mlaluz@shawmedia.com A Glendale Heights teen is being held on a $3 million bond after allegedly fatally stabbing a man at a high school graduation party in unincorporated DuPage County near Glen Ellyn. Alberto Jimenez, 18, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the alleged June 6 stabbing of Tehavis Price, 19, of Aurora, according to Assistant DuPage Alberto C o u n t y S t a t e ’ s A t - Jimenez torney Steve Knight. Jimenez appeared in DuPage County court June 9 before Judge Karen Wilson, when bond was set. He also is charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. Verkita Vargas, 19, who was the victim’s girlfriend, also was injured in the incident, Knight said.

The alleged murder occurred at a graduation party for students from Glenbard West High School, of which Jimenez was not a recent graduate, according to Knight. DuPage County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene about 10:30 p.m in the 2N300 block of Prairie Avenue. Jimenez came to the party and began to start fights with various attendees and flash gang signs, Knight said. Price and Vargas were sitting in a vehicle, preparing to leave, according to Knight, when Jimenez approached the car, opened the front driver-side door and allegedly stabbed Vargas in the abdomen with a pocket knife.

Price got out of the passenger side of the vehicle and approached Jimenez, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Jimenez then allegedly stabbed Price three times in the chest, three times in the left side, once in the groin and once in the shoulder, Knight said. Price suffered a punctured lung and pierced heart. The couple was transported to a local hospital, where Price was pronounced dead, according to Knight. Jimenez fled the scene but was arrested the following morning at a Hanover Park home, the release stated. Vargas is being treated for her injuries and is expected to recover. Jimenez has a history of encounters with law enforcement, previously having been charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon, felony mob action, unlawful contact with street gang members and resisting a police officer, according to Knight. Jimenez will next appear in court July 7.

The data presented showed lower use during breaks but an uptick during the final days before school started again after time off. This is normal and expected, according to Lang, who is interested in seeing if students are engaged in learning with their mobile devices on off days, with the goal of 24/7 learning in mind. Overall, Lang said the district already is seeing benefits with the program. Math students can record the steps they use to solve a problem, which makes it easier for teachers to see their

GLEN ELLYN – As Glenbard Township High School District 87 finishes the first year of its one-to-one iPad deployment program, officials are considering the success of the program, as well as future goals moving forward. The program required all freshman-level students to rent an iPad from the district or bring one from home. The 12-month iPad rental fee cost students $189, including mandatory insurance. An additional $85 fee covered digital curriculum and applications, with the final cost coming to $274. Director of Instructional Technology Robert Lang, who presented data on the program’s first year to the Board of Education during a May 26 meeting, was enthusiastic about what he saw. “It’s our first attempt at online learning, so it’s exciting the things we learn along the way,” he said. The data Lang presented examined how 2,500 students used the learning management system Schoology in conjunction with their iPads through the year. Overall, the application saw 545,863 visits from students, with 52,428 comments posted, 126,654 submissions made and 119,332 files uploaded, according to district documents. “This is a good indication that there is collaboration happening ... It shows us that they’re interacting and using it,” Lang said. The district also tracked application use during nonpeak learning times, such as inclement weather days and

those tools?” Lang said most students enjoy using the iPad and understand the distinction between social life and school life with regard to using the device. He did say, however, teaching students to self-regulate technology use will be a challenge going forward. This summer, about 190 students will participate in an online self-paced math remediation program monitored by district math teachers. The goal of the program is to support struggling math learners by having them watch videos, do assignments and take quizzes to help them prepare for geometry and chemistry classes. Next year, the iPad program will branch out to include freshmen- and sophomore-level students. By 2017, all district students will have an iPad for instructional use. The school is phasing in the program through different grade levels to stagger teacher training while also making sure curriculum is digitized for each grade, according to Lang. “We’re seeing some growth. I’m confident that we’re doing it right as I look at some other school districts that are giving all students iPads at the same time. And they’re not building as much capacity going forward, mostly because it is an overwhelming task,” Lang said. The next step for the school will be to look at blended learning, in which students would not have to report to the same classroom space five days a week, but could spend more time independently studying or in a group outside of class, according to Lang.

College loses $2.2 million from costly, prohibited investment By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Two top College of DuPage administrators have been placed on administrative leave after a buried internal audit calling several costly investments into question came to light. Thomas Glaser, senior vice president of administration and treasurer,

and Lynn Sapyta, assistant vice president of financial affairs and controller, were placed on leave June 9 pending the results of an ongoing investigation. The audit was led by internal auditor James Martner and formally dated May 4, according to the audit and a college news release. It had been in circulation internally from March 2015 onward, before being delivered to the Board of Trustees more recently. The audit examined investments by the school as of Sept. 30, 2014, and found several areas of noncompliance with

board policy, including exceeding limits for specific types of investments and holding investments that do not meet dollar, maturity or asset quality thresholds. It also urged “immediate action” and included several recommendations, all of which were accompanied by the text “Management Response: Management did not respond to this recommendation.” As of September, investments were concentrated primarily in bond mutual funds and local government investment pools, which comprised 72 percent of the school’s portfolio, according to the audit.

However, board policy states each of those should be no more than 5 percent of the portfolio, because of interest rate risks. That overreliance cost the school $2.2 million after a loss from its sizable investment in the Illinois Metropolitan Investment Fund, the audit stated. College staff increased the school’s investment in the local government investment pool from $10 million in April 2014 to more than $80 million in

Continued from page 2 two siblings, ages 5 and 7, on May 27 as they were playing in a playground at the apartment complex where they lived on Dogwood Drive in Lisle, prosecutors said. Ressa allegedly made aggressive physical contact with the older sibling and offered the younger sibling toys if he agreed to go into Ressa’s vehicle. A third sibling then called the two home and the children’s parents contacted the Lisle Police Department. Upon further investigation, the department found the incident was hardly a first for Ressa. He had a history of parent complaints – at least 10, State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said, dating back to 2001, and some as recent as this year – in Wheaton, Carol Stream, West Chicago, Warrenville and Glen Ellyn, among other communities, according to prosecutors. That history included allegedly telling a girl he interacted with he had “special powers from God” that allowed him to hear things and promising to teach her if she didn’t

Lisle Police Chief Dave Anderson addresses the media during a news conference June 4 at the DuPage County courthouse regarding the charges against West Chicago resident Giuseppe “Joe” Ressa. tell anyone, prosecutors said. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct in 2004 for inappropriate contact and statements made to a 10-yearold Glen Ellyn girl and was placed under court supervision. Ressa was arrested June 1 after Lisle detectives conducting surveillance on him as a suspect in the May 27 incident observed him allegedly interacting with and giving candy to three children, ages 4, 6 and 7, at their apartment building in Addison, after he visited several other apartment buildings across DuPage, according to prosecutors.

Two of the children followed Ressa to another apartment building after the promise of more candy while the third left to tell her mother. Ressa then allegedly rubbed the upper leg of the 7-year-old, prosecutors said, and detectives intervened and placed him into custody. When asked in court about his most recent job by Judge Karen Wilson, Ressa said he worked with children and was employed at the Woodridge Park District working at an after-school program as recently as May 29. Ressa also previously has worked with children at the

B.R. Ryall YMCA in Glen Ellyn and the Westmont Park District, according to Berlin, in addition to other area churches and organizations, prosecutors said. After his arrest, detectives obtained warrants and searched Ressa’s Chevy Equinox and his room in his parents’ house. There they found what prosecutors identified as “hundreds” of pieces of paper. Included were drawings by children; the personal information of customers he obtained while employed at a bank from 2006 to 2010, often with lewd and specific handwritten notes about their children; prayers that included the names of children across the country who had been abducted; prayers for children to be his wives in heaven; a book about grooming children for pedophilia; and several notes depicting erotic scenarios with children. Ressa also had a calendar with several notes on it, according to prosecutors, including a Dec. 9 note – Ressa’s birthday – labeling the day as “real Christmas” and a note Dec. 25 stating history would “apologize for getting it wrong.” Additionally, detectives found a toddler’s bike helmet, a soccer ball, a wristband and

other children’s items. Prosecutors said Ressa is single with no children. Berlin said the investigation is still ongoing and declined to comment on whether investigators had found any digital images on any seized computers. He also asked members of the public with complaints against Ressa to come forward. Berlin said the case should serve as a notice for parents to remind children of the danger of strangers. “Clearly the actions of the defendant indicate that he is a pedophile and that he is a danger to children,” Berlin said. “He poses a real and present threat to the safety of the community.” Lisle Police Chief Dave Anderson said he breathed a sigh of relief when Wilson ordered Ressa be held without bond. “All of us in law enforcement got in it to stop these type of people,” he said. “That’s why we’re here.” Ressa also appeared in court June 5, when prosecutors offered the option for him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, according to a spokesman for the State’s Attorney’s Office. He will next appear in court to accept or decline the offer June 15.

Why [do] bicycle riders have their own lane and choose not to stay in that lane and follow the rules of the road like everyone else has to? They never stop at stop lights or signal their intentions to make a right turn and also be aware of people in the crosswalk. I feel if they’re riding in the streets, they should be held accountable like we motorists.

Unfair Florida

I would like to know why the commissioner of hockey, the city of Tampa and the state of Florida are allowing the Tampa [Bay] hockey team to discriminate against the fans from Chicago. I don’t think that’s right. My family was going to go to Florida for vacation. We have changed our plans now. They don’t want our money over there, we’re going to go to California instead, and I hope everyone else does the same.

Not all bikers are in gangs

It’s a wonderful thing to ride the open road on your motorcycle. But the motorcycle gang in Waco, Texas, was just that – a gang. People, don’t let this biker gang story let you think most riders are that crazy. And I’m happy no pedestrians were shot, and good job to the police.

Bikes and cars can coexist

Although the opinion has been stated at least twice in Sound Off recently that bicycle riders need to stay on bike paths, it will remain just that, an opinion. Bicycle riders have the legal right to ride on city streets in our wonderful city and, indeed, throughout the U.S.A. There are some exceptions, such as on expressways, where signage prohibits bicycles. … The bottom line is that both bikers and drivers need to exercise care and follow the laws. Coexistence is possible and necessary.

Rochester, N.Y. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars capped off their four-game road swing with a 3-1 defeat to Western New York Flash on Saturday night. The result, which came courtesy of second-half tallies by the home side’s Sam Mewis, Elizabeth Eddy and Jamia Fields, snapped a seven-game unbeaten run for the visitors to open the season and a ten-game unbeaten run dating back to 2014. Red-hot Chicago striker Sofia Huerta bagged the late consolation goal, moments after having a penalty kick attempt saved. The game’s first promising look went to hosts Western New York in the second minute, as a corner kick from the left saw Red Stars goalkeeper Michele Dalton struggle to control the ball in traffic but then recover well to deny Mewis at the far post. The next quality chance was created by Chicago, as Vanessa DiBernardo released Huerta down the left and the striker cut to her right before releasing a powerful drive that was deflected by a defender and whistled wide of the frame. After potential goal-saving tackles by Red Stars center backs Samantha Johnson in the 22nd minute and Michelle Lomnicki in the 25th minute, teammate Alyssa Mautz nearly opened the scoring at the other end around the half-hour mark. DiBernardo picked out Arin Gilliland on the left and the rookie engaged her marker with some nice footwork, followed by a right-footed cross that found an open Mautz at the far post. The attacker was unlucky to arrive slightly late, her volleyed attempt missing just wide. The visitors had another dangerous opportunity in first-half stoppage time, as some nice interplay between Mautz and Taryn Hemmings sent the 25-year-old Mautz into the box on the right, DiBernardo nearly capitalizing on the layoff by releasing a low first-time effort that was saved by a diving Chantel Jones. While the Red Stars defense had looked solid throughout the opening period, the Flash took control after the break and put on an impressive attacking display. The first tally came courtesy of strong buildup play and a great individual effort by Mewis, rookie Fields opening up the field with an intelligent 51st-minute centering ball from the right

to Eddy and the former USC Trojan leaving it to Mewis, who dribbled past several defenders and slotted inside the right post to make it 1-0. The Flash never looked back after finding the net once, as Eddy added a goal to her assist halfway through the second period to double the home side’s advantage. Williams streaked down the right flank and sent a low cross toward the feet of the California native, who beat a defender to the ball inside the box before flicking it up to herself and then over onrushing netminder Dalton with an exquisite touch. Western New York would put the icing on the cake in the 75th minute with perhaps the most impressive of three well-taken goals. Finding herself facing the Chicago area with few options available, Fields cut to her left and fired a left-footed laser beam into the upper ninety from 30 yards out. The wonder tally was made possible by Becky Edwards, who had freed herself up with a skillful move in midfield and found her teammate with a pinpoint accurate long pass up the field. Just as it seemed the home side might be able to earn a clean sheet on top of three points, the Red Stars were awarded a penalty kick following a chaotic sequence that saw substitute forward Mary Luba go down in the area and a Flash player subsequently handle the ball. Determined to tie Crystal Dunn atop the NWSL goal-scoring charts, Chicago striker Huerta stepped up to the spot, only to see Jones dive to her right and parry the waist-high attempt wide of the post. Huerta did find the net on the ensuing corner kick. Gilliland met DiBernardo’s in-swinger with her head to rattle the crossbar, Cara Walls managing to redirect the rebound against the right post while wrestling a pair of Flash players on the doorstep, followed by a simple tap into the open net by the visitors’ most inform attacker. It would be the game’s final noteworthy action, as the NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to get back on track when they return to Benedictine University in Lisle for a June 20 blockbuster meeting with second-place Washington Spirit. Bike paths are great, but they do not provide a pathway to most destinations and bicyclists are required to use the street. Bicycles are a legal and environmentally friendly form of transportation. Remember also bicyclists may take the entire lane of the road when they feel it is safest and drivers are required by law to pass with at least 3 feet of clearance.

I’d like to sound off about the overcrowding in the elementary schools in Glen Ellyn. I wonder why the board doesn’t just reopen the recreational center on Main Street and Hill Avenue that originally was as elementary school for years. I agree with the other person in that there is too much racket all summer. Frequently, when I go into the yard for a little garden therapy, relaxation or to have lunch or dinner, someone fires up their mower, blower, edger or weed whacker. … And the new noise maker on my side of Glen Ellyn is the built in generators many neighbors now have because our power grid is so unreliable. Once a week, they run for 20 minutes, all at different times. And when the power does go out, I cannot open my windows to get a breeze because of all the incessant noise.

I wholeheartedly agree with the person who sounded off a few weeks ago about Lisle using toxic chemicals in the public spaces. We’re the arboretum village and should be more conscientious of what we do to the environment. The overwhelming majority of products that go on residential lawns and public park land have carcinogens, create polluted runoff that goes in our waterways and decimate the pollinator population like bees and butterflies. I really wish everybody would See SOUND OFF, page 11

the west, off Walnut. But you still might have something to worry about if someone at the Park District gets the idea to put a water park there instead of a playing field.

Not Village Council’s fault

It’s very disappointing to see that the proposed buyer of the Edwards House is blaming former Village Council members for the demise of the purchase. I think the proposal offered by the Village Council, a 10-year, no-interest loan, was very generous. Instead the proposed buyer thought he should get a gift of roughly $123,000 from taxpayer funds. … The council members did the taxpayers a favor since the owner of every other historic building in the village would have been lined up to get their “gift.”

She said in the release the audit showed the school’s internal controls had failed and that Glaser and Sapyta’s actions were a “deeply troubling betrayal.” “I pledge solemnly that nothing like this will ever happen again while I am on this board,” Hamilton said. “It is utterly unworthy of our educational mission and its successful advancement.” Acting President Joseph Collins, who brought the audit to the board’s attention, said in the release the mismanagement was unacceptable and the college’s administration is now addressing each of the auditor’s recommendations. Hamilton said the board would consider during its June 11 meeting hiring a financial advisory firm to manage the school’s finances on an interim basis.

September without board authorization, according to the audit. The investment represented 29.2 percent of the college’s portfolio. The Illinois Metropolitan Investment Fund revealed in October it had defaulted on certain guaranteed loans, causing each of its members’ funds to be effectively frozen, the audit stated. Had the college adhered to its 5 percent limit, which would have allotted for an investment of $13.6 million, it would have lost $381,436 instead of the $2.2 million. As of the audit’s completion, only a small percentage of the funds had been returned to the school. The audit also found: • Overinvestment in bond mutual funds • Glaser did not receive proper notification from financial institutions holding college money committing to abide by board policy. • Poor average annual yield in fiscal years 2012 and 2014 • Staff failed to produce required quarterly reports for the board. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said in an interview the audit was conducted by order of President Robert Breuder, who has since himself been placed on administrative leave, and delivered to the college’s finance department.

“I pledge solemnly that nothing like this will ever happen again while I am on this board. It is utterly unworthy of our educational mission and its successful advancement.”

The recently finished project in Downers Grove from 63rd Street to 67th and from Main streets to Saratoga is a very poor job done by the company the village hired. The sidewalks and partially finished concrete driveways have cracks right from the beginning. The drain ditches are too deep, hard to cut the grass, but they don’t drain properly.

SCHAUMBURG – For a Glenbard North baseball team that had accomplished so much this spring, a four-run deficit didn’t seem that daunting. And even though in the end the Panthers came up one hit short in a 7-5 defeat against Oak Park-River Forest in a Class 4A supersectional at Boomers Stadium, they certainly didn’t go down without a fight. In fact, the home team had the tying runs on base in both the sixth and seventh innings. “We’ve been kind of resilient all year, even though we have not been behind too much,” Glenbard North coach Rich Smelko said. “But the times we have, we’ve always fought back. I’m extremely proud of the way the guys competed [on Monday] and all year long.” Glenbard North first clawed its way back in the third inning, when facing a 3-0 deficit, as Nick Barrett plated two with a double and Luke Greenberg followed with an RBI single. Then, after the Huskies pushed across four in the top of the sixth, the Panthers immediately responded in the bottom half, with Sam Ledbetter and Neal Shah driving in runs. An ensuing double play ended that threat, and a pair of groundouts with runners on second and third in the seventh brought a curtain down on the 2015 campaign. “We are never out of it,” Smelko said. “We fell just short.” Glenbard North finished with a record of 26-11 and captured the DuPage Valley Conference championship along with regional and sectional titles. “We had an unbeliev able season,” Smelko said. “I couldn’t be happier to coach this group of guys. They are a special group who won the

Panthers end sectional title drought

Pitching and defense was the perfect formula for the Glenbard North baseball team to claim its first sectional title since 2003 with a 3-0 victory

against South Elgin on June 6. Eric Orze improved to 12-0 on the mound with a complete-game performance in the St. Charles East sectional championship game. Without his usual best stuff, the senior righty relied on a strong defense, which was headlined by shortstop Nolan Jasinski, who helped start a double play to get the home team out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. Orze also picked off a pair of runners at second base while catcher Zach Heck gunned

down a runner between first and second after losing a ball in the dirt. “Nolan had a great game,” Orze said. “I don’t know how many assists he had but he kept everything in front of him. Like I’ve always said, I try to let my defense work. I have all the confidence in them and they showed how good they are.” Glenbard North scored all the runs it needed in the second, pushing across a pair thanks in large part to three South Elgin errors. lead with a long solo home run. “The count was 2-0 and I was sitting fastball,” Orze said. “My first at-bat, I got beat by the fastball. I just threw my hands at the ball, got lucky and got a good piece of it.” The victory was the team’s 26th, a new program record. “We had five returning starters [from a year ago],” Orze said. “That core five or six guys, I grew up playing with them since 9U ball. We knew we could do something special this year.”
