Letter from the President On behalf of the faculty, staff and students, I want to welcome you to Northern Illinois University for the fall semester. As you come to campus for the first time—or perhaps you are a returning student—you are most likely experiencing a wide range of emotions such as excitement, anxiety and maybe just a little bit of confusion. Relax, take a deep breath, and try to enjoy every moment, because this is the start of an amazing journey that will end a few years from now when you cross the stage at the NIU Convocation Center on graduation day. While being a part of the Northern Illinois University community has its privileges, it also comes with responsibilities. NIU strives to create a community based on these standards: CARING: To support the well-being of others and to encourage service to others HONESTY: To be truthful and forthcoming about one’s self in both academic and non-academic endeavors RESPECT: To respect each member of the University Community RESPONSIBILITY: To accept ownership for one’s actions, attitudes, and behaviors As a member of the Huskie Family, I encourage you to get involved in one of the many opportunities available to you—become a research rookie, join a student organization, or volunteer in the community. These experiences will help you meet new friends while you learn to apply your classroom learning and give back. Know that NIU’s caring and knowledgeable staff will be there to assist you in managing any uncertainty you might feel about your first days in college. In this publication, you will find a comprehensive listing of area amenities and resources to assist you in finding your way in the DeKalb community. Today we welcome you as students—learn today in order to lead tomorrow. And at graduation, you will no doubt marvel at how far you have come and how your NIU journey has changed your life. Get ready for a great adventure!

Things to do
in DeKalb By Renee Messacar
The most useful lessons Northern Illinois University grad Trent Metzger learned during college didn’t come from textbooks. They came from meeting people of varying backgrounds and trying new things. “I learned the importance of coexisting and working well with people that I may not necessarily be great friends with or have anything in common with,” he said. He only was able to learn these lessons when he branched out from his hometown of Rochelle. Staying on campus during the weekends “can help you build relationships with classmates and get to know people on a more social basis outside of the classroom,” he said. “It will also cause you to expose yourself to new people and experiences which is a very important aspect of college.” “The community has an abundance of outdoor activities,” he said, “such as grilling in a park, biking, disc golf, fishing and hiking.” “Shabbona Lake State Park is only 20 minutes from here,” said Debbie Armstrong, executive director of the DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Park visitors can hike, fish, take out paddle boats and cross-country ski,” she said. “Students might not think much is going on in DeKalb County, but there are so many things to do here,” she said. “It is just a matter of getting plugged in to what is going on.” The convention and visitors bureau website lists fairs, festivals, community theater productions, farmers markets, poetry readings, dance lessons, concerts, and other activities. It also has a link to NIU activities and events. “The county has a number of movie theaters, bowling allies and pool halls as well, “ Armstrong said.

“Local park districts are also resources for finding things to do,” said DeKalb Park District Executive Director Cindy Capek. She often sees students taking advantage of the district’s golf courses and Hopkins Park Pool, which will be open until Sept. 3. “We see a jump in numbers at the golf courses when students return,” she said. Students also seem to enjoy the disc golf holes at Prairie and Welsh parks and skating at the Katz Park Skateboard Park. “Getting outside is important,” Capek said. “There is nothing better than going to a local park, enjoying nature and taking in the fresh air. It is better than sitting in your room reading.” The park district has a variety of facilities—from swing sets to gyms to the Kiwanis Parkway and DeKalb-Sycamore bike paths. People walk, run, bike and skate on these trails that wind throughout the city and connect to the Great Western Trail, which spans to St. Charles. The park districts also welcome students to participate in their various programs, such as Zumba Parties, tennis lessons and softball. Leila Shiekhy has an idea for a different sort of outdoor activity—skydiving. “Everybody should try it at least once,” said the Chicagoland Skydiving Center customer service representative. The center, which is in nearby Rochelle, offers students a 14,000foot tandem jump for $209.99 on the weekends and a Wednesday jump special for $150, plus $1 for every pound the jumper weighs after 150 pounds. It is open seven days a week and includes a restaurant, bar, store, full-service RV park and free tent camping. “All of the center’s instructors have been certified and have completed thousands of jumps,” Shiekhy said. Metzger might not have skydived during his time at Northern, but he did enjoy his time. “It is what you make of it,” he said.

DESTINATION:
Downtown DeKalb
DeKalb is a great college town with lots to offer the students. Besides all the events on campus the city has much to offer. A short walk from campus is one of their gems: downtown DeKalb. This area of the city offers everything from historic landmarks to a variety of shopping, restaurants and nightlife. One of the most historic landmarks in downtown is the Egyptian Theatre, a 1929 movie palace. It is one of the best examples of Egyptian/Art Deco architecture in the country and was named one of the 150 places you must see in Illinois and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historical Places. The theatre shows classic and family movies along with film festivals, hosts concerts, live theatre and dance shows and transforms itself into a haunted house at Halloween. The Egyptian is home to over 25 community groups who use the theatre every year. For more information or events schedule visit egyptiantheatre.org. Across the street from the Egyptian you will see the Frank Van Buer Plaza, named after the former mayor of DeKalb, Frank Van Buer, who was responsible for starting the revitalization of the downtown that was completed this past year. The brick paved parking lot with its artistic seating wall and benches is the setting for the DeKalb Farmers Market that is every Thursday from noon-6pm through the end of September. They offer fresh vegetables, wines, pies and a “Live Music Series from noon-1:30pm where you can come down and enjoy live music while having lunch. At the corner of 1st Street and Lincoln Highway in Memorial Park you can admire the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Clock. This World War I memorial was dedicated in honor of all the veterans from DeKalb. The park also is home to an historic World War I tank, known as “Donna.” Have a seat on one of the benches and gaze at the mural that was a collaboration of many artists and community residents who came together to tell the
2012 Back to School Edition | Welcome Back | 29 story of DeKalb’s history and its founding fathers. There are two other murals located in the downtown area. Behind the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce located at the corner of Second Street and Lincoln Highway, see the mural of the DeKalb Park District’s bandshell. Walk back to Lincoln Hwy. and cross the street and gaze at the wall above Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant to view the other mural depicting famous Illinois and DeKalb residents. Downtown DeKalb offers a great variety of restaurants to choose from. The Lincoln Inn Family Restaurant and Bakery has one of the best breakfasts in the area. If bagels are your breakfast of choice, stop in to Chesapeake Bagel Bakery. For lunch, stop into O’Leary’s Restaurant and Pub for an ale and a variety of Irish dishes. If you enjoy Thai food, there is the Thai Pavillion and Golden Thai Jasmine. Other restaurants include Mediteranneo, a Mediterranean restaurant, Tapa La Luna, a tapas restaurant, The Hillside for upscale comfort food, Eduardo’s and Rosita’s for Mexican cuisine, World Famous Pizza, Lothson’s Chicken, and Hometown Sports Bar and Grill for a burger or The House Cafe for sandwiches. If you are looking for a great dessert, stop by The Confectionary for a chocolate treat. You can watch them make them right in the window! Downtown DeKalb is also home to Stage Coach Players, located at 126 S. 5th Street. Stage Coach Players began in DeKalb County in the summer of 1947, shortly after World War II had ended and America was ready to entertain and be entertained. The first season of plays were performed in a large barn on the John Ellwood Ilehamwood Farm. Permission was received to use the farm’s antique stage coach as a ticket office, hence the name Stage Coach Players was coined, and the troupe became the area’s only live theatre company. In the summer of 2001 Stage Coach Players moved to their current location and are one of the oldest continuously operating community theatre groups in DeKalb County. The Stage Coachers produce and perform 6 shows a year. To learn more, purchase tickets or get involved visit their website at www.stagecoachers.com. If you are looking for nightlife, Otto’s nightclub and The House Cafe have live bands performing regularly in their venues. To see their schedules visit ottosdekalb.com and thehousecafe.net.
