eschelkopf@shawmedia.com As Batavia resident Todd Kirk sucked on an e-cigarette while sitting at Black Forest Vapor in Batavia recently, a stream of water vapor emitted from it. Kirk is part of a growing number of people who are turning to e-cigarettes. About 6 percent of all adults have tried e-cigarettes, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, with estimates nearly doubling from 2010. E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that vaporize nicotine. E-cigarettes were created in China and first sold in 2003. Those who use e-cigarettes “vape” rather than smoke. Vaping utilizes a propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin-based liquid, mixed with small amounts of nicotine and food-grade flavoring that then get vaporized in a small, battery-powered atomizer and is
designed to simulate the experience of smoking. Kirk, 43, said he turned to e-cigarettes after he quit smoking more than a year ago. “I come from a long line of smokers,” Kirk said. “I didn’t want to be a smoker anymore.” Since he has switched to e-cigarettes, Kirk said he feels healthier, ticking off several ways his health has improved. “My lung capacity is stronger,” Kirk said. “I started sleeping better. My sinuses aren’t dried out. My teeth are whiter than they used to be.” The verdict is still out, however, on the health impacts of e-cigarettes. Centers of Disease Control officials said although e-cigarettes appear to have far fewer of the toxins found in smoke compared to traditional cigarettes, the impact of e-cigarettes on longterm health must be studied. They said research is needed to assess how e-cigarette marketing could affect initiation
and use of traditional cigarettes, particularly among young people. “If large numbers of adult smokers become users of both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes – rather than using e-cigarettes to quit cigarettes completely – the net public health effect could be quite negative,” Dr. Tim McAfee, director of the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health, said in a statement. The increasing popularity of vaping has presented new challenges to restaurant and bar owners. The Smoke-free Illinois Act, which took effect Jan. 1, 2008, prohibits smoking in virtually all public places and workplaces. “We kind of don’t say anything unless people complain,” said Bob Karas, the owner and general manager of several restaurants in the area, including Rookies Sports Pub & Grill in St. Charles. “We so far haven’t had many people use these in
the restaurant portion of our establishments. At the bar, we do see it every once in a while.” He noted that Chicago recently banned vaping in indoor public places. “We would be happy to see a clear-cut rule on this to minimize confusion,” Karas said. “It’s hard for restaurants to draw lines and make rules and then risk losing customers.” In April, the federal Food and Drug Administration proposed treating e-cigarettes as tobacco products with rules such as a ban on sales to those under 18 and warning labels. The American Medical Association also has urged a ban on kid-appealing flavors and other moves to keep e-cigarettes out of young hands. Black Forest Vapor owner Jason Wilson said his store doesn’t sell its products to minors. In Illinois, it is illegal for minors under the age of 18 to buy tobacco products.
“You have to be 18 and older to vape,” Wilson said. “A customer has to provide identification, and we do card hard.” He said business has been brisk since opening the store in February at the intersection of Kirk Road and Wind Energy Pass in Batavia. Along with selling a variety of different flavors, Black Forest Vapor also sells customized equipment. Wilson said he can’t say whether vaping is a healthier alternative. “But most people in the vaping community can see the health benefits and financial benefits,” he said. “Ten milliliters of liquid costs $10, [and the amount of liquid] is the equivalent of 4 1/2 packs of cigarettes.” Wilson said he opened the shop so he could help people stop smoking. “I have probably helped about 200 people stop smoking since opening,” Wilson said.

September Allium Bulb Reminder: It’s Time for Gardeners to Plant these Spring Beauties!
BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen at the Sept. 9 Joint Committee of the Whole meeting recommended giving Batavia Enterprises a 120-day extension of the redevelopment agreement for the proposed new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia as the company works out a lease agreement with Walgreens corporate officials. “It should give us enough time to get everything done,” Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey told aldermen. “God willing, it will be much sooner than that.” Aldermen recommended an extension of both the redevelopment agreement and the real estate transfer agreement, which is part of the redevelopment agreement. Batavia Enterprises needs the extension because it is trying to get its lease and financing finalized for the Walgreens project. “It’s a complicated site, and it’s a complicated deal,” Dempsey said. “We are very close. We don’t have a signed lease yet.” Depending on weather conditions, Dempsey said the new Walgreens store could open by October 2015 if the project starts this year. Batavia Enterprises wants to move
Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center. Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke voiced his support for the extension. “They have done everything possible to make this work,” Schielke said. “They are totally committed to this. They are really trying to get this done as soon as they can.” In an 8-4 vote, Batavia aldermen in February approved a redevelopment agreement for the project. The project is in a tax increment financing district. Under the proposal, Batavia Enterprises would receive $450,000 from the city as the project moves forward, and another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF money to cover it. Total project costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated to reach about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of about $520,250. Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members on Sept. 2 unanimously approved a new threeyear contract with the Batavia Education Association, the union that represents Batavia School District 101’s teachers. As part of the agreement, Batavia teachers will receive a 3.72 percent salary increase in the first year of the contract and projected increases of 2.25 percent in the second year and a 1.6 percent increase in the third year based on the consumer index, Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn said. “We are pleased to have a three-year agreement with the BEA that reaffirms our commitment to collaboration with our teaching staff to provide outstanding educational service for Batavia,” Monn said in a press release. Monn was the chief negotiator for the Batavia School Board. The district also will see a decrease in total salary costs with the replacement of the seven teachers that retired from the district at the end of 2013-14. The total compensation package for the BEA is projected to increase by 2.2 percent in 2014-15. Other highlights of the new agreement include the formalization of the district insur-
ance committee to monitor the district’s self-insured benefits plan, as well as strengthening district collaborative committee structures. The collaborative committees, which include the Curriculum and Assessment Advisory Council and the Professional Learning Advisory Council, are charged with ensuring that the district’s educational services are research-based and targeted at improving student achievement. Also included is the Student Services Committee, designed to enhance the voice of the professional staff who work with the district’s special-education students. “In strengthening the Curriculum and Professional Learning Advisory Councils within our contract, we recognize the importance of having teacher voice be a central part of the district’s long-range plan for developing and maintaining a strong, viable curriculum and providing the professional development opportunities needed to implement that curriculum,” Amy Biancheri, acting president of the BEA, said in the release. “And in refocusing the Student Services Committee to be more centered on special education needs, it ensures that we are also providing the best education for all of our students.”

Cadence Health Foundation gives millions to Delnor and Central DuPage hospitals GENEVA – The Cadence Health Foundation announced last month that it is funding more than $3.1 million in new equipment, system upgrades and expansion projects at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield and Delnor Hospital in Geneva. The foundation has partnered with individuals and corporations to raise the funding to enhance the offerings and services of Cadence Health. “Without the generosity of thousands of donors each and every year, we would not be in this fortunate position to be able to support a variety of vital projects at Central
for Cadence Health Neurosciences In addition to $3.1 million in funding for the system’s two hospitals, the foundation also supports a variety of other projects, including the Ronald McDonald House near CDH. The facility, which is scheduled to open Feb. 14, will be the first Ronald McDonald House in Chicago’s
western suburbs. The house will feature approximately 12 private bedrooms and bathrooms, along with a communal living room, kitchen, dining room, recreational spaces and laundry facilities. For information about Cadence Health Foundation, visit www.cadencehealth.org/ giving.
SEEING IN 3D
Over the past few years, film and television producers have made movies and television content more widely available in 3D. While this effort to bring three-dimensional programming to large and small screens is largely designed to attract young viewers, some children and young adults seem to be experiencing problems watching 3D shows. If so, it may be indicative of a problem with their binocular vision, which requires that both eyes function in a coordinated manner as they converge, focus, and track the 3D image. Thus, in some respects, watching 3D movies and programming serves as a screening tool much in the same way that eye specialists assess binocular vision during a comprehensive eye exam. P.S. Symptoms that may be indicative of a potential problem viewing images in 3D can include headaches, blurred vision, nausea, and dizziness.

Each month, Belen Hood said she is meeting more and more families who are signing up to receive food from the food pantry at The Salvation Army Tri-City Corps in St. Charles. Hood has run the pantry since November, and she said the number of families served by the pantry is continuing to grow. She has signed up as many as four in a day. Financial challenges over the past several years have led to increases in people served at pantries everywhere, and Maj. John Miller, commander of the St. Charles-based organization, said The Salvation Army is finding it a challenge to keep its shelves stocked. Hood said the organization has seen a 37 percent increase this year. She said some clients have told her that cuts in food stamps have taken a toll. She said The Salvation Army

“They might have lost their jobs six months to a year ago,” Taylor said. “People have pride.” She said people ultimately will come to the pantry when necessary, where perhaps they might not have a decade ago. She said there is more of an understanding of the need, adding that “the people who were giving the can of beans three years ago are now in the line for the can of beans today.” “In society, people are not passing judgment like they would have 10 years ago,” Taylor said. Taylor said she isn’t seeing a huge shortage because “my community is stepping up, absolutely.” She said the summer has been “spectacular” for gardens, and people are donating their garden produce to the pantry. She said farmers have donated from their own gardens. Erik Jacobsen, communications manager at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, said the food bank and food pantries are striving to meet a growing need. He cited a study from Hunger in America 2014 in which the food bank learned it is serving 71,000 people each week in the 13 counties it serves. He said in the last fiscal year, the pantry served 50 million meals, the most ever. He said a recent strategic plan calls for the NIFB to have 75 million meals served by 2020. “It’s still not enough,” he said. Hood said she has had to cut back on meat products, instead adding more vegetable and pasta items. She also has welcomed donations. For instance, the St. Charles Moose Lodge recently donated an amount of food that filled an entire vehicle, she said. Then, the organization donated $450 in Aldi gift cards. Hood said the average client will take away two bags of groceries, some meat and toilet paper, “but that’s not going to last them the rest of the month.” Megan Selck, the vice president and chief development officer for Naperville-based Loaves and Fishes, said that organization has seen some visitors from the Kane County area as well. She said demand is growing. She said the organization will always “err on the side of generosity.” She said educational pro-
Army’s kettle campaign during Christmas time now will become even more important. “The kettle becomes huge,” Hood said. “My clients are always grateful. It’s humbling. … They always ask how they can repay. I encourage them to come out and ring bells for us. If you have a few hours, give us a few hours of ringing bells. That money is so vital to us throughout our whole year.”

grams can have a significant impact. As far as adding meat products, she said the organization has partnered with grocers on food that might be nearing expiration. She said the Loaves and Fishes group is large enough that those in the organization are able to get such products out quickly. Hood said those who receive help often ask how they can help. St. Charles’ Steel Beam Theatre opens season Friday ‘Almost, Maine’ to kick off nonprofit theater’s 14th season By ERIC SCHELKOPF
eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Steel Beam Theatre in St. Charles will open its 14th season Friday, Sept. 12, with the production “Almost, Maine,” a play that explores love and loss in a mythical town called Almost, Maine. Kane County reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Steel Beam founder and artistic director Donna Steele about the new season. Eric Schelkopf: This is your 14th season. Did you ever imagine that you would be here 14 years? Donna Steele: I guess I was hopeful, and we’re still here, which is a wonderful thing. Schelkopf: What did you want to create when you started Steel Beam Theatre? Steele: We wanted to create an arts environment and bring live theater to the community. At the time, we didn’t have a theater in town. We wanted to bring live entertainment and educational programs for children, high quality theatrical entertainment at an affordable price. We tried to select shows that would fit the demographic and please our audiences. We know we can’t please everyone, but we really try to pick a variety of things that will be satisfying not only to the artist, but also to the audience. And I think we’ve done a pretty good job with that, because our attendance is generally over 50 percent, which is really great in the arts. Most arts groups figure that if you are selling half of your tickets, then you are doing pretty well. We’re not completely sold out every night. That would be a wonderful goal. Schelkopf: As far as this season, what were you striving to do? Steele: That becomes more difficult every year, to figure out what fits on our stage and to look at what we have not

already done that is on our bucket list. This year, and the last several years, I think our bent has sort of steered toward the lighter fare, toward more comedy. I think the economy has dictated that people want to escape. They want to laugh. So we’re doing gentle works, I would say. I would say that this season is quite family-friendly, starting with a romantic comedy and then “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” and the one-man show “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol.”
“Veronica’s Room” is our murder mystery. Everybody loves a murder mystery, especially in January, we’ve found. “Ordinary Days is an upbeat, contemporary musical. “The Big Meal” is a pretty exquisite piece of theater, as well, that is about generations. And we’re hoping to do “God of Carnage,” but we have not secured the rights to that as yet. Pretty soon we will know if we’re doing that or not. We just try to pick things that we think people will enjoy. Schelkopf: And how do you think this season compares to past seasons? Steele: Well, I think we’re maintaining our integrity by choosing quality works. It’s a nice blend of thought-provoking and entertaining productions.
More information For additional details about Steel Beam Theatre’s production of “Almost, Maine,” see Page 18. Schelkopf: Along with your regular season, you also will once again present your 3-D haunted house, Kane County Scaregrounds, at the Kane County Fairgrounds in October. The proceeds will benefit you because Steel Beam is a nonprofit organization. Do you do that as an outreach to the community? Steele: We do feel like we are reaching a larger audience, certainly a younger audience, a younger demographic. It’s a very theatrical experience. The actors are really trained and, of course, there’s the 3-D artistry. We think it is a theatrically designed experience. Choosing which barbecue sauce to go with your smoked meats is a daunting task, so we ordered all of them at no additional charge. ST. CHARLES – After one bite of the Brunswick Stew, I knew I would be coming back to The River House Barbecue in downtown St. Charles. A traditional dish hailing from the American South, the rich and thick stew consisted of chicken, brisket and corn, and ever-so-slightly tickled the tongue with a kick of spice. A perfect start to a meal featuring slow- and low-cooked barbecue and southern favorites such as collard greens, beef brisket and sweet potato mash. The restaurant and bar is located east of the Fox River and set up shop where the Thirsty Fox Pub used to be. As a resident, I am elated that the city has acquired an affordable barbecue restaurant that continues to expand the horizons of the city’s main street dining scene. Hopefully, River House’s inception will continue to inspire the flourishing of unique dining concepts entering the downtown area. The restaurant hasn’t yet had it’s grand opening, which is probably why on a Monday for lunch, it was pretty empty. But don’t let that deter you from visiting. We took a seat near the window that offers views of the Arcada Theater and the surrounding downtown – a perfect nook for people watching. Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly, checked on us often and offered recommendations to us first-timers. After a round of waters served in Mason jars hit the table, my dining companion and I ordered a cup of the stew ($6.99) to share. We originally intended on ordering the recommended Jalapeño Bombs ($8.99) but they spend a substantial amount of time in the smoker, and wouldn’t be ready in time. So, we ordered the Smokehouse Buttermilk Onion Rings ($6.95) instead. The onion rings, which are seasoned in the house rub, come with a side of

Second City celebrates 55 years of comedy By ERIC SCHELKOPF
of learn how everyone fits together and how that translates to the stage as well.
Over the years, Chicago’s The Second City comedy school has launched the careers of many top comedians, including the likes of Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Bill Murray. The Second City’s 55th Anniversary Tour on Saturday, Sept. 13, will come to the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, 1201 Main St., Batavia. Tickets for the show are $19.50 Alan Linic to $31.50 and can be purchased at www. bataviafineartscentre.org or by calling 630-937-8930. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Alan Linic, a member of The Second City Touring Company, about the upcoming show.
Schelkopf: It seems like so many great comedians have come out of Second City. Why do you think it is such a breeding ground for comedians? Linic: One of the things that Second City is known for and has always been known for is it’s satirical angle. I think that coupled with the improvisational aspect is extremely attractive. And it helps that there already is a community there when you arrive, because Second City has been around for 55 years at this point. So by the time you get there and you discover that there are all these other like-minded people who have the same sensibilities as you and are so talented, it’s like finding a place that you fit in, more than anything else.
eschelkopf@shawmedia.com
Eric Schelkopf: Is it an honor for you just to be part of this tour? Alan Linic: Oh, yeah, absolutely. I had seen Second City shows when I was in college, and it really changed me and kind of altered my goals. To do this now, as I have seen people before me do it, is just such a dream come true.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Second City’s Schelkopf: So, for people who come out to 55th Anniversary Tour will come to the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, 1201 Main St., Batavia. the show, what should they expect? I probably would be doing even if I had never seen a Second City show, or known that was a career option.
Schelkopf: What have you learned being a member of The Second City Touring Company? Linic: There are so many skills that I think you pick up. And probably the most important of them is this idea of sharing space and focus with people. We’re on the road all the time in an Schelkopf: How has being in Second City enclosed space, in a van, in a plane, in changed you? Linic: There’s something almost com- a car and a bus, what have you. Linic: The 55th Anniversary Tour is a sort of celebration of past and present for The Second City. So it features a lot of the sketches that were written by so many famous Second City alumni, like Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert. We’ll be performing on the stage scenes that were written by people who came before us, sort of celebrating that history of Second City. Schelkopf: And I understand your fiancee, Claire Meyer, is also in Second City. Linic: Yes, she performs with The Second City Training Center ensemble.
Schelkopf: Because I guess one thing that has probably put the two of you in the spotlight is your Twitter handle, @WeFoughtAbout, where you document all of the arguments you have had. How did that come about? What made you want to do it? Linic: It sort of happened by itself, almost. We had an argument last year, and I remember saying after we resolved the fight, “If we posted this somewhere, nobody would believe that we just had a shouting match about this.” And the next day, we were thinking about that some more, and we were like, why don’t we start posting these things and see what happens and kind of help us keep a chronicle of the dumb things that we argue about that we probably shouldn’t be fighting over. So we did. And it’s been going ever since. Schelkopf: Do you think it has helped people to realize how trivial some of their own arguments are? Linic: I think it has been fairly polarizing. I think we’ve gotten as many people say, “Oh, I had thought about this too,” or, “Oh man, we fight about stuff that is just as dumb” as we have gotten people say things like, “You guys are clearly not a good couple” or like, “This is clearly made up.” I think the people who get it, get it and the people who don’t, don’t. And that’s pretty much how everything works, so you can’t let it affect you.
‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’: Comedic insight into human heart By TOM WITOM
planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Fox Valley Repertory’s superb production of the bittersweet “Brighton Beach Memoirs” underscores how well Neil Simon’s probing insights into the human heart and his deft comedic touch retain their potency. The semi-autobiographical coming-of-age play had the opening-night audience at Pheasant Run Resort alternately tensing with anxiety and roaring with laughter. The well-paced show features a talented seven-member cast directed by Ronan Marra. “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” written in 1983, is part of a trilogy that includes “Biloxi Blues” and “Broadway Bound.” Its focal character, Eugene Morris Jerome (smartly played by Ryan Stajmiger), is a stand-in for the playwright. As a 15-year-old in the throes of

center fielder – or a writer. Eugene uses a journal to record events while growing up in 1937 in a cramped house in Brooklyn. He tracks the everyday struggles that confront him and the other six Polish-Jewish Americans comprising his family circle. As his overwrought father is quick to point out: “If you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t live in this house.” Under the same roof are Eugene’s older brother Stanley (Joseph Galizia), a hard-working young man who discovers he has a lot to learn about poker; Jack (Joseph Sterns), the father who’s in burnout mode working two jobs to keep the family afloat; and Kate (Brigitte Ditmars), the mother, a self-admitted worrier and stereotypical martyr who feels under-appreciated. Rounding out the household are Kate’s widowed, asthmatic sister Blanche (Stephanie Chavara), who, after her
husband died, moved in with her two pampered daughters, Laurie (Elizabeth Stenholt), who plays up her heart murmur for all it’s worth; and Nora (Ariel Begley), her older 16-year-old sister who yearns to trade high school for a career in the movies. And there’s never a dull moment. Just when the family’s resources appear stretched to the limit, the possibility arises that they will be joined by other relatives fleeing oppression as war breaks out in Europe. One of the play’s funniest scenes involves Eugene’s worldly older brother sharing the facts of life with his innocent sibling. Commenting on his sexual awakening in a brief soliloquy, Eugene muses: “If I had my choice between a tryout with the Yankees and actually seeing her [Nora’s] bare breasts for two and a half seconds, I would have some serious thinking to do.”

AURORA – The noise inside Rosary’s gym was deafening, with every point seemingly giving one side the momentum it needed to finally put the other away. At the end, it was St. Charles East who came out on top in a thrilling, 29-27, 27-25 girls volleyball victory over Rosary on Sept. 8. After trailing, 6-0, early in the second set, the Saints (7-1) made the adjustments and stormed back, taking a 9-8 lead. Rosary hung around all set after trailing, 16-11 but never retook the lead. Saints outside hitter Meagan Smith had a couple crucial kills down the stretch, while Kyla Augustine and Megan Schildmeyer stood tall at the net, creating several tandem blocks. The Royals staved off match point four times, capitalizing on East’s mistakes to tie the game at 24-24 and again at 25-25. But after a failed serve attempt by Rosary libero Martha Konovodoff in which she stepped over the line without hitting the ball, the Saints retook the lead and finally put it away on the next point. After a solid volley between the teams, Rosary middle hitter Michaela Ping looked for the kill on the near baseline, but the ball went just out, giving the Saints the victory. St. Charles East coach Jennie Kull gave plenty of credit to the opposition and wondered if her team was fatigued from the Conant Invitational over the weekend, where her side lost in the championship match to St. Francis. Kull said the adjustments her team made after falling behind early in both sets helped the team get the win but said it’s still a learning experience. “We talk about controlling the ball and making sure we’re not making the errors,” Kull said. “That’s the biggest

We’ve got seniors and we’ve got sophomores. There are some juniors in there and it’s an experience. They were reaching and trying to make good plays and their other teammates were there, and that’s part of not really feeling comfortable, even as yet. We’ll get those little things worked out and we’ll get better.” While the Saints came out on the winning side, it easily could have been the hosts winning in straight sets. After dropping both sets despite early leads, Rosary coach Rachel Hartmann remained optimistic and said
developing the killer instinct will come in time for her young team. “They’re young girls and when they start learning the situation, I think the game will go a different way,” Hartmann said. “Obviously St. Charles is a great team and I’ve been begging these girls to start playing confident. They’ve been young and a little scared at times, and I think that after the loss they’re going to start building that and getting better.” In the first set, the Royals jumped all over the Saints, opening up a 10-3 lead. But East clawed back into the match after a timeout, finally tying the game at 16-16 before going ahead 18-16. Rosary was undeterred as
the sides traded points before East had a set point opportunity up 24-23. But Rosary’s frontcourt duo of Ping and Erin Burke came up with a huge block and recorded another two points later to put the Royals back on top 25-24. The set appeared to end there, when Ping batted down a weak hit, but the line judge ruled her hands had crossed over the line and awarded the point to the Saints. Rosary retook the lead on the next play to go to another set point up at 26-25, but Molly Curley’s ensuing serve went straight into the net. The Saints lost the next point and fought off another set point, rallying to win the next three and take the first set. East’s refusal to lose and fast

start to the season might have some looking to the big picture, but Kull insisted she just looks at games one at a time. “They’re where they should be right now,” Kull said. “They definitely have some things to get better on, but I’m pleased with where they are right now. But we have a lot of work to do. The only game I care about is the one tomorrow.” Her players echoed her sentiments, with Schildmeyer saying they’d need to improve to keep up with their early season pace. “We felt like we didn’t play our best tonight,” Schildmeyer said. “We have a couple games coming up against teams just like this or better and we’ll need to pick it up.”
