By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com Attracting audiences for decades has recently been rewarded with a major boost in sponsorships for the Glenbard Parent Series. Now the Glenbard School District 87 yearlong program is bigger and better than ever, according to Gilda Ross, Glenbard student and community projects coordinator. “Quality can beget quality,” Ross said. “People that come in are the best in the business. It is programming on every aspect of the student’s life.” The series brings in experts to teach parents, students and educators about the issues facing today’s youth and help them develop tools to remain proactive and strengthen the community. This school year’s four new annual sponsors – DuPage Medical Group, College of DuPage, Emmy Gaffey Foundation and Trust Company of Illinois – bring the program total number of annual sponsors to six, along with Cebrin Goodman Center and Cooperative Association for Special Education. The newfound support has allowed for 50 programs this school year, about 20 more than previous years, Ross said.

Claire Ball, an accountant, was home-schooled through high school and experienced structured learning for the first time at College of Dupage. She has a master’s degree in accounting and finance.

David Carlin, Naperville Carlin formerly served on the school’s board from 2007 to 2013 and works for the U.S. House of Representatives as a district director. Carlin said his time on the board was tumultuous and included talk of creating a campus in Costa Rica. Carlin said

“I’m an accountant, trained to be objective in decision-making, reasonable in reviewing assumptions and transparent in every action I take,” she said. “I analyze numbers and follow the Claire Ball paper trails, I ask questions and persist until I get the honest answers.” Ball criticized the lack of board oversight and alleged misuse of no-bid contracts, pushing for information on how contracts are reached. She suggested quarterly and yearly reviews of executive staff, including the president, by all levels of college employees.

The League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn hosted a forum March 24 at Glenbard South High School for all candidates running for the College of Dupage Board of Trustees. Incumbents Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda are seeking re-election. Also running are Dan Bailey, Claire Ball, Charles Bernstein, David Carlin, Matt Gambs, Roger J. Kempa, Deanne Marie Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano, Sandra M. Pihos and Joseph M. Wozniak, who did not attend the forum. Board Secretary Allison O’Donnell is not seeking another term. After a tumultuous year that saw the college field wide-ranging claims of fiscal irresponsibility, the candidates sought to assure residents that new leadership will herald positive changes for the school.
He underlined the importance of looking for leadership and working collaboratively to determine the best course of action at the school. When it comes to finding a new president, Bailey Dan Bailey suggested hiring a professional search committee to select the top four candidates and having the board decide from there. Specific items Bailey addressed included publicly listing no-bid contracts and discussing major capital change orders and live streaming videos of board meetings. “The COD puzzle has a lot of moving parts,” he said. “I want to be the missing part that is a watchdog for taxpayers, a bulldog for students and their teachers, and a leader in cleaning up the mistakes that have been made.” Bailey emphasized a college is not a business and education and cultural missions are important to retain.

While the series has often had to pay experts in the past to participate, one of the major benefits of having the new sponsorship is the increased visibility, which has drawn six particularly prominent speakers with no cost attached, Ross said. On Wednesday, for instance, Frank Bruni, an award-winning New York Times columnist, will talk about his book, “Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania.” Bruni has been a White House reporter and a frequent commentator on CNN and MSNBC. One of the new sponsors, The Trust Company of Illinois, was eager to get on board with an organization that strongly benefits the community. Bill Giffin, CEO of the Trust Company of Illinois, said the company decided to join this school year to strengthen its tie to the community and promote strong values and positive changes. “From a standpoint of our organization, one of our missions is to create positive change in every client that we work with and every community that we serve,” Giffin said. “When Gilda called, I really thought there was no better way than to try and help. If we can help in any way possible, I was all in.” In addition to funding, the sponsors also have provided highly qualified experts to participate in the series. The DuPage Medical Group will offer up one of its physicians to serve on a panel of speakers at the Dick Butkus: Play It Clean series event. Sports medicine physician Vijay Thangamani will help answer questions regarding the dangers of using steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.

By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com More than 50 students, parents and community members packed Glenbard Township High School District 87’s administration center March 18 to take part in a forum about changes to the district athletic code. The forum provided a means for district residents to voice concerns with the code and proposed revisions after the Board of Education denied overturning suspensions for Glenbard West student-athletes caught attending a party in June 2014 where alcohol was present. Some students received yearlong suspensions, and parents asked the board in August to examine a policy they deemed too harsh. The first half of the meeting allowed the policy committee to lay out the specific proposed revisions to the code, and in the second half, the public gave feedback on the changes. The forum was led by Assistant Su-

The Glenbard Parent Series is hosting a free event called Parents, Teens, Parties and the Law: Emerging Trends at 7 p.m. April 14 at Glenbard East, 1014 S. Main St., Lombard. perintendent of Human Resources Rodney R. Molek, who defended the existing code, outlining the rules student athletes must sign and agree to before participating in any sport. This code includes 37 behavior infractions with various consequences. Molek emphasized there are two main reasons underage drinking is included in the code – it is illegal and the district wants to send a strong message that it is dangerous while educating students to make good decisions. “The safety issue, commitment issue and the character issue are the three areas that I hope the policy accomplishes

After data collection and survey analysis, district administration upheld its policy that the code’s punishment should not change for students at a party where they or others are using illegal or controlled substances, including alcohol. Recommendations included creating a comprehensive extracurricular code for clubs as well as athletics, allowing a different structure for students that self-report code violations with a reduced punishment, and following an organized investigation process for infractions. violators who complete an approved rehab program will be suspended from 20 percent of scheduled sporting activities in his or her season. Athletes are suspended for one entire season if they commit a second violation. Some parents were shocked by the recommendations and felt uninvolved in the revision process. “We’ve had a lot of people get up and speak, but there was never any indication that parents were involved in this,” West parent Tom Kane said. “In my mind, this should have involved the parents from day one. “The whole idea of calling a kid in cold and interviewing them, asking for names, without a parent being notified is completely wrong.” While many questioned the code’s fairness and feasibility, others championed it as an opportunity for students to show leadership and responsibility. “To the question about ‘Should the kids be able to go to a party where there is alcohol?’ I ask you, who are the other kids who are drinking if they’re not?” West parent Kim Lutz said. “It’s their teammates and they shouldn’t be there. It’s illegal. ... They need to be held accountable and they need to have some consequences that hurt.”

Nancy Svoboda, Downers Grove Nancy Svoboda has been a DuPage County resident 43 years and has three degrees in education, including math, student personnel and a doctorate in adult education. “One of the responsibilities of trustees is to ensure the quality of education,” she said. “What I bring to the board is 34 years of experience as a higher-[edu- Nancy cation] educator.” Svoboda Svoboda said the top attributes when seeking a new president should be honesty, integrity, competitive credentials and experience as president of another institution.

Savage said her main goals are to keep the cost of college low, train the workforce and contribute to economic development. “The winds of change Kim are blowing through Savage community colleges across the nation and we need to harness that energy to guide our campus,” she said. “We need to ensure that those prevailing currents from the community college and academic world transform lives and don’t trap students in a whirlwind that doesn’t lead them forward.” Savage also was adamant about casting a wide net to obtain the best candidate for president and involving all stakeholders. Maintaining a collaborative atmosphere among the college community is part of Savage’s mission. “I would be honored to serve the community as a trustee to continue providing economic sustainability for the community, for the students, and to have a collaborative society with the faculty, staff and alumni,” she said.

Panthers take the field for season opener SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The first pitch has been thrown for area high school baseball teams. Here’s how things are shaping up for local teams this year:

Outlook: Glenbard North reached the 20-win plateau a year ago and have the pieces in place to have similar success this spring. Once again, the strength of the Panthers should lie on the mound as the squad, despite losing staff ace Matt Albin, returns a pair of talented right-handers in seniors Eric Orze and Luke Greenberg. Orze was 5-2 a year ago with 49 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings while Greenberg had an ERA of 1.50 in 46 2/3 frames and won four contests. Offensively, Glenbard North welcomes back a pair of .300 hitters in Nolan Jasinski and Sam Ledbetter. Jasinski batted .315 with 13 RBIs and 29 runs scored while Ledbetter checked in at .309 with 10 RBIs and 15 runs. Zach Heck also is someone to keep an eye on after being

Glenbard North opened the season with a 6-0 win against
Lake Zurich on March 27 as Orze allowed just two hits while striking out eight in five innings.

Outlook: After a strong finish to the 2014 season that culminated with a regional championship, the West Chicago baseball team hopes to carry that momentum into this spring. “We have a good group of kids,” West Chicago coach Dan McCarthy said. “With the year we had last year, winning the regional, it gives the kids something to build on.”
The Wildcats are blessed with some top-level talent, highlighted by Butler-bound Connor Dall, a third-year varsity shortstop who hit .376 as a junior. The pitching staff is led by UIC recruit Fred Gosbeth, who features an imposing fastball. “We’ve got some kids who have a bright future ahead of them,” McCarthy said. “But it will be the role players who didn’t play a lot last year who will determine how good we can be.” Fellow senior Peyton Seidler will be the No. 2 pitcher with senior Alex Cabral expected to fill the No. 3 role once he works himself back from injury. However, the everyday lineup has a few more question marks, and seniors Jared Smothers, Jon Sturm, Brandon Bouchez and Jake DeLuca will get their shot to earn playing time along with holdovers Dall, Seidler and Gosbeth. “We can be competitive,” McCarthy said. “We have a real solid one and two and when you get to the state tournament, if you’ve got two good arms, you’ve got a shot. This team has potential. We just have to continue to improve and do the little things right.” West Chicago split its first two games of the season, notching a 9-2 victory against Addison Trail on Tuesday. Seidler worked a complete game on the mound as the Wildcats scored seven runs during the final two innings.
