By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Although part of the grandstand will be closed, the DuPage County Fair Association promises the annual event will go on as planned. Buildings around the DuPage County Fairgrounds were shut down in January after a county-led assessment found several hundred building code violations. Jim McGuire, manager of the association, insisted the core of the building remained structurally sound and said the association already addressed more than half of the concerns through repairs or through follow-up inspections. “A lot of these things weren’t done right 27 years ago and weren’t noticed until the county came through,” he said. McGuire said the association prioritized work on facilities that were used for events during the winter and was on schedule to complete work on the remaining code issues, aside from the grandstand, well before the July 22 to 26 event. Deciding the best course of action for the grandstand and then completing the work would take longer than

a report from a county-led real estate task force, created by County Board Chairman Dan Cronin to look into the best future use of the fairgrounds. The county’s lease with the grounds expires in 2020, leading some county officials to wonder whether the fair should continue there. McGuire said the association is using funds recently freed up by the eventual dissolution of the DuPage Fair and Exposition Authority. The organization was charged with receiving and distributing annual payments from the Illinois Department of Agriculture to the DuPage Fair Association but was deemed an excess layer of government. By absorbing the authority’s reserves, the association received a $240,000 windfall, which is now being used to address problems the association had tried to address for years, McGuire said. “The mantra was that the fair is moving,” he said. “But now we have the opportunity to replace things and fix things we have been asking to do and improving the grounds.” McGuire said he didn’t think the association, county or any other entity had the resources to buy land, relocate and redevelop for the fair. So until they are told to leave in five years or that they have a future at the site, the association plans to continue its work, even in the face of possible state cutbacks, he said. However, the fair has been in the black the past several years and could stand alone without state funding if it needed to, McGuire said “We are changing because we want to stay here,” he said. “We want to redevelop what we have.”

CAROL STREAM – Every year marks a party-worthy milestone for Merle Phillips, who celebrated her 108th birthday earlier this month in Carol Stream. Born April 2, 1907, Phillips just missed the opportunity to live during three different centuries. She celebrated this year’s birthday with a party April 2 at Belmont Village Senior Living, where she lives. Festivities included the presentation of a corsage with 108 flowers, bingo and, of course, cake and gifts. An 11-time self-published author, Phillips started writing at age 72, according to a news release from Belmont Village. She still writes and exercises daily and is an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

New 200 Foundation honors special district teachers By NATHAN LURZ

How to nominate

nlurz@shawmedia.com Behind many lifelong learners and successful students, there is a teacher that made a difference. Each year, the New 200 Foundation honors a teacher at the elementary, middle and high school levels around Community Unit School District 200. On Monday, parents, students, faculty and more came together to celebrate the work of this year’s recipients, Matt Scheffler of Wheaton Warrenville South High School, Donna Kozica of Hubble Middle School and Megan Bostrom of Whittier Elementary, at the foundation’s Pizza Palooza celebration at South. The foundation asks for nominations from members of the district, including those who don’t have children in the school, foundation President Pamela Paulsen said. Then a panel of three retired principals goes through the information before selecting the winners. “This award comes down to being recognized by your peers and your students and inspires people to take the time and write a nomination,” she said. “The people who are working in

Kozica, a social worker in the district for 22 years and chair of the social work department at Hubbel, said she was surprised she was even considered

for the award. “For a social worker in a district to get the distinguished teacher award – holy cow,” she said. “I’m so proud because we have such great social workers who are all so dedicated. To be recognized like that for my whole division ... is very humbling.” Kozica said she was driven to her

work out of a desire to drive social emotional learning and intervene at an early stage in a child’s life. While she more than happily did so year after year, receiving the award has spurred the families of several former students to reach out to her and tell her the difference she made. “It’s just hard to explain – it’s a great feeling to know when you’re a social worker you can work with a student for a long time and you don’t know if you have an impact,” she said. “This award really gives me inspiration.” Paulsen said the awards were a simple way of acknowledging the great work everyone knows great teachers do. “Teachers really go above and beyond their jobs – that’s the cornerstone of the district and what makes them such a strength for it,” she said. “We have to take the time to highlight them.”

How to improve your business SEO and reach customers with sponsored content SPONSORED BY

By J.Tom Shaw Sponsored Content is a form of marketing that offers a business the opportunity to reach a targeted audience in a new way. While sponsored content can take on many forms, typically the method consists of articles and video created on behalf of a business. The content is labeled as sponsored, and linked from a news or entertainment website back to the business website. The business is featured in the content, and recognized as the sponsor. If done correctly, sponsored content can be very effective in reaching consumers since it is delivered in the same form and function as other content on the website, such as news. This method, commonly referred to as native content, has taken off in the online publishing industry in recent years. The content is displayed in relevant categories, and written in such a way to improve search engine results. So if someone is interested in car maintenance, they might come across an article that interests them in the local newspaper website, or they might conduct a search on Google and

find the article that way. In either case, the viewer is then exposed to the advertiser’s message by reading the article, and viewing the accompanying photo or video. There are some important elements to make sure that your sponsored content is effective as possible. First, make sure your content is created and displayed to improve your search results, or search engine optimization, SEO. Think about what words people use to search for your product or service on Google, and then use those keywords in your content and headlines. Create value with your content by being informative and engaging. Your article is not an advertisement, so don’t turn off your reader by beating them over the head with a sales message. Rather, offer something of value, such as a helpful tip related to your product or service. Finally, make sure your video and article reflect your business’ personality. Are you reflecting a fun, personable image? Keep the copy conversational and light so people aren’t intimidated or turned off by your message.

A former College of DuPage radio engineer accused of stealing more than $200,000 from the school’s radio station, WDCB, pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges Monday, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah. John Valenta, 65, of the 1700 block of Lucky Debonair Court, Whea- John Valenta ton, faces three charges of theft in excess of $100,000 – a Class X felony – and nine further counts of forgery, Darrah said. An internal audit conducted at the station, where Valenta was a 30-year employee, allegedly uncovered an “abnormally large number of costly invoices for radio station engineering services” from Broadcast Technologies, a company Valenta owned, according to a previous news release from the state’s attorney’s office.

An investigation revealed from June 2006 to December 2013, Valenta allegedly submitted Broadcast Technologies invoices to the college for merchandise and labor for work purported to be done at WDCB. The investigation also indicated the labor and merchandise listed on the invoices, totaling $200,829.77, was never delivered to the station. Valenta was originally charged Feb. 19 and posted bond on his $400,000 bail the next day, Darrah said. “The allegations in this case clearly illustrate the concept of simple greed,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement at the time. “The defendant had a good job for more than two decades before he allegedly decided to illegally supplement his income at the expense of the College of DuPage.” Valenta’s attorney, Brad Telander, did not respond to a request for comment. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 1 before Judge Liam Brennan, Darrah said.

Chipmunks and foxes are harmless unless you attack them. They are more afraid of you then you are of them. Wildlife is all around us, and those of us who live in the country enjoy seeing them. We had a fox who lived under our shed one spring and had four little ones. They were a joy to watch and never harmed anyone. That’s more than I can say for some people’s dogs.

Parents must make tough choices By the time these kids are in kindergarten, school life begins and play time at home slowly comes to an end, it is something you have to face as a parent. … I wish inflation didn’t overtake salary raises as bad as they have since the first recession, but it is what it is. So I will keep leading by example in my household of working my butt off while my wife works part time while my kids go to all-day kindergarten (8-2). And God forbid we take advantage of them getting more educated while we survive – working two jobs and keep reaching for that so-called American Dream.

Kindergarten is crucial In today’s extremely competitive scholastic environment, kindergarten plays a critical role in a child’s academic development. Adding a few hours a day seems more than appropriate.

Don’t judge working parents A reader suggested that proponents of full-day kindergarten are parents who “want to work instead of being home with their children,” and suggested that families that can’t exist on one income “shouldn’t be having children.” This is an offensive statement not only because it’s often necessary to have two incomes to support a family these days but also because parents should be able to choose to stay home or go back to work and not be judged for their decision.

Seidler goes the distance as Wildcats top North Stars By SCOTT SCHMID

Game breakdown

sschmid@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Entering the spring, West Chicago and coach Dan McCarthy knew what they had in staff ace Fred Gosbeth, who is committed to the University of Illinois at Chicago. Now the Wildcats have quickly learned what they also have in Peyton Seidler. Improving to 3-0 on the young season, the senior right-hander battled out of a couple late-inning jams Tuesday to finish off a complete game in a 7-5 victory against St. Charles North in the opener of an Upstate Eight conference three-game series. “Peyton has been solid all year,” McCarthy said. “Technically he is our No. 2 behind Fred but in conference, he has been throwing the first game [of the series].

Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com

West Chicago’s Brandon Bouchez beats the throw to second base March 31 in a 9-2 win against Addison Trail in Addison. “I probably kept him in too long in terms of his pitch count, but we have four games in a row this week.” Seidler induced a flyout with the bases loaded and a

three-run cushion in the sixth and then stranded a runner on second in the seventh. “It is always good when you have two pitchers who can come out and hit their spots,”

Seidler said, “and pound the zone. And it gives us so much confidence as pitchers when you have eight guys behind you who can all make plays. “This was a big confidence boost for our team. We lost a lot of seniors that started last year and we thought there might be a dropoff. But we have been able to come out and compete against every team. No game has gotten away from us. I’m happy that we’ve been able to compete with the good teams.” After scoring a pair of runs

in the opening frame on RBI singles by Brian Sullivan and Steve Gutowski, West Chicago (5-3) took the lead for good in the second on RBI hits by Connor Dall and Jared Smothers. A two-run single by Jake DeLuca upped the margin to 7-3 in the fifth. “St. Charles North is a very good team as their record indicates,” McCarthy said. “That was huge. We swung the bats real well and put the ball in play. We did a lot of good things.” In their previous league series, the Wildcats took two out of three from Larkin, though they finished the series with a 10-5 loss Friday. Two days earlier, behind a 15-strikeout performance from Gosbeth, West Chicago defeated the Royals 6-2. The senior allowed three hits. Offensively, Brian Sullivan and Jared Smothers had two hits apiece.

PREP ROUNDUP

Panthers baseball takes two from conference foe Naperville Central SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Glenbard North baseball team began DuPage Valley conference play with a 9-3 win over Naperville Central on April 13. A six-run third inning proved to be enough run support for starting pitcher Eric Orze, who struck out six while allowing six hits in a complete-game effort. Orze also helped himself at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alex Taylor was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Luke Greenberg went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Zach Heck also drove in two runs. A day later, it was Greenberg’s turn to stifle the Redhawks. The senior righthander threw all 11 innings in a 2-1 victory, allowing three hits while striking out five.

He did allow a run in the top of the 11th but the Panthers responded with two runs in their final at-bat. Greenberg led off with a double and later came around to score before Anthony Betancourt drove in the winning run with a bunt. On April 11, the Panthers dropped a 10-8 decision to St. Charles East. Heck had three hits and two runs and Greenberg went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

SOFTBALL Glenbard North The Panthers defeated Glenbard East 10-5 April 13 thanks in large part to a seven-run sixth inning. Stephanie Campos had a triple and Kayle Quanstrom and Mariah Roman had doubles. Casey Boland was the winning pitcher.
