Art in Your Eye fest is successful BATAVIA – The first thing one might notice in looking at one of Pamela Hamilton’s portraits is the intensity of her subject’s eyes. “The eyes are the window to the soul,” said the Geneva artist, whose work was on display Sept. 21 at the Art in Your Eye fine art festival in downtown Batavia. “I’ve always liked to paint eyes, even as a child.” Sept. 21 was the final day of the festival, which opened the night of Sept. 19 at the Batavia Riverwalk in downtown Batavia. In the past three years, Hamilton has participated in about 50 art shows, which has allowed her to educate people about her art. Several mediums of art were on display at the festival. Brad Pogatetz of Batavia won an award of excellence at the festival’s fine art show for his photography work. “It’s always great to get recognized with an award,” Pogatetz said. His photography work often spotlights decaying struc-
show, the festival also featured a City Hall exhibit. Batavia resident Joan Joseph marveled at the artwork on display in the exhibit. “It’s great to see that people have such talents, which I envy,” Joseph said. Despite the weekend’s less-than-ideal weather conditions, organizers are calling this year’s festival a success. On and off rain Sept. 20 and 21 “didn’t deter people from coming out,” said Joi Cuartero, the Batavia MainStreet executive director. This is the 10th year of the festival. Batavia MainStreet organized this year’s festival for the first time. As part of Art in Your Eye’s expanded offerings, the festival featured live music Sept. 19 and 20, along with a craft beer and wine garden. Council accepting applications for vacant positions By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The city is now accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Batavia City Council after the recent resignation of 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks. In August, Sparks announced he was resigning from the City Council because
he was moving to North Aurora. Sparks first was elected to the City Council in 2005. Sparks’ term expires in April. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke and the City Council will appoint someone to fill the seat until April. At the Sept. 15 City Council meeting, Schielke said he has received inquiries from five people who expressed interest in the position.
The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1. The City Council is comprised of 14 aldermen, with two representing each of the seven wards in the city. A map of the city’s wards is at the city’s website, www.cityofbatavia.net. Aldermen plan to interview the applicants during a
Joint Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday, Oct. 7, and make an appointment at the Monday, Oct. 20, City Council meeting. During the meeting Sept. 15, Schielke also presented a plaque to Sparks honoring him for his nine years on the City Council. “He always looked out for his constituents,” Schielke
said, in presenting Sparks with the plaque. Along with being on the City Council, Sparks also is known in the community for his lavish Christmas displays at his home on Bluestem Lane in Batavia. The display also served as a way to raise donations for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.

make the people of Batavia aware of how precious they are,” said Rosemary Henders, co-chairman of the Value Our Trees campaign. “We need to nurture and preserve them.” Tags provided by the Morton Arboretum in Lisle list some of the cost benefits provided by specific trees in Batavia using a formula based on the species and size of each tree. Besides adding to the beauty and value of homes in Batavia, trees also have a significant impact on the reduction of carbon dioxide, alleviating the polluting effect of water runoff and reducing heat, thereby reducing cool-
ing costs in the summer, Henders said. For example, the group determined a 300-year-old-plus oak tree located just south of the West Side Cemetery on Route 31 diverts more than 7,000 gallons of stormwater runoff a year and clears 1,016 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air each year. The tags will remain up through the end of September, Henders said. The Value Our Trees campaign has been endorsed by the Batavia Public Library, the Batavia Park District, the Batavia Tree Commission and the Spiritual Green Connection, Henders said.
To highlight the economic and environmental impact of trees on Batavia, members of Value Our Trees, a committee of the Batavia Woman’s Club, have placed tags on between 100 and 150 trees around the community. The tags will remain up through the end of the month. Eric Schelkopf - eschelkopf@shawmedia.com

Resident proposes new world record
BTR The Republican • KCChronicle.com • Thursday, September 25, 2014 • KAN
By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – After scuttling efforts to set a world record for largest group hug, Batavia resident Randy Simonian now wants to set a record for largest kick scooter parade. “This is something families could do,” Simonian said. “It could be fun.” Simonian informed aldermen at the Sept. 16 Joint Committee of the Whole meeting of his plans. He wants to break a record set last year in New Zealand, when 489 participants set a new Guinness World Record for largest kick scooter parade. He hopes to get 1,000 people involved in the event. Simonian wants to break the record in the spring or early summer
of next year but first has to get permission from Guinness World Records. Earlier this year, he scuttled plans to set a new record this month for largest group hug. He wanted to surpass the current Guinness World Record for largest group hug of 10,554 people. Simonian had said there wasn’t enough time to organize such a large event. He noted this new attempt at a world record would be on a much smaller scale. Batavia 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown said he supported Simonian’s efforts. Simonian said he might try to break a new record every year. “I would love to make this an annual thing,” Simonian said. “Why can’t we break a world record every year?”

LOW VISION, HIGHER EXPECTATIONS According to the latest data available from the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 2.9 million Americans are living with “low vision.” This term is a catchall phrase for sight that cannot be corrected to (near-)normal with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Although it ranges from simply having blurry vision to more serious problems (such as double vision), the immediate consequences of low vision are an inability to perform daily activities such as reading a book or newspaper, crossing the street safely, or cooking a meal. While medicine or surgery does not offer a cure, there are some practical steps that can be taken to maximize remaining sight. These may involve magnifying devices, better lighting, or reading-assisting technology. P.S. The number of Americans suffering from low vision is expected to increase 72 percent by 2030, when the last of the Baby Boomers turns 65.

Kane County Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Gatske walks with Gino, his K-9, on Sept. 22 at the sheriff’s office. Gino is nearing retirement age, and the sheriff’s office received a $10,000 grant that will go toward the purchase and training of a new explosive detection K-9. • K-9 Continued from page 10 killed in the line of duty, it would be better than having an officer wounded or killed. Kristen Smith, executive director of Planet Dog Foundation, said a dog’s presence can make offenders back off sooner, as some are more afraid of a dog than a loaded gun. Her Maine-based organization awards grants to programs that train, place and support dogs helping people in need. She said it was a “no-brainer” for the two groups to combine their resources to support the sheriff’s K-9 program. “We like to think we have the best K-9 unit in northern
Illinois,” Perez said. K-9 handlers receive about four weeks of training at Northern Michigan K-9, Gatske said. “It’s a huge commitment and a huge liability to have these,” he said, explaining handlers need to make sure they can control their dog at all times. Gatske said he learned early on to trust Gino. As a new handler, he said he tried to follow a set of footprints while tracking a suspect, but Gino refused to follow him and instead pulled in another direction. Gino led authorities to the suspect, Gatske said. “They don’t search with their eyes,” Gatske said.

Those wanting to know whether ComEd will get the OK to run about 60 miles of high-voltage power lines from Byron to Wayne should get an answer next month. The Illinois Commerce Commission is considering the proposal, and this month a panel of administrative law judges issued a non-binding ruling on the matter. Both the utility company and an opponent to the Grand Prairie Gateway project are encouraged by the proposed order. ComEd spokesperson David O’Dowd in an email noted that 80 percent of the proposed transmission line route – from Byron to just west of Rippburger Road in Plato Center – received favorable feedback. “The order recognizes the value of the project, which will save customers $250 million, reduce greenhouse gasses and create 500 jobs,” O’Dowd said. “We will work with the ICC to address concerns related to the balance of the line. The commission is due to make its final decision on the project by Oct. 27.” The rest of the line is planned for Plato Center – which is west of Elgin and

north of Campton Hills – to Wayne. Of that section, the proposed order states, “the commission finds that ComEd has failed to identify an alternate right of way … and it has failed to show good cause why it should be excused from providing and identifying an alternative right of way for that part of the project.” Overall, the proposed order recommends denying ComEd’s petition. “That’s major,” said opponent John Tomasiewicz, who lives in the Regency at Bowes Creek Country Club in Elgin. “I’m cautiously optimistic. … Now I can only hope the commissioners have the courage to say no.” Tomasiewicz is among those who have filed petitions to intervene – a list that includes Kane County, the city of Elgin, the village of South Elgin and the Kane County
Forest Preserve District. Tomasiewicz got involved last winter after receiving learning his property would be adjacent to the easement, he said, noting it evolved into a community effort. “It affects the quality of our life,” he said. Health effects are among the opponents’ concerns and is one of the topics the panel evaluated. “While the commission is mindful that some intervenors believe there are health risks, we must decide the case based on the evidence before us,” the proposed order states. “The commission finds no credible evidence in the record that the project poses a health risk to residents or livestock.” Visit www.icc.illinois.gov to track the status of and view documents about the Grand Prairie Gateway. Art, fashion join in Water Street Studios’ fundraiser Event to take place Saturday in Batavia By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Those who attend Water Street Studios’ third annual on-som’ bel fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 27, will see how fashion and art interact. The theme of this year’s show is “Avenue + Passage.” The show will be at 7 p.m. at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St., in downtown Batavia. Tickets are $85 a person, and a limited number of VIP tickets are available for $125 a person, which includes reserved front row seating and champagne service. Tickets are also available for $25 for a post-show DJ dance party and access to view the exhibited artwork and runway garments. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Water Street Studios at 630-761-9977 or online at www. waterstreetstudios.com/onsombel. Last year’s show raised approximately $16,000 for the nonprofit Water Street Studios and its programs. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Water Street Studios Board member and event chairperson Laura Spicer about the show. Eric Schelkopf: This is the third year of the event. What was the idea of doing a fashion show for a fundraiser? Laura Spicer: At a certain level, fashion is considered another medium of artwork. And at the level that we are showing, it’s at the experimental level. So, we’re referring to the fashion show as an experimental runway show. It’s a way to provide a spectacle of an experience for our guests at the event. It’s a cross-disciplinary form of artwork. It will feature 16 artists and designers, and 20 models on the runway. The proceeds support all of our programming, which includes educational classes for the public and outreach programs to reach underserved youth in the community. Schelkopf: What’s the idea behind this year’s theme?
Spicer: Last year, we had a very concrete theme, and it was called “The Chair and What You Wear.” It was meant to celebrate the chair as an icon of design. This year, we wanted to go with something that was more intangible, but reflected our growth as an organization. We’re about to celebrate five years as an organization with our anniversary show on Nov. 14. This whole event is a bigger spectacle than last year, just in terms of what we’ve taken on for the whole evening. We will have a silent and live auction this year, whereas last year was our first live auction. We have also added a $25 ticket level for the DJ dance party that will take place after the runway show and auction end. So that will be a 10 p.m. late night entry for people who just want to come and enjoy the music and see the art that was shown. It’s a way for a person with a limited budget to still feel like they are contributing to the organization, and also get some enjoyment out of it by coming to the dance party and having a great evening. Schelkopf: For people who are attending the show for the first time, what should they expect? Spicer: I would say that it’s an event unlike anything you would typically find in the suburbs. It is a spectacle of the arts, because it represents so many various disciplines of the arts. There’s also a gallery exhibition in the main gallery, curated by Water Street Studios’ resident artist Rita Grendze. She also is a very well-respected artist in the community.

GENEVA – One of life’s simple pleasures comes in the form of the American diner. Being able to relish in the round-the-clock service of pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, toast and bottomless coffee while reading a newspaper or chatting with a friend is one of those moments worth savoring. Geneva Diner is the perfect place for just that. Large windows allow for beams of sunlight to trickle in, and the slender, intimate dining room is fit with a breakfast bar that runs the length of one of the eating areas. We plopped into a cozy booth on a Friday morning alongside dining couples, a family and singles fueling up for the final day of the work week. Two waitresses circulated the dining room with coffee pots, while intermittently clearing tables, dropping off food and taking orders. Our waitress filled our coffee cups, and once she started pouring we never saw their bottoms throughout the rest of the meal. The breakfast menu is varied and inexpensive. Breakfast sandwiches, such as the Egg and Cheese Croissant, are popular and comparable in price to any drive-thru. For those wanting to dine in a dash or take food to-go, Geneva Diner takes online orders at thegenevadiner.com. After asking for recommendations for breakfast, we settled on the Santa Fe Omelette ($6.95) and added chicken to it at an added 95 cents. We ordered a side of cheese grits ($2.50), the California Benedict ($7.15) and the Cinnamon Walnut French Toast ($6.50). Attentive, friendly service combated the fact that ticket times were slightly slower than expected, but once the hot food came out – and all at once – everything was wellworth the wait.

ksilva@shawmedia.com The “Harry Potter” series, “A Wrinkle in Time” and “The Scarlet Letter” are among the many titles depicted on a poster hanging in the back of high school English teacher Rick Holinger’s classroom. The poster displays the covers of books that have been banned over the course of history, often leaving Marmion Academy students puzzled as to why they were banished in the first place. “People ban books to exterminate ideas they imagine [to be] a threat to their values,” Holinger wrote in an email, while also referencing the “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” – an American slave’s memoir – to cement his point. “Frederick Douglass, when a slave, was forbidden to read because reading would – and did – deliver the concept of freedom. By the time [Douglass] was a teenager, he’d read enough pirated writing to decide he’d rather die trying to escape slavery than live as a slave.” As long as there are books being banned, “their status needs to be foregrounded, and the reasons why explored,” Holinger, also a columnist for the Kane County Chronicle, added. Every year, educators, librarians, writers and readers join together to do just that. Since 1982, Banned Books Week, which runs through Saturday, Sept. 27, has reminded Americans about the importance of preventing censorship and of their fundamental freedom to read, said American Library Association President Courtney Young in a news release. “Banned Books Week is one week of the year that the American Library Association has designated [when] librarians and readers can raise awareness of the fact that books are still being banned and challenged throughout America,” said Stacey Peterson, the adult

maybe not like it or agree with it but still talk about it.” To celebrate the weeklong event, the Todd Library, as well as Geneva Public Library and Batavia Public Library, have created displays featuring challenged books, such as Sherman Alexie’s “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” and work by classic novelists,
such as Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Mark Twain. The Todd Library also will be handing out promotional items, such as buttons and bookmarks that give information about the locations books have been banned and for what reasons.

The focus of this year’s Banned Books Week is graphic novels, two of which were represented among the 28 titles mentioned on ALA’s bibliography of books challenged, restricted, removed or banned as reported in the Newsletter on Intellectual Freedom from May 2013 to March 2014. “Captain Underpants” (series), a graphic novel by Dav Pilkey, came in at No. 1 on the ALA’s “Top 10 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2013,” for violence and offensive language, and was deemed unsuited for its intended age group. The other graphic novel cited in the newsletter was “The Dark Knight Rises: I Am Bane,” a 24-page picture book by Lucy Rosen. “I Am Bane” made the list because of a challenge that took place at the Geneva Public Library, but the book was retained despite concerns that the images were “too scary” for young readers. “We have a procedure that

SPORTS Marathon victory hurts so good for Wysong Indiana man treated for dehydration in aftermath of victory; Hird top female finisher
Know more For a video of Fox Valley co-race director Dave Sheble reflecting on this year’s race, log on to KCChronicle.com.
By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Charles Wysong won the first marathon he’s even run. Misery was his immediate reward, though pride and fulfillment soon followed. Wysong, winner of Sunday’s fifth annual Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon, crossed in 2:44.58, but celebration for the 26-year-old Indiana man was delayed as dehydration left him woozy at the finish line. He was whisked to the medical tent near the finish line, and estimated he then consumed about a gallon of water and Gatorade in the span of half an hour. “It was a little concerning but it wasn’t a huge deal,” Wysong said. “I rebounded pretty fast. I was on the edge. If I would have been just a little more dehydrated, it would have been bad.” Wysong said the last few miles of the race left him “seeing stars” as he willed himself to keep chugging despite the pain. “When you get dehydrated, it’s pretty much your whole body, your muscles lose the ability to move,” Wysong said. “It’s harder and harder to move your muscles and takes more and more will power and effort to just make muscles react the way you want them to, and then they don’t work as well.” The weather Sunday morning was cool and breezy, which might have played into Wysong’s predicament. In addition to his lack of marathon experience, Wysong said the conditions caused him to underestimate his need for fluids, and he ran through water stations rather than slowing down. His physical duress curtailed the revelry at the finish line, but co-race organizer Dave Sheble said the marathon is well-equipped to deal with medical adversity. “You always hate to see a runner in distress, especially a winner,” Sheble said. “Obviously he left it all on the course out there.” A former college runner at Hillsdale College (Mich.), Wysong hadn’t previously run a race longer than a 10K. He said a friend challenged him to run the Boston Marathon, and al-

Fox Valley Marathon winner Charles Wysong receives care at the finish line Sunday, Sept. 21, in St. Charles. Wysong, who blamed dehydration for his post-race struggles, finished in 2:44.58. though that timing didn’t work out, it intrigued him to give marathon running a whirl. A younger brother looked after him in the race’s aftermath while his sister, Dorothy, and parents, Phil and Vi, also participated in the day’s races, which included a 20-mile run and half marathon. Wysong, who resides in Wawaka, Indiana, with his wife, Marta, and 6-month-old daughter, Eva, is a farmer, raising pigs and grain. Both running and farming “take perseverance,” said Wysong, as Sunday’s race reflected to an extreme.
“It was challenging but it was worth it,” Wysong said. “It’s cool to just race as a family. That’s pretty neat.” Wysong finished more than 5 minutes ahead of runner-up Jordan Kremer, 23, of Naperville. It was also the first marathon for Kremer, a graduate assistant cross country and track coach at North Central College, where he ran collegiately. Kremer finished in 2:50.16. “My high school coach [at Belvidere North] is here,” Kremer said. “He told me [Wysong] had about six minutes on me so I wasn’t really going
after him. I just wanted to finish, you know?” Another Naperville resident, Marisa Hird, was the top women’s marathon finisher. The 28-year-old Hird placed second among women at the inaugural Naperville Marathon last year. “Can’t complain,” said Hird, whose winning time Sunday was 2:53.37. “I was hoping for faster, but with the wind, it’s what I had today.” Hird hit the finish line in downtown St. Charles more than 15 minutes faster than women’s runner-up, Ariell Bachman, of Chicago. About 3,800 runners registered for Sunday’s races, which again stretched from St. Charles to Aurora and back, with some minor tweaks to the course. Just like the previous years, runners’ feedback was largely upbeat. “Running right along the river is always pretty enjoyable,” said Allie Walters, of Chicago, the top female finisher in the half marathon (1:26.53). “The wind was kind of tough the last few miles coming at us, but besides that, it was a nice course.” Sheble said runners who have taken part in each of the five years of the event received special medals saluting their loyalty. He said “a huge number” of runners are repeat entries. “We say we’re just as committed to you as you are to us, coming back year after year, so that’s been fun to watch,” Sheble said. One of those marathoners returning for more was North Aurora resident Chris Benyo, 49. Benyo’s enthusiasm for the Fox Valley Marathon remains intact, and said he liked some of the adjustments to the course this year. “It seemed like we were on street a lot more, which is fine,” Benyo said. “Because when you’re on the path, you’ve got bikers and people walking dogs and stuff like that. [The race organizers] are great. I’ll do this every year as long as I can. It’s a fantastic marathon.”
