COD comes under federal investigation By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In an event signaling more trouble for the long-embattled College of DuPage, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has issued a subpoena to the school for documents pursuant to an official criminal investigation. The subpoena, dated April 13, revolves around financial records for senior staff and trustees, communications and contracts involving college foundation members as far back as Jan. 1, 2009. The legal action follows a similar investigation by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office in recent months. “The College of DuPage and the College of DuPage Foundation are confident in the proper conduct of their affairs and will fully cooperate with any government investigation,” college spokesman Randall Samborn said. Board Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who has been an outspoken critic of the current trustees and administration and is poised to become the next chairwoman, said the college intended to cooperate with law enforcement but also gave some stern advice. “I want to issue a warning to the administrators and any other individual

at the college not to destroy any papers or transactions ... or any evidence of the potential of wrongdoing – that’s a criminal offense,” she said. Hamilton said she had reason to believe “something like that is going on” but declined to speak further. Chairwoman Erin Birt did not respond to a request for comment. A major focus of the investigation centers on the spending habits of President Robert Breuder, trustees and senior management. In November, it was revealed college officials expensed questionable items at on-campus restaurant Waterleaf, including meals for trustees and more than $1,000 in alcohol for a trustee Christmas party. The board also has been under fire for a $763,000 buyout awarded to Breuder earlier this year.

The trustees were scheduled to meet April 16, but officials announced a cancellation, citing deference to the new members elected April 7. Samborn said there was “no connection between the receipt of the federal grand jury subpoenas and decisions not to hold the meeting.” The subpoena also delved into accusations that foundation board members inappropriately received preferential treatment for contracts for work at the college. Particular controversy last month surrounded foundation board member Carla Burkhart, who got $630,000 in no-bid contracts for design work at the school through her firm Herricane Graphics. College and foundation officials have since defended the work, with foundation Executive Director Catherine Brod – who has announced she is stepping down in October – saying in a statement that foundation board members with contracts had been doing work for the school before serving on the board. A separate federal subpoena was issued April 13 for information about the college’s Suburban Law Enforcement Academy. The document asked for class records, instructor certificates, transcripts and communication between several top academy officials. The school is required to provide all records to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Lisle office or testify April 23 before a grand jury at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago for the first subpoena and April 30 for the second.

CAROL STREAM – Two newly planted trees now stand as monuments to the Earth Day eve celebration Tuesday at Western Trails Elementary School. Using a compost made up of food and other biodegradable waste, Western Trails students helped plant one of the burning maple trees. Flood Brothers Disposal, which provided the compost, also gave students bags of fresh compost with worms and directions to start composting at home. “I thought it was cool that we got to plant our own tree and that we learned how to make our own compost,” Emma Palermo, a fifth-grade student council member, said in a School District 93 news release. “This will help me compost at home.” Talking to about 80 Western Trails fourth- and fifth-graders, Principal Julie Tobin, Carol Stream trustee Rick
Gieser and Flood Brothers co-owner Brian Flood stressed the importance of caring for the Earth. “We want to help them see that what they throw in the garbage has an impact,” Flood said. Tuesday’s effort was an extension of what students were already learning at the school. In March, students started separating items in the lunchroom for composting. More than 80 percent of the lunchroom garbage – about 260 pounds worth – is compostable, according to a waste audit by Western Trails student council members. The school now has compost bins and liquids container bins in addition to trash and recycling bins. The program could keep 47,000 pounds of garbage out of landfills during a given school year, according to the news release. “This is just a great way to help our community,” Palermo said.

Health pros give advice at Wheaton fitness expo By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Getting fit can be a daunting task for many, whether you have been active before or not. The B Fit B Active Expo, hosted by the Kane County Chronicle and Suburban Life Media, featured a panel of health and fitness experts from around the area discussing ways to help jumpstart and sustain a healthy lifestyle. The five professionals covered ways to take care of your body, how to set attainable fitness goals and how to turn a passion for exercise and nutrition into a successful business during the event Wednesday at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. CrossFit trainer and nutritional enthusiast Britt Crow said fitness, no matter the sport or exercise of choice, was about choosing long-term habits, not short-term goals. “It’s finding a fitness routine that’s going to give you something you can do for life,” Crow said. Crow joined Ron Anderson, who started several fitness and medical centers, world-class Ironman competitor and nutritional expert Ryan Giuliano, injury prevention expert and triathlon competitor Dr. Kevan Ketterling and fitness entrepreneur Chris Leathers on the panel. Anderson stressed that those looking to make a change in their fitness habits need to drop the monthly binge on green detox drinks and make it permanent. “If you have a goal in mind, whether personally, professionally, whatever it is – you have to make a conscious decision that that’s what you want,” Anderson said. “After that, you have to learn what it is going to take today for me to do so that tomorrow I can be one step closer to that goal.” Properly setting goals was important for reaching them, Giuliano said. When he started his Ironman training in college, he couldn’t even swim the length of a pool, he said. But by creating specific, measurable, realistic and timely goals, he was able to become nationally competitive in the sport. He encourages the same process for all those going through

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Disciplinary measures are pending as of Monday against a Monroe Middle School student who threatened a classmate with a fake weapon last week, according to Community Unit School District 200 Director of Public Relations Erica Loiacono. In an email sent to parents April 14, Principal Bryan Buck stated two students were fighting on the district’s Bus Route 14 after school that day when one threatened to use a weapon he had in his backpack. Loiacono said both students were boys but could not confirm their grade. The student who was threatened immediately reported the incident, and Monroe staff and the Carol Stream Police Department stopped the bus between 3:30 and 4 p.m. in Carol Stream, Loiacono said. The student making threats had dropped his backpack outside the bus, leading to a police search of the area and the eventual recovery of the bag and what turned out to be a fake gun.
Police also searched the bus for weapons and found none. Buck said in the email he and Assistant Principal Susan Baldus-Strauss were on scene to assist the police in interviewing students and transferring them to another bus. In a follow-up message the next day, he said student safety and well-being is the school’s top priority and asked parents to speak with their children about telling staff when they know of something potentially dangerous at school. “Please help us by reminding your child what is appropriate and inappropriate to bring to school,” he said. “At no point are weapons ever appropriate to bring to school.” Carol Stream police declined to comment on the matter, referring inquiries to the district. Loiacono reiterated the importance of student safety in the district and thanked Carol Stream police and school administrators for responding quickly. “This is not something that happens in District 200 on a regular basis – it was a scary situation and something we did take very seriously,” she said.

of expectations. Teachers are instructing more students in more subjects to higher levels in more creative and dynamic ways. Our public schools have prepared millions of people from all classes and backgrounds to achieve the American dream. Gov. Bruce Rauner and our legislators need to be reminded that adequate resources are critical to the continued efforts to meet this myriad of educational expectations. Appropriate investment in our local public schools is the best strategy to ensure all Illinois citizens can thrive and prosper.

The inception and establishment of public schools began in the 16th and 17th centuries. Compared with today, the original expectations for America’s public schools were simple – teach basic reading, writing and arithmetic and cultivate the values of a democratic society (some history and civics implied). The creators of the original public schools assumed families and churches bore the major responsibility for raising the child. Beginning in the 19th century, society began to assign more responsibilities to schools. Politicians and business leaders viewed public schools as the logical place to assimilate newly arrived immigrants and help with the social

by Kendall Fletcher. Chicago’s Press continued her dominance after the interval. In the 50th minute, she set up a wide open Hemmings in the area, only to see the Colorado native’s low shot comfortably saved by a well-positioned Solo. Three minutes later, Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny released Press one-on-one with the Reign goalkeeper, who used all of her experience and class to defy her national teammate’s attempted fake-out and deny the opportunity. Seattle nearly punished the home side for the missed chances when Karina LeBlanc parried Kim Little’s 63rd-minute stinger wide of the frame for a stunning save. Ten minutes later, the spotlight was back on Reign shot-stopper Solo, who did an excellent job of tipping DiBernardo’s powerful drive around the post. Just when it seemed the Red Stars might have to settle for a draw in their home opener, Press produced a final piece of brilliance to send the home fans into ecstasy. The California native shocked the opposition backline by sprinting on to a bouncing ball and confidently slotting past Solo for the dramatic stoppage-time winner. The Chicago Red Stars hope to make it consecutive wins to start the season when they host superstar Alex Morgan and Portland Thorns FC on April 25. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

Chicago, Illinois – Professional women’s soccer outfit Chicago Red Stars opened its National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season with a bang on Saturday night, defeating defending regular season champions Seattle Reign FC 3-2, courtesy of a dramatic stoppage-time winner by forward Christen Press. The U.S. Women’s National Team star had a standout performance in the victory, as she bagged two goals as well as the assist on teammate Jen Hoy’s first-half tally. After an uneventful opening half hour, Seattle were first to get on the board. U.S. international Megan Rapinoe swung in a corner kick from the right and saw the ball make its way past the outstretched frame of Chicago goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and to the far post, where it was nodded home by Beverly Yanez. The home side pulled level mere moments later, as Vanessa DiBernardo’s delicate header found its way through to Press and the 26-year-old made it 1-1 with a clinical finish past Reign netminder Hope Solo. Energized by the equalizer, the Red Stars kept pushing and took the lead in the 32nd minute. Press got in behind the Seattle defense once more – this time on an exquisite long pass by defender Taryn Hemmings – and the striker’s low centering ball picked out Hoy at the doorstep for a simple tap-in. The lead was not to last, however, as another Rapinoe corner in the 39th minute saw the ball cleared back out to the midfielder, whose cross in from the right was converted via close-range header

Pitching powers Panthers baseball in early going By SCOTT SCHMID
Game breakdown
sschmid@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – Strong pitching and defense is a good recipe for success on the baseball diamond, and Glenbard North has proven that in the early stages of the 2015 season. The Panthers are 12-4 through the first 16 games of the campaign after a 4-3 win against Wheaton North in nine innings Wednesday capped a threegame sweep of their conference opponent. The latest victory marks the sixth in a row to begin DuPage Valley conference play as Panther pitchers have allowed four or fewer runs in each contest. “For the most part, we’ve gotten quality starting pitching,” Glenbard North coach Rich Smelko said. “Our pitching has carried us through the first 15 games, it’s been spot on. And we’ve been solid defensively. Pitching and defense wins you games.” Sam Ledbetter struck out eight in seven innings on the mound before Zach Stokas worked two scoreless frames of relief to record the win. Nick Barrett drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth. Zach Heck went 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and Eric Orze was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Stokas came on in relief to record the final two outs. “It is tough to pitch when the wind is blowing in your face,” Smelko said. “But he battled. The whole team battled.”
After falling behind 2-0, the visitors responded with four runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Nolan Jasinski and an RBI double from Heck. They added two runs in the fourth as Orze and Barrett both walked with the bases loaded. “We were fortunate to push across
four runs after they scored two in the first,” the coach said. “We’ve been slowly getting better with the bats. We’ve just got to keep putting the ball in play and try to square it up.” Glenbard North had opened the series against Wheaton North with an 11-1 victory in six innings Monday. Leading 3-0 heading into the fifth, the Panthers exploded for six runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The home team had 12 hits in all with Greenberg going 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Heck and John Bosco both collecting two hits. Jasinski and Matt Michalak also drove in two runs apiece. That run support was more than enough for Orze, who struck out seven in a complete-game effort. The team will begin a three-game set with Lake Park at 10 a.m. April 25.
