By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Fermilab scientist Adam Lyon was busy snapping pictures July 30 as workers helped move the 50-foot-wide circular electromagnet into place in its new home. “This is exciting,” Lyon said. “This is only the beginning.” The move marked the final trek for the 17-ton magnet, which attracted attention last summer on its 3,200-mile journey from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York to Fermilab. The attention the magnet garnered surprised Fermilab staff. “We didn’t think it was going to have that sort of rockstar quality,” Lyon said. The magnet is the centerpiece of Fermilab’s new Muon g-2 experiment, which will
“We want to very precisely study the properties of muons. How much muons wobble depends on what is happening around them. Perhaps we will discover new particles that are affecting muons. ” Adam Lyon

study the properties of elusive subatomic particles called muons. The ring was built at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the 1990s for a similar experiment, one which found hints of new physics beyond what scientists have observed. A muon is a negatively charged particle, similar to an electron, but about 200 times heavier. Muons fall into the class of particles known as leptons. Fermilab will conduct a similar experiment with the most powerful beam of muons in the world. Lyon is in charge
of the computing and software for the Muon g-2 experiment. “We want to very precisely study the properties of muons,” Lyon said. “How much muons wobble depends on what is happening around them.” Scientists think that this deviation might be due to the presence of heavy, undiscovered particles or hidden subatomic forces. “Perhaps we will discover new particles that are affecting muons,” Lyon said. Through the experiment, scientists hope to discover more about muons.
“We are not really sure what purpose muons have in the universe,” Lyon said. “We don’t think anything is made out of muons.” The experiment is expected to start taking data in late 2016 or early 2017, Lyon said. “There is still a lot of work to do,” he said. Mike McEvoy of St. Charles, a graduate student at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, also has been working on the experiment. McEvoy said he envisions the experiment will lead to other experiments and a better understanding of physics.
Fermilab research associate Mandy Rominsky said the Muon g-2 experiment “represents a step forward in Fermilab’s future.” Fermilab has made its share of discoveries over the years. In 1995, physicists at Fermilab announced the discovery of the top quark. The discovery was made through Fermilab’s Tevatron accelerator, which shut down in 2011. The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle observed in nature. Quarks are one of the fundamental building blocks of matter in the universe. “Fermilab is alive and kicking,” she said.

Proposed industrial park receives opposition from residents By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Residents crowded the Batavia City Council chambers on July 29

to show their opposition to the proposed rezoning of land at Kirk Road and Wind Energy Pass on the city’s east side for an industrial park. “It will change and degrade
the character of Batavia from a neighborhood feel to an industrial feel,” said resident Dan Pepin, in addressing aldermen at the July 29 Joint Committee of the Whole meeting. Pepin
is a member of a group called Keep Batavia Neighborhoods, which is opposed to the proposed industrial park. Batavia aldermen plan to discuss the proposed develop-
ment at a Tuesday, Aug. 19, Joint Committee of the Whole meeting. Plan commissioners in April voted 4-3 to recommend amending the city’s comprehensive plan and zoning map to allow for an industrial park on land along Kirk Road originally proposed for town houses. The 56-acre property, known as Prairie Commons, is on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass. City officials in 2005 annexed the property. The development originally proposed for the property included residential zoning on the eastern 36 acres, with 242 town houses proposed. The western 20 acres was to be zoned general commercial. Skokie-based The Missner Group now proposes to build two large industrial buildings on the entire 56-acre property. Keep Batavia Neighborhoods has started a website, www.keepbatavianeighborhoods.com, and has posted signs along Kirk Road in opposition to the proposal. Among other issues, the group is concerned about the additional truck traffic the proposed industrial park would generate and its impact on the surrounding area, including Kirk Road. “Kirk Road has become overcrowded and dangerous again,” said Chris Virelli, another member of Keep Batavia Neighborhoods. “Please consider the ramifications of your decisions.” Keep Batavia Neighborhoods member Dennis Merritt has made an offer to purchase the Prairie Commons property. Merritt has been in the real estate business for 30 years. His proposal calls for 242 town houses to be built on the land, which is what originally was proposed. “There is another offer on the table,” Merritt told aldermen.

Color vision deficiency (“color blindness”), an inherited trait, is much more common among boys than it is among girls since the red and green pigment genes involved in color vision are located on the X chromosome. Beyond that, recent research also reveals that color vision deficiency afflicts Caucasian boys at three times the rate of African-American boys. Among children between the ages of 37 and 72 months, 5.6% of Caucasian boys were “color blind” compared with 1.6% of African-American boys. In the same age group, Asian boys had the second highest percentage (3.1%), followed by Hispanic boys (2.6%). The overall prevalence of color vision deficiency is about 2% (59 boys and 4 girls out of the 4,005 children tested). P.S. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that vision screening for color vision deficiency begin at three years of age.

BATAVIA – Gaetano’s Batavia is preparing for business downtown. The upscale, Italian fusion restaurant at 15 E. Wilson St. was scheduled to open Aug. 5 in the former space of The Rhino Room. In January, aldermen approved a $25,000 tax increment financing district grant and a $75,000 60-month loan for owners Gaetano and Wendy DiBenedetto, who live in Batavia. The couple sought the funds because they expected improvements and equipment installation at the space to exceed $220,000. The loan carries an annual interest rate of 2.75 percent. The couple also owns a Gaetano’s restaurant in Forest Park. Gaetano’s has been rated as one of the best Italian restaurants in the Chicago area. According to Gaetano’s website, executive chef Gaetano Di Benedetto is a native of the coastal town of Bagheria, located just outside of Palermo, Sicily. He is a teacher of culinary art in both Italian culinary colleges and colleges here in the United States. The Rhino Room closed last year. It had opened in early 2012 in the building at the corner of Wilson Street and North River Street that previously housed Limestone Coffee & Tea. In March 2013, Limestone reopened at its new location at 8 W. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia, in the former home of Lane Allen Architects.

If Foster agrees to Senger’s terms, two debates would be held in DuPage County and two in Will County. The general election will take place in November.

State Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville, the Republican candidate for Illinois’ 11th Congressional District seat, has challenged the Democratic incumbent, Bill Foster, for the 11th District to a series of four debates in September. Senger said in a press release voters in the district should be able to compare the candidates’ records on the crucial issues facing the country. She listed job growth and fiscal issues within government as probable topics for debate in the release, and she highlighted several honors awarded to her by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business. The Republican candidate accused Foster of being “unwilling to agree to a debate,” according to the release. In an emailed statement, Senger wrote, “Foster seems to be content to hide in the shadows and hope voters don’t notice he is missing in action.” Foster’s campaign manager, Craig Belden, wrote in an emailed statement this was the first time Senger’s office had requested a debate and called allegations implying Foster’s refusal to debate “absolutely false.”

RED HOT CELEBRATION
Bulldog’s Red Hots in Batavia is celebrating its five-year anniversary this month. The North Island Sandwich Shoppe, which Bulldog’s owners Allen and Christina Soboj opened in 2011, is located next door.
Batavia restaurants still setting themselves apart from the rest By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Bulldog’s Red Hots owner Allen Soboj knows there are plenty of places in the area for people to grab a cold sandwich, burger or slice of pizza. So what Soboj and his wife, Christina, try to do with Bulldog’s and their adjacent business, North Island Sandwich Shoppe, is to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack. “We don’t try to compete with Subway,” Soboj said. Soboj runs Bulldog’s, located at 32 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia, and his wife owns and operates North Island Sandwich Shoppe. Bulldog’s opened in 2009 and is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month. North Island Sandwich Shoppe opened in 2011. One way North Island Sandwich Shoppe tries to set itself apart is through the meats on its deli sandwiches. It serves Boar’s Head luncheon meats. Soboj said he first was introduced to Boar’s Head by a Bulldog’s employee before North Island Sandwich Shoppe opened. He was instantly sold. “One bite was all it took,” he said. “I hate luncheon meat, but I will eat this stuff. It is all gluten free and is also approved by the American Heart Association.” North Aurora resident Peter Scholten was at the North Island Sandwich Shoppe recently picking up a chicken salad sandwich for his wife, Judi. “She is on a dairy-free, gluten-free diet,” Scholten said.
“Most fast-food places are not providing gluten-free options.” Scholten is a regular customer at Bulldog’s and North Island Sandwich Shoppe. “They are not stingy on putting stuff in your sandwich,” he said. “They are reasonably priced.” North Island Sandwich Shoppe also started serving pizza more than a year ago after a Pizza Hut restaurant closed a couple of doors down from the shop. “We get a lot of compliments on our pizza,” Soboj said. “We are the only pizzeria that uses Grande cheese. It’s the best mozzarella cheese you can buy. It’s in a class all by itself.” North Island Sandwich Shoppe also boasts a number of desserts made by Soboj’s wife, including marshmallow treats, lemon bars and cookies. Gluten-free cookies also are available. Bulldog’s Red Hots menu also provides plenty of options, including homemade Italian beef, grilled chicken breast, hot dogs and burgers. To celebrate its five-year anniversary, the restaurant will sell 99-cent hot dogs from Friday, Aug. 22, to Sunday, Aug. 24. The name Bulldog’s comes from the mascot name for the Batavia High School athletic teams. The restaurant also is community-minded and supports local teams in various ways.

BELOW: Tiffany Rodriguez makes a deli sandwich at the Batavia restaurant. Bulldog’s sells burgers, seafood, ribs and pizza. “We’re also at all the local festivals,” Soboj said. “You try to be as visible as humanly possible.” While Bulldog’s and North Island Sandwich Shoppe continue to gain customers, Soboj admitted that it’s been a struggle. “The first year was very challenging,” he said. “We didn’t know if we would make it the first year. For the first year, I didn’t take a paycheck.” But that hard work has paid off. “I still work 75 hours a week, but the store is finally on the map now,” Soboj said. “We are well known in Batavia.” For information about Bulldog’s Red Hots and North Island Sandwich Shoppe, visit www. bulldogsredhots.com.

Winemaker spotlight There is a perfect storm of ecological events at Daou Vineyards. While downtown Paso Robles routinely racks up 100-degree summer days, high elevation allows Daou to stay cool. The vineyard is above the fog and frost lines. In springtime the fruit is safe from any damage, and in the summer it can fully ripen under the intense aspect ratio. Even with fewer hot days, Daou is usually the first to harvest in Paso Robles because the vineyards receive plenty of photosynthesis from the aspect

ratio. With fewer 100-degree days the vines don’t shut down as often. For 14 hours they get intense sunlight and a cool breeze because they are just 13 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. “The elevation is fantastic for temperature,” winemaker Daniel Daou said. “At 96 degrees vines go into survival mode and shut down and stop producing sugar,” Daou said. “Last summer only five days on the mountain reached 100 degrees, while downtown they routinely reach 100 degrees.” With 100 percent calcarous clay soil, a vibrant minerality is present in the entire portfolio of Daou wines. Daou never presses fruit because he said he favors the “silky, gentle wellintegrated tannins” of free run juice. “Making wine from fruit grown in our soil is a pleasure,” said Daou, who has used the only To Kalon and Clone 338 cabernet sauvignon clones in Paso Robles because of the low yields and intense fruit they provide.

Proprietors Georges Daou (left) and Daniel Daou are pictured at Daou good-natured ribbing by his French colleagues on a recent Vineyard in Paso Robles, California. “They are unadulterated wines that are a pleasure to make. Paso Robles doesn’t get as much water as Napa or Sonoma, but at high elevation when fronts come in off the Pacific they dump rain on us. Downtown Paso got four inches of rain last year. We got 16 inches. In a normal year we don’t have to irrigate until August. In a wet year we only dry farm. The moisture is there, and the roots can go down and find it. “It snows here in the winter.
Come here in February or March and you think you are in Aspen. It is beautiful. That’s what makes our terroir so unique you might be able to clone a view or a label in the wine industry or use the same clone someone else uses. But the climate, soil and calcareous limestone soil here can’t be cloned.”

An intense afternoon sun draped the resplendent Daou Vineyards and Winery in shadows as a cool breeze refreshed patrons passing through the elegant courtyard and tasting room. At 2,200 feet, Daou is the highest vineyard in Paso Robles, California. The stateof-the-art winery, tasting room and magnificent rotunda sit atop row after row of vines at a steep 40 degree incline. Stunned by the vista that looked like a painting, I was further impressed by the elegant elevation wines and prowess of winemaker Daniel Daou.

College runners return for 5k By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Mike Bianchina and Andrew Nelson traversed the same Geneva streets and track on which they trained and competed as former Vikings. Meaghan Ciochon and Kaitlin Frei, recent graduates of a less colloquial kind, experienced the terrain and atmosphere of the Fox River Trail Runners Summer Sunset 5k for the first time. However runners heard about the finish line they eventually crossed July 30, they all had motives for getting there. Moments after taking the overall title in 15:32, the 19-year-old Bianchina called the night “a little rust buster” as he prepares for his sophomore cross country and track seasons at Bradley. In one way or another, didn’t that phrase apply to each of the approximately 500 athletes who participated in the
5k and preceding youth mile, junior jog and toddler trot? “I did this race going into my sophomore year of high school, and I remember it was really hard. It was like, ‘Oh, this is awful,’ “ Bianchina said. “Now that I’ve trained more in college, I’ve grown to like it a lot more and am taking it more seriously, doing all the right stuff and eating well and all that stuff that really helps that no one really knows about.” Nelson, 23, certainly can attest. After completing his collegiate running career at Syracuse last year, he returned home and has been studying with a chiropractor and nutritionist while serving as a Vikings assistant coach. Twenty-three seconds off Bianchina’s pace, he told the winner, “Way to be, brother,” after finishing second and bolted for the other side of the Burgess Field track. There, several familiar faces, including Vikings girls track coach and cross country assistant
Peter Raak, were harnessing their final kicks. The course weaved through the Gray Street neighborhood around Burgess before the final 300 meters unfolded on the track. Raak finished seventh in 17:42, 44 seconds ahead of a male counterpart, whose very registration tactic illustrated the upbeat spirit of the night. A 44-year-old Geneva man listed as Yoda Jedimaster took 13th in 18:36. “Star Wars” enthusiasts surely would applaud, if only after reporting that Yoda really hails from Dagobah and died around age 900. The top two female finishers, Ciochon, 22, and Frei, 18, came from slightly closer than a galaxy far, far away. Ciobhan (18:44), who graduated from Judson University in May, lives in her native Elgin and heard about the race through a friend who works at Geneva Running Outfitters. Frei (18:47), a recent New Trier graduate from Winnet-
ka, credited Google for informing her of the race. A cross country and track recruit at Notre Dame, she felt urgency to follow her coach’s request to compete in a summer 5k before coming to South Bend. Frei took to the Internet, and the Summer Sunset suited her. “Very nice course,” she said. “This was fun.” Ciochon ultimately agreed, although she was at first uncertain of the route when she arrived about 90 minutes before the race’s 7:15 p.m. start time. Luckily, she had pacers to help her along, as well as her husband. Tim Ciochon doubled as his wife’s cross country coach for her final season at Judson. They were married about 18 months ago, before he was appointed to the position. They met as Judson athletes. On Wednesday, the pair ran close by before Tim Ciochon – 10th overall in 18:30 – pulled away in the final stretch at his wife’s behest.
“I just told him to go,” Meaghan Ciochon said. “He had a little more left than I did.” The youth mile also proved to be a family affair, with the 11-and-over division producing the closest calls. Champion Jaden Ahern of Geneva finished in 6:50, edging brothers Ethan Hipp (6:53) and Lucas Hipp (7:07), also of Geneva. Lucas Hipp acknowledged times are “usually pretty competitive” between he and his older brother, respective sixth- and seventh-graders at Geneva Middle School North. Bianchina and Nelson are a few more years apart but still enjoy sporadic workout runs together. While the Summer Sunset included chip timing, music and the witticism of race announcer Todd Busteed, most elements of the July 30 night still felt recreational. “Andrew’s a great guy. I love racing with him, and I love training with him,” Bianchina said. “He’s always a good training partner to have.”
