eshields@shawmedia.com Glenbard Township High School District 87 administrators and teachers are pleased with the progress students have made since the district’s iPad rollout began last semester. In August 2014, the 2,100 Glenbard freshmen received district-issued iPads, which hold their textbooks, novels, workbooks and assignment materials. Glenbard West High School Principal Peter Monaghan said the program’s success shouldn’t be a surprise. Students and teachers all underwent training before the school year so they would know how to use the iPads and relevant applications. Monaghan said he was a little nervous about the rollout, but thanks to “a great deal of preparation,” there haven’t been any major issues so far. Teachers and students alike have gone beyond his expectations in terms of adapting to the devices, he said. Monaghan said he recently got the chance to watch the iPads being used in a U.S.

“I would say that so far, it seems to be going better than expected for this early.” Peter Monaghan Glenbard West High School principal history class. Students were able to read articles and complete and submit their homework on the device. They also used a map application that showed where each of the events being studied had happened. “It was one of the best lessons I’ve seen using it,” he said. Teachers across the district are incorporating the iPads in new and innovative ways. Gary Heilers, department chair for physical education, health and driver’s education at Glenbard North High School, said iPads are even being used in his classes. The biggest way they are included in physical education is by tracking student fitness. Students wear heart monitors, which are connected to Heilers’ iPad. He can watch the progress of the entire class and use the data to help students analyze their workouts.

Before iPads, students could wear a heart monitor during class, but tracking the data was much more difficult. “Now we have some concrete stuff,” Heilers said. The iPads also are being used in the weight room, where Heilers has the students video model themselves doing a squat. After that, they watch the recording to see if they are doing the exercise correctly and where to improve their form. “To video model is great because they actually get a sense of what they’re doing wrong and right,” he said. In health classes, students each get remote controls to answer questions. The iPad tabulates the responses and Heilers can use the data to determine whether students understand the subject matter. Driver’s education classes don’t include iPads yet since

only freshmen have them, but Heilers said next year’s students will likely do peer assessments of other students’ driving with the iPads. “It’s kind of taken over as the norm for us,” he said. At Glenbard East High School, English teacher Jennifer O’Connor has her students use the iPad camera to record themselves giving a speech and provide a self assessment of the performance, according to district Communications Coordinator Peg Mannion. Students will look back on previous videos to see how they progress. Monaghan said the two biggest outcomes of the iPad rollout are the increased organization and heightened engagement of students. He also said he doesn’t see any major changes that need to be made. If he could do it again, Monaghan said he would make minor tweaks, but nothing substantial. “I would say that so far, it seems to be going better than expected for this early,” he said. He credited the students and teachers with all the success. “As principal, I’ve been very pleased,” Monaghan said.

BLOOMINGDALE – The volunteers in Community Consolidated School District 93’s Mentor Program must be three things: caring, concerned and consistent. The district is seeking area residents to participate in the program, providing support to a local student and serving as an additional adult role model. “It really gives our students an extra opportunity to succeed,” district Community Relations Coordinator Ryan McPherrin said. POLL QUESTION: How optimistic are your about the economy in 2015? Vote online at mysuburbanlife.com.

Wage hike will hurt those it’s meant to help SPRINGFIELD – Many years ago, I was a minimum-wage worker making $3.35 an hour writing obituaries for the Galesburg Register-Mail. More than a few times during that college summer break I had an editor holler at me, “There is no ‘a’ in cemetery!” But I learned how to meet deadlines, deal with the public and spell a bit better. Most people I know have had similar first-job expeVIEWS riences. They didn’t earn a Scott whole lot, but they learned Reeder enough to help them get a better job down the road. We could spend a lot of time bemoaning the loss of low-paying positions to innovation or we can simply accept that businesses will seek the most cost-effective solutions. That’s why talk of raising the state’s minimum wage is troubling. While it will result in pay raises for some lucky individuals, it will result in fewer jobs for the state’s low-skill workers. As the cost of labor goes up, the demand will go down. When I mentioned this economic principle to a friend, he asked, “Then, who will do the work if positions are eliminated?” Look no further than McDonald’s for the answer. According to a recent Malcolm Berko column, the fast-food chain anticipates adding touch screens in 2,000 of its 15,000 restaurants in 2015. Customers, rather than employees, will be the ones pecking away at the touch screens and sending their orders directly to the kitchen. According to the Berko analysis, this will result in the elimination of four to six employees per location, reducing labor costs by $110,000 per location. Many of these fast food workers who would see their jobs eliminated earn the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage will accelerate the loss of these and other jobs. Most folks earning minimum wage are either younger than 25 or working part time, a 2012 study conducted by the Cato Institute found. This runs contrary to the narrative of Gov. Pat Quinn and others. In November 2014, Quinn said, “Our minimum wage is $8.25. It is not enough for a mom, a dad or anyone to raise a family on.” He’ll get no argument from me on that. But the Cato study found less than 5 percent of those earning minimum wage are heads of households. So raising the minimum wage will do little to help those trying to raise families and will do much to hurt young people trying to enter the workforce. And, in this economy, that’s the last thing we want to do.

Downers Grove should consider village complex

There has been a lot of talk about spending $52 million dollars on a new village complex to include the village hall, police department and fleet maintenance. Although private four-year colleges are noting their very minimal tuition hikes this year, they have a history of disregarding the inflation rate in many years by large percents. Yet, students are burdened with loans that will last a lifetime, and at the same time, find it hard to find decent-paying jobs. Why not “get even” by spending the first two years at a high quality community college like the College of DuPage? Then, transfer as a junior, which becomes quite easy for most four-year colleges. You’ll end up with as good an education, less student loans and probably save at least $50,000 to $200,000 in the process.

ISU set for title game The FCS Championship game between Illinois State

and three-time defending champ North Dakota State on Saturday will have a local flavor to it. The Redbirds’ roster includes senior offensive lineman Rocco Ammons (Wheaton Warrenville South), sophomore offensive lineman Kyle Avaloy (Glenbard South) and freshman wide receiver Matt Biegalski (Wheaton North). Ammons has been a mainstay on the field throughout his collegiate career. He played in seven games as a freshman before starting 13 and 11 games,

respectively, during his next two years. A constant fixture on the Redbirds’ offensive line this season, Saturday will mark Ammons’ final college game. Avaloy is the starting left guard for the Redbirds this season after seeing action in four games in 2013. The contest will be played at 12:05 p.m. Saturday in Frisco, Texas. The Redbirds went 10-1 during the regular season before knocking off Northern Iowa, Eastern Washington and New Hampshire in the playoffs.

CAROL STREAM – The Glenbard North boys basketball team took a lot of momentum into the new year after closing out the Glenbard West Holiday Classic with three straight wins. The Panthers defeated eventual tournament champion Leyden 54-49, Montini 47-27 and St. Francis 63-59. “I think we are playing better basketball, especially defensively,” Glenbard North coach Joe Larson said. “Nick Lavere and Michael Matkovic played very well at the guard position defensively and also did a nice job offensively. Nick was an all-tournament selection which was nice for him; he had some nice scoring nights.

thought we learned a lot of things there and responded really well the next night against Leyden.” Next up for Glenbard North is a nonconference affair against St. Charles North on Saturday before resuming DuPage Valley conference action Jan. 16 against Wheaton Warrenville South. “We are going to be seeing tough teams,” Larson said.
