GLENDALE HEIGHTS – A local chapter of a national Muslim organization recently donated personal hygiene products to DuPage PADS in honor of Ramadan. ICNA Relief Chicago, the Glendale Heights based local chapter of a National Muslim organization dedicated to helping the most vulnerable, will donate $3,000 worth of personal hygiene products to DuPage PADS on June 23 to honor the Islamic month of Ramadan, according to an ICNA news release. The month began June 17, depending on the sighting of the new moon. “DuPage Pads is very grateful for the generous efforts of ICNA Relief’s Women’s Essentials campaign. Certainly, the women we serve will feel respected and hopeful,” DuPage Pads
President and CEO Carol Simler said. “Islam is about reaching out to the neediest among us, irrespective of faith, race or gender,” said Dr. Saima Azfar, Director, ICNA Relief Chicago. “According to our teachings, the believer’s charity will serve to shade him or her on the Day of Resurrection. God’s countless favors upon us are not ours alone. Yes, we are beneficiaries but we are also no more than a vessel, channels to distribute His wealth. Feminine care products, such as sanitary napkins and tampons, are not typically donated to food pantries and shelter homes. For a homeless woman these donations make a world of difference in preserving her dignity and self-respect.” For information about DuPage PADS, visit dupagepads.org. DIXON – Shaw Media, owner of the Suburban Life, announced June 17 that it is purchasing Record Newspapers Inc. from Jeff and Kathy Farren. Based in Yorkville, The Record Newspapers include the Kendall County Record in Yorkville, the Ledger-Sentinel in Oswego, the Plano Record and the Sandwich Record, as well as affiliated websites. “We are proud to welcome the Record Newspapers to our growing portfolio of family-owned, community-focused media operations,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We look forward to continuing the Farrens’ tradition of quality local journalism, while expanding the Ledger-Sentinel’s and Record’s presence through digital formats.” The transaction is expected to close June 26. “We have always worked hard to provide extensive local news coverage of our communities. So we are pleased with Shaw Media’s commitment to continue that level of coverage for our readers,” Kathy Farren, Record editor, said. Founded in 1864, the Kendall County Record was purchased by the Farrens in 1973. The Farrens founded the Plano Record in 1976. They acquired the Oswego Ledger in 1979 and the Fox Valley Sentinel in 1980. The two papers were consolidated and called the Ledger-Sentinel. The Sandwich Record was launched by the Farrens in 1985. “The decision to sell was a difficult one,” publisher Jeff Farren said, but he added, “We believe Shaw will be able to continue providing good newspapers for our readers and advertisers with more online content in the future.” Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Founded in 1851, Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated media company in the U.S. It owns and operates newspapers, magazines, websites and other publications throughout Chicago’s suburbs and northern Illinois, as well as in Iowa.

Area kids jump 24 hours for charity By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – A pair of Carol Stream kids were among a group of six children that turned an act of desperate boredom into a $1,300 donation to charity after jumping on trampolines for 24 hours straight. From 9 p.m. June 2 to 9 p.m. June 3, Carol stream residents Ty and Ethan Conley, as well as Cal and Theophilus Sohmer, Jonathon James and Ben Haase jumped on two trampolines. “The inception of it was three years
ago when they were just sitting around bored one afternoon in the summer looking through the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ looking for things to break,” Ben’s dad, Dan Haase, said. Ben, Ethan and Ty only made it 12 hours that year, but have since doubled the participants and given the now-annual event a purpose. This year, the boys, who are entering grades five through eight, spent weeks going door-to-door in Wheaton, Carol Stream and Naperville collecting pledges to support the nonprofit Feed My Starving Children, which encourages volunteers to hand-pack meals for malnourished children around the world. “It’s a fun organization we’ve all been to and it’s something we’ve all been involved with that we all thought was really cool,” Ben said. The six collected a total of $1,343 in pledges, which translates to more than

The outfit was a well-oiled machine – the boys used the proceeds of a lemonade stand they ran to buy a day’s worth of snacks, and set up a television and computer to play music before getting started at the Haase household. “I stopped by from time-to-time,” said mom Julie Sohmer. “I think one

was getting delirious at one point – they had to bounce continuously with five-minute breaks every hour. ... They are at that age when they have so much energy and they have a lot of time. So I was thrilled that they wanted to do something to benefit others.” Ethan said the six fought through cramps, tiredness and general boredom, but hope to do it again next year. “Every time afterward, we always say ‘We’re never doing it ever again!’” he said. He advised that those who hear about their efforts “don’t try this at home.” “It couldn’t make a parent prouder,” Dan said. “Watching them look beyond themselves, especially during part of life when it’s easier to be self-focused. ... Seeing them use their imaginations for something that’s good to do good in the world is just a beautiful thing.”

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A previously redacted report released by the College of DuPage Board of Trustees shows the school’s former WDCB radio station manager may have known about an investigation of an employee who allegedly stole thousands from the college years before senior administration learned of the possible wrongdoing. The board unanimously approved releasing the independent report by Williams Montgomery and John Ltd. to the public during its June 11 special meeting. The school hired the firm in February to investigate whether Elmhurst College notified the College of DuPage after learning of then-WDCB employee John Valenta’s criminal behavior at Elmhurst. Valenta, who worked as the WDCB station engineer from 1979 to 2014, is charged with stealing more than
$100,000 from the station after allegedly filing false invoices for parts and work performed by his company, Broadcast Technologies. Valenta’s employment continued despite John Valenta his being convicted of similar offenses at Elmhurst College, the report stated – even though former WDCB manager Scott Wager may have known about the previous investigation. The 2011 investigation found crews were not present on days Valenta claimed they were performing services and equipment supposedly purchased by Elmhurst College through Broadcast Technologies did not exist at the school radio station. Phone records and an interview with Caroline Krause, assistant director of campus security at Elmhurst College, indicated she spoke to the College of DuPage Police Department over the phone Jan. 31, 2011, and Feb. 1, 2011, to alert the school it was investigating Valenta for fraud, the report stated. However, the College of DuPage officer she spoke to – whose name is redacted in the report – did not log the
call in the department’s Computer Aided Dispatch System – a breach in department policy. On Feb. 1, an officer contacted Krause and said he looked into the matter and was “dismissive of her concerns,” according to the report. The report stated it “appears most likely that Wager assuaged any concerns by telling [redacted officer] that the college’s internal controls would not allow such a fraud to take place at COD.” The report went on to state there was “credible information” indicating that around March 2011, an employee at WDCB – whose name was also redacted – informed Wager she saw a news report of an investigation concerning Valenta. Wager “looked like a ghost” when he saw it, the report stated. The same employee said she then saw Wager and Valenta meet days later behind closed doors, and assumed the matter was addressed. College of DuPage’s response to discoveries made years later indicate no top administrator knew about the fraud before December 2013, according to the report. In 2012, management of WDCB was transferred to the Marketing and Communications Department, headed by
Joe Moore. After “generally acceptable” performance reviews through his career, Wager was not able to meet Moore’s standards and retired effective July 31, 2013, the report stated. Upon taking temporary control of the station, Moore began to question Valenta’s actions, particularly frequent overtime charges. Moore later shared his concerns with new station manager Dan Bindert, hired Oct. 28, 2013. Bindert also noticed several irregularities, including once when he was driving to work and heard the station go off air. He called Valenta immediately, who texted he was “on it” before service was restored. “In retrospect, it is incredible to Bindert that there could have been a failure and that Valenta could have responded to it so quickly,” the report stated. In December 2013, the engineer of another radio station warned Bindert to take a closer look at Valenta, citing past problems. Bindert also was advised the transmitter the college used was known as “bulletproof” and one that “rarely breaks down.”

College of DuPage hires temporary finance team Decision comes after two administrators are put on paid leave By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A split College of DuPage Board of Trustees voted to hold down the financial fort by hiring a consultant firm after the school put a pair of top administrators on paid leave following a buried investment audit coming to light. The board hired Chicago-based Alix Partners with a 4-3 vote June 11. The vote took place two days after Thomas Glaser, senior vice president of administration and treasurer, and Lynn Sapyta, assistant vice president of financial affairs and controller, were placed on leave pending the results of an ongoing investigation. Consultants John Dischner and Kurt Beckeman will take over the treasurer’s office and oversee its day-today operations. Dischner said the firm has experience in high-profile cases and instances of an investigation or perceived loss of credibility. “We’re certainly not looking to reinvent the wheel in any situation,” he said. “Generally, by the time our firm is invited into a situation, there’s some aspect that you don’t want to repeat.” Beckeman said they will emphasize building relationships with college staff to handle daily responsibilities of the office and look at policy changes and performance improvement. Glaser and Sapyta were ousted after an internal audit revealed the school violated board policy by over-investing in specific types of funds, among other violations. An investment of 29.2
percent of the college’s portfolio, or $80 million, in the Illinois Metropolitan Investment Fund led to about $2.2 million of the school’s money being effectively frozen in 2014 after the fund defaulted on certain guaranteed loans. Board policy states investment in such local government investment pools cannot exceed 5 percent. The board was split in approving the contract, with newly elected reform trustees and chairwoman Kathy Hamilton voting in favor and longer-serving trustees Erin Birt, Joesph Wozniak and Dianne McGuire against it. McGuire said the pre-election board approved all investments and should have noticed and corrected the spending earlier. She also said she supported investing in funds with higher promised returns and that the previous board was scheduled to consider easing restrictions in a canceled April meeting. “We have made a rush to judgment on the two that are on administrative leave,” McGuire said. “I am not convinced this is a step we have to take.” Both Birt and Wozniak questioned the cost of the firm, which is charging a $685-per-hour rate for Dischner to oversee the project. The college gave Alix a $15,000 retainer and the firm will work hourly, Dischner said, making an extra effort to be efficient in charging the school. He said the work could require at least two full-time Alix employees. Board vice chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi put the tab on past trustees. “The costs we have to incur for Alix or anyone else who comes in to fill this role while Mr. Glaser and Ms. Sapyta are on administrative leave is a cost, frankly, on the prior board,” she said. “It’s your fault we’re in this scenario today. You don’t blame the cleanup crew that has to come fix your mess.”

SOUND OFF Using toxic chemicals on lawns
I agree with comments regarding toxic chemicals in our community. I’m pregnant and [I] can’t even walk in my subdivision, sit in my yard or open my windows because so many of our neighbors have lawn chemical treatments every month. It’s amazing to me that after all these years and the knowledge we now have about the cancers and other serious problems these products cause that people still use them. It is their choice, but it also affects my family, my pets and myself, which isn’t fair. No chemical is safe; think about what you are doing.
I agree with Bob Costas
I never agree much with sportscaster Bob Costas. When he speaks on nonsports issues, I don’t agree with him much. But I totally agree with him about Bruce Jenner getting this Arthur Ashe courageous award in July on ESPN. Costas said Jenner getting the award was crass, tabloid stuff. Political correctness run amok. I could’t agree with Costas more, and he’s a liberal himself. Well, CBS will be expecting a huge rating on that night. … How sad.

Continued from page 5 However, Valenta frequently said transmitter and power supply issues were the source of problems requiring purchases of parts or equipment. There was also no record of a transmitter purchase by Broadcast Technologies from transmitter company Harris Technologies, according to the report. Within 24 hours of the warning, Bindert brought his findings to Moore. Shortly afterward, senior management was assembled to address and investigate the allegations. Valenta resigned Feb. 7, 2014, and the firm was hired Feb. 15, 2015, to create the report. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said the board “neither endorses nor accepts” the report, and said it would conduct its own investigation on the matter. “The public has paid for this report,” she said in a statement released with the report. “It deserves to read it. ... It describes an unfortunate chapter in COD history that this board will never allow to happen again.”

is going to go out and get the balanced budget and go after these people who are always asking for more, more, more – these public service unions. It used to be that teachers made a small amount of money, and people felt sorry for them. But now they’re trying to hide the fact that the average teacher makes over $100,000 a year. How many of their students’ parents make that kind of money? [Rauner] could do a better job if he just showed those free spending Democrats the door.
Madigan is the real dictator
If you’re going to call anyone a dictator, it should be House Speaker Michael Madigan. He’s mostly responsible for the mess that the state is in. He’s been in power for 30 years. Gov. [Bruce] Rauner has been in office for five months. Put the blame where it belongs.

If bicyclists would stay on their bike paths that they wanted so badly and cars stay on the road – what they’re supposed to be – there shouldn’t be a problem. Cars have a proper place to drive, bikes should have a proper place to drive. Nobody should be getting in each other’s way if they just stayed on the bicycle paths like they’re supposed to.
