COLLEGE OF DUPAGE

By NATHAN LURZ

Ellen Roberts, director of business affairs, said school food service provider Sodexo is not interested in taking the space because of its poor location for foot traffic and the provider’s disinterest in a high end restaurant, building investments and the negative publicity surrounding Waterleaf’s finances. She said the space turns down about five events each month because of lack of availability and could be used for more conferences. She also said population and employment in DuPage County are trending upward – a good financial sign for restaurants – and that the college could generate revenue by renting Waterleaf’s space to another restaurant for use. Stewart said culinary and hospitality faculty were “erupting” with possibilities for curricula using Waterleaf’s facilities. Given the opportunity, faculty and outside advisers would look at implementing a variety of new classes as early as spring 2016 to take advantage of the real-world feel of the space. She said Waterleaf is a valuable representation of a professional kitchen and restaurant, and its fare could be better tailored to fit curriculum options and make it more accessible for

the community. Should the opportunity present itself, Stewart said, she is open to having more catering and full restaurant nights. “It has to be driven by the curriculum,” she said. Tim Meyer, one of the school’s culinary program coordinators, said students love the experience of working in the kitchen and faculty likely could handle day-to-day operations at Waterleaf, possibly eliminating several positions. “It gives great opportunities – when students are in the kitchen, it’s a very tight space, they have to stay organized,” he said. “It forces them to do things that they normally have to do in the industry.” Multiple residents expressed support for increased student involvement at Waterleaf during public comment, and the board seemed in favor of additional curricula. “This sounds like a really wonderful option for the Waterleaf,” trustee Dianne McGuire said. “We are really excited about it.” The board will take a formal vote in the future on the next steps for the restaurant.

Higher Learning Commission to reschedule accreditation review By EVAN SHIELDS

eshields@shawmedia.com A review of the College of DuPage’s accreditation has been delayed after the Higher Learning Commission postponed a trip to the school scheduled for June 29 and 30. The postponement was announced June 28 and was attributed to Jackson College President Daniel Phelan’s cancellation of his involvement with the College of DuPage accreditation review, according to a school news release. The college’s acting interim president, Joseph Collins, said in the release the visit is expected to be rescheduled

about a month from the original review dates. “While we are disappointed that there will be a delay, we understand the HLC’s desire to ensure that the team members are suited to give us an honest evaluation,” he said. The Board of Trustees was scheduled to meet June 29 to have a discussion related to the commission’s review process, but that meeting was canceled. In a blog post June 27, Edgar County Watchdogs stated Phelan was a “clone” of College of DuPage President Robert Breuder, who was placed on administrative leave in April. In the post, the watchdog group

stated Phelan has received a vote of no confidence from Jackson’s faculty association and has been criticized for lavishly spending money on wine and food. Similar complaints have been lodged against Breuder. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, a vocal opponent of Breuder, said in the release that Phelan’s decision to opt out of the review process will set the standard for who will review the school’s accreditation. “Based on this occurrence, we will insist on closely examining the backgrounds of all potential HLC reviewers to ensure a proper assessment of the college that protects all of the educational

work done by our faculty and students, on behalf of our taxpayers,” she said. Higher Learning Commission Public Information Officer John Hausaman did not immediately return multiple calls seeking comment on the review’s postponement. The college received a letter May 5 from the commission on its accreditation being placed under review. The commission cited investigations related to institutional finance and ethics violations as being among the reasons for the review. The commission is expected to evaluate the school’s educational responsibilities, ethical practices, degree programs and more.

The on-campus Waterleaf Restaurant at College of DuPage may undergo some drastic changes in the near future. The 6,000-square-foot upscale establishment in the school’s Culinary & Hospitality Center has come under fire in recent months for costing the college more than $530,000 in operations each year since it opened in October 2011 and being the site of controversial meals for trustees. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said the restaurant represents a “financial drain” for the school. “We’re really interested in redirecting where the Waterleaf is going, and so a thought-out analysis … is very important,” she said. Trustee Charles Bernstein led a committee to examine the future of the restaurant, delivering its findings at the board’s June 25 meeting before staff offered options for Waterleaf’s future. Currently, students staff the front and back of the restaurant Monday and Tuesday nights, while Waterleaf operates as a professional restaurant the

rest of the week. Bernstein said the school’s expansion to a full restaurant came at the behest of President Robert Breuder, who now is on administrative leave. “From everything I’ve been able to determine, Waterleaf existed, was created, exists today, because of one man,” he said. “It was the dream and the ambition of one man, one man who wanted a Michelin star. It had and has no educational role.” Staff presented three options for change at Waterleaf: convert the dining area to three small classrooms, open the restaurant to lessees and events, and repurpose the space as an academic lab. A staff report stated repurposing the dining area and bar as classrooms – including removal of finishes and partitions, as well as ductwork and electric work – would run $378,400 to $516,000. Adding two classrooms in the kitchen area would bring the total to about $1 million to $1.3 million. However, Dean for Business and Technology Donna Stewart said the additional classroom space would not add much value to the college’s curriculum.

CAROL STREAM – Celebrating the Fourth of July calls for parades, fireworks, food and fun. To Carol Stream residents, it also means coming together as a community to celebrate their beloved city and country. This July 4, Carol Stream will celebrate the day with a parade, concert and fireworks show. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at County Farm and Lies roads and will proceed to the Ross Ferraro Town Center at Gary Avenue and Lies Road, according to Rick Gieser, treasurer for the Carol Stream parade committee. “I think the parade is a major opportunity for all of Carol Stream to come together to celebrate the community and the country that we love,” Gieser said.

The parade is about 1½ miles long and will feature various entries, including dancers and athletes from the Carol Stream Park District, Glenbard North marching band, Jesse White tumblers and a float from the Carol Stream Historical Society, among others. There will be a float competition showcasing the best representation of this year’s parade theme, “We love Carol Stream.” The festivities continue at 7 p.m. at the Ross Ferraro Town Center with a performance by the Illinois Brass Band. The band will play standard jazz music and a patriotic medley, according to Christopher Oakley, the assistant to the village manager. Additionally, there will be three food trucks at the Town Center celebration: Husky Hog BBQ, Chicago’s Own Mobile Pizza Oven Co. and Chi-

cago Cupcake. Beginning at 9:20 p.m., there will be a fireworks show choreographed to patriotic music featuring high in the sky displays. The public can view the show at Veterans Park, Mitchell Lakes and the Town Centergrounds. Oakley said this celebration is a Carol Stream tradition. “Some of the people who grew up in this town remember these days and can now pass it on to their kids. We take a lot of pride in this,” Oakley said. “The special events committee executes events well, and this gives people the chance to make good memories and want to come back next year.” Because of limited parking at the Town Center, the village will provide a free shuttle service to and from parking lots along the Lies Road Industrial Corridor from 7 to 10:30 p.m.

District 93’s Summer Band wows crowd at Boomers Game SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BLOOMINGDALE – Nearly 140 of Community Consolidated School District 93’s Summer Band students wowed the crowd at the June 16 Schaumburg Boomers game with their rendition of the national anthem. Every summer, D-93 holds summer band for all fifth- through eighth-grade students in its band program as well as some students in Queen Bee District 16’s band program. Over the course of two four-day weeks, June 15-18 and June 22-25, students spent two to 2 1/2 hours rehearsing as a large group and breaking off to rehearse with like instrument sections such as woodwinds, brass or percussion. Some even practiced their craft with the jazz band. “Summer Band provides our students with an opportunity to continue their instrumental learning process,” Band Director Sherri Steinke said. “They not only get to see their friends, the band students improve their playing skills in a very short time span. The progress is amazing and fast!” Steinke, along with fellow Band

Directors Amy Dandeles and Alice Brown, push the students to improve by taking on challenging pieces while teaching them to have fun. The balance of enjoyment and drive instilled in students in the band contributes to the program’s success and is a big reason why D-93 was named a 2014 Best Community for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants. “The music is definitely a lot more challenging in Summer Band,” graduated eighth-grader Gianna Sabatino said. “You get a lot more broad experience with music.” Sam Falco, who is entering eighth grade at D-93’s Jay Stream Middle School, found playing at the Boomers game to be the highlight of Summer Band this year and enjoyed the new perspective he gained from the experience. “I thought it was pretty cool because you always see the people playing music on TV who are there and you never Photo provided know what actually goes into playing at a sports event,’’ he said. “And so now District 93 Summer Band members Devanshi Patel, Athira Nair, Lucy Nyugen, Carol Ngo, that you know how everything goes, Alison Rimkus, Anna Carrera, Miranda Robinson and Melissa Garcia were among the stuyou can relate to it.” dents who played for the crowd during a June 16 Schaumburg Boomers game.

He said it was surreal to see his son bring the Cup back to Lemont. “It’s something you can never dream of,” he said. “The best part is to see all the Blackhawks fans.” Darling also brought his girlfriend, Martha Buckley,

cheering for Darling required a change of allegiance. “Any jersey that Scott wears, I’m the biggest fan of,” Buckley said. “It was a pretty easy decision this time. Getting off the plane in Boston with a Blackhawks hat on, I’d do it again.” Buckley also said she likes to tease Darling that she has more skills on the ice, because she once was a competitive figure skater. LEMONT – Residents of Lemont welcomed back Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup champion and native son Scott Darling for a celebration June 29. It was Darling’s day with the Stanley Cup, and he chose to spend part of the day posing for pictures and signing autographs at the Lemont Park District CORE Fitness and Aquatic Center. “It’s the place I’ve called home my whole life,” Darling said. “It’s incredible. It means so much to me. I’m just proud I was able to bring this back to you guys.” The event started about 12:45 p.m. with Darling and the Cup parading to the CORE atop a fire truck, followed by a rally with an audience of local VIPs before the event opened for the public at 2 p.m. Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves proclaimed the day “Scott Darling Day” and presented several gifts to the Hawks goalie. “I can tell you this has got

waiting in the rain for a chance to see Darling and the Cup, but the first were the Cece and Kunickis families of Lemont. Al Kunickis said they arrived at 6 a.m., and the next people in line arrived a half-hour later. “I thought there were going to be a ton of people,” he said. Nikki Cece said they wanted to get in line early because “it’s a special moment for our kids.” The kids could not decide whether they were more excited to see the Cup or Scott Darling. Though it has been years since Darling lived in town, there still were many people who remember Darling and his family. “I grew up with his sister, so it’s really awesome to be able to support Scott,” Lemont resident Patti Handley said. Gregg Eichwedel said he lived down the street from the Darlings. “It was worth it [waiting for hours] to see him and get that close to the Cup,” he said. “Scott was very personable to all my kids and family.”

D-93 improves efforts for children from birth to three COMMUNITY VOICE Bill Shields While District 93 has long offered a high-quality preschool program for 3- and 4-year-old children, research has shown that providing support to children from birth to age three also is crucial for improving their opportunities for success later in life. For this reason, beginning in the 2014-15 school year, D-93 has committed to new ways of supporting the development of children from birth through age five throughout the community. Through screenings, resources and networking opportunities, D-93 is working to ensure that these young children are reaching their important developmental milestones and providing support for children who need them at a young age. This past school year, D-93 named staff member Michelle Scharinger its Birth to Three Coordinator. A process was established to reach out to families with children at the birth to age three levels for screenings in addition to the district’s long-standing practice of contacting families of children 33 months through five years of age. The early screenings enable our licensed professionals to identify whether children are meeting their developmental milestones. Developmental milestones not reached could be a sign of a developmental delay. As a result of the developmental screenings, D-93 staff can collaborate with families to provide targeted interventions, support, and/or resources to address identified areas of need. Through early identification, improvement of an identified problem can occur at an early age. Currently, there are about 28 families that have been identified and have entered the process for tracking their child’s growth and development. Various literature and advertisements have been designed to communicate this birth to age three service to our families. In addition, the 2014-15 school year marked the inception of the Carol Stream Area Birth to Five Coalition. Since November 2014, more than 13 community organizations that serve students and families of birth to

There are powerful interests at College of DuPage who lost much and have much more to lose. Solution: Destroy the messenger, Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton. The board policies on campaigning do not have the force of law and are unenforceable. Board policy does not trump First Amendment protections. COD trustees are not paid, hence, the charge of campaigning using compensated time should be seen for what it is, a blatant attempt at political payback. Keep fighting for us, Kathy.

Red Stars Earn Convincing 3-0 Win Away over Sky Blue FC

Several players with standout performances as Chicago remains atop NWSL table Piscataway, N.J. – The Chicago Red Stars defended their spot at the top of the NWSL table with a commanding 3-0 away win over Sky Blue FC on Sunday night. Vanessa DiBernardo, Jen Hoy and Alyssa Mautz all scored for Chicago, with Hoy adding an assist on Mautz’ second-half tally. The match also featured a pair of assists by 22-year-old Huerta and outstanding play by defender Abby Erceg, who made her return to the Red Stars lineup after captaining New Zealand in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Chicago goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned her third clean sheet of the season behind an all-around solid performance. The Red Stars seized the lead in just the sixth minute of play. Huerta sprinted into the box on the left and battled to maintain possession before smartly centering to DiBernardo, who coolly sidestepped goalkeeper Brittany Cameron for the opening strike. Sky Blue FC had an opportunity to level the score a mere four minutes later, but Shawna Gordon’s left-footed shot from the top of the area went just over the frame. After three brilliant defensive plays in a row by Chicago’s Erceg, the 25-year-old center back was in the right spot again to block a 21st-minute cross from the right by Sky Blue FC’s Meg Morris. However, the interception fell right to Katie Freels, who nearly put away the opportunity with a left-footed attempt that rattled the crossbar. The home side had another chance to tie the match at the half-hour mark, as Taylor Lytle was in on goal off a beautiful through ball from deep inside her own half, only to have Red Stars outside back Arin Gilliland catch up and force her wide. While the rookie’s hustle allowed Erceg and Samantha Johnson to recover, Lytle still managed to get a shot off, firing across goal and just wide of the far post from the left side of the area. In the 34th minute, Chicago made their opponents pay dearly for the missed opportunities with a beautiful combination play doubling the lead for Head Coach Rory Dames’ side. Rachel Quon took full advantage of a breakaway by releasing Huerta down the center, and the rookie sensation unselfishly slid the ball through to Hoy for a simple tap-in from the mouth of the goal.

Sky Blue FC started off the second half on the right foot, as Freels put Danish international Nadia Nadim through on goal, but Red Stars keeper Michele Dalton left her feet for an exceptional block on the powerful driven effort. That set the stage for Chicago to increase their lead just after the hour mark. Danielle Colaprico’s long ball into the attack found Hoy entering the box with time on her hands, picking out Mautz for a right-footed shot that took a slight deflection and trickled inside the left upright. In the 66th minute of the competition, Huerta nearly added a fourth for her squad when she exploited some indecisive defending by toe-poking the ball away from Maya Hayes and took unleashed a shot on frame to force a diving stop by Cameron. Idaho native Huerta continued to wreak havoc in the closing stages of the match, dribbling past two defenders on the left side of the box and firing from close range, only for Cameron to produce a point-blank reaction save. The rebound fell into the path of Rachel Quon, whose low attempt on goal forced another diving save from the Sky Blue FC goalkeeper. Lytle had a chance to pull one back for the hosts, her strong shot from the top of the penalty area whistling just over the bar. Shorty after that, her teammate Nadia Nadim nearly scored what would have been a certain candidate for Goal of the Year. On a stoppage-time corner kick from the right, the striker tracked back to meet the ball near the edge of the box and smashed it off the crossbar by way of a spectacular bicycle kick. It would be the final opportunity of the night, as Chicago held on for its fifth victory of 2015. The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to make it consecutive wins when they travel to take on Houston Dash on July 12. The team’s next home game is a July 18 meeting with Boston Breakers at Benedictine University in Lisle. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by calling 773-698-6001 or by visiting www.chicagoredstars. com/tickets.

Baseball postseason a highlight for Glenbard North Panthers send three individuals to state gymnastics meet

By SCOTT SCHMID

sschmid@shawmedia.com

Courtesy of his fourthplace finish on the rings at the Glenbard West sectional, Joshua Garrison punched his ticket to the IHSA state gymnastics meet. Once there, the junior posted a score of 8.00 to finish 27th in the event. Asim Zaidi grabbed an at-large berth on the pommel horse and came in 13th with a score of 8.3. Luke Meister was an at-large state qualifier who was 41st on pommel horse.

CAROL STREAM – In a busy high school spring sports season, athletes from Glenbard North and West Chicago stood out with some strong performances. Here are some spring sports highlights from each school, presented in no particular order:

Glenbard North

Panthers team advances to baseball supersectional

One of the best seasons in Glenbard North program history culminated with a DuPage Valley Conference championship and a postseason run that ended one game before the state semifinals. The Panthers led the league from start to finish and then rattled off four straight playoff wins, outscoring the opposition 17-1, to capture regional and sectional titles. The squad fell by a 7-5 margin in the Schaumburg supersectional and had a final record of 26-11. Quotable: “We had an unbelievable season. I couldn’t be happier to coach this group of guys. They are a special group who won the most games in Glenbard North baseball history. Winning the DVC, winning the regional, winning the sectional and getting to the elite eight and giving us a chance to make it to the finals, I couldn’t ask for anything more than that,” coach Rich Smelko said.

Wahrman notches all-state status in track with third-place finish

A three-event state track meet qualifier, Allison Wahrman went on to collect an all-state medal in the triple jump. The junior had a mark of 38 feet, 8.5 inches to finish in third place in Class 3A. She also was 18th in the high jump and competed in the long jump. Joining Wahrman at the state meet was Keina

Competing in the prelims, the senior cleared a height of 14 feet but fell just short of advancing to the finals. As a junior, Kubik posted a mark of 13-6.

Almonte a state qualifier in badminton for Wildcats squad

Competing at the Buffalo Grove sectional, Evelyn Almonte punched her ticket to the IHSA state badminton tournament by finishing fourth in the singles bracket. As a team, West Chicago placed third. Almonte won a pair of sectional matches to advance, including one in three games.

Lemont native relishes experience with Stanley Cup By SCOTT SCHMID

sschmid@shawmedia.com

What’s the last year been like? Darling: The whole year, from start to finish, like I’ve said before, it was such an honor to sign with the team and I was thrilled to be on the [Rockford] Ice Hogs. Then to get the opportunity with Chicago and to have a role

CSP

LEMONT – The past year has been a whirlwind for Scott Darling after the Lemont native signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 1, 2014. Having made a variety of stops on the minor league circuit, the 26-year old got his first call-up to the NHL on Oct. 26 and was the winning goalie in a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators. Darling went on to play in 14 regular season games before seeing action in five postseason contests in the opening round against Nashville, where he notched three wins. His performance helped the Blackhawks advance to the second round and ultimately capture their third Stanley Cup in the past six seasons. In the process, the 6-foot-6 goalie became the first Chicago-area born player to have his name etched on the Cup as a member of the Blackhawks. On June 29, Darling brought the cup to his former hometown and put it on display at the Lemont Park District. Staff writer Scott Schmid was part of a press conference at which Darling spoke about the experience in Lemont and what it has been like to be a part of a Stanley Cup champion. What has the last couple of weeks been like and has it sunk in that you are a Stanley Cup Champion? Darling: It’s been crazy since we’ve won. We’ve done a lot of great stuff, like going to Wrigley Field and going to see Mumford & Sons. And now this is my day to share the Cup with my hometown and with my family and friends. Once it all winds down a little bit, I can relax and just reflect, maybe turn my phone off for a few days and enjoy it for a little bit.

Thousands of fans lined up to see the Lemont native and the trophy in person. in the playoffs and winning the Cup, it’s been unbelievable. To get to bring the Cup back to Lemont, how special is that? Darling: This is where I spent a lot of my life, these are the streets where I use to ride my bike. To see how excited the people are, it means a lot. I never forgot where I came from. I call this home, I always have my whole life. I played Little League here, I played for the Lemont Indians. I was [just like] those kids out there, and to see them all here, it’s exciting. How did your new tattoo of the Stanley Cup come about? Darling: I’m a fan of tattoos. I always wanted an excuse to get a Stanley Cup tattoo and now I have a great one. What is your mindset heading into next season? Darling: I’m hungry as ever. I want to stay here, I want to be here for a long time. I’ll take a couple of weeks off and then a couple of weeks later, the season will start. I’m excited to get to camp and I still have to earn my spot for next year.
