WEST CHICAGO – The Payton family of West Chicago recently celebrated what for most is one of life’s simple gifts – the health of their 9-year-old son. Evergreen Elementary School student Owen Payton and his family marked the first anniversary of Owen receiving a heart transplant May 8. His mother, Christina Payton, called the celebration, Owen’s “heartiversary.” “We just wanted to have a relaxing and fun day for Owen to celebrate the fact that he made it through the first year because they say the first year is the hardest,” Christina said. “For us, it was a big deal because a year ago, he was in the hospital, and now, we’re at home with his family and friends. It was a day of appreciation for the small things, for him getting to do the things a 9-year-old should be doing.” Before Owen was born, his family learned he had multiple congenital heart defects and would need a series of three surgeries to correct them. Owen was born prematurely and underwent his first surgery at just 6 days old. His second surgery occurred when he was 8 months old and the third when he was 3. In 2010, almost a year after the third surgery, Owen was diagnosed with protein-losing enteropathy, an extremely rare condition in which the body experiences a severe loss of proteins. Fifty percent of patients do not survive past the first five years after diagnosis. In March 2012, Owen’s parents made the decision to place him on the heart transplant list at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Christina said waiting two years for

the phone to ring with the news of a heart for Owen was the most difficult thing she has ever had to go through, but when that news finally came, she was elated. “When I heard Owen’s doctor say they had a heart for Owen, I went through every emotion you could possibly have – excited, happy, scared, everything,” she said. “I thought about how from this day forward, Owen’s life will change. There’s no going back now.” Owen received his new heart May 8, 2014, and said he was excited to cele-

brate the anniversary. “I was happy that my friends were able to come and most of my family,” he said. “I felt supported.” Owen’s friends from Evergreen Elementary School in Carol Stream came to the party, which was complete with a bounce house and soccer goals set up outside. Christina said the support from the school and the families of Owen’s friends was a tremendous help and that the community raised funds to assist the Paytons before the surgery and chipped in for an Xbox for Owen’s special day last month. Additionally, the Payton family bought a tree for the celebration and planted it in their backyard as a physical reminder of Owen’s heart donor. They plan to reach out to the donor family in the near future. Owen’s health has improved since his transplant. He no longer has protein-losing enteropathy symptoms, his energy levels have increased and his oxygen level is normal. “We just live our life day to day and we never take things for granted,” Christina said. “The small things are the big things.” The Paytons plan to continue to celebrate the success of Owen’s transplant by hosting a heartiversary event every May 8.

GLEN ELLYN – A group of Glen Ellyn veterans were honored this week with a celebration of service in the District of Columbia. Brookdale Senior Living Center in Glen Ellyn saw 15 residents, who are World War II veterans, participate in Honor Flight Chicago. Honor Flight Chicago is a nonprofit organization founded to recognize World War II veterans in the Chicago area by flying them all-expenses paid to the nation’s capital for a day of honor, remembrance and celebration. The organization’s volunteers work year-round to raise money for the flights. The Glen Ellyn veterans’ flight took off at 4 a.m. June 3 at Chicago Midway International Airport. Upon arrival in the District, they had a chance to see the Washington Monument, the National World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the National Air and Space Museum. Brookdale hosted a celebration June 2 recognizing the 15 veterans for their service. This is the first year the center has sent residents to take part in Honor Flight, according to nurse Cheryl Kinczyk. “I think it brings back memories – good, bad or otherwise – they are so proud to serve,” she said. “The fact that they are being recognized for it, they are filled with pride.” The festivities at Brookdale kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance and a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by Bugles Across America bugler Gene Vanden Bosch. American Legion Post 3 of Glen Ellyn and representatives from the Great Lakes naval base also were on hand to raise flags and salute the veterans during the national anthem. Area respite care program serves families across U.S. By PAIGE LISTON pliston@shawmedia.com BLOOMINGDALE – Oftentimes, when a loved one falls ill or is faced with a disability, family members will take on the role of caregiver in order to provide in-home support. The Respite Education and Support Tools program, based out of Bloomingdale, provides those caregivers with the simple – and yet extremely helpful – act of respite care. Respite care is a form assistance provided to a child or adult with special health care needs by giving temporary relief to the caregivers, according to the REST program’s website. Since its inception in 2013 at Marklund Bloomingdale, the REST program has blossomed into a national organization spread across 16 states and Canada. There are 139 REST trainers and 1,129 REST volunteers, according to the website. REST program director Lois Sheaffer of Roselle said working with respite volunteers is such a rewarding job because of the volunteers’ desire to help others. “This is the most passionate and caring group of people I’ve ever met,” Sheaffer said. “There is a caregiving epidemic in our country and it’s nice to

be a small piece of that.” Sheaffer said the program, which celebrated its two-year anniversary this spring, evolved not only from the growing need for caregivers but also the caregivers’ need to receive temporary relief. The REST program provides those caregivers with educated volunteers specialized in service training. “There are long waiting lists for respite and a lack of funding to pay paid workers hourly,” Sheaffer said. “The national landscape would tell us that due to funding cuts for respite that REST is a sustainable measure as we provide a trained workforce of volunteers.” The program features a Train the Trainer course covered in two days. This course is intended to educate prospective REST trainers so that they,

The program introduces trainers to various techniques to use when handling care recipients. Jody Kanikula, a Wheaton native who now lives in Batavia, is the coordinator of the in-home senior respite program for Metropolitan Family Services and uses the REST program training to educate her volunteers. Kanikula has been a REST trainer for a little more than a year and believes respite is a very important practice. “I have had always had a passion for helping elders, and respite is so important to their care because many elders live at home,” Kanikula said. “Family members need an enormous amount of help as far as getting a break, whether that be a nap or grocery shopping or even a trip with the girls to get your nails done. “We need to help these caregivers so that the elderly can die comfortably at home surrounded by the people they love.”

Kanikula took part in the Train the Trainer program and said it gave her the tools she needed to successfully teach volunteers what she had learned. Accordingly, REST volunteers give the gift of their time to provide a valuable service to caregivers. Volunteers are taught by REST trainers in an eight-hour course. Kanikula described the course as very “hands-on,” featuring many engaging activities geared toward adults, including dealing with emergency situations, how to engage with the care recipient by making both the recipient and the caregiver feel comfortable, universal precautions, boundaries and more. Susan Weiner of Wheaton has been a REST volunteer for almost a year. Before her time as a volunteer, she was a caregiver for her father-in-law for 11 years. Knowing first-hand the difficulties associated with caregiving made Weiner want to give back and provide caregivers with that much needed break. “The REST training program really prepared me for the time that I spent with my elder. It made me feel confident to take care of others,” Weiner said. “Being a REST volunteer makes me feel like I’m making a difference in my own way. It’s fulfilling and a learning experience at the same time.”

mittee, a more direct approach is required, he said. To that end, Loiacono said, staff have began creating a work plan regarding various agencies, groups and demographics to connect with to reach the 75 percent of residents without district students. The plan also includes the possibility of a community advisory committee, ideally with a diverse selection of residents. Schuler said the need for a committee became apparent after several residents complained about lack of transparency surrounding a contract to let Verizon Wireless replace a light pole near Wheaton Warrenville South High School’s Grange Field with a taller, 105-foot pole to host cellphone antennas.

“I think what came out of that ... was that we’ve got some groups in the community that we have regular relationships with,” he said. “But I don’t know that we have one group with a cross section of informed, involved folks that we can regularly bring ideas to.” He hopes the committee can be an important bridge between the community and the district for curriculum changes, concerns or unexpected needs and developments. The board supported both the committee and making an effort to partner with other organizations to spread community dialogue. “I think we’ll be able to get the word out and they’re going to love it – everybody wants their opinion heard, especially as we move on and have some

big issues coming up,” board member Joann Coghill said. Board member Jim Gambaiani said the committee will only be effective if the district works to ensure it includes a wide range of residents. “The makeup is the most important thing, and if we’re not reaching the right people that we need to reach, that committee – while it will serve a purpose – I don’t think it will serve the overall purpose,” he said. Schuler said he and staff will work during the summer to create a charter for the committee, defining its goals and relationship with the board. The board can then provide input on groups to reach out to, but Schuler warned against inadvertently filling the committee with district allies or those familiar with the district. “You’ve got to have some critics on there as well because if you get your critics and you put them in the right situation where they have to at least articulate what’s behind the rationale, it does help you understand what people are thinking and how people may interpret a decision that you put out,” he said.

WHEATON – Community engagement has been a significant aspect of public dialogue in Community Unit School District 200 in recent years. During its May 27 meeting, the district’s Board of Education discussed how to better reach out to residents for feedback – particularly those without children in the district. Superintendent Jeff Schuler said the need to do so was one of the district’s biggest takeaways from its 2014 engagement effort, Engage 200. “One of the largest pieces of feedback that we heard from our community loud and clear in Engage 200 was ‘keep the conversation going,’” district Communications Director Erica Loiacono said. Schuler said the goal during the past year has been to implement a few strategies for community conversation while looking at systemic changes to improve the flow of communication between residents, organizations and the district. SOUND OFF Ride fares should pay for public transit maintenance U. S. Rep. Dan Lipinski may have no ill will toward the public, but like all politicians, he’s not telling the whole story. Upkeep of the public transportation system … is the responsibility of the transit companies and is worked into the fare you pay to ride the bus or train. Over the years, more and more maintenance was deferred in favor of bigger and bigger salaries for the administrators of the transit companies. … Don’t be fooled, transit riders, you already paid for maintenance. Don’t let politicians tell you that you need to pay yet a second time for the same maintenance that you have already paid for with your fare to ride.

Mowers and blowers make too much summer ruckus I just wanted to Sound Off about the sounds of lawnmowers and leaf blowers and everything that goes on in the summer to create this loud motor noise that goes on every day. I know it’s summertime. I know lawns have to be mowed and grass clippings have to be blown off, but there’s no way to sit out in your yard anymore on your deck or your patio and just enjoy the breeze and enjoy nature without this motor noise going on constantly at such loud decibels. I’m just wondering if it bothers anybody else or if it’s just me.

I share the concerns expressed by [Glen Ellyn] Village Trustees and residents over the proposed Opus Group redevelopment of the Giesche Shoes property and the adjoining village parking lot, which was given to Opus as an incentive. This massive, multiuse redevelopment of the village gateway includes a five-story commercial and residential building and an adjacent 339-space parking deck. The height would range from 53 to 61 feet, which makes the building actually six stories using the 10-feet-per-story measure employed by many cities. The building will dwarf the adjoining properties and come right up to the sidewalk on Main Street. A six-story building on the hill overlooking historic Main Street should not be allowed to happen.

Golf cart concerns Don’t hide head in the sand regarding heroin epidemic I lost my 21-year-old son to a heroin overdose 2 ½ years ago. Since that time, I put effort into spreading awareness, wherever and whenever I can about this highly addictive and deadly drug that plagues our community and children. We live in Lombard now, but my son was primarily raised in Elmhurst and attended grammar, middle and high school in Elmhurst. I was both saddened and angry to read in the article titled “DuPage officials warn heroin crisis not over” that only eight DuPage county schools are allowing Robert Crown to speak to their students about heroin. I urge the parents and schools out there not to put your head in the sand.

For the people of Downers Grove who live near Randall Park and drive a golf cart on the sidewalks and streets to get around, first of all, you’re not cool. Second, you almost caused an accident. Plan for new Downers park land I am pleased to hear that the Downers Grove Park District has purchased new park land. Now is the time to start thinking about uses for this property. How about a giant Ferris wheel to help showcase Downers Grove that rivals Navy Pier? Can anyone else come up with a better plan? Please, no dog or cat ideas.

What price to jazz up junkyard? The upcoming purchase of the old Pollack Junkyard [in Downers Grove] for $4.5 million sounds like a great deal, but what will be the cost of remediation, and can it be split between the developer and [the village]? Could we then leave the ground inert, plant trees and thus no remediation charge for that which we shall call a park? If it must be remediated, what will that cost be? My concern is that the $4.5 million may have been a “trap” set for the unwary but “involved.” I have great concern for what our future role in this drama will be.

Red Stars Remain Unbeaten with 0-0 Draw in Seattle NWSL leaders earn crucial away point behind strong defensive performance Seattle, Wash. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their first seven matches of the season courtesy of a hard-fought scoreless draw with home side and Shield holders Seattle Reign FC. Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad earned the valuable point behind disciplined team defending and a strong performance by netminder Michele Dalton, whose seven saves saw the 26-year-old earn her second shutout of the 2015 campaign. Seattle controlled possession early on and created the first promising chance in the 13th minute. Reigning league MVP Kim Little sprinted down to the byline on the left side and set up Danielle Foxhoven, whose mishit effort from inside the box found fellow attacker Merritt Mathias. The Alabama native failed to make full contact on the ball, her shot attempt being comfortably stopped by Dalton. Chicago’s Vanessa DiBernardo released a dangerous drive at the other end of the field in the 20th minute, a wicked deflection forcing goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer to leave her feet for a spectacular parry. Red Stars defender Michelle Lomnicki had her side’s best chance of the day on the ensuing DiBernardo corner from the right, as she headed the ball goalward with Kopmeyer out of the net, only to see it dramatically headed off the line by Reign FC’s Elli Reed. The home side had a pair of attempts during the remainder of the opening period, forcing solid saves from Dalton, who did well to avoid giving up rebounds.

After the break, both teams’ promising attacking efforts were well defended, as the fans had to wait until the 65th minute for another close look. Red Stars midfielder Danielle Colaprico swung in a corner kick from the left and Lomnicki got her head on the ball once more, this time seeing her close-range effort bounce just wide of the left post. Seattle nearly punished the visitors for the missed opportunity eleven minutes later, Mathias firing a rocket off the top the crossbar from a central position just outside the box. The home side would follow up with two more promising looks. First substitute Rachel Corsie’s dangerous 82nd-minute cross from the right flank was redirected just wide of the goal by the foot of a Chicago player, then forward Beverly Yanez beat netminder Dalton to the ball on the ensuing corner, just to see her header land on top of the unguarded frame. It was the final noteworthy opportunity of the match, as the Red Stars successfully fended off some furious Reign FC attacking in the final stages to hold on for a crucial point away from home. Junior Gold Championships will have an impact throughout the county as it brings 10,000 hotel room nights, welcomes 3,500 families and creates $18 million in economic impact for DuPage County and the state of Illinois. • Without the funds to continue ongoing sales efforts, more than $24 million of pending business, or 25,000 room nights, could potentially be lost to neighboring states because of lack of attention and incentives to stay in Illinois. • Thousands of visitors spend money at local restaurants, attractions and retail centers each year, resulting in $2.3 billion of economic impact to DuPage County and bringing in tax revenues that save the average family about $1,300 in additional taxes. The proposed state budget threatens to destroy a program that works – and brings in much more money to the state than the funding it receives. We believe this plan is shortsighted, as more than $30 million in hotel tax could be diverted away from attracting more visitors in a questionable effort to solve other problems. Illinois was ahead of its time 30 years ago when it recognized the need to reinvest a portion of visitor spending to continue fueling this economic engine. Yes, Illinois faces some very tough choices regarding next year’s budget, but continuing the current funding for the visitor industry, and the billions that it would mean for Illinois’ bottom line and critical spending, should not be one of them.

When visitors come to Illinois, they fill our hotels, meeting centers, restaurants, shops and attractions. Most importantly, they create economic impact that drives billions of dollars to the bottom line. However, this economic driver is being threatened at precisely the time when Illinois can least afford it. More than $2.5 billion in annual tax revenue is being placed at risk, as state government considers proposals to slash funding to the tourism industry by more than 22 percent. We were honored to have Gov. [Bruce] Rauner speak at an economic outlook summit in DuPage County hosted by Choose DuPage in early May. There we heard that creating a better economy for businesses and citizens of Illinois was a main priority, along with balancing the budget and making significant business reforms. Local business and visitors industry leaders who were there came away believing he recognized investing in tourism was part of the solution to revive the economy. Yet, our industry is now faced with being a victim to severe funding reductions. Since the 1980s, Illinois has been among the nation’s leaders in innovative sales and marketing efforts that have drawn more visitors to the state. We have done this by reinvesting a small portion of hotel tax revenues, money spent by visitors, to bring even more visitors to the area. In 2014, a record 107 million visitors came to Illinois, a new high for the fourth consecutive year. Those people didn’t show up by accident. They were drawn here in many ways: incentives to conventions and trade shows, advertising and marketing in the U.S. and across the globe, partnerships with local organizations and more. Here are just a few examples of how tourism impacts DuPage County: • The DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau has secured the country’s largest amateur bowling event for July 2015. Panthers pounce to earn shot at sectional title By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Whether it is on the football field, wrestling mat or baseball field, Luke Greenberg has been in plenty of big situations before. So it should come as no surprise that the Glenbard North senior came through with his best pitching performance of the season at the perfect time – with a little help from his friend. Allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out eight in a complete-game effort, Greenberg tossed a shutout June 3 in the Panthers’ 1-0 victory against St. Charles North in a semifinal game at the St. Charles East Class 4A sectional. “I was feeling good and I knew my defense had it behind me,” Greenberg said. “I feel good under pressure, I live for those moments and I knew we had it in us. All game, I knew what I had to do and I was able to do it. They are a very good team and I had to throw my best pitches at them, and I did that.” The win, which avenged a 2-1 loss in nine innings against the North Stars in the regional final last year, sends the team into the sectional championship at 11 a.m. June 6. Second baseman Nick Barrett made sure the shutout stayed intact with an outstanding defensive play in the bottom of the fifth inning in a scoreless contest, making a diving catch up the middle with runners on first and third. Barrett then delivered the key at-bat of the game in the top of the seventh, walking with the bases loaded and two outs to plate the eventual winning run. Mark Cerabona came in to score after a one-out single started the rally. “I saw a hard shot and knew I needed to get my mitt on it to save the run,” Barrett said about his web gem. “And then with the bases loaded, I was just looking to get something to hit and get some RBIs on the board. But their pitcher was having a little trouble finding the strike zone and he didn’t give it to me. I just want to help the team out any way I can.” Glenbard North coach Rich Smelko wasn’t surprised Greenberg and Barrett both came through. “Luke was fantastic on the mound,” he said. “He is a three-year starter for us, and every time there is a big sit-

Glenbard North players celebrate the Panthers’ 1-0 win against St. Charles North on June 3 in a sectional semifinal at St. Charles East. The Panthers will play in the sectional championship game June 6. uation and he has an opportunity to come up with a big hit or a big pitch, he comes through. He threw one of his best games. “And Nick is the guy we want up at the plate when the game is on the line.” The Panthers will be making their first appearance in a sectional title game in more than a decade and will send ace Eric Orze to the mound. The senior is 11-0 on the spring. “It’s not easy to win playoff games period,” Smelko said. “To be in a sectional final, we are happy about it, we are ecstatic. And with Eric throwing, that gives the team a ton of confidence going in.” To get to the sectional, North captured the Geneva regional championship with a 3-1 victory against the host Vikings on June 1. Barrett hit a three-run homer in the

opening inning and Eric Orze made that stand up. The senior right-hander allowed four hits while striking out seven in a complete game. “He was fantastic,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said of Orze. “He threw all his pitches for strikes. When you get down 3-0 early against a pitcher like that, it kind of takes you out of it. We struggled to get guys on base early in the game. “We saw him pitch Wednesday against Rolling Meadows. We knew we were going to have our hands full.” Zach Heck had two hits and Orze and Nolan Jasinski each had a hit and run scored.

against Geneva on May 28. Fred Gosbeth did all he could to keep West Chicago close, allowing just six hits while striking out eight in a complete-game effort. John Strum, Justin Yackey, Brian Sullivan and Matt Dall all had hits for the Wildcats, who played without three-year starting shortstop Connor Dall because of injury. The squad started the postseason with a 10-4 victory against Proviso West on May 27. Jared Smothers and Peyton Seidler each had two hits and two runs scored, and Jake DeLuca knocked in a pair of runs. Alex Cabral was the winning pitcher, striking out five while allowing two earned runs.

West Chicago The Wildcats were knocked out of Russell Hodges contributed to this the Class 4A playoffs with a 4-1 loss story.
