SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Former U.S. Rep. Philip Crane died Saturday at age 84 after a long battle with lung cancer. Crane represented Illinois’ 8th District – formerly the 12th District – in the northwest suburbs from 1969 until 2004. The district includes all or parts of several towns including Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Lombard, Roselle, Streamwood, Villa Park and Wood Dale. “Today, we mourn the loss of one of the great leaders from northern Illinois,” U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., said in a statement. “He will always be remembered for vowing to never raise taxes, a promise he kept

through his long career, and for expanding trade opportunities for our state. I send best wishes and prayers to his family.” Crane was a leading national figure in the conservative movement through his book “The Democrat’s Dilemma” and his efforts with the Barry Goldwater presidential campaign in 1964, according to his obituary with Loudoun Funeral Chapels. He also was involved in presidential politics as a candidate

in the 1980 Republican presidential primary before withdrawing and throwing his support to former President Ronald Reagan, the obituary stated. During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, Crane championed lower taxes, a simplified tax code, free market economics and free trade as a member of the Ways and Means Committee, according to his obituary. He was instrumental in

the founding of conservative organizations that still exist today, including the Republican Study Committee, a GOP caucus in the House and the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, the obituary stated. Crane died at the home of his daughter, Rebekah, in Jefferson, Md., according to his obituary. In addition to Rebekah, he is survived by his siblings, Judy, Daniel and David; his children, Catherine, Susanna, Jennifer, Sarah, George and Carrie; and numerous grandchildren, his obituary stated. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Cora Crane; his wife, Arlene; his brother, George; and his daughter, Rachel.

DuPage County Board seeking applicants to fill McBride seat SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin is accepting applications to fill the District 4 vacancy left after the death of board member JR McBride, according to a county news release. McBride died Oct. 24 after a long battle with cancer. He served District 4, which includes all or part of Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Lombard,

Bloomingdale, Addison, Winfield, Lisle and Downers Grove. To view a map of the district, visit www.dupageco. org/CountyBoard/Dist4Map. “I encourage District 4 residents to consider serving on the County Board,” Cronin said in the release. “The nominee will help advance our reform agenda to make DuPage County a smarter, more efficient form of government.” McBride’s successor will serve the district for the re-

mainder of his term, which expires Nov. 30, 2016. Candidates are required to live in the district and to submit a cover letter of intent of 300 words or less summarizing why he or she is interested in serving on the board, a resume and an application. Applications are available at www.dupageco.org/district4app. Because McBride was a Republican, applicants must be as well.

Applications will be screened and a candidate forum for finalists will be Nov. 22, after which Cronin will select a nominee and submit it to the County Board for a vote at its Dec. 9 meeting. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Tuesday. Applications may be submitted by mail to the County Board Office at 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL 601877, by email to chairman@dupageco. org or by fax to 630-407-6001.

CAROL STREAM – Carol Stream organizations are coming together to teach local students how to be respectful, not just in the classroom, but outside of school as well through Community Consolidated School District 93’s Expect Respect Community Coalition. The coalition, which meets once a month, was formed in spring 2013, when the district invited local groups to learn more about its efforts to combat bullying. “It’s raising awareness that we’re all working together,” said Sharon Frys, assistant superintendent of Student Services and Continuous Improvement. Active members include Carol Stream’s park district, public library and police department, as well as St. Isidore School, Glenbard North High School and the YWCA Patterson and McDaniel Family Center. The coalition’s goal is to integrate district behavioral expectations throughout the community by sharing and teaching the common message of the district’s Expect Respect anti-bullying initiative across organizations. Expect Respect teaches students strategies to handle bullying and was introduced to the district in 2011. It is a component of the district’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support program. Strategies include stopping, walking away and talking to an adult if a student feels disrespected or stopping, breathing and leaving the area if they are told they are being disrespectful. Carol Stream Public Library’s strategic plan coming soon The Carol Stream Public Library has been an integral part of the village of Carol Stream for over 52 years. The library began in a room at the Village Hall when it was located on Blackhawk Drive back in 1962. The starting collection of books and magazines, as well as the furniture and shelves, were all donated by local residents. The present library buildCOMMUNITY ing opened in 1978 and has VOICE continually expanded its Susan services throughout the years to include a wide range Westgate of materials, programs and computer services for the community. Over the past six months, the Carol Stream Public Library has been involved in an intensive strategic planning process. The purpose of creating the comprehensive strategic plan is to provide the library with a road map of goals and objectives to guide our energies and resources for the next three years to meet the ever-changing needs and interests of the community. During this past summer, the library conducted an online survey and held 10 focus groups to gather feedback from the community and staff regarding library services. A two-day collaborative retreat, comprised of patrons, community leaders, staff and the library board president, was held in September. At this meeting, a mission, vision, goals and objectives were all identified. A draft three-year strategic plan was developed as a culmination of the survey and focus group outcomes. The plan was posted online to provide the community an opportunity for feedback. Modifications to the plan were made based upon this input. The final version of the strategic plan will be presented to the Library Board of Trustees at their Dec. 17 meeting for approval. The actions to implement the goals and objectives identified in the plan are scheduled to begin in January. The library appreciates the feedback and participation we received from the community during this process. The plan will be the library’s guide for developing and delivering exceptional services in the years ahead. We look forward to this journey and thank the community of Carol Stream for their participation in the library’s continued success.

Susan Westgate is the director of the Carol Stream Public Library.

A combined color guard waits Tuesday for their 21-gun salute outside Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6791 during a Veterans Day observance in West Chicago.

OUR VIEW

We owe our veterans more Tuesday was Veterans Day, when we honor those who have served in America’s armed forces. It’s wonderful to honor our veterans. For all they have done, they deserve a day to be given accolades. There were 19.6 million military veterans in the United States as of 2013, according to the Census Bureau. Of those, 9.3 million were 65 years and older, and 1.6 million were younger than 35. In 2013, there were 3.6 million veterans with a service-connected disability, which is one that was a result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service. They served because they believed in something bigger than themselves: They believed in their country. They sacrificed for the benefit of others. They understood that a country that cherishes freedom as an ideal requires some give up their freedom for the benefit of others. In many ways, our country fails veterans. Think of how many have had to wait

David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

to get serviced at the nation’s veterans hospitals. Multiple deployments to dangerous, hostile lands can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder or suicide: There are 30,000 to 32,000 U.S. deaths from suicide a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and of those, about 20 percent are veterans. We owe them more. Saying thank you to a veteran, or attending a Veterans Day ceremony to honor them, is a wonderful, heartfelt gesture. But we cannot stop with that: We must demand our veterans receive the care they deserve for giving their all for their country. We must show our gratitude every day, not just the one day a year set aside for doing so. As John F. Kennedy once said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Impatient drivers who pass on the right into the right lane to get around traffic that’s slower than they want in the left lane put teenage drivers and seniors at risk because the right lane is where they drive to stay safe and pick their speed. Unfortunately, the people who do this often don’t read newspapers.

Respect the residents near West Avenue I read about the five streets on West Avenue. Cars pile up, they wait for the light to change and they speed and cut people off, just to be sure they’re one of the six cars or so that make the lights. We homeowners and apartment dwellers can’t get out of our own homes, because we’re blocked in [by] these discourteous people. Remember, you have a choice what street to go down. We don’t. We have rights as well. The elections are over, which means all of the TV and radio and robocalls are going to end. Oh, wait, Christmas is just around the corner, which means more TV and radio ads touting sales, extended hours and discounts for the Christmas shopping season. Then there are robocalls from charities requesting money, including many charities you never heard about. The election season is over, and another season starts.

Avoid the scams I am calling to remind people not to fall for phone scams. I got a message today that told me to call a certain number or I would be in trouble with the IRS. A couple of minutes of research on Google told me all I needed to know about this massive scam that has been

going around for months. Don’t transfer money to some unknown card under any circumstance. If you are nervous, talk to someone you trust who can check anything out that you are confused about. Don’t fall for these scams.

Brush on Woodridge Drive makes it difficult to see Someone wrote in [Oct. 29] in regards to the boulevards on Woodridge Drive between Center Drive and 75th [Street] … I was thinking the same thing for many, many weeks. It just looks terrible. The brush is too large. You can’t see, when you’re turning if cars are coming. I don’t know what they were thinking. It just looks very unkempt.

Restaurant reviews

Armand’s Pizzeria flavors artful space ELMHURST – Having heard the restaurant’s roots go back to 1956, and that a family recipe for thin-crust pizza is behind the longevity, we decided to visit Armand’s Pizzeria in downtown Elmhurst. It was a Sunday evening, and the happy surprise of the day’s half-price ribs deal meant all our favorite food groups were covered. The menu extends to Italian staples, as well as sandwiches, salads, steaks and its signature stuffed artichoke and baked clam appetizers. Making the visuals of the dining room a standout are oversized artworks paying playful homage to Italy. One side celebrates famed visages from antiquity and the other salutes contemporary portraits with a fun vibe. An inviting bar offers a dozen stools for seating and several unobtrusive televisions nearby. As we relaxed on a comfy banquette, our diligent server brought a bread basket with two choices. The standard slices paled in comparison to the marinara-and-spice focaccia bread that we happily polished off before it could cool. Next, with ribs on our minds, we decided to turn a half slab into a shared appetizer. It was a perfect choice. The ribs were meaty and tender, bathed in a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce for rich, satisfying flavor that hit all the right notes. And given that it was a dinner item, it was accompanied by a hearty minestrone and a vegetable medley that had us feeling downright virtuous. My dining companion had to try the thin-crust pizza, ordering it with the house-made Italian sausage, along with spinach, tomato and mushrooms. It came loaded with toppings on a crispy, cornmeal-dusted crust with a delicate tomato sauce base, and deeply fennel-infused sausage in the old-school tradition. I opted for the chicken

Marsala, a dish featuring the aforementioned fortified wine for the mushroom-laced sauce. My plate arrived with a generously portioned chicken breast smothered in a sauce packed with wonderful mushroom slices.

After the richly satisfying ribs, I couldn’t do justice to it, and went home with another meal for us to share. About to celebrate its 60th anniversary, Armand’s currently has a second full-service restaurant in Arlington

La Grange. About to join the family-owned enterprise is a full-service tavern featuring pizza and small plates that will adopt the original name from 1956 – Armand’s Victory Tap. It is scheduled to open at Yorktown Center in Lombard around Thanksgiving.

Wheaton Academy wins state By DEREK WOLFF msleditorial@shawmedia.com HOFFMAN ESTATES – The Wheaton Academy boys soccer team left little doubt about which team was superior in Class 2A this season. The Warriors emerged victorious in dominating fashion Saturday, defeating St. Joseph 5-1 in the IHSA Class 2A state championship match. Wheaton Academy (25-1-1) won its first state title in program history in the process, distancing the memories of the past two seasons when they settled for fourth in the state both times. “That was the main drive, just that the last two years we couldn’t quite hold out, so we knew that we only had one shot with this team, especially the seniors,” senior forward Reid Culberson said. “We knew we had a good team, so we really wanted to win this game and that’s what drove us.” The Warriors, who beat Springfield 4-0 in Nov. 7 semis behind three goals from Ty Seager, never trailed in the final after going up early on a strike by Lucas Hoepner, his first of two goals on the afternoon. Culberson then added his first of two goals, collecting a rebound after Ty Seager drove a ball toward the net from the right side. Seager hooked up with Hoepner in the 34th minute to triple the lead, but St. Joseph was able to get on the board a minute later off a set piece to make the score 3-1 at half. “We were up by two goals at halftime and knew that it’s going to take a full 80 to win the game,” Seager said. “We weren’t going to give up, so we tried to do that and get another goal and another goal just to put it away and ultimately finish the game and finish on a strong note.” Jha’Lon Johnson connected on a shot after finding a ball from 15 yards off a corner kick from Jacob Kapitaniuk in the 59th minute to make it 4-1. Wheaton Academy’s Ty Seager celebrates his first goal against Springfield on Nov. 7 during their state semifinal game at Hoffman Estates. Wheaton Academy won the state championship Saturday, beating St. Joseph 5-1. minutes later, Culberson added his second goal to increase the lead to the final tally of 5-1. “They were a very resilient team, so we knew that we just had to keep piling it on until they finally went away,” Culberson said. “Even at the end of the game they never really did. You just have to fight until

the end.” The final whistle ended a special season for Wheaton Academy and sent off its core group of seniors, seven of whom will continue on next season in college, coach Jeff Brooke believes. “This group, it’s a really special group,” Brooke said.

“We’ve got more seniors than I think we’ve ever had and they just laid down a chemistry that was going to be about the team. It was going to be about each individual day. I remember back in August, September, October, we weren’t focusing on today, we were focusing on that day. To have that type

of focus for high school students, I’ve just been nothing but impressed.” The Warriors deliberately played a difficult schedule this season, including matchups against big-time 3A schools Batavia, St. Charles East and Morton. Brooke said that strategy more than paid dividends Saturday. “At the beginning of the year we try to set up competition that drives us to be our best,” Brooke said. “That’s why we call St. Charles East, that’s why we want to be in the Pepsi (tournament). It’s been our strategy and really our model that to be stretched as far as we can in the regular season will prepare us for today’s moment, and I think we were ready.” Aside from Moreno’s rocket strike late in the first half, the Warriors locked down the defensive third on the afternoon, but senior goalkeeper Drew Sezenov was still tested from space and finished with 11 saves. Brooke said his back line and goalkeeper were a major difference in two lopsided victories this weekend. “I think playing back to back, we showed an ability to possess the ball but also had a killer instinct,” Brooke said. “I think our back four plus our GK making it five haven’t gotten enough credit all year. We learned in the Pepsi, we learned against (St. Charles) East, we learned against Batavia that we have a rock-solid back four, and with that I think we can go pretty far. It stretched us for today’s moment and I thought the guys really shined.” With high expectations all season after dropping only one match to 3A powerhouse Morton, Culberson said accomplishing the main goal was a dream come true. “We’ve been working day in and day out to try and work towards this goal that we set at the beginning of the year,” Culberson said. “It’s just amazing that it’s become a reality now and we all get to experience it.”

The boys soccer season is officially in the books after two championship

games Saturday. Now is the perfect time to honor the best players with

About Ty Seager

Wheaton Academy’s 2014 opponents quickly found out the West Chicago resident added an extra gear. Finding the back of the net early and often this season, the forward nearly reached the 40goal plateau, finishing with 39 goals after recording a hattrick in the Warriors Class 2A state semifinal victory. “I did track last year in the spring and I believe that helped my game a ton,” said Seager, who advanced downstate in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. “My teammates and coaches could see
