ern suburbs for their dedication to building and bringing together their communities. The awards ceremony welcomed 190 guests, including last year’s winners and the 2015 honorees’ closest friends, family and colleagues. “We have a remarkable group of women,” Suburban Life Media General Manager Laura Burke said. While Shaw Media has spent the past few years honoring women for their contributions, the event continues to inspire others to work toward their cause, Burke said. The recipients, who were selected by an outside committee, were given a moment to reflect on the occasion, share pieces of advice and thank those who have helped complete their mission.

BLOOMINGDALE – A group of local female photographers recently debuted their latest exhibit, “Images à la Sauvette,” or “Images on the Run,” at the Bloomingdale Museum. The exhibit began May 9 and runs through June 9. During the exhibit, fotoMuses, a group of local female photographers that was founded in 2001, will display their work that pays homage to one of the great 20th-century masters of photography, Henri Cartier-Bresson. Additionally, the exhibit is a trib-
ute to Jackye Revely, a fotoMuses member who died of cancer in September. The exhibit stems from the recent rerelease of Cartier-Bresson’s famous book, “The Decisive Moment.” Accordingly, the fotoMuses members have taken an assortment of Cartier-Bresson pieces and infused them with their own unique style. Cartier-Bresson was a master of taking a moment and adding in creative graphic lines. The members of fotoMuses try to mimic this style in the pieces featured in “Images on the Run.” For example, fotoMuses member

Huerta Shines for Red Stars in 3-0 Win over Boston Game of firsts sees rookie forward bag two goals, assist Chicago, Illinois – Saturday’s meeting between the Chicago Red Stars and the Boston Breakers was a game of firsts. Hosts Chicago earned a convincing 3-0 victory behind standout performances by several rookies and newcomers, Sofia Huerta leading the charge with two goals and an assist. Former Wisconsin star Cara Walls also had her first tally at the pro level and Kentucky product Arin Gilliland recorded her first career assist. Goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned a shutout in her first ever NWSL match. The Red Stars came close to grabbing the lead less than six minutes in, Vanessa DiBernardo releasing Huerta and the 22-year-oldfinding her match in Breakers netminder Jami Kranich, who rushed off her line for an outstanding save. Mere moments later, Huerta was at the center of another attack, as she sprinted up the left flank and produced a wicked centering cross that was inches too tall and skipped off the forehead of Alyssa Mautz on the goal-line. Shot-stopper Dalton guarded the net for Chicago in the place of World-Cup-bound Canadian star Karina LeBlanc. The26-year-old came up with her first noteworthy block in the 16th minute, Kristie Mewis releasing a thunderbolt from the top of the box that Dalton did well to parry wide. The home side quickly reclaimed control of the play, Huerta sending in a cross from the right and Jen Hoy’s fight seeing the ball pop out near-perfectly to Rachel Quon, whose effort at the doorstep was denied by a last-ditch sliding tackle. The visiting Breakers subsequently had a chance to punish their opponents for the missed opportunities, as wide open forward Stephanie McCaffrey wished she had opted for more power on a wide-open attempt from close range, Dalton comfortable making the save. The Red Stars came agonizingly close to opening the scoring on the immediate counter. Hoy picked out Huerta in the box and the Idaho native’s clever right-footed toe poke whistled just wide of the far post. A minute later, midfielder DiBernardo had the next close look for the hosts, her powerful attempt from about 17 yards forcing a quality stop from goalkeeper Kranich.

Chicago produced yet another excellent chanceless than two minutes into the second period, as the active Mautz nearly scored on her return from an ankle injury when her attempt from the right side of the penalty area was guided over the frame by Kranich. The home side finally did get on the board in the 56th minute, DiBernardo’s well-timed through-ball releasing Huertain on goal and the young striker showing impressive composure in rounding Kranichand slotting into the open net for her first NWSL tally. Red Stars fans thought their team had another goal shortly after the hour mark. A nice combination play on the right saw former Breakers defender Taryn Hemmings take over from Mautz and crossing a dangerous ball into the area that ended up at the feet of Hoy, who had a chance to score with the goalkeeper beaten but instead fired wide of the left post. In the 70th minute, Chicago rookie and substitute Walls put on a clinic in finishing, as she blasted past her marker on a single touch off the feed from Huerta and fired a pin-point accurate ball over Kranich to double her side’s advantage. First-year pro Huerta continued to cause havoc for the Boston backline, nearly scoring out of nowhere in the 82ndminute. Facing away from the goal at a difficult angle, the day’s most dangerous player managed to turn and release a stinging drive on target that forced a reaction save from ‘keeper Kranich. Moments later, Huerta bagged her second goal, finishing at the far post on a Gilliland cross from the left that saw the rookie defender record her first ever NWSL assist. It would be the final noteworthy action of the game, as the hosts held on for the shutout and a crucial three points that puts them at the top of the NWSL standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn their fourth win in five NWSL fixtures when they travel to take on Houston Dash on Friday, May 15. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting [ http://www. chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.
The horse’s new ride was completely renovated with a more spacious interior having the look and feel of a proper horse stall, as well as new brakes and a new starter. Many community partners also participated in the renovation. Chicago Parts and Sound of Wooddale contributed more than $1,000 in mechanical parts and Millers Total Comfort in St. Charles created the roof for the car. Chicago Wrap Heffner’s Design in Burr Ridge made a custom vehicle wrap for the Excursion. Friendly Ford’s contribution to Teddy’s ride totaled nearly $20,000.

WHEATON – One of the city’s biggest retail spots now has a new owner and will soon be getting a face-lift. Tucker Development and Hutensky Capital Partners bought Town Square Wheaton, a 200,000-square-foot shopping, dining and office space on the south side of Wheaton, for $57.25 million. Rich Tucker, CEO of Tucker Development, said the opportunity to get into an established and built-in market was one they couldn’t pass up. “We have been aware of the property for a number of years, ever since it was built, and we always liked the real estate and the location,” he said. “And we knew there wouldn’t be a quality development like this that came around often.” The two companies have targeted about $1 million in physical improvements, including signage, façade work and other items, Tucker said. He said the property has about 85 percent occupancy with 160,000 square feet of retail space and shops includ-
ing Banana Republic, Yankee Candle, Gap and Victoria’s Secret. Tucker said he hoped to fill the remaining spaces with dining options. It also includes two professional buildings housing several medical care facilities. Tucker also said he envisioned expanding the location’s annual programming, which now includes a variety of events such as the Christmastime Frosty Fest and a Halloween costume party. “There are great demographics around there,” he said. “There’s a customer base that’s already there that we think can be improved upon by creating more opportunities.” Kerry O’Brien, executive director of the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, said she was excited to see the new management. She said continuing to have a strong shopping center off of Naperville Road and Blanchard Circle was a good complement to the city’s downtown. “Some people sometimes see that as competing shopping centers, but they both enhance each other making Wheaton a retail destination,” she said.

Taste of Glen Ellyn returns to downtown By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The Taste of Glen Ellyn is gearing up for its 38th year of satisfying the taste buds and thrill-seeking spirits of community members. The Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce will host this year’s Taste from today to Sunday in the heart of downtown. The Taste has grown over the years, attracting people of all ages, according to chamber Executive Director Mike Formento. “We get a great number of people from all the municipalities around DuPage and areas around Chicago,” he said. “This event continues to be a great attraction for all ages and we’re here to provide their fun.” The Taste will include 17 food vendors, 30 business showcase booths, a craft show and a carnival. According to Formento, the Taste of Glen Ellyn preceded the Taste of Chicago as one of the first events of its kind and has grown to an estimated 25,000 attendees per year. “We were the first festival that started the whole string of festivals that you see going on in every community,” he said. “As the originator, we just seem to get more and more people who come to see what we’ve got going on.” Each night of the Taste will have a music genre theme and featured acts. Among them will be representatives from School of Rock Glen Ellyn, which

which an Italian-French painter also poses with a mannequin. The exhibit also will pay homage to a late fotoMuses member, Jackye Revely. Revely died in September after a battle with cancer. Revely was a beloved member of not only the fotoMuses but also of the Bloomingdale Arts Association. Another fotoMuses member, Marita Blanken, of Downers Grove said Revely often won awards for her works with the Bloomingdale Arts Association. She was very involved in all the exhibits they would display. Blanken described Revely as a wonderful friend that was authentic, honest and caring. “Jackye seemed to have the ability to spark ideas with her multidimensional work,” Blanken said. “She brought a lot of inspiration to the group and she knew how to give people

will showcase a variety of bands from its school on the Taste’s main stage. General Manager Jillian Macson said the Taste is the perfect event to shine a spotlight on the burgeoning musicians at School of Rock. “I think it’s one of the most fun events Glen Ellyn puts on,” she said. “It really gives us a nice lot of people that maybe haven’t seen any of our shows prior to that.” In addition to the food and music, the event will add several new rides to its carnival. They include Super Shot, a 90-foot high drop tower; Wacky Worm Roller Coaster, a two-story coaster; and Rock Star, a 60-foot free-fall ride. Fantasy Amusement President Bill Johnson will be coordinating the carnival rides for his 30th year, and has seen the carnival shift over the years to feature more technologically-advanced rides. “Everything is more computerized, more LED lights, more spectacular,” he said.

Glenbard North surging into postseason By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com High school girls soccer teams started the season with hopes of making it to the state finals. With the playoffs starting next week, here’s what the postseason has in store for Glenbard North and West Chicago:
Glenbard North Regional: Hoffman Estates Sectional: Schaumburg Sectional seed: No. 12 First match: 7 p.m. Tuesday vs. No. 5 Batavia
Outlook: The Panthers have played their best soccer as of late and had a record of 7-5-3 through their first 15 matches. Sophomore Emma Martinez was leading the squad with six goals while freshman Aurelia
Carulli had four. Sammy Aron and Emily Dybowski had each found the back of the net twice. Defensively, the squad also has been quite strong, led by senior goalie Ariana DePinto and the senior trio of Katie Frye, Katie Rissman and Sarah Peters in front of her. Facing Batavia to start at the Hoffman Estates regional, the winner most likely would see Conant in the regional final. “We have just put together a nice run of form,” coach David Stanfield said, “and what is especially pleasing is that we are down to 13 fit players because of injuries. And we were not particularly deep to begin with. We have had to make some adjustments with regard to tactics and team shape and the girls have been receptive and adept at executing on the field.
“The game against Batavia will be tough, no question. However, if we play with desire, focus and intensity, I believe we can give them problems.”
West Chicago Regional: Wheaton North Sectional: Schaumburg Sectional seed: No. 9 First match: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday vs. No. 6 WWS
Outlook: A young team with only two seniors on the roster, West Chicago has hit some bumps in the road this spring. The Wildcats started out well, winning five of their first nine matches, but have gone 1-6-2 since then, which includes a 3-0 loss against Downers Grove North on May 9. They hope to turn things around in time for the postseason.
