Bloomingdale man wins ‘The Biggest Loser’ By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com Bloomingdale resident Toma Dobrosavljevic was the big winner on the Jan. 29 finale of the latest season of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” Dobrosavljevic, who grew up in Addison and competed in several sports at Addison Trail High School, lost 171 pounds to win the show, which featured athletes, including former Olympians, this season. Dobrosavljevic, 33, auditioned for the show as a way to fulfill a promise he made to his father, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma leukemia at age 54. When his dad got sick, Dobrosavljevic told him he would get healthy again after becoming less active and gaining weight when he started working full time. But after his dad died, Dobrosavljevic moved in with his mom to help as the family coped with their devastating loss, and he continued to gain weight. “I kept my promise to my dad,” Dobrosavljevic said during the finale. “It’s been nine years since he passed, and I can finally say tonight, mission accomplished.” When Dobrosavljevic started the show, he weighed 336 pounds. He showed off his trim, 165-pound figure during the finale and shared

NEWS BRIEF Infrequent lottery player claims $1 million prize in Itasca ITASCA – Some people play the lottery every day and never win much. Laura Egel of Itasca, on the other hand, said she buys an instant ticket three or four times a year. And now she’s a million-dollar winner. Egel bought a $5 Millionaire ticket from the 7-Eleven at 220 N. Walnut St. in Itasca, according to a news release Jan. 28 from the Illinois Lottery. The $1 million she’ll get is the top prize players can win in that game. The 7-Eleven that sold the ticket will get a bonus of $10,000. The release said Egel plans to share her winnings with family and invest.

of January through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Keating said, as a part of a federal program that supports public education for homeless children. DuPage volunteers do their best not only to report those they see and fill out surveys on their behalf but also give them small gift cards for meals and connect them to other area shelters, said Gail Hoffman, director of the Wheaton Youth Outreach. “It’s a good value, not just for HUD, but we can also tell people that even if they’re not personally able to use the resources out there tonight, they can in the future,” Hoffman said. Those who agree to the
survey provide information on their genders – including transsexual – ethnicity, veterans status, whether they are parenting children or have been in a rehab or detox program. All that is valuable information for those trying to figure out who make up these homeless communities. During the past several years, local police departments have become vital to the process, Adams said, pointing them to areas the unsheltered could be staying. Some, such as West Chicago Police Sgt. Mike Zepeda, who volunteered to lead Adams and Fox around that night, even knew many by name. Even a few years ago, that
wasn’t the case, Adams said. “They’ve been asking us how they can help,” he said. “We’ve been doing this long enough that they know us and know we’re not trying to embarrass them or anything. It’s an issue that everyone needs to fight for.” By 1 a.m. Thursday morning, Adams and Fox were shining flashlights and headlights down Wheaton alleyways, sharing a chocolate bar pick-me-up and trying – unsuccessfully – to wake a man asleep in his car. “Our policy is usually not to wake them,” Adams said. “I think that is prudent here.” The two would drive up and down the city’s Front Street, going down alleys many don’t look twice at and

And as good as the trip can be for funneling care where it was needed most or directing people to places where they could get a warm bed for the night, the count is good for those who volunteer as well, Fox said. “It helps you remember the first time you saw someone sleeping in his spot in a parking garage,” she said. “I had some 25 years of experience working with people in poverty, but it’s different to experience it on a cold, dark night.”

SOUND OFF Signs at college too gaudy
How to Sound Off
College of DuPage should not erect a sign in honor of the much reviled Robert Breuder. COD already has way too many gaudy white building signs that look like advertising for fast food joints, not an institution of higher learning. But those were [Robert] Breuder’s idea, too.
Want to contribute to Sound Off? Call 331-481-6089 or email mslsoundoff@shawmedia.com.
COD needs a new lawyer In regards to the College of DuPage’s buyout of the president, I worked at a community college for more than 20 years and I’ve lived in the College of DuPage district for more than 38 years. I think where the big problem is, is the lawyers for the College of DuPage should have been more astute and could have prevented a problem with the Open Meetings Act. What needs to be done is that the college needs to get a new lawyer.

As a taxpayer, I would appreciate it if this black color was replaced by a more optimistic color: like green, orange, white. Anything but black with dark tinted windows and excessive lighting. There are dangerous criminals out there, but come on police, most of us are law-abiding. Isn’t a gun intimidating enough?

The team warmed up for the state series by capturing their 17th consecutive Dupage Valley Conference title behind nine individual champions Jan. 31. The Panthers scored 301 points at the league meet, easily outdistancing runner-up Wheaton North (176.5). Kirk Johansen was victorious by a 15-2 margin at 106 pounds and was fol-
