GLEN ELLYN – Budget concerns and classroom initiatives were the focus of a candidate forum Saturday for candidates of the Glenbard Township High School District 87 School Board. The forum, which was hosted by the League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn, featured all six candidates for the board. The six candidates for the District 87 board are Margaret DeLaRosa, Brian Loftus, Martha Mueller, Mary Ozog, L.J. Spasovski and Tom Trefilek. The candidates are running for three open spots on the board. Trefilek and Ozog are incumbents seeking re-election. Board member Rose Malcolm did not file for re-election. Some of the highlights for discussion included the biggest issues candidates felt the district faces, priorities to help reduce the district’s budget in the face of budget cuts and the emphasis on Advanced Placement courses.

Glenbard Township High School District 87 Board of Education candidates Martha Mueller (from left), Brian Loftus and Mary Ozog joke together before the start of the League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn’s candidate forum Saturday at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center. Ellyn for 27 years, has been a member of the district’s finance committee for the past five years. She helped come up with the plan to fund the district’s Master Facility Plan, and seeing that come to fruition is what she sees as the natural next step. She said her ties to the administrators and her experience being in the school also gives her an advantage as a potential candidate. DeLaRosa said the rollback of state income taxes and the potential shift of pension costs to the district are two things the board is going to have to

keep an eye on. “That’s something we’re all going to have to deal with as school districts if that occurs,” she said. DeLaRosa said she would be an advocate for more discussion about pushing back the start of the school day. She acknowledged there are difficulties but felt the board should at least be having conversations about the proposal. “We cannot educate our kids the same way we were educated because the world is different,” she said. She also felt the school is putting too much emphasis on AP classes. She hopes the district doesn’t add classes just for the district’s sake but actually does things that will be beneficial to individual students. “It’s good to push your kids to level up … but let’s not have a cookie-cutter approach to all of our students,” she said.

Loftus, who has a background in business, feels he can bring a fresh perspective to the board. He hopes to help innovate the way things are done and challenge the board to improve. “We need to keep our high level of education,” said Loftus, of Glen Ellyn. “We need to keep pushing and not become complacent.” Loftus said he wants to make a push to provide more policy change as a board rather than having the superintendent bring suggested changes to the board. Loftus said the board needs to be wary of potential budget cuts in the near future and has to do everything it can to avoid the state taking away property tax disbursements, which make up 85 percent of the district’s budget. He also agreed it would not be prudent for the district to consider a later starting time for high schools. He said the number of extracurricular activities results in students being spread thin. “I don’t necessarily think that starting later would be an option,” he said.

“We have worked to make sure we had a good balance,” Most said. Central DuPage Hospital opened its doors Sept. 16, 1964 – the same day John Messitt began working as a doctor. Messitt, who was one of the honorees highlighted in the cafeteria postings, was an obstetrician with the hospital until last year, when he retired. “As a physician, I loved medicine,” he said. “I consider myself a lucky guy to be able to do what I love to do my whole life.” Messitt, of Wheaton, said he was finishing up his residency at Cook County Hospital when he was approached by some doctors about joining Central DuPage. WINFIELD – Central DuPage Hospital is in the midst of a yearlong celebration of its 50th anniversary. Hospital Vice President of Medical Affairs Kevin Most said the hospital is celebrating a new person every week, whose picture and story are published in the hospital cafeteria each Tuesday. Most said it provides a good opportunity for people to learn about those involved with the history of the organization. “It’s that sense of community in the cafeteria where the discussions are,” he said. Most said the marketing team thought for a long time about how to address the 50th anniversary of the hospital, and they eventually decided to make it a celebration of the people who helped them get to that point. The honorees include physicians, administrators, nurses, volunteers and more. “You cannot thank every single volunteer, yet we have as many volunteers as we can who put in a lot of time here,” Most said. The honorees will continue to be announced through September.

It’s not too late to weigh in on the future of Carol Stream Work on Carol Stream’s new comprehensive plan continues this spring, and there are still a few opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ideas that will help shape the village’s future. Staff from the village and Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning began work on a new plan after the village received an award of Local Technical Assistance from CMAP in 2014. The first phase of the project included the collection of data and the active solicitation of feedback at numerous community outreach events, including a public open house hosted in April 2014. Using the data and information received, CMAP,

Residents and stakeholders who were unable to attend the March 11 workshop can provide input on their priorities for the future of the village by visiting the MetroQuest online survey at carolstream.metroquest.com by April 6. This interactive, web-based tool allows people to spend just a few minutes sharing their thoughts about opportunities and needed improvements in Carol Stream. An open house at which the public can review and comment on the draft will be scheduled for early this summer. “It turned out that my residency finished in July, I went on vacation, I opened an office in downtown Wheaton, and I opened it simultaneous with the open of the hospital,” Messitt said. The hospital has changed a lot in 50 years. Before that, the facility originated as a family-operated rest home for two years before becoming the Chicago-Winfield Tuberculosis Sanatorium in 1907. In the 1960s, there was a void of hospital services in the area – the two closest hospitals were in Elmhurst and Geneva. Once medicines were developed that could fight tuberculosis, the sanatorium was no longer needed. The Wheaton Kiwanis Committee explored the possibility of establishing a hospital nearby in 1957, and ground broke in June 1963. When the hospital opened, it was a 113-bed facility staffed with 60 doctors.

Messitt said the doctors originally rotated as head of the emergency room. Today, it has 350 beds and 1,100 doctors. “We’re no longer a community hospital,” Most said. “We provide as much, if not more care than the major hospitals.” The hospital has had several renovations and expansions since it opened. Most, who has worked there for 25 years, said his current office would have been a premium parking spot when he first started. Messitt said he has many fond memories from working at the hospital, but that he always especially enjoyed its groundbreaking ceremonies. “It was kind of exciting because it was brand new,” he said. “We were breaking ground on a brand new addition to the hospital.” The hospital will have a weeklong celebration in September as a “culmination to the entire year,” Most said, complete with a black-tie gala to celebrate the honorees.
