Glenbard Township High School District 87 will welcome two new Board of Education members and one returning incumbent in May. Six candidates vied for the board seats, but only three came out on top in the April 7 election. Newcomers Margaret DeLaRosa and Mar- Margaret tha Mueller won spots, DeLaRosa with DeLaRosa gaining about 23 percent of the vote (6,451 votes), and Mueller taking about 18 percent with 5,184, according to preliminary results from the DuPage County Election Com- Martha m i s s i o n . I n c u m b e n t Mueller Mary Ozog took 22 percent of the vote (6,177). Additional candi dates included challengers L.J. Spasovski and Brian Loftus, and incumbent Tom Trefilek. Issues facing the Mary Ozog district include the potential shift of pension costs to the district and controversy over whether the athletic code should be revised after a number of student athletes were suspended for attending a party where alcohol was present. Incumbent Ozog is happy to continue her work with the district and wants to focus on its long-term financial obligations. “We have a lot of ongoing work and I’m glad to continue doing that,” she said. “My number one goal is the same goal we’ve had, the continued fiscal solvency of the district.” Neither DeLaRosa nor Mueller could be reached for comment on election night, but in a public forum last month, they discussed their specific priorities.

Crabtree, Gambaiani and Vroman win District 200 seats By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Two incumbents and a familiar face to Community Unit School District 200 won seats on the district’s Board of Education on Tuesday, according to preliminary numbers from the DuPage County Election Commission. District 200 PTA President and first-time candidate Chris Crabtree Chris led the pack with 5,287 Crabtree votes on election night, with incumbent Jim Gambaiani taking a close second with 5,069 votes. Board Vice President Jim Vroman barely held on to his seat, beating challenger Judith Zapf by a scant 249 votes. Crabtree, who was previously a teacher in the district and has children in the school system, said Tuesday she was still trying to process the support and said she was humbled by the experience.
“I’ve made it very public that I was not running on any form of an agenda – I was running to continue to serve in a different capacity in the district,” she said. “I’ve always Jim been about kids first, Gambaiani that’s been my message the last nine years as I’ve been a leader in this district.” She will take the seat of longtime board member Rosemary Swanson, who decided not to run Jim Vroman for another term. Crabtree said her main focus as part of the board would first and foremost be continuing and expanding upon the district’s community engagement process, stressing the need to go out and meet the public – particularly those Photo by Nathan Lurz - nlurz@shawmedia.com whom do not have children in the disFirst-time candidates and friends Judith Zapf (left) and Chris Crabtree keep up with the trict.

But safety is more than general well-being, weather warnings and the ability to read signs. Safety training can save lives. Fountain View Fitness Center has certified 63 fitness employees in CPR/AED (cardiopulmonary

Training paid off when in 2014 a resident collapsed on the walking track and fitness supervisor Steve Erlenbaugh and his team used CPR and the AED to keep the man alive until emergency responders arrived. Obviously, safety training is the main focus of the Coral Cove Water Park. In the past two years, 150 lifeguard certifications, which include CPR/AED training, were issued. Also, 75 deck attendants received CPR training. Not including our lifeguards, we have more than 200 full-time and seasonal employees certified in CPR/AED. Park districts play an important role in the safety of the community. The police and fire departments, whose officers and firefighters may find themselves in precarious situations, are on another playing level; so I’ll just leave them in the loft and move on. Community organizations such as the park district, school districts, churches and village all contribute to public safety in many ways and assure me as a parent that we live in a town that values the safety of our children and residents. The Carol Stream Park District has posted signage at parks and facilities emphasizing safety awareness. A few examples are: No concealed carry (no guns in facilities/parks), no smoking

Although they had 12 candidates to choose from, they really only had two choices: They had a choice for reform or they had a choice for the status quo. They chose reform with all three positions they elected tonight.” Napolitano said one of the first tasks the slate will address is the need for a requested audit of state money spent at the school, which the college’s board has yet to take action on funding. “I definitely think that we need to work to approve the state audit,” he said. “I think we need to cooperate with all the investigations going on right now.” The election was one of the most controversial in the school’s history, as the board recently received criticism for approving a $763,000 buyout for Breuder and hiring a $250 per hour public relations firm for communications counsel. Bernstein underscored the vision of the slate at a previous forum. “Our vision is to provide our students with the skills and education to be competitive in a 21st century economy,” he said. “In order to do that, we have to stop the corruption, integrate the faculty and pay a good compensation to attract the best faculty.” Neither Mazzochi nor Bernstein responded to requests for comment on election night.

She said losing to Vroman by a few percentage points while seeing Crabtree win was a bittersweet moment on many levels. “I have worked with Jim Vroman

Panthers look to build off last year’s trip to state SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The first pitch has been thrown for area high school softball teams, many of which had successful postseason runs last spring. Here’s how things are shaping up for local teams this year:

spring with 13 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 34 RBIs. Campos, a Bradley recruit, batted nearly .350 with 17 doubles, four homers and 27 RBIs. Also back is Kayla Quanstrum, who played in 33 games as a freshman and now moves to shortstop. Kasey Boland takes over the No. 1 pitching role with the departure of Cece Dopart; Boland was 4-1 with an ERA of 1.58 in 31 innings as a junior. A newcomer to keep an eye on is freshman Trinity Medinah, who homered in her first high school at-bat and is currently hitting fourth in the order. “For this team, I think we will get better as the year goes on as they learn to play together and learn to click,” Glenbard North coach Josh Sanew said. “We are a work in progress. As long as we play smart and don’t beat ourselves, we should be OK. The biggest thing is we have to be good defensively and we have to get our bats going.” The Panthers have struggled offensively out of the gate, dropping three of their first four games. Glenbard North beat West Chicago 4-3 before losing 11-1 to Bartlett and 1-0 and 10-2 to York.
The team tied for first place in the DuPage Valley conference a year ago with Naperville Central. “Everyone should be pretty tough,” Sanew said. “I think it is one of those years where anyone can beat anyone.”
West Chicago Wildcats Coach: Kim Wallner 2014 record: 12-21 Top players NAME Ellie Braun Jenna Foreman Hannah Gehlhaar Kayla Goffinet Amy Goldsmith Tatiana Rich Jenny Wood
YEAR sr. sr. sr. sr. sr. sr. sr.
POSITION C/3B CF/P IF 2B/OF P/1B SS 1B/C
Outlook: West Chicago returns six starters and nine seniors this spring and as a result, expectations are high for the Wildcats after a 12-win campaign in 2014. A lot of the optimism can be tied to the team’s strength within the pitching circle as both Jenna Foreman and Amy Goldsmith give West Chicago a strong one-two punch. Foreman also doubles as the Wildcats center fielder while Goldsmith plays first base. Also back is shortstop
Tatiana Rich and catcher Ellie Braun as well as Kayla Goffinet, Jenny Wood and Hannah Gehlhaar. “We expect to be competitive in every game and are looking to be top three in the conference,” West Chicago coach Kim Wallner said. “The offense should be improved and we are looking to generate more runs this year. Both our pitchers are returning and have improved their pitches and location. And we should be strong defensively.” The team went 7-12 in their first season in the Upstate Eight conference and this spring, they move to River division.
