By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – The Carol Stream Fire Protection District Board of Fire Commissioners has recommended one of its battalion chiefs be terminated as a hearing process that has lasted more than a year nears conclusion. Joseph Gilles, a 19-year district veteran, was suspended in September 2013 after being charged with insubordination by Chief Richard Kolomay when he failed to sign a performance improve-

ment plan. Kolomay reportedly pursued the plan because of Gilles’ weight and inability to stay awake at work. Gilles’ attorneys argued during various hearings that the conflict was actually about his refusal to cover up negligence in the district surrounding an August 2012 choking death involving two Carol Stream paramedics. Those claims were deemed invalid by the board last month, when the board found Kolomay’s request for Gilles to complete the plan was not

retaliatory and that certain elements of Gilles’ testimony concerning the choking incident were not credible. Kolomay’s attorney, Karl Ottosen, said the chief was left with no choice but to pursue termination for Gilles, as he refused to respond to a request for improvement. “I certainly think it is the right action,” Ottosen said of the recommendation to terminate Gilles, which the board made at a hearing Nov. 19. However, Gilles’ attorney, Aldo Botti, said the board’s

Eight candidates compete for DuPage County Board seat By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Eight area political hopefuls are vying to become the newest member of the DuPage County Board. But it won’t require another election – at least, not yet. On Saturday, County Board Chairman Dan Cronin and District 4 board members Grant Eckhoff and Amy Grant

heard from candidates seeking to replace Glen Ellyn resident and Republican JR McBride, who died Oct. 24 after a long battle with cancer. The group took questions from the trio in front of about 18 members of the public at the DuPage County complex, answering queries about county governance, past experience and issues of interest during the nearly two-hour meeting,

said county spokeswoman Joan Olson. The finalists, culled from 34 original applicants, are Wheaton residents Alan Bolds and Michelle Moore, and Glen Ellyn residents Tim Elliot, Catherine Galvin, Robert Gans, Lawrence LaVanway, Mark Pfefferman and Karyn Romano. District 4 also includes parts of Carol Stream, Glendale

recommendation did not align with the evidence and was not justified. “We think it’s totally inappropriate,” he said. In order to finalize the firing, the district’s Board of Trustees must vote on it. Botti expects the trustees will order the termination, and said if they do, Gilles will appeal the outcome to the 18th Judicial Circuit Court, and possibly pursue civil action as well. Ottosen said he anticipates the trustees will vote on the termination Dec. 15.

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – With Thanksgiving over, the holiday shopping season is well underway, offering opportunities for Carol Stream residents to get gifts for loved ones while also supporting village businesses. This weekend marks the fifth annual Small Business Saturday. Established in 2010 by American Express, the

event celebrates small businesses by encouraging communities to patronize hometown retailers. And while Carol Stream may not have a traditional Main Street or shopping thoroughfare, there are plenty of businesses in the village that can benefit from the holiday’s commercial surge, Carol Stream Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Luanne Newman said.

“We just have to remember to keep shopping those local businesses,” she said. Newman suggested several potential holiday gifts available at village retailers. They include: beauty products at Lucid Salon, Shimmer Hair Salon and Mary Kay; gift certificates for local restaurants like Village Tavern & Grill; and luxury items such as a massage or facial from Massage Clinique or Hand & Stone Massage and

D-93 seeks feedback on performance The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Improvement Act was created in 1987 to boost the competitiveness of American businesses with ever expanding global markets. A Baldrige Criteria was developed to recognize world-class organizations. This criteria was designed to support organizations striving to perform at the highest levels. High-performing organizaCOMMUNITY tions measure every facet of VOICE their activity, monitor perforBill mance and continuously Shields work to improve processes. While I’m proud to say Community Consolidated School District 93 does all of this on a regular basis internally, it’s important for us to gain an outsider’s perspective to fully gauge our overall performance so we may continue to improve the educational experience that we offer students. For-profit businesses often employ costly consultants for this type of perspective, but as stewards of stakeholder resources, this is not an option for District 93. Instead, we recently chose to seek feedback on our organizational performance from Illinois Performance Excellence, a nonprofit entity that uses Baldrige Criteria to identify strengths and key areas for improvement essential to achieving higher performance levels. In the spring of 2014, District 93 completed a 48-page comprehensive application for ILPEx, and was awarded a site visit. A site visit from ILPEx is provided to organizations that have demonstrated continued excellence in their application. Simply earning a site visit was a testament to what our outstanding staff does each day for our students. Recently, nine volunteer ILPEx examiners from throughout Illinois visited CCSD93’s District Office and nine schools to gain a better understanding of District 93 as an organization and determine where we are in relationship to the Baldrige Criteria. Together, the examiners spent more than 1,000 hours combing through data and reviewing District 93’s processes, and they conducted more than 200 interviews of District 93 personnel. Soon ILPEx will provide District 93 with a feedback report that will point out our strengths and potentially recognize our efforts towards excellence but most importantly point us towards organizational opportunities for improvement. We’ll use these OFIs to improve our services and the education we provide our students. Stakeholders will find a copy of the feedback report at www. ccsd93.com once we receive it. A copy of District 93’s application can be found now under the “District” tab.

SOUND OFF

Many thanksgivings

No respect for money, vote My friend just told me that the Glen Ellyn Park District is going to spend $3,500 to conduct a survey to find out why people voted against the pool. I don’t get it. It was a landslide vote. We told them that we want to stop the massive debt and spending. We want lower taxes. They should focus on the more modest goals of preserving and maintaining parks. This really irks me. Have they no respect for our money nor our vote? Obviously, they just want to find a way to build the pool that they wanted, even though the rest of us don’t.

High-speed traffic on Berkley Avenue

adno=S0247140

I just wanted to reiterate on what someone said about West Avenue and the traffic that happens there. As a resident of Berkley Avenue by St. Charles Road and York High School, we experience the same thing – people drive back and forth really fast at rush hour traffic. People need to remember that it’s a residential area. It has to be addressed and the police have done nothing about it.

I’d like to sound off for my thankfulness. I’m thankful for all the parents and students who make sacrifices to send their children to college to be doctors, engineers, scientists – everything that makes our lives easier today, especially our health. I’m thankful for the wheel – don’t know who invented it, but where would we be without it? I’m thankful for indoor plumbing and drinkable clean water. I’m thankful for air conditioning and heating. For friends and

family. For people who rescue animals. I can’t imagine the person I would be without my dog, who makes me a whole human being. Thank you to all the honest people out in the world and the guardians who look after us. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving.

The only person on COD’s board who has the guts to represent taxpayers is Kathy Hamilton. She should be praised. Instead, the board censured her, adding unsubstantiated accusations of libel, slander, fraud, threats, misrepresentation, financial harm to the institution by degrading its reputation – really everything they could dream up in their thinly veiled threat to sue her for being righteous. This is bullying and intimidation and it’s disgusting. Vote out the three incumbents this spring and get Dianne McGuire and Chair Erin Birt forced out, by court order if necessary. They are a disgrace to COD and they’ve embarrassed all of us with national attention for their abuses. Let’s restore COD’s – and our own – reputation by replacing the board with more independent voices.

Semitrailer crashes into home in Bartlett-Streamwood area

SCHNEIDER IS HIRING TRUCK DRIVERS!

BARTLETT – Emergency personnel responded Monday after a semitrailer struck two vehicles, left the road and crashed into a town house, according to a Bartlett Police Department news release. The Bartlett police department and fire protection district were called about 2:40 p.m. to Oak Avenue and Lake Street to investigate the incident, the release stated. The trailer was traveling east on Lake Street when it hit one vehicle and then another, according to the release. It then struck a corner unit in The Oaks subdivision in Streamwood. As of Tuesday, the driver of the semitrailer was in critical condition at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, said Bartlett police Sgt. Geoffrey Pretkelis. It is believed the crash was caused by a medical condition. There were no additional injuries as a result of the incident, the release stated.

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Some of the faces may have changed but the results were the same this fall for Molly Haggerty and her St. Francis volleyball teammates. Three seasons in a Spartans uniform and three state championships for the junior outside hitter, Nebraska recruit and Glen Ellyn resident. “Last year was obviously awesome playing with my sister [Maddie] and those great seniors, and this year was awesome too,” Haggerty said. “I’ve played with Mary Boken since I was 12 years old. [State] was our last match playing with each other and it meant a lot to win a state championship.” One of the biggest differences this fall was being an upperclassmen for the first time. “I’ve always looked up to my sister and the seniors on the team,” said the junior, who was second on the team in kills her freshman year behind Maddie Haggerty before leading the Spartans in that category each of the past two seasons. “Being an upperclassman is different, you have to be a leader on the court.” Along with being more vocal, Molly Haggerty’s allaround game has continued to evolve after growing up as a setter. In addition to 406 kills this season, she added 169 digs, 54 blocks and 21 aces. “I have matured a lot,” she said. “Defensively, I’ve gotten more practice and I’m getting more chances with passing. I’m not just focusing on being an offensive weapon but also trying to be a defensive weapon.”

Led by Haggerty’s 16 kills, the Spartans won the match and went on to win a third straight state title. St. Francis coach Peg Kopec has had a front row seat to see Haggerty’s progression. “Molly is a very high-level athlete,” Kopec said. “I have watched her skills broaden. She now does so much more than the basics. She excels in all skills of the game. I have enjoyed watching her growth as a person. She has expanded both her leadership and personal skills before our very eyes.” Her talents drew a lot of interest from major collegiate programs but that decision is al-
