Childress said, adding it could take weeks to find an older case. Childress hopes to transition to a digital file-keeping system and has gotten cooperation from Kane County Cir-
cuit Clerk Tom Hartwell and the IT department to make it happen, she said. At the start of June, the interns were focused on sorting the records and placing files on shelves labeled “ready to scan” and “ready to shred.” While the Public Defender’s Office handles all sorts of cases – from traffic violations to murders – the interns are working on misdemeanor files, which have specific guidelines for retention, said Vanessa Rogalla, executive assistant to the public defender. Files which meet the secretary of state’s guidelines for disposal will go straight to shred, she said, and files which don’t will be scanned for retention, then shredded. For first-year law students, Childress said, the sorting process is a way for them to learn about different charges and sentencing ranges. The interns already had crowded a potential lunchroom with waist-high, twine-tied bundles of files ready to be shredded within the first few weeks of starting. “They’ve been wonderful,” Rogalla said. When Childress began this project, she said she was afraid she would have to ask the County Board for money to shred the documents. At the March committee meeting, she talked about potentially obtaining an industrial shredder, but she since has received better news. She found a suburban company willing pay the Public Defender’s Office for the paper shredded, she said, but she did not immediately know how much that could amount to.

Batavia yoga teacher featured in new book By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com

atavia yoga teacher Linda Karl believes that yoga can help a person in every part of his or her life. Karl, the founder of Metta Yoga, is one of only two Chicago-area yoga teachers featured in the book “Conversations With Modern Yogis.” Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Karl about the book. Eric Schelkopf: You had your first public OM in 1973 with beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Can you tell me about that? Linda Karl: Well, I was in junior college in Chicago. At the time it was called Southwest College, but now it’s called Richard J. Daley College. Allen Ginsberg came to do a reading of his poem “Howl.” He was a Buddhist, and we all just kind of sat around and chanted. Schelkopf: Was that a life-changing experience? Karl: I don’t know about changing my life. But it was interesting. Allen Ginsberg and his writings were very popular with the counter-culture at that time. After the poetry reading, a bunch of us went out to a party with him. Everybody just kind of sat around and hung on his every word, so to speak. It was pretty cool. Schelkopf: Of course, you are featured in this book, “Conversations With Modern Yogis.” Karl: About three years ago, I got an email from the book’s author, Zubin Schroff, saying that he was interested in interviewing me because of my yoga blog. He wanted to get different voices that are kind of outside of the status quo of yoga, as it’s currently taught. He liked my voice. He’s actually the director of a yoga studio out in California, and what he did was drive cross country to interview everybody in the book. Schelkopf: What did he like about your approach to yoga? Karl: Because I’m not the status quo,
and he said that what I write about needs to be heard. He also called me a “fierce voice in the yoga blogosphere.” Schelkopf: What do you try to do with yoga? How do you think you are different than other yoga teachers? Karl: For one, I teach out of my house. I’ve also been to India eight times, and I study at a particular school in India that was started by the son of the father of modern yoga. The style of yoga I teach is classical, traditional yoga. It’s all about changing your life. So it’s not gym yoga. It’s not just about the physical postures. It’s about becoming healthy and having a clear mind, quieting the mind. I work with trauma survivors, from soldiers to sexual assault and domestic violence survivors. I used to teach at the Mutual Ground domestic violence shelter in Aurora for about 10 years. I believe that all yoga is therapeutic, if it is applied correctly and beneficially. Schelkopf: It sounds like you believe that yoga can touch all areas of one’s life. Karl: Exactly. Schelkopf: How does yoga change a person’s mindset? Karl: Authentic yoga helps you change your view of yourself and your life. I work with people who may have anxiety attacks, or may be depressed for whatever reason. A consistent practice of yoga and breathwork and meditation absolutely changes their lives. They are not as stressed or depressed any more. They can Photo provided handle things a lot better. More information is available at Metta Batavia yoga teacher Linda Karl, the founder of Metta Yoga, is one of only two Chicago-area yoga teachers featured in the book “Conversations With Modern Yogis.” Yoga’s website, www.metta-yoga.com.

Restaurant reviews
In the fading summer light, soft breezes swept across my face as the encapsulating sounds of rustling tree leaves calmed my spirit. I began to relax with ease while nestled into an Adirondack chair situated on a wrap-around porch, where the smell of timber from its refurbished planks was still fresh. This is how my experience at Patten House Restaurant and Bar began. As my mystery dining companion arrived, I hollered from the porch, “Welcome to my humble abode.” Of course I was referring to lumber man George Patten’s stately, multi-level former home, located in Geneva’s historic district. Built in 1857, The Patten House underwent a well-deserved renovation that began in 2013. It opened in June, after being transformed into a multi-dining-room lounge and restaurant, serving New Orleans’ Cajun-style cuisine. A fitting menu, as the structure – from the outside – is reminiscent of an old plantation home while also emanating a lodge-like quality. While at The Patten House, I felt as though I had escaped to another place in a simpler time. Everything has been redone with grace, to a standard of excellence and while keeping true to the home’s historic charm. After a quick, self-guided tour of the home, a necessity upon an inaugural visit (and trust me, you will be coming back), we decided to eat al fresco at one of the restaurant’s two outdoor patios. Appetizers cost between $8 and $14, and entrees cost between $18 and $29. Entrees come with a choice of soup or house salad and garlic cheddar biscuits. We started with the Crab Cakes and Grits ($12), two jumbo lump crab cakes with a side of stone-ground grits soaked in red pepper aioli. Blues Traveler to play as part of ‘Under The Sun Tour’ By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com
F
or almost 30 years, Blues Traveler has been entertaining crowds with its blend of blues rock, folk rock and soul. The band will perform with Sugar Ray and Uncle Kracker on Sunday, July 6, as part of the “Under The Sun Tour” at RiverEdge Park, 360 N. Broadway St., Aurora. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $30, available at RiverEdge’s website, www.riveredgeaurora.com. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Blues
Traveler drummer Brendan Hill, a founding member of the band.
“We’ve kept together because we’re a band of friends, and traveling down this road together.”
Eric Schelkopf: What do you like about being on this tour, with other bands that also enjoyed success in the ’90s? Brendan Hill: We got asked to do the tour back in January or February, and we were really excited to kind of reconnect with some of the bands we played with back in the ’90s as part of the H.O.R.D.E. Festival. The audiences will hopefully get a chance to see what we are all up to now.
Brendan Hill
Schelkopf: Do you think you complement each other’s sound?
Blues Traveler drummer
Hill: I think so. We were all [on] the radio back in the ’90s. There was kind of [a] scene back in the ’90s, so I think we do complement each other. Blues Traveler is bringing the jam band element into this tour. Schelkopf: Of course, you are a founding member. You met John Popper while attending Princeton High School in New Jersey. Originally you were called Blues Band and then you changed your name to Blues Traveler. Was there a reason you changed your name? Hill: We were a high school band. When you are growing up in a small little suburban town, you could be called Blues Band and you could be the only one. But then we moved to New York City, and there were a thousand blues bands. And
right around the time that “Ghostbusters” the movie came out, we just loved the idea that when we jammed on our own, it always felt that there was sort of another entity that we were creating, another force. The four of us made something special and unique. In “Ghostbusters,” there was the character Gozer, also known as “The Traveler,” who could morph and change into anything in that movie. We kind of liked that idea, and Blues Traveler had a nice ring to it. And it proved to be true. We’ve been doing this for almost 30 years, and traveling is our bread and butter. We’ve kept together because we’re a band of friends, and traveling down this road together.

Schelkopf: Your song “RunAround” was a huge radio hit when it was released, and the band won a Grammy Award for it. Did you think the song would connect so well with people, and not only that, also earn the band a Grammy Award? Hill: Of course not. When we were making the album, “Four,” it was when the band really clicked and connected with the producer and we were connecting with each other. It was kind of all the right elements, the right timing, and a lot of luck.

GENEVA – St. Charles North guard Armon Osborne spent most of this past winter anchored toward the end of a deep North Stars bench. If he keeps scoring the way he did the night of June 25, that won’t be the case this season. Osborne, a rising junior guard, showed a knack for scoring in bunches in the championship game of the Geneva Summer League tournament as the North Stars fell to defending Upstate Eight Conference River champion Larkin 53-48. At one point a little more than halfway through the second half, the 5-foot-10 lefthander scored nine straight points for his team, two 3-pointers followed by a threepoint play. “It was a lot of fun,” Osborne said. “I like high-scoring games, putting up points.” Leaning on returning standouts Jake Ludwig and Jack Callaghan and several fresh faces auditioning for larger roles – such as Osborne – North eliminated Aurora Central Catholic, Naperville Central and St. Charles East in the single-elimination event before dropping a close championship game to the Royals. The final three points of Osborne’s flurry gave North a 39-38 lead with 7 minutes to play – there are two, 20-minute running clocks in league games – but the Royals flashed the late-game toughness they’re known for during the winter in fending off the North Stars, who were guided by assistant coach Rob Prentiss in head coach Tom Poulin’s absence. North moved to the championship game with a 58-40 semi-
final win against crosstown foe St. Charles East. The Saints entered the tournament as the only unbeaten team in league play. Saints coach Pat Woods likes what he’s seeing as East, led by senior point guard Cole Gentry, moves on from the graduations of Dom Adduci and AJ Washington, both of whom are preparing to play college ball. “We share the ball so well,” Woods said. “It’s almost like the San Antonio Spurs might be rubbing off on us a little bit. There’s great team chemistry on this group. They’ve been playing together since they’re young, they share the ball well and there’s just unselfishness.” In earlier tournament action, host Geneva eliminated Batavia, pulling away from the Bulldogs in the final minute of a competitive matchup. The Vikings then were ousted in the quarterfinal round by Metea Valley. East’s quarterfinal win was a comfortable one over Wheaton Academy, which, like many teams this time of year, was playing shorthanded. The Warriors did have standout senior Josh Ruggles, former King of the Hill 3-point champion in the state, who is transitioning this offseason from shooting guard to point guard. “I really like a lot of what he’s doing, being the lead guard,” Wheaton Academy coach Pete Froedden said. “He’s distributing, he’s seeing and making decisions. He’s got that kind of IQ to do that. “Ultimately, we’re putting in a new offense this summer, too, so it’s a little bit stagnant, but it’ll obviously get better as we’re able to practice and teach and do those kinds of things.”
