Ready to vote?
nlurz@shawmedia.com Voters looking to avoid long lines during the April 7 consolidated election can now find their local polling site and cast their ballots early. From Monday through April 4, certain polling places across Illinois, including in Cook and DuPage counties, are open for early voting for municipal and park, library, school and fire district officials In the last 2013 consolidated election, more than 40,000 in Cook and 10,000 in DuPage took advantage of the early option. When early voting was originally passed in Illinois in 2005, the hope was to increase voter turnout, said Robert Saar, DuPage County Election Commission executive director. In that regard, it has been fairly unsuccessful in both presidential and nonpresidential elections. Turnout in consolidated elections in both counties has dropped since 2005, with only about 19 percent of registered voters in DuPage and suburban Cook casting votes in 2013. Cook County Clerk David Orr said he believes it’s still too soon to tell how successful early voting has been but

believes it is valuable. And although it has not brought the higher turnouts hoped for when the state adopted the practice in 2005, it still remains valuable, Saar said. “What it does is take the pressure off the polling places on Election Day,” he said. That means fewer locations need to be open on Election Day, and fewer election judges and fewer resources are needed throughout the season. Saar said DuPage has reduced its Election Day polling locations by almost two-thirds since the change, down to 260 from 728 in 2005. Orr also said local consolidated elections without big name governor or presidential elections and that are filled with uncontested races – in Cook, about 63 percent are uncontested in

2015 – would always mean lower turnouts. Saar and Orr both said the period gave flexibility and opportunity for those who might have to work on Election Day, those with disabilities or transportation limitations, or voters who just want to get it over with. “Some people really like it and never really go back to the polling place on Election Day,” Saar said. To vote early, registered voters can visit any early voting site in their home county and must bring a valid government-issued photo ID. There are no limitations to who can vote early. Those who are not registered can still do so through April 4 through grace period voting, in which the person must register at a designated location and vote at the same time. Local early voting stations and hours of operations can be found at www.cookcountyclerk.com/elections/ earlyvoting and www.dupageco.org/ election/voting/37061. “The bottom line is that it has proved to be successful and that people like it,” Orr said. “By voting on Election Day they can go somewhere closer, and if they go early it is farther but on their own time, and I think that is valuable.”

GLENBARD TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 87 BOARD
YOUR WEEKEND FORECAST
What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? The most pressing issues … are reduced state funding and pension obligation shift from the state to local districts. The rollback of the state income tax from 5 percent to 3.75 percent makes it highly probable general state aid and categorical dollars (special education funding) will be reduced and/or payments delayed. The current legislative proposal to shift the cost of pensions to local districts may alleviate the state from its obligations but will greatly impact Illinois school district’s operations, and Glenbard will not be spared. Margaret What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? My fiveyear tenure as a community member on the District 87 finance committee, regular DeLaRosa board meeting attendance and working knowledge of our budget and financial Glen Ellyn plans makes me good fit and uniquely qualified for a seat on the District 87 board. During my membership on the finance committee, we have achieved financial solvency; streamlined processes; developed a textbook rental program; reviewed and renewed contracts for transportation, energy, food service; and framed a master facility plan.

What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? Policy – The board should provide the superintendent with the toolbox of policy to run the district. The board sets policy and the administration implements policy. Technology – We need to use technology to innovate. This means investing dollars to operate more efficiently, working within budgets that are relatively flat and not running business as usual. Funding – The state of Illinois District Report Card shows 85 percent of revenue comes from taxes, whereas the average is 61 percent. The board may need to consider new revenue sources such as partnering with district businesses, Brian Edward village or community programs, and parent organizations. Loftus What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? Good Glen Ellyn school boards know they are in the business of education. They talk about education, study the needs of students and society and base their decisions on those needs. As a seasoned and experienced business professional, I will bring the business side to the business of education. I will bring experience in policy development and a strategic vision utilizing technology. I will continue the current fiscal responsibility of today’s board and also bring a strong background in contract proposal and negotiation when the teacher’s contract comes up for renewal during the upcoming term.

GLENBARD TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 87 BOARD – CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? D-87 continues to maintain for the last eight years the highest financial recognition status with ISBE for financial success! But there may be new fiscal obstacles which D-87 has no control: If the pension funding is placed upon the individual school districts or if a change in the method in disbursing funds among the different district occurs or if state and federal funds to education will decrease causes concerns. Let’s not forget the continued creation of unfunded mandates. A new teachers union contract should be based on students’ successes and financial strength to attract Tom Trefilek and retain the best teachers. Lombard What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? With eight years of experience as ... a District 87 board member, I have been recognized as a master board member by the Illinois school board association ... Also, I served on the finance committee and chaired of the student performance and achievement committee during these eight years and served as District 87 delegate to the IASB statewide assembly. Also, I participated in the last teachers union negotiations. ... With my education and experience is both in the business and as a college educator and coach, I realize the importance of a high school education. All students and community reap the benefits when the schools are successful.
What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? Keeping everybody happy while staying under budget. Making sure our students, teachers, administrators and staff have the best opportunities, environment and structured education available to them. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? Driving a school bus for the past seven years while volunteering throughout the Glenbard communities, you interact and hear a lot about what is important to people. These Martha experiences have given me the advantage of being at the core of why we have schools – the kids. I hear what is important to them and their families. I hear their Mueller concerns and frustrations. I see what is being overlooked. I feel I could adequately Lombard address these issues. I believe much of the district success is due to the support from our communities who recognize the benefits to all when our students succeed. What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? The most pressing issue facing the school board in the next four years is our budget. ... Funding to us from the state of Illinois has still not regained 2007 pre-Great Recession levels. We may be looking at state of Illinois pension reform, which could shift some of the burden of retiree pensions to local districts. There is also a statewide discussion about funding inequity, which could cause us to lose some of our autonomy over the local property taxes, which are our main source of funding. The next four years Mary will be a rough ride, but as of today, the District 87 board is a very functional, cooperative group of elected officials. FitzGerald What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? I am Ozog now in my fourth year as a board member, as well as my 28th year as a parent. Glen Ellyn Both experiences have made me a board member who is not afraid to question information and policies put before the board. ... I have four years of board experience, working with various members of staff, leadership and fellow board members, which helps me understand and work through all the issues facing the district. My 28 years as a parent, shepherding four kids through high school, has given me a parent (and student’s) perspective on how policies actually affect our kids.

D-93 students teach tech to retirees through partnership Community Consolidated School District 93’s Board of Education and I believe it is essential to provide our students with leadership and service opportunities as part of their overall educational experience. As District 93 has become more proficient with its use of technology, we have created a unique opportunity for the district to give back to our community by utilizing our students, staff and technology resources to help teach retirees how to use technology. Twice each month, starting in December 2014, members of the district’s technology department began conducting technology classes for residents at Windsor Park Retirement Community in Carol Stream using a mobile tech-

By February, District 93’s pupils had become the teachers of this course, as students from one of the district’s elementary or middle schools began visiting Windsor Park for each class and working directly with the retirees to lend their technological expertise. It is amazing to see our young students teach and mentor Windsor Park’s retirees, many of whom are eight or nine times their age, on the use of technology.
I have been impressed by how comfortable the retirees are to have children teach them how to become digital citizens. The classes began by covering the most basic computer functions. As the retirees become more advanced, our students and staff are continuing to help them to expand their technological horizons by teaching them how to navigate the Internet, use email and Facetime, download and share photos, create documents or spreadsheets, blog, and even navigate social media networks and consumer websites like eBay and Craigslist. This partnership is a win-win. It not only helps the retirees to become more tech savvy but allows them to gain an appreciation of the talents and resourc-

These residents have experienced so much and can give our students some amazing first-hand perspective on events and eras they learn about in class. As our partnership with Windsor Park continues to grow, we hope to connect the retirees with our students in additional meaningful ways, such as inviting them into our schools to tutor, read to students and even speak about historic events.

Police charge County Board member with DUI By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Longtime DuPage County Board member and Wheaton resident Grant Eckhoff was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol earlier this month. Eckhoff, 55, of the 200 block of North Erie Street, was arrested about 8:30 p.m. March 2 near his home at Bever- Grant ly Street and Manches- Eckhoff ter Road, according to a report from the Wheaton Police Department. He also was charged with operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Eckhoff’s attorney, Wheaton lawyer Harry Smith, said his client was initially pulled over for a traffic violation. He added that Eckhoff’s vehicle was insured but that he could not provide proof of insurance when asked. Smith said Eckhoff had no prior criminal history but confirmed he had been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in 1986 before the case was dismissed and expunged because of lack of probable cause. Smith also said Eckhoff intends to plead innocent and that there will be a status hearing on the case in April. Eckhoff, a Republican, has sat on the DuPage County Board as a District 4 representative since 2002 and was a member of the Wheaton City Council for four years before that. He won re-election for his seat in November, with his term expiring in late 2018.

The Glenbard Hockey Club celebrates Saturday after defeating Maine 4-3 in overtime at the United Center to capture the Blackhawk Cup.
Glenbard Hockey Club captures state championship By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – The headlines resonating from the Illinois high school hockey scene have long been dominated by the likes of New Trier and Loyola. But during the past four years, it is the Glenbard Hockey Club that is making quite a name for itself. Playing in the title game of the Blackhawk Cup in the combined division for the third time in the past four years, Glenbard captured its second state championship Sunday with a 4-3 overtime win against Maine at the United Center. A year ago, the team fell 3-0 to Waubonsie in the final.
Live video online
“This one was really special,” head coach Jason Hawkins said, “considering we lost 13 players from last year’s team and the six returners got their title after coming up short last year. It’s an accomplishment to get to the title game, especially at the U.C., but even sweeter to win it. It was a great way for our seniors to end their high school hockey career.” Sam Weiss [Glenbard South] netted the game-winner in the extra session, his second goal of the contest. Nikko Parisi [Glenbard East] also scored twice while Jim Bertane [Glenbard West] made 37 saves in goal. “We got off to a really sluggish start and Jimmy [Bertane] played out of his mind to keep the score close,” Hawkins said. “The first goal we got at the end
of the second period shot some life into us, and we finally found our game in the third and overtime. “To win in OT, in dramatic fashion, it sure is exciting but also a sense of relief once that puck went in. The boys worked hard all season, and to see them get rewarded for it was truly awesome to watch.” Glenbard finished the season with a 38-17-1 record, winning its past eight contests. Individually, Nick Pietro [Glenbard North] tallied 68 goals and 48 assists in 56 games, Weiss contributed 53 goals and 34 assists and Parisi totaled 22 goals and 45 assists. “I think what made this team so special is the resilience they showed all year and especially in this final game,”

Hawkins said. “They never gave up and left it all out there on the ice. No one really expected us to beat Rockford [in the semifinals] and get to the title game, but every player in the locker room believed in themselves.” The Glenbard hockey club is made up of players from Glenbard East, Glenbard North, Glenbard South and Glenbard West. “The title in 2012 really sparked this program and created excitement around it,” Hawkins said. “Instead of having to beg players to play, we had players coming to us wanting to play for Glenbard. And with our JV team making it to the Final Four this year, the future of our club is bright and we look forward to having success for years to come.”
