DuPage County Stormwater Management hopes to receive federal grant money at the end of this year to fund projects designed to mitigate flooding in the watershed of the East Branch DuPage River. As part of the grant application process, stormwater management has reached out to stakeholders through a number of meetings in communities, including one hosted Monday in Lombard, for input on a draft version of the East Branch DuPage River Watershed Resiliency Plan. The plan, if it receives approval from both the DuPage County Board’s Stormwater Committee and the entire board in March, will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of the first phase of a two-part application process, said Anthony Charlton, director of stormwater management. Charlton said a total of $1 billion worth of grant money is up for grabs, with a limit of $500 million given to any one agency. Although the resiliency plan was factored into the grant process, Charlton said plans like this are routinely created by stormwater management. “We don’t want the message out there that if we don’t get HUD grant funding, this process comes to a halt,” he said. “This is something we’ll continue to move forward with as our normal course of business.” Eligible applicants for HUD grant funds must have experienced a severe weather event between 2011 and 2013, Charlton said. That event for DuPage County was the April 2013 flood, which forced hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes and damaged thouGraphic provided by DuPage County Stormwater Management sands of properties. To move on to the next phase of the DuPage County Stormwater Management is seeking public input on a plan to mitigate grant application process, the county flooding in the watershed of the East Branch DuPage River (pictured).

When my kids ask me a question that I don’t know the answer to, I say “Google it.” Google has become my go-to for every topic, query, curiosity, recipe, address, everything! When I was a kid, I sought my answers from encyclopedias, but I can’t confirm what they said about recycling because the topic was never on my radar. It was not something my school or parents taught. Today, I think recycling is becoming natural to most of us. I mean to say that we think about it, but we are not reminded to think about it. We just do it because we have realized the need to take ownership and better care of

DuPage residents will get a chance to stroll through more than a dozen countries and learn more about them – and their cuisine – today at the annual 4-H International Night. Thirteen clubs from around the county will present exhibits on the cultures, people, geography and more of countries in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe. “I think this is helpful in learning about other people, cultures, and eventually these kids are going to have to deal with people from all walks of life, so they might as well learn a little bit about them too,” DuPage 4-H Program Coordinator Christine Birns said. The event features 4-H’ers from all the clubs age groups, with Cloverbuds as young as 5 and the adult women of the associated Home and Community Educators as part of the 4-H Passport to the World project. The $1 suggested donation admission for ages 6 and older gains access to special ethnic food and desserts, entrance to see several skits and prizes for those who pay attention to the special presentations at each station. The event also serves as a major fundraiser for the DuPage County 4-H Foundation, bringing in between 400 and 500 people to the DuPage County Fairgrounds each year, according to foundation Vice President Andrea Swanson. The admission fees, raffle items and silent auctions help support 4-H programs in DuPage County as well as provide scholarships to local 4-H club members going to college. But Swanson said as a parent of three former DuPage 4-H members, the real value of the event was the knowledge and leadership it offers. She said the club allowed all three of her children to explore the interests they eventually pursued in college. “People have the mistaken idea that

Gorman said Lombard has taken progressive action on flood mitigation by introducing regulations that require homes of a certain footprint to manage stormwater on site or convey it safely to a swale. “We think, frankly, other towns might learn from us,” he said. Charlton said HUD is looking specifically for flood mitigation efforts that can be replicated in similar environments and not just within the East Branch watershed. Once the first phase of the application, which is due March 26, is submitted, and if the county receives word from HUD that it has successfully established its unmet needs, stormwater management will then work on specific project proposals to be submitted as part of the second and final phase of the application process, Charlton said. Those projects may include the construction of a new levy in Lisle, for example, and the installation of floodproof linings in sanitary sewer systems to prevent water backing up into homes, Charlton said. The county then will learn whether or not its grant application was successful in December. But even if the county isn’t successful in its bid for federal grant funds, Charlton said the HUD application requirements have proven to be successful outreach tools and future planning efforts by the department will replicate this one. By asking residents to share their thoughts on flood-related issues, “they feel more a part of the process, and the plan that will come out of this ultimately is something that has a lot of their input,” Charlton said.

other things that parents can expect are for their children to learn to make the right choices, and achieve ahead of their peers. Service to the local and global communities is also a vital part of formation at St. Petronille School. Each year Service takes the older students off campus to Churchill Park in Glen Ellyn to do restoration work, and out to Aurora to prepare and pack foods for an organization called Feed My Starving Children. Closer to “home” an ongoing and in-house food drive called “Friday Foods” sees the gathering and delivery of non-perishable food items each week to the neighboring Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. It is this type of service project that teaches students that hunger is a problem not only during the holiday season, but all year ‘round; and that serving others is a practice that should be built in to our day-to-day lives. As the logo proclaims, St. Petronille School, like other Catholic Schools, does teach more! Their formula for success seems to lie in the partnership between parents and teachers; and the climate of faith in which the educational, spiritual, and leadership formation process takes place.

t. Petronille School is a kindergarten through Grade 8 Catholic Elementary School. Located within walking distance of the downtown area of Glen Ellyn and the Station for the west line of the Metra train, St. Petronille School is serving more than 540 students and their families this year. “St. Pet’s” educates the whole child, and serves students of a wide variety of learning styles. An important element in the education of students here is the prevailing emphasis on leadership formation through service to others. St. Petronille School is one of the 48 Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Joliet, which spans a geographical area from Bensenville to Kankakee. Their logo boasts the words, “We Teach More.” And because more is taught here, parents are able to expect more. Beyond teaching Math, Science, Social Studies, and many other advanced and core courses, teachers also lead meaningful and open classroom discussions about faith, values, and spirituality, providing children with an early opportunity to explore things about the world and themselves—things not found in textbooks and lesson plans. t. Joseph School, 4832 Highland Avenue in Downers Grove, is now enrolling students for the 2015-16 school year. “The best way to get to know us is to take a tour,” said Principal Rita Stasi. “We’re proud to share our tradition of excellence in Catholic education, and invite parents to take a look at our award-winning Pre-K through 8th Grade program. We have many wonderful stories to share about our students’ achievements this year – both in and out of the classroom.” Based on demand, the school is opening additional preschool morning sessions for 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds beginning in August 2015; there are spots now available in these popular classes. Since Pre-K3, Pre-K4 and Kindergarten fill up quickly, parents are encouraged to register as soon as possible to reserve a place for their child. St. Joseph’s enrollment has continued to climb over the past few years. The
school offers a personalized approach to learning that’s faith-centered, academically challenging, interactive, and puts children on a path to success – academically, spiritually and socially. Small class sizes, Spanish in all grades, no-cut sports, extracurricular activities and Extended Care are popular features of the school’s program. “It’s been an exciting year,” Principal Stasi indicated. “With continued growth, we’ve been able to provide many enhancements to our facilities and technology program, including a new Computer Lab, LRC and laptops. We’ve also launched a Kindergarten Tablet Pilot, Junior High Chrome Book Pilot, WiFi throughout the school and Google Classroom collaboration. Parents, students and teachers are really excited about these additions.” Please call Julie at 630-969-4306 to schedule a tour or shadow day, or learn more at www.stjosephdg.org/school.

recent ranking of America’s best careers bodes well for students at Midwestern University. US News and World Report recently published its “100 Best Jobs of 2015” listing, ranking careers based on a combination of factors that include financial compensation, the balance between professional challenge and stress levels, and opportunities within the various fields. Five of the top 15 careers represented on the list are part of Midwestern University’s graduate healthcare education offerings, including dentistry, which was ranked first overall thanks to salary, low unemployment, and work-life balance. Midwestern’s College of Dental Medicine-Illinois is one of only three dental schools in Illinois. In addition to dentistry, other Midwestern programs that ranked in the US News and World Report list’s top 15 careers include osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, and occupational therapy. Since Midwestern’s founding in 1900, the University has gradually expanded its healthcare career offerings, creating programs in 10 colleges across two campuses in Illinois and Arizona. On the Downers Grove Campus, Midwestern University currently offers the following degree programs:

Having those goals, adjusting, and learning how to set them can help you achieve them. Ryan Giuliano started from not knowing how to swim in college to becoming the top ranked amateur Ironman athlete in the world in 2015. CHAMPAIGN – A week earlier, Oak Park’s Jason Renteria handed Austin Gomez his first loss of the season. But the Glenbard North sophomore exacted his revenge when it mattered most, beating the fellow sophomore Saturday in the championship match at 113 pounds to claim a Class 3A state title. He did so in thrilling fashion, engineering a takedown in the final 10 seconds to record a 4-3 win. Coming into the tourney with a record of 46-1, Gomez reached the 50-win plateau with four straight victories. He won his opening match by a 14-8 margin and then notched 8-5 and 16-6 decisions to reach the final. Gomez wasn’t the only Panther to reach the awards podium. Senior Luke Greenberg finished as the runner-up at 195 pounds. He picked up a pin in his first match and then followed with hard-fought 6-3 and 4-3 wins to advance to the championship, where he dropped a 7-2 decision to Timothy Young of East Aurora. Fellow senior Kirk Johansen placed third at 106, ended his tournament with a 3-0 victory over Darvell Flagg of Joliet West. Johansen’s only loss was a 4-3 ultimate tiebreaker setback in the second round while the senior also had two pins and a major decision. Phil Partipilo won one match at 132 while Dillon Warnecke tallied one victory at 220. Also competing at state were Patrick Augustyn (120), Michael Milan (126), Tom Czernek (160) and Colton Wegner (182).

One bright spot for the team has been Nick Lavere, who tops Glenbard North with his 11.8 points-per-game average. PALATINE – All three Glenbard North gymnasts that competed at state advanced to the event finals Feb. 21 at Palatine High School. Senior Katie Murphy had the highest individual finish by placing seventh on floor exercise with a 9.450. After coming to the Panthers from club, the state experience was new to Murphy. “It was my first time competing, so I didn’t really know what to expect, but it was a lot different than club gymnastics,” Murphy said. “I liked how they did each event at one time. It made it more dramatic.” Murphy also competed in the preliminaries of the uneven

ransitioning to a senior living community can be filled with mixed emotions from everyone involved. You may have many questions. Is it really necessary at this time? Will we get the help and care from the staff when we need it? Will my loved one like the other residents and make new friends...? The answer to all these questions is yes. New friends are made all the time. We witness it every day here at Lexington Square. Most caring communities take time to ensure their caregivers are extremely helpful and at your service. Caring for an aging parent is one of the most difficult tasks you can ever undertake. An illness or debilitating hip injury can lead to your parent needing help with laundry, bills, grocery shopping, or getting to and from medical appointments. Your relationship with your family and friends begins to suffer. Worse of all, the relationship with your parent suffers. Once you become a care giver the parent child relationship takes a backseat. Adult children caring for their aging parents are becoming more popular as well. According to Pew Research, 30% of adult children today say their parent needs help handling their affairs. However, there are steps you can take to make the task of being a caregiver much easier.

New Solutions to your Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy?
Neuropathy Recovery I Workshop
FREE
f you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms- numbness, tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain, then read on. A new breakthrough treatment could change your life. Neuropathy can affect every part of your life - walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, your ability to enjoy your relationships and so much more. If you have tired “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica, Neurotin or other meds) without getting the results you want then this may be the most important information that you ever read. There is a simple reason that most treatments fail, because at best they only cover up your symptoms and do not help your damaged nerves. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects people in every walk of life. It is estimated that 20 million Americans and 60% of diabetics suffer from this disorder. There are many kinds of neuropathy, the symptoms of which include burning, tingling, weakness, numbness, paralysis, and dull to excruciating pain - especially in the hands and feet. Although many neuropathies have no known causes, neuropathy is often associated with other conditions. Examples are: Diabetes, shingles, toxins, autoimmune disorders, bulging discs that compress on nerves, spinal stenosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and poor nutrition. Statin drugs and chemotherapy can also cause neuropathy. For the last three years Dr. Susan Kelenyi, DC of Glen Ellyn, IL has worked extensively with peripheral neuropathy patients. Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. And this is where Dr. Kelenyi steps in. Of the many causes of peripheral neuropathies”, says Dr. Kelenyi, “ a major one comes from a metabolic condition. You cannot drug your way out of a metabolic condition. It requires a change in lifestyle.” Dr. Kelenyi says, “Diet is crucial when addressing peripheral neuropathy, especially in diabetics and autoimmune disorders. Harmful foods to be avoided include alcohol, sugar, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas of all types, foods sprayed with pesticides, and trans-fatty acids. Sweeteners and additives contained in diet soda and processed foods such as MSG and aspartame can negatively impact the nervous system.” As a Board Eligible Chiropractic Neurologist, Dr. Kelenyi performs specific metabolic and neurologic tests to help determine what is causing the problem. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. If jerking is involved then it can be as much a problem in the brain due to trans-neural degeneration as it is in the peripheral nerve. A thorough and comprehensive exam ensures an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Kelenyi states that her peripheral neuropathy recovery program is a combination of different cutting edge techniques and protocols. “We use revolutionary breakthrough protocols in the treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy… one of the therapies offered is Horizontal Therapy which is the latest, breakthrough in the science of electro-medicine and the most advanced and effective form of bioelectric treatment available to date. I’m very proud to be the first in the area to offer this to my patients ...pain management without drugs or surgery to get lasting results.” Additional therapies may include: oxygen, vibration, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy along with brain balance therapies to create a layered approach to “wake up” the nerves so they can function again and re-educate nerve pathways that have gone “hay-wire”. Dr. Kelenyi says, “Our solutions are non-drug, non-surgical approaches, that are researched based and based on prior clinical success. The reason we achieve excellent outcomes is because we take both a metabolic and neurological approach in our program.” She says it’s a very rewarding way of practicing. “We get chronically ill people coming from all over the Chicagoland area, even out of state, to our clinic. The most important thing for these patients is results. We get results.”
FRIDAY, MARCH 6TH AT 11:00AM
Ask yourself… • Has your condition affected every part of your life? • Have you tried “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurotin®, or other medications) without getting the results you want? • Do you suffer with other secondary symptoms such as falling, dexterity, muscle atrophy, etc.? • Would you rather ix the underlying problem rather than cover it up with drugs?
Topics to be discussed • What is and what are the main causes for Peripheral Neuropathy • Diabetes & Peripheral Neuropathy • If you are taking “statin” drugs - what your doctor doesn’t tell you could hurt you • If your nerves are damaged what does that mean for the rest of your body • Why your lab results do not tell the whole story • How you can live pain free with a clinically proven program
RSVP Required. Seating is Limited. Call
